About Emily

Ar t is…

…freeing. There are many things in life that are beyond my control, but I can control what goes on paper I have absolute authorit y over my creative process

What inspires you?

Describe the inspiration behind your cover ar twork?

This piece displays the juxtaposition bet ween natural beaut y (as seen with the flowers) and ar tificial beaut y (as seen with the lipstick). I actually came up with the idea while looking through some of my older ar t work and I decided to recreate this concept as I progress ar tistically.

I like to consider myself as a people watcher, a collector of faces, a constant obser ver of color and texture when it comes to inspiration for my ar t work I see faces ever y day and ever ywhere I go and yet they never get old. They are unique in color, size, texture and expression. When I obser ve someone’s face, it is as if I’m reading the cover of a book; their stor y I study the cover, letting my imagination run wild predicting and depicting the content that lies within

Your biggest suppor ter(s):

My biggest suppor ter is definitely my mother! She has eight children and still finds time to check in on me at college and introduce me to new trades and crafts I definitely got the creative gene from her

Why you read glo:

I read glo because I am interested in learning about other local ar tists as well as discovering local boutiques and shops. a

Hair color trends var y from season to season and, for fall, women often embrace darker colors and more tex tured styles.

“In the fall, a lot of people are look ing for a more rich color, ” said Alicia Anspach at Mark of Distinc tion in For t Wayne This season, add some warm under tones to your hair in shades of copper and rich sienna, or add an element of surprise with jewel tones of blue, green or purple fall’s take on the “unicorn” hair so popular during festival season

The Eyes Have It

As with hair, this season’s makeup trends are about tex ture “ This fall we are predic ting to see a lot of metallic eyes while playing up the smok y liner, ” said Hayley Stout who, along with her mom Amy Casto-Anderson, owns JOPPA Cosmetics Gold, copper and bronze are swept boldly across the lids, complemented by a smudgy gray or black liner Warm colors are dominating, but if you want to experiment, tr y a perk y yellow or magenta shadow with a neutral shade at the brow line.

A “natural, full” brow will dominate this season, said Sweet at Mark of Distinc tion To achieve this look, women are opting for microblading, a technique using a handheld tool to inser t pigment into the sk in don’t worr y, it ’s way less invasive than tattooing The result is a semipermanent, fuller look

How About Matte?

Eyes may be shiny, but lips and nails are going the opposite direc tion “Anything matte is also a huge trend right now ” said Stout at JOPPA Cosmetics On the lips, this retro finish makes layering colors easy so you can mix them to achieve the per fec t hue Apply a lip moisturizer at night because matte shades can be dr ying

Take your color into fall with richer tones “ We are going to be seeing a lot of "vampire" lips this fall too being your typical dark purple and deep reds, ” said Stout The same berr y colors are in for nails, in addition to nudes and coffee colors The popular “stiletto” shape will carr y over from summer

Great Skin, Always In

Don’t throw out your sunblock with the end of summer “One thing to remember while keeping up with trends is to be smar t about it I can't stress enough how impor tant tak ing care of your sk in is, ” said Stout You need sun protec tion year-round for healthy sk in, as well as a gentle face wash and moisturizer Talk with a dermatologist or sk incare consultant to determine the best produc ts for your sk in type. a

she glows Diane Groenert

In painting For t Wayne icons, Diane Groener t has become an icon in her own right.

The seasoned visual ar tist has produced about 200 home por traits since 1999, most notably ones in the historic West Central neighborhood. Her approach is simple but not always easy.

“In my house por traits, ” she said, “I attempt to depic t a bit of the owner ’s personality by playing with line, color and perspec tive Some are more animated than others ”

This is the more intimate and personal side of her work Recently, she had the chance to take her ar t into a more public venue Along with a few fellow ar tists, she was recently commissioned for several downtown murals The ar twork adorns the walls of a pedestrian alley between a restaurant and MKM architec ture + design.

The projec t is par t of an effor t k nown as “Ar t This Way ” I t is a collaboration in memor y of Christy Landrigan, a young lady who worked for the Downtown Improvement Distric t and Lincoln Financial before passing away in a car accident.

“I thought these lively images of downtown would help the revitalization, ” she said “ Things are happening here ”

She said the wide array of consistent ac tivities downtown bodes well for the urban core, which has undergone an “amazing transformation” in recent years Groener t k nows this firsthand, as a longtime resident of West Central She initially moved to For t Wayne to attend the Division of General and Technical Studies at Indiana University, earning an associate’s degree in commercial ar t in 1974. Some classes were taught at the now defunc t For t Wayne School of Fine Ar ts in West Central.

