JOHN DEAN SMITH

KNOX, IN - John Dean Smith, 64, died Monday, April 10, 2023, in LaPorte, Indiana, after a lengthy illness. He was born April 4, 1959, to the late J.W. and Faye Smith. On February 16, 1991, he married Glenna Noble Brown.

John was a 1977 graduate of Knox High School, where he excelled at football, baseball and having a good time. He had worked as a driver for Yellow River Farms. He was most happy with his many buddies shooting pool or attending NHRAdrag races.

He is survived by three brothers: Stephen Smith of Sunset Beach, North Carolina, Rodger (Gayle) Smith of Knox and Dale (Fay) Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana and one sister, Janan (Virgil) Brown of Plymouth, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna and one brother, Lawrence. Private services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel, Knox.

MAZEL McCARTY

KNOX, IN - Mazel McCarty, 71, died Saturday, April 8, 2023, in Knox, Indiana. She was born October 22, 1951, in Knox, to the late Andrew and Ellen (Fugate) Wagers.

Mazel was a member of the Holiness Church of God in Knox. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, singing and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Johnie McCarty Jr., two sons: Andrew (Amber) McCarty and Johnnie (Angel) McCarty and one daughter, Marcie (Daniel) Cole, all of Knox, fifteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, two brothers: Taylor Wagers of Knox and Edward James (Sue)Wagers of Charlestown, Indiana and two sisters: Malvanie Clemons and Una Faye (Mike) Brantley, both of Knox.

Services were held Thursday, April 13, at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Knox. Memorials may be made to the family.

Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel, Knox.

HAROLD MANNS

KNOX, IN - Harold Manns, 75, died Monday, April 10, 2023, at his home. He was born March 14, 1948, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to the late Coy Manns and Willie (Rowe) Russell.

Harold enjoyed using his bobcat to plow out all his neighbors when it snowed, joking around, visiting Kentucky, mushroom hunting, going to the picking and grinning, watching NASCAR and spending time with his family. He had worked for Con-Rail Railroad.

He is survived by two daughters: Christina (Gerold) Miller of Plymouth, Indiana and Corinna Sobieck of Knox, one son, Harold Joseph (Hesper) Manns of Plymouth, Indiana, nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one brother, James (Alma) Manns of Knox. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joline Manns, one brother, Charles “Goodboy” Manns and one sister, Sue Dell Manns.

Services were held Friday, April 14, at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Heath Hiatt officiating. Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Knox. Memorials may be made to the family. Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel, Knox.

MARIAN MAY LANDRUM

BUFFALO, IN - Marian May Landrum, 90, died Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at IU Health Memorial Hospital in Monticello, Indiana. She was born January 9, 1933, in Decatur, Illinois, to the late Leslie Felex and Evelyn Blanch (Roberts) Tackett. Marian had worked as a housekeeper and caregiver in the Buffalo area for many years. She enjoyed gardening (especially flowers), writing songs and poetry, and Bible studies.

She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Beadle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, one son, Randall Williams of Buffalo, two granddaughters and eight great grandchildren and one sister, Dorothy Broadaway of South Haven, Indiana. She was preceded in death by siblings: Bob, George and Betty.

Graveside services were held Monday, April 17, at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, Indiana.

Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville, Indiana.

SALLY SWANSON LEWIS

BASS LAKE, IN - Sally Swanson Lewis, 96, died Friday, April 14, 2023, at her home. She was born October 19, 1926, in Streator, Illinois, to the late Ralph and Marian (Schonts) Swanson. On December 27, 1953, at Bass Lake, she married Leland C. “Bud” Lewis. He died August 26, 1993.

Sally was Valedictorian of Knox High School’s class of 1944. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University and was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority.

She is survived by two daughters: Deborah J. Lorenz of Bass Lake and Jennifer L. (Michael) Prorwicz of Chesterton, Indiana and four grandsons. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Susanne G. Lewis, one son, Leland L. Lewis, one brother, Matthew Swanson and one sister, Nancy Swanson.

Private graveside services will be held at Bass Lake Cemetery at Bass Lake.

Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary, Winamac, Indiana.

JEFFREYR. MELTON

GROVERTOWN – Jeffrey R. Melton of Grovertown passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023. He was born on June 12, 1976 in Valparaiso to John O. and the late Glenda (Danner) Melton. He was 46 years-old at the time of his death. He was a highly intelligent man whose career as a Surgical Technician was spent setting up surgical centers throughout Indiana and the Chicagoland area. Jeff had an artistic soul and liked to make things with stained glass as well as constructing sculptures out of metal.

Jeff is survived by one son Parker (fiancée Lindsay) Melton of Peoria, AZ; his father John O. Melton of Grovertown; two brothers John L. (Amy) Melton of Great Falls, VAand Jim Melton of Grovertown. He is preceded in death by his mother Glenda.

There will be a Memorial Service at 12:00 PM CDTSaturday, April 22, 2023 at the Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel. AGathering of Family and Friends will take place from 10:00 AM CDTuntil the time of service also on Saturday, April 22 at the funeral home.

TERRYL. SIMS

GARDEN VALLEY, ID – FORMERLYOF KNOX, IN - Terry

L. Sims, 74, passed away at his home on April 6, 2023.Terry was born on December 20, 1948, in Hanna, Indiana, to Dwain and Marcella Sims, both also formerly of Knox and who predeceased Terry. His son, Jacob Sims predeceased him on October 15, 1971, in Landsthul, Germany.

Terry is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cindy Sims, three children with Janis Sims, his former wife: Jody Sims (Indiana), Jill Sims (Michigan) and Melissa (Sims) Jay (Michigan); one child with his surviving spouse, Melody (Sims) Cole (Idaho) and two step children: Thomas McNutt and Christopher McNutt. He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Paige Bhola, Aliyah Farhan, Wesley Jay, Ben Jay, Tyler Sims, Sawyer Cole and Lane Cole. He has three siblings: Robert Sims (Knox, Indiana), Dwain (Gene) Sims (Culver, Indiana) and Pam (Sims) Berg (Knox, Indiana), all who survive him.

Terry was a veteran having served in the UNited States Army from 1968 until 1971. He was trained at Fort Dix, New Jersey and served in Vietnam, Fort Bliss, Texas and Kaiserslautern, Germany. For his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Expert M-14 Medal. He continued his service in the US Army Reserves for several years.

Terry lived in Knox with his former wife and their children for many years after separating from the military. he worked at Austenal in LaPorte, Indiana for several years and then as a Deputy Jailer at the Starke County Sheriff’s Office. He eventually moved to the west where he married his surviving spouse. In May, 1994, they ultimately settled in Idaho with their child, Melody Cole and his two step children.

From an early age, Terry loved the outdoors. As a child he used to trap wildlife, hunt and fish. Elk became his favorite game to hunt after he moved to the west. he loved to make deer and elk jerky and share it with his family and friends. His favorite hunting partner and best friend, Pastor Bill Devena, predeceased him. His family has visions of Terry and Bill sharing their love of hunting together for eternity.

Terry’s final resting place is at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, Texas, with his son, Jacob Sims
