When we visited my parents in Florida last fall, I dug out dozens of home videos on VHS tapes that have been tucked away for decades. I finally convinced my parents to digitize our collection. We used an online service, so we boxed up the tapes, sent them away, and waited—easy peasy (except for the waiting!) The digitized files arrived this month. What a precious gift! We now have hundreds of hours of video footage of our lives preserved in an accessible manner. As I have been reviewing the footage, memories of my childhood have flooded back. Seeing my mom and dad in their younger years now that I am an adult gives me new perspective and appreciation for everything they did for my brother and me. We had a happy childhood, full of fun experiences and lots of love. It’s bittersweet to see and hear my Papa and Nana (my maternal grandparents who passed away in 2010 and 2011). It’s such a joy to be able to “visit” with them but also makes my heart hurt thinking about how much I miss them. They would have been enamored with my daughters. I wish they could have met them and shared in my joy. The timing of receiving these treasures so close to Mother’s Day is not lost on me. What’s even better is, as I write this, my mom is visiting and we have been able to watch the videos together, reminiscing about the past 30+ years. Time goes quickly. We all have a finite amount of it. While Mother’s Day gives us an opportunity to show our love and appreciation for the mom-figures in our lives, let’s remember to be more present every day, telling our loved ones what they mean to us. It takes such little effort to make such an impact. I hope all the mothers—biological moms, adopted moms, stepmoms, honorary moms—have a wonderful Mother’s Day. Enjoy this issue that was designed just for you.

s s e r D e h t o t s e Y y a SBRIDAL PARTY STYLE TRENDS FOR 2022 By Julie Young

No matter if your wedding is formal, funky, traditional, trendy or somewhere in between, there is a style for everyone walking down the aisle! From the spotlight gown and accessories to stunning attendant wear and gorgeous couture for mom, if you are ready to wow those vows, we have the latest looks that will help your party dress for success.

the traditional veil and opting for a birdcage veil, a bridal hood (instead of a cape or train), as well as hat to complement their dress. Elbow length gloves and an evening bag are the perfect accessories that can take the place of a floral arrangement while accenting the overall fashion statement.

Brides Once upon a time, a stunning white dress, veil, and bouquet were the go-to fashions for brides on the big day. And while it remains the most popular choice, “second looks” are becoming more mainstream. Although distinctively bridal, the second look dress is often less cumbersome as the ceremony gown and affords brides a little more flexibility and comfort at the reception. When choosing a second look, consider both the way it flatters your figure, as well as the types of activities you will take part in while wearing it. You can choose something that reflects your main wedding gown or feel free to accent another side of your personality. Anything goes when it comes to a second look dress. Brides are also looking for a twist on tradition in 2022 and are not afraid to incorporate a print or a pop of color on their gown. They are also forgoing 8

Bridesmaids When it comes to the bridal party, designers have developed a wide range of styles that will help your attendants look and feel their best while complementing the bride. It’s best to make sure that your attendants’ outfits match the formality of the main gown, but it’s also important to choose something that flatters their shape and personal style. Modern brides may choose to eschew a bridesmaid dress altogether in favor of a great jumpsuit or embrace the romanticism of another time by embracing Regency (aka Bridgerton) blue. Cottagecore maxi dresses are another choice for a country or whimsical wedding as well as mix-and-

match styles that take all body types and styles into consideration. Color trends run the gamut from neutral to pastels and bold jewel tones, but designers say shades of yellow are going to be one of the biggest trends for 2022, including mustard, canary, lemon, and marigold. Other popular choices include black, as well as white.

One of the largest selections of mother-of-the-bride, mother-of-the-groom and unique formal wear dresses in the area. We also carry better quality sportswear, day dresses, jewelry and accessories.

Whether you opt for everyone to look alike or to play with hems, necklines and more, you can always tie the bridal party together with accessories like jewelry, pashminas, and bouquets.

Mother of the Bride/Groom Mothers of the happy couple will want to make sure they have their standout moment without upstaging the couple. You’ll want to choose an ensemble that flatters your body, complements the theme of the wedding, does not match the bridesmaids (or each other) and above all, is comfortable. (You will be wearing it for approximately 12 hours.)