“ That ’s when I first met the neighborhood and fell in love, ” she said

That love affair with the neighborhood has weathered the years She recently moved into her second ar t studio in West Central and continues to draw inspiration from it and its residents The fac t that For t Wayne has an “exploding” ar t scene has been a boon to creatives, she said. No longer is Chicago the only proximate source of ar t, she said. Ar tists are taken more seriously here than in recent years, too. Groener t credits organizations like Ar tlink and the For t Wayne Museum of Ar t for advancing the cause of local ar tists.

Still, being a female ar tist has its share of challenges. “I t ’s a long, hard struggle, ” she said. “I t ’s like walk ing back wards in high heels.”

What makes it all wor th it, she said, is seeing the look on the face of a satisfied client when presented with their home por trait

“A lot of people break out into tears, ” she said a

glow GIRL glow GIRL

Schlatter

Age: 20

Kiarah Schlatter epitomizes what a strong, spiritual, positive woman can be. She’s a dedicated mother to her 15-month old daughter, Adrienne, and a loving wife to her husband, Carson and all at the young age of 20 Becoming a teenaged mother forced her to grow in her faith and her commitment to family

As the middle child and only girl with three brothers, Kiarah grew up in a ver y loving family. “My strongest influences were my mom and my dad, ” she said. “ Watching them pursue their relationship with the Lord made me want to at a young age as well ”

Growing up, Kiarah began to struggle in middle school and high school. “I didn't tr y hard enough and my grades reflec ted that, ” she said. “My mom and dad always encouraged me but I always ended up feeling not good enough, in more ways than just my per formance in school I began drifting away from my faith I met a man who pursued me and made me feel like I was good enough and I star ted to abandon the boundaries I set for myself when my relationship with God was strong and flourishing ”

As a 19-year-old freshman in college, Kiarah found out she was pregnant “I learned how quick ly something I had been hiding could come into the light and how much I really needed to come back to God, ” she said “I k new I couldn't do it on my own The love and grace I received from my church family, my parents and brothers, and his family was unfathomable We were overwhelmed by the amount of love and help that was ex tended to us ”

She admits it has been hard at times to be a 20-year old work ing mom (and owner of a photography business), married, and living on her own “I t's a ver y different stage of life than my friends who are the same age as me, ” she said “But I've grown in realizing how much more there is to life and how much more you are able to love someone when you have a child. God uses our situations and our circumstances to teach us, to grow us, to draw us closer to Him, and to reveal Himself to us in those situations.”

Kiarah is amazingly wise beyond her years, and has high aspirations for Adrienne and her future children. “My greatest hope is that they come to k now Jesus and that our marriage and our walks with Jesus demonstrates the love I want them to chase after Because of His amazing love, I am covered in grace and I owe ever ything to the One who gave His ever ything for me when I did not deser ve it ” a

Falling forFashion

What’s Trendy and How to Make It Work for You

Fall fashion is all about statement pieces. Except when it ’s all about subtlet y, that is

I t ’s about luxurious fabrics like velvet But all the coz y pieces in corduroy or washable suede sum up fall, too

Fall fashion is intense colors like coral, gold and red Except that neutral plaids and subtle silver will be all the rage

Yes, there is a lot going on in fashion for fall Where’s a fashionconscious gal like you supposed to begin? For tunately, our local boutique owners have tips on the best of the hot trends and how to make them work for you

A S neak-Peek at Fall Fashions

Susan Johnson, owner of Susan’s Fashions, shared her top fave fashion trends for fall “First, tops are relaxed and less struc tured, with full and loose sleeves, similar to what was popular in the ‘80s, but with cutouts to make them current, ” Johnson said

“Jackets remain popular, especially shor t jackets over longer tunics Suedelook fabrics that are washable will be ver y popular, ” she said “ Wearing leggings with the longer tunic tops is still on-trend But flared-leg pants are coming back, too especially when paired with one of the full-sleeved tops ” Johnson described the overall look as “ver y feminine and soft ”

Pulling It Together

I t ’s easy to make of the hottest new looks work with existing pieces in your wardrobe Johnson suggested, “ Tr y just adding a new top with the new sleeve style Or tr y a new shor t jacket over your tunic tops ”

“Also” , said Johnson, “adding a new fun piece of jewelr y to one of your existing outfits is always an easy update.”

