KNOX, IN - Sandra Kay Music, 73, died Tuesday, May 2, 2023, in Portage, Indiana. She was born September 30, 1949, in Corning, New York, to the late Lester Lawver and the late Shirley (Kosty) Kneale.

Sandra was a member of the Knox United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing Bingo, Yahtzee, doing puzzles, watching Golden Girls and Young and the Restless on TV and spending time with her cats and her family. She had worked as a medical aide.

She is survived by one son, Ronald (Linda) Music of Plymouth, Indiana, three daughters: Amy (Shane)Hilt, Belinda (Rob)Noble and Rhonda (Paul) Brust, all of Knox, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two sisters: Robin (Tim) Taylor of Sorrento, Florida and Renee (Art) Shiver of Carrabelle, Florida. She was preceded in death by one sister, Edna Russell.

Services were held Saturday, May 6, at the Knox United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dee Miller officiating. Memorials may be made to the Knox United Methodist Church or the Starke County Humane Society.

Arrangements were made by Braman &Son Memorial Chapel, Knox.

VERNON E. FITZWATER SR.

KNOX, IN - Vernon E. “Bud” Fitzwater Sr., 75, died Wednesday, May 2, 2023. He was born May 26, 1947, in Oak Hill, West Virginia.

Bud was a long-time employee of US Steel, having retired after 44 years of service. He loved fishing, camping, drinking coffee and attending Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Knox.

He is survived by his children: Vernon “Gene” (Johanne Johnson) Fitzwater Jr. of Lowell, Indiana, Patrick (Tonya) Fitzwater of Indianapolis, Indiana and Melissa (John) Culbertson of La Porte, Indiana, eight grandchildren, one great grandson and three brothers: Ronald (Sophia) Fitzwater of Oak Hill, Bobby Fitzwater of Beckley, West Virginia and Michael (Nora) Carte of Taylor, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Fitzwater and six siblings.

Amemorial service will take place on Thursday, May 18, at 11am CT, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Arrangements were made by M.C. Smith Funeral Home, Knox.

ATKINS

GROVERTOWN, IN - Freda M. Atkins, 83, died Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at her home. She was born October 21, 1939, in Fanrock, West Virginia, to the late Eldridge and Beatrice (Duncan) Hundley. On November 28, 1958, in Whitesville, West Virginia, she married John F. Atkins.

Freda lived in the area since 1982 and she and her husband co-owned F&F Contracting for many years. She was a member of the Highway Chapel Church of God in Hamlet, Indiana. She was a very kind and caring lady whose family was her life.

She is survived by one son, Mike (Denise) Atkins of Grovertown, two daughters: Jenifer Keffer of Andrews, Indiana and Angela (Maverick) Volesky of Corpus Christi, Texas and several brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, two sons: John Atkins Jr. and Tim Allen, one daughter, Lorie Turley and several siblings.

Visiting hours will be from 5-7pm CDT, Wednesday, May 10 at Rannells Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11am Thursday, May 11, at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Knox, with viewing an hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in the Fletcher Cemetery, Hamlet.
