HOLLYWOOD STARS, ROYALTY

By Friedrich Gomez
This truly unbelievable cover story is divided into two parts: Hollywood stars, Royalty and VIPs you never knew were wizards, and how their most remarkable legacy even helped change the course of human history.
UNKNOWN TO THE WORLD: U.S. GULF WAR GENERAL, NORMAN SCHWARZKOPF, JR. USED HIS POWERS AS A WIZ-
ARD TO WIN MILITARY CAMPAIGNS!
The following exclusive report to The Paper is not only truly shocking – but it is hugely unknown to the entire world!
Even to this very day, in 2025.
The United States Army General, Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. (19342012) who served brilliantly as U.S. Commander of our Coalition Forces
in the Persian Gulf War was not just a casual magician – but a highly accomplished one.
Schwarzkopf was a conjurer of the first-order, skillful enough to officially become an active member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM), the world’s largest professional magic fraternity that encircles the world today in every civilised country.
New York’s legendary magician,
Al Cohen, signed (as a co-sponsor) the application of Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. (then a U.S. Army Colonel at the time) for active membership into the International Brotherhood of Magicians. (All applying members must have a magician-sponsor of good standing in the IBM)
It must be emphasised here that the celebrated Schwarzkopf was far, far more than just being a due-paying member. Schwarzkopf was a prac-

titioner, a true wizard, and he diligently studied theory and principles of magic through the official IBM magic magazine called The Linking Ring, which he received each and every month. The 160page monthly journal of magic was his catnip.
And he would put it to good use in helping to win U.S. military campaigns, believe it not!
Magicians have often been called the “scientists of show business,” and for good reason. After all, magic deals with principles of psychology and the science of misdirection and the art of deception -- and no one knew this better than Schwarzkopf.
As in everything he put his keen, analytical mind to, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. excelled in the magical arts throughout his adult life. So much so, that the brilliant U.S. Army general even employed his magician’s “principles of deception” into his warfare strategy!
Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle

This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy!
I love turning the clocks back so it gets dark by 4pm . . . . . .said no one, ever.
A middle-aged lawyer and an attractive blonde woman are sitting next to each other on a long flight from New York to London. The blonde is trying to get a little sleep, while the lawyer is vainly attempting to impress the blonde with his wit and intelligence. The blonde ignores the lawyer until he suggests a little wager.
Lawyer: Would you like to play a game? I’ll first ask you a question. If you can’t answer it, using any means at your disposal, you give me $5. Then if I can’t answer one of your questions, I’ll give you $500.
And with historic success!
HE STUDIED “THE ART OF WAR” AN ANCIENT TEXT WRITTEN OVER 2,000 YEARS AGO!
“Stormin’ Norman,” as he was nicknamed during the Persian Gulf War (he was also known as “The Bear”), he studied the 2,000-yearolde text called “The Art of War,” written by the ancient Chinese general, military strategist, and philosopher named Sun Tzu (544 BC – 496 BC).
The Art of War is widely considered a stroke of genius in military strategy, tactics and deception.
During the Gulf War in the 1990s, both Generals Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. and Colin Powell employed principles from Sun Tzu which, “related to deception, speed, and striking one’s enemy’s weak points.”
SCHWARZKOPF APPLIED “MAGICIAN TECHNIQUES” IN HIS STRATEGIC WARFARE
Blonde: Sure, why not?
Lawyer: Great. What’s the circumference of the earth?
Blonde: (quietly hands him $5 from her purse) Okay, my turn. What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down the hill with four?
The lawyer is stumped. He starts jotting down ideas, searches the net via the plane’s in-seat phone, then finally calls up a few friends, all without luck. After over an hour, he finally wakes up the blonde and hands her $500. She thanks him for the money and closes her eyes, but the lawyer can’t contain himself.
Lawyer: “Wait! You’ve got to tell me, what was the answer???”
Blonde I don’t know. You win, here’s $5. Then she goes back to sleep. ***
If I had a dollar for everytime I got distracted . . I wish I had a puppy.
I love how in horror movies the victim enters the house and says . .”hello?”
As if the killer would say . . “I’m in the kitchen. Want a sandwich?”
TACTICS!
Although not a magic book but, rather, a military one, “The Art of War” had many parallels to the principles of deception and strategy employed in the magical arts – and General Norman Schwarzkopf’s brilliant mind saw the connection!
When Schwarzkopf joined the magical fraternity (the IBM) as a U.S. Army Colonel, he applied the magician’s exploitation of human perception, deception, false-reasoning, and the golden rule of “thinking 5-steps ahead of the audience” (or in this case, his military foe). Magicians, and their magic, are often shockingly unpredictable – which is an indispensable ingredient which can be used against military opponents, in theatres of operation and strategic warfare tactics, as in a complicated chess game.
Also added into the mix was the bold assumption that magicians seem to do the impossible.
This fed Schwarzkopf’s creative, military mind to break down barriers of successfully doing what was
previously thought “impossible” in warfare tactics. This made General Schwarzkopf not only deceptively clever, but deadly-unpredictable, and often 5-steps ahead of his enemies’ thinking in his Command of Operation Desert Storm.
NORMAN SCHWARZKOPF MENTIONS HIS MAGICIAN SKILLS IN HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL BESTSELLING BOOK “IT DOESN’T TAKE A HERO.”
In his autobiographical 1992 bestselling book, “It Doesn’t Take a Hero,” Schwarzkopf, Jr. reveals in his own words, personal insights, such as being a fine linguist, proud husband and father, and prideful owner of “Bear,” his black Labrador.
He also confesses his skillful life as a magician, and official member of magic’s IBM society.
But, Schwarzkopf only offers a teasing, cursory glance because –as with all magicians -- he doesn’t

