Title of piece: Christmas Elf

What inspired this piece?

This picture is special. I was giving my grandson, Ryan, art lessons, just like my mom did for me when I was around the same age, 9 years old. I drew the background with him. Then, I had to draw him a pretty elf to wrap some of his presents this Christmas.

Want to put your art on our front cover? Give it a glo!

To submit your entry, send art as an e-mail attachment to ambouthot@the-papers.com or send a production-ready image on a CD via mail to: glo Magazine, Attention: Amber Bouthot, PO Box 188, Milford, IN 46542.

The Nitty Gritty: glo front covers are open to female artists. Submissions from all original 2D media (digital art photographs are OK) are welcome.

cover artist Elizabeth Stavitzke

Where do you draw inspiration from for your artwork?

My grandchildren and my mama, Mary Elizabeth (who passed in 2001), are my heart and inspiration. I dedicate this beautiful happy elf to my mother. She was such a beautiful, artistic person.

Why do you read glo?

I read glo because they love and support artists like me, and that’s a wonderful gift all year round.

Where can we find your artwork?

I give my works of art as gifts. I also post my art pieces for sale on Facebook marketplace. a

Artwork must be photographed at a high-resolution (300+ dpi) for reproduction. Cover art selections are made at the discretion of glo staff. For cover placement, the artist will receive credit and added exposure via introductory copy and published photograph in a question and answer section.

Cover art is cropped approximately to 10” wide x 13” high. Submitted cover art should be sized as 10.5” wide x 13.25” tall and, when possible, please allow 4.5” at top of artwork for glo masthead placement. The art chosen will confer rights to the cover image only as it relates to the publication and glo. The artist shall retain all other rights.

From the executive editor

I am dreaming of a white... winter! For as long as I can remember, I have been pro-snow. While I know that it causes hazardous road conditions and a myriad of other issues for people, I simply cannot get over the beauty of it—the quiet way it blankets the earth and sparkles in the sun. It’s simply magical. Sure, I am not a big fan of the cold weather, but the white stuff? Bring it on.

As I write this ahead of the deadline for this issue, we are expecting our first snowfall of the season, and my 3-year-old daughter is elated. For her, snow means getting out the snow gear and making snow angels with her daddy. One of the best things about motherhood is sharing the things I enjoyed as a kid with my own kids. Sledding, snowball fights and snow angels are just a few of the snow-related memories I have from my childhood.

1-866-580-1138

Another fun memory? My dad was the master of snow forts. My childhood home had a relatively big back yard with a fence that somehow always caught the wind just right to create giant snow drifts—the perfect setting for the ultimate fort. We would spend hours digging and carving until we had created a multi-room snow palace (or at least it seemed that way when I was little).

What are some of your favorite winter memories? I would love to hear from you. Email me at ambouthot@the-papers.com, or message us on Facebook.

As we wrap up 2019 and head into a new decade, I look forward to bringing you inspiring content. If you have a story idea, send it in. We do this for you, after all.

Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season.

FASHION PREVIEW Winter

As we say goodbye to fall, the days become colder and shorter. But have no fear, Old Man Winter doesn’t have to cramp your style. Local boutique owners show you how to look your best this season. Turn up the volume on style with these expert help.

“I feel like many of the trends are actually quite practical and also super cute — more fit ted looks are coming back, as well. Think wrap dresses, fit and flare, high waisted denim, the tucked-in look, knotted look — anything that gives you a shape,” she said.

In addition to figure flattering looks, texture, patterns and layers are all the rage. Turtlenecks, blazers, ragged hem denim and boot cut denim are having a moment, too.

Megan Oliphant with The Local in Fort Wayne said these trends are popular because they’re accessible and versatile. Additionally, she recommends pulling in satin fabric, especially a satin skirt paired with a turtleneck or a chunky sweater, with a fashion jacket and jewel tones. Voila...ohso-feminine and instant style points.

Susan Johnson with Susan

said

seeing a mix of new and returning trends. For example, puffy jackets are hot, but they’re more form fitting this year. In year’s past, they tended to be bulkier, which wasn’t universally flattering. Many of them are reversible, so you can have a little fun mixing it up.

It’s all in the details. Red, white and black dominate the color pallette, as well as animal prints. Metallics and faux fur on jackets and collars are popular statement looks. And athleisure is here to stay, as evidenced by leggings’ staying power, Johnson said. Pair them with sweater coats and a statement necklace, and you’ll pack a mean style punch.

