C“asey was my first crush.
His bowl-cut hair was blonde. His temperament was sweet. And he smiled at me a lot. Yep, Casey-from-k indergar ten was dreamy to this fellow classmate, Sue Crushes. We’ve all had them.
Whether it was the first boy who caught your eye or if it was Bo or Luke Duke (c’mon, I’m not the only one), young crushes ignite a pitter-patter in the chest.
They also tend to heighten awareness, inspire giggles and evoke excitement.
So, why not dedicate an entire issue of glo to such a concept? We thought it was a good idea, too
In the wine industr y, September is k nown as crush month So, let ’s have some fun with the word play

Dr Emmar y Butler is an OB/Gyn with Women’s Health Advantage, where she has prac ticed for the last year. A 2003 valedic torian from Nor th Side High School ( their first African-American valedic torian), Butler went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude with honors in chemistr y from Xavier Universit y of Louisiana As the youngest of a ver y suppor tive family teaching the impor tance of hard work, Butler is grateful for the fac t that her family encouraged and challenged her growing up.
“I t has made me mentally, emotionally and physically strong, ” she said. “ These qualities are definitely needed to overcome the obstacles faced during the pursuit to medicine. My family also allowed me to dream and never talked me out of my ambitions I wish students these days received similar reassurance to tr y new things So many of them are talked out of their dreams or are afraid to tr y something new ”
As a dedicated young doc tor, Butler has overcome various obstacles in her career “So far I haven't faced anything too serious, but at times, I am mistaken for a nurse or being too young to be a doc tor, ” she said “As a result, I’ve been asked ‘when will I see the doc tor?’ after a consult ”
During the disaster of Hurricane K atrina, Butler was a junior at Xavier University and was evacuated “I t was not the first time that we had evacuated due to a hurricane, ” she said “However, K atrina was the first storm that ac tually damaged the city enough to close our school In years prior, there was just heavy rain ”
Butler finds her work at Women’s Health Advantage satisfying and fulfilling “I enjoy tak ing care of women because as a woman I relate to them well, ” she said “I really enjoy delivering babies bringing life into the world is an indescribable feeling I t is one of the most precious moments for families and I'm honored to be a par t of it ”

In 2016, Butler launched the Emmar y Butler Foundation, which focuses on scholarships and mentoring for local students In just one year, she was able to award over $4,000 in gifts and scholarships “I am ver y grateful for my sponsors who made 2016-17 a success and hope to do bigger and better things for students this school year!”

glow GIRL glow GIRL
Tough in a Gentle Way
Nor well High School freshman Paige Cox of Mark le prac tices ‘the gentle way ’ and would like other teens to join her.
‘ The gentle way ’ refers to the discipline of Judo, a spor t created in the late 19th centur y. “Judo focuses more on tak ing down opponents through balance and technique rather than strength," she said.
While Judo might sound ancient, it is a vital par t of Cox ’s life in the 21st centur y. Several days a week she prac tices at her dojo ( Judo school) in Por tland called Judan Judo. Many weekends she, parents Jill and Chris, and younger brother Cody, who has been involved with Judo since age 6, drive to tournaments throughout the M idwest, Texas, Florida and New York
Cox, 14, has played team spor ts like basketball, but prefers Judo. “ When I win on the mat, it is my win, ” she said. Yet she sees Judo as a community spor t. “Ever yone in the Judo community develops into a family, ” she said “Opponents prac tice against each other and teach ways for the other person to improve ”
Cox ’s love for Judo has even ex tended around the world as in December 2016 she and her mother, Jill, were invited to Fukuok a, Japan for the Sanix Judo Tournament
Cox brought home awards after competing against teens age 1214 from the U.S., Australia, Hong Kong and Russia, but she is most proud of friends she made. “ We might not have always spoken the same language," she said, “but it was fun communicating in small ways and sharing techniques to improve our Judo ”
Cox did well enough to be invited back to compete again in December 2017. Until then, she continues her effor ts to encourage teens in nor theastern Indiana to get interested in Judo
“I t ’s not a mar tial ar t so k ids will not get hur t," she said. “Judo is a great way for teens to develop fitness and self-confidence.”
Cox admitted to needing confidence when testing to earn increased ranks of belts in Judo. Currently, Cox has a half blue, half purple belt and has been promoted three times. “I t was intimidating the first time I competed for my rank," she said, “but as my confidence was raised, I became less ner vous ”
Cox is far from obtaining a black belt, but she is not in a hurr y. “I k now what it means to have a black belt and I k now I need to learn more," she said. “I’ll k now when I’m ready.” a

