From the executive editor

I“resolve to no longer be a clumsy klutz.

I’ll not be the one who spills her wine. On white carpet. Repeatedly.

Never again shall I walk into a wall.

And tripping over my feet will be a dance of the past.

Shyyeaah, right.

This self-proclaimed clumsiest woman in America knows her limitations. And they begin with physical grace.

Nope, graceful I am not. While I could blame my harried lifestyle, my hectic job, my teenagers who chip away at attempts of calm collectedness, I instead accept as truth: I’m a complete klutz.

But I’m OK with that. It’s real. It’s who I am. And I own my shortcomings. Do you?

January is such an exciting time of year. It’s when we press the proverbial restart button on life. It’s when we allow ourselves forgiveness and place hope on self-improvement. And isn’t that just lovely?

We women spend too much energy focusing on all we think should change. We don’t like our thighs. Our house isn’t clean enough. The dog stinks. But what if we tweaked that thinking—starting Jan. 1?

Focus on a physical attribute you like. Feel grateful to have a home. And laugh at your mutt’s antics. As I type, mine is destroying his stuffed toy, leaving white stuffing all over the carpeting. He’s happy. I’m happy. It works. Stuffing-to-trash later.

Now is the time to focus on ourselves. To really think about how we’d like the next year to shape. Maybe you’re thinking to start a new fitness routine. Good for you. Make it happen. Maybe you’ll be planning your wedding. Maybe structure isn’t as prevalent in your life as it should be.

These are all great areas of focus—and Glo is here to help with them all. But remember one thing, ladies, as we enter the season of resolutions: ensure your first resolution is to love yourself. Allow imperfection—and learn to laugh at your shortcomings and grow from them.

Above all, keep it real. Be real. Doing so, your year ahead can be bright with fulfillment.

And, perhaps, a bit spotted with wine stains.

It’s often said that the details make the outfit. This time of year it’s helpful if they keep you warm too. We’re talking winter accessories. This season some reliable favorites, like boots, hats and headwraps, are back—with some updates. And there are a few new items on the scene, too.

Follow these tips from local experts to snag the perfect cold-weather accessories. You’ll be warm, stylish and maybe even add a little sparkle to your winter look.

Layer It On

Winter Wears:

meadow greens, gray), taupe, spicy mustard, khaki/olive green, aurora red, burnt orange.” Pink, purple and coral are also on trend.

Show Some Love Hearts will be big this winter, according to Fisher and Ham. Hearts of all styles are showing up in hats, headwraps and even sweaters with heartshaped elbow patches.

Material Girl

“It’s all about textures and patterns. Leather, lace, suede, fur, buttons and sparkles,” said TaylorMetcalf. “Of course, don’t get crazy and mix and match it all. With all trends you need to pick one or two at a time.” Blanket scarves are huge again this year, she added, as well as faux fur scarves and stoles. Mittens are sporting faux fur as well as the above-mentioned playful patterns. The infinity scarf is retiring soon, but try a wrap scarf with fringe or a trendy stole to block the winter wind.

How many accessories does a stylish woman need? All of them! Winter is always a time for layering, but this season those layers include two new items: capes and ponchos. Both are easily layered over or under other items and run the gamut of styles and prints from bohemian to preppy. For popular colors, Karla Fisher and Tiffany Ham, owners of SheK Boutique in Fort Wayne, advised us to, “…think nature: sea (navy, cobalt blues,

“It’s about the fun accessories,” agreed Emma Taylor-Metcalf, owner of Lyn-Maree’s Boutique in Auburn. If hearts aren’t your thing, she said, try a whimsical pattern, like plaid or polka-dots.

The Long and Short of It

Boots of all heights are showing up in stores but the most popular are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Over-the-knee boots and ankle boots both come in a variety of styles and materials. Try them in suede or with a wedge heel to stay on trend. Boot toppers are on their way out, but boot socks, available for any boot height, will keep your toes toasty.

Time to Shine

Don’t shy away from sparkle. Metallics are everywhere this season, from home décor to fashion. Rose gold is holding strong while metal accents with a matte finish are surging. The trick is to not overdo it. Keep your sparkle subtle by choosing accessories with metallic accents, like boots with noticeable buckles, or a scarf with metallic threads running through it. Jeweled hair accessories are also popular. Include them in your winter look by clipping one to a beanie or knit headwrap. a

she glows Angie Hicks

Founder of Angie’s List

If you’d been talking with her and had no idea ‘who’ she was in the business world, she’d be your first pick for a friendly Saturday morning coffee—to simply chill and chat about life. She’s that pleasing and approachable. If you knew who she was, you’d be astounded by her humility and comfortable, calm presence. This woman is a self-made success whose very name is a household moniker: “Angie’s List”—and whose company reported third quarter total revenue at $83M.

