“Comfort Keepers was an invaluable asset in my toolbox regarding my mother’s home healthcare requirements.

I was able to go to work and concentrate on other aspects of my mother’s healthcare needs. It gave me a “peace of mind” feeling on a daily basis knowing that their qualified staff would handle things at mom’s house and keep me updated.

Comfort Keepers is a local outstanding healthcare organization; I would recommend them for any in-home healthcare needs.”

“Comfort Keepers is an outstanding healthcare organization in Fort Wayne and surrounding areas.

Their professional staff worked with my son to set up a well-balanced healthcare plan that allowed me to stay at my own home and enjoy my later years. Thus, I was able to do everyday activities on my terms. They helped me with personal hygiene needs, light housework, meal preparation and medication reminders. They treated my like family.”

Nursing Facilities with Memory Care Units

Pharmacy Delivery

When it’s time for you or a loved one to transition to a new living situation like independent living, assisted living, or to a skilled nursing facility, it can be a daunting experience—emotionally and financially. I know this firsthand from helping my parents through similar changes. You might be wondering, " How do I pay for long term care? What do I do with the house and the decades worth of things in it? How does Medicaid play into this?”

In addition, when someone has passed away, knowing where to start can be incredibly overwhelming. The emotional weight of loss, combined with practical concerns, can leave you feeling lost. You may be asking yourself, "What do we do with the house? DoI have thae right to sell it? How do we manage the property? What about the belongings? What are the legal steps we need to take?"

Having someone who understands the emotional, financial, and logistical aspects of these processes is essential. Having been through both scenarios with my parents, I understand the challenges you are facing firsthand. I can assure you that you will need a team of experts surrounding you. As a member of Council on Senior Services, I am connected firsthand to these resources in Allen County. Call me today at 260-312-4558. Together, my team of experts and I will walk you through this process.

FREE OLDER ADULT

Manchester University College of Pharmacy, Natural and Health Sciences

Teresa DeLellis

PharmD, BCPS,

The American Geriatrics Society recommends having a health care professional take an in-depth look at your medications at least once per year, for several reasons1:

As we get older:

• The brain becomes more sensitive to drug effects

• Medications stay longer in our body because we have less muscle and more body fat

• Our liver and kidneys do not process medications as efficiently as when we were younger

• Our body contains less water and medications can become more concentrated

When this happens, harmful effects include:

• Drug interactions

• Falls and fractures

• Memory problems

• Hospitalizations and higher risk of death

A board certified geriatric pharmacist can work with you and your doctor to help accomplish a medication safety review to save the valuable time you spend with your doctor during an office visit

Benefits many experience are:

• Taking less medications

• Having a simpler medication regimen that is easier to follow

• Experiencing less side effects from medications and avoiding effects of medication overuse

• Fewer drug interactions that can cause side effects or loss of effect from other medications

• Better control of medical conditions

Safe at Home

THE PROBLEM

Every year emergency personnel respond to hundreds of telephone calls to homes where there is a possible emergency situation, but are unable to gain immediate access. It may be a concerned neighbor or a family member who has a fear for their safety or a 9-1-1 call that is answered, but the caller is unable to speak.

THE SOLUTION

Registering in the Safe at Home Emergency Registration System will provide important contact information to emergency personnel before an emergency occurs. The information you give is strictly voluntary, confidential and could save your life. Safe at Home information is entered into the computer system shared by police, fire and EMS services throughout Allen County.

HOW TO ENROLL

Seniors or family members may complete the FREE enrollment form and mail it to the address on the form. You or your family member will receive a postcard confirming enrollment and will receive bi-annual calls to update information. For more information, call 260-469-3036 or visit www.fwpd.org/prevention or www.allencountyhealth.com.
