What started out as a class project in Cheryl Van Laeken’s fifth-grade classroom at Milford Elementary has gone viral, garnering media attention as far away as France. She, nor her students, expected their efforts to gain worldwide attention, but less than a month after the idea took flight, it has accomplished just that.“It started when I heard of a similar idea in California on the radio as I was driving to work,” Van Laeken said. “I asked the kids when I got to school if it was something they would be interested in doing, and they all agreed!”
The idea was to create a phone line into which people could call to receive a positive message.

The council understands how important services are and how valuable it is to retain employees. We are aware of employees’ needs and balance that with doing our duty to remain in budget. The county sets the budget and tax rates over a year ahead. If expenses or higher wage demands come, we do not have the ability to raise the price to the consumer as a privately owned company may do. The council must balance the existing budget and forecast to meet the needs of the community.”

Kyle stepped into an environment in which he had to deal with the carnage left from a sheriff’s office in which the formerly elected sheriff had been convicted of a felony and the outgoing appointed sheriff signed contracts not in the best interests of the county. The sheriff’s office did not have the trust of most of the other law enforcement agencies in the county. The jail was filthy and overcrowded. Work release was losing an incredible amount of money and there seemed to be a revolving door on the jail for many people who found themselves caught in the horrors of addiction.

Dukes hired his brother-in-law as chief deputy. I want my sheriff to put the best persons possible in places of leadership. I think we all can agree with that. Now, I am not an “insider” in the sheriff’s office, but I know when the sheriff’s brother-in-law was a detective, he closed as many cases as the other detectives in the office. Combined.

The drugs, tattooing, and vandalism all point to leadership. I only hear excuses: • Talk about how times have changed.•How drugs are hard to stop.
I could keep going, but I think you get the idea. Smith has practiced much more “politics” in the last six months than Dukes has in the last four years. I see nothing new Smith is bringing to the table he can actually accomplish Dukes isn’t already doing, or his team isn’t accomplishing very well.

On March 18, a Syracuse Police detective met with a CVS employee, who said she was working March 15 when the suspect printed child pornography from the photo kiosk. She told the detective she believed she could identify the suspect if she saw a photograph of him. Upon being provided a photo lineup of several people, the employee identified Fowerbaugh as the person who had printed multiple photos of child pornography.

Dear Editor: I plan to vote for Jim Smith for Kosciusko Sheriff in the May primary.Asa retired law enforcement officer, I was shocked to read about the drugs and tattooing currently occurring in the jail. This information came to light during the Susaraba trial. For those of you not aware, the Susaraba trial was about the overdose death of an inmate — a death Sheriff Dukes told the press was “out of his control.”At the time I write this, there have been another possible four overdoses at the county jail in a two-and-a-half-week timeframe. The one press release issued by the sheriff’s office made it sound like the jail was not searched until after the second possible overdose, which was two days after the first. What leader would wait to do an all-out search until a second overdose occurred?

April 3-9 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Connect with Your Library,” which promotes the idea libraries are places to get connected to technology by using broadband, computers and other resources. Libraries also offer opportunities to connect with media, programs and ideas, in addition to books. Most importantly, libraries also connect communities to each other.
