Congratulations to... cover artist Janet Lynch

E the Cover

Describe the inspiration behind your cover ar twork?

I love the idea of angels being messengers of inspiration and encouragement. I often add wings to the women that I paint for this reason. I also like to tr y out a variet y of different ar t techniques in my mixed media work, such as the crackling and sanding in this piece to give it more of a vintage feel

About Janet

Ar t is…

Ar t is personal, a thing of beaut y that enhances our lives with enjoyment, and touches our souls As an ar tist, it is a vehicle of self-expression, growth and a means to discover what I am creatively capable of.

What inspires you?

Want to put your art on our front cover?

What inspires me most about the mixed media ar t that I create is combining women-oriented ar t work, with the textual component of an affirmation, an encouragement, or an inspirational quote. These mantras add another layer of interest or relatabilit y Most of the time, these are little “notes to self ” that I imagine, by vir tue of our sisterhood, that other women can connect with

Your biggest suppor ter(s):

My mom was always my biggest suppor ter, but she passed away before I began making ar t My fiance, Mark, is by far my number one suppor ter, display-maker extraordinaire and faithful ar t show roadie But truly, anyone who enjoys my ar t work is my suppor ter.

Why you read glo:

When I found my first copy of glo, it felt a bit like I had discovered buried treasure The format, the feel of the ear thy paper that it is printed on and the ar t work made for instant intrigue. I love that it is by women, for women and about women’s interests. The fact that it is local makes glo even more essential I have always loved that glo highlights different local ar tists’ work on the cover and the ar tist profile is what I always read first

Anything else you would like to add?

As a kindergar ten teacher by day and an aspiring ar tist by night, weekends and whenever else I can capture the time, I am a bit of a late bloomer as a maker, having just begun painting three years ago in my 50s I want to encourage women of all ages to believe that it is never too late to discover and explore a new passion in life. And for that my hear t is grateful.

Where else can we find Janet Lynch’s Hear t Werk?

Creative Women of the World, downtown For t Wayne Paper Moon, downtown Roanoke https://www.facebook.com/Hear tWerkMixedMediaAr t/ a

To submit your entr y, send ar t as an e-mail attachment to srawlinson@the-papers com or send a produc tion-ready image on a CD via mail to: glo Magazine, Attention: Sue Rawlinson, PO Box 188, Milford, IN 46542.

The Nitty Gritty: glo front covers are open to female ar tists Submissions from all original 2D media (digital ar t photographs are OK) are welcome. Ar t work must be photographed at a high-resolution (300+ dpi) for reproduc tion Content should reflec t a woman or women Cover ar t selec tions are made at the discretion of glo staff. For cover placement, the ar tist will receive credit and added exposure via introduc tor y copy and published photograph in a question and answer sec tion

Cover ar t is cropped to 10” wide x 13” high. Submitted cover ar t should be sized as 10 5” wide x 13 25” tall and, when possible, please allow 4.5” at top of ar t work for glo masthead placement The ar t chosen will confer rights to the cover image only as it relates to the publication and glo The ar tist shall retain all other rights.

Tracy Downey

Stor y and photo by Kayleen

“Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do, but how much love we put into that ac tion ” –Mother Teresa

Limitless love might best describe the hear t of Trac y Downey. That ’s why Mother ’s Day is an ex tra big deal for her rural Ossian household. Downey is mother to eight children, three of whom are biological and five of whom she and her husband adopted from China

The idea of adopting was not new to Downey. “I began think ing about it as a teenager, ” she said In the mid-2000s she and her husband researched the countr y of China as a place from which to adopt

When she found daughter Angel on a waiting list, Downey sent Angel’s photo to her husband (who works at Wells Fargo). Both felt instantly that the two-year-old living in an orphanage, half a world away, was meant to be par t of their family In March 2009 they traveled to China to complete the adoption

