Happy New Year glo readers!

In my January 2020 Editor’s Note, I rehashed what was a challenging year and hoped that 2021 would be better.

That hope quickly waned as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to affect our small business community and this publication.

Just like in 2020, we had to take 2021 issue by issue. Except for April, we combined glo and HOME Living every month this year to help our advertisers and our publications weather the pandemic-related financial hardships.

We enter 2022 cautiously optimistic, with a new, refreshed, and super glossy look for glo. And, as I have mentioned in my November and December Editor’s Notes, we have officially combined glo and HOME Living under the glo brand and masthead. This is our first issue featuring the new format. We hope you enjoy the HOME section filled with DIY ideas, décor inspiration, gardening tips and more, which you can count on every month.

The New Year is an opportunity to look ahead, and armed with a publication we are proud of, that’s just what we are doing. We look forward to being here for you well into the future, and we are excited for what lies ahead.

As for me, personally, I am looking forward to a year focused on family, friends, and all the little things that make life so special. I hope you have a moment to reflect on your year and make plans for 2022.

I am inspired by timeless faces, earthy tones, and loose mark making. I find inspiration in nature, reading, and watching documentaries about people or about art.

What is your preferred medium?

I love charcoal and rich oil paint and often combine them with an unfinished look. Inks and spray paints are also fun. I always, always finish with oil. You just can’t beat that depth.

This piece started with a lot of playful marks and colors, as well as a collage piece. Then, as with a lot of my work, I was inspired by the eyes of the model. I love the serious, thoughtful look as if she has a story to tell and a lot of inner strength.

What advice do you have for other artists just starting out?

We are all just starting out really. My advice is to PLAY as much as possible. Avoid ruts. Avoid all fear. Try new materials and find the things that make your unique self most fully alive. Also, get connected to other like-minded artists even if they’re found only online.

How did you get started creating art?

Artwork must be photographed at a high-resolution (300+ dpi) for reproduction.

Winter Wedding FASHION TRENDS

As the world continues to find some semblance of normalcy after almost two years of living the pandemic life, large gatherings have started to resume, none more exciting than the celebration of two people saying “I do” to their forever life partner. After more than a year of wedding postponements and smaller, slimmed down ceremonies, brides and grooms are ready to party and celebrate their love with their families and friends.

Winter weddings are known for their elegance and class. The snow and sparkle of the season make a beautiful background. This winter, the darker colors that typically go along with a winter wedding are being replaced by neutrals and lighter, softer colors.

Terri Francis-Ahlfeld owns The Francis Shoppe in Wabash, Indiana, with her mother, and the two of them have been dressing the mothers and grandmothers of brides and grooms for many years. Terri likes to ensure that mothers and grandmothers are put in colors that will complement the wedding party so that photos look outstanding. As a tailor, she ensures that every dress is perfectly fitted so that mom and grandma feel their very best as they celebrate the special day with their families.

Terri says that she’s seeing a lot of January weddings and that lavender and light mauve have been popular colors. Muted colors are in style for women.

If you attend some weddings this winter, don’t be surprised to see the bride walking down the aisle in a pantsuit or jumpsuit. Pants are all the rage for those brides who may be averse to dresses or looking for something different, more comfortable, and empowering.

Flattering corset dresses are also very popular and add a subtle hint of edginess to a bridal gown. Lace is also a popular fabric choice and adds a softness and elegance to many dresses this winter.

For those brides who like to be a bit unconventional but still wear a dress, short and mini dresses are comfortable and stylish and sets a bride apart from the crowd.

If you’re looking for the traditional bridesmaid dresses that are one color and one style this winter, you may be disappointed. Mix and match bridesmaid dresses are in, as well as prints that bring whimsy and fun to the bridal party. Pantsuits and jumpsuits are not only popular with brides, but with their bridesmaids, as well.

Grooms typically wear a tuxedo or suit in one solid, classic color. This winter, however, grooms are straying away from tradition as they incorporate geometric knitwear, microprints, and oversized checks to their style. Terri says that she’s seeing a lot of graphite and navy for men.

Neutrals, tans and beiges are also popular choices for grooms and groomsmen.

