Happy Spring glo readers – I’ve never been called a sun worshipper—my pale skin gives that away—but this year, I’ve found myself drawn to the bright rays every time they break through the clouds. I’ll take a moment, turn my face towards the sky, and let the sweet, sweet sunshine fill me up. It’s a moment of zen, and after the past few years, we can all use a little zen.

Speaking of sun worshippers, for many, April means spring break to the beach. This year will be the first year since I graduated from college that I’ll take a real spring break since we have a kindergartner in the house now. Pre-kindergarten, we could take a vacation whenever we wanted as we were not bound by the school calendar. I didn’t appreciate that freedom as much as I should have while I had it. Now, we must take our vacation when everyone else does. We have booked a cabin in the mountains of Tennessee—see what I mean, I am NOT a sun worshipper—rather I enjoy getting away to someplace calm, relaxing, and filled with beautiful nature. But I will be chasing those sunny rays as much as I can, not to bathe in it, but just to turn my face and soak a bit in.

Do you have plans for spring break? I’d love to hear about them. Whether you’re headed to the beach or someplace more land locked, send me some photos and we may include them in our next issue.

Spring is here. We’ve almost made it to summer, and you know what that means — it’s time to get outside and get some much needed Vitamin D. After spending two years canceling plans and hiding out in our homes, the pandemic finally (hopefully) seems to be winding down. As the world works its way back to some semblance of normalcy, we’re all itching to get out of the house and back to the pool and the beach. Let’s be honest, we could all use a little sun and fun therapy after the past few years.

If you’re looking to up your swimwear game this season, we’ve got some great tips and trends to keep you in style as you splash around. If you’re a little self-conscious about your waist size after two years of isolation and quarantine, belted swimwear is a trend you want to try. Wearing a belt around your waist can help you look trimmer. If you prefer a two piece, a thin belt can add some flair to your poolside outfit. Speaking of flair, be prepared to take your nightclub style to the beach, because glitz and glam are taking over the day. High fashion looks like shiny and metallic fabrics are hot this summer and will keep you fashionable as you catch some rays. Adding a little fringe to your shiny swimwear will add some reflection, dimension, and fun as you sip something fruity.

8

| APRIL GLO 2022 |

Looking for something different and alluring but not feeling a metallic look? Cut out patterns on swimsuits are also popular this year and will give your bathing suit a uniqueness that stands out from the crowd. Look for something with cut out sides or a cut out back if you want to flaunt your flirty style. Just remember to use sunscreen on the extra exposed skin. All tied up? Well, you could be with a bathing suit that ties around your midsection instead of just at the neck, creating a fun and distinctive look. This trend is great for all body types because the suits are more adjustable than other styles, making it easy to find something that fits you perfectly.

Ribbed swimwear is functional and fashionable and stretches with your body to help meet your body where it’s at. It is great if you’re needing some extra room or if you are someone who prefers being athletic at the beach as opposed to just catching some rays. Ruched swimwear is also a great choice, especially if you have some parts you want to take attention away from (but seriously girl, you’re beautiful no matter what!). Whether you go with a one piece or a two piece, there are plenty of options this season for flattering and fashionable swimwear. Regardless of what style you go with, I think we can all agree that this summer we’re all ready to enjoy a little rest and relaxation. a

Below theSurface Laser Skin Resurfacing can turn back the hands of time

By Julie Young

They say beauty is only skin deep, but even if that’s true, shouldn’t that skin look its best? With laser skin resurfacing, it can! Laser skin resurfacing is a proven method to minimize blemishes, lines, and wrinkles to rejuvenate and refresh the epidermis. There are numerous options to choose from; multiple treatments and additional products may be required to give you the best result, and prices vary, but if you are looking to spring into the season with a brand new you, it may be worth looking into. Some spas use an ablative laser like CO2, which is a more invasive procedure that destroys the top layer of the skin and offers impressive and immediate results. However, more common is the Intense Pulse Light (IPL) technique that can give you the same result over time.