Since then, the Downeys have returned to China twice, each time returning with two children as new members of their family Sons Corban and Tegan arrived first, while Esther and Xavier arrived in the U S with their new parents in spring 2016

Several of the children from China have bir thmarks on their faces called congenital nevus Facial bir thmarks on Angel and Tegan have been surgically removed, but Corban and Xavier have more ex tensive bir thmarks that doc tors say may be almost impossible to remove

“I t didn't matter to us about the bir thmarks, ” Downey said “ We don't feel there is anything

abnormal… we point out how we each are the same and different They are loved, no matter what ”

And life challenges and difficulties? They don’t phase Downey and what matters most is, ver y simply, family. “Some things in life may not make sense, but we will stick together as a family I appreciate the sacrifice their bir thmothers made to enable us to love them ”

Yet, there’s more. As if raising and nur turing eight children wasn’t enough, this mega-mom also has a master ’s degree in social work and works fulltime with clients at DaV ita Dialysis Center in For t Wayne A testament to mak ing time for what ’s impor tant, Downey is a beautiful example of giving back to this life O f always mak ing room for more, if it means a life of love And what a remark able way to live and what a hear t that epitomizes what can only be described as true, motherly love. a

Lindsey C lark

Age: 18

At an age when many young women struggle to find their identit y, Lindsey Clark already has solid footing. The 18-year-old student at Indiana Universit y-Purdue Universit y For t Wayne is faith-filled and not shy about sharing her religious beliefs

“My faith in Jesus Christ affec ts ever ything I do, ” she said “I t has changed the way I treat others, how I view life, where I find my purpose, my identity and my hope ”

Speak ing of identity, music has been par t of her life since she can remember Singing had been a longtime passion, but she didn’t star t learning the instrumental side of music until given a guitar by her grandparents for Christmas, at age 9 From there, she was hooked.

Her early fascination with musical instruments led to an everevolving quest as a musician with two years in a guitar club, playing clarinet for five years in the high school marching band all in addition to a love for strings of guitar and violin.

Even in just eighth grade, her mother mentioned a new strings club star ting up at the school “My mind immediately raced to a video that I had seen just days before on America’s Got Talent featuring a group called “‘Nuttin’ but Strings’, ” she said. “I thought they were absolutely amazing with how well they captivated the audience's attention while showing their passion. I loved the idea of having the oppor tunity to be like that and enter tain people while having fun.”

She still carries with her the belief that music can be a catalyst for change, especially when combined with God’s love. “I tr y to center my passion of music around Jesus because without Him, I'm nothing good, and I just want to show the world how great He is and how much fun it is to really live in an understanding of how deeply He loves us, ” she said

Look ing to the future, she said her ideal career would be a “ministr y that connec ts music and people’s stories together to draw others closer to God ” To that end, she is look ing into double majoring in both business and music She trusts that whatever decision she makes will be the right one because it ’s God’s plan

“ Throughout this big decision, I am praying that God will use my life for Him in whatever career He leads me to, ” she said

Whatever direc tion life takes Clark, we’re confident it ’ll be the right one.

BEACHIN’ BLISS

Romance and a view to die for Those are just a few of the perks a destination wedding has to offer What more could a gal ask for? Lynn Blanchard and her husband, Dan, are relishing in their beautiful island wedding this winter in Jamaica, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

The couple, who met socially, tied the k not on Jan 26 at the all-inclusive Sandals South Coast Jamaica As both are beach lovers, a destination wedding seemed appropriate and fitting. Escaping the cold Indiana weather wasn’t a bad idea, either. While it was a typical winter day in the M idwest, Blanchard and her husband-to-be basked in the sun and in the pristine waters of the Caribbean. In fac t, she was at the beach just a few hours before the ceremony