Setting up a realistic self-care routine is important—now more than ever— and the new year is the perfect time to start. Not sure what self-care regimen is right for you? No worries. There’s no one-size fits all solution. What’s important is to take time to listen to your body and soul and find solutions that are customized to your specific needs. Here are six tips to get you started.

Tip #1 Start Small.

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to be effective.

On the contrary, the key to a valuable self-care routine is consistency.

According to Amy Dollier at Massage Envy, the first and most important step is to check in with yourself daily. Even focusing on something positive for 10-15 minutes each day can reap dividends in energy and peace.

Tip #4 Self-Care Is For Everyone.

Contrary to typical stereotypes, self-care isn’t just for stressed-out moms.

“We don’t have a typical client here at Massage Envy,” said Dollier. “It varies widely…from male to female, thirteen-year-olds to eighty-year-olds.” Some teens opt for facials to improve acne, while older clients appreciate a facial’s hydration as the perfect cure for dry winter skin. Athletes can benefit from massages and guided stretching to reduce sports injuries, while parents of all types—those who work outside the home and those who choose to stay at home—can find rest and renewal with a CBD massage.

Tip #3 Remember Your Reason.

According to Dollier, self-care reduces stress, increases energy, eliminates symptoms of depression or anxiety, and even improves concentration. So, while many people might think self-care is selfish, it helps you give the best version of yourself to others.

As a nurse, motivational speaker, and spiritual guide, you could say Sherrell Mims is a triple threat. She’s equally devoted to all her pursuits, but one project, in particular, has occupied her heart and mind recently.

It’s an online association called the Global Caregivers Network.

“My heart is for caregivers,” she said. “That’s my niche. That’s what I do. I’ve been doing that for 25 years and counting. So that’s the main thing that I’m doing now.”

A former caregiver herself, she said it’s important to provide resources and support for this special group of people. Her intent is to spotlight caregivers and share their phenomenal stories and broaden the scope and reach globally. Currently, the group touches people living in the United States, but Mims estimates that it’ll quickly become a tool to reach people in all corners of the world.

Along the same lines, she’s publishing an eBook called “5 tips to be the best caregiver” and ultimately a more exhaustive version of the manuscript that includes 30 tips.

At the same time, she has set a goal to expand her public speaking engagements in 2022.

“Now, since things are slowly opening back up, I want to speak at hospitals, clinics, colleges, universities and beyond,” she said.

All of this to say: Sherrell is full of energy and enthusiasm yet still finds time for rest. Although her free time is at a premium between juggling all her obligations, she still finds time for self-care.

“I try to get the six to eight hours of rest, no matter what,” she said.

“Because you still need that as a caregiver to be refreshed, relaxed, renewed, and push that reset button to start another day.”

In addition, she finds renewal in attending church services and going to concerts at the Clyde Theatre. “The ambiance is just so beautiful, and the food and people are great,” she said. “It’s a nice getaway.”

Travel is another one of her hobbies, and her hope is to integrate it into her work. Soon, she plans to take up travel nursing. “This gives me a chance to meet real caregivers now,” she said. “This way, I’ll be in the trenches with them. And that’s what my whole Global Caregivers Network is all about. I know God will take care of this.

I just know I was to be obedient and start the Global Caregivers Network.”

Christopher Roberts knows that there is only so much a student can learn while sitting behind a desk. As a Construction Trades instructor with the Fort Wayne Community Schools’ (FWCS) Career Academy, he helps kids get the practical experience they need to graduate high school with more than a diploma.

“In every trade, there is a certification component – the specific training requirements that employers are looking for,” he said.

“They want to know exactly what a student is qualified to do, and we help them achieve those benchmarks so they are ready to enter the workforce whether they go to college or not.”

The Career Academy serves about 850-900 students each year across 11 programs that offer industry certifications, licenses, and dual college credits to prepare them for in-demand jobs or give them a jump start on their post-secondary education.

To recognize the local talent that the academy developed over the course of an academic year, Roberts implemented a yearend signing ceremony that is usually associated with student athletes. Last spring, 50 Career Academy students signed with a total of 38 local businesses and military units, which filled Roberts with a source of pride.

“Once upon a time, the Career Academy was considered to be a ‘drop out’ program, but now, in order to join you have to be on track to graduate,” he said. “As a result, we see a whole melting pot of kids who come to our programs, and it’s incredible to see them come together as a team in their subject areas.”