This family-owned establishment in Ashley is k nown for its handcrafted and small batch wines and constant experimentation “ This is great for the consumers because they will most likely find something they haven't tried before, ever y time they visit, ” said Brandy Lock har t, tasting room manager.
Lock har t said while you don’t need a special occasion to drink wine, girlfriend weekends are a way for women to connec t on a whole other level, over a bottle or two “Indiana wineries make great wine with a wide range of varietals so ever yone should be able to find something they will love, ” she said.
S atek Winer y, Fremont, 260.495.9463, satekwiner y.com

Byler Lane Winer y in Auburn is a place for busy women to get away and find some peace and quiet. Unlike some other wineries, they don't allow children. “ We wanted our winer y to be a place for adults, ” said Rachel Byler, manager/co-owner. “ We want couples to come here for date night, girlfriends to come here for a ‘mom’s night out ’ etc.” And, it ’s never the same place twice either, as their wine list changes from month to month, offering a variety of dr ys, semi-sweets a

Fall Weddings
By Shannon Rooney
Fall is a beautiful season for weddings. From sunflowers to autumnal color palettes to special venues there are so many elements you can use to create a seasonal wedding that ’s really says “you.”
If you’re tying the k not this fall or nex t we’ve got some great resources for your ceremony and reception The For t Wayne area is home to great venues and specialty shops that can make your special day truly unique.
Color Coordination
When we think fall weddings, we tend to think of rich browns, maroon and rust, the colors of autumn leaves This palette is always a popular choice, but why not incorporate some of this year ’s par ticular favorites? Pair soft colors with richer hues like berr y red, dove gray and a blush pink Or maroon, navy and cream Pull from the colors of the season and you can’t go wrong
If you need inspiration, let your flower arrangements guide you. A mix of dried and live flowers reflec ts the spirit of the season and in choosing your favorites, you can create a color palette to suit your entire event Because florals are seasonal, make sure to meet with your florist early on in the planning process Our local florists, such as Armstrong Flowers or Cottage Flowers, can help you identify flowers that will be available in the fall

Reception and Gifts
I t ’s time to cut loose! Take your time planning a reception so you can nail down the details and enjoy your par ty on the day of. “ You only get one chance when you’re getting married, so make a good decision, explore your options, ” said Sara Keltsch, owner of The Monogram Shoppe in For t Wayne The shop offers personalized save-the-date notices, invitations, cake toppers, bridal par ty gifts and other wedding accessories Popular bridal par ty gifts for men include wedding ties and socks, along with bar ware and cigars For the ladies, wedding jewelr y is a popular choice, along with personalized totes, compac t mirrors and flip-flops for the reception
In choosing a venue, consider these fac tors: distance from ceremony venue, caterer and enter tainment coordination, and, of course, size If you have a long guest list, you may have to consider more traditional venues that will hold a lot of people Pay attention to the details: will the venue provide the cake ser vice or will your caterer take care of that? How big is the dance floor and will the venue or the DJ provide the layout?

Food Menus
Choosing a wedding menu begins with nailing down your budget and number of guests Once those are settled, consider style Work with your caterer to create a menu that suits the formality or informality of your wedding That may help you choose between filet mignon and locally raised chicken a la k ing If you’re an adventurous foodie, choose a few items just for you and a few for your guests with more mainstream tastes Consider going with fresh and local, as well as a fall soup like butternut squash, hear ty vegetable or minestrone.
Both style and taste will fac tor into your cake choice Couples are getting more creative with wedding desser ts Popular and innovative choices include a cake for the couple to cut, followed by a cupcake tree or even a variety of donuts for guests.