Lyn-Marees

8 | DECEMBER GLO 2019 | GLAM + STYLE | FASHION
Emma Marie Metcalf, owner and stylist with Lyn-Maree’s Boutique in Auburn, said form meets function this season. Fashions she’s

Other on-trend looks include plaid. From schoolgirl uniforms to classic Scottish tartans to ’90s grunge, there’s a statement for any woman. Pair it with a form-fitting long coat or jacket and you’re sure to capture the attention of the room. A gold chain-link necklace is the perfect finishing touch and another standout piece of the season.

A gal’s gotta look good from head to toe, right? Boots are here to stay, but not the typical ankle or knee-high ones we’ve seen the past few winters. This season, it’s time to be a little edgy and look to staples of motorcycle culture. Leather or faux leather moto boots are the way to go to get that “I mean business” look.

Feeling a little more daring? Lingerie is not just reserved for the nighttime. Channel 1990s vixen Madonna and wear your unmentionables on the outside for a touch of feminine sex appeal. By day, pair a retrovintage silhouette with lace and baby-doll detailing.

In short, winter 2019-20 is set to be a season of contrasts. From basic turtlenecks to ‘90s grunge, there’s room for plenty of experimentation as we head into the new year. Own it, girl! a

During the holiday season, festive often feels frantic. After the parties, school programs, family get togethers and more, setting aside time for self-care during this busy season can help you relax, recharge and regain the holiday spirit.

“Knowing it’s okay to give yourself at least an hour of not having to check off a to-do list will make you a happier person, so you can pour that same thing into others,” said Brittany Raines, esthetician at Southwest Hair & Day Spa.

Self Care During the Holidays

While self-care certainly isn’t limited to spa and beauty treatments, these services often have a compounding effect of allowing for rest and making women feel better about themselves.

Although lack of time is often an excuse for not prioritizing self-care, Fort Wayne’s beauty and spa professionals beg to differ. If you have 90 minutes (or even less), they can help you squeeze in a reprieve from the hustle and bustle, while helping you look and feel your best.

THE QUICKEST FIXES

Michelle Childs-Fernandez, owner of the Hair Department, Inc. and Art 22 Academy of Cosmetology, recommends Art 22’s facial bar, which offers a 30-minute express facial that includes exfoliation, treatment mask and toner for $20.

She also recommends blowouts, which ensures a break from early-morning hair styling and several “good hair days.” Depending on your hair type, blowouts range from $35 to $55.

For those schedules that just don’t have room during business hours, indulging in higher-end products for at-home treatments can be a good option. Massage Envy’s Amy Dollier recommends the Cy-Me Hydrating sheet mask and Hydrating Foot Mask.

MORE INVOLVED TREATMENTS

Among Childs-Fernandez’s clients, one of the most popular options for self-care is dermaplaning, along with either a lactic acid peel or hydrating facial. She says that this 75-minute treatment improves skins tone and texture, removes dull

skin and creates a nearly-instant glow.

Among Raines’s clients, a popular self-care service is herbology polish, a one-hour, full-body treatment (available with a wrap or a massage), which uses Chinese herbs to smooth, exfoliate and hydrate dry winter skin.

If you’ve got a bit more time, Dollier recommends Massage Envy’s hydrating Jan Marini Facial and Micro-Infusion for a general healthy glow, or a series of chemical peels to reduce finelines and wrinkles.

MASSAGE THERAPY

Whether it’s a quick 30 minutes or a 90-minute full body massage, it’s difficult to dispute the relaxing powers of massage. Whether you choose a deep-tissue, Swedish or therapeutic massage, Childs-Fernandez notes that massage helps relax tired muscles, relieve headaches, and even boosts the immune system.

Take Dollier’s advice and spend about an hour (out of the 744 in December) to devote to selfcare: “Most of us put so much emphasis on everyone else we often forget to take care of ourselves. Just like fueling a vehicle it is important that we re-fuel ourselves.” a

Janell Lane describes herself as a 35-year-old millennial who is on fire for Christ. “My relationship with him drives every decision I make in life,” she said. “I’ve learned everything good isn’t my assignment, and I am committed to staying within God’s will for my life and his timeline. I don’t want anything that isn’t blessed or anointed by him.”