“IPL is technically a multi-wavelength light, not a laser,” said Amy Ramos, a licensed aesthetician at Belle Sante Med Spa. “The treatments are less painful than an ablative laser and have no downtime. IPL is a fantastic tool for refreshing the skin for a smoother, tighter, and more evenly pigmented appearance” Aspire Plastic Surgery offers several non-surgical laser options for great looking skin, including Halo Laser resurfacing, which combines deep thermal remodeling with epidermal renewal, which targets the damage you can (and can’t) see. They also offer Profractional Laser, which penetrates deep into the skin, but does not have as much heat damage to the surrounding tissue. Lauren Tosland, marketing director and office administrative lead for Aspire, says this combination allows for effective collagen remodeling and is for anyone looking to reduce the appearance of skin impurities and achieve a younger, healthier complexion. “After any laser skin resurfacing treatment, it is imperative to protect your skin, apply sunscreen and use any skincare product recommended by your provider to ensure the best recovery possible,” she said. Plastic Surgery Innovations offers the Cutera Pearl procedure, an IPL treatment that is often used in conjunction with other services, such as the Laser Genesis or the Titan, as well as fillers or

10

| APRIL GLO 2022 |

Botox. For many patients, laser skin resurfacing feels like a series of brief pinches or like a rubber band being snapped against the skin, and they can resume their normal activities immediately following a service. However, they will have three-to-four days of “social” downtime. “I have had this,” said Lori Mlarker RN, practice administrator and patient care coordinator at Plastic Surgery Innovations. “It feels a bit like a sunburn, and in the first day or two you will turn red and peel, but very quickly, you will go back to pink. If you have it done on a Friday, then by Tuesday you will be presentable, but you can’t put on any makeup while you are peeling.” Tosland said laser treatments range from $500$2,000, with additional fees for add-on services. However, the best way for a client to determine which treatment is best for them is to speak with a reputable physician, provider, or aesthetician. “They can do an in-depth skin analysis and determine a customized treatment plan that’s right for you,” she said. a photos: shutterstock.com

Big Sister of the year Kim Carpenter has been married to Big Brother of the year Brian Ternet for six years. Born and raised in Ohio, Carpenter lived in Florida before moving to Fort Wayne to be closer to her family. Here she met Ternet, rescued a very vocal pup named Max, who is in complete control of the treat distribution in their home, and the rest was history. Carpenter remembers her start with Big Brothers Big Sisters. The lunch buddy program sparked her interest because it required only one hour a week. She was matched quickly and began forming a relationship with an active third grader. “We spent her lunch hour playing games, completing school assignments, and forming a friendship that would eventually take us to a community-based match when she aged out of the lunch buddy program,” she explained. She continued making memories at BBBS, but her most memorable moment was in 2019 when their current match got up on stage at the BBBS Women’s Champagne Brunch to walk in the fashion show. “He was a shy young man, who was not so excited to meet us on day one,” she remembered. “He was comfortable with his mom and enjoyed staying home and out of the spotlight. He strutted his stuff in front of 800+ attendees, with a showstopper of him pointing at someone in the audience and signing, ‘Call me!’ The crowd went wild! I still get chills remembering how confident he looked coming off stage, and that he trusted us to push him out of his comfort zone.” Carpenter applauded the many philanthropic leaders who are paving the way and inspiring others and thanked them for making our communities better. She serves on the board for Brightpoint, a mission that includes all and reaches across 15 counties. “To be a part of an organization that can run so efficiently, while impacting so many is truly a gift,” she continued. Her efforts also include raising funds and awareness for Ronald McDonald House Charities and Midwest Boston Terrier Rescue. “I am happy to call Fort Wayne my home,” Carpenter confirmed. “While the advancements of the arts, restaurants (I should include eating as a hobby), downtown development, and outdoor activities give me something to do, it is the people that keep me here. There is truly something special about people from the Midwest.” a 12