Experts say it is important to start shopping early to try on a variety of styles and plan for alterations. Sleek and timeless shaping is always a great choice while a fit-and-flair style offers a great slimming look. Elongating details can accent areas you want folks to focus on while a chic high-low hem is a fun and flirty way to announce your arrival. Although you may be one of the hostesses of this event, it is important to check your final choice with the brideto-be prior to purchase so that there aren’t any conflicts. A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event and no matter what your role on the big day, you’ll want to look and feel great. Thanks to this year’s wealth of options, there is something for every style, shape, and personality. a photos: shutterstock.com

Say Goodbye to

Facial Hair By Shelley Galbreath

Whether it is peach fuzz, sideburns, above the top lip or on the chin, unwanted facial hair on women can be embarrassing. Shaving can cause ingrown hairs, dry, itchy, irritated skin, damage the skin, and even stimulate growth. There are other options though.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL Lori Mlaker, Registered Nurse/Patient Health Coordinator/Practice Administrator for Plastic Surgery Innovations, knows firsthand this embarrassment. “I had dark black coarse hairs I would pluck on my chin and had a hairy upper lip,” she said. “Laser hair removal provided results, and I have not plucked for 25 years.” Amy Ramos, Lead Ethician at Belle Sante Med Spa, said there is no reason to feel embarrassed about facial hair when there are ways to control it. Depending on whether removing hair is temporary or semi-permanent, and what color the hair is to begin with, the two most popular methods of removing hair are Laser Hair Reduction (Removal) and Dermaplaning.

Ramos said their laser treatment is referred to as a “reduction” because there may be regrowth due to normal hormonal changes in the body over the course of a person’s life. “A change in hormones often refuels the growth of hair,” she explained. 10

| MAY GLO 2022 |

This method of hair removal is the most cost effective for getting rid of hair long-term. Since a laser cannot detect lighter hair colors, hair must be dark, not gray, blond, or red. “Some see a dramatic decrease in hair growth in as little as six treatments,” said Ramos. “Others need more treatments if hair is coarse. Mlakar agrees: “It’s important to get through enough regular treatments (about 4-6 weeks apart) to eliminate all the hair growth cycles of hair follicles, because if you quit too soon, it won’t be successful.” Lauren Tosland, Marketing Director and Office Administrative Lead at Aspire Plastic Surgery, said, “Hair removal can last several months or even years but does not guarantee permanent removal forever. When hair regrows, it is usually finer and lighter in color. We offer the newest and fastest Laser Hair Removal Device on the market, the Bare HR.” Plastic Surgery Innovations has the Cutera Laser. Mlakar said it can even treat large surfaces like men’s back, under arms, or bikini areas. Individual single treatments vary depending on the body part and surface area, and packages of five treatments can run anywhere from $400 to $2,000.

DERMAPLANING For women who want to temporarily remove all the surface hair (and a superficial layer of dead skin) on the face, dermaplaning is an easy and

economical way to do so. Dermaplaning is done with a scalpel and is painless and effective with smooth, hairless skin lasting 3-4 weeks. Hair grows back in its normal condition, no darker and no coarser than it was before dermaplaning. Some liken it to shaving the face at home, however, this treatment is done by a trained professional observing strict sanitation and precision to eliminate the chance of infection, unlike a home shave. And the finish is smooth around all the curves and contours of the face. For makeup wearers, there is nothing like applying makeup to a silky-smooth skin. The finish is flawless! Dermaplaning is an effective exfoliation suitable for all skin types, ages, and hair color resulting in better product absorption and a beautiful, refined look. Tosland said this treatment is extremely cost-effective ($60) and removes peach fuzz, while exfoliating dead skin. She recommends pairing it with a chemical peel or medical grade facial treatment, such as Diamond Glow or Hydrafacial. Treatments can be scheduled every four to six weeks. a photos: shutterstock.com

Community volunteer and advocate Karen Eller recently shared her methods for making a difference right here in Fort Wayne. Can you tell us the story behind Culture Beyond Compliance? As a reincarnated suffragette, I spent my early professional career asking people for money for causes close to my heart. I went on to merge my professional expertise in fundraising with my personal passion for women’s rights to co-found, Culture Beyond Compliance, a company that helps nonprofits create safer and more productive work environments. And now, in between work meetings and managing a busy mom schedule, I am working to decrease Indiana’s unintended pregnancy rate with a free birth control initiative.

Tell me more about the free birth control initiative. When I lived in Colorado with my husband and two children, I was able to witness the significant impact of Colorado’s free birth control program. A $50M gift from the Susan Buffet Foundation provided free long-acting reversible contraception (LARCs) to all for five years. Access to birth control allows for healthier pregnancies and reduces infant and maternal mortality rates — of which Indiana has some of the highest rates in the country. It significantly decreases unintended pregnancy, thereby reducing the tax burden paid to support those pregnancies. By allowing individuals to wait for pregnancy, birth control can increase household economies and help close the gender pay gap. I realize birth control isn’t for everyone, and that’s ok too.