Born and raised in Southeast Fort Wayne, Lane moved away briefly, returning in 2010 to accept a role serving local at-risk youth. She is the founder of Courageous Healing, an organization focused on minority mental health and the director of Southeast Community Strategy and Relations at the Parkview Community Partner Development Center. She’s also mom to two children, 4-year-old son Jace and 2-year-old daughter Nova, and the wife of Aaron Lane.

“I work alongside my husband in every aspect of life, and we view both our marriage and work through spiritual lenses,” she said. “We view vocation as ministry and approach it as such, and we feel as though we are a family on a mission.”

In her role at Parkview, she creates strategy to better serve Fort Wayne’s Southeast community. She also supports, informs, connects and aligns community efforts of the many amazing non-profits that serve this community. The center serves non-profit organizations, providing personal and professional development, events and initiatives focused on serving the community, and uplifting and empowering community leaders.

“We connect organizations around areas of potential collaboration. We also convene key community stakeholders to maximize all assets necessary for resolving issues that plague the community,” Lane said.

Courageous Healing, Inc. is a non-profit that provides mental health services and support, specifically to minority populations.

“We provide individual, couples and group therapy, in addition to innovative, more brief interventions,” she said. “One of our greatest passions is providing points of access to quality care for populations who historically haven’t had access or have had poor experiences upon accessing services. Our hope is our center can someday set precedence and see more like ours become common nationally, as other cities and states also continue to work on developing more culturallysensitive solutions to addressing the growing mental health crisis.”

Lane admits she doesn’t have a lot of advice for making it all work. Oftentimes, she battles the feeling that she is dropping one or more balls, disappointing people or just missing the mark.

“I’m still working on navigating healthy boundaries and reminding myself that home is my first ministry,” she said.

The focus for Lane is to always remember why she is doing it all.

“It isn’t for the approval or acknowledgment of people, so I can’t get caught up in competition, striving to meet expectations, titles or critiques/criticisms,” she said.

Lane’s best advice for herself is to be fully present where she is, focused on whatever the task or person is at hand and that it is enough. “I pour out all of me every day in service and I do my best to make sure my husband and children don’t get the leftovers,” Lane said. a

COMMUNITY FOCUS | HE GLOws

It is a phenomenal day when an idea comes to fruition and makes the hopes and dreams of many others come true at the same time. That is exactly what David Buuck was able to do through the development of CASS Housing. His contributions to the community have transformed the lives of many individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

For the past 10 years, Buuck has been working alongside people with developmental disabilities and their families. As a part of this, he and his wife also lived in an intentional residential community for adults with disabilities called the Share Foundation. Their work culminated in the development of a new program that could help families right here in northeast Indiana—this program is CASS Housing.

“After three and a half years of work, launching our first home in January 2019 was a dream come true for our first three residents and their families,” Buuck explained, “It’s a remarkably humbling experience to sit down with a family and for them to open up to complete strangers about their hopes and fears for their adult children.”

Many families of individuals with developmental disabilities wonder what will happen to their loved one when they are no longer able to care for them. “You’re not alone,” Buuck encouraged, “The vast majority of people with disabilities and their families feel incredibly isolated in the struggles that they face. We want to mobilize families and the community to address the massive and growing issues that people with disabilities face.”

CASS Housing addresses these issues by providing individuals with disabilities a customized living situation. It could be a home by itself or a cluster of two to five homes together. Each individual has a steward, chosen by the family, who assists the individuals based on their unique needs.

“We want to open as many homes to assist as many people as possible,” Buuck envisioned, “To think that we could have more than 20 homes in the next few years is possible, but it’s going to take a lot of work, a lot of people and a lot of community involvement to get there.”

Buuck attributes his drive for success to two women: late grandmother Vonna Buuck and wife, Amy Buuck, “I spent countless hours learning how to love watching her (Vonna) interact with those around her,” he reminisced, “My wife, Amy, is the only reason any of this exists. She helps keep my feet on the ground, and I help keep her eyes focused forward.”

“In life, success is all about growth,” Buuck explained, “This can be found in both wins and in failures. The goal is always growth.”

No matter your definition of success, Buuck has definitely been successful in making a huge positive impact on our community.