BRIAN TERNET

Banker Brian Ternet knows about investing in your financial future, but he shows how to invest in our community’s future. From enriching lives with fine arts to rescuing furry companions, Ternet pours his heart and soul into helping the citizens of Fort Wayne. Though some of his efforts are behind the scenes, he was recently recognized as one half of the “Big Couple of the Year” for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS). Ternet’s wife, Kim, was already involved with BBBS when she suggested they become a “Big Couple.” He jumped at the opportunity and has enjoyed so many moments with the organization. The most rewarding moment was seeing their “Little” blossom. “He has grown into a really fine young man, has several ideas on what he wants to do after high school, and is beginning to ask us questions that show he’s preparing for whatever comes next,” Ternet explained. “While his parents deserve all the credit for this, I hope Kim and I have provided a bit of outside support and influence that has helped him consider all the possibilities that exist in our world today.” The Big Brother is also a substantial animal supporter, devastated to lose their wonderful dog Pete just as the pandemic shut down the world. He and his wife decided the best way to honor her (yes, Pete was a girl) memory is to help other Boston Terriers find loving homes, so they volunteer with a Boston Terrier rescue. Now they have rescued a Border Collie, Max, from an unfortunate situation. “Her personality has done a complete 180 degree turn, and it gives me a great deal of joy to know she’ll finish her ride surrounded by love,” Ternet beamed. “Please consider adopting your next pet! There are rescues for every breed you can imagine, and you’ll be giving a traumatized animal a new lease on life.” “I have a very deep-seated belief that we are obligated to give back to our communities, in whatever capacity that may mean for a person,” explained Ternet. He has worked with several organizations: Erin’s House for Grieving Children, Turnstone, Brightpoint, Fort Wayne Civic Theatre, and Arts United. Proof that there is a connection between happiness and selfless acts, Ternet mused, “I love my life and the people that surround me.” a

Caitlin Dostal is a local young entrepreneur with a vision and work ethic far beyond her nineteen years. She shared with us her high school experience at New Tech academy, youth leadership with Pave the Path, and opening her own business, Deadstock Vintage. Dostal said her time as a student at New Tech Academy provided her with a unique learning experience with a project-based curriculum. “We had a project where we redesigned the entire downtown Fort Wayne to make it more accessible and desirable for families who live in the suburban areas surrounding the city,” she said. “Most of the time, our project final involved a presentation of some sort. Oral communication was a massive part of our grading scale, along with collaboration, as every project was a group project. I think this really encouraged students who attended New Tech to be ready for the ‘adult work world,’ because most schools don’t focus on real life skills like collaboration and oral communication.”

Dostal also became involved in Pave the Path, an organization founded by Jeff Roberts to seek out students with leadership potential and help them learn what their own brand is. “I was invited by JRob (the name all of Robert’s students refer to him as) to join Pave the Path the first year it was created,” she said. “I always knew I was a leader, as that was the position I took in most group projects. However, Pave the Path not only helped me to become the leader I am today, it also taught me to learn who I am and how I want to represent myself. Most importantly, it taught me that every good leader must learn to be a good follower too. I will always be grateful for this group, and the connections and people it has brought into my life. I now wear my accomplishments, failures, and my story on my sleeve like a medal. I have learned that I Am My Brand, and I should be thankful for everything that has shaped me into the person I am today. I hope to always be a part of this program, to further influence young leaders as JRob did for me.” Success is subjective, explained Dostal. “Do I believe I am a successful entrepreneur? Yes. Do I believe I have a long road of experiences, accomplishments, failures, and learning ahead of me still? Absolutely. In the four months it took my boyfriend Isaac and I to start Deadstock Vintage, I worked the hardest I ever have, while being the most stressed I have ever been. I advise young women, and men, to just do what makes them happy. Be Your Brand and express yourself. Put your trust and respect into people who earn it; your time is precious. And most importantly, no dream or goal is impossible. Go against the norm and just be you. Network and keep learning and improving yourself, because no one can do it but you. Although our world seems hard to change when you are just one person, it starts with planting your seed and watering it more and more until one day you can sit back and watch it blossom.”

Caitlin says her amazing partner, Isaac, inspired her with his ability to sell anything, from vintage clothing, to sneakers, to random odds and ends. He encouraged her in times of self-doubt. “ I couldn’t think of a better person to create Deadstock Vintage with,” she said. “And I couldn’t have done this without him. I also attribute an increase in my work ethic to Morrison Agen, my stepdad, who helped me so much. He taught me the ins and outs of starting Deadstock, while providing constant reassurance when things got rough, which they did. We share our location at 3019 Broadway with him and his business, Welcome Back Records. After owning Neat Neat Neat Records for 10 years, there wasn’t a better person to be our business mentor.” She says her biggest role model is her mom, Danielle Andersen. “I could write a book about everything she has done to shape who I am and what an example for my five sisters and me she has set. I was taught from a young age that vulnerability is powerful, which is a privilege not many young girls get growing up. I can’t help but feel privileged to have a mother who has always encouraged me to be me. I am becoming the woman I want to be, and hopefully one day I will become a mother like her.” a