Give Mom the gift she really needs

After experiencing the Colorado LARC program first-hand, I couldn’t help but talk about it frequently. And then one day, it turned out someone was listening. A potential donor approached me to ask how to contribute to a LARC program here in Indiana. The problem was, no program existed. We decided to work together to try to pilot a free birth control program focused in Fort Wayne — and we set out to have conversations with any health provider who would call us back. With the donor on a year-end deadline, and the pandemic raging, two programs emerged as possibilities: IU Health’s PATH4YOU and the local Planned Parenthood clinic. As of February 2022, both programs are offering free contraception to anyone in need.

What are actions others can take to support you and your work? I want to support families and prove that we can turn the corner on infant and maternal mortality here by eliminating any financial obstacles to reproductive health. I urge residents to spread the word by telling people about the free birth control options available in Fort Wayne, or to make a financial contribution to either program, since the need for contraception access far outweighs the private funding currently available. CHRISTOPHER SPALDING By Lauren Caggiano | Photo by Mollie Shutt

Christopher Spalding’s story is a lesson in: you don’t always know what life has in store for you. Spalding grew up in a military family in Virginia and intended to follow that path, but he later found out he was medically unable to serve. That didn’t stop him from pursuing other passions, however. As a young man, he played several sports and participated in the arts. He’s a man of many talents, and when he was younger, his teachers took note. “In elementary school, my music teacher pegged me as a singer,” he said. “She said’ “hey, this kid might have perfect pitch.’ And so, I became a singer (and did that) through middle school and high school. Later I started getting into show choir.” From then on Spalding was affectionately known as a “theater kid” but also an athlete, playing football. When it came time to pick a college and a major, he decided to follow his heart and study musical theater at the Shenandoah Conservatory. This decision was not without trepidation, however. Recalling that formative time in his life, Spalding shares how he was afraid to disappoint his grandfather by not going into the military. His grandfather’s response is cemented in his brain to this day.

MAY IS BETTER HEARING & SPEECH MONTH

“I know it’s not in you to fail,” he told Spalding. “So whatever you choose to do, I know you’re going to be great. And so someday, I’m gonna see your name in lights. And that’s something I wake up with every day.” Spalding’s introduction to ballroom dancing is a story in and of itself. He took an introductory course in college and really enjoyed it. Upon graduation, he sought out dance studios and really got into this style of dance — so much that he ended up teaching part-time. While living in Chicago, he was able to juggle both theater and ballroom dancing on the side. One day an opportunity presented itself and he was able to transition into teaching full-time.

Do you often ask people to repeat what they say? Do you have trouble hearing in groups? Do you think others mumble? If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, it is important to have a free hearing evaluation. Call today to schedule an appointment! 260-338-2942.

That move also proved to be the right choice personally, as he met his wife Kelly on the job. Today, the two compete together and co-own the Fort Wayne Ballroom Company. Spalding says it’s a privilege to teach adults from all walks of life how to dance. The most rewarding experience is seeing the transformation right before his eyes. Spalding is also a brain cancer survivor. Diagnosed after having a stroke in 2020, he said he’s lucky to have his life — a fact he doesn’t take lightly. That’s why he likes to pay it forward by raising money for causes close to his heart, such as veterans and people with Down’s Syndrome. a

READY FOR THAT WEEKEND GETAWAY? #VisitWabashCounty

Age: 18

GET YOUR TWO NIGHT SPECIAL TODAY.

Part of growing up is figuring out who you are. At 18 years young, Caleighsta Edmonds is well on her way. She graduated from New Tech Academy at Wayne High School last year and is currently at Howard University in Washington D.C. with plans to go to law school. Edmonds has changed majors three times — from psychology to political science, and now English. She made the changes because she realized she would be better served by studying something that she has a natural affinity for rather than pursuing a degree in something she thinks is the appropriate choice for her career. While deciding on her major has not been a straight line, there was one thing she was sure about from an early age. In middle school, Edmonds first heard the words “Historically Black College or University ‘’ or HBCU. After learning what it was, she was determined to pursue her education at one.