tell all his secrets (military or otherwise).
Unknown to most of the civilised world, when General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. passed away on 27 December 2012 at the age of 78, members of his magical brotherhood – his fellow wizards – all saluted him as a proud member of their ranks. The vast membership of the International Brotherhood of Magicians in their secret worldwide clubs (called “Rings”) conducted the solemn ceremony of “Breaking a Wand” in his memory.
Wand breaking symbolises the end of a magician’s journey. It also symbolises the uniqueness of a human being’s life which can never be duplicated.
General Schwarzkopf remained a proud, loyal IBM member to his dying day. He was a true wizard, to his fingertips!
ENGLAND’S WWII “WAR MAGICIAN” WHO FOOLED THE ENEMY WITH HIS WIZARDRY!
It was one of England’s Top Secret WWII “weapons.”
Once given a “Top Secret” classification during the Second World War, this extraordinary true story still remains hugely unknown to much of the civilised world today in 2025 -- 85 years after the fact!
As described in David Fisher’s riveting book “The War Magician,” it tells of the most unlikely, yet remarkably true tale of the man who used the powers of illusion and wizardry to fight the enemy – and created one of the most remarkable feats of deception since the Trojan Horse!
It was an era when England ruled the world of stage magic.
Jasper Maskelyne (1902 – 1973) was a British stage magician in the 1930s and 1940s. He was one of an established family of stage magicians, the son of Nevil Maskelyne and a grandson of John Nevil Maskelyne, a royal dynasty of wizards of which every aspiring magician today is “required” to know, if they are to be considered enlightened.
A patriotic stage wizard, Jasper Maskelyne enlisted in the British Army and offered his “special magical skills” to the War Department, claiming that his talent as an illusionist could be used against the Third Reich.
At first, he was laughed at. “What could we possibly use a magician for?” he was asked.