It’s clear that Jackie Hook of High Point Ready has a spirit of innovation. She is the brains behind the only subscription box on the market for the all-around horse and rider. The goal is to bring customers quality products each month that give them more time to ride and bring more confidence to reach showing goals. “We also offer award boxes that can be customized to meet your budget for horse shows of any size,” she added. That special touch is exactly what High Point Ready is about.

Hook’s enthusiasm for the business is no doubt another contributing factor to her success. She enjoys handpicking items for the boxes. She also derives joy from other elements.

From leg protection and recovery products to quality leather tack and wellness products, your High Point Ready box has you covered from head to toe,” Hook said.

“I love that it allows me to stay involved in the horse show industry even when I don’t currently have a horse to show,” she said. “I enjoy that it helps keep me connected with horse friends across the county.”

Speaking of connections, Vanessa Hayden is all about working with children on the autism spectrum through her business Partly Whimsical LLC, founded in November 2020. Partly Whimsical helps parents/caregivers of children with autism accomplish greater learning outcomes by creating unique and safer spaces — literally. Hayden is passionate about creating home spaces that are safer, fun, and uniquely tailored to meet the therapeutic needs of children on the Autism spectrum. She is devoted to helping children with autism thrive in their space, be themselves and flourish! “The interior or exterior space is custom-made according to the needs of the child and their occupational therapist [if they are in an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) center],” she said. “Because every child is different, their space should be different to accommodate any specific needs.” With more than 20 years of experience, Hayden herself is acutely aware of how the needs of individuals on the autism spectrum are different and that serves her well. “When I enter a child’s home or space, I am coming with experience, education, and passion,” she said. “This is not just a job for me, it is a mission!” | APRIL GLO 2022 |

But Humphrey isn’t solely focused on turning a profit — she’s also a role model. “What I enjoy most about my business is being able to provide products to young girls and women that help to enhance their beauty on the outside, as well as on the inside,” she said. “In addition to that, I enjoy being able to be a role model for other little brown girls to look up to and see that anything is possible when you believe.”

Leaha Meinika shares that can-do spirit. The founder of Roy G. Biv Creative Space — an acronym for the rainbow spectrum — decided to start the business in Columbia City in the fall of 2019. She and her team moved quickly and after a pandemic-related delay, they were able to open the doors in May 2020. It is a studio that provides customers a variety of ways to get their creative juices flowing, including guided canvas, fiber arts, drawing lessons, sand art, ceramic paining, sensory art and much more. FEATURE | On Her Nightstand

On Her Nightstand By Wendy Stein

What are you currently reading? “The House in the Cerulean Sea” by TJ Klune. It’s a fantasy novel about a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. Basically, he goes to different orphanages for children who have magical powers or are a different species all together and confirms they are being taken care of and happy. He is assigned to a house on an island with the most extreme cases of magical children he has ever encountered. I started this book knowing nothing about the story; I only knew that a close friend loved it so I wanted to try. At this point, I am enjoying it more than I expected. Memoirs and thrillers are my normal book genres, so this fantasy is definitely something new for me. What’s your favorite book of all time? “A Little Life” by Hanya Yanagihara. It’s focused on four college roommates and where life takes them after school. The book centers on Jude and dives into his harrowing past. It is the most painful and at the same time beautiful book I’ve ever read. I couldn’t put it down, and I sobbed when it was over.

Chelsey Shilling is a 35-year-old stayat-home mom to two girls. Originally from Kendallville, she has lived in Fort Wayne for 12 years. Chelsey graduated from Tri State University in 2007. She enjoys volunteer work, crocheting, reading, and activism.

