This year we have 9 beautiful new homes, one home under construction, one remodel home, and two non-profit homes on display. There is a wide variety and styles of homes to visit this year. Each will showcase their own unique designs, craftsmanship and some of the newest trends in the industry. I encourage you to take the time to visit each home, talk with each builder about what they have to offer and what products they use. I would like to recognize Vern Heacock of Town & Country Builders for being chosen as our Legacy Builder this year. Vern has been a member of the BAEC since 1979 and a leader in the building community. Thank you, Vern, for your commitment to our industry and all you have done. President’s Message Welcome to the 2022 Parade of Homes sponsored by the Builders Association of Elkhart County (BAEC) The BAEC is very grateful that you have chosen to spend your time and money to view the homes in this year’s parade; speaking for and as one of the builders, we also thank you. For the second year and for years to come, we are featuring a builder who has been building homes in the area for decades, our “Legacy” builder. This year’s Legacy builder is Town and Country Builders. Vern Heacock has been a consistent “Parade” builder, presenting beautiful custom homes year after year and I am sure his home this year will be the same and worth the drive. Speaking of worth the drive, we hope you take the time to go to Shipshewana Homes and tour their entries; rumor has it there may be some tasty food and refreshments available as well! I have been proud and fortunate to be involved in, and a part of, the residential building industry in Elkhart County since the mid-nineties. I have been involved in the BAEC for about the same amount of time and continue to be impressed by what the BAEC does and represents. Niki Groves and her staff of one, Tara Stahl, deserve a huge Thank You. I also want to thank Brian Voorde, this year’s Parade of Homes committee chairman and the entire Parade of Homes committee for the time and effort they have put into the event this year. BAEC Legacy Builder By Lauren Zeugner Vern Heacock, of Town and Country Builders, and his wife, Diane, were in the market to purchase a home in 1977. The couple even made an offer on a home in Goshen. While they were waiting to see if their offer would be accepted, on the way home from work, Heacock got the idea of possibly building their own home. He wasn’t sure how Diane would take to the idea since it wasn’t something they previously considered or discussed. But at dinner that night, she surprisingly brought up the idea of building their own home. And, as it turned out, their offer was rejected. So the Heacocks purchased a lot and built their own home, including doing a lot of the labor themselves. During this time Heacock was working in an RV factory, but was looking to find his long term career. “I had so much fun building our home, a year later I started Town and Country Builders.” He started out with a partner who he bought out later. He’s been having fun building homes for the last 44 years. “How fun is it to create beautiful homes,” he said. “I couldn’t think of doing anything else that would be more enjoyable and rewarding.” Diane was an intergal part of the company; she served as secretary and treasurer of the business until recently when she decided to take a step back. By 1983 the country was coming out of an economic downturn when Heacock built and sold his second spec home. The home was well received, so he duplicated it for the 1983 Builders Association of Elkhart County’s Parade of Homes. The home showcased some different ideas that those attending the parade really appreciated. “That kicked off our business,” Heacock said. Since then, he thinks Town and Country has missed only two Parade of Homes. In 1987, the Parade of Homes was held in Bent Oak and Heacock “got a bit bold” with a home featuring vaulted ceilings and balconies. “I think we won all but one award,” he said. A developer for Bayridge was so impressed with what Town and Country did in Bent Oak, he sponsored an even bigger home for his development. It was that project that kick started Heacock and Town and Country Builders into doing larger custom built homes. During the 1990s it wasn’t unusual for Town and Country Builders to build 15 to 20 homes per year and have up to three homes in the Parade. Heacock remembers going to national builders conventions and seeing the latest trends for design which included niches, columns and interesting spaces. Now it’s openness. Heacock said he still enjoys going into the office each day. “Every time we go out to stake out a new home and when it’s done and you pull up the cardboard and clean up the dust... It’s exciting and rewarding to see the finished product,” he said. Town and Country Builders has made it through several challenging times, from the economic downturn between 2008-2012 to during the pandemic where he had two houses under construction in Michigan, which had a stricter shut down than Indiana. 8 PARADE OF HOMES plus | June 2022

Town and Country’s team is hard at work on the home that will be in this year’s Parade of Homes, which will be held June 18-26. The house will be on Klinger Lake with a basement walk out to the lake and the main floor featuring almost a wall of glass on the lake side. Being a custom home builder, Town and Country Builders is used to working with people who come in with either a few ideas or complete plans of what they want their home to look like. “My challenge is I’ll see their ideas. I may (already) have plans that are close to what they want,” he said. “A lot of the time we work a plan to fit someone.” And he still enjoys meeting with the customer and making them satisfied.

In planning for the company’s future, Heacock recently sold the business to R. Yoder Construction. Heacock along with Brad Birkey, shown, will continue to handle the day to day operations.

These days, Heacock will work in a spec home as possible where he can play around with ideas. Heacock has also been considering the future of his company. He was recently approached with an offer that worked for him. R. Yoder Construction, based in Nappanee, recently purchased Town and Country Builders. Heacock will stay on and has been busy showing Brad Birkey the ropes. Birkey is a recent hire whose experience is more in remodeling and renovation. Heacock said the agreement he has with R. Yoder Construction is Town and Country Builders will be separate from R. Yoder Construction. He likes the new structure where he can slow down a bit if he wants but still be involved in the business. Town and Country Builders has been and will remain a family oriented business. Heacock noted he has three employees who have been with the company for at least 30 years and several more who have been with the company 15 years or more. “That says something when you have people here 30 years, “ said Birkey. “That’s a huge part of our company,” Heacock said. “People who are loyal, committed and honest.”

These acronyms represent EDUCATIONAL DESIGNATIONS the builder and remodeler has achieved to improve his/her understanding of the construction industry. They represent many hours of continuing education. The Indiana Quality Assurance Builder Standards provide, for the first time ever, new homebuyers and remodeling customers a way to measure their builder and the project against an industry approved set of standards. These Standards have been developed as a service to the new home consumers and remodeling customers. These Standards create a series of performance standards that builders and customers can use to communicate and understand other’s expectations regarding building sizable residential home remodeling projects ($5000.00 or more). The Standards address the most prevalent issues that arise between the builder and the customer before the

project, during the project, and most importantly, after the project is completed. All too often it is the unrealized or undiscovered expectations that create the majority of the problems encountered in the building/remodeling process. The Standards will help eliminate these problems before the project even begins. The Indiana Quality Assurance Builder Standards provide you with the confidence that professionals in the industry are handling your project. Make sure your builder or remodeler is a member of the Builders Association of Elkhart County and a Standards Builder and/or Standards Remodeler and be sure that you request your Standards manual at contract signing or at closing.

CGP Certified Green Professional is for single family builders, multifamily builders, remodelers, developers, land planners, architects and designers, energy raters, home inspectors, utilities staff, product manufacturer and supplier.

CAPS Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist is a professional designation designed to expand your understanding of the aging-in-place market, provide the necessary technical knowledge and resources, and give tools to gain access to the market.