THE OYSTER BAR
Crush Insanity the
By Barb Sieminsk i
All too soon the calendar denotes falling leaves, football and (shudder) back-to-school time (and for most, it ’s here already) Moms who have happily whiled away the carefree summer hours may be just as crushed as their kids at the relative loss of freedom and sudden return to scheduled academic studies
Probably the hardest thing to get used to again is the early rising time and hec tic shooing k ids out the door toward the big yellow bus that is, after accessorizing k iddos with all necessities: backpacks, lunch money, books, gym bags, permission slips, et al.
Make it easy on yourself, moms How?
Think ahead. Have ever yone selec t their clothes the night before, lay them out, all cleaned and pressed (ok ay, at least folded) A few minutes of prep will give ever yone a few ex tra minutes of sleep in the morning and no last-minute scrambling for the whereabouts of that favorite sweatshir t or pair of pants
Be charged and in charge And don’t forget to make sure that your k ids’ mobile devices or laptops are fully charged, if they use these at school Make sure homework is done Lay out, the night before, also, breakfast items so you’ll be ready to ser ve a hot menu before the morning dash Too, you’ll k now you have enough milk, batter, toast or eggs ahead of time, and it ’ll be easier to get the k iddos out the door.
Door way prep. Have the k ids gather all their paraphernalia by the door so all they need to do is make a quick grab and be on their way in the morning
Don’t freak. Does your k id tell you just before the bus trundles up the road that he needs 25 cupcakes for his class par ty TODAY? Curb the impulse to panic; that ’s what the grocer y or baker y is for Just calmly say you’ll bring them later on in the day and then do it
Broken hear ts + open ears. Is your teen experiencing all the agonies of a first crush and tak ing it out on the whole family? (Kind of reminds you of you at that age when your world consisted of just you-and-him, doesn’t it?) So, forbearance, dear; this too shall pass V iew the circumstance as an exercise in self-control and tolerance Parents are consistent counselors Just listen, ack nowledge and gently direc t
Tricky clocks. Here’s another tip: set clocks 5 minutes fast, and do a just-you morning affirmation to begin your day on the right note
Keep it cool. Avoid shouting, which can escalate into tears and frustration Calm? Did someone say “calm?” Use traditional visualization techniques to crush the impatience of tending three k ids at once in the rushed mornings Call on the serene water falls or the restorative green pastures in your memor y bank to keep your frustrations in check and to remember, “ This too shall pass ”
And when all else including your patience fails and inbred good manners are momentarily crushed, let loose with a swear word or two Then forgive yourself Pour a glass of wine The world will continue revolving and you’ll have a sweet moment of empowering you a

Awake breast surgery:
Getting implants without going
to sleep
By Dr Joseph M Mlak ar, M D , FACS
According to the American Societ y of Plastic Surger y, breast augmentation remained the No 1 surgical cosmetic surger y last year, with over 279,000 repor ted patients in the USA alone. Worldwide, more than 1.3 million women under went breast augmentation with implants in 2015 The population of breast implant surger y for primar y breast augmentation has grown by 31 percent since 2000.
The newest trend shaping the landscape of cosmetic breast surger y is “awake surger y ” Just as it sounds, breast implant placement is per formed without a required general anesthetic. As such, the patient does not need to go fully to sleep, and does not require intubation or breathing assistance. The term “awake surger y ” has been used to attrac t patients who don’t like the loss of control or risk of nausea associated commonly with general anesthesia But “awake surger y“ may be somewhat of a marketing nomenclature, as most patients still receive a sedating agent such as Valium, Ativan or Xanax to allow them to comfor tably “chill” during the injec tions of local anesthetic and subsequent surger y ( The surger y is better described as conscious sedation ) And these benzodiazepine agents have amnestic ff Th i f d ’ b h
Is it safe?
Awake breast surger y under local anesthetic still requires elec trocauter y monitoring and pulse oximetr y monitoring as someone would have under general anesthetic Typically, it is performed at a cer tified surgical center at an office base facility by a fully trained, board cer tified plastic surgeon Breast augmentation surger y is never a time to sk ip on safety. And breast surger y under local anesthetic has proven to be as safe as the same procedure under general anesthesia.
O ver the past 5 years, 318 female patients have undergone primar y breast augmentation with implants at Plastic Surger y Innovations. Our patient satisfac tion sur veys are excellent, and patient outcomes have been outstanding. With Dupont Hospital in prominent view direc tly across the park ing lot from our office, hospitalbased surger y is always an option for any of our patients General anesthesia delivered by a cer tified registered nurse anesthetist or board cer tified anesthesiologist is also available at our office based, surgical suite But most patients still choose awake breast surger y with oral sedation
Why? The cost Having surger y under local anesthetic and sedation can typically save the patient $1,000 or more Since many breast augmentation patients are younger women, many with young families, cost saving is a significant perk of office-based surger y. Hospital surger y or ambulator y surgical centers may add an additional whopping $5,000 to your surgical bill
But is this type of surger y necessar y? No. Never. This is cosmetic surger y. I t ’s desired, but not needed. Husbands (and boyfriends) often say that their wives (or girlfriends) don’t need it. But most guys are ver y suppor tive Women deser ve to feel beautiful Many women who seek breast augmentation surger y with implants want their breast shape back after having babies They just want to ‘feel pretty ’ again
So, if you are woman who is considering breast implant surger y, you may wish to consider awake breast surger y Many women do a