Emma Marie Metcalf, owner and stylist at Lyn-Maree’s, described the hot trends in jewelr y and accessories

“ This season’s trends center around fabulous earrings, simple neck laces and ultra unique finds, ” she said “Statement earrings pair well with the bold

printed tops that are trending. I’ve been seeing tons of linear earrings and chandelier earrings. Anything fun and large will do.”

Long pendant neck laces or delicate claviclesk imming pieces remain ver y popular “But chokers and wrap neck laces are getting more popular all the time, ” said Metcalf. “ Wrap neck laces are my favorite. They are versatile and timeless and work well on all women. Wrap neck laces can be worn as chokers, long simple neck laces, wrap bracelets or even a belt ”

The best accent for those loosesleeved tops? “Large bangles, wrap bracelets, cuffs and stack able bracelets are still going strong, ” said Metcalf

It s In the Bag

Statement handbags and wallets will be hot, too “Anything unique, headturning and unexpec ted from a cat shaped handbag to a flamingo wallet (will be popular), ” Metcalf said

Even fanny packs are making a comeback “ The fanny pack, though, is going to be a hard one for most people to get away with, ” advised Metcalf.

“Stick with a cross-body or a back pack style handbag Totes are mak ing a huge comeback, too I’m so happy we are out of the tiny-handbag-that-heldnothing trend! Large, plain, classic, soft leather totes are the per fec t way to get your life to and from ever ywhere.”

Update

To update your existing wardrobe, it ’s all about the little added details that add so much. “Add any accessor y with a pompom or a tassel and you’ll be right on trend, ” said Metcalf

Happy shopping, ladies and consider yourself schooled on all the fun options for fall a

D ynamic Divas and

T heir D ogs

The dog days of summer Most of us hear that saying and think about dogs lazing in the sun, too hot and tired to get up for a game of fetch. But it turns out the phrase is ancient and refers to the dog star, called Sirius, which rises in these summer months Come to think of it, the ladies we inter viewed for our D ynamic Divas and Their Dogs ar ticle, probably prefer it that way. After all, their dogs play a starring role in their lives, no matter what the season

When Carrie Snyder goes to work, it ’s not to train dogs, but to help people fly She owns and operates three Sk y Zone Trampoline Parks, including one right here in For t Wayne “But I do take my dogs to work with me Most likely, when the parks are closed during the school year, you’ll find me in my office with a dog at my feet, ” she said

Snyder says “a” dog, not “my ” dog because she has four living with her at home For her, “Life without a dog isn’t complete ” Not only do they provide unwavering companionship, they carr y

memories of loved ones “ When I was a little girl, we had a Great Pyrenees puppy that my dad brought home after some dogs had attacked our sheep. My dad passed away in April 2016 Father ’s Day came, I was really missing him. A friend posted a Great Pyrenees puppy online that was in a bad spot and needed a foster home The nex t day, Sampson was delivered to our home He reminds me of my dad Sampson helps ease the pain of missing my dad as a little reminder of my childhood and some sunshine and happiness today ”

22 glo s august 2017 F E A T s
Car r ie Snyder

Vicki Heckman is a former teacher who now stays home with her k ids, but she didn’t give up on teaching. “I'm a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence, ” she said. “ We currently have two Labs: O wen is a 7-year-old Lab who was released from ser vice dog professional training and Monroe is a 3-month-old Lab currently in training ”

These dogs give V ick i love as well as a sense of mission. “ While our puppies enhance our lives during the shor t time in which they live with us, we hope they permanently change someone’s life as a ser vice dog.” One of Heck man’s former trainees is in advanced training now, and she hopes to be at his graduation in the fall, when she might see him matched to someone who needs a ser vice animal and “pass the leash” to his new companion

“A lot of people can’t understand how we could give up the dogs after a year-and-a-half, but k nowing that they could potentially make an impac t on someone's life is all the motivation I need!” Heck man teaches the trainees basic obedience 30 commands and socialization sk ills She loves the work as much as she loves the canine students

Leslie Wor thy, a key account representative and SAP key user with BYK USA, lives (and works from home) with Lakota “He’s a 3-year-old Australian Shepherd, but he thinks he is a person, so don’t tell him he is a dog!”