Roberts comes by his desire to help students learn something new and improve their occupational chances honestly. His mother was a preschool teacher for 40 years. His two brothers are educators. His sister is a college level professor, and although his father was in the construction business, he too had a teaching license and served as an athletic coach.

“Teaching is in my veins, and I am fortunate enough to have a job as a contractor that allows me to work with the Career Academy and help students find their niche,” he said. “If you meet them where they are and make them part of a team, you really get the best out of them. They come in with a natural curiosity about something and we nurture that curiosity, build a relationship, and get them ready to become the skilled workforce of the future. I’m lucky to be part of that.” a

Giving to her Division I rowing team at Indiana University.

Giving to her Christian mission work through Chi Alpha and Athletes in Action.

Giving to her family of three younger siblings, mom, dad, and dogs.

Giving to her exercise science major in the hopes of giving more as an orthopedic surgeon.

And giving to a cause passionate to her: working with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), an organization committed to fighting blood cancers.

Now on the leadership team of LLS, 18-year-old IU freshman Evy Murphy raised about $40,000 during her junior year at Carroll High School as part of the organization’s Students of the Year program. She has also worked, and continues to work, for campaigns LLS runs.

Evy sees special meaning in her work for LLS. “I decided to work on this project because of the impact that cancer has had on my family and friends,” she said. “Around one in five people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, so it will impact us all in some way.”

Making a positive impact in one’s own community is something Murphy clearly advocates. “…It is important to be part of something bigger than yourself,” she said. “This will allow you to serve the community while meeting amazing people and learning about the world and yourself.”

“The biggest challenge…,” she said, “is being far from home.

It is always easier to work on a big project like this when in the company of people with similar goals. However, I have been able to stay connected with the leadership team pretty well while in college.”

Evy has found staying connected to her family a valuable personal support. “My family,” she said, “has helped and been teammates and supporters throughout my work on both the campaigns and leadership team.”

She also meets life’s general demands with some general joy.

“I love to explore fun new coffee shops and watch the sunset,” she said. “I always love going out for ice cream or to get cookies. I love to spend Sundays at church and relaxing after a busy week of classes and practices.” a

This month, it’s Amy Henke. Amy and her husband Chris have 3 children, which keep them very busy. Amy was a hair stylist for 10 years, and just last year, she stepped away to be home with her children. She is the co-owner of Growing Up Goods, an online children’s boutique, and on top of all of that, she started a business called SPACES a year ago to share her love of organizing with others.

“It has been so fun to help others love their homes that are clutter free,” she said.

Tell us a little about the areas you’ve highlighted in your home.

Playroom The playroom was the first room I wanted done right when we moved in. I love this space because it is right off the main living room, and I can hear all their giggles (and fights) and watch their creative little minds play.

Kitchen The kitchen is the center of our home. When we built it, we wanted it to be a place our friends and family wanted to gather. We love hosting and this is a perfect space for all our people.

Master bedroom I wanted this space to be cozy. I added just a tiny splash of color in this space! I get anxious with clutter so I made sure this space was peaceful and a place I can slow down and just be—even if sometimes little, tiny humans sneak in here for snuggles.

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as minimalist, simple details, open with light-filled spaces.

I get asked all the time how I keep a white house clean, and my answer is a magic eraser!

I believe I only have 3 colors in my house white, black, and wood. I love neutrals.

Establish GOALS for the New Year

Everyone needs a fresh start occasionally, and kids are no exception. That’s what the new year offers, after all, a blank slate full of fresh new possibilities.

As parents, you can take advantage of the push for New Year’s resolutions to help your children learn about the power of setting—and achieving—their own personal goals.

Here are some best practices to follow as you help your child develop their goals: Best Practice #1: Model the behavior and skills you want to see in your kids. Setting some family goals first will help your children learn the process with you. Sample family goals could include running a 5k together, tackling a new hiking trail, planning a family game night once a month, or even completing family chores by noon every Saturday.