Edmonds also chose Howard University because it has the most black undergraduates who go on to medical professions. Before deciding to become a lawyer, she had planned to pursue medicine. “I feel like racism in the medical field is the most overlooked, but the most fatal form of racism there is because it goes so unchecked,” she said. “Black women are the most likely group to die on the table when they have surgery; Black babies also have high mortality rates.” Edmonds thought the way to fix the racial injustice was to join the medical field. And then she realized that choosing that path wouldn’t be playing to her strengths. One day she saw an article about women of color being victims of medical malpractice, but unable to afford to mount a case against the doctors. That is when Edmonds decided to become a lawyer. Seeing how much racism affects her community, she is motivated to pursue this career path. “I think it’s just better to start something knowing it’s going to be hard than to ignore it because it’s easier to ignore it,” she said. “I don’t think I can do nothing.” a

“I knew I was going to have to leave the Midwest in order to go to an HBCU,” she said. “I ended up applying to eight different schools — six were HBCUs.” Howard University was at the top of her list so when she was accepted, it wasn’t too hard to make her decision to attend. She was inspired by seeing Kamala Harris, who is a graduate of Howard, become the first woman and first black American to become Vice President.

FEATURE FOCUS | Wedding

Wedding Blooms shutterstock.com

By Cathy Shouse

Planning flowers for a wedding takes a mix of inspiration and practicality. Anything that’s fresh and may wilt presents special challenges. That’s why a floral expert may become a bride’s next BFF. Melinda Gilgen has owned A Perfect Blend for eight years. Her business specializes in floral designs, offers gift items and home decor, and has been rated the number one florist by a Fort Wayne Reader’s Choice poll in 2020 and 2021, among many other accolades. “Brides come in with so many different ideas. Everyone now finds pictures on Pinterest and brings them to us. It can be good and bad,” Gilgen said. “Sometimes they want a color we can’t get. We do our best to match what they have in their minds and to minimize their stress.” 18

| MAY GLO 2022 |

Gilgen uses a trusty checklist to put everything together. Future brides will often say that they didn’t think of all that Gilgen brings to their attention. It starts there, with how many flowers will be needed, to decorate the venue, to hand carry or to place on jackets for the bridal party, or to decorate an outdoor arch, which is a current trend.

A Perfect Blend

“Silk flowers aren’t used that much anymore, although we’ve had to mix silk and fresh to get a certain look,” Gilgen said. “Sometimes the fresh flower they wanted is fragile and won’t hold up.” Surprisingly, the venue choice can be a factor. “The rustic barns that are so popular likely have no heat or air conditioning, which can be hard on flowers,” Gilgen said. “For a big wedding, in the past, it’s taken all of our crew of six people three full days to get ready.”

“The biggest thing is fitting the flowers into their budget,” Gilgen said. “Then sometimes after the RSVPs come in, they will drop down the number of tables they need flowers for, so they need to know before we’ve placed the orders for flowers.” Trends? “We see trends with colors. Pinks and whites are in,” Gilgen said. “Some use lots of brights. There is a lot of eucalyptus being used.”

A Perfect Blend

She advised asking the florist up front what their policies are. Gilgen offers a free consultation and secures the order with a modest down payment, with the full amount due at the pick up or delivery. Many decisions about the wedding, in general, will impact what is needed for the flowers. The first step really is a numbers game. Those intimate smaller-sized tables might mean that a larger number of floral centerpieces will be needed. Strewing live petals for the flower girl to tip toe through may push the budget over the edge and might get eliminated.

“Usually there are one to nine bridesmaids,” Gilgen said. “Once, we did a wedding with 12 bridesmaids.” Don’t expect to save money with silk flowers, because price depends on the quality of the silk. Also, digital photos are not always true to color or appearance. The Pinterest flowers have been arranged for the perfect angle to get the look and can’t be imitated by an actual bride who moves around. The costs of the full deal are on a spectrum from $700 to $5,000.

A Perfect Blend is truly a family affair, with more than a half dozen relatives in various positions, often just pitching in as needed. Gilgen’s daughter, Natasha, works there full time and seconded her thoughts. “Yes, Eucalyptus greens are always popular,” Natasha said. “They come in a few different varieties, such as Silver Dollar Eucalyptus, Gunni Eucalyptus, and Seeded Eucalyptus.” The bottom line: the bride gets what she wants to the greatest degree that is feasible. “We try to work with them,” Gilgen said. “They’ll come in with a very high-end flower and we see what’s possible. Some flowers are from Holland or South America. It can be a juggling act.” a

We Love Your Style By Amber Bouthot

Each month, we highlight someone whose style we admire. If you know someone we should consider featuring, email ambouthot@the-papers.com. This month, it’s not a singular someone, but a collective someone: The homeowners in the historic Williams Woodland Park Neighborhood, located just south of Downtown Fort Wayne. Celebrated as Fort Wayne’s first planned neighborhood, Williams Woodland Park is known for its diversity, enchanting architecture, and history. The neighborhood’s beautiful and stately homes, built in another era, are nestled among magnificent trees and lovely landscaped yards and gardens. Best of all, they are a group of caring neighbors who still do “neighboring.” They live life together side by side. They know each other’s names, enjoy watching each other’s children play, and lend a hand when one is needed. On June 4, from 11am-4pm, the neighborhood will host PorchFest, featuring a dozen stages of live music, artists at work, storytellers, kids’ games, food trucks, and more. The entrance to

