As a small-town teenager, I often find myself dreaming of bigger and better things. My aspiration at the time I was creating this painting was to move to a big cit y and live my own life as an independent woman.

Ar t, to me, is an expression of one’s mind thoughts, feelings, opinions, etc. Essentially, it is a physical representation of what we see in our heads and how we want to por tray it to others.

What inspires you?

I am often inspired by my day-to-day emotions. When something is weighing me down, I paint out my frustration. However, when something has made me incredibly happy, I create bright, color ful works. It all depends on how I feel when I star t a project.

As a young, aspiring ar tist, many people have graciously suppor ted me the past few years My friends and family have always recognized my ar tistic abilit y and have encouraged me to seek a future in ar t. My high school teachers have also been great suppor ters and my ar t teacher, Shanna Fleet wood, always made me excited to learn new media

I“was in trouble kind of a lot.

I t wasn’t my fault I was curious Or that I had an uh-may-zing imagination Or that I’d leap from balconies, fight boys and pretty much be drawn to thrills like a mosquito to a bug zapper

Nope, not my fault

If questioned, the nonchalant response was easy-peasy : Blame my brother “Dave did it.” Then I’d walk away passively.

Mom wasn’t fooled.

Recently, I moved to a new home As par t of the moving process, I scoured through boxes of life’s memories I found several dusty sheets of handwritten sentences. “I promise to make ever y effor t to be polite and k ind to Dave.” And so it read for another 99 lines. In cursive. Ugh.

Thus was Mom’s (completely brilliant) punishment Write sentences or she’d make me watch an opera Double-ugh Madama Butter fly, I promise I’d appreciate you more now than then.

I think of the promise I wrote (100 times) for being a jerk to my brother When you’re a pigtailed punk, forced promises are pretty empty But how refreshing, as an adult, that promises hold so much more meaning, right?

They ’re words of hope They ’re aspirations Promise means there’s a brighter world, there’s improved oppor tunity, there’s deeper goodness and k indness just around the bend

Sometimes we just need to get out of our own way

If I were to write my sentences today, they ’d read: “I promise to be good to myself I promise to believe in my abilities I promise to be k ind and gentle I promise to be a better person tomorrow than I was today ”

How would your sentences read?

I t ’s easy for life’s trials to pull us down. For the world’s downers to deflate our spirit. For the naysayers to ex tinguish our hopes and dreams.

Many of this spring’s cuts and styles are naturally edgy “Personally I see blunt bobs, lobs and long layers to be on major trend again this spring, ” said Ashley Hopper, owner of The H Society Salon at For t Wayne Sola Salons “ They ’re fresh and really versatile They also get your hair prepped for the summer by removing dr y, damaged ends ” To achieve an edgier look, Hopper said, go bold “Undercuts are still hot, but can be more tamed and modern. For a tight crop, just removing some weight in the back of the neck can do wonders and also give a chic and feminine look.”

The spring runways were filled with ‘80s-inspired hair as well, including big dramatic curls and slicked-back ponytails. No matter which style you choose, Hopper said, color can help you make that style pop. Hot colors for spring include rose gold and anything with a metallic glint

Like many women, Nicole Leigh Shaw ’s path to finding her passion and her profession has been meandering There were the sidetracks of having children (she has four, all under the age of 12). And the moves. During 16 years (so far) of marriage, her husband’s career took them from New Jersey to Nor th Carolina to B oston to Atlanta and, finally, to For t Wayne, where they ’ve lived for seven years

Her work through this time has evolved from newspaper journalist to academic journals editor to Mom blogger to published humorist to T V writer to freelance writer What nex t?