Reasons for kids to set goals As with most learning opportunities, the process of setting and reaching a goal is just as valuable as the achievement itself. Learning to set a realistic personal goal offers several positive benefits for your kids, including: • Understanding the value of hard work and personal investment • Experiencing a boost in self-confidence when they reach their stated outcome • Establishing self-discipline and routines • Developing responsibility and accountability • Realizing the power of a “growth mindset,” which empowers them to be part of creating the future they desire How to help kids set goals No one wants to set their kids up for failure, so it’s important to help your children create realistic goals—ones that are appropriate for their own personal skill and maturity levels, not to mention the family resources required to help them achieve those goals. If your child’s goal is to hike the Appalachian Trail, for instance, but you can’t take an entire summer off to accompany him or her, you might want to help that child set a more realistic goal for now.

Best Practice #2: Let children take the lead. They will be more invested in the process if they choose the goals themselves. Help them think about skills they want to acquire or experiences they want to explore. Consider fears they might want to conquer or improvements they want to make in sports, school, or at home. Finances, travel, and fitness are fair game, too.

Best Practice #3: Make it measurable. A goal without a system to measure progress is just a dream. If you want your kids to be successful, keep their goal setting SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-sensitive.

Best Practice #4: Keep goals on display. Writing down goals and posting them in a public place will go a long way toward keeping those goals front and center. And remember that it’s okay to adjust the goals throughout the year.

Best Practice #5: Celebrate the small steps toward success.

Cryptocurrency: You might be familiar with the term, but not the nuances per se. A cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that is secured by cryptography, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or doublespend. Cryptocurrency has been around for some time, but it has gained steam in the last few years. The first blockchain-based cryptocurrency was Bitcoin, which remains the most popular and most valuable.

Consumers might be tempted to dabble in this area, but they should do so with caution and an informed approach. That’s the advice from the technology team at STAR Financial Bank.

“Ultimately, we view this like any other product,” said Brian Avery, digital strategy vice president, technology at STAR Financial Group. “It’s not any different than certain stocks. There’s risk involved in any investment.

And we’ve got to make sure that it makes sense for you.”

That’s why according to Avery they’re making investing in cryptocurrency less daunting by offering a new product. Traditionally, endusers have been required to establish new financial relationships to manage their crypto holdings – often with unregulated entities.

Now, they will have an option to acquire, sell, hold, and manage bitcoin alongside their traditional assets. STAR Bank is the first bank in the state of Indiana to offer bitcoin trading services to customers.

Still, this doesn’t come without risk.

“I think that the risk is also kind of the advantage, as well, like how volatile the market is,” said Avery. “When you’re looking at the market, it’s changing every minute, every second. So, you know, it could lose its value in a second. And there’s not really anything you can do, but it can also skyrocket up and you can quickly sell. So, I think that that is probably one of the main risks is just knowing that the market is very volatile. And that means it’s moving all the time, up and down.”

Another advantage, as Avery points out, is that it can be a way to bet against the market.

In his words, “a lot of people consider it an alternative. Because there’s a finite number.

Some people invest in it as a hedge. It’s just another way to store value.”

Whatever your reason for investing in this alternative, Avery suggests that consumers get the counsel of a financial advisor. He or she can help you come up with a game plan to invest prudently.

Another important point: Although cryptocurrency bills itself as a form of money, the Internal Review Service (IRS) considers it a financial asset or property. That means if you reap capital gains in selling or trading it, the government wants a piece of the profits. On May 20, 2021, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced a proposal that would require taxpayers to report any cryptocurrency transaction of $10,000 to the IRS. How exactly proceeds would be taxed—as capital gains or ordinary income—depends on how long the taxpayer held the cryptocurrency.

The start of a new year ushers in thoughts of what we would like to do differently. Often, we will focus on personal improvement, but the concept of change applies to our homes too. Whether you’re making official resolutions or just jotting down a wish list, we’ve rounded up some ideas for your consideration to restyle your home in 2022.

She offers suggestions to customers she works with to help them meet their goals. “They just want to freshen up their home,” she said.

Sprucing up can happen in a number of ways.

Painting interior walls can give a significant lift to a home. “The whites are in,” Watercutter said. “To complement the look, I put different textures with it. You can use leather. I use a bunch of textures using different fabrics.”