He went on record replying, “If I could fool an audience only twenty feet away, I could certainly fool the enemy a mile away!”
Skeptical at first, the British commanders grew silent, as they were well aware of the mighty conjuring skills by the Maskelyne dynasty that dominated the magical arts in the world’s greatest theatres.
David Fisher’s book outlines how England’s War Department placed Maskelyne into Camouflage School, where it is said that he succeeded in hiding a Machinegun Bunker so completely that the inspecting General couldn’t find it (even when he was, allegedly, standing right on top of it).
According to Fisher’s narrative, it was said that such thinking was “outside the box,” extremely unconventional and, thus, unfathomable in its ingenuity.
In his book aptly titled “The War Magician” David Fisher states that Jasper Maskelyne and his handpicked crew were sent to North Africa, where British troops were being pounded, mercilessly, by the Desert Fox, the crafty German General, Erwin Rommel (18911944).
His first job was to hide Alexandria Harbour from the Luftwaffe’s nightly bombing raids.
With the magician’s ability of “misdirection” Maskelyne and his team created a realistic fake harbour some miles away, which looked so much like the original that the invading bombers dropped their cargo on the faux harbour instead of the real target. He had camouflaged the real, key British-occupied harbour so effectively that it astonished Maskelyne’s own generals!
Maskelyne helped slowdown Rommel’s charge through a campaign of deception which caused confusion and hesitancy.
It is said that the English illusionist also shielded British troops in

Fisher’s book also claims that Maskelyne camouflaged British weaponry and then used his props with his unique illusionary skills which he applied on stage to baffle audiences, and which he now used to give the approaching enemy on the ground the appearance of a much stronger fighting force awaiting them.
He disguised actual British tanks to look like harmless trucks and vice-versa.
Rommel placed his main forces to oppose, what he thought was a stronger force of British tanks (which in reality, were only empty trucks disguised as tanks).
Meanwhile, the real British ‘tank force’ (disguised as harmless trucks) were about to attack many miles away, against a now, very

Mulholland’s guide book was originally intended for “internal” use and titled “The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception,” but it was eventually declassified and published decades later, revealing the inter-relationship between magic and spycraft.
Much earlier, during World War II, John Mulholland was the only foreign officer in the British Magical Society, and by that time he had studied his craft in 42 countries.
During the Second World War Mulholland wrote a ‘spellbook’ for soldiers. This collection is now owned by American magician/illusionist David Copperfield, who has added it to his vast and priceless magic historical collection, which is housed at a secret location in Nevada.
There were several other magicians, such as David Berglas, Archie Engel, and others who also used their magical talents and secrets to help in the war effort.