Meet the lovely Fort Wayne native, Angie Hicks, who attended local schools then DePauw University and later, Harvard Business School. In 1995 Hicks founded Angie’s List, a U.S.-based website known for respected reviews of local businesses.

The company humbly began in Columbus, Ohio, and is now headquartered in Indianapolis. In fact, Angie’s List has grown megagangbusters—from her own door-to-door efforts, gaining 1,000 subscribers in its infancy to having over 70,000 subscribers in 2013—to more than 4.5 million paid members in August 2015.

Not bad for a Hoosier gal, right?

And what makes Hicks’ story even sweeter is who she is. It’s the determination and fight within to push for what she believed in; what she felt in her gut could work. She couldn’t have been more right.

Her poised strength and intelligence are only further compounded by how real she is. Ask her what’s most important in life? It’s family. Think she’s mastered life-balance? Her answer is raw honesty and humility. “I don’t pretend to be in balance—no one is,” she said. “…but always strive to be your best, set a good example and always stretch yourself.”

So how does Hicks recommend attaining your best? She suggests the following: improve, sharpen, refine—and guard who’s in your surroundings as we often don’t succeed alone. “Surround yourself with people who support you,” she said. “Work hard, but be with those who can have a little fun and enjoy life!”

And above all? “Make family a priority,” she said. “My mom has been a great role model… she was a working mom and set a good example of how to do both (businesswoman and mom). She taught me what a great work ethic is… and if you commit to something, do it.”

And that Hicks has. In business and with her own family—of her husband and three children. “Time with family has to be a priority in life… every day,” she said.

Family, self-discipline and continual refining of self? Sounds like the ultimate ‘list’ for success. a

glow GIRL

Mahogany Townsend

The next generation of leaders is now in school. Mahogany Townsend, recipient of an award from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne, is proof that this next generation—our future—is bright.

Townsend, age 12, has been a part of the Boys and Girls Clubs for about 3 years and has been a familiar face at the Smart Girls program. The program, which involves nearly 350 young women each year, focuses on exercise, making healthy choices and building selfesteem.

Each year, there are a handful of “Smart Girls” who are nominated by the agency for “Smart Girl of the Year.” Girls are nominated by staff based on their grades, their Smart Girl attendance, a teacher recommendation letter, attitude, leadership in the club, and an essay about what Smart Girls has meant to them. In her essay, Townsend wrote “[Smart Girls] has taught me so much. But most importantly (it) has taught me how to be a leader… I want to make a change [in the world] and Smart Girls has given me the courage to do that!”

This year, the seventh-grader at Paul Harding Jr. Middle School was the outstanding recipient of this award, Nov. 3 at the Grand Wayne Convention Center. This distinction caught her by surprise. She knew about the event, but not that she was a guest of honor.

“I was standing there for a few seconds, trying to comprehend what happened,” she said.

She’s since had some time to process what the award means to her. In her words, being a role model means “you’re here for something and not just a waste of space.” She credits her parents for inspiration and providing her with an environment in which she can thrive. She said she has a lot of respect for her teacher, Miss Curl, too.

Her dreams extend far beyond her current reality. Townsend plans to attend college and ultimately become a surgeon. Her even-keeled temperament, in part, makes her up for the challenge.

“I can work well with people and calm them down when they’re at their worst,” she said.

Her positive attitude has earned the attention of peers and teachers alike. She is a great example of how opportunities can be unlocked with the right mindset. Her advice to peers: “Keep trying and believe in yourself. A big problem is (lack of) confidence. Just be confident.”

When she’s not inspiring her peers, the 12-year-old enjoys singing, dancing and drawing. a

Gear Up Gals

Have a weakness for workout wear? No judgment here—we feel the same! And for good reason too since activewear is that rare combo of flattering and comfortable. It transitions easily too, from the yoga studio to dinner out. Read on for what’s new in activewear, shoes and gear.

Active Wear

What’s hot for 2017? Annie Henry of Idlehour Boutique, said some trends to look for are high waisted leggings, compression fabrics (which give a holdyou-in feeling), leather looks, mesh and cut-out tops (all of which she carries at Idlehour).

Age, undiagnosed medical problems and poorly controlled medical issues can wreck a person’s quality of life. Many men have undiagnosed diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity, and hypogonadism (low testosterone). Treating these conditions appropriately can change a person’s life. See if we can help.