As a child it was “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. I read it in high school and was so drawn to the emotions of the characters. Books I had read before all seemed very immature and superficial to me after reading it. It was the first “grown up” book I actually wanted to read again. Is there a book that everyone loves but you secretly hate? Or vice versa? A book I love that lots of people love to hate would be the “Twilight” series! I read them in college and was captivated. They are easy to read and the words helped me draw a beautiful image in my mind. I have read them all a few times and even own them (shamefully). Where do you stand on real books versus e-books? I’m a big fan of real books. I like to hold them in my hand; I adore the way an old book smells, and I feel like I focus better when there are words right in front of me. I’ve tried audiobooks but I didn’t pay as much attention as I would have liked. E-readers have never even been an option for me. I guess I’m old fashioned. a

FEATURE | We Love Your Style

e l y t S r u o Y e v o L We CHEYENNE MCDANIEL

By Amber Bouthot

Each month, we highlight someone whose style we admire. If you know someone we should consider featuring, email ambouthot@the-papers.com. This month, it’s Cheyenne McDaniel, a marketing professional for a water and wastewater engineering firm and a mixed media artist. Her work has even graced the cover of glo! She participates in several art shows and collectives throughout the year. She loves putting on pop-up shows at local spots around downtown. You can find her artwork on instagram @cheyennemcdaniel_. Cheyenne is a dog mom of two, Stella and Gilfoyle. She and her husband, Ryan, love to walk their dogs on the weekends and take them to the patios around town.

How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as a rich, vintage kind of style. At least that is what I try to go for. I am not a fan of traditional whites, beiges and taupes. I go for the opposite. I love bold, dark, rich colors. I love accents of gold and bronze everywhere. Tell us a little about each of the areas you chose to highlight. Why did you choose them? What makes them your faves? I really wanted to highlight my dining room. When you walk through our front door, you immediately see the arch that connects our living room to our dining room. I wanted our round dining room table to accent the archway shape. I wanted the artwork in the dining room and living room to accent each other, so I placed my paintings within view when you walk through the front door. The dark colors of the ram painting I tried to tie into the dark wall colors of my dining room. The burnt orange portrait in my dining room ties into the burnt orange terracotta color of my living room walls. Those were intentionally placed there. The chandelier in my dining room is one of the things I love most in my house. It was already installed when we bought the house. I wanted that to be the center of attention when you walk in. The chandelier gives off a yellow ambiance too at night and I love dark, dim rooms. That’s why I chose the black wall colors to accent that dim, romantic look. When you think of your home, what’s the feeling you hope your family and visitors have?

26

| APRIL GLO 2022 |

I hope when people walk through my house they are shocked with the bold colors and décor. I want people to be taken back with the untraditional colors.

What’s your favorite color? My favorite colors are burnt sienna orange and black. I love gold as an accent color. a

Entrepreneurship is growing like never before. Gone are the days when the only path to success began with good grades and a wide range of extracurricular activities in high school, leading to a great college experience and multiple job leads upon graduation.

Today, more youth are trading four years of impressive college credentials (and the price tag that goes with them) for the chance to start their own business, sometimes before they even finish high school. In fact, research shows that freelance gigs, contract work, and self-employment are becoming highly popular choices for the American worker. Contrary to popular opinion, those entrepreneurs aren’t necessarily born with any special “risk taking” genes. Instead, most young entrepreneurs credit the support they received from their parents as the key factor in their success. Building an entrepreneurial spirit in children goes way beyond buying Dixie cups and lemonade for the occasional sidewalk stand. Want to help your kids gain the confidence they’ll need to become successful entrepreneurs? Here are five ways to create an environment that fosters the creativity, innovation, and determination they’ll need to succeed. 28

| APRIL GLO 2022 |

Tip #1 Make Sure All Ideas Count

One characteristic that entrepreneurs share is an open mind. Being willing to consider all ideas and evaluate their potential implementation is a skill you can begin cultivating now. Encourage your children to explore new interests, and make sure they know you support them and their ideas, no matter how crazy they might sound.

Tip #4 Foster Independence

Instead of “overhelping” with homework or buying all the equipment they’ll need to implement their ideas, encourage your children to find ways to fund their passions on their own. Helping them think through their available resources, even as young children, will build the sense of independence and confidence they’ll need later.

Tip #2 Celebrate Failure

One of the best teachers in life is failure, and entrepreneurs must be willing to learn from their mistakes if they are ever going to succeed. Building, developing, testing, and rebuilding ideas and products is a key component to the entrepreneurial spirit. Helping kids see failure as a learning opportunity will build the base for their future achievement.

