What is your preferred medium?

Oil on canvas or linens panels. I make most of my own paint with safe natural pigment and walnut oil, and I use lavender essential oil as a solvent.

When did you start making art?

Title of piece: Quince and Tea

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t create art. I have been oil painting for about seven years.

What inspired this piece?

What advice do you have for other artists?

We have a beautiful flowering quince on our property. The colors spoke to me, so I snipped off a small branch of it and a bit of lilac and did my best to transfer to canvas a small glimpse of the beauty and blessings of everyday life.

I believe we are all artists. I think it is just a matter of finding the right outlet to express our creativity. So my advice would be to explore and try new things and don’t compare yourself to others.

No season evokes a sense of comfort quite like fall. The lower temperatures, pumpkin and apple everything, holiday season drawing closer – there’s something so cozy about all of it.

And this autumn, fashion is no exception. We have a preview of all the trends so you can start getting your wardrobe ready for leaf crunching and spiced latte sipping.

Starting with prints and patterns, there is so much to choose from. We can’t talk about fall without first mentioning plaid. Think beyond the standard button up and opt for a coat or pants instead! Animal prints rarely go out of style but expect to see refined options in more muted tones. If neither of those match your vibe, polka dots are also anticipated to be widely popular. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns this fall; layering is a great way to play with prints and stay warm.

When it comes to color, vibrant shades are going to be massively popular. This is somewhat of a departure from the typical fall trend of darker shades being the preference. Add a pop of color to your wardrobe with vivid, saturated colors like tangerine and fuchsia.

A statement shoe is an easy entry point for this.

For denim this autumn, it’s no longer just about the wide leg as it was in previous fashion seasons, although the bootcut is projected to be a favorite. Expect to see a wide variety of widths when it comes to jeans.

Keeping it cozy is paramount with casual, soft fabrics taking the spotlight. It’s no surprise that sweaters are a highlight for this season, but don’t be surprised if you see a bit of maximalism with trim of all kinds embellishing knits. Wanting a little more edge to your textiles? Leather and vinyl are another mainstay for fall. If you want to hop on this trend, consider a boxy moto jacket or a pair of square toe boots.

Our final comfortable, luxurious fall trend is faux fur outerwear. Much of the fashion industry has banned the use of real fur, so it’s refreshing to still see fuzzy details in an ethical

application. Faux fur coats and jackets trimmed with fur evoke a vintage feel that pairs well with a lot of the other trends anticipated for this fall.

While it can be easy to dress mostly for practicality as the crisp air of autumn approaches, remember to enjoy every moment this season brings. Show your character in bold hues, daring patterns, and variety in textures. These trends lend themselves well to comfort and confidence, so choose pieces you love to make the most of this fun season of fashion. a

Mother of the bride gowns are typically formal, and they often complement the overall style, theme, and colors of the wedding. While it’s usually safe to wear a neutral color like champagne, blush, or black at any season, autumn weddings this year are sure to be featuring deep, rich jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire, and burgundy. A New Choice Available For CT Scans

Computed Tomography, better known as CT scans, is a type of medical imaging routinely used by doctors for diagnostic purposes. Utilizing x-rays images from various angles and a specialized computer, CT machines take digital pictures of your bones, organs, and other soft tissues. Generating a 3-D image, CT scans provide an in-depth view of the body.

CTs are often used by doctors to identify and diagnosis conditions, such as bone fractures or breaks, tumors in soft tissue or the bone, and internal injuries or bleeding. They are also helpful with diagnosing and monitoring cancer, masses, nodules and the effectiveness of certain treatments. Additionally, CT imaging can be used to help guide certain medical procedures, such as robotic biopsy or surgery.

Doctors can order CT scans to be performed with or without contrast.