Another recommendation from Henry is the nicepipes brand arm and leg warmers. These warmers are made of the same fabric as yoga pants and provide both warmth and sweat wicking. Or, Henry said, Alo’s Moto pants, which have a mixed matte and shine fabric and, “can be worn dressed up or down, and are a celeb favorite.”

Gadgets and Gear

Get creeped out thinking about leeched chemicals in that plastic water bottle? Creeps be gone with the bkr glass water bottle, which comes in a multitude of colors and, Henry said, “has a cult following.”

This device will track your sleep, count steps and comes with a smart alarm, which wakes you after you’ve had the optimum amount of sleep. Female Foodies

Eat Good. Feel Great.

You want to eat well and put good into your body. But, that can be challenging when there’s so much information, some bona fide and some bogus, out there. Like clean eating—what exactly is it? Or vitamins; are they worth it or a waste of money? To juice or not to juice? What about the occasional chocolate—big deal or no? Do diets really help people? Let’s sift through some of the most popular trends and examine what works.

What is clean eating? Clean eating is the practice of consuming food in its most natural, unprocessed, original state. It is, for example, eating an apple instead of applesauce, or strawberries instead of strawberry jam and avoiding refined, processed foods. Should you try it? Eating ‘clean’ all the time isn’t always possible or practical, but steering toward the least processed choice is a worthwhile path.

Are vitamins worth it? Vitamins and dietary supplements are a huge industry in

the U.S., but the Food and Drug Administration said they generally aren’t necessary if maintaining a balanced diet. That said, some people may need to supplement with vitamins, specifically, pregnant women, adults aged 50 and over, and for those who don’t eat well or have a limited diet.

Juicing is a process of extracting the liquid from fruits and vegetables. People juice for a number of reasons: taste, convenience (it’s a faster way to consume necessary nutrients), and dislike of the taste of fruits and vegetables. Another benefit of juicing, said Samantha Singhi of Red Mango, “You can add a wider variety of vegetables to your diet. Many people eat the same vegetable salads or side dishes every day. This violates the principle of regular food rotation and increases your chance of developing an allergy to a certain food.”

So what is the best diet?

In a perfect world, chocolate would be considered a health food. That utopia doesn’t exist (yet…fingers crossed!). Chocolate does, however, have an antioxidant effect and can benefit the heart. Dark chocolate seems to contain more of the good stuff than milk chocolate, but because of the sugar in chocolate, add it sparingly to avoid weight gain.

It’s balanced with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, lean meats and low-fat dairy products. It should also stipulate portion sizes.

Eat good. Feel great. a

Your

You know you’re ready to get in shape, lose weight and take control of your health. Or maybe (pat yourself on the back) you already take good care of your health, but the current routine is getting stale. With so many fitness options out there like gyms, personal trainers, home workouts, yoga, CrossFit, and on and on, you’re wondering…which is best?

Wonder no longer! Let’s look at some of the choices.

Gyms

If you tend toward the social side, working out in a gym alongside the like-minded can be energizing. Too, most gyms offer classes like Zumba, yoga and Pilates, provide help with goal setting and offer healthy living advice and resources. Costs vary from gym to gym, but some offer free passes to help with comparison shopping.

Personal Trainers

Short on motivation? Having someone hold you personally accountable can be motivating. And a trainer can design a personalized workout. On the downside, hiring a personal trainer can be costly, but gyms sometimes will provide this service at a lower cost for members.

Home Workouts

Maybe staying home to workout is the only plan you’ll really stick to. If so, making a one-time investment in a home gym can pay for itself (but only if it gets used!).

Treadmills, elliptical machines and weight

machines are all popular choices. Of course, motivation needs to be strong for home workouts since there’s a couch and TV at home, too.

CrossFit

According to their website, CrossFit is “constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity.” What does that mean exactly? Basically, CrossFit participants participate in high-intensity workouts ranging from gymnastics, running, rowing, weightlifting and more. CrossFit is hot right now with more than 13,000 affili-

Magical Winter Wedding: Lauren Caggiano and Chris Csicsko’s

LaurenChris

Wedding at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art

Lauren, a writer and editor, and Chris, who works in software, met in 2012 on the suggestion of a mutual friend. Their first date of “just drinks” at the Acme Bar turned into 5 hours of conversing about their shared love of travel and enjoying each other’s intellect and wit.

“The rest is history,” laughed Lauren.

Life brings sadness, too, though, and within a period of 12 months, they each lost their fathers. However, on April 1, 2016—exactly 7 months to the day of her father’s passing away—Chris proposed to Lauren with a custom-designed engagement ring. “We were,” said Lauren, “ready for something to celebrate!”

