Hello December!

What does December mean to you? For me, it means lots of family time, warm boots, fuzz y scar ves, festive music, twink le lights, fresh clean snow and coz y fires in the fireplace. While fall is my favorite season, I do love waking up to a winter wonder ful especially if I don’t have to go out in it!

Since becoming a mom, the holidays have taken on new magic Witnessing the joy of the season through my daughter ’s eyes has been the greatest gift And holiday traditions mean that much more One of my favorites is changing into comfy pajamas and loading up the car for our annual holiday light display tour There are so many wonder ful (and over the top) lighting displays in and around our area We bring a bag of popcorn and turn up the holiday music It ’s fun for the entire family from the youngest on up

What are some of your favorite holiday traditions? I’d love to hear about them Email me anytime at ambouthot@the-papers com bonus points if you include photos!

While the hustle and bustle of this season can be stressful, I hope you have a chance to slow down and enjoy some of it After all, ‘tis the season for making memories and spending time with loved ones

Shoe Styles You’ll Need in Your Closet This Winter

Flip-flop season is long gone, but it may not be the right season for your old combat boots, either. From gaudy glitter to sleek, pointed toes, this winter ’s shoe st yles are bolder than ever. To stay on top of this season’s trends, shop for these foot fashions:

10 glo s december 2018 G L A M + S T Y L E | B e a u t y , F a s h i o n + S p a

Red

Add a little pop of color to your wardrobe with a red accent shoe They ’ll pair per fec tly with holiday outfits, too

Accessorized Shoes

Nothing is off limits this winter You’ll see some wildly decorated shoes, decked out in jewels, glitter, sequins, giant bows, fringe and even feathers.

Business-Inspired

If you’d wear it to work, you should wear it out in public We’re talk ing patent leather, pointed-toed shoes and chunk y heals, in whites, blacks and browns

Mid-Calf Boots

If you’re not into the sk in-tight k nee highs, you’ll be glad to see this looser alternative. Stores will be carr ying slouchy boots that only go half way up your thigh, leaving a bit of room to breathe.

Cowboy-Inspired Boots

This look may horrify you or delight you, but you’ll notice some foot fashions this season that resemble cowboy boots.

Chunky Heals

Platform Shoes

You probably noticed platform sneakers mak ing their way back in style this summer and fall, but the same trend will make its presence k nown in these colder months, from casual sneakers to platform boots

g

Many ladies will be thankful this shoe trend is rolling over from last year. Knee highs go for hundreds in stores, so be sure to get use out of them again this winter.

Brown

Regardless of the style of shoe, you’ve got to have a staple brown flat or heal In stores and online, you’ll notice tons of adorable brown booties and flats, as well as taller k nee-highs

S ilver

This is another trend that has been around for about a year now, and we can’t complain better a chunk y heal than a stiletto in the snow this winter

Remember y shoes from prom? Let s hope you didn’t throw them out because they ’ll likely resemble what you’ll see in stores this season. Flats and heals alike will be studded out in silver per fec t for the upcoming holidays

Wild Patterns. Walk ing through the mall, you’ll see anything from zebraprint platform sneakers to snake-print stilettos not the easiest to spor t in the winter, but they sure are cute. a

Christiana Danielle

For t Wayne native Christiana Danielle made her singing talent widely known when she appeared on NBC’s The Voice earlier this year. In addition to music, she plans to continue to explore other areas of interest and live her life staying true to herself Encouraged by her parents, Christiana began singing at church as a ver y young child and said music was an avenue of worship growing up.

Christiana said she has been positively influenced in various areas of her life by several people “My greatest role model in music is Nina Simone, ” she said. “I love her boldness and how unashamed she was to be authentic to her ar tistr y and her beliefs. My role model in life is my mother. She is the strongest woman I k now and the most resilient. I admire her boldness, confidence and hard work ethic. She always wants the best for me, and she, paired with my father, are my rock-solid suppor t system ”

In the immediate future, Christiana plans to explore her musical talents and who she sees herself being as an ar tist. “Before the show, I never thought that this would be my reality, ” she said. “Now, I am dreaming out loud and exploring what that looks and feels like ”