Attending seminar y to become a licensed and ordained minister in the United Church of Christ

Shaw, though raised an ac tive and devout Catholic, said the first ink lings of her calling occurred from involvement in Vacation Bible School at the family ’s Methodist church in Georgia, as there, she shared Bible stories with children I t was then when she’d embraced the beauty of scripture

Soon after this realization, the family moved to For t Wayne After visiting various churches, they found that Peace United Church of Christ was right for their family As their church involvement grew, Shaw began delivering the children’s message on Sundays Her passion for children’s ministr y led others at the church to suggest she become their direc tor of Christian education. Her success in this area then led a church board member to ask if she’d considered becoming a licensed minister. Then, another suppor ter suggested she may want to be ordained. “I’ve had to have people tell me what it is I want to do nex t, ” she laughed “Luck ily, I’m blessed with a great mentor at Peace, Pastor Christen Pettit M iller ”

“ When we show our true selves to others, we evangelize by example. Ever ybody is heard in our church community. You get to k now them; and when you k now someone, you have no choice but to love them Then you are doing what Christ wants us to do ”

“I’m still a humorist. I’m tr ying to uncover and share with others the humor in the Bible, ” said Shaw “I believe that humor and humanity are inex tricably linked Humor is one of our control valves to let the pain out ”

Madeline Roebel

It ’s not ever y young woman who knows what she wants to be when she grows up For Madeline Roebel, 19, there was no question that a place in the fashion world was her destiny.

“ When I was a little girl, I would make dresses out of sheets and steal my mom’s heels, ” she remembers fondly.

Fast for ward several years and this first-year college student is at Indiana University-Purdue University For t Wayne pursuing a marketing degree and has plans to continue her education at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She hopes to enter the workforce someday, well-rounded and savvy, with the k nowledge of how to design and create but also market produc ts, forecast trends and run a company, she said

Roebel is no stranger to the business world, having been lovingly raised within a business family

“Both of my grandfathers were entrepreneurs and have now gone on to different investment projec ts, ” she said. “My father is a business investor as well. I t was inspiring growing up around people who once had nothing and took risks to star t something to suppor t their family ”

Speak ing of inspiration, Roebel is no stranger to success. She’s already won her share of awards and is an example to other young women to chase their dreams.

As a sophomore at Homestead High School, she won best in state for fashion design in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s STAR competition, then went to nationals and was awarded a bronze medal at nationals in San Antonio, Texas.

At the end of her sophomore year, she received Homestead’s first-ever distinguished fashion designer academic award for contributions to the school at nationals. She continued that momentum her junior year, winning best in state for entrepreneurship in the FCCLA STAR competition, followed by a silver medal at nationals in Washington, D C

“For this competition I had to create a business plan, ” she said. “I created a business plan for my own company I want to star t, Madeline Roebel Luxur y Designs. Then at the end of my junior year I received another award from Homestead High School, which was the entrepreneurship academic award for my fur ther contributions to the school ”

Today, Roebel is a busy college student with a bright future ahead and a contagious sense of enthusiasm.

“I just want to inspire people to find their passion and turn that into their profession, ” she said. “My mom always said if you don't wake up excited and happy to go to work, you're doing the wrong thing with your life.”

V ick i Eber, a lifestyle and wellness coach with Full Circle Wellness in For t Wayne, offers some insight into the role diet plays in slimming down First, she noted there is really no holy grail when it comes to nutrition I t really comes down to common sense and being in tune with your body

“Ever yone has a different response to food, so being aware of what foods you are consuming and what body response you have is important, ” she said

M indfulness is another fac tor. Eber advises clients to take their time eating and slowing down to enjoy food, instead of eating mindlessly and on the go.

Stress!

Stress is another often-overlooked variable I t can be a major source of weight gain especially around the midsec tion as it increases the stress hormone cor tisol, she said

“Cor tisol increases our fight or flight response, ” she said. “ We crave more unhealthy junk food items and our appetite increases. With that increased stress response of fight or flight, our bodies tend to store for feast of famine ”

Stress also has some other nasty effec ts, like suppressing the immune system and digestive process. To counterac t this, Eber suggests regular, consistent meals along with regular ac tivity. Speak ing of ac tivity, it can

increase metabolism, especially in tandem with a balanced diet of protein, grains, dair y, fruits and veggies