The couple chose the Fort Wayne Museum of Art for the ceremony and reception. “We had one of our first dates there. We thought it would make for a neat backdrop—something different from the average reception hall. We had 135 friends and family join us,” Lauren said.

The wedding party was simply Lauren’s sister, Collette, as maid of honor and Chris’s brother, Nick, as best man. Mark Diefenbach, a pastor and family friend who knew Lauren’s father, officiated. The loss of both fathers was referenced in his prayer. “I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room,” she said.

The ceremony was at 5 in the evening with cocktails immediately following.

“The music was truly amazing,” Lauren enthused. “Chris’s brother, Nick, is a musician. He played piano and his fiancé, Emi, and friend, Filip, played the flute and violin, respectively. We

recessed to a beautiful version of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.’ A band started at 7 p.m.— blues/soul group called G Money and the Fabulous Rhythm that got everyone up and dancing.”

The couple chose an Art Deco theme. “We embraced it in everything from my vintage-inspired dress to the table décor,” Lauren said. “Colors were moss and gold. The flowers were orchids and moss. I added a few peacock feathers to my bouquet and up-do for a funky touch. My mother did an amazing job with the table decor. We used Prohibition-style decanters as centerpieces and attached tags with words like ‘celebrate’ and ‘laugh.’ She also converted a vintage birdcage into a card holder.”

An hors d’oeuvres spread was laid out by Catablu. “The

food was simply amazing,” said Lauren. “They really went the extra mile for us. The flat bread and crab cakes were big hits.” Sassie Cakes made the almond-flavored wedding cake with buttercream frosting.

Lauren said of her dress, “I really believe my late Grandma Pat guided me to it. (She was known for her frugal ways.) It was the cheapest dress in the store and I was able to buy it right off the rack.”

“It was white and cream with a thick, waist-flattering belt. I had a special bolero jacket made by Totally You Alterations. They did a masterful job—the jacket looked like it was part of the dress! I splurged on some ‘20s-style shoes from English designer Rachel Simpson. I also wore my grandma’s pearls and a green broach that I found at Mercantile on Main, pinned at my waist.”

Lauren’s aunt did her makeup and her ‘20s-style up-do was done by Amy Vanover of Amy’s Beauty Salon.

“Oh, and our wedding favors were sparklers!” The perfect touch for a sparkly, magical wedding. a

Ring In Your New Life Together

cdetailing or multiple finishes. The plain round or flat band is always popular.” For the bride, “a classic look is a simple wedding band paired with a solitaire or three stone diamond engagement ring.”

“The most popular material for either bride or groom is white gold,” said Thorpe. For women, white gold “with a lot of detail in the design” is popular for wedding bands. “Stackable bands, mixing rose and yellow gold bands, is a popular new trend, as well,” suggested Thorpe. An “eternity band” (diamonds all the way around) is especially attractive as part of a stacked set.

While brides are digging the trends, grooms are seeking more of the classics. “Grooms are still somewhat classic with their bands,” said Thorpe. “They often choose white gold with some

“The ‘cutting edge’ trend is the return in popularity of yellow gold,” said Thorpe. Other jewelers are citing the trending popularity of platinum; colored stones, pave settings or vintage styles. Using an heirloom ring, or the stone from a family piece, is a special way to tie your marriage to your own personal history.

Whatever style you both choose, these rings will hold great significance as they represent this very special time in your life—together.a

Hip Hair for Brides

What’s hip in bridal hair for the big day? See what expert Dylan Crandall of Inner Beauty Out, LLC at Sola Salons had to say:

•Soft romantic, whimsical and boho-chic are in full swing.

c

•Soft curls, loosely pinned low with any sort of diamond-encrusted headpiece are a beautiful way to modernize classic wedding up-dos.

•Braids! Braids are an awesome way to add romantic texture to any up- or down-do.

•For a bride not wanting to wear her hair completely up, adding a soft, loosened braid through her fringe or side area creates a look in which she feels like herself with a little something extra. I would loosely curl the remaining hair down, add a "fat" braid, and depending on her dress and wedding theme I would add in a little beaded hairpiece or even a bit of nature with flower crowns, individual greenery or flowers to place within the braid.

•Hair "jewelry" is unique, elegant and becoming more and more popular in everyday hair as well as wedding day hair. Diamond headbands, flowers, small ivy-looking greenery are all very romantic and whimsical.

•I suggest talking in detail with your bride or stylist—and looking at photos and discussing the look of your wedding as a whole helps for everything to sync.