Situational

AWARENESS

When Greg Wajer arrives to work at Parkview Randallia, he parks his car far from the front door. Sure, it lets him get in extra steps for the day, but mainly, it’s for safety reasons.

“When I come out, I can see what’s around my vehicle,” says Wajer, a lieutenant with Parkview Police and Public Safety.

Wajer teaches classes on situational awareness for Parkview with fellow Parkview lieutenant Tony Knox, who defines situational awareness as simply “healthy paranoia” and being prepared. The topic gains new importance around the holidays, when people may be out and about more often, their arms full of shopping bags and packages stored in the car.

“It’s paying attention to your surroundings,” Wajer says. “Too many people are so busy with emails, text messages and social media, and it’s very easy to get stuck in your phone as you’re walking to your vehicle and not paying attention to what’s going on around you.”

For example, it’s leaving 10 minutes early when you go to the mall so you can park in a safer part of the lot—a spot further back with higher visibility— instead of circling until you find a nearby spot that is also between two view-blocking box trucks and far from any lights.

To help you stay safe as you’re out and about this holiday season, Wajer and Knox shared these tips from their situational awareness class.

• In parking lots, park near the video cameras on top of buildings or light poles. People looking to rob a car or attack someone will know where the cameras are, too, and they’ll avoid those areas.

• “Don’t park near the cart corrals at grocery stores,” Wajer says. People are often near those areas, so someone milling around and looking for a car to break into is less likely to be noticed.

• “Keep your packages in the trunk or out of view,” Knox says.

• “Have Uber drivers roll down the back window so you can reach in and open the door from the outside,” Knox suggests. This lets you know there are no child-safety locks activated. He also says to check the 911 feature on the Uber app, where you can track drivers and see their credentials.

• “If you’re traveling to a large city like Indianapolis, leave your car in a lot outside the city and take an Uber into town,” Knox says. This is safer than street parking in the city

• If you have a GPS in your car, Knox says, don’t program your address as “home.” If someone steals it or your car, they’ll know where you live. Instead, he suggests plugging in the address a few houses away or a nearby intersection.

• Make sure your hands are free and your head is up. “Too many people have bags of stuff in one hand and their nose in a cell phone in the other hand,” Wajer says. “They’re not paying attention. If you look confident, most likely a perpetrator isn’t going to come up to you. If you have your nose buried, you look like a soft target.” a

Picky EATERS

The holiday season is here and with that comes fancy dinners, work parties, potlucks and family gatherings. While breaking bread with your favorite people can be one of life’s simple joys, anxiety over what to make when feeding those with special dietary needs can make things feel complicated. Here are nine tips and tricks for hosting a holiday dinner that everyone can enjoy.

1. Ask for Advice

Who knows best? The person with special dietary needs. Once you have a menu in mind, discuss it with your guests ahead of time and ask how they can be accommodated.

4. Make Simple Swaps

Tossing your veggies with olive oil instead of butter means that the vegans and those with dairy allergies can enjoy them too. Use vegetable stock instead of chicken or beef stock in the side dishes so more people can enjoy them.

5. Leave the Toppings on the Side

Sometimes it’s just one or two ingredients that rule out a dish for those with dietary issues. If you leave the bacon crumble on the side, those who eat meat can still have it, and the vegetarians can eat the dish too.

2. Read Labels

Dairy, gluten and non-vegetarian ingredients are found in many packaged foods. If you are not sure if an ingredient is safe for your party guests, ask the person you’re accommodating or skip it.

3. Don’t Cross-Contaminate

Use separate tongs when grilling meat and veggie burgers to spare the vegetarian foods from meat juice. Don’t bake a nut-free cookie on the same tray you just roasted almonds. Thoroughly wash the strainer in between draining wheat spaghetti noodles and gluten-free ones. Being mindful of opportunities for cross-contamination can lower the risk of serving foods that your guest might not be able to eat.

6. Build a Bowl

Rather than designing a menu with several parts, build a buffet of toppings and let your guests do the rest. From a yogurt parfait brunch to a smoky burrito bowl, there are many options for having a casual meal that is satisfying for everyone. Having a diverse spread of options will allow your guests to create a meal that fits their needs.

7. Serve Delicious Drinks

Even those not drinking alcohol enjoy fancy mock-tails. Include everyone in the festivities by making a pitcher or two of fruit and herb infused waters or a dry bar with seltzer, juices and herbs.