The contrast dye is given per IV (intravenous injection) and commonly gives patients a metallic taste in their mouth. Occasionally patients who are having their abdominal area scanned will need to drink an oral contrast solution. The scan typically takes about 30-60 minutes to perform and takes place in a round, open machine and the process is non-invasive While an extremely helpful tool, CT scans are not without harm, they do expose patients to various levels of radiation. The type of radiation used by the CT machine is called ionizing radiation. This category of radiation is natural and found around us every day, even from the sun’s rays. Natural radiation is called background radiation and is part of how diagnostic radiation exposure, like from the CT, is measured.

The dosage or amount of radiation exposure that a patient receives from one scan is compared to the length of time in background exposure. For example, a low dose chest CT is believed to be the same amount as 6 months of background radiation exposure. The amount of exposure matters because with every CT that a patient has, their 10 | SEPTEMBER GLO 2025 |

chance of developing cancer increases. Children are more sensitive to radiation exposure due to the increased rate of cell division and number of years left of life to develop cancer due to exposure.

LISA MUNGOVAN

Fort Wayne native and business owner Lisa Mungovan is helping her city thrive by unlocking the potential of small businesses and not-for-profit organizations (NFPs).

Mungovan earned an Associate’s degree in Operations from Indiana University Fort Wayne and a Bachelor’s degree in Organization Leadership and Supervision from Purdue Fort Wayne. Over the last 20 years, she has worked as an HR Generalist, earning the titles of Consultant, Senior Consultant, Manager, Director, and Senior Director.

“My various jobs have required me to travel to other cities and states, but I’m proud to live in Fort Wayne,” she boasted about her city. “When I get the opportunity, I help potential applicants see the many things Northeast Indiana has to offer.”

“During my career, I have completed various Human Resources certifications that were specific to each company. Those included compensation systems, leadership models, process flow analyses, ISO, etc,” Mungovan described.

In June 2016, she established Mungovan HR Consulting, LLC aligned with her knowledge and experience as an HR Generalist. She revises Employee Handbooks, completes HR Audits, guides clients on navigating employee relations issues, provides Culture Assessments, and performs Hostile Work Environment Investigations.

Mungovan works with small, medium, and large companies, but she chose to focus on small businesses because they contribute a lot to our economy in Northeast Indiana. After starting her own business, she realized that NFPs provide critical support to our communities. She is proud to find methods to educate others and identify ways to support them.

One of her key roles is to review the existing HR systems of small businesses and NFP organizations, and work with them to develop a comprehensive HR Management system that will grow in tandem with their pursuit. She helps them understand the importance of culture, communications, and consistent practices, and how to navigate employee relations issues.

“My goal is to be a respected partner who helps each business owner and non-profit organization Leader with all of their HR needs,” Mongovan explained.

Almost 41 years ago, Mungovan married Matt, the love of her life. They have three daughters, two sons-in-law, a grandson, a granddaughter, and two grand dogs. Even with a full plate, she makes time to volunteer. She serves as Secretary on the NIBCC (Northeast Indiana Base Community Council), facilitates communications for 84 organizations in NIMAN (Northeast Indiana Military Assistance Network), and volunteers with her daughter Jenna at the Whitley County Humane Shelter.

“During my 10 years in business, I’ve met many interesting individuals and have had the honor of working with different industries,” the entrepreneur informed. She uses her strengths of connectedness, arranging, maximizing, individualization, and responsibility to help her clients meet their full potential. She grows her network by connecting with others and providing warm introductions to colleagues, sharing job opportunities, leadership tips, and business events on social media so others can benefit from them.

Mungovan shows us what an impact businesses can have on the community when we all work together. As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” a

Jeff Markley grew up in New Haven, Indiana. When he left to go to Indiana University in Bloomington, he thought he would never come back to this area. In 1986, after earning his bachelor’s in public affairs with a focus on criminal justice, he moved back.

“And of course, 40 years later, I’m still here and happy about it,” said Markley. “Fort Wayne has been a great place to live and to evolve, and it’s a great feeling to be part of a community for the long term.”