Blanchard described the ceremony as an “intimate affair.” They limited the guest list to two close friends. I t was simple but sophisticated. Her bouquet was minimalistic but tasteful. The resor t coordinated the officiant and the details of the ceremony. A photographer captured the magic of the afternoon. Blanchard said she cannot say enough good things about the wedding planner and the Sandals team They made things seamless and easy, even when planning the details of the day from thousands of miles away

The Dress and Dreamy Details

O f course, par t of the fun of planning your dream day is the search for the dress. In her words, it was a “ver y beachy style” dress from David’s Bridal, with long lace and a sheer slip underneath She said it was exac tly what she wanted and she k new right away it was “the one ” Multi-talented, she did her own hair and makeup All other vacation attire came from For t Wayne’s own Urban She-K Boutique The couple found their rings at Will Jewelers in For t Wayne The ceremony went off without a hitch and they were able to enjoy the rest of their stay in paradise

There was plenty to take in during their week long getaway, said Blanchard The couple enjoyed outdoor ac tivities like paddle boarding and snorkeling, as well as fine dining and nightly enter tainment She said they especially appreciated the backdrop of the nature preser ve and the miles of beaches. As she put it, “I woke up to sunshine and beautiful weather ever y day.”

Blanchard said she’d recommend a destination wedding to anyone wanting to simplify and make the day a little more personal I t can also be costeffec tive because you don’t have a lot of the expenses that come with a traditional wedding. She also recommends leaning on the right people to make planning the trip a little less stressful. She worked with an agent at Covington Travel, who was a huge help

“ We had about a month to book ever ything and she was able to push ever ything through, ” said Blanchard.

Indeed, sometimes the most beautiful things come together at the last minute.

DESTINATION DETAILS

Many destination wedding couples allow about 8-12 months of planning typically, said Christie Rans, an agent with Edger ton Travel in For t Wayne However, if you prefer to go the spontaneous route, there are destinations where you can be married within 24 hours of arrival. Examples of such destinations include Jamaica, Las Vegas and the Cayman Islands.

The locale is simply a matter of preference and budget. Jamaica is a popular wedding destination said Rans, because there is less paperwork and no bloodwork is required, along with places such as the Cayman Islands and St. Lucia.

Rans advises brides to do homework For example, if your budget is restric tive, consider

Mexico or the Caribbean Readers should k now that Mexico and the Dominican Republic require translation of legal documents into Spanish. Mexico requires a blood test and to be in the countr y for at least four business days before your marriage. “For places such as this, it may be easier to be married in the states and have a symbolic ceremony at the resor t, ” said Rans

Regardless of whether it ’s planned months or days in advance, a travel agent can facilitate the process “ Work ing with a travel agent lends to less stress and a more carefree wedding, ” said Rans “ Your travel agent plans your and your guests’ travel arrangements and follows through until the end Once the travel arrangements are made, the wedding is taken care of by the resor t wedding planner ”

I t ’s a matter of just adding the beach, wedding and of course romance Don’t forget the presence of close friends and family, too. “Destination weddings are beneficial if you have family all across the countr y ; you just meet at the resor t, ” Rans said. “ They are usually more intimate because there are fewer guests, most often the most impor tant people to the bride and groom ”

Along with a smaller wedding often are fewer expenses. Many resor ts are ver y accommodating to wedding par ties, she said, offering discounted (and sometimes even free) wedding ser vices And as Rans reminds readers, “you’ve already purchased your air fare, so you can stay longer after the wedding and already be on your honeymoon ”

Fem Stat #80

The average number of guests at a destination wedding = 75.

Fem Stat #79

Destination weddings account for nearly one in four of all weddings.

DRESSES + ACCESSORIES

The per fec t destination wedding calls for the per fec t dress and accessories to set the tone. According to Autumn Par ton, owner of One Fine Day bridal boutique in For t Wayne, brides have more options than ever today for bridal apparel and accessories. She said brides today typically opt for more “fitted, lightweight and flow y ” choices, with straps for destination wedding ceremonies

Fem Stat #81

The average budget for a destination wedding = $22,443. Wow!

