From the executive editor Happy 10th birthday, glo!

I am honored to be part of this inspiring publication. It’s serendipitous that I should be here to usher in the next decade. I remember when the publication launched. The first editor, Rebekah, reached out to me to be a writer and I LOVED my assignments. A few of my favorites include a feature on inspiring weight loss stories for the July 2014 issue, one about the

women of the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo for the June 2014 issue, as well as countless She glo(w)s and He glo(w)s features throughout the years.

glo was also a HUGE supporter of an event I organized for breast cancer survivors called Bust a Move.

This event featured beautiful artwork that was created from the plaster casts of breast cancer survivors and benefitted Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana. glo was one of the first sponsors on board and supported us for 8 years. In 2018, I was working part-time for a local nonprofit when my friend Rebecca, a long-time account executive with The Papers, reached out to me about the open executive editor position for glo and HOME Living. I met with then-editor, Sue, about the position and knew it was meant to be. Having previous experience as the editor for a multi-publication company and being well connected to my community made me a good fit to carry the publication forward. Meeting with Ron and his team solidified that for me, and I have loved every minute of it.

From planning engaging content and working with my rock star account executive Melinda, our amazingly talented graphic designers Maymie and Mary, and part-time account executives Lynn and Toni, to supporting various nonprofit organizations in our community and throwing the biggest party of the year (glo Bash), there is never a dull moment in this role. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

It’s here, ladies. The coveted time of year that allows us to shed our layers and embrace the warmth of a new season—spring! With a change in season comes a change in our wardrobe. Time to trade in those winter coats for shorts and flowy dresses. We spoke with local fashion experts Emma Metcalf, owner and stylist at Lyn-Maree’s in Auburn, and Sue Johnson of Susan’s Fashions in Fort Wayne, to see what trends we should be looking for this season. Here are some of their thoughts on spring must-haves.

Spring Leather Although the warm temperatures may discourage you from a leather jacket, lighter material options are available and look great in soft, neutral colors like a warm, buttery brown or a simple white.

Wide Leg Bermudas Another piece of fashion from the past that Metcalf said “will be making a great come back. They are comfy and look great with a tucked in, knotted or shorter top and easily paired with heals or flats.” te

High Waisted Shorts Flattering and reminiscent of vintage fashion, we’ll be seeing a continuing trend of high-waisted shorts in styles like paper bag and hot pants. These shorts look great with a tucked in top and some flats.

60s Style Prints, Geometrics & Polka Dots It’s okay to be a little whimsical with your wardrobe from time to time. Let your personality speak with vintage prints and polka dot tops and accessories. It’s always a “great way to add something a little extra,” Metcalf noted. While Johnson mentioned that geo metric prints and “splashes of color” will be taking over our spring tops and accessories, as well.

Vests & Blazers Along with spring leather, we’re seeing a return of blazers and vests as layers that really help an outfit pop. Create a fun mix of casual and classy by pairing a lacey top with a velvet blazer or use a vest to pair with a long, flowing dress. Metcalf’s tip for getting the right fit for your body “is making sure that the bottom of the vest hits you at the smallest part of your waist or below your hips.”

Neon & Bright Colors Johnson said that we will see quite a bit of neon coming back as we introduce more color into our wardrobe. The best way to incorporate this is with “a sweater with neon orange, pink or yellow in it, or a tennis shoe with a touch or trim of neon on them. Black & White Color may be taking the forefront of fashion but black and white remains a classic staple.

Aging is a privilege, but wrinkles, facial creases and other imperfections don’t have to be part of the experience.

Fortunately, BOTOX® and other brands of neuromodulators are a safe and effective way to address these concerns so you can look and feel better in your skin.

The medical spa community has been using BOTOX® for years. BOTOX® is a brand name of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. There are other brand names, such as Dysport and Xeomin, which all block signals from the nerves to the muscles.

Lynn Blanchard with Belle Sante Med Spa said the procedure allows for targeting trouble areas.

“BOTOX® is injected with a micro-needle into the muscle or areas that your individual needs require,” she said.

This means the injected muscle can’t contract and therefore the wrinkles relax and soften, giving you a more youthful look.

So, what can you expect with this treatment?

Lauren Eickhoff, Marketing Director at Aspire Plastic Surgery, is a wealth of knowledge on this topic.

“During your consultation, you will meet with Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Brian Lee or one of our Advanced Practitioners,” she said. “At that time, they will examine your skin and talk about your goals for the procedure and areas of concern.”

From here, they will recommend the best treatment for you and proceed with the injection. The sites will vary according to the patient’s needs, but Dr. Ryan M. Diepenbrock with Diepenbrock Facial Cosmetic Surgery offered a few guidelines.