His first job in Fort Wayne was at Park Center. From there, Markley began working for the Allen County Health Department. When he was hired, HIV and AIDS was relatively new, and the grant that he was hired under was $10,000 for six months.

“I know my parents thought I was crazy for taking a job that only was guaranteed for six months,” said Markley. “But that’s just where I was called to go.”

Markley was at the Health Department for six years and became the first HIV and AIDS program coordinator. His job centered around testing and education. The emphasis at the time was for people to know their HIV status to interrupt the transmission process.

“We were just beginning to get medications like AZT,” said Markley.

“We knew the medications were horrible. We knew they wouldn’t work forever, but you hoped that somebody could take the medication long enough, that new medications would come out that would work a little bit better and a little bit longer so that those people could be around for what we hoped would be a cure.”

In 1988, while working for the Health Department, Markley began volunteering at the AIDS Task Force. It was a 3-year-old, grassroots organization that met in the basement of Lutheran Hospital. He became a “Buddy” to somebody with HIV, going grocery shopping, taking them to doctor’s appointments, or just going to sit with them at home.

“It was a horribly traumatic and sad time because so many people were disowned by family, so they were on their own and really needed friends– or buddies– to help them navigate this horrible medical journey,” he explained.

In 1989, Markley returned to school, and in 1993, graduated with a Master of Public Administration. Shortly after, he decided he needed to take a break from the HIV field due to the emotional toll it was taking on him. He began working in landscape design and management, all the while continuing to volunteer at the AIDS Task Force.

In 2013, Markley returned to his original career path by becoming executive director of the AIDS Task Force. Under his leadership, the organization embarked on a rebranding effort, which resulted in a name change to the Positive Resource Connection in 2015. In 2015, the agency changed its name to Northeast Indiana Positive Resource Connection. This change positioned the agency to remain relevant, accurately reflected the work being done, and reduced barriers for people needing services. According to the organization’s website, “today, the Positive Resource Connection serves 400 people living with HIV, educates 8,000 people a year, and tests more than 1,500 for HIV. In 2016, the agency expanded its services to include syphilis and hepatitis C testing. In 2020 it added viral hepatitis case management services for persons living with Hepatitis C.” Markley enjoys knowing that his work has a positive impact and can lift others up. He considers himself lucky to love his work. “I love our mission; I’m passionate and compassionate about it,” he said. “I don’t have the ‘Sunday night dreads’ that some people have about the weekend ending.”

In addition to being passionate about his work, Markley loves to travel and experience different cultures. His trips have included whitewater rafting on the Nile, gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda, and working with an HIV women’s group in Kenya.

“Africa is a huge passion spot for me… and talk about life changing,” he said. “The culture, the people– it’s pretty amazing and it’s a great grounding experience to be able to appreciate what I have.” a | SEPTEMBER GLO 2025 |

When Women Thrive at Work,

Everyone Benefits By the Women’s Fund of Greater Fort Wayne

In March, the Women’s Fund released our third Women in the Workplace Scorecard, powered by our 2024 Compass Survey. With 75 employers participating, our largest sample yet, we gained the clearest picture so far of how Allen County workplaces support women in leadership, compensation, benefits, and equitable hiring.

The results give us much to celebrate, and more to push forward.

Women in Leadership Let’s start with the good news: the median percentage of women in leadership roles (VP or higher) among participating organizations is 50%, well above the national average of 39%. That’s real momentum.

But the numbers shift when we look at women of color.

They hold just 6% of top roles, lower than the national average (9%) and well below Allen County’s demographics, where 22% of women are women of color.

We know that companies with at least 30% women leaders are 12 times more likely to rank in the top 20% of financial performance. Firms with women at the top generate a 10.1% return on equity, compared to 7.4% for those without.

Advancing all women isn’t just the right thing: it’s the smart thing.

The Wage Gap Hits Home Allen County’s average salary in 2024 was $60,301, below Indiana’s average ($64,322) and far behind the national average ($75,878).

That means workers here are earning just 79.5 cents on the dollar compared to the rest of the country.