•Something really fun for me as a stylist is to help change a bride's look from ceremony to reception. Loosely pinning the hair for the ceremony then explaining to her or her bridesmaids how to simply unpin the updo before the reception and adding in a piece of hair jewelry for an easy transition for a completely different look.

•I always send my brides off with a travel size hairspray to keep with them throughout the day for any quick little touchups. a

Preparing YOU for the Big Day

d c

There is so much planning for a wedding: for family, guests and out-of-town visitors. Then there’s the venue, food, music and multiple other details. The list only seems to get longer!

And yet this special time is also when we prepare to be your own personal best: healthy, relaxed, glowing and beautiful!

How do we manage it all? Enjoy a timeline and tips to alleviate stress and become the beautiful bride of your dreams: 6 months before

You are beautiful just the way you are, of course! But if you have a goal in mind – stronger? leaner? killer arms? – now is the time to start working toward it. A personal trainer is a great resource to help design an exercise and diet plan. Or, develop your own plan with the help of the internet (Google “best bridal workout”). Two great ones to peek at are The Knot’s “6 Month Fitness Makeover” and Fitness Magazine’s “The Buff Bride’s Handbook: Get in Shape for Your Wedding Day.” Exercise is a great stressreliever, but also add in regular yoga, meditation or massages to make this high-stress time more manageable.

Now is also a great time to commit to a healthy diet. You know the drill: lean proteins, lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats from olive oil, nuts and salmon. A healthy diet and drinking lots of water will show in

your glowing skin, strong nails and healthy hair on the big day.

Talk with your stylist about hairstyles you are considering for the wedding day. Now is the time to start growing it, experimenting with color, or working toward a new cut to get the look you want.

Alicia Anspach, cosmetologist and wedding coordinator with Mark of Distinction, said that trends in wedding-day hairstyles accent the dress and reflect the bride’s personality. “Many brides choose an up-do to keep hair out of the way. These styles are great for the winter, or any season, when you don’t know what the weather may be.” Anspach also said, “Beautiful hair accessories as part of the hairstyle are more popular right now than traditional veils.”

Three months before

Find and schedule the salon that will do your wedding hair and make-up. “About a month before the wedding we like to do a trial run-through for the hair and makeup,” explained Anspach. Bridal makeup is trending to a natural look, but “fake lashes are really popular!” she said. “We are applying those for a lot of the bridal parties—they look great in photos!”

Schedule a pre-wedding day mani and pedi session for yourself (and your bridesmaids).

Keep up your exercising, stress-relief and healthy eating.

One week before

“Get your color touched-up and style trimmed,” suggested Anspach.

Get as many good nights of sleep as possible. Drink lots of water and eat as healthily as possible—so you can indulge guilt-free on the honeymoon! Try to find time for a quick exercise session or two and at least one yoga or massage session to lower stress.

The beauty of this special day will shine from confident, relaxed, and beautiful you. a

Budgets The Real B-word:

Organizing money isn’t always a simple task. A personal budget is the first step to saving money because it will help you determine where your money should go each month and what you are spending money on that isn’t necessary.

However, beginning to use a personal budget may seem hard for some people. Where does one start?

Some of the basic steps to making a budget are to know what you spend, how much you owe, determining your net worth (subtract how much you owe from how much you have), and then put the list of bills and expenses into categories according to your income and bill urgency. Once your list is written, keep track of each expense to ensure you are spending only the allowed amount each month.

Jon Leman, managing principle at Leman Financial Advisors Inc., of Fort Wayne, said monitoring your spending is a good way to find out what you’re actually spending. “In terms of budgeting, we believe you cannot manage something until you measure it,” he said. “There are many onepage budget forms online that are available along with smart phone apps that allow you to record your financial activity over the course of a month. Once that activity has been accumulated, you can begin to determine where the money is going.”

Leman also emphasized we should all be living within our means—and to be careful of overspending. He declares job one should be determining where the money is going and then the next step is seeing what adjustments should be made. He also gives some percentage breakdowns. “Housing should not exceed 25 percent of one’s income. Retirement should be in the neighborhood of 10 percent. From there, the rest of the items have to fall in line with regard to what is a: need, want or wish” he said.

And finally, don’t be upside-down. Leman added one last piece of advice: “Many folks forget that if your ‘out-go’ exceeds your ‘in-come,’ you are upside-down. Budgeting is an art, and certainly a game of tradeoffs. If I overspend in one area, I have to make it up elsewhere.”

Some other budgeting tips are to allow wiggle room in your budget for surprise or emergency expenses, set short-term goals and long-term goals, don’t be afraid to readjust your budget for things that come up (such as your kid’s birthday or urgent bill), and have the support of one other person to help with the budget if necessary.