This dog-person recently helped her emotional transition when Wor thy left Connec ticut to live here in For t Wayne. “Although the move was exciting and I love it in Indiana, I was leaving behind my daughter and my grandchildren There were many nights that first month when I just sat and cried I t was Lakota who k new instinc tively that I was sad and nuzzled me and put his paw on my leg, as if to say, I understand ”

If Wor thy were a dog, she thinks she’d be a Labrador retriever because “they love to be in the woods, to freely run through paths in the woods and to jump into a lake with reck less abandon They love life! They look for the nex t adventure!” Just like she and Lakota jumped into life in For t Wayne with a sense of adventure

Ann Shive is the owner/curator of Crestwoods Frame Shop and Galler y. Not a surprise as this For t Wayne native and IU Bloomington grad has a degree in fine ar t and ar t histor y So how did James, her mixed breed that she calls “an original, ” end up work ing in the ar ts?

She says James isn’t just a rescue dog she and her husband fell in love with, he’s a galler y employee. “He's smar t, a people lover, and is ‘manager ’ of my galler y He works with me ever y day and is ver y popular with our clients, ” Shive said

Sue Rawlinson, a writer, editor, blogger, author and the woman behind not only glo and HOME Living, but also an online community, InSuesShoes.com, also has a book due out this fall. “So, I’m vir tually always writing and creating and to do so well, I need periodic breaks of humor Therein lies my reliance on Bentley He cracks me up even when he sleeps, ” Rawlinson said

Bentley is a “slightly neurotic and naughty goldendoodle He keeps me laughing ” For instance, Bentley is fond of swimming, and has a penchant for dr ying off in style. Rawlinson said, “He swims on the daily in our pond as such, he needs frequent baths (ponds stink) After each bath, he gleefully spasms into what we call the ‘Bentley Freak-Out Dance ’ Words cannot adequately describe his enthusiastic lack of grace, nor the drastic speed at which he slides across the floor, attempting trac tion as wet paws simultaneously sprawl in different direc tions. I t ’s cheap, delightful family enter tainment and it ’s a game to see what he’ll happily slide into first.”

Rawlinson’s only lament is that Bentley ’s favorite treats happen to be her shoes, “but only the expensive ones ”

These women have room in their hear ts and homes and sometimes even their work places for their canine friends When I asked them why it ’s so impor tant to have a dog in their lives, their responses shared a theme: unconditional love And why not, dogs love us in nearly ever y circumstance Ever y time we open the door and they greet us, it ’s like they are falling in love with their family for the first time a

There’s More Than One Way to Shine a Tooth.

Teeth whitening can be done with several basic methods O ver-the-counter produc ts, like teeth whitening strips and tray k its, are applied direc tly to the teeth and worn 10-30 minutes a day for 10 days to several weeks. A cheaper but longer route, these produc ts still offer noticeable results for most people. Look for the American Dental Association seal to ensure the produc t is safe for tooth enamel.

For a middle ground combo of dentist office and DIY, obtain an at-home whitening k it from your dentist. Rachel Combs, financial and marketing coordinator from Dr. Bunner, DDS’s office,

Smile Pr etty

I

t ’s N o t J u s t f o r K i d s

Your smile. It ’s your ‘Hello’ to the world. But, if you’re not thrilled with your teeth because they ’re not as white or as straight as you’d like, your hello can look more like a shy ‘Hi ’

Don’t fret though Plent y of options abound to get a sparkling smile

explained the process Teeth impressions are made in the office to create a tray that fits the individual’s teeth per fec tly. Patients then wear the trays to whiten at home. Combs said results can last 5-7 years as long as the patient doesn’t consume a lot of staining foods (coffee, wine, tea)

Prefer to leave it in the hands of the professionals? In-office whitening, also offered at Dr. Bunner ’s office, is generally done in one visit, after impressions have been made of teeth. The time to whiten teeth generally takes one to two hours

Beware though, not all types of tooth discoloration will respond to whitening. Generally, yellowed teeth respond well to whitening treatments, but teeth with a gray tone will not Talk to your dentist to ensure your teeth will benefit from whitening

Standing Straight

There are more options than ever to straighten crooked teeth And it ’s not just for k ids either The American Association of Or thodontics repor ts 20 percent of new or thodontic patients are adults A newer method on the teeth straightening scene uses clear trays (like the Invisalign system) These snug trays are worn

about 22 hours per day and then changed ever y one to two weeks to gradually move teeth.

Braces have evolved and now come in clear or tooth colored (no more metal mouth) In fac t, Leilani Looney of Angela Becker Or thodontics said most adults they see prefer conventional braces. “Patients want the results to turn out perfec tly and they k now braces give or thodontists more control [over the results], ” she said.