We use the MIT Living Wage Calculator to define self-sufficiency.

A single adult needs to earn at least $21.23 an hour to meet basic needs. Among the employers we surveyed, the average entrylevel wage was $18.77, up from $16.14 two years ago, but still not enough to make ends meet. The range? $11.50 to $29.

Nationally, just 30% of top earners are women. In our local data, that number doubled to 60%. But most employers missed recognition in this category because their starting wages were too low.

One easy way to close wage gaps? Stop asking job candidates about their salary history. It’s a practice that locks in past inequities — especially for women and people of color.

Policies That Make Work Work for Women From childcare to financial security, we asked employers what benefits they offer. The answers were wide-ranging and revealing.

Supports included: • Paid family leave, separate from vacation time • Childcare stipends or onsite care • Flexible scheduling and remote work • Retirement matching with automatic enrollment • Paid leave for domestic violence survivors • Free menstrual products • Financial education, legal services, and more We celebrated employers that auto-enroll employees in retirement programs — because participation jumps by 90%. We also lifted up those offering at least two weeks of paid parental leave, so women don’t have to burn vacation days to care for newborns.

These benefits aren’t fluff. Women who are safe at home, supported in caregiving, and equipped with financial tools are far more likely to stay and grow in the workplace.

CO-PARENTING:

the collaborative approach to raising your family

Co-parenting requires the diplomatic acumen of a career politician, the teamwork of a major league ball club, the patience of a seasoned educator, and the communication skills of a UN translator. It is a relationship that is born out of a divorce or at the end of another significant arrangement and compels couples to cast aside their raw emotions and pain to put their children’s needs ahead of their own. It isn’t easy, but it is worth it if it means raising confident, well-adjusted children who are secure in their parents’ love. Here are a few key tips to help you navigate your new partnership:

• Love your kids more than you hate each other. We get it. You’ve been through a lot, and you may be feeling a lot of emotions, but your children need to feel good about the new family dynamic. Keep your kids at the forefront of your new relationship and leave your personal baggage behind.

• It’s a collaboration, not a competition. Co-parenting is a partnership, not a time to try and one-up the other person in terms of gifts, vacations, or permissive behavior.

Remember, the more you present a united front when it comes to raising your children, the better off everyone will be.

• Communication is key. Peaceful, consistent, and purposeful communication with your former spouse or partner is essential for successful co-parenting. Approach every conversation with the highest mindset and keep your kid the focal point in order to minimize any potential conflict.

• Learn to let some things go. You and your ex are two different people, and you are going to have different parenting styles. That’s OK! As long as your co-parent follows through on their commitments/agreements, let them parent the way they want without micromanaging the situation. Trust that if they need your help/input they will ask for it.

• Set clear boundaries from the start. Some things are non-negotiable and the sooner you and your ex hammer those things out and honor those wishes, the happier everyone will be.

• Be open and inviting. Does your child have a parent teacher meeting coming up?

A sports/school club schedule that may require a time commitment from your ex as well as you? Be sure to talk about it! Invite them to be an active participant in their children’s lives and don’t forget to include grandparents. Not everyone can be at every event, so the more people you have to draw on for help, the better!

• Be thoughtful. Help your children purchase a gift for your co-parent on their birthday and significant holidays. While it doesn’t have to be expensive, it will show your children and the other person how much you value their role in your children’s lives.

• A well-meaning compliment goes a lot farther than a thinly veiled insult. We all know that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar, so if your co-parent does a great job with your kids, be sure to tell them that. We all need the support of our teammates.

• Never give up. Co-parenting is a long-term partnership that will change and evolve over time. There will be good days, bad days, and all kinds of challenges in between.

Ovarian Cancer

Each September, we honor the legacy of our magazine’s namesake, Gloria Baumgartner, whose life was cut short by ovarian cancer in 2008. Gloria was more than a colleague—she was a cherished friend, a devoted wife and mother, and a cornerstone of The Papers (glo’s parent company), where she served as business manager and treasurer. Her husband, Ron, continues her legacy as president and publisher.