Aside from music, she also plans to eventually pursue a career in social work “My long-term plan is to get my Master ’s in social work and go on to get my Ph D to go into research for black mental health, ” she said “ While pursuing my educational goals, I still want to sing and make music that matters I firmly believe that I will be able to pair my passions of social work and singing I don’t have all the answers as to how but I k now that it is what I’m called to do ”

Christiana has undoubtedly become a role model for other young women, but that ’s not been her initial intention “I don’t necessarily aspire to be someone’s role model, ” she said “I aspire to live a life so authentic to who I am that it encourages others to do the same for their own lives I want k ids to k now that ever yone has their own calling and gifts I want to encourage them to explore what those callings and gifts are and relentlessly pursue them. I want to live in such a way that it triggers the light bulb for someone else to see that they CAN do what they want to do while simultaneously being true to themselves.” a

Jesse Randolph

Jesse Randolph is a 13-year-old student at Nor well Middle School who used to be painfully shy. But, thanks to her affiliation with the Job’s Daughters Bethel No. 8 at the Waynedale Masonic Lodge in For t Wayne, she has come out of her shell and has blossomed into a poised young lady with a passion for others

“I got involved with Job’s Daughters when I was 10-years-old, ” she said “I had a relative who was par t of the organization, as well as a friend so I have been around it all of my life ”

Job’s Daughters International is a youth group for young women ages 10 to 20 who want to learn leadership sk ills, ser ve the community and make friendships they will have for the rest of their lives They assist their lodge with a number of events throughout the year while gaining the life sk ills they will need for future success

“I t ’s a great place to meet new people I t really is like having a bunch of sisters, ” she said

Central to the Job’s Daughters philanthropic effor ts is the organization’s work with HIKE (Hearing Impaired Kid’s Endowment) that provides assistive devices for those in need Jesse and her fellow “daughters” hold car washes and bake sales in order to raise funds for HIKE, as well as solicit donations from various clubs and businesses throughout the community Jesse is currently the Honor Queen at her Bethel and has helped to raise over $7,500 for the charity

“HIKE means a lot to me I have a grandfather who had a lot of hearing problems, and I remember how cool it was when he was able to hear me for the first time, so I like being able to help others hear as well as they can, ” she said

Jesse has come a long way since her first Job’s Daughters meeting when she gave herself a bloody nose and was too afraid to speak up in public But now, the daughter of Br yon and Angie Arnold said she has overcome her shyness a little and can now speak at lodges full of members to repor t on the work her Bethel is doing

“I t has also helped me in school when I have to go in front of the class and speak, ” she said “I’m still shy, but it ’s not as bad In fac t, it ’s a lot better ”

Thanks for all you do Jesse! Keep up the great work. a

Any travel aficionado has a list of must-visit spots: ultimate trips that can take years of planning, time and funds. We spoke to three local women who have gone on their bucket list trips. Here’s where they went.

India

When Faith Van Gilder and her husband visited India in April 2017, they opted for a tour

“(Our guide) spoke not just about what we were seeing but about the geopolitical histor y of the countr y, the par tition when it divided from Pak istan, ” said Van Guilder, of Hunter town “ We learned so much about religion.”

Faith: Faith VanGuilder and her husband, Dave, on the Ganges River

In fac t, she named a religious ceremony as the most memorable moment of the two-week trip: Varanasi, one of Hinduism’s seven sacred cities and India’s oldest city, is on the Ganges River The Hindu belief moksha says they can end their reincarnation process if they die in Varanasi

Bodies which are rubbed with clarified oil, wrapped in white linen, and covered in marigolds are cremated there and released into the Ganges Families put the body on a wooden pyre with clarified ghee, a sor t of butter that makes the flame burn hot and quick ly, Van Guilder said

“I t goes on 24/7, ” she said “Ever y day of the year, they do these cremations The family watched vigil, and they sweep the ashes into the river, and the nex t one comes out The priests are doing yoga and prayers at sunrise, and it ’s just absolutely amazing ”

Giraffe Manor

When K ayla Henderson went to Africa last fall, it was her four th trip to the continent and her first trip to Giraffe Manor

“I t ’s the coolest place on ear th, ” she said.

