Romantic Styles

Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day with your sweethear t or a gal-entine’s get together, we’ve got some fun tips to amp up the romance in your look. With a little ex tra effor t and the right color choices, you can create a truly special look for your special night out.

Romantic Hair

Believe it or not, you can dress hair up or down for a night on the town. Loose, tousled waves give long hair a soft look, while an updo, like a simple French twist, can be accomplished with long and medium-length hair for a more formal style.

The romantic s-wave is a popular look for special occasions, according to Christian Heflin, stylist at The Hair Depar tment in For t Wayne. This style, consisting of brushed out s-curls, is reminiscent of the popular “finger waves” of the 1920s.

“ This look is achieved by setting the curls, brushing them out and per fec ting them with a curling iron, ” explained Heflin “Our favorite produc t to finish setting the s-wave is Kevin Murphy Session Spray ”

For a less “done-up” look, consider loose braids gathered in an updo Top with one of this season’s shiny hair accessories, like a beaded barrette or rhinestone clip, for a little ex tra glamour

Heflin also recommended a fun and flir ty look with lots of volume “First blowout the hair using a round bush to add volume throughout the roots Using a curling iron, alternate curling towards and away from the face ” To soften curls and achieve the “undone” natural look, Heflin uses Kevin Murphy Un Dressed Fiber Paste

Romantic Makeup

Color plays a big par t in creating a romantic look with makeup To keep it soft, use pinks and peaches on eyes, cheeks and lips. Apply a peach blush color to both your eyelids and cheekbones, which will give you a total look without the need to coordinate various shades and produc ts Top light lip color with a gloss for an added glow

To go bold on your special night out, you can’t beat a red lipstick. Keep it contemporar y with a matte finish and line fully in a matching liner. You can also give a more subtle nod to Valentine’s Day by coloring outside the box, so to speak. Use an angled brush to add a red shadow in a sleek line beneath your eye just below your eyeliner.

If typical pinks and reds aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to create a romantic look Tr y a soft gold shadow and feather it out toward the end of your winged eyeliner Or, apply some spark le with glitter eyeshadow or lip color in your preferred shade.

Romantic Style

Fun options for Valentine’s Day attire include ruffles, and, of course, all things red If you want to go all-out girly, this is definitely the holiday for you Ruffled hems and tiered sk ir ts are a great choice For a sleeker look that still says “romance, ” pair the ever-popular midi sk ir t with a cropped sweater in a light shade of pink, cream or white

If classic is your game, take a page from Coco Chanel and don the alwayssophisticated little black dress This season it ’s especially popular in lace, a fabric that ’s just made for romantic looks Alternately, layer the LBD with accessories in pink or red to add some whimsy A pink cardigan or scar f will do much to ward off the Februar y chill

Top your chosen look with some spark le We suggest light, layered necklaces in gold, rhinestone bracelets and rings, or vintage jewelr y that features pretty beads and flowers a photos: shutterstock com

Alena Chapman

Author, Motivational Speaker

The start to her extraordinary writing career, as well as a career in motivational speaking, coaching and entrepreneurship began with simple journaling, said Alena Chapman of Fort Wayne.

“Once I made the firm decision to have my happy life back, I began to write everything I was learning and how it was affecting my life in a journal,” said Chapman, whose first book was the international bestseller, “You Can’t Escape from a Prison if You Don’t Know You’re in One,” followed by a second international bestseller, “The Prison Effect.”

In getting her “happy life back,” Chapman referred to a point in her life when she had lost her joie de vivre while trying in vain to make a marriage work, which caused her to spiral into uncertainty and question why so much of her wasn’t accepted.

Chapman’s accomplishments would not have happened without the many mentors she chose, both in person or in studious reading, some of whom include Dr. Wayne Dyer, Bob Proctor, Dr. Depak Chopra and Napoleon Hill, to list a few.

“Study is so important to growth in every part of our lives,” said Chapman, adding that having a positive attitude is a choice.

“Instead of saying ‘I can’t,’ all it takes is changing how we choose to see the situation. Try asking, ‘How can I make that happen?’ That simple change in thought opens our mind to possibilities and new avenues to any challenge or obstacle we face. The best part is that we have kept the ability to change it… A positive attitude is one that opens our minds to possibilities.”

Many valuable life lessons along the way were learned, said Chapman and she shares them on her website (alenachapmanlife.com) and through her programs. Her methods for bringing one to a happier point are not initially easy but with a positive attitude they can be done successfully—by everyone. Chapman offers a multitude of avenues (from podcasts, programs, books, coaching and so much more) one can select to achieve happiness again via her website. This Christian woman is all about loving and forgiving oneself with the power of positivity.