How to Crush On Yourself
Love is not just about finding a good partner. It is also about being a good one. - Unknown
How to Crush On Yourself And Why Self-Love Isn’t
Selfish
Why Self-Love Isn’t Selfish
By Erin Dozois
Ever y day over 2 5 million airline passengers are briefed on the proper procedures one must take in the event of an emergenc y If the cabin’s air pressure is compromised, an ox ygen mask will be deployed to each person on the plane The crew then instruc ts all adult passengers to put on their own masks before helping children with theirs At first glance, this may seem heinously selfish, but it ’s ac tually an effec tive strategy The adults would be rendered useless to help if they were unconscious and therefore are told to secure their own safeties first.
The same idea could be applied to our relationships We are taught that love is selfless, yet we must make ourselves a priority Each person is 50 percent of the relationship whole, after all, and if one par tner isn’t strong enough to carr y half the weight, the other will suffer beneath the added stress
So while it may sound a bit cliché, the truth is no one can really love someone if she doesn’t first learn to love herself Those with poor self-image will oftentimes enter a relationship for acceptance or to fill a void Love then becomes dependenc y with one par tner desperately siphoning her wor th and peace of mind from the other, unable to give anything in return
Sounds k ind of selfish, doesn’t it?
However, a woman who takes care of herself has a lot to offer a mate. She is secure enough to stick it out when things get tough She doesn’t pressure anyone to save her She is emotionally available to her par tner and contributes her strengths to the bond Self-love allows you to give your par tner the best you can be because you k now they deser ve nothing less Here’s how :
1
. Spend time with yourself.
Take some quiet time to examine your thoughts and feelings through meditation, journaling or prayer. Even if it ’s only a few minutes per day, self-reflec tion can relax and reset your mind.
2. Confront your inner demons.
Ever yone has flaws what matters is how you deal with them Don’t let insecurities and anxiety stymie your personal growth Change what you can and don’t sweat what you can’t, remembering that no one is per fec t
3. Heal old wounds.
We are often stuck in the hur ts of the past, either afraid or unable to move on Liberate your broken hear t by allowing yourself to be open about what created your scars I t may hur t for a time, but your grief will abate a little more ever y day.
4. Ask for help.
Healing can be achieved through many different modalities including therapy, suppor t groups, energy work, massage and mind-body programs Trusted family and friends can be invaluable resources There is no shame in seek ing sanity
5. Forgive.
Anyone can pretend that they ’ve moved on and are ok ay, but true inner peace comes with genuine forgiveness of yourself and those who’ve hur t you Grudges and shame are energy suckers save your strength for better things
6. Accept where you are right now.
I t ’s easy to feel over whelmed while examining and undergoing major life changes, so take it slowly. Give yourself permission to live in the present while you’re work ing through the past.
7. Seek the right relationships.
Filter your connec tions Surround yourself with positive influences and be one to others Continue to foster the relationship you have with yourself Remember, you attrac t what you reflec t so shine! a