Located in Nairobi, Kenya, Giraffe Manor is a 12-suite bed and breakfast Accommodating up to 29 guests, the manor on 12 acres of private land has a low staff-to-guest ratio But that ’s not the reason Henderson’s two-day stay at Giraffe Manor was simply not long enough

No, that would be because of the wild giraffes that roam the proper ty a few times a day The manor is best-k nown for its breakfasts with giraffes, which was Henderson’s favorite par t of the experience The breakfast nook has nearly floor-to-ceiling windows that open, and the giraffes’ heads fit easily inside

“ You’re sitting there, having a simple breakfast in what feels like your home, and there’s just a massive giraffe head in the window, ” said Henderson, of For t Wayne “I t ’s hard to eat breakfast at that point because they kept cutting in front of your face ”

The animals can greet guests in their rooms, too

“Seeing them at your window, ” she said, “opening your cur tains, and there’s a giraffe head waiting for you to feed him it ’s spec tacular.”

If you’re interested in planning your bucket list trip, consider enlisting the help of a travel agent. Here are a few reasons why:

1. There is no do-over for a vacation gone wrong. Travel agents listen to your needs, make suggestions, and adjust your itinerary so you are making the most out of your memorable trip

U.S. Coast-to-Coast RV Trip

Christie Bowen developed a love for travel as a k id, when she would sometimes travel with her dad for work. When he died in 2006, she thought nurturing that love would be a good way to honor his memor y.

Since then, she has traveled internationally but always figured she’d save a U.S. road trip for retirement, when she had the time and funds to devote to such a lengthy endeavor. But in the midst of transitioning out of her job and into graduate school, she found the per fec t window for a season of travel, from April to July 2014.

Bowen and her then-boyfriend/now-fiancé split the R V trip into two par ts They spent a month traveling from For t Wayne east to Tennessee, Georgia and up the east coast to Maine. They dipped into Canada’s Niagara Falls, and then they returned home.

2. They can save you a lot of time and stress by doing the leg- work for you. Forget sifting through pages and pages of online research, travel agents have this information and do the hard part for you so you can enjoy yourself and think about what to pack

3. They can save you a lot of money and add value to your experience. Even though a travel agent may charge a fee, the value you receive will be bigger than you paid They can access discounts and amenities that you could not on your own

4. Like any professional, they simply know more than you do. They can recommend a private guide instead of a ship excursion, or ensure you get the room with the best view, for example

They left for the second, two-month por tion of the trip a week later : They traveled through the M idwest to Utah, down to Arizona and up the West Coast As they returned east, they hit Montana and Wyoming

Her two favorite spots were national parks, one per coast In Utah’s Zion National Park, Bowen hiked The Narrows of Zion Canyon

“ You end up between two canyon walls in two and three feet of water ” in the V irgin River, she said. In this sec tion of the hike, there is no dir t trail; the river is the trail.

Out east, Bowen names Maine’s Acadia National Park as her favorite.

“ We visited right at the end of spring, ” she said “ The weather was beautiful The colors were beautiful ” a

Tips on How to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

Maintaining a healthy lifest yle is hard enough as it is, let alone during the holiday season. Although we may want to go into the season with a saintlike attitude of resisting all the sugar y and salt y temptations, that will only set us up for failure.

As a third-year PhD student in health education and an instruc tor of Nutrition & Fitness and Nutrition for Weight Management at the University of Toledo, I’m frequently asked how to stay healthy during the holiday seasons. You may have already heard some of the tips I’m about to share, but hopefully there will be at least one or two suggestions that can help you stay happy and healthy this time of the year

1. Be realistic. Don’t tr y to avoid all the treats during the holidays because you’ll end up feeling deprived. Instead, focus on moderation. Tr y eating a smaller por tion of the foods you love, and tr y to include some healthier options to help fill you up.