Tip #3 Develop Diversity

Listening to a variety of perspectives and working as a team are essential skills for every entrepreneur. Creating opportunities for your children to interact with a wide variety of people and encouraging them to appreciate team members are two ways you can help your kids embrace diversity and value others’ ideas and opinions at least as much as they value their own.

Tip #5 Be Their Biggest Fan

Ultimately, just knowing they have a supportive parent in their corner, one who listens to their ideas and who helps them find creative solutions to problems, can be all it takes for young entrepreneurs to launch out on their own.

No matter which career path your children choose, helping them develop an entrepreneurial spirit now will build the base for the confidence and expertise that can propel them to reach their dreams. a

Financial Advice FOR ENTREPRENUERS By Lauren Caggiano

Entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint of heart. It takes guts and vision to blaze one’s own trail. And the best way to do this is with financial health and security in mind if you ask Carrie Lamb, a financial advisor with Edward Jones. That means being mindful of common mistakes that can cost you time and money. “Two things come to mind right away,” she said. “The first is cashing in a 401(k) or other retirement accounts to fund an entrepreneurial endeavor. If you are under 59 ½ years old, that cash out will cost a 10% penalty and income taxes at your current tax bracket. A business loan will have a far lesser effective interest rate. The second thing I see is not preparing for marketing costs. Everyone thinks they only need word of mouth, family, or friends to get going. But you really should figure out who your target market is, find out where you can find them, and then how much it will cost to promote to them there.” Speaking of costs, there can be consequences to believing certain financial myths. Lamb challenges the adage, “fake it ‘til you make it.” She advises to not buy stuff to appear more successful. In her words, “I’ve seen people buy cars, watches, and clothes on credit cards to appear the part 30

| APRIL GLO 2022 |

of successful business owner. It’s better to save your credit for business expenses and buy the stuff later when you’re actually successful…if you really need the stuff.” Successful people also know that it’s important to get their financial house in order. For example, Lamb recommends entrepreneurs set up their entity as either an S-Corp or an LLC. This will require a lawyer, but it protects your personal assets if anyone ever sues the business. On the planning side of things, Lamb reminds clients to save for a rainy day. Her advice: “Set up a retirement plan for the business-a SEP, SIMPLE, or 401(k). You’ll need a financial advisor for this, but it will help you save for your retirement before you think you’re ready. It may also provide some tax benefits for the business.” On the note of benefits, Lamb is keen on being proactive. “Have an emergency savings plan for yourself and the business,” she said.

Business owners should ask themselves the following questions when tackling an emergency fund: How long will it take before you can pay yourself? Do you have enough set aside to cover the bills until that day? Think mortgage/rent, utilities, food, car payment and gas, insurance (home, car, health). And how much is enough? “It can be harder to figure out how much to set aside for a business because it’ll depend on the type of business,” she said. “If you’re not sure, a financial advisor can be a great resource. It can seem overwhelming, so ask for help when you need it.” There are other resources, too, beyond the traditional venues. “Fort Wayne has so many resources for entrepreneurs — from the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center to the many foundations in the area to the Women’s Bureau to the “Own Your Success” (group) on Facebook,” she said. “If you aren’t aware of these, just start asking.” a

GO GREEN! By Bethany Beebe

As the outside transforms from the drab tones of Winter to Spring’s verdant shades, so too can our interior spaces. The way those spaces are decorated sends a message to the occupant.

“The color green is well known for its calming and restorative effects,” said Candice Munson of Flourish and Flounce. “This is incredibly important for a home, as it not only creates a welcoming, warm space for your guests, but it also gives you a sense of comfort and abundance in your home from day to day.” Lucky for us and our spaces, there are many shades of green and options for its inclusion. The Spruce reports that the trend of using the color is being seen in both paint colors and décor items, going as far as to call green a neutral tone. Munson said, “If you want to go bold, then you can paint the whole room a dark green, including the trim, the ceiling, and even the fireplace. This is a very ‘on trend’ style right now, but if you aren’t ready to make that big of a plunge, then adding subtle green elements to your room is a great way to refresh your space.” She went on to suggest throw pillows, a bud vase of greenery, a potted plant, or some eucalyptus to add color and texture. Just like real estate, the location can make all the difference. Start small and then move up in size and prominence, should you like the results. Places like bathrooms are ideal, smaller projects. Whether bold or more reserved, Munson contends the color is universal. “I think,” she said, “all styles benefit from green. If you are a minimalist, adding a small potted plant will add that subtle touch. If you love modern, then go bold with a green monochromatic room. For glamorous, add an emerald green, velvet chair! For my modern farmhouse lovers, add some eucalyptus to a dough bowl. There is truly something for anyone with the color green.”