Light fabrics that do not cling to the body are best for outdoor nuptials. Materials like linen, chiffon, organza and even cotton blends or lace are light but still look tasteful. After all, there is nothing worse than sweat marks on the back and front of a gown. You can go for prac ticality without sacrificing sophistication

Ladies shouldn’t feel limited by color, either. Champagne, blush and cream are feminine and soft shades that tend to flatter most sk in tones. Bridesmaid dresses in neutral colors are also trending, said Par ton. She’s seeing both shor t and long styles in demand. Speak ing of flattering, she said a simple but classy updo off the neck is a nice touch to take into account humid weather

Accessories

What ’s a dress without some accessories to accent it?

Par ton said live flowers are favorite touches as are traditional veils Shoe choice will really var y according to the physical backdrop. Most brides aren’t ac tually getting married on the beach, she said but under a canopy or similar struc ture So shoe choice is really up to you choose what looks and feels best for the occasion If you go the beach route, some decorative flip flips or sandals are a safe bet

Bottom line: A destination wedding is the occasion to plan your day your way I t ’s your time to shine and have all eyes on you So don’t be shy O wn it, enjoy and be married a

Busters

Time is a tricky dimension

Procrastinators know this ver y well If you’re putting off doing something, like bathing the family dog or organizing the cupboard, all the time that comes before the thing you have to do rockets past until there’s no time left to get anything done so you might as well give up on the whole thing and see what ’s on Netflix. But, after a while, that dog is really going to stink and you won’t be able to find any matching lids for your Tupper ware

What ’s a procrastinator to do?

Here are some procrastination busters for even the most devoted foot draggers

Use Timers. Don’t have a timer? You need one. If you struggle setting time limits for your ac tivities, get in the habit of using a timer. I t can be the real deal, a clanging egg timer in the k itchen or your smar tphone Set a limit on how much time you’ll spend doing any one thing, then move on to the nex t projec t when the timer goes off

Too Many Projec ts. Do you tr y to shoehorn 32 hours’ wor th of stuff into a 24-hour day? The

best way to get nothing accomplished is by letting a too-long list intimidate you You can’t make your days longer, but you can make your to-do list shor ter. Prioritize your list on a sheet of paper, then rip off the bottom third of the list and tuck it into a drawer for later (or the trash). Not only does your work load feel like less, you’ve also set the most impor tant items at the top

Shoebox Method. This is an alternative to the to-do list. If you can’t par t with a third of your list, tr y this. Put each task on a single notecard and put the notecards into a shoebox. Open the box and pull a card out at random When it ’s done, rec ycle it and grab the nex t card No list

means never having to feel like you can’t get ahead Plus, rec ycling the card when you’re done smacks of accomplishment

Hire Help. I t would be nice to rent a carpet cleaner and finally deep clean the living room floor yourself, but if you’re overbooked, it might be time to hire a professional While they clean your carpets, use that newly opened calendar space to take on some other chore

Avoid Prep-Crastination. I t would be great if your spice rack were labeled with color-coordinated Washi tape or if you had a great day planner for keeping your schedule But if preparing to get things accomplished (color coding or shopping for the per fec t calendar) takes more time than getting things accomplished, stop while you’re ahead.

Social Media Blackout. Facebook can wait So can Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, Twitter, LinkedIn and email Use social media as a reward for accomplishing something on your must-do agenda. Oh, and while you’re online, remember to set that egg timer so that you don’t overstay your internet vacation. a

Which pet is right for you?

Pets can be one of the great joys of life except when they ’re not. Just ask a mom shuddering as the long bony tail t witches on Stuar t Little, the rat her four th-grader “won” from the school science experiment Or talk the apar tment-dweller down from the ledge when the pooch ate the sofa because there’s no yard to romp in.