2. Make a rule for yourself. This may sound silly but mak ing a rule for yourself may help you stay accountable For example, one rule that I make with myself for gatherings is that I pick two dishes I really want a ser ving of and the rest of my food is healthy Another rule that works for many people is avoiding sweets throughout the day so that they can have something sweet in the evening But remember – moderation is key

3. Be the healthy hero. Yes, we all k now that it ’s fun to bake, but it can be difficult to find healthy dishes at most holiday gatherings Instead of bringing a desser t (like ever yone else), do yourself, and other health-conscious par ty goers, a favor by bringing a healthy dish This will also give you something to munch on besides cook ies Hummus with veggie sticks, a fruit tray and shrimp cocktail are all great options

4. Swap to save calories. You can cut down on calories, fat and even cholesterol by swapping out cer tain ingredients in your baked goods For example, you can substitute either ¾ cup of vegetable oil (such as olive or safflower), ¾ cup of pumpk in puree, or ¾ cup prune puree for ever y 1 cup of butter. When using applesauce in place of butter, it is advisable to replace half of the amount of butter in the recipe with applesauce. Yogur t can be substituted for butter using a 1:1 ratio; however, since yogur t has more moisture than butter, it ’s preferable that the recipe being used only call for 1 cup of butter or less.

5. Fit in Fitness. Although you may not be able to make it to the gym as much as you’d like (if at all), there are easy ways to include physical ac tivity into the holiday season Walk the mall once or twice before shopping to get more steps in On the same note, don’t waste time look ing for a close park ing spot; you’ll get more steps in and likely save time by park ing far ther away Also, you can find countless free workout videos on YouTube; one channel that I like is Fitness Blender.

6.

List it like Santa.

Santa is on to something when he makes a list and checks it twice Mak ing a list of all the things you have to do (or buy) can help reduce some of the stress the holidays bring When you make a list, you’re able to put down all of those things you still need to do so you don’t stress out about forgetting something Additionally, mak ing a list of gifts you need to buy can help prevent you from buying more than necessar y and reduce post-holiday financial stress a

Getting a Handle on Holiday S pending

Dear S anta,

I’ve decided that this year I want to help you And no, I don’t mean cleaning up after your reindeer, sorr y. What I’m gonna do, however, is lighten the load on your Christmas Eve’s world-wide journey by spreading the word that holiday shopping can be savings-oriented, so folks will buy a lot of their own stuff rather than depending on you to carr y the full load Below are some tips:

• Tak ing a holiday job can ease the burden of overspending.

• Set price limits for those you plan to gift –relatives, friends, co-workers and obligator y people like the newspaper carrier, hair stylist, deliver y drivers, etc Put the amount you intend to spend nex t to each person’s name and stick to it.

• Don’t forget to budget for miscellaneous expenses: food, haircuts, gas, generic ex tra gifts (in case you forget to buy for someone or receive an unexpec ted gift), etc.

• Check and compare prices with your cell phone Installing a budgeting app on your phone is an excellent way to track your spending Setting aside a little each month for the holidays is ideal.

• Buying elec tronics? Save a bundle by gifting last year ’s version

• Take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals Order in plenty of time and look for free shipping codes and ex tra savings

• Save yourself some worr y about overspending by paying your monthly bills first and using online bank ing to keep track of your accounts Stick to your budget by refraining from eating out, buying yourself items that you simply want, going to concer ts and other big splurges until the holidays are over

• Pay attention to the newspaper, online and T V ads, and take advantage of them in a timely manner

• Don’t wait until the last minute to do all the shopping; this leads to frustration if you can’t find the items you need, which could have been purchased days or weeks earlier

• Stick to a cash-only method; using a credit card often leads to overspending If using a credit card, use a card that offers rewards or cash back Or star t a holiday account in Januar y for nex t year

• Why not make some gifts yourself? Good ideas include mak ing holiday cook ies for your k ids’ teachers, framing new photos for the grandparents or mak ing a gift cer tificate for household chores or treats

That ’s it, Santa – the rest is up to you! a

Deck the Halls glo style

Deck the halls with… holiday joy inside and out.

What is Christmas without a home that reflec ts the hear t-warming sentiments the season brings? Local retailers show you how to incorporate the season’s hottest trends in holiday décor with special and intentional touches

Natasha Gilgen with A Per fec t Blend in Bluffton has the recipe for pulling together various elements into a central theme. Old World is trending, she said, as “wood ornaments and decor with Old World European charm are coming back ”

Similarly, she calls for incorporating neutral colored Christmas into the mix. M iniature trees are on trend, too, and don’t forget the details. Gilgen recommends decorating with wood ornaments to make a neutral color scheme

From here, it ’s all about the details. “Grapevine is mak ing a strong comeback replacing evergreen wreaths, ” she said. Galvanized containers, she added, are tak ing the place of tree sk ir ts. Eucalyptus, silk flowers and a touch of spark le are sure to make an ordinar y display ex traordinar y.