This month, in remembrance of Gloria and in support of all who have been touched by this disease, we’re sharing updated recommendations on ovarian cancer risk factors and screening guidelines. Our hope is to help raise awareness, encourage proactive conversations with healthcare providers, and empower women with knowledge—because awareness can be lifesaving While mortality rates have decreased over the last several decades, The American Cancer Society still estimates that over 12,000 women will die from ovarian cancer this year and an additional 20,890 will be diagnosed. According to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA), “ovarian cancer is the deadliest of type of gynecological cancers and accounts for one percent of all new cancer cases in the United States.” They also report that the five-year survival rate is approximately 51.6 percent.

The ovaries and fallopian tubes are a significant part of the female reproductive system. Ovaries make and store eggs prior to release and fertilization, and they also produce female hormones. The fallopian tubes are connected to the ovaries and transport eggs to the uterus for fertilization or shedding. Ovarian epithelial cancer and fallopian tube cancer affect these two organs specifically and can spread to other parts of the reproductive system.

Median diagnostic age for ovarian cancer is 63, with the highest rates being in women ages 55-64, and average age of death is 70, according to the OCRA. This is mainly because risk increases as a woman ages and it is difficult to diagnosis ovarian cancer early due to its vague and subtle symptoms. Common symptoms include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, increased frequency or urgency with urination and issues with eating and feeling full. Less common symptoms include fatigue, back pain, constipation, irregularities with menstrual cycles and pain during intercourse.

The National Cancer Institute states that major risk factors for ovarian cancer are hormone replacement therapy, obesity, endometriosis and family history. Family history of breast and colorectal cancer increases risk significantly due to mutation in genes related to family cancer

syndrome. Women who inherit the mutated genes BRCA1 or BRCA 2 are up to 70 percent more likely of develop ovarian cancer. Birthing your first child after the age of 35 has also shown to increase risk.

There are some steps women can take to lower their risk of developing ovarian cancer. Having a full-term pregnancy before age 26, breast feeding and subsequent full-term pregnancies all decrease risk. Using birth control, specifically oral contraceptives, greatly lowers risk and is directly proportion it to how long the contraceptive is used. Other types of birth control have also been proven to help lower risk, according to The American Cancer Society.

If you suspect you may have ovarian cancer due to symptoms or family history reach out to your provider immediately. They will discuss your family history, current concerns, and may perform a pelvic exam to check for enlarged ovaries or fluid in the abdomen. If ovarian cancer is suspected, you will be referred to a gynecological oncologist who specializes in this form of cancer. Your oncologist will probably order some diagnostic imaging such as an ultrasound, CT or MRI, a colonoscopy may also be ordered. Sometimes a laparoscopy, a procedure which uses a thin light and camera that is inserted through a small incision, which allows doctors to view organs internally can be used. The American Cancer Society states that biopsy of any mass is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of cancer.

Prognosis and treatment of cancer are dependent on the type, stage, and amount of cancer. Whether the cancer diagnosis is new, reoccurring or metastasized also affects treatment options. According to the National Cancer Institute, common treatment options include surgery, removal of the mass and possibly ovaries or other affected organs, chemotherapy, targeted medication therapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy.

Speak with your healthcare provider if you have family history of cancer, have had genetic counseling or are experiencing symptoms that may be related to ovarian cancer. The earlier ovarian cancer is detected and treated, the better the prognosis. a | SEPTEMBER GLO 2025 |

Scotland

“Sisters, sisters, there were never such devoted sisters…” True to the song, Ellie Bogue and her sister Margaret set off for Scotland on June 4 and returned home through O’Hare on June 13.

What did they do in the meantime? “The original plan for this trip included three sisters, but my oldest sister [Susan] had a kidney transplant three years ago. She is doing great, but she was unable to come on the trip,” Bogue explained. Sounds simple enough, until you know that Bogue was the kidney donor, and Margaret was part of Susan’s support team during her recovery!