When U.S. President Donald Trump, and First Lady, Melania Trump, recently landed in England to visit King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle on 17 September 2025, my coterie of magician friends all smiled at each other as we ate our lunch in the outdoor setting of The Burger Bench on Grand Avenue in downtown Escondido.
Klaus was the first to speak about it with a sly grin on his face as he asked: “I wonder if they (Donald and Melania Trump) know?”
That’s when the four of us suddenly erupted in laughter!
KING CHARLES III IS A HIGH-
LY ACCOMPLISHED WIZARD & MUCH OF THE WORLD IS BOTH SHOCKED & INTRIGUED!
One of the most colourful and fascinating facts about King Charles III is that he is a highly accomplished wizard of the first order. A fact that most of the world has no idea, but would certainly relish and LOVE to know the storyline!
England’s King is no casual hobbyist; quite the contrary: he has practised the conjuring arts and magical arts since his youth!
As did many of his royal kin before him.
In 1975, then-Prince Charles, auditioned and passed a strict and formidable legerdemain (sleight of hand) test to gain rightful membership in England’s most prestigious magic fraternity, The Magic Circle, based in London.
Prince Charles adroitly performed the ancient “Cups and Balls,” considered one of the oldest recorded magic feats, as well as being a magic routine calibrated to test one’s true dexterity and misdirection skills, the quintessential elements in all of magic.
The ancient Cups and Balls magic routine is depicted on the walls of a burial chamber in Beni Hasan, Egypt dated 2500 B.C.
But, just how olde the Cups and
Balls routine truly is before its likeness was drawn upon those ancient Egyptian walls remains shrouded in antiquity.
It was Lord Mountbatten (19001979), King Charles III’s greatuncle (and who was viewed by Charles as an honorary grandfather) who arranged his audition for membership in London’s prestigious Magic Circle.
Britain’s Royal blood courses through the rich tradition of the magical arts.
In 2018, at Prince Charles’ 70th birthday, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh (the youngest sibling of King Charles III) was the afterdinner magician who entertained everyone!
The highlight was when Prince Edward called his own nephew, Peter Phillips, on stage where he proceeded to saw his nephew in half!
And so it remains today, King Charles III, at age 79, is still an active royal member of London’s prestigious Magic Circle, the sister organisation to Hollywood’s world famous Magic Castle, which is tucked up in the Hollywood hills, and is the playground for today’s greatest movie stars, television icons, and legendary recording stars – almost all of whom are “honorary” members who frequent Hollywood’s Magic Castle on a nightly basis.
It remains the favourite of Hollywood notables because the Magic Castle is the world’s most prestigious private club, where even U.S. Presidents, and royalty have safe refuge from the Paparazzi and rabid fans! All guests are forbidden to take photos or ask movie stars, VIPs, or royalty for autographs!
MANY OF HOLLYWOOD’S GREATEST MOVIE STARS WERE ACCOMPLISHED MAGICIANS IN REAL LIFE!
Many of Hollywood’s greatest stars practically “lived” at the Magic Castle. And many were practitioners of the magical arts.
Every major movie star or television icon or world renowned singer has trafficked through the Magic Castle as guests. From past movie greats Tony Curtis (who portrayed Houdini in the 1953 movie of the same name), to the present day, the glitz and glamour of Hollywood is nonstop at the Castle.
Johnny Carson occasionally performed sleight-of-hand magic on his own Tonight Show.
Hollywood’s long, secret loveaffair with the conjuring arts surprises many even today.

5th District Supervisor • Jim Desmond a Win for fire safety and a missed opportunity on Housing

This week, the Board of Supervisors made one decision that will make our region safer — and another that, unfortunately, leaves too many San Diegans behind.
Let’s start with the good news. The Board approved a major investment in wildfire protection, the purchase of a new Sikorsky S-70 Firehawk helicopter.
This is an issue I’ve pushed hard on for months. Back in January, after three North County fires and the devastating fires in Los Angeles, I called for a comprehensive review of our wildfire preparedness and a plan to strengthen our response. The new helicopter is a direct result of that work, and it will make a difference.
The Firehawk has greater water capacity, longer flight time, and can fly at night. That means our firefighters can respond more quickly and with greater force when a fire sparks. Over the past six years, the County has invested in two additional twinengine helicopters, committed $3 million annually for more firefighters, installed helihydrants, and expanded brush management.
We haven’t had a major wildfire in recent years, and that’s not by chance. It’s because we’ve made the right investments. I’m proud to have led the effort to bring this new helicopter to our region, adding another critical tool to protect lives, homes, and neighborhoods.
Now, the bad news.
The Board rejected my proposal to take on one of the biggest challenges facing working families in our county: the housing affordability crisis. My plan would have directed the County to advocate for state legislation restricting foreign investment in entry-level and single-family homes, particularly near military installations and critical infrastructure. It also called for exploring local strategies to give San Diegans a fair shot at buying a home.
This was a common-sense measure. The median home price in San Diego County is now $937,000. Only 8% of young adults under 35 own a home here. More than 70% of families are priced out entirely. Meanwhile, foreign buyers and large corporations are buying homes with all-cash offers that regular families can’t match. Other states have acted to protect their residents.
We should too.
Unfortunately, my colleagues didn’t see it that way, and the measure failed. That’s a setback for working families and young people who still believe in the promise of the American Dream.
The bottom line is this: on wildfire safety, we’ve made tremendous progress, and I’m proud of the leadership it took to get here. On housing, we have a long way to go — and I’m not done fighting.
San Diegans deserve a fair chance to buy a home, raise their families, and feel safe in their communities. I’ll keep working every day to make that happen.