“The most commonly treated sites include the area between the eyes known as the 11 lines,” he said. “Usually the forehead and crow’s feet are treated simultaneously to provide the optimum result for wrinkle treatment in the upper face.”

This is not a quick fix, however. According to Eickhoff, it can take up to two weeks to see full results. And BOTOX® is not permanent, but the effects do last about 3 to 4 months; therefore, treatment is recommended every 3 to 4 months.

BOTOX® is a commitment and may not be accessible to all women due to the financial investment.

“Cost depends on what areas we treat and how many units are injected. Plan to spend on average $300 to $625 per treatment,” said Eickhoff.

It may be worth it, especially if you notice your skin is starting to show signs of aging, such as forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet and fine lines.

Many women begin BOTOX® injections in their twenties to prevent further aging, she added.

Diepenbrock agreed.

“Neuromodulators are being injected in younger patients today than ten years ago,” he said.

“Many patients in their mid to late 20’s and early 30’s are looking for preventative BOTOX®. By weakening the muscles early, it prevents the skin from wrinkling during animations. This limits the onset of wrinkles at rest.”

But like any procedure, women shouldn’t rush into the clinic without doing their homework.

“BOTOX® injections are perfectly safe when administered by a licensed professional who is trained in injectable treatments,” Eickhoff said.

“It is imperative to do your research to ensure that your provider is licensed and has the proper training to ensure a safe treatment with the best possible results.” a

Executive Director of Fort Wayne Trails, Inc. Megan McClellan is a trailblazer in more ways than one. From her early travels to her current bike rides, she is taking steps to create a beautiful, functional system of trails for our community.

McClellan has had her fair share of travels. She spent several years of her childhood living in Holland; one year in Germany as an exchange student; one year in Cairo, Egypt her senior year of high school; and a college semester abroad in Namibia, Africa. After getting married, she and her husband, Bob, served together in the Peace Corps in Niger for 27 months.

McClellan is passionate about the trails in Fort Wayne and Allen County and has been creating ideas for quite some time. She has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Policy and wrote her master’s thesis on “Adaptive and Collaborative Management of Urban Trails.” She is also a board member of the Greenways Foundation of Indiana, a statewide non-profit trails advocacy organization. She adores the trail system and is excited to bring more of her ideas and expertise to the community.

“I love being able to ride my bike to work at the Auer Center, or just hop on the Rivergreenway and go for miles,” McClellan said. “You really get a different view of the rivers from the trails.”

“There are currently 120 miles of completed trail in Allen County,” McClellan explained, “There are over 10 miles of trail in the works for 2020.”

Another focus in years ahead is to make the trails more equitable and better balanced. She strives to make everyone’s voice heard and develop the best possible trail system for the community by including jobs, public transportation and schools.

Meet Camiah Anderson—a Lane Middle School sixth grader and a Boys and Girls Club member who was recently named Smart Girl of the Year.

The Smart Girls program focuses on health, fitness, prevention/ education and self-esteem enhancement, offering the tools to help girls reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible women.

“Between our three sites, we currently have 525 girls who are enrolled and participate in the Smart Girls program,” Jennings said, “so for Camiah to be one of five members nominated for the Smart Girl of the Year award really says a lot about her character and leadership.”

Anderson said behaving well was difficult at first because she had her own way of doing things, and when people made her angry, she acted out to get attention. Oftentimes she found herself getting write-ups and suspensions because of those bad behaviors.

Anderson decided she didn’t want to be like that anymore, so she tried change.

“That decision she made to change is something I really admire about her,” Jennings said. ”She comes in every day with a positive attitude and is always willing to help her staff and peers. She has come a long way.”

Changing wasn’t an easy task, but Anderson was determined to change in a positive way and successfully eliminated prior bad behaviors. “My past was a little rough, but I wanted to be a Smart Girl so I could show other girls you don’t have to let your past define your future,” Anderson said.

While Anderson is thankful to everyone at the Club, she is especially thankful for lead staff member Chris Wallace who identified her as a candidate for the award.

“When I saw Camiah going in the wrong direction, I started having conversations with her about how she could lead in a different way and she was eager to learn,” Wallace said. “Camiah is a natural leader. She is also very caring, determined and outgoing.

She just needed some guidance when she first started attending the Club.”

Winning the Smart Girls award means everything to Anderson.

“Every time I think about winning, it brings tears to my eyes,” she said. “This award is going to help shape my future.”

Anderson has plans for her future that include a short-term goal of finishing sixth grade with a 4.05 GPA – beating last year’s 4.0 GPA. Long term she would like to be a veterinarian with plans to attend North Carolina University for her bachelor and master’s degrees.