The hue of green selected depends largely on the message one hopes to convey. For example, Sherwin-William’s color of the year, Evergreen Fog, could make a space feel spa-like (1). “Adding a yellow green (lime green) to a space can actually create a harshness and brassiness that can take away from the décor,” Munson suggests. “Having a pop of color is a great thing, but overall you want the space to live harmoniously.” If you have a special occasion on tap, green can be a great addition. Munson suggested olive green taper candles could

KITCHEN AND BATHROOM EDITION Out with the old; In with the new! By Jennie Renner

Are you thinking of remodeling your kitchen or bathroom? You’re not alone. “The demand for kitchen and bath remodeling is off the charts,” said Kevin Hunter, owner of Windows, Doors & More. As we spent more time in our homes over the last two years, many of us realized that we weren’t happy with what we saw. If you are among those who are looking to update your living spaces, Hunter has some tips for you. Define your design preferences In the early stages of your planning, begin by gathering pictures of designs and features that you are interested in for your remodel. To learn about the latest trends, visit open houses, leaf through home magazines, and browse online. Pinterest is a great way to collect your ideas and begin to build your “wish book.” You can also visit showrooms at local stores to view room vignettes, collect brochures, and pick up samples. Spend some time learning what you like so you’ll be ready for the next step. Find a reputable company or contractor Once you have settled on what you want, you need to find a company or contractor to do the work. The business that you choose should be able to lay out your project so you can see what it will look like in your space. They may even be able to create a 3-D image for you. Before you sign a contract or put any money down, it’s important that you trust the company and feel comfortable with your choice. “If you don’t feel comfortable before the project begins, it typically does not get better,” warned Hunter. Determine the timeline The next step is to determine the timeline for your project. For a complete room remodel, Hunter said that most companies are currently planning at least six months out. (So if you want a new kitchen by Thanksgiving, start now!) Easy projects, like replacing a countertop or lighting fixtures, shouldn’t take quite as long - maybe three months or less. Projects are taking a long time because the companies that make the products that are needed for remodeling are continuing to have labor and supply issues. “Getting materials delivered is taking a lot longer these days,” 38

said Hunter. “Nothing is going as quickly as it once did, and it doesn’t look like we are going to see that change anytime soon.” While it can be easy to get excited about updating your space, you also need to be realistic about the timeline and be prepared for the upheaval. Hunter warned that the reality of having your home torn up can wear on you. “I would suggest that couples be honest with one another,” he advised. “Everybody thinks that they can live through anything… but the two happiest days for most customers are the day we start the job and the day that we finish it.” Hunter said the number one thing you need to have as you begin your remodeling project is patience. a

HOME LIVING | How To

equip yourHome By Cathy Shouse

Office

Home is where the heart is, and it’s becoming where the office is, too. Getting expert advice on your home office set-up can maximize your productivity, as well as add comfort.

Janet Roe, president and founder of One Eleven Design, shared her expertise and insights. An interior designer, Roe entered the furniture industry in 1987. One Eleven Design, in its 21st year, provides interior design services and furnishings for office, education, healthcare, and home spaces.

If a person will be working more from home, Q what are the next steps?

Work from home (WFH) spaces should be treated just like spaces found in traditional offices. To best support the work and technology (computer(s), multiple monitors, printers, keyboards, video conferencing, cables and cords, etc.), your workspace should have ample surface space, a supportive chair, great lighting, cable management, appropriate storage, and organizational tools. Acoustical concerns, security, and privacy should also be considered if others share the home. Once a room or space within your home is found, select furniture pieces that will safely support comfortable and focused work. The more adjustments the better on both a chair and the desk, to accommodate a person’s height and eye sight and how the technology is supported.