One last smile-enhancing method wor thy of mention is veneers Generally made from a ceramic material, veneers are useful for covering cracked, permanently stained or crooked teeth. Placed on the front of teeth, they can drastically improve a smile. Rachel Combs said this about veneers, “Patients can choose the shape of the tooth if they prefer rounded or squared And they last for many years ”

I t ’s never too late to have a healthy, confident smile. a

Fashionable Sleep

Fashionable Sleep

Sometimes it seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish ever ything we want to do

Many of us sacrifice sleep in order to win back valuable waking hours, but doing so can ac tually hinder produc tivit y and shor ten lifespans. Sleep deprivation has been linked to obesit y, diabetes and cardiovascular disease to name only a few. So relax. Take a nap. Sleep in if the notion strikes you. The sleep you get today could add precious years (and time) to your life

Restful Rituals

“ We seldom really think about how impor tant a good night ’s sleep is to our wellbeing, ” said Frank Gentr y, owner of Niagara Therapy of For t Wayne. “I t ’s just something we have to do. And when life changes, we need to find ways to adapt our sleeping habits. Sometimes it ’s difficult to create new ones even though we k now it ’s good for us, but that ’s where having a sleeping plan can come into play ”

1. Schedule for sleep. Know how much sleep your body needs and plan accordingly.

2 Exercise before bed. Not too late though; you’ll need to wind down before nodding off

3 Don’t go to bed too hungr y or full. A little snack will do the trick Avoid caffeine and alcohol

We ordered the roasted turkey with smoked gouda, spring mix, red onion, rainbow peppers and avocado mousse. We also enjoyed grilled sweet corn, rosemar y,

We were tempted by their beautiful breakfast jars and desser t options but had to get back to work Nex t time, however

Leo ( July 23 - August 22)

You are the star of the show this month and your bir thday is sure to be a blast Sit back and soak up the love from family and friends like the serene queen you are Pen handwritten thank you notes and splurge for the stamps Ever yone likes receiving something other than bills in the mail

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

I t may drive you mad that the fall semester begins before summer is barely half over, but you take it all in stride because you value education so much You’re sure to get some great deals on supplies if you shop early enough However, the clothes are going to cost you Save up

Libra (September 23 - Oc tober 22)

Do the dog days of summer get you down? If you find some humor in ever y situation you are in, you will be able to balance the good with the bad. Now is not the time to go craz y from the heat or to make hasty decisions. Weigh ever y option carefully and then make a final decision with confidence.

Scorpio (Oc tober 23 - November 21)

Although you may think your sk in is indestruc tible, ever yone has a chink in her armor and it ’s possible a co-worker will find it Don’t let the small stuff get to you and let the big stuff sor t itself out No one can make you feel inferior without your consent

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

Little things mean a lot so pack your child’s lunchbox with unique treats she is sure to love Take time to write a note on her napk in Pack an ex tra cook ie Trust me, she will notice your thoughtfulness, especially when having a bad day Pay attention to her after school chatter There is something you need to k now

Capricorn (December 22 - Januar y 19)

The school year is off to an eventful star t and it seems like there is something going on all the time In order to keep it all together, you must stay organized and balanced. Feel free to say no when you have too much on your plate. Don’t be talked into tak ing on more than you can handle.

Aquarius ( Januar y 20 - Februar y 18)

No matter if your child is heading off to school for the first time, star ting their final year of high school or entering another transitional time of life, it ’s time to celebrate O f course that is hard to do when you feel like your “baby ” is slipping away Don’t worr y, he still needs you, but he must stand on his own two feet as well

Pisces (Februar y 19 - March 20)

Prac tice makes per fec t and you have been work ing ver y hard on something, haven’t you? Whether it is a manuscript, a hobby or a new recipe, now is the time to show off your sk ills and let others mar vel at your tenacity Your example will inspire

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Avoid arguments whenever possible this month Conflic t seems to be look ing for you, but you do not have to engage Talk less and smile more you may learn to see things from a perspec tive other than your own This makes resolution so much easier for all par ties involved

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

You may think it is too early for a test, but things tend to sneak up when you least expec t it Stay on top of your studies and remember what the instruc tor said: you will pass any examination with flying colors Don’t look for a way around it or ask for an ex tension There are no shor tcuts in life

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Histor y has a way of repeating itself and you feel like you’ve been here before While repetition can make one stronger, you’ve had enough reprisals of this nature What will you do this time to ensure a better outcome or to make cer tain this will never happen again?

Cancer ( June 21 - July 22)

Your child’s class projec t will teach you as much as it teaches her Where will it lead? Who k nows, but it could spawn a new hobby, career or interest Be open to the experience and follow where it goes. Dig below the sur face and open up a whole new world for yourself. a