Speak ing of dazzling, Joshua Franz with The Grainer y Company in Decatur is all about channeling the peaceful beauty of Mother Nature and bringing it indoors. In other words, create your own version of a Winter Wonderland.

“Using a winter look allows the décor to remain up past Christmas, giving you more bang for the buck, ” he said For example, lighting up snow globes can create a sense of warmth and coziness Plus, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes so you can play with that element.

32 glo s december 2018 F E A T U R E S | I n s i d e Y o u r W a l l s

Continuing that theme, he said you can’t go wrong with bringing a whimsical moose or other animal figurines into the fold The same goes with red berries, which evoke a sense of rustic holiday beauty Last, according to Franz, “inspirational wall signs continue to remain popular and are easy to change out ever y season ”

Still hungr y for ideas? Generally speak ing, the modern farmhouse look we’ve seen popular this year is still having a moment Just search Etsy and you’ll find inspiration in a variety of forms This season is all about patterns inspired by nature Fir trees, deer, twigs, snowflakes, stars and feathers are all fair game Wood is playing a suppor tive role, too, in the form of wooden trays, candle holders, lanterns, twigs, ornaments, etc. Designers are also leaning towards warm hues, flickering candles and garlands galore.

What about the staple of holiday decorating, the Christmas tree? Don’t be afraid to re-imagine the classic pine-and-ornament Christmas tree Channel your inner child with non-traditional tree vignettes You’re sure to make an impression with motifs like fair ytale wonder, snowflakes and woodland birds. And don’t forget the moss! Drape a few sheets across your mantle and incorporate it into your dining table centerpiece for an ex tra ser ving of farmhouse charm.

The only thing left is to add the laughter and cheer of friends and family a

Successful Co -Parenting

While marriage is intended to be a union that will last forever, realistically, some may eventually end in separation or divorce for various reasons And when children are involved, the family unit becomes drastically changed and will never be the same as before; however, it is possible to successfully co-parent the children even though the marriage has ended.

Communicate openly and honestly.

Cour tney Heiser is a divorcee who now co-parents her son with her ex-husband “Successful parenting doesn’t have to happen under one roof, ” she said “ Transparent communication is essential in any parenting construc t, but in a shared custody situation, parents might have to work a little harder at it. In a healthy coparenting relationship, a consistent conversation means both parents are deeply involved and will have a much better chance at communicating effectively when larger issues arise ”

Megan Urbahns is also co-parenting her three k ids with her ex-husband She believes their children are adapting well because of their openness and willingness to communicate together, in spite of no longer being married

more rules, while one is a little more free-spirited in our approach I t requires ego surrender and ability to compromise.”

Tr y your best to keep the kids first Eggiman explained that children will initially tend to ac t out in one way or another once the separation or divorce has occurred. “Kids will usually either ac t out with bad behavior or tr y to be per fec t to smooth things out, ” she said “Getting into trouble is a reac tion to their anxiety and is also a way to get attention ”

“People always say, ‘put the children first, ’ and while we all k now that ’s the right thing to do, it ’s hard to do that in the midst of a painful divorce, ” said Heiser “ That ’s why it ’s impor tant to have a good suppor t system Relying on friends, family, a therapist, etc , and using them as a sounding board will give you a healthy space to unpack your hur t ”

“Both parents need to have the same goals in continuing to raise the k ids, ” she said “ We tr y to remain friends the best we can We find a common ground in raising the k ids and have a weekly check-in to make sure we’re all on the same page ”

Accept obstacles and face them head on.

I t can be devastating to split a family apar t, but accepting the issues that caused the divorce or separation is impor tant to moving for ward “ These situations are so nuanced, but for me the biggest struggle was learning to accept our ver y different styles of parenting, ” said Heiser “One of us adheres to a more defined schedule and has

Sometimes divorced parents need to come to terms with the fac t that they will indeed miss out on some moments and they cannot always be in charge 100 percent of the time Letting go of details and not tr ying to be in constant control is integral to maintaining a peaceful environment for the k ids, according to Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor Jan Eggiman

“Children are negatively impac ted when parents disagree on issues and argue with one another, ” she said By effec tively communicating and being open to each other ’s opinions or childrearing style can minimize the psychological damage on the k ids.