The word “balanced” is key here, as Eber warned: “If we are constantly eating bread, cheese, meat and fatty items, all of which taste absolutely wonder ful, we are not providing enough of the essential nutrients our bodies need from fruits and vegetables “

Be Realistic

Eating healthfully is the end game, but we also must be realistic Allow yourself a treat ever y now and then or else there is risk of overindulging later, Eber said Moderation is key A general rule of thumb is to avoid over-consuming foods that conver t to sugars, such as white breads, pastas and rice

Flush Often

Just as impor tant as what we eat is what we drink Water intake is important, as it flushes out fat and toxins Sodas and sugar y drinks should be avoided, as Eber said they can cause bloating and weight gain

Finally, Eber reminds readers that there’s so much more to health than look ing good in a bik ini Having a healthy relationship with food is one of the best gifts you can give yourself long-term

Lucky Key Lime Cheesecake Squares March’s Recipe

CRUST:

¾ cup crushed graham crackers

½ cup crushed vanilla wafers

Direc tions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Combine graham cracker and vanilla wafer crumbles.

Cut in butter until crumbly.

Press into greased 9 x 9 glass casserole dish.

Bake for 12-15 minutes, until slightly golden.

Set aside to cool

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

1⁄2 cup white sugar

1 egg

Direc tions

• Beat softened cream cheese, sugar and egg until smooth with elec tric mixer.

• Add lime juice, lime zest and cornstarch until smooth

• Spread mix ture evenly over baked crust

• Bake at 350 F for 25 minutes

My waitress first told me about their handcrafted beers and cocktails (if handcrafted beers are your thing, you’ll love The Golden!). I opted for their signature drink, The Golden This drink has turmeric-infused vodk a with lemon the combined flavors were refreshing and unique I star ted my meal with the confit chicken wings crispy on the outside and juic y inside with an array of citrus and cilantro flavoring For my entrée, I chose the McGolden a two-beef patty with beer cheese and dijonnaise on a honey bun I t came with a side order of hand-cut french fries and their homemade ketchup. All of the flavors combined gave this burger a unique and satisfying taste I t was delicious!

Parting With the Past

At the beginning of the year, I made a big decision to reorganize my life Now, I’m not talk ing about a simple spring clean or installing a new storage system to contain my sprawling stash of “stuff ” I mean a comprehensive, conscientious overhaul of the way I live and the things I surround myself with In shor t, I am par ting with the past, prioritizing the present and focusing on the future.

I’m not going to lie; it is a time-consuming and emotionally draining process In the past few

months, I have purged my closet of the items I no longer wear and those I never wore. I have eliminated a number of books from my librar y that I simply had to buy in hard back (and at full price) the day they were published and I have tossed out the toys I was hanging onto “just in case” one of the k ids wanted to play with them again Yes, I realize my sons are 27 and 20 and it ’s safe to assume they no longer have need of them, but if you saw Toy Stor y 3 well then, you feel my pain

in order to get the most out of my wardrobe and to unplug from my iPad/elec tronic device at least one night a week The first two have been relatively easy but the last one is a bit like detoxing from an addic tion If you tr y this yourself, you can expec t to experience a few withdrawal symptoms and plenty of setbacks

So why am I doing any of this? I’m in a new season of life and I’m mak ing broad sweeping changes I t ’s refreshing, but it ’s also a doubleedged sword My mother warned me about this several years ago, but I didn’t believe her She said there would come a point at which I would be able to have a simpler and more orderly lifestyle, but I thought she was craz y I could not imagine a time in which I was not ensconced in a whirling vor tex of entropy Chaos and I went together like peanut butter and jelly. I suspec ted we would be together forever. I was wrong.

While it is nice to have a home that stays relatively clean most of the time, I miss the little fingerprints that used to smudge up ever y surface. Although there is serenity in a homecooked meal for two, it pales in comparison to those frozen family feasts we used to consume on the fly. And while it is nice not to have to buy new clothes and to unplug from the vir tual world from time to time, it comes with the realization that ever yone has finished growing and you are no longer required to be a phone call or a tex t away