Are there must-haves for a home office, Q maybe a spare chair for visitors?

People’s workstyles vary greatly depending on many factors: type of work, age, amount and size of documents used, collaboration with others, etc. WFH offices can still demonstrate personality, but comfort and function should be considered. With offices and workstations decreasing in size due to less paper storage and smaller technology, footprint requirements are averaging 5’x6’.

Q Are there purchases to make?

Many companies are providing stipends to support an ergonomic home office for the worker’s health and safety. We recommend investing first in a quality task chair, especially if sitting for more than 2 hours, so that the chair can be adjusted to your body type and to the work surface height. Adjustable arms for monitors and laptops are great for flexibility and to free up surface space. Height adjustable desks are also a great way to keep moving throughout the day, standing for periods of time.

40

| APRIL GLO 2022 |

Q What mistakes do you commonly see?

We want people to understand the importance of a well-designed work station, both at home and the office. Kitchen chairs and dining room tables are typically not appropriate due to fixed heights, minimal or no cushion, and no arm or back support. Working long periods at a surface that is too tall and chairs that have no cushion can affect blood flow to hands and legs and strain on eyes and muscles of the neck and back. Don’t select furniture solely by look. Ask to “test drive” before buying as an ergonomic chair, as they can start at $500.

Q Any last tips?

Be comfortable and supported and keep moving! The saying, “Sitting is the new smoking” is real. Sedentary lifestyles increase your risk of chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. a

HOME LIVING | Do It Yourself

Every month, we highlight do-it-yourself projects from our readers. Do you want to see your project featured in our magazine? Email ambouthot@the-papers.com.

Karen’s Mural

This month’s Reader DIY project comes from Karen. She and her sister bought a house together, and they’ve been transforming it into a colorful sanctuary for their work and creativity. This month’s column highlights a mural Karen painted in her office.

Befores Afters

What was your inspiration for the project? The designs and colors were inspired by the mountains and fields of flowers in Southern Oregon, where I moved from a year ago. I miss them! Indiana has its own kind of beauty, but Southern Oregon sites like Crater Lake, the Table Rocks, the Rogue River, Mt. Mcloughlin, and the Pacific Crest Trail, to name only a few... well, they are incredibly beautiful and inspirational. That said, I started with the birch tree wall decals, which I discovered on Amazon and thought would be a totally cool way to bring a bit-o-nature inside. They were fine, for a while, but when I’d look at the wall, it felt like something was missing. Then an Oregon friend sent me a gorgeous photo of the mountains in Prospect at sunset and I had an “oh yeah” moment. The colors, shapes, and designs in that photo inspired me into action. How long did it take from start to finish? About three weeks. After I paint a section, I need to live with it a bit before I move on. Do I like that shape, that color, that design? I change colors if they don’t feel right, and I did so with this mural, from oranges and reds to the blues and purples. I’m not afraid to repaint and redo. Also, I do a bit of “Ta-da! I’m done,” then the next day I wake up and look at it and say, “Oh crud, not done yet.” 44

| APRIL GLO 2022 |

Was it easier or harder than you anticipated? It’s a process. I never really know what I’m going to paint when I start a project. I just have a vague—and I do mean vague—idea. As I go along something says to me, “This goes here,” and “That goes there,” and, basically, I just do what I’m told. Also, I get anxious with a project until I get to a certain point and I never know where that point is until I get there, and until then there’s a bit of, “What was I thinking?” and “What the heck am I doing?” However, eventually I get into a flow and it pours out of me as if it were just waiting to come out. If that doesn’t happen, I have been known to completely paint over an entire mural. If it’s not meant to be it has got to go! Now, the really hard part of this project was that I needed to lie on the floor on my side with my arm raised up to paint the detailed stuff on the bottom of the wall, and that was a bit tough on this ole bod. Getting up and down off the floor isn’t as casual (or graceful) a move as it once was.

What did you like best about the undertaking? Ahhhh, yes, the sweet spot where I’m not thinking about what I’m doing, it’s just happening. And, of course, when I’m finished and looking at it makes me smile. It has to make me smile. If it doesn’t, it’s not done (or it has to go away). a