“This trip was a celebration of life moving forward after all that!”

The sisters had discussed returning to Scotland over the year; as children, they toured the country in a five-seat Hillman Minx rental car with their parents. Bogue was nine, Margaret was 12, and Susan was 15.

After so much expectation and planning, how was the trip? Bogue said, “It was better than my expectations! I was prepared for the Scotland of my childhood–lots of oat cakes, tea, and dinner at 9 p.m. because High Tea was all you could get at 6 p.m. Times have changed! I realized coffee and espresso were regular staples there, and High Tea was a thing of the past. But I remembered the land’s beauty, and the reality of it when you are hiking in it is so much more!

On our second day, the climb required both hands and feet to navigate a narrow ledge.

From the top, the sisters were rewarded with an incredible view of the iconic Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr rock formations.

“I had always wanted to get out of the car and head for the hills, but my parents easily overruled me. They were both history professors and wanted to look at castles and cathedrals,” Bogue recalled. “It was a great tour, but I dreamed of climbing those hills someday.”

“Traveling with my sister was a highlight — we laughed over old times and compared our very different memories of our first trip,” Bogue said.

And now she has. “Margaret and I decided to go on a hiking trip. We found Wilderness Scotland, which does all sorts of trips at varying skill levels; we ended up doing the Isle of Sky and Outer Hebrides, a 7-day tour.

All tours are small groups — eight people

And were there surprises? “I had not expected the culture to be different from when I was a child. I felt like a stranger in a strange land then; I felt very much at home on this trip,” Bogue explained. “They still serve blood pudding, which I won’t eat, but the food

overall was great. Lots of fresh seafood! The last night of the tour, we had a seven-course tasting dinner of locally sourced foods. And the people were very welcoming; we are a global community now.”

Bogue said they planned this trip a year before they went.

Knowing there would be plenty of uphill climbs, Bogue dedicated the winter to extra cardio at the gym — mostly elliptical workouts, with some leg and upper-body strength training for good measure. (A wise investment!) Before departure, she also learned a travel visa was required. Thankfully, their tour company sent a direct link to the government website, and the entire application was completed online in under thirty minutes.

“I definitely overpacked,” Bogue continued.

“Next time I will be more strategic about the number of clothing items I bring. I had to check my bag both ways.”

Flip your Backyard for the Season

As the days grow shorter, our opportunities to enjoy autumn increase. Roasting marshmallows around a fire in the backyard can be more enjoyable when wrapped in a cozy, well-placed throw blanket on a cool evening. We remember the beauty of what we have done in the hectic growing season as we look at the beauty of autumn’s deep, vibrant, warm tones in flowers and fabrics. We can maximize those seasonal pleasures with a little planning and foresight in the garden, in our outdoor decorating, and with outdoor lighting that is classic and effective in nature.

A cornucopia of treats–for the eyes and tastebuds–beckon homeowners in the cooler months. Straw bales, cornstalks, or sunflowers can add personality. You could even try lining your porch with the classic pop of vibrant mums, in the ground or in containers. Native plantings like asters, milkweed, and coneflowers can give the garden a great presence of color and be kinder to the environment than some of their more maintenance-heavy counterparts. For a little DIY seasonal personality, you might even try using a hollowed-out pumpkin as a planter.

Fall is also a great time to look forward to spring’s arrival. Planting bulbs like daffodil, tulip, and crocus, that will join us after a winter’s rest is an endeavor for this time of year. In most of Indiana, the middle of September to the middle of October is an ideal time to plant bulbs (2).

Planting in this range of time allows the bulb to establish roots but not be fooled into thinking it is time to bloom.

The Fall vegetable garden, whose shining stars look much like spring’s, allow for fresh flavor close to home. Carrots, celery, and lettuce can handle a light frost, while their counterparts like cabbage, onions, parsley, peas, and radishes will take more cold.