Adding a new chair and simply rearranging the chairs you already own can provide a pick-meup. The proper throw that is draped over a chair just-so, along with some well-chosen pillows, can do wonders to pull your current ho-hum look (that could be pretty if you weren’t so tired of it) into a fabulous must-see. And don’t forget that a change in the flooring can add a wow factor.

While you’re at it, maybe adopt a new attitude.

It’s the season to appreciate what we have and not worry so much about keeping up with the neighbors. And in these times, maybe we can let go of the idea that our homes need to be perfect to have people over. A warm welcome will be remembered more than whether a home has followed the latest decor trend.

Midwest living comes naturally to Lindsay and Joe Platt, who met in 2002 at Butler University in Indianapolis, where they both studied music.

“I asked him to accompany my voice recitals, and twenty years later we’re still making music together!” laughed Lindsay. “We were married in 2007 while still in Indianapolis. We have lived in several cities and spent three years in Japan.

Our time in other places was wonderful, but also cemented a desire to live closer to our families in Indiana and Ohio.”

Joe grew up in Fort Wayne, and says he has fond memories, including attending performances at the Philharmonic and visiting the Zoo, playing music and street hockey with friends, and exploring the woods along Cedar Creek at his grandparent’s home. He and Lindsay moved to Fort Wayne in 2015 to follow a work opportunity for Joe and to be closer to family.

While Lindsay says she will always be a Clevelander at heart, Fort Wayne has also become home.

“I am thankful for my opportunity to work with the Fort Wayne Children’s Choir as their Director of Development,” she said. “I am blessed to be part of a community that cares for one another, loves the arts, has a deep history, and offers cultural amenities for our friends and family.”

Joe’s memories were a favorable starting point, according to the couple. “When we decided to come here and started looking for a place to live, the city quickly exceeded our expectations and we’ve never looked back! Our first three years we rented in the Harrison next to Parkview Field and experienced firsthand the vibrancy of our rapidly developing downtown neighborhood.

The growth of activity, dining, and culture in our city is truly remarkable. We found the people and character of the near-downtown Lakeside neighborhood irresistible and moved there in 2018, a short river greenway bicycle ride away from all the activity of downtown in the summertime.”

The Platts said what they love most about this city and its people is that it feels like a meeting place. “The meeting of the rivers and the natural 28

consequences of that geographic feature must have started things off,” said Lindsay. “We feel it today in our friends and neighbors of many backgrounds and perspectives, and in the way we are able to speak to one another even when we have a difference of opinion. The people of this city share a genuine interest in each other and how we can all work together to keep making this a truly fulfilling place to live.”

Joe and Lindsay are involved in the community in several ways. Joe is a partner at Endodontic Associates and is currently the Secretary of the Isaac Knapp District Dental Society. This December, he was also the piano accompanist for Heartland Sings’ Spirit of Christmas concerts at the Allen County Courthouse.

Do you want to declutter your home to get a fresh start for the new year?

Here are some tips from two local experts.

Lauren Bower, professional organizer and owner of Bowerbird Organizing, said to just get started and not try to get it perfect. “Little, consistent steps matter,” she said. “Even just one newly tidied kitchen drawer can give you a sense of calm and the momentum to keep going.”

Emily Fitzgerald, a certified professional organizer and the owner of OLS Organizing, suggested starting with the room that is impacting you in the worst way. But if you need to flex your “organizing muscle,” you can start with a smaller or easier space. She said there is no wrong way to do it, but if you are working on a bigger project, you may want to break it down into smaller pieces.

If you are feeling particularly overwhelmed, Emily said to use “the magic rule of three.” Every day, go into the room you are working on and find three things to deal with - things that need to be put somewhere else, recycled, thrown out, or put in a box to donate. If you do that each

day, by the end of the month, you will have made a difference in your space.

To help you decide what to keep and what to part with, Lauren suggested creating rules for yourself before you get started and writing them down so you are more likely to follow them.

Having these rules will also make it easier if someone is helping you. An example of a rule might be, “If it doesn’t fit and won’t fit by next year, I will donate it.”

If you have a lot of a particular item, Emily said you should ask yourself what a reasonable number of this item is to own and only keep that amount. If you are having difficulty parting with something, put it in a box to donate and label it with a date six months in the future. If you haven’t needed it or wanted it in that amount of time, let it go.