A success stor y : Author Traci Douglass of For t Wayne is 100 percent compatible with Clara, her 11-year-old Pomeranian “She’s seven pounds of attitude and sass, ver y motherly and nosey, ” Douglass said “She’s a ver y doting writing companion ”

So, are there secrets to finding the per fec tly matched pet?

The veterinarian is in: Linda Parker, DVM, of Aboite Animal Hospital, offered some insights

ALL DOGS, BIG AND SMALL

Big: Mastiffs are usually gentle giants They have laid back personalities, and usually don’t realize how big they are A mastiff needs an owner that doesn’t expec t too much ac tivity from their pet, and that sometimes enjoys tak ing it easy Mastiffs should be socialized with people and

other dogs at a young age, which is true for all dogs.

Small: Chihuahuas are small and mighty They have small bodies but big personalities and tend to be a little more ner vous in situations they haven’t been exposed to before They need an owner who will socialize them well when they are young to avoid this.

In-between: Pit bulls, labs and golden retrievers are happy, friendly dogs that have never met a stranger

Looking for unique gift ideas for Mom? Or just want to find something unique for your four-legged BFF?

Enjoy some ideas from Adrianna Hensley of Pink Poodle in Fort Wayne:

• Hats with brims that display college team logos

• Sunglasses for dogs

• Crystal-embellished collars backed with leather and nylon

• Iced treat for birthdays, like pup cakes and birthday cakes

"I own a pit/cocker spaniel mix named Minnesota and she gets dressed up with a cute collar and flower that attaches to her collar," Hensley said. But before dressing up your canine, keep their comfort in mind. "Dogs sweat through their feet. If they aren't used to wearing clothes, they will try to get the clothes off It just depends on the dog.”

Hint: If running is your thing, a high energy dog like a V izsla would be a good fit.

WE ARE SIAMESE, IF YOU PLEASE: C ATS

Different cat breeds come with different personalities, just like dogs

Siamese cats are ver y vocal; they should be paired with an owner who enjoys a good chat.

If you're look ing for a calm cat to cuddle, a ragdoll is the way to go

Maine coon cats are outgoing and friendly

ON THE WILDER SIDE

“I do see reptiles, including snakes, lizards and tur tles, as well as small mammals like gerbils, ” Parker said “If low maintenance is the goal and you want a pet that only needs fed once a month or so, a snake might be the pet for you If you live in a small space, a ferret, hamster or gerbil might make a nice companion

“ There are tons of different types of lizards Common pets are bearded dragons, anoles, geckos and iguanas They are most commonly kept in terrariums Some require live insec ts to be fed There are also lots of tur tles that can be pets such as red ear sliders and painted tur tles Some tur tles can carr y salmonella, though, so hand washing after handling is impor tant They usually stay in aquariums as good water filtration is impor tant The proper light source and humidity are impor tant for any reptile.

So which pet fits your wild side? a

Read my lips

Just as the per fec t accessories can make or break your outfit, the right lip color can make or break your face Choose correc tly and your hair, skin and lips will come together in a coordinated look. Choose wrong and you may appear overpowering and overdone If you are ready to achieve flawless lips, tr y some new produc ts and a few professional tips.

Classic combinations

When it comes to choosing lip color, it ’s important to take your hair, sk in tone and natural lip color into consideration in order to find a shade that suits you. As a general rule, women with dark hair and a warm sk in tone should look for shades of red that have a brown base and contain keywords such as “deep, ” “golden” and “coral” to help as guides If your complexion is on the cooler side of the spec trum, then you will want to seek out colors with a little more bite such as shades with “cherr y, ” “plum” and “burgundy ” in their name (i e L’Oreal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Bold Bordeaux)

Blondes who have warm sk in colors can get away with lipsticks with a citrus edge such as orange, coral reds and copper If your sk in is a little cooler, soften the look with muted shades that include names such as dusty rose, light red, plum, pink or anything with a blue base.