Budgets can seem daunting and hard but they just involve the tracking and organizing of your money to best prepare for the short-term, longterm and everything in between. a

Making Resolutions that Stick

Keeping a resolution often looks as easy as a fist pump into the air and the “Rocky” theme playing, but overcoming obstacles and fighting the urge to quit likely happened along the way. You want the benefits of changing for the better but life tends to throw curves, tempting you to throw in the towel. It’s no wonder that goal setting is laced with equal parts hope and doubt.

The good news: you can make resolutions that stick by simply tweaking how you create them. The key is to be fearless yet to stay flexible on the journey. “I think it's important to assess the aspects of your life as they arrive throughout the year,” said Erin Loechner, a Fort Wayne stylist and writer. “Offer yourself a continued growth mindset to evaluate what's working and what isn't.”

4

4 1. Treat Yourself Gently

“I actually have a tradition of listing non-goals, or nonresolutions for the year,” said Loechner. “Non-goals are a toast to what I love about me: the parts I fight and the parts I fight for.”

She has accepted and embraced that she’s an introvert rather than setting goals to change her temperament.

2. Lead With Your Heart

Loechner said that family circumstances are a worthy reason to give yourself permission to alter your plans. Step away from that 6:30 p.m. yoga class you loved in January for awhile, if necessary. “What if your parents are aging, and in February, your family makes the decision to admit your mother into the nursing home? Visiting hours for dinner are 6-7 p.m. Do you stick to your (yoga) resolution despite the desire to have dinner and a visit with your mother? Or do you prioritize your mother, and feel like a yoga failure, or worse, family martyr, for the remainder of the year?”

Loechner’s book, Chasing Slow: Courage to Journey off the Beaten Path, releases Jan. 10. She went from hosting a two-season HGTV.com web special with one million fans worldwide to redesigning her work and lifestyle around two young children with her husband, Ken. She offers three tips that helped her.

4

3. What a girl wants. Prioritize.

Juggling three resolutions is Loechner’s limit.

“Wake up each morning with a fresh perspective and renewed sense of priority—and choose to live a value system from that place. We are not who we were on Jan. 1. We will have grown wiser, hopefully. We will have grown stronger, hopefully. We must resolve to live our best life daily, over and over and over again.”

As with any lasting changes, they all must start within ourselves. As Loechner said, “I see incredible value in self-discipline and a proactive plan, but I believe both must stem from something innate. Life is not meant to be measured, or checked off, or tracked. It is a gift, not a given. We must honor it as such.” a

‘Girlie’ Problems

Controlling Bladder Issues

Women with bladder problems are not limited to those who have given birth or are aging, according to Dr. Craig Hanson, urogynecologist at Women’s Health Advantage in Fort Wayne. “Kidney stones, an inflammatory condition of the bladder and other causes can result in irregularity of a woman’s bladder," he said.

Symptoms of a bladder problem include pain while urinating, an increased frequency to urinate and blood in the urine. Hanson recommends women contact their physicians upon experiencing such symptoms. “These symptoms should be checked out by a professional as they could indicate a bladder cancer, kidney stones or other serious condition,” he said.

Hanson added that not every bladder symptom is an infection.

“Incontinence, or the inability to hold urine, can have underlying causes, including a fistula (abnormal passageway in the urinary tract), hole in the bladder, lack of support under urethra, or an overactive bladder,” he said.

Hanson adds that physical therapy, surgery and botox injections can also address the problem.

He and other physicians at Women’s Health Advantage are implementing a

program similar to one used in France to address the problem in new mothers. “Our nurse practitioners work with new mothers for several months after the mothers have given birth to perform pelvic rehabilitation,” he said. “The nurse practitioners encourage Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles that have been stressed during pregnancy as well as other practices to help the bladder.” Patient handouts with more information are available at the office.

Tips to improve a bladder control problem before seeking medical attention:

1.Examine food and liquid intake. It might be obvious that drinking too much fluid can overwhelm a bladder and create a strong sense of urgency. Drink small amounts throughout the day, such as two 8-ounce glasses at meals and one 8-ounce glass between meals. That practice will result in intake of the recommended amount of eight cups of fluid daily. Keep in mind that while water is best for a bladder, other beverages and soup count as fluids.

2.Limit fluid intake to morning and afternoon to control the need to get up several times at night to urinate.

3.Eliminate or reduce alcohol and caffeinated beverages. Some foods and beverages can irritate a bladder. Caffeine and alcohol increase urine production. Caffeine can cause bladder spasms.