Urbahns agreed that while the first instinc t is to keep the children’s needs number one, it ’s not always easy when dealing with an ended marriage “ We tr y to keep the focus off of us and put it back on the k ids, ” she said “I also tr y to take my own emotions out of the equation and think about what ’s best for the k ids ”

Impossible as it may seem, co-parenting works for those who can rebuild trust in the other parent “I t ’s more than just not saying negative things about the other person in front of the child, ” said Heiser “Recognizing the other parent ’s value, honoring their strengths as a parent, even if they differ from yours, and voicing that to your child/children, will ultimately give them a sense of harmony and stability in both environments ” a

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

r e Yo u Aw a r e ?

Holiday Edition A

Christmas permeates ever ything in D ecember. There’s no getting away from it, so you may think you know ever ything about the holiday Think again! Here are some things you may not know about the holiday and its traditions.

Mistletoe

How romantic, right? Did you k now it literally means “dung twig”? I t springs out of bird droppings on trees and requires a host tree in order to sustain itself. Nex t time you find yourself smooching under the mistletoe, remember that you are standing beneath a parasitic poop twig

Santa

Coca Cola played a huge par t in Santa’s image He used to look a lot less jolly (and even a little spook y) until the company hired an illustrator in 1931 to create images of Santa for magazine adver tisements, and the warm and friendly Santa we k now today was born.

12 Days of Christmas

Xmas

Say it ain’t so! Rudolph, the Christmas icon, is an adver tising gimmick created for Montgomer y Ward to lure shoppers in 1939.

If you listen closely to the song lyrics, you will discover that there are 364 gifts exchanged, one for each day of the year leading up to Christmas.

While there is some controversy around using this abbreviation, it ac tually dates back to the 16th centur y X represents the Greek letter for Chi, or the first letter of the word “Christ.” European Christians began using the Chi as a symbolic abbreviation for Christ. a

Pisces (Februar y 19 - March 20)

Bright and shiny new toys are great, but what you really long for is something hear tfelt like a romantic poem written by the one you love, a photo album of memories, or anything handmade Drop a few hints You might be surprised this holiday season

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

You would rather have an experience as opposed to one more outfit to wear or another gadget to clutter up the drawers. The greatest gift for an Aries is the one that leaves a happy memor y to remember for years to come like tickets to the hot new musical or winter spor t, dance lessons or an ar t class.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

You always k now when someone sk imps in the gift depar tment, and while you appreciate thriftiness, there are times to save and times to spend. The only way to ensure that you will get what you want is to make a list, check it twice and then sur f around to find the best price!

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Cancer ( June 21 - July 22)

Because they are all about family, the best gift to give a Cancer is one that cannot be bought Time together, an heirloom they will cherish or a favorite photo is a present that will bring the past alive or create an experience today that will last for many tomorrows. Get creative!

Leo ( July 23 - August 22)

Lavish your love on a Leo by being generous in the giving depar tment! That does not mean spending a lot of money, but it does mean mak ing sure each detail says, “I was think ing of you.” Leos love attention so even if the gift is simple, go all out on the wrapping, ribbon and gift tag. They will love it!

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

What do you get the person who seemingly has ever ything? V irgos are among the toughest people to buy for and expensive presents often make them feel uncomfor table As natural problem solvers, they love gifts that can make their lives better or easier, such as an organizational system

Libra (September 23 - Oc tober 22)

Libras like to look good and are always on trend Cater to their sense of style with a great bottle of wine, an exotic per fume, the hottest accessor y (designer, of course) or a box of gourmet truffles!

Scorpio (Oc tober 23 - November 21)

Although they are often sentimental, the per fec t gift for a Scorpio often seems counterintuitive to the holiday season They love books on true crime, vampires or an ar tistic set of Tarot cards Don’t worr y that they are turning to the dark side, they are simply curious about the more mysterious side of life a