Redheads are a little more complicated since their sk in and hair color can encompass a wide

range of ginger hues. Warmer complexions should tr y bright shades of orange and reds while those with cooler complexions should look into blue-toned reds, which are k nown for making teeth look whiter (i e Elizabeth Arden Exceptional Lipstick in Wild Winterberr y)

Anything goes

While it is still common to choose a lip color based on the classic combinations outlined above, today ’s professionals say anything goes when it comes to finding the per fec t lip shade

Tori Schneider, a cosmetologist with Southwest Hair & Day Spa says what really matters is finding a look you feel comfor table with and then rock ing it for all that it ’s wor th

“ We are seeing a lot of ombre looks which is a darker color on the outside that goes into a lighter shade in the center of the lip If someone

is not fond of bold colors, then they can tr y our M irabella velvet lip pencil, which will give them full color but is still lightweight and feels like Vaseline on your lips ”

Quick fixes

For those who are not used to wearing lip color, Schneider suggests finding a great neutral that is only slightly brighter or deeper than your natural lip color And if you are one of those people who hate to reapply your lipstick throughout the day, she suggests using lip liner to color on your lips so that a hue will remain after the shine fades.

“Another cool thing M irabella offers is a clear lip liner for those who don’t want to outline their lips but have trouble staying in the lines, ” she says. “I t keeps ever ything where it should be and helps the color go on easier.”

No matter what formula you choose to follow when look ing for lip ser vice, be sure to tr y as many options as possible before settling on a style.

“ You have to tr y on ever ything; other wise, how will you k now what looks best?” Schneider said. “Lipstick can be expensive, but you get a lot for your money and it lasts forever. Shouldn’t it be something you love?” a

As We Age:

Ti p s f o r h e a l t h y l i v i n g

As a child, all you wanted was to be an adult taller and stronger and older What were you thinking, you now wonder? With the wisdom you currently have, you’d probably like to par tially reverse that childhood wish

I t ’s a fac t of life that we grow older, not younger. But the milestones of aging can be helped along the way with a visionar y road map. Here we’ve listed some things to expec t at the different stages of your life’s journey and we’ve also conferred with some local exper ts who offer tips for optimal living

• The 20s and 30s, your childbearing years, are a great time to begin a fit lifestyle with a healthy diet, which reduces the risk of hear t disease and other chronic health issues Exercise regularly and maintain an appropriate weight Increase your longevity by choosing abundant fruits and veggies, whole grains and low-fat dair y produc ts. Take supplements such as omega-3 fats, folic acid and others as recommended by your doc tor. Some no-nos include no smok ing, limited alcohol and no illegal drugs Wear your seatbelt, have a medical checkup ever y 2 years Protec t your sk in and eyes from sun damage with a sunscreen SPF of 15+ and get enough sleep K ate Sedlaczek NP-C of Forefront Dermatology notes that signs of aging begin to appear on the face and chest, including wrink les, dullness, increased pore size, spider veins and acne in our 30s and 40s “ Ways to help slow this aging process include using produc ts that help new cell regeneration such as creams containing Retinol and V itamin C. Chemical peels are great for a quick, refreshed look and botox helps with exist-

ing wrink les as well as preventing new ones Be mindful of sk in cancer prevention measures your daily sk in care routine should consist of makeup or moisturizing creams that contain SPF Per form monthly self-checks and visit your physician for an annual screening ”

• The 40s bring menopause What fun to finally say goodbye to those monthly sanitar y protec tion produc ts, right? Continue exercising and eating a healthy diet Also, keep your vision healthy You should be able to read the fine print on medicine labels with reading glasses Wear sunglasses; too much sun exposure can cause catarac ts. Also, Andrew Hogue, O.D. of Leo Family Eye Care stressed that eyestrain from tech devices is real. “ We stare at the screen for longer periods of time before we remember to blink, ” said Hogue “Red, irritated eyes bring patients in and we’re treating them with synthetic tears, and have newer and better designs in contac t lenses to hydrate the eyes with Also, I’d have ever y patient especially post-Lasik and late 30s & early 40s ladies wear anti-fatigue lenses such as Eyezen and Prevencia coating for best reduc tion of fatigue and prevention of retinal stress ”