If you are having trouble staying focused, ask a friend or family member to work on a project with you. Or if you don’t have someone who can

help, Lauren suggested using a tool like focusmate.com to help you stay on task. The website matches you with another person who serves as your accountability partner as you work to get things done.

But if you don’t want to go it alone, or you have a big project to tackle, that’s when you may want to consider hiring a professional. Having someone who knows what they are doing can speed up the process and help keep you motivated when the going gets tough.

And Emily said to reward yourself for any amount of work that you do. “Our brains seek positive rewards. The more you reward it, the more you will want to do it,” she said. a

Pixel and Petal Crafts is a new online shop where creativity meets keepsakes. Founder Caity Rose started making polymer clay jewelry and figurines for fun as a teen. During COVID lockdown, she revisited her crafting hobby as a creative outlet. After purchasing a few supplies and with the continued support of family, friends, and coworkers, she launched her business. Rose has been selling her work since June 2021 and looks forward to celebrating the first anniversary of buying her first mold on January 17.

Rose is excited about adding “usables” such as trinket trays, coasters, games (dominoes/ drinking Jenga/ chess sets), bookmarks, pens, and notebooks to her inventory. She is constantly challenging herself to build a collection of unique ideas and molds. She proudly tells customers, “If you can imagine it, we can figure out how to make it.”

One of Rose’s leading supporters was her late grandmother, Nana Weezie.

“She’d be my top salesperson at every craft show (whether I invited her or not), helping me build displays, clean my workspace, etc.,” Rose mused, “I often find myself wanting to call her after I make something awesome or have a big sale day because I know I’d make her proud.”

Rose used crayons from her childhood to make earrings and dominoes, which serve as a physical reminder of the sleepovers, bike rides, and Skipbo game nights she shared with her grandma. She hopes to capture special memories for others in the jewelry and gifts she designs.

Not only does each design have significance, but the name Pixel and Petal itself is very symbolic.

Petal refers to her last name, Rose, and the flowers in her work. She calls it special memory floral preservation and uses flowers from momentous occasions to create physical memories. Some examples include a pair of earrings from a bride’s reception dress, a set of flower petal pendants from a grandmother’s funeral, and a picture frame for a friend who grew a garden with their young daughter this summer. The picture frame included strawberry blossoms, marigolds, carrots, and cucumber leaves.

Pixel is the name of Rose’s precocious, calico cat.

The feline serves as a model, project manager, and quality control. She tests earrings by knock-

ing them on the floor and inspects all items thoroughly. There is even a picture of a kitty swatting at earrings on her earring cards. Pixel also refers to Rose’s other full-time job in digital advertising.

Rose said one of her favorite parts of Pixel and Petal is the anticipation of popping a piece out of a mold. She has even made “demold with me” videos, showcasing her excitement. Another favorite part is each moment when she thinks, “Nana would be proud of me,” or “Nana would love this.”

You can find Pixel and Petal mostly on social media, but you can also find her at a few local craft markets per month. She posts her inventory on Facebook and Instagram and accepts custom orders on Etsy. Visit her at pixelandpetal.com. a

Kelly’s Kitchen This month’s Reader DIY project comes from Kelly O’Banion. She and her husband, Tim, remodeled their kitchen last summer. They transformed from primitive red and green to a crisp modern farmhouse white.

What was your inspiration for the project?

What did you like best about the undertaking?

We watch HGTV a lot so probably mostly that.

Tim – I just enjoy doing projects like this and then seeing the results.

How long did it take from start to finish?

About 3-1/2 to 4 months.

Was it easier or harder than you anticipated?

It was about what we expected. Nothing was too difficult, it just takes a lot of patience.

What was the total cost of the project?

Between $15,000 to $20,000.

What was the most challenging aspect?

Tim – Probably meeting my expectations, I’m kind of a perfectionist…

Where did you source the materials?

Preheat oven to 350°. Comb ine eggs, oil, honey and van illa; beat until smooth. In another bowl, whisk next 7 ingredients for 30 seconds. Stir flour mixture into egg mixture just until combined. Add carrots; mix well.

Pour batter into a lightly greased 9x5-in. loaf pan; bake until a toothpick inserted in center of loaf comes out clean, about 1 hour. Cool 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack. a