Chapman also encourages us to take time to be grateful for what one has daily. Corinthians 9:6-7 talks about a cheerful giver and suggests that if you’re facing problematic times, you can overcome them with joy: “God loves a cheerful giver / Give it all you’ve got / He loves to hear you laughing / when you’re in an awkward spot! / When the odds add up against you / it’s time to stop and sing / ‘Praise God!’ To praise him is a joyous thing!”

For Alena Chapman that philosophy is right in line with her gateway to happiness. a

Samantha Vance

Age: 9

Valentine’s Day isn’t just about flowers and candy. It is also about loving others and having a big heart—and we think few on the planet have a bigger heart than young Samantha Vance, creator of “Sammie’s Buddy Bench Project,” which helps kids have a place to go for friendship and comfort when they’re feeling lonely.

Nine-year-old Samantha is a third grader who loves to read, write, listen to music—and she has an extraordinary passion for making sure all kids feel like they have a friend. She first got the idea to build a “buddy bench” while attending Vacation Bible School over the summer. “If someone is lonely they can go sit on the bench and others know to go up and ask them to play,” Samantha explained. The bench is also a place for new kids to sit or for those feeling left out or wanting to make a new friend. Once Samantha had the idea, she shared it with her mother, and then in grown-up fashion, Samantha met with the school principal to present her idea.

“I had heard of a company in Evansville that turned recycled plastic caps and lids into benches,” said Heidi, Samantha’s mother. “I told Samantha about it and we decided that would be a great way to get the community involved and would also cost a lot less than a new (unrecycled) bench. Her principal was excited about it and approved her initiative. Samantha then talked to the PTA and the student body to get them excited about the project.”

To help make her selfless vision come to fruition, Samantha visited local pharmacies and businesses to help her save plastic bottle caps. She also attended Fort 4 Fitness to collect caps at the finish line. “Samantha was involved in the whole process from initiating it, to collecting caps, to sorting and then making the long trip to pick up the benches,” said Heidi.

Samantha’s big heart and love for helping others is a sure sign she will continue her impactful good deeds in the future. “I believe this girl could change the world!” Heidi said. “She has already impacted her school district, Fort Wayne and anyone she meets. She is continuing to collect caps to help other schools that have started the project after hearing about what she did.”

This heartfelt effort has taken off in a big way. “Within 2 months we received over 1,200 pounds of caps!” Heidi said. “By the time (we went to) pick up our benches we had collected over 1,600 pounds and were able to get three benches for the school as well as help three other area schools (who wanted) to get buddy benches after hearing about Sammie’s project.”

Samantha would love to see Buddy Benches at every school and park so no one has to feel left out and everyone can have someone to play with. If you would like to help Samantha’s project, Heidi has set up a Facebook group (“Sammie’s Buddy Bench Project”) for those who wish to join the journey. a

jjoy oy 10 tips to finding

in the Journey of love, life + self

No one in the histor y of mankind has ever wished to be less happy, par tly because of how easy it can be to get discouraged Attaining and maintaining peacefulness and positivit y takes a little more dedication Living a joyous life is a choice one must repeatedly make. It ’s a mindset you must train and reinforce with positive self-talk and ac tions. The following quotes can help to shine a light on even the darkest of days.

“Joy lies in the fight, in the attempt, in the suffering involved, not in the victory itself.” –Mahatma Gandhi

Life is a dynamic journey full of pain and challenges; however, we learn the most from our mistakes. Assess your damages and be proud of yourself that you have/are overcoming them

“The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.” –Russel M Nelson

One thing you can count on is that the path of life will be riddled with potholes Being able to approach each with faith and determination will weed out anxiety, leaving more room for joy to blossom

Your Money

When it comes to money and budgeting, many women have a love-hate relationship with their finances But according to Brittainy Chaffee, a private banker with STAR Financial Bank, it doesn’t have to be this way

“No matter who you are, you need to be involved in financial matters, ” she said.

First and foremost, that means getting your financial affairs in order She said married women especially need to be concerned with having a plan in place in the event a spouse dies prematurely or faces a serious illness. How will you pay for expenses if your par tner is unable to bring in income? Who has access to accounts? These are impor tant questions to discuss in advance

However, regardless of marital status, Chaffee said you need to be your own financial advocate and plan now to avoid headaches down the road. A team of financial exper ts can help cut through the clutter and set realistic goals. And, a bonus? I t typically doesn’t cost a penny to review your plans with a financial planner or banker

Regardless of your preferred approach, Chaffee said that a ‘set it and forget it ’ mentality can be fruitful: “Pay yourself first. Automation is a great friend.”