who proved to be skillful magicians in real life might shock you!
They include: Milton Berle, Steve Allen, Walt Disney, Tony Curtis, dancer/actor Fred Astaire, Barbara Stanwyck, Jackie Gleason, Jimmy Stewart, TV game show host Bob Barker, Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, Jerry Lewis, Arsenio Hall, and countless others too numerous to mention.
Actor/director Woody Allen levitated a person on the cover of the Magic Castle’s International Conjuror’s publication called Genii Magazine. And Jason Alexander (“George Costanza” on the Seinfeld sitcom) performed professionally at the Magic Castle – even after becoming a television star!
It’s no secret that television’s most famous talk show host, Johnny Carson, performed as “The Great Carsoni” when he was a small Nebraska boy. (Johnny was born in Iowa, but his parents moved to Norfolk, Nebraska when he was only 8.)
Carson’s first paying gig as a professional magician was at the local Kiwanis Club at Norfolk, Nebraska where he was paid the handsome fee of $3 a show. That translates to $70 in today’s 2025 currency and is not bad wages for a

Orson Welles
14-year-olde, post-Depression-era teenager.
Unlike most boys, Carson was not just temporarily smitten by the conjuring arts during his boyhood years. Far from it. His love-affair with magic would stay-on during his entire adulthood, even unto the grave.
During his late-night reign on The Tonight Show, Johnny Carson often tickled the audience with on-camera feats of sleight-of-hand. Once, after making a coin vanish for a little boy on the set of The Tonight Show, the stunned child asked in disbelief: “How . . . how can I make money really disappear too?”
Johnny’s unscripted reply to the little boy: “Get married!”
But even when Johnny sat as host of NBC’s Tonight Show, he also sat as an illustrious member of the Board of Directors at the world-famous Magic Castle, a private membersonly elegant restaurant and posh nightclub where the world’s greatest magicians perform in various theatres – complete with secret panels and magical doorways where guests can disappear through, and amidst ghostly happenings which take place nightly in underground areas like the Haunted Wine Cellar beneath the mysterious Victorianstyle Magic Castle edifice.
Like J.K. Rowling’s fictional “Hogwarts Castle” the real-life Magic Castle in Hollywood also has a school for young wizards! Note: J.K. Rowling has visited many times over, fascinated by the various sprites and phantoms that sometimes materialize to the great delight of guests!
Like the mysterious Sphinx in ancient Egyptian mythology, the Magic Castle still sits today, nestled up in the famed Hollywood Hills where it has been for over 62 years now, and counting.
It was there, at the private, upscale Magic Castle, where Johnny Carson dined with many of the world’s greatest showbiz legends, such as the great Orson Welles, and others. Like Johnny Carson, the immortal stage and film actor, Orson Welles was a most reputable high-arts magician, as well. Welles performed
special magic-illusion shows for our U.S. military troops during World War II. His stage assistants were none other than movie stars Joseph Cotton and the stunning Rita Hayworth!
A most embarrassing incident occurred at the Magic Castle with equally-embarrassing repercussions which quickly spread throughout the Hollywood community.
Here is what happened.
The Magic Castle has a strict dress code: coat and tie for men, evening apparel for women. This dress code is stringently enforced, regardless of the status of any visitor, be they celebrity, royalty, or President of the United States. When President Reagan visited the Magic Castle, he – as well as his seven Secret Service men – were all appropriately dressed. The President and Mrs. Reagan attended the Magic Castle’s spectacular Houdini Séance. All went well and a most incredible – albeit spooky – evening was enjoyed by all.