Understanding Trusts By Lauren Caggiano

So many financial decisions are about setting up your future self and family for success. Trusts are designed to help you protect your wealth today and maximize your legacy for future generations. What is a trust and why is it important to set one up? Erika Dornseif, VP, Senior Trust Officer with STAR Financial Bank, offers insight into this financial matter. A trust is a fiduciary relationship in which one party (the grantor) gives a second party (the trustee) the right to hold title to property or assets for the benefit of a third party (the beneficiary). Speaking of benefits, there’s an incentive to get one’s financial health in order by setting up a trust. “I think it’s important for women to also understand a proper estate plan,” she said. “Mothers are pulled in many directions, but they

should know how a trust or an estate plan works for them.” There’s also peace of mind. Having a trust provides more flexibility and it protects you and your family. Convenience is a factor, too. “A trust can provide investment management, such as managing the actual assets for you,” she said. “We see this a lot with our older clients, where it’s just the surviving spouse. The wife remains, and she becomes disabled or starts to get dementia. If that trust is already set up and in place, we can provide the investment management services but also do the bill paying for her so the family doesn’t have to.” The result is that it simplifies your estate assets for administration for the surviving family. But to get to this point, you need to do some work on the front end. A trust must be set up by an attorney. Fortunately, as Dornseif notes, there are many capable ones in

24

| MAY GLO 2022 |

the area who will sit down with you to develop an estate plan.

“They will review that stuff with you and decide if you need a trust, if you need a living will, and a power of attorney, etc.” Also know that it’s never too soon to set up a trust, especially if you have children. “Getting a trust set up at an early age is a good idea because if you have an unexpected death, having an estate plan will ensure children are taken care of. Do you have a vehicle set up to manage your assets for your children after your death? That’s why everybody needs an estate plan.” When she said everybody, she’s sincere about that. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be ultra-wealthy to set up a trust. Most people have some assets. It’s just a matter of scope and scale. “When you die, there are assets that are going to have to be settled, and it doesn’t have to be half a million dollars. You could have a $250,000 estate —that’s a lot of money to somebody,” Dornseif says. a photos:shutterstock.com

FEATURE | On Her Nightstand

On Her Nightstand What are you currently reading? By Wendy Stein

There’s usually a stack in my reading basket and this time of year is no different. Current reads include “A Memory for Wonders” by Mother Veronica Namoyo Le Goulard, P.C.C. I have just started this for a book club, so I’m not making a call if I like it or not but can truthfully say that the style of writing is quite inviting to the reader. Also, “The Scalpel and the Silver Bear” by Lori Arviso Alvord, M.D. and Elizabeth Cohen Van Pelt. This is a reread of a book that I was introduced to while in college. It’s a compelling book about the first Navajo woman surgeon and how she navigated cultural and social differences in medicine, healing, and well-being. With my kids, we have been reading aloud “Mary Poppins” by P.L. Travers. Now that we’ve entered the chapter book phase of reading with my oldest, it has certainly taken on a different sort of enjoyment as we have a bit more “meat” for discussions and questions on characters, plot, and so forth.

Sherry Binversie is a native Hoosier who, after a few years of meandering, returned to Indiana with her family where they’ve called Fort Wayne home since 2018. Although formally educated and trained as a music therapist, Sherry has set aside her clinical work for now to take part in the joys (and chaos!) of being a stay-at-home parent to her two little ones. You’ll often find her outdoors with her family or curled up with a forgotten knitting project on her lap. Her latest family escapades include traveling in an RV where she often forgets which state she’s waking up in.

Is there a fictional land you would like to visit? Port William, KY (a fictional place that serves as the setting for the fictional work of Wendell Berry). If we are splitting hairs here and an actual fictional land (as in, not even taking part of places we can remotely visit, such as the state of Kentucky), the lands created by J.R.R. Tolkien or C.S. Lewis.