“I want to be a vet because animals are all some people have and knowing I could save someone’s best friend warms my heart,” she said. a

Barely shaking the corn silk from his hair only to settle down in another corn-fed state, Iowan native Alec Johnson came to Fort Wayne 14 years ago when he accepted a job as City Landscape Architect with the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department.

“When I was studying landscape architecture at Iowa State University, I worked for a landscape architect at a small design-build landscape company,” said Johnson, who took his first job at a civil engineering firm in a Minneapolis suburb after graduation.

“After later moving to another architecture firm where I led the landscape architecture division, I saw the Parks job and threw my hat into the ring. The next thing I knew, we were packing up and moving east to Fort Wayne,” he said.

Now Deputy Director of Planning and Development for the Parks Department, Johnson currently works on master plans for four small neighborhood parks. He is also working on various public art projects as a commissioner on the Public Art Commission and said his most visible projects is the design for Riverfront Phase Two and Three in Promenade Park, which is just the beginning.

“My wife, Laura, is an audiologist for ENT Associates in Fort Wayne,” said Johnson. “Our oldest son Logan, a North Side High School graduate, started at the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State last fall, and our daughter Isabella is a freshman at North Side High School.

We have a rescue dog named Alt and a rescue cat named Coda, neither of which comes when called.”

Those creative pet names should be a tip that Johnson is deeply involved in music composition and production. He was one a member of the founding team that started and managed the Middle Waves Music Festival. He is also an aficionado of hiking, biking, projection mapping, digital art and fly-fishing.

His greatest career accomplishment is becoming a skilled and capable practician of his craft.

“Landscape architecture is a rich, complex field of practice that has an immediate effect on the people who experience the places I design,” said Johnson. “I have the great pleasure and responsibility for shaping the places and spaces where life happens. The accomplishment comes with seeing that process play out again and again.”

The

Problem with Plastics

Single-use plastics are a growing problem for our society, perhaps more than most consumers realize. Not only do plastics litter our walkways and pose a threat to all kinds of wildlife, but they also find their way into our food. According to Jodi Leamon, sustainability coordinator at the Allen County Department of Environmental Management, most Americans consume a credit card-sized amount of microplastic per week!

Want to know what you can do to stop the trend? First, education is key. Here, we dispel three common myths about single-use plastics and offer some suggestions on ways you can make a difference in your community today.

Myth #1: I never use plastic water bottles, and I always refuse a straw at restaurants, so I’m doing my part.

Fact: Single-use plastics come in all kinds of packaging, everything from dishwasher pods to chip bags and granola bar wrappers. Any package that is crinkly or has a shiny, metallic look is plastic, too. And don’t forget about shampoo bottles, toothbrushes and deodorant containers.

Myth #2: If I do use plastic, I always put it in the recycling bin, so there’s no problem, right?

Fact: Most plastics that do get recycled are lightweight and small, so they have a tendency to fly out of recycling bins and trucks, making their way into the environment. And many plastics can never be recycled, since they are formed from different types of plastics fused together to form the single-use product.

Myth #3: Tiny bits of plastic that are too small to see, called microplastics or even nanoplastics, are primarily an ocean problem.

Fact: Microplastics aren’t just an ocean issue.

Consider the process. Plastic is made from petroleum that is drilled out of the earth and then transported long distances, where it’s made into single-use items and then transported again. By the time it gets to the consumer, it’s already made a huge impact on the environment.

So what can consumers do?

Step #1: Reduce An easy first step is refusing convenient takeaway items, such as straws, utensils and plastic water bottles or containers. And remember this rule: “BYO wherever you go.” For example, bring your own coffee cup to your favorite grind or take your own containers to food trucks.

• By 2015, the world had produced 7.8 billion tons of plastic – more than a ton of plastic for every person on the earth.

• Before 1980, recycling and incineration of plastic was negligible; 100% was therefore discarded.

• In 2015, an estimated 55% of global plastic waste was discarded and less than 20% was recycled.

• 18 billion pounds of plastic waste flows into the oceans every year—that’s the equivalent of 5 grocery bags of plastic trash sitting on every foot of coastline around the world.

• 40% of plastic produced is packaging, used just once and then discarded.

Step #2: Consider Eco-Swaps Replace plastic baggies with glass or reusable containers. Take your own bags to the grocery story. (A bag made from natural fibers is best.)

Look at the packaging on items you buy to see if the package is recyclable. And buy produce at your local farmer’s market, where you can sometimes find bees wax wrap instead of cling wrap, along with homemade soaps, shampoos and conditioners. Step #3: Advocate Consider reaching out to your favorite brands and ask them to work with the recycling industry to create packaging that is recyclable.