Are airline refunds automatic now? For this canceled American Airlines flight, they weren’t.
by Christopher Elliott
All Rhonda Bryant wanted was a refund for her airline ticket. She’d booked three tickets with American Airlines for a trip from Portland, Maine, to San Francisco. But when American canceled her connecting flight from Charlotte to San Francisco after hours of delays, her plans fell apart.
And then American refused to return her money, despite a new federal rule that requires an automatic refund.
American returned only $661 for one leg of the journey but withheld $403 for the flights she never took. Her seven-month fight to recover the rest of her money -- and American’s shifting explanations -- reveal a messy reality behind the federal government’s push to strengthen passenger protections last year.
It also raises questions airlines probably don’t want you to ask:
When does the Department of Transportation require airlines to issue full refunds?

How should travelers escalate a refund request when an airline ignores them?
Why do companies make resolving billing errors so difficult?
But first, let’s take a look at the details of this refund case.
Is this a trip in vain?
Bryant’s ordeal began last spring. After they arrived in Charlotte, her family’s flight to San Francisco
faced repeated delays before being axed. Bryant returned to Maine the next day.
She requested full refunds under a new rule, which mandates a refund when your airline cancels a flight and you don’t accept a rebooking.
American Airlines refunded two tickets promptly. But it balked at refunding the $403 for one of the return legs, erroneously claiming the outbound flight from Portland to Charlotte had been “fully used.”
Over six months, Bryant navigated a maze of calls, online forms, and a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) complaint.
American’s responses ranged from blaming the weather to demanding written permission to discuss the ticket (that’s a common tactic used by European airlines). Three months later, an American Airlines customer relations agent called the cancellation “beyond our control” and refused to issue a refund.
“I’ve made numerous calls and online submissions requesting full refunds for our three tickets,” she wrote in an email to my advocacy team. “Can you help me?”
This looked like a slam-dunk case for my advocacy team. Bryant needed to be in San Francisco for an event, which she missed because of the American cancellation. The airline had refunded some but not all of her tickets, which suggests a
Irrational fears travelers have -- and what to do about them.
by Christopher Elliott
The holiday travel season is right around the corner, and what better time than now to face your travel fears -- especially your irrational ones?
Sienna Hart’s phobia is losing her passport. She constantly -- and obsessively -- checks to make sure her ID is in her pocket when she travels abroad.
“I’ve even been known to pat it mid-flight, just to confirm it’s still there,” adds Hart, a vice president of sales for a social media company in New York. “The ritual is peak irrationality.”
She’s right. Only about 0.1 percent of Americans lose their passport every year according to the State Department, and with her compulsive checking, she’s probably not going to be one of them.
“Travel is an area where people often encounter anxiety that may not have logical grounding,” says Savana Howe, a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating anxiety disorders. “It affects their travel experience.”
Irrational fears are all around us when we travel, from the fear of missing out to the fear of not being understood. But why are these fears irrational? And how can you position your next trip to ensure these fears don’t get the better of you?
There’s a long list of phobias and irrational behaviors that travelers pack for every trip.
“Travel comes with plenty of whatifs,” says Terry Boynton, president of Yonder Travel Insurance. “It’s normal to feel nervous about the unexpected.”
Here are a few highlights:
fear of missing out. “One of the most common irrational fears is the idea that if you don’t book everything six months out, you’ll be stuck in a subpar hotel or miss out entirely,” says Charlie Neville, a marketing director at JayWay Travel. He’s seen travelers panic-book flights and accommodations, only to find they missed better routes, new boutique hotel openings, or price drops just a few weeks later.
fear of being a crime victim. Roni Weiss sees it all the time. “There are people who refuse to get off cruise ships or go outside of their all-inclusive resorts because they are irrationally worried,” says Weiss, the executive director of Travel Unity, a nonprofit organization. “But these places possibly have less crime than the visitors have back home.”