Do you have favorite titles to give as gifts? Haha! Of course this would be a question. My question right back is who is the gift for? Depending on the occasion, their interests, etc., would influence which book I’d like to gift them! •  For baby: Sandra Boynton books (goofy, simple yet fun illustrations; just what you need when you’re sleep-deprived and oh so in love with your little one) •  For an expectant mother: Ina May Gaskin’s “Guide to Childbirth” (if religious: “Made for This” by Mary Haseltine) • For young children: a book of collected fairytales, “The Wind in the Willows” • For slightly older children: “The Chronicles of Narnia,” Anne of Green Gables series a

Kitchen Trends What’s Hot and What’s Not

by Mary Jane Bogle

With more people opting for the Work From Home (WFH) lifestyle, home remodels have skyrocketed. Flexible, multi-use spaces are important now more than ever before, as is more personal and comfortable decor. People are also trading in the open concept for work zones and adding a sense of personal style to areas that were previously more utilitarian. Kitchens are no exception. Here’s what to expect in kitchen upgrades this year.

WORK AND STORAGE SPACES Look for countertop cabinets to make a comeback, offering additional storage that can hide small appliances. Homeowners are mixing this trend with open shelving, giving them space to display custom artwork, portable lamps, or even antiques alongside more practical kitchen ware. “Fewer upper cabinets and more floating shelves are definitely trending,” said Carolyn Johnson with Classic Marble and Stone, “as well as mixing painted and stained cabinetry.” And while white cabinets will never go out of style, some homeowners are adding a pop of color in cabinets or on the backsplash or an accent wall. 30

| MAY GLO 2022 |

Some homeowners are mixing materials, with a different countertop for the island than the countertops. For those with smaller kitchens, however, Johnson recommends using the same material throughout to make the space look larger. When it comes to color, personal preference is king. “Trends have been strong with whites and greys,” said Johnson, “but we are seeing an upswing in demand for dark granites and soapstone, as well as warmer tones.” And while neutral colors are strongest, greens and blues are a big hit, especially with quartzites.

Look for more dark woods, such as walnut and mahogany, to make an appearance, too. When paired with brass hardware, these rich colors add a luxurious feel to any space.

SEATING Of course, the kitchen will always be the heart of the home, and it’s quickly becoming a popular spot for work or school. That’s why desk seating is returning to the kitchen, possibly hidden in a freestanding cupboard, or added on to a kitchen counter. Mixing in an antique hutch or pie safe is a great way to create a custom workspace while heralding the look and feel of by-gone days. Double islands are hot as well, creating space for dining or homework on one side and meal prep on the other. Some homeowners are ditching utilitarian bar stools for banquette seating adjacent to countertops or islands, offering a customized, cozy lounge area, often coupled with a small table and chairs.

Full-height backsplashes are still trending, but some owners are taking the trend to a new level by capping the backsplash with a stone shelf. “Large, apron-front sinks are popular, too,” said Johnson. Look for modern takes on the traditional farmhouse sink, with materials like porcelain, fired clay, and even copper making appearances alongside the traditional cast iron in kitchen showrooms.

LIGHTING

This trend works well with what designers call the “broken plan,” breaking up the open concept by adding half-height walls, glass panels, and freestanding furniture to create a cozier feel.

Lighting design is still trending colorful, stylish, and sometimes playful. And while the industrial look is still popular, unusual materials are making their way into the kitchen, too. Think fabric, rattan, or even old cookie tins-turnedpendants. If you’re creating a multi-use kitchen, layered lighting is a must. And while you don’t need to use the same fixtures for task, ambient, accent, and mood lighting, bringing in consistent elements, such as brass or copper, will bring a sense of balance to your lighting scheme.

COUNTERTOPS AND SINKS Homeowners are still buying a mix of materials for countertops. “While engineered stone quartz is a strong seller for kitchens and baths,” said Johnson, “we are selling a broad range of materials for tops, such as granite, quartzite, honed marble, and large-format porcelain slabs. Soapstone continues to be a good seller and has unique benefits, such as being both heat and chemical resistant.”

Remember, you don’t need to incorporate all these ideas at once. Even small changes, such as swapping out some uppers for open shelving and displaying antiques and artwork alongside kitchen items, can go a long way to giving the space a more custom feel, making WFH more comfortable and inviting than ever before. a photos:shutterstock.com

Does your house need a facelift? By Jennie Renner

How do you know when it’s time to replace your siding? Maybe the color has faded or is chalky and not looking like it once did. Or maybe the wood is damaged. “A lot of the homes in northeast Indiana have been built with cedar,” said Kevin Hunter, owner of Windows, Doors & More. “The problem with cedar is woodpeckers, bugs, and wood rot.” Whatever your reason for wanting a new look, you may think that vinyl siding is your only option. While it is the least expensive choice, there are some other products that you may want to consider.

with shutters. Like siding, these come in a variety of materials with vinyl being the most affordable. Keep in mind that if you need new windows or doors, you should consider replacing those before you begin your siding project. Hunter said you can do it out of order, but it might not look as good when you’re done, or you might have to redo parts of the installation.