Our Namesake

Our magazine’s name sake, Gloria Baumgartner, passed away in 2008 after a long fight against ovarian cancer. She was the business manager and treasurer at The Papers, Inc. (parent company of glo), where husband Ron is the president and publisher.

By the Numbers 10 years = 120 issues, so we’ve covered a lot.

Here’s a glimpse of glo by the numbers.

For Gloria to be taken from the world far too soon is representative of the deadly nature of ovarian cancer. Each September, glo includes a feature about ovarian cancer in hopes that other women will be saved in time from similar fates.

Loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Gloria is still grieved by her 2 daughters.

“Our mom had a servant’s heart,” said Criss Corson, “And always put others ahead of herself. “ Her selflessness didn’t end with her daughters; she devoted time to other family members, friends, the community and her job.

“As kids, we would be at the shop waiting for Mom to take us somewhere and an employee would stop by to drop off paperwork,” Corson said. “What should have been a quick chat would turn into a 15 to 20-minute conversation about how that person was doing, how his/her family was doing, and so on. In my opinion, Mom was the business’ therapist.

She always gave of her time and made others feel appreciated, valued, and welcome.

“This didn’t change when she was diagnosed. Even though that should have been a time for her to be selfish, nothing changed. She continued to work as much as her body would allow, lying down on the floor in her closet when she needed to rest, but all the while, continuing with her life with positivity and hope, giving of herself so as to not let anyone down.

“Her grandchildren were not given the opportunity to truly know the wonderfully loving, doting grandmother she was, so I try daily to instill in them all of her best qualities: kindness, compassion, empathy, positivity, perseverance, and selflessness.”

Jennifer Baumgartner agreed with her sister.

“Mom had been seeing specialists for months for GI discomfort, bloating and all the cardinal signs of ovarian cancer, but no one picked it up until it was well advanced,” said Baumgartner. “And through the years of chemo, with all pre-/post-medication, surgeries, blood transfusions, side effects, infections, she moved forward with every lifesustaining but life-sucking event with bravery, strength and faith. Her priority was others, and for a few years she cared for her mother in her home while managing her ovarian cancer regimen. Her sister-in-law who was battling end-stage breast cancer, spent her final days in our Mom and Dad’s home; Mom cared for our aunt despite her own health struggles, which she laid aside to make sure everyone else was okay.

“I miss her today as much as the day she left.”

Earth Day promotes the idea of taking care of our planet, resources and ecosystem, and is an opportunity to celebrate Earth in many ways. Fort Wayne offers several options to celebrate Earth Day — and there are many ways to get creative with your kids at home, as well.

The Earth Day Virtual Challenge is a fun way to collectively see how many times we can run the distance of the equator: 24,901 miles. At least 415 participants are needed to commit to run at least two miles a day for the month of April to make it at least once around the Equator. It is a free challenge where you log your miles and report them to the virtual run challenge organization results page, either by joining Official Earth Day Challenge Facebook Group or Strava Group. This year for the first time, Fort Wayne will participate in the City Nature Challenge.

From April 24 to 27, locals can wander around the city to make observations about various natural species and photograph them. Then upload them to the Nature Challenge site for identification April 28 through May 3. The goal has three primary areas of focus: (1) number of observations, (2) number of species and (3) number of people who participated. The idea is to make wild observations—observations of plants,

Adults and kids of all ages will enjoy seeing these delicate, majestic creatures flying about in a protected environment—and be sure to carefully check your clothing before exiting, as butterflies have a tendency to land on visitors to catch a ride. Help protect the preserve’s habitats and the wildlife that depend on them at this annual event by helping to remove winter’s trash. Bring garden rakes, grabbers, any useful tools, trash bags and work gloves (waterproof recommended) if you can, and be ready to get wet and muddy.

I actually have two books that I am going between at the moment: “I Really Needed this Today” by Hoda Kotb and “Daring Greatly” by Brene Brown.

Hoda’s book offers a new quote for each day and a brief explanation as to what it means to her life or a memory it brings to mind. I love quotes, and it has been interesting how some of those quotes have changed my outlook on any particular day. I find Hoda very inspirational.

“Daring Greatly” is about having courage to do things in a way that you may not be used to. It encourages vulnerability during a time where everyone is supposed to be strong, confident and undaunted in real life and on social media. It encourages you to drop the façade and be real. I have experienced some major life changes over the past several months and this book has helped me make decisions, as well as justify some of the changes I have made. I’ve always been known to be risk-averse, but this book has helped me to step outside my comfort zone… and all for the better.