September:
Ov a r i a n C a n c e r Awareness Month
By Barb Sieminsk i
At the ver y top of former Indiana Gardener and Home Indoor Outdoor Living editor Mar tha Stoelting’s list of all-time favorite people was her dear friend and co-worker Gloria Kay Baumgar tner, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2008.
“Gloria was k ind, she was a listener and maybe the most empathetic person I have ever k nown, ” said Stoelting, a staff writer and columnist for The Papers Incorporated.
“ When she was diagnosed with cancer, her attitude was amazing She was a fighter and at the end, she accepted her fate graciously
“Not only did I work with her at TPI, but when I owned a flower shop, she was a frequent, loyal customer and would stop in to keep me apprised of her fight with the disease ”
In tribute, then, to this wonder ful Syracuse woman friend, loving wife, mother and grandmother who was business manager and treasurer at TPI, where husband Ron is the president and publisher, g lo wishes to obser ve O varian Cancer Awareness Month this September in hopes that other women can k nowledgeably escape the same fate.
Focusing on the charac teristics of the disorder, the risk fac tors which could increase or decrease
a woman’s possibility of getting the cancer, and the selec tion of treatments will give the reader an idea of what lies ahead.
It’s Elusive
This type of cancer is admittedly hard to detec t, par tly because there are no available screenings to help with a diagnosis early enough to begin treatment.
Another reason ovarian cancer is sometimes not sensed until it is in its more severe stages is because it often mimics other lesser conditions such as persistent pelvic pain, bloating, pain during sex, back pain, frequent urination, constipation and gallbladder problems.
Fem
Stat #93 O varian c ancer accounts for approximately 3 percent of c ancers in women.
Risk Factors
The cancer which develops in the ovaries has several risk fac tors, which include genetics; pregnanc y over the age of 35; a histor y of never carr ying a pregnanc y to term; use of fer tility drugs or androgens; a family histor y of ovarian cancer, breast cancer or colorec tal cancer; increasing age; obesity ; a personal histor y of breast cancer; or a k nown genetic mutation I t is impor tant to remember, however, that all women are at risk for this condition, which ranks fifth in female cancer deaths
Survival Rate
Diagnosed and treated early enough, the survival rate is 5 years. According to the National O varian Cancer Coalition (www.ovarian.org), an estimated 1 woman in 75 will develop ovarian cancer in her lifetime The NOCC stresses that a Pap smear does not detec t ovarian cancer
Lowering Your Risk
Some ways in which risks may be lowered are by using oral contraception, breast-feeding and pregnanc y, tubal ligation, hysterec tomy, prophylac tic oophorec tomy and a healthy diet and exercise
Treatment
Diverse treatments include surger y, chemotherapy, various other drugs, radiation therapy and clinical trials Periodic checks of top medical websites such as the Mayo Clinic (www mayoclinic org) will keep one up to date with research and medical advances Tak ing par t in clinical trials may offer new therapy options that are not available to patients in outside settings
Always maintaining vigilance can mean the difference between living and dying
In conclusion, the courageous battle fought by Gloria was superbly ack nowledged by her daughters Criss and Jennifer at the funeral
“One of the best quotes ever used to describe her, ” said Stoelting, “was when they said, ‘If there was music, she was dancing!’
“ That was our Gloria, living life to the fullest ” a

"How do I advocate? I am a poster child for early detec tion. If caught early, the disruption to life is minimal. With 1 in 8 women facing a diagnosis in her lifetime, I pray that each of those have a diagnosis and treatment like mine Through Francine’s Friends speak ing to our Tri K appa group, Pink Out DeK alb County was born, and three years later our effor ts have increased mammograms in our community and we have touched all the communities in our county through sharing education, accessibility and accountability ”

"Sometimes, I can go for weeks without even think ing about my breast cancer journey Honestly, it seems more like a lifetime ago, whereas, when I was first diagnosed, ‘my breast cancer ’ was an ever-present thought in my mind and the minds of my family I am a strong believer in ‘early detec tion saves lives’ and to that end I will continue to be involved with Francine’s Friends and bring awareness to breast cancer and annual screenings ”

"As I reflec t back on my diagnosis and surger y, I honestly have to say there are some days I don’t even think about it! I had an awesome plastic surgeon and my breasts look ver y normal so there really are no scars or reminders. What I do think about is my daughter who is now 40 and my granddaughter who is 12 and how my experience affec ts their future health (I do a lot of preaching!) ” a