“It’s usually one extreme or the other,” he said.

Engineered wood and fiber cement products can be factory-finished with paint or stain to look just like wood. They come in a variety of colors and styles and carry up to a 50-year warranty. Hunter suggests that if you like the look of these products, but want to save money, you could upgrade just the front of your home with the engineered wood or fiber cement products and finish the other sides in vinyl. Along with new siding, consider adding some dimensional flare with a cultured stone accent. Cultured stone veneer is a manufactured product designed to resemble natural stone. It doesn’t require any additional foundation, so it’s less complicated to install. You may also want to embellish your exterior 34

blue, green, and red, typically with light accents - like white windows and trim. Or you might see black windows with white siding (the farmhouse look).

In the past, northeast Indiana has been known for sticking to neutral, earth tone colors. “I’ve been doing this for 39 years, and I never thought we were ever going to get away from tan houses or beige-colored homes,” said Hunter. “And now we’re seeing those go away and these bolder colors are being introduced.” Be sure to consider what your roof will look like with your new siding color. If you have a highly visible roof with a lot of pitch, it needs to become one of the colors in your color scheme.

Another thing to remember as you’re preparing for your home makeover is to be patient. Hunter is waiting six to eight weeks to get his orders of siding, sometimes longer. And the wait for shutters can be twice as long. Hunter said colors are trending dark and bold. Everything from dark gray (almost black), to dark

“You can do about four to five colors on a house max, and then after that, it looks like you need to throw up a tent and call it a circus,” warned Hunter. “If you’re going to do the roof later, have a plan.” a photos:shutterstock.com

HOME LIVING | How To

Tend Mom’s Favorite Flowers By Bethany Beebe

This year, Americans will spend an estimated $25 billion on Mother’s Day gifts 1. One of the most popular gifts is flowers. With a bit of knowledge and care, beautiful blooms can be a return on investment enjoyed through the coming season and, in some cases, for seasons to come.

lots of direct light or more cover, covering the basics of care will keep Mom’s plantings pretty through the season. a • THRILLER

Before making a purchase decision, the intended function and size of your purchase should be considered. Some moms like growing a victory garden of vegetables in a battle to be economical and stay healthy. Many of these edibles can be grown in containers close to one’s patio door. Others enjoy larger, flowering, more striking pieces. A bush like a lilac or rose can make that multi-season impact (and smell great, too!)2 Many of those flowers carry meaning historically. Azalea bushes, for example, mean womanhood and love, and pink roses “say” appreciation2. For Mother’s Day, though, little else beats a seasonal planter’s splash of colorful annuals. Whether sitting on a suburban porch post by the mailbox, on an urban apartment’s fire escape, or by the chicken coop on a farm, beauty can be found in Mom’s favorite colors. Containers, even more than their in-ground counterparts, will require some care to maintain health for a season’s enjoyment. To enjoy some visual balance in a container you design yourself, keep three elements of style in mind. A thriller, filler, and spiller help form an organized look3. The thriller is the main focal point, tallest, and in the center of a pot viewed from all sides or in the back if up against a wall3. The filler complements the thriller but does not compete with its overall presence3. Finally, the 38

spiller drapes over the edge and draws the viewer’s eye to the bottom of the grouping3. At the base of the whole thing is the growing medium from which the plants will obtain nutrients and be anchored. You can either mix the medium yourself or obtain the commercially available finished product4. Visiting Purdue Extension’s HORT-200-W will lead the intrepid garden researcher to recipes for good soil4. With medium in hand, almost anything can be used as a container if it has drainage holes for escape of excess water. To keep the growing medium from escaping with the excessive water, a layer of gravel or broken pottery over the drain holes are effective barriers4. With more exposure to heat, wind, and other drying factors than their in-ground counterparts, containers require attention to assure their moisture is maintained4. It is time to water when the top inch of soil feels dry4. To make sure the roots are getting enough, keep adding water until it flows from the drainage holes in the bottom4. One of those drying factors is the longer daylight hours of the warm-weather months. Vegetables, even those grown in containers, require six to eight hours of light per day4. Check the label for light requirements as growables range in need from full-sun to shade-loving4. Whether needing

Aspire Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa Celebrating 10 Years of Bringing Health and Beauty to the Region by Mary Jane Bogle

Aspire Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa just celebrated its 10-year anniversary, a milestone that marks a decade of helping thousands of clients in Fort Wayne and the surrounding region feel confident and beautiful, physically and mentally, inside and out.