I love to read and have always read a variety of genres. I love fiction, historical nonfiction, biographies and autobiographies. How do you have a favorite book when there are millions to choose from? I do tend to pass along books that I’ve read with no expectation they will be returned to me. I started doing that during a month-long exchange trip to Australia. I read a lot as we traveled and left a book with every family that hosted me. I wrote a small note inside the cover, so they knew where and who the book came from. And I’ve started doing that with friends and guests to the university.

Is there a book you’ve started more than once but haven’t finished?

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” I have started that book probably three times and have yet to get past the first two or three chapters… I watched the movie instead. a

HAIR LOSS

Few things have the power to paralyze our self-image as profoundly.

Shirley Williams, owner of Southwest Hair and Day Spa, is on a mission to educate and promote to men and women that hair loss can be successfully addressed.

Trip to

Australia

The sun had just set, and no one was permitted a flashlight except the guide. No flash photography, no glowing cell phone screens.

Then, coming from the ocean, Pam Leffers saw the little penguins, waddling right up to shore for the evening.

These penguins, Eudyptula minor, are the smallest of all penguins. They grow to be about 15 ½ inches high and weigh just over 2 pounds. They swim on the continental shelf and visit the same family borough every single night.

After a few passed, Leffers thought, “Well, that’s cool.” Then hundreds more came to shore. She calls the experience one of her favorites from her trip to Australia, where she traveled last fall with her husband.

“Visiting Australia had been on [my husband’s] bucket list for years,” Leffers said, but she had never considered a visit to the continent. He’s not a huge planner, so Leffers studied up on Australia: She read “In a Sunburned Country,” Bill Bryson’s travel memoir about Australia. She loved it. She picked up a Lonely Planet guidebook. Before long, she was as excited about the trip as her husband.

Over the couple’s month-long visit, they saw a range of locales across the country. According to Leffers, this sort of city hopping around a mass as large as Australia—it’s about 2,500 miles wide, or the distance from Seattle to Boston—isn’t too difficult once you’re on the continent, because flights across Australia are so inexpensive.

They took full advantage of that fact: • They started in Sydney, on Australia’s southeastern coast along the Tasman Sea. It’s Australia’s largest city.

• They hopped up inland to Queensland, which is not far from the Great Barrier Reef.

• Then they went across the country to Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Perth is called the most isolated city in the world, sandwiched between the Australian outback on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other.

• They hugged the coast east and south to reach Adelaide, on the Great Australian Bight, the open bay nestled in Australia’s southern belly.

• Then there was the weekend trip to Kangaroo Island, which they reached by ferry, and the drive inland to Barossa Valley, Australian wine country.

• They visited their nephew studying in Melbourne (Australia’s cultural capital) and spent an afternoon in Tasmania (home to gourmet food, bushwalking, beer, wine, whiskey and wildlife including, yes, the Tasmanian devil).

“I was surprised by how different each area of the country was,” Leffers said. “We probably went to nearly every big city’s botanical garden.

The foliage was different. The topography was different.”

The two days driving across the Great Ocean Road, which stretches across the southern part of the state of Victoria, was a highlight.

“If you can imagine beautiful ocean views and these huge rock formations changing over time,” Leffers said. “It’s scary to drive. In a lot of places, you’re on a winding road with no sides up to the top of a mountainous area.” a

Per the CDC’s 3/15/2020 announcement, “The CDC recommends that for the next eight weeks, organizers cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States,” Tapestry has no choice but to adjust our schedule.

Therefore, we have decided to postpone Tapestry until a date in June. We are working with Parkview, Purdue University Fort Wayne, our keynote speaker (Ashley Judd) and our constituents to secure a date. Once confirmed, we will issue an announcement and roll out a plan of action.

At Tapestry, attendees will have the chance to shop over 170 sponsor booths from local businesses, artisans and boutiques, as well as enjoy a silent auction. During the morning, there will be various educational breakout sessions that focus on topics like cooking, design, stress relief, fashion, and women’s medical and heath related issues. In the afternoon, the keynote speaker, Ashley Judd, will take the stage to inspire the audience.

While enjoying a much-needed day off, there is a deeper meaning behind Tapestry. The event is in place to help other women reach their educational goals. Proceeds raised support the Tapestry Parkview Endowment and Scholarship funds and provide scholarships to studying nursing, dentistry, medical imaging and other degrees in the health sciences. In the past nineteen years, more than $1,000,000 has been raised, and 101 students have received scholarships. The 2020 Tapestry Scholarship Recipients, as well as the 2020 Linda L. Ruffolo Dedication Award Honoree, will be recognized at the event.