If you aren’t serious about saving yet, it ’s never too late A new job is a great oppor tunity to star t putting money toward a 401(k) or qualified plan I t ’s common for employers to match contributions, up to a cer tain percentage If you don’t par ticipate, you are essentially leaving money on the table.

If long-term saving isn’t in the card right now, Chaffee said anyone can benefit from setting up a budget and stick ing to it When setting your budget, in addition to the basics, don’t forget about typical periodic expenses like vehicle plate renewal, vacations, bir thday gifts and occasional indulgences I t doesn’t hur t to plan for those untimely expenses, like car repairs otherwise you risk falling into a downward spiral of debt. And remember : “A credit card isn’t an emergenc y fund, ” she said.

I t ’s really all about balance No one is per fec t all of the time I t ’s OK to treat yourself if and when the budget allows

“ You work hard and if you don’t give yourself permission to indulge ever y now and then, you might relapse, ” she said So, direc t from the glo finance exper t, it ’s OK to live a little now and then

Your financial security is dependent on your attitudes and beliefs about money and your willingness to take your financial future into your own hands Love your money I t ’s yours Make it work for you a

Aquarius ( Januar y 20 - Februar y 18)

Your love life is over flowing this month, Aquarius, so get ready to explore all of your options and possibilities Perhaps you will meet someone new If you are married, perhaps you and your par tner will take up a new hobby or explore your passion in new and exciting ways

Pisces (Februar y 19 - March 20)

Because you were born just after Valentine’s Day, Cupid’s arrow does not affec t you in the same way as other, more romantic individuals While you may be pragmatic about love, when you find it you cherish it and you never take it for granted Don’t let the holiday pass by without commemorating it

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

This is the month to let your creative side shine Share your hidden talents with the one you love and impress him with this little-seen facet of yourself Perhaps you will surprise your love with a romantic dinner for two, a handmade gift or – Gasp! A live per formance! Whatever you do, you can’t go wrong

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Life is a box of chocolates, but you can’t eat them all yourself I t ’s vital to share the surprises within the wares with the one you love Remember the sweet things in life are not just limited to candy, so take time to explore fruits as well Dip grapes in chocolate and powdered sugar for a treat both of you will enjoy

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

There are two sides to ever y love stor y and yours is only half complete Your new par tner will pen the other half and his contributions to the plot line will only sweeten the tale. Don’t let the twists and turns get in the way of a happy ending. He or she could be The One.

Cancer ( June 21 - July 22)

You are not always the most sensitive of sor ts, but this month, you may want to make a special effor t for the one you love. Have you been tak ing him for granted recently? If so, Valentine’s Day is a great time to make it up to him. Show him a good time it ’s a great reminder of how much you care.

Leo ( July 23 - August 22)

You have an enormous hear t, Leo, and you stop at nothing to show love to your par tner However, no one on the planet (aside from another Leo) can ever hope to measure up to your over-the-top expressions of affection Remember, even simple gestures are sweet Show your appreciation

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

You always put ever yone else first, but this Valentine’s Day is all about you! Feb 14 will be a luck y day and you will be treated to an assor tment of surprises that you can only imagine A new relationship may be on the horizon Are you ready for it?

Libra (September 23 - Oc tober 22)

You tend to like things to be fair and balanced, but on Valentine’s Day, all bets are off. If you want to indulge your hopeless romantic side, go for it. If not, that ’s fine too. Only you can make the holiday turn out the way you want it to. What is your hear t ’s desire?

Scorpio (Oc tober 23 - November 21)

You are about to be bitten by the love bug this month and when it happens, it will feel as if a weight has been lifted from your hear t. Will you find a new romantic interest or discover a new hobby that will make you happy? I t ’s unclear but your life will suddenly have new purpose

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

Love songs say so much so use the medium to show others how you feel about them However, it ’s impor tant to choose your song carefully because it will be a recurring theme for your relationship beyond Valentine’s Day Will you stick with a classic or choose something cheesy?

Capricorn (December 22 - Januar y 19)

Hear t Day will be a bag of mixed blessings Old friends will want to reconnec t and new associates will reach out How will you determine who to see and who to reschedule? You could have worse problems than being wanted by so many, but privately you wish you could spread out the love over time. a