Other bladder irritants include acidic fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes, tomato-based products, carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners, corn syrup, sugar, chocolate, coffee and tea. What causes bladder irritation may vary from person to person. a

Take care of yourself with a new year’s resolution to get your annual mammogram! Breast cancer will affect an average of one in eight women during their lifetime. According to the American Cancer Society, 100 percent of stage 1 breast cancers can be effectively treated, so early detection is KEY!

Creating Structure in Life

As much as we enjoy our vacations, spring break and summertime when we can relax in the open sunshine, and as much as we complain about going back to work or school, after the initial grumbling, we predictably settle into a familiar routine again.

You may think it would be more satisfying and fun to create your own rules and habits, but eventually you’d tire of it.

Getting away from structure is liberating…until it isn’t. Returning to a regular routine—of exercising, meditating, or meeting friends weekly for a spa treatment or lunch—invigorates us mentally, spiritually and physically and keeps us grounded.

Creating good habits is a tough call and hard to get started, but once begun, will pay off well and give balance and health to your days. A fitness club owner once told me that the biggest problem with new recruits is they come in freshly energized each January, ready to begin the new year with a positive attitude that this year they are going to lose weight, become more fit or build up their strength, but after two weeks they lose interest or give up and don’t return. He said it is much easier if fitness rituals are done with a friend. After all, if it’s just you going to the gym, it’s easy to find an excuse not to go—but if someone else is depending on your presence, you’re more likely to be held accountable to your exercise partner, so you do go.

Focus on consistent daily or three-time-weekly patterns in your habits but realize, too, they are not written in stone. Life happens—you get sick, company overstays, your dog has puppies—whatever, take time out to attend interruptions, but then fall back into your familiar routine. And remember that having no routine is much more stressful emotionally.

Keep in mind that what works for your neighbor might not work for you, especially if you have different interests and passions. It is much easier to keep within the confine of a healthy routine if it is something you can get excited about, something that gets you up in the mornings.

Reading is another habit to form; even if you only read five minutes daily, it broadens your horizons and encourages relaxation.

Commit your gratitude to paper daily. This reminds us of our blessings, instead of what we lack. Spiritual author Eckhart Tolle sums it up: “It is through gratitude for the present moment that the spiritual dimension of life opens up.”

Begin your day with a prayer, mantra or a positive saying that touches you; maybe even pull a serene picture from your memory bank to focus on.

Mentally prepare your success for the day. Visualize what you want to accomplish and set about doing it. Another habit to cultivate is meditation. Even a few minutes of meditation can pay off. Alena Chapman, motivational writer, spoke wisely when she said, “Let go of what’s gone. Be grateful for what remains. Look forward to what’s coming.”

In a nutshell, exercise mind, body and soul—read, pray and be grateful. You’ll be blessed. a

St. James Restaurant

Looking to eat at a place with a whole lot of history and excellent food? If so,

St. James Restaurant in Avilla is a must-see.

Family-owned and –operated since 1948, this former hotel (first opened in 1878)turned-restaurant is the result of hard work, dedication and a family’s desire to revitalize the beauty of yesteryear. St. James Restaurant is recognized by the Indiana Restaurant Association as the oldest restaurant in northern Indiana.

The Ambiance:

Nostalgic and comfortable are the words that come to mind. At St. James, it’s a casual, comfy atmosphere—there’s no need to dress fancy. It’s ‘come as you are’ at St. James.

Choose seating in the family dining area or belly-up to a beautiful antique bar to catch up with all the friendly locals.

The Food:

I had their prime rib—one dish for which they’re known. It was delicious; truly the best I have ever had. Or, try their signature broasted chicken for a juicy, tender selection. Finish dinner by indulging in their famous apple dumpling dessert—which seems to be a must-have for all who eat here.

The Service: Service at St. James was prompt, friendly and good. No long waits here!

St. James Restaurant has delicious food for a great value. If you’re looking for a new place a bit off the beaten path, give them a try. a

glo-roscopes: January 2017

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

Success comes to those who find what they love to do and then do it with their whole heart. Your resolutions should be no exception. If the thought of exercise gets you down, take up a sport. Find something you like, but stay active!

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

You may seem overwhelmed by goals you set but remember to take everything one day at a time. Small steps add up to long strides and Rome wasn’t built in a day. Keep your expectations in check and remember: setbacks will happen. You’ll meet your objectives if you put your mind to it.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

If you give a woman a fish she eats for a day, but if you teach a woman to fish she eats for life. Resolve to learn something new this year and you will be surprised how it deepens your life in personal and monetary ways!