8. Polish Your Sales Pitch

We tend to be wary of foods we cannot easily identify. To encourage everyone to try dif ferent dishes, write the menu on a chalkboard or place a menu card on the table. On your buffet line, label each dish with enticing adjectives and include ingredients. Not only does this encourage a picky eater to try new things, it also helps guests avoid food allergens.

9. Have Fun!

Remember: You don’t have to accommodate your guests for every single dish. If your holiday dinner would not be complete without your grandmother’s Yorkshire pudding, include it. Missing your personal favorites might lower your own enjoyment at the occasion. With a wellplanned dinner, all of your guests can be happy and well fed. a

Barre Classes

Barre is a total body workout, with little to no impact on the body, focusing on small muscle groups with high repetitions. You may be making small, targeted movements, but you will feel those movements working in the form of a good, healthy burn.

“Students will notice improved digestion, increased energy, a minimized risk of injury, a clear mind and a healthier and happier way of life,” said Christina Hoffman from Rebel Yoga. “The most beneficial part in my opinion is the environment that is created. You are spending 45 minutes to one hour with like minded people who are encouraging and supporting you.”

Fitness Guide

As the temperature drops, there’s nothing quite as tempting as cuddling up in your favorite sweats and sipping hot cocoa. And while we’re all for getting cozy this winter, it’s important to find ways to stay active. In this quick guide to winter fitness, we’ll share a few creative—and incredibly fun—ways to get your blood pumping.

Hot Yoga Classes

What better way to warm up this winter than hot yoga? For these classes, the room is heated to help increase flexibility and detoxify the body.

Hoffman shares her advice on avoiding the winter slump and staying consistent with your workouts:

“The best advice I could ever give, is ‘To just start and stay consistent.’ We understand life gets busy, kids get sick, we can get sick and just how easy it is to fall into the trap of ‘I will start Monday.’ I have found that it’s those relationships that students create that keep them accountable. Find a buddy and bring them with you. Make time for yourself, maybe that means getting up early and hitting that 5:30 a.m. class so you know your workout is finished and you are ready to tackle the day.”

Aerial Yoga

If you’ve ever seen aerial yoga in action, it may seem intimidating. Maybe being suspended on hammocks hanging from the ceiling isn’t your ideal workout, but it sure is fun. Plus, the health benefits are endless. Expect to gain flexibility and muscle, as well as relieve stress and tension in bones and muscles. It’s a great activity to do with your girlfriends—and who knows, it may be your new favorite hobby.

Visit Studio Seva or Pranayoga in Fort Wayne this winter to test out aerial yoga.

Surviving the Holidays Without Going Broke

Many of us look forward to the holidays all year. We strive to match the perfect image in our heads: the decorations are flawless; everyone gets along well; the gifts perfectly match our loved ones’ wish lists.

But if we’re honest, there’s often a feeling in the gut that prompts you to ask: How will I afford the holiday of my dreams?

We’ve tapped into expert advice to keep your holiday fantasies from creating money mayhem in the New Year. It turns out some preplanning and self-analysis can help.

Ric Runestad, president and CEO of Runestad Financial Services, said the struggle is real for many. “It’s estimated that the average American family will spend between $700 to $1,000 on Christmas,” he said. “This can constitute a sizable portion of a family’s annual discretionary income.”

Mary Hunt, founder, editor and publisher of the national newsletter Cheapskate Monthly (www.cheapskatemonthly.com), said that along with the visions of sugar plums that dance in our heads, we need to start with an attitude adjustment. In her book, “Debt-proof Your Christmas,” Hunt asks us to consider whether we are treating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or other special holidays as a popularity contest or final examination, rather than a

time of rest, reflection and joy. We ought not associate what we spend with love, and we must manage the funds we do have carefully.

Hunt’s tips for when you are short on cash: Pantry Survival: Go to your pantry, cupboards and freezer to feed your family and use the savings to fund your holidays.

Eat-In: No more fast food or restaurants until after the holidays are over.

Rethink a Habit: For the short-term, eliminate coffee, vending machines snacks, manis and pedis, and work day lunches out.

Get Free Shipping: Amazon has a Prime trial for 30 days you can sample.

Get Your Cash Back: Check out Rakuten cashback, formerly Ebates; Before shopping online or in physical stores, you log in. Read the details when you sign up.