• For women in their 50s, 60s, 70s (and better!), continue the optimum habits you hopefully began in your more youthful years “ Women at these ages can par ticipate in community wellness programs for exercising and using the NuStep machines, which help keep them mobile and increase their strength and endurance so they will be able to per form their daily ac tivities, ” said Mercedes Gozun, registered physical therapist at Coventr y Meadows Health Care “Using these machines along with daily exercise habits will also prevent them from having falls Good joint health comes from ac tivity not inac tivity ” Post-menopausal women need about 1,600 calories per day, according to the U S Depar tment of Agriculture, which recommends 1 5 cups of fruit, 2 cups of vegetables, 5 ounces of grains, 5 ounces of protein-rich foods and the equivalent of 3 cups of fat-free milk in dair y produc ts daily.

More detailed information can be found online for each age group, and now that you have a glimpse of what your upcoming years can be, enjoy the ride. a photos: shutterstock com

Allow yourself to fall in love.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Just like lavender fills the meadows, you dot the landscape with your natural beauty You make the simplest outfit look like haute couture and you k now how to make the ordinar y ex traordinar y Expand your mind, seek out new sources of inspiration and make an unexpec ted change I t will work out better than you imagine a

The Winner Real

AMA ZING LOVING STRONG HAPPY SELFLESS GRACEFUL

When I was a little girl, my mother and I engaged in a bizarre ritual each evening that can only be described as a cross bet ween a friendly competition and an all-out war

I t went something like this: Each night when my father pulled into the driveway, my mother would announce his arrival and declare that she would be the first to greet him when he walked through the door Never one to back down from a challenge, I would race into the k itchen and wriggle my three-year-old self through the Juliesized space between her legs in order to plant myself in front of her when my father appeared

I got the first hug ever y time

As proud as I am of my undefeated record in this par ticular spor t, you had to give credit to my mother for the way she handled ever y loss While I gleefully recounted my vic tor y to anyone who

would listen, my poor mother had to contend herself with the consolation prize of putting my father ’s Thermos in the sink and hanging up his coat She didn’t seem to mind getting beat by a toddler, and if I didn’t k now any better, I would say she ac tually wanted me to win.

As if losing to me ever y night was not enough, Mom also had a tendenc y of tak ing a backseat to my grandmother, especially after my grandfather died and Grandma wasn’t as ac tive as she used to be. Not long after I moved out, Mom and Dad got into the habit of tak ing my grandmother out to dinner with them ever y Friday night, and ever y Friday night, my mother insisted on waiting in the car while Dad collec ted his mother at the door and saw her safely inside at the end of the evening She sat across the table from the dynamic duo as the two of them chatted happily throughout the meal and, more often than not, she was left to put on her own coat while my dad helped his mother with hers

Yet, Mom harbored no resentment at her second place position in my father ’s life In fac t, she told

me many times she was proud that my dad and I had a close and loving relationship until the day he died She delighted in the fac t that although he was no longer a little boy, Dad was still the apple of his mother ’s eye. By encouraging a strong bond between Dad and the “other women” in his life, Mom believed it made her relationship with him even stronger. And believe me, my father k new who the real winner was in his life and how without her, he would be nothing

“I have always loved you…marr ying you made my life complete You are the best thing that ever happened to me and I have received ever ything from life that anyone should because of you, ” he wrote to her in 1987

This month, as we honor the women who brought us into the world, let us not only recall the ways in which they “lost ” so that we could win, but the selfless ways they put someone else’s needs ahead of their own and how so often they dimmed their own light in order to let someone else shine Happy Mother ’s Day! a