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Are you hoping to find a new job this year? Let your personality be your guide as to the position best suited for you. What you are doing right now may not be the best fit, but there is something out there you’ve never considered.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

When the universe closes the door, somewhere it opens a window. What opportunity awaits you in 2017? Perhaps the biggest challenge will be in finding that open window—but once you do, awesomeness awaits.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

You always strive to do the impossible and that is evident in your list of resolutions. Don’t make things more complicated than they need to be. One or two adjustments can change your entire life, so why try and upend everything at once? Keep it simple.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

Your resolutions center on a creative outlet that will be the envy of everyone you know. Will you discover a hidden talent this year? Will that talent lead to a new opportunity? You’ll never know if you don’t look for it.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

Your motto is “go big or go home” and that is certainly true for your New Year’s resolutions! You have set an ambitious course for 2017, but knowing you, you’ll stop at nothing in order to make those goals a reality. Don’t get careless or things could get messy.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

Although you think the idea of New Year’s resolutions are silly, privately you have one or two, don’t you? It’s OK…you can tell us. It’s fine to tell others as well so they can celebrate your accomplishments.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

You are out to balance the scales and make a fresh start this year aren’t you, Libra? You have a whole “out with the old, in with the new” mentality that is laudable. Just be sure not to accidentally throw away something that is really important, like a certain friendship that has been on the skids recently.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

You are ready to get the word out about yourself this year. Whether you are changing jobs, starting your own business or getting back into the dating market, the secret to your success is networking! It’s time to toot your own horn.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

Take aim and fire on that one goal that has been nagging you for the past three months. You’ve put it off as long as possible and now’s the time for action. Book the trip. Set the date. Make it happen. You may not get another chance! a

Here’s the story…

Every once in a while, my writing career allows me to do something that I think is really cool. So cool in fact, that if I were to go back in time and tell my younger self it was going to happen…I probably wouldn’t believe me. Over the years, I have interviewed my musical idol (twice), called my childhood celebrity crush, met legendary journalists and best-selling authors, hung out with athletic icons and conversed with the man who, this month, will become the vicepresident of the United States. However, one of the stories I am proudest of is my interview with ‘America’s Favorite TV Mom’ and Dale, Ind. native, Florence Henderson.

I cannot recall a time in my life when I was not crazy about The Brady Bunch. Although I cannot remember watching when it originally aired, I rarely missed an episode in syndication. Coming from a small, nuclear household, I loved everything about the hustle and bustle of having a big, blended family like the Bradys. I wanted problems that could be solved in 30 minutes or by building a house of cards. I wanted enough talented siblings to start a singing group. I wanted to square dance in the living room. And most of all, I wanted a mother who had nothing better to do with her day than to help me track down my lost diary, perform “Wherever We Go” at my high school talent show or help me stalk Davy Jones and convince him to take me to the spring prom.

Through my interview, I would learn that even though Florence Henderson was Carol Brady, she was more multifaceted than her television counterpart. Born on Valentine’s Day into a large, but poor Catholic family, Henderson grew up near the Ohio River, was taught by the Sisters of St. Benedict in Ferdinand, Ind. and moved to New York at the age of 17 thanks to the financial support of some personal friends.

She was the “Today Girl” on NBC’s Today Show, was the first woman to sit behind Johnny Carson’s desk on The Tonight Show, appeared on Broadway in a number of productions, did a stint on Dancing With The Stars and was a spokesperson for everything from Wesson Oil to Polident and most recently, the LG ProBake Convection oven. She was a regular fixture at the Indianapolis 500, a benefactress to the nuns who educated her, and a consummate professional who was devoted to her family, her television children and fans.

“I have been very blessed in my career,” she said in the interview. “I love what I do and I am always thinking the best role is just around the corner. I’ve always said I’d think about retiring when I’m 95! I love the challenge of performing in front of a live audience.”

Don’t misunderstand me. My real-life mother was a lovely lady, but she was no Florence Henderson. She couldn’t sing, didn’t needlepoint and (thankfully) did not wear her hair in a horrible mullet. In fact, the only things she had in common with Carol Brady were her Hoosier heritage and that she occasionally made pork chops and applesauce for supper.

She was certainly blessed and for all of us “Brady kids” around the world, we were blessed to have been impacted by her through those 117 zany episodes. The loss of Henderson on Thanksgiving at the age of 82 is a difficult one to accept. She was our surrogate parent who was there to greet us after school. She kept us company until dinner time and showed us that even though life isn’t perfect, we can achieve a happy ending provided that we find out what we do best and then do our best with it. And no matter what, “don’t play ball in the house.”

RIP Florence, we’ll miss you. a