In addition to investing in the overall wellness of its clients, Aspire is passionate about serving the community. With frequent donations to area fundraisers for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Turn the Town Pink, Youth Theatre, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Tapestry, and community school fundraisers, Aspire is committed to giving back, making Fort Wayne and the surrounding region beautiful and healthy, inside and out. a

From the moment Dr. Brian Lee launched Aspire in April 2012, he was seeking something new and different, not just for his clients, but also for the business. One way he accomplishes this goal is through extensive research into successful treatments and investments in state-of-the-art equipment. “Dr. Lee is passionate about bringing in the newest and best equipment to his practice,” said Lauren Tosland, marketing director. “He really focuses on treatments that are safe and effective, making sure patients get the results they desire.” A beautiful new body isn’t Dr. Lee’s only focus. His patients’ total health and wellness is his top priority, and he is eager to speak with every patient about a total wellness plan, one they can implement at home. “The practice is all-encompassing, including skin care and whole-body care, integrating the surgical with the nonsurgical,” said Tosland. A personal approach is another top priority for the practice, with Dr. Lee sending each patient a hand-signed letter welcoming them to the practice. “Dr. Lee knows that most patients have been thinking about their procedure for years and understands their anxiety. He puts patients at ease by focusing on the results—results that will often change their lives,” said Tosland.

Dr. Brian Lee If client feedback and reviews are any indication, it’s an approach that is highly successful. “We get stellar reviews from our clients,” said Tosland, “and Dr. Lee’s personal approach always receives high marks.” It’s not just great reviews, a wide range of services and top-rated equipment that bring clients to Aspire’s doors. Often, word-of-mouth is Aspire’s best advertising. “If you get a group of friends together,” said Tosland, “chances are, one of them will rave about our services at Aspire, and the others will either sing our praises or ask for our number.” Take one client who routinely visits Aspire for Botox treatments and skin care products. “At age 62, she looks and feels better than she did when she was 50,” said Tosland. And when clients look and feel good, they gain the confidence they need to improve other aspects of their health as well. “A visit to Aspire often launches people into even greater wellness,” said Tosland.

FLAVORFUL | Recipe

Lemon Sweet Rolls Looking for a unique twist on an old favorite for your Mother’s Day brunch? Look no further than these delectable Lemon Sweet Rolls. Filled with a lemon vanilla sugar and topped with homemade lemon cream cheese, these are sure to have eyes rolling back in heads all around the table. Better yet? The aroma in your kitchen as you bake will be amazing. If we could bottle up the scent and sell it, we would.

Ingredients: For the dough

• ¾ cup milk, room temperature • 2 tablespoons butter • 3 cups flour • 1 ½ teaspoons instant yeast • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • Vegetable oil For the lemon sugar filling •  ¼ cup butter, softened to room temperature • ½ cup sugar • 3 tablespoons lemon zest • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For the cream cheese icing • ½ cup cream cheese, softened at room temperature • ½ cup confectioner’s sugar • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1 tablespoon lemon zest

Preparation: Of the dough In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together milk, butter, and egg until smooth. In another large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, yeast, sugar, and salt until evenly combined. Pour the wet mixture into flour mixture. Stir well with a spatula until no dry flour is visible. Make sure to scrape off any remaining flour on the sides of the bowl. Transfer the dough mixture onto a clean and dry surface. Knead the dough for 5 minutes until it turns into a soft and smooth dough ball. Transfer the dough back into the mixing bowl, lightly grease the dough ball with a little vegetable oil and cover with a lid. Let it rise at room temperature for 1 hour (or overnight in the refrigerator) until it doubles in size.

42

| MAY GLO 2022 |

Pour the dough onto a floured surface and use a rolling pin to roll the dough to a rectangle approximately 20x14-inches in size. Gently spread softened butter evenly over the rolled dough. Whisk together sugar, 2 tablespoons lemon zest, and vanilla extract until evenly combined. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the butter. Roll up the dough tightly into a log and pinch the end edges to seal. Cut into 12 even pieces using a knife or bench scraper, each about 1.5-inches in width. Arrange the rolls into a greased 9x13inch casserole pan. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or seal it in a large Ziploc bag. Let it rise (second rise) at a warmer place for 1 hour or until the rolls double in size.

Bake the lemon rolls Preheat the oven to 375 F. Evenly sprinkle the remaining lemon zest over the rolls and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Cover the pan halfway with aluminum foil if is browning too much. Let the rolls cool in the pan for 10 minutes.

Cream Cheese icing Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the softened cream cheese on medium speed until smooth. Add confectioners’ sugar and lemon juice and beat until creamy and smooth. You can also mix using a whisk and spatula. Spread the cream cheese icing over the rolls and serve hot. Sprinkle extra lemon zest on top, if desired. a