Another key piece of advice: Determine your financial spending limit and don’t exceed it.

“The key to not overspending this holiday season is to set a budget and stick to it. People get into trouble when they refuse to make choices and simply get whatever it is they want,” Hunt said. “A budget can force fiscal discipline on holiday shopping.”

Lastly, remember the reason for the season.

“If people are looking for ways to keep the spirit of the season alive without going broke, it makes sense to ask why we celebrate at all,” Runestad said. “A far more appropriate celebration is found spending time with our loved ones. This activity doesn’t cost a cent and is the true joy of the season.” a

HOLIDAY STAYCATION:

Retail Therapy

Need to finish some holiday shopping?

Downtown offers an array of charming boutiques. Stop by The Find for unique clothing and accessories, or head a little further west to Fancy and Staple, which offers eclectic gifts and more. And who doesn’t love a little snack in their stocking? Don’t forget to make it to Poptique, which dishes up delicious twists on flavored popcorn.

Catch a Show

Join the Fort Wayne Ballet in its annual performance of “The Nutcracker” at the Arts United Center from Dec. 6 through 15. Witness the classic tale live for a one-of-a-kind experience that’s sure to leave you with a few sugarplums dancing in your head.

Take a Tour

Let your inner child take a stroll around The History Center’s Festival of Gingerbread as you relish in the art of finely crafted gingerbread creations. Don’t go hungry though or all of candy will start to look pretty tasty. The events runs through Dec. 15.

A large part of Fort Wayne’s holiday tradition is checking out a can’t-miss spot that houses Santa and His Reindeers’ lighted display across the PNC Building, as well as the Merry Christmas Wreath on the AEP Building. While the lighting celebration is held in November, the displays are visible all season long and are a treat to see.

And while we’re lighting things up around here, we might as well point you in the direction of the Fantasy of Lights at Franke Park. A tad out of the downtown area, the drive-thru display has been going on for 25 years and continues to bring joy to all who visit.

Grab a Bite and a Pint

Escape the winter weather and warm up with the comforting food and atmosphere at JK O’Donnells. Situated within walking distance of many of the events and attractions, enjoy their traditional Irish menu and spirits list while relaxing with the ladies.

Francine’s Friends Lunch with Friends

On Friday, Oct. 11, we joined 1,000 women at Francine’s Friends Annual Lunch with Friends event, which raises funds for mammograms.

All donations to Francine’s Friends Mobile Mammography help women in northeast Indiana receive life-saving mammography services without cost while also honoring the legacy and spirit of Francine Schubert, for whom the non-profit organization was named.

This year’s keynote speaker at the Lunch with Friends event was Donna Packnett, a breast cancer survivor, community volunteer and philanthropist. The event also featured music by Bob Nance of Heartland Sings and a multi-generational panel and round-table discussion facilitated by podcaster Tina Conrad of DJ Breast Cancer.

Chocolate Peppermint Cheesecake

Several years ago, I made a scrumptious dessert for a Mother’s Day get together, and ever since I have been nominated to bring the dessert for every family gathering and holiday. I am not complaining. Researching and developing recipes in this particular genre definitely has its perks (expanding waistline excluded).

The holidays always make me crave peppermint, and cheesecake is my husband’s favorite dessert, so this year I am preparing a Chocolate Peppermint Cheesecake and you should too!

Ingredients:

For the Cheesecake

• 18 Oreos, finely crushed (about 1-1/2 cups)

• 3 tablespoons butter, melted

• 4 eight-ounce packages cream cheese, room temperature

• 1 cup sugar

• 4 ounces high quality white chocolate, melted

• 25 peppermint hard candies

• 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract

• 2/3 cup sour cream, room temperature

• 4 eggs, room temperature

For the Ganache

• 4 ounces semi sweet chocolate

• 4 ounces heavy cream

• 1 candy cane, crushed

• Whipped cream

Preparation:

Preheat the oven to 325 F. Stir the crushed Oreos and melted butter together. Press into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan.

In a large bowl, beat together the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the melted white chocolate, crushed peppermints, peppermint extract and sour cream. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating just until combined after each addition.

Pour the batter on top of the crust in the spring form pan and bake for 55 to 60 minutes or until center is just set. Turn off the oven and let cool inside the oven for an hour. Remove and cool completely.