fear of public transportation. Many American travelers assume mass transit is dangerous, even when it’s a perfectly safe way of getting around. “It’s an irrational fear,” says Alexis McCray, a licensed psychotherapist with Elevated Horizons Mental Health. In fact, in many cities, mass transit is the best and most cost-effective way to get around.
fear of your luggage being stolen. Some travelers are so worried about their luggage getting damaged or stolen during travel that they go to extreme lengths, like shrink-wrapping their bags. “While luggage mishandling does happen, the anxiety behind this behavior is often exaggerated,” says Howe, the psychologist. “Most airlines and airports have protocols in place to protect luggage. The desire to prevent theft or damage leads to unnecessary actions that don’t provide much extra protection.”
fear of not being understood. While it’s true that there are places where no one speaks English, they’re few and far between. “I can count on one hand the number of times that I truly was up against a language barrier,” says Kiya Thompson, a family travel coach. And there’s always Google Translate and hand gestures to get you through. “When languages clash, the human heart still connects,” she adds. How true.
I have two irrational fears. First, I’m afraid I’ll leave something important behind. (Actually, this isn’t completely unjustified. I’ve left electric toothbrushes, razors, adapters and once, I even abandoned an iPad at a hotel.) And the second one is not being allowed into a coun-
try because I forgot to apply for a visa. That happened to me once, when I was flying to Australia, but it was quickly remedied by downloading the AustralianETA app and filling out the necessary paperwork. (Phew, that was a close one!)
But the fears are irrational in the sense that with a little preparation, you don’t have to worry about them.
How to Overcome Your Fears
Most of us, including me, have a short list of travel phobias. The question is, how do you overcome them?
Experts say a little preparation can help allay these fears. Research will reveal that there are plenty of rooms and flights even if you book a few weeks out. It will also show that taking the train from the airport into town is the most efficient and safe way to get into town. And yes, those airport vendors that wrap your checked luggage in plastic are a rip-off.
Once you label a fear as irrational, you can explore it with curiosity rather than panic, according to Anand Mehta, a family therapist in San Diego.
“You can say, OK, I’m feeling nervous. Let’s look at why I’m worried,” says Mehta. “In doing so, you shift from being controlled by the fear to understanding it.”
He says that’s empowering because you can gather facts about safety records and statistics, such as airline safety records or hotel cleanliness policies.
“This helps ground you in reality,”
he adds. And it can help you overcome your irrational fears.
“When you know these fears are irrational, you can be more confident and take practical steps to mitigate your risks, rather than succumbing to the anxiety that may prevent you from enjoying your trip,” says John Gobbels, the chief operating officer of Medjet.
How to Benefit from Common Travel fears
But who am I kidding? People will always do irrational things when they travel. The real question is, how can you take advantage of these phobias?
Zigging when the crowd zags is a time-honored contrarian strategy. Enjoy the faster train (with plenty of available seats) while everyone else waits in a long line for an Uber. Save money by waiting to book your trip until closer to your travel date. Look like a confident traveler by not shrink-wrapping your bag.
Mostly, though, you can breathe a little easier, knowing you have less to worry about than you think. For the rest, says Yonder’s Boynton, there’s always travel insurance.