To make the ganache, chop the chocolate and place in a heatproof bowl. Heat the cream in a saucepan over low heat until hot. Do not boil. Pour the cream over the chocolate and whisk until smooth.

Cool and pour over cheesecake. Add whipped cream and crushed candy canes right before serving. a

Holiday Mocktails

During the holiday party season, the spotlight often shines on the cocktails. For those who like to party without imbibing, we’ve created this list of our favorite holiday mocktails.

Sparkling Cranberry Kombucha

Ingredients:

• fresh ginger, thinly sliced

• 1 large sprig fresh rosemary, plus more for garnish

• ½ cup 100% cranberry juice

• 2 12-ounce bottles kombucha of choice

• Fresh cranberries, rosemary sprigs and thinly sliced ginger for garnish

Preparation:

Fill 4 double old-fashioned glasses with ice and set aside. In a pitcher or quartsized mason jar, muddle sliced ginger and rosemary together using the end of a wooden spoon. Add cranberry juice and kombucha, stir gently to combine. Pour into ice-filled glasses (using a strainer, if necessary) and garnish with sprigs of rosemary, a slice of fresh ginger and a few cranberries before serving.

Slow Cooker Pear Cider

Ingredients:

• 6 Bartlett pears, cut in half, stems removed

• 1/4 cup brown sugar

• 2 cinnamon sticks

• 1 tsp whole cloves

• 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 6 cups of water or just enough to cover all of the ingredients

Preparation:

Combine all of the ingredients in a slow cooker, cover with a lid, and cook on high for 4 to 6 hours. When finished cooking, use a wooden spoon to mash the pears against the side of the slow cooker. Strain through a fine mesh sieve over a large bowl, pressing on the pulp to get as much liquid out as possible. Discard pear skins, larger bits of pear and spices. Strain again using the sieve or cheesecloth to reduce more of the pulp. Once your cider is strained, transfer to a large pitcher, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve hot with a cinnamon stick garnish and few fresh slices of pear.

december 2019

glo-roscopes

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

You are the belle of the holiday party scene and the first name on every guest list. Hostesses know that you have a knack for conversation and can find something to discuss with anyone you meet. Everyone has a good time when you are in the room.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

Don’t let the pressure of the season get you down. No one can do it all. Delegate your responsibilities to maintain your sense of perspective. Remember, happy holiday memories are made in a variety of ways and sometimes, less is more.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

Even though you have a tendency to wait until the last minute to tackle your holiday to do list, you always manage to get it accomplished. This year is no exception. If you start to feel a little overwhelmed, find a friend to help you divide and conquer. Don’t forget to reward yourself for your tenacity.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

Most great things are accomplished through trial and error, so make your holiday plans, but expect a few setbacks along the way. Allow these challenges to encourage you to make changes that will prove beneficial in time.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

There is no better time of year for happy surprises, and you love being in on the plan. Thankfully, you are good at hiding things that need to be hidden, keeping secrets and keeping your friends in the dark until the big reveal. You’re going to play a big part in a very special event this month.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Family relationships may be strained this season so give people the space they need to be alone with their thoughts. They will appreciate your understanding, and they will come back stronger when they have the time they need to sort things out.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

You hate last minute changes so plan ahead in order to remain in control of your schedule. Not every day needs to be packed full, so be sure to carve out some time for yourself to read a book, relax and take a time out from the holiday hoopla.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

Your presence is a gift to everyone you meet. You’re sparkling personality, creativity and big heart is the envy of everyone and it’s no wonder that your social calendar is full at this time of year. Invitations abound, but be judicious about which you will attend.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

While you tend to “go big or go home” during the holidays, something is coming at the end of the month that has your nerves on edge. It’s okay to dial it back this year. Everyone will understand that you are preoccupied and they will help take up the slack in your stead.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

You know presentation is everything and you put forth great effort to make magic happen this time of year. No one knows how you do it, but everyone wishes they had your knack to make the simplest thing feel extra special. Are you secretly one of Santa’s elves?

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

You’ve been waiting for a big change in your life and this month, it’s finally happening. The New Year cannot come fast enough for you because you are ready to move forward and begin the next chapter of your life.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

While most people worry about spending too much over the holidays, you’ll not only keep your budget balanced, but you’ll even make money this month. Watch out for rebates, coupons and other deals that will help you meet your financial goals. a