grocery outlet’s Joe & Chris Caro Value Community and Connection
In a city that values community and connection, it’s always refreshing to see new faces who bring both experience and heart to the table. Joe and Chris Caro, the husband-andwife duo behind Escondido’s Grocery Outlet, are two of those people. They have more than 30 years of retail experience between them, both in store and corporate setting.
A few years ago, they decided it was time to leave the corporate world behind and invest their energy into something more personal — a locally owned grocery store focused on people and community. “We wanted to take everything we’ve learned over the years and put it into a place that truly serves the customers and community”.
Joe shared, “Our goal is to be Escondido’s hometown store — a place where people get know us, feel welcome, and know they’re getting great quality and value.”
“Escondido has a great small-town feel,” said Chris. “The people are genuine, and the community really supports local businesses.”
Inside their store, customers will find a shopping experience that blends value, variety, and freshness. The Caros have expanded their store’s offerings to feature more NOSH (Natural, Organic, Specialty, Healthy) products, highlighted by bright green signage throughout the aisles. “In our store, fresh is king,” Joe emphasized. “We’re working hard to provide the freshest produce at the best prices in town. We’re also focusing on organic produce, grassfed meats, and expanding our Hispanic and Asian selections to give customers the variety they’re looking for.”
Looking ahead, the Caros also have plans to better serve Escondido’s senior community. “We’re developing a new senior discount program to roll out next year,” Joe noted. “We want to make it easier for seniors to find healthy meals, supplements, sugar-free options, and affordable products that fit fixed budgets.”
Now, let’s talk Wine. Chris and Joe have an impressive knowledge of wine. They bring over 25 years of wine knowledge—from casual sipping to knowledge in varietals, grape growing, winemaking, and Chris’s favorite - food pairing. She loves how wine elevates everything from simple appetizers to fine dining and often incorporates it into her cooking. With experience in the Temecula wine industry and a 25+ year friendship with a sommelier, Chris brings a unique perspective that helps us offer a wine experience you won’t find at other retailers. We’re constantly
expanding our wine selection, adding new finds weekly—including highly rated, hard-to-find bottles, plus organic and non-alcoholic options you won’t see elsewhere.
Speaking about great wine deals, don’t miss our 20% off Spring and Fall wine events! (the next one is November 5–11).
App users get early access and 25% off on November 3–4. And yearround, enjoy 10% off any case of wine.
At the end of the day, the Caros’ mission is simple — to build a true hometown grocery store where shoppers feel appreciated and see their money go further. “We love getting to know our customers,” Chris said. “It’s the relationships and trust we build that make this all worthwhile.”
For Joe and Chris Caro, the business may be new, but their dedication to quality, community, and customer care runs deep.
You can visit the Escondido Grocery Outlet, located at 1516 East Valley Parkway, where, as the Caros like to say, “We Appreciate Your Business.”

The Pastor says . . . Living What We believe
The Bible gives us a good rule for living our lives with decision. In the book of James 1:22, we read “Be you doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” While this connects to the believers in the religious community, it is a fundamental rule for everyday living. Just think of all those we know who tell us what they will do or want to do. Many people fill pages with empty promises and unfulfilled goals. Yet, we have examples of individuals who not only believe in their words but also act on their beliefs. We have those who change the world through their actions. We also have many who leave behind shattered promises and a legacy that is minimal to nonexistent. I want to share the stories of a few who have made a difference through their words, beliefs, and actions.
October 31, 1517, marked a turning point in the Christian Church, driven by one man’s unwavering faith. We mark that day not as Halloween Day but a day of reformation in the belief of thousands of people today, known as Reformation Sunday. What was that day, and who was the person? The day was just an ordinary one, but the person was no ordinary man. Martin Luther was a priest in the Roman Catholic Church who believed that salvation came through faith in Christ alone, rather than through the purchase of indulgences that paid one’s way out of Purgatory. In opposition to that teaching, Martin Luther nailed ninety-five written statements to the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany. This marked the beginning of the Reformation movement, which paved the way for thousands of subsequent religious movements. His belief led to his actions. On October 31, we recognize Reformation Day.
That tradition is marked by the Civil War with Abraham Lincoln, who believed in the dignity of every human being and the integrity of this nation. On April 12, 1861, Lincoln took a bold step, guided by his belief, to wage a war that would transform not only this nation but also continue to reflect his enduring beliefs. He was not only a sayer of the word but also a doer.
Following his belief is the legacy of a man who believed in the freedom of all in this country, Martin Luther King. Against unimaginable opposition, he stood forth with belief and words to forge action for human rights. Many preceded him in this goal, but he was the one who not only believed in it and sought to act upon it, but also carried it out. Today, there are thousands who not only believe but also live out the words and actions. More recently, we have witnessed a man with belief and action, Charlie Kirk. This cost him his life, just as it did King and Lincoln, and it was a constant threat to Luther. Should belief and action cost a person their life? It could be because even ‘the Christ’ said it would and did cost him his life. We have some indication of Charlie’s life, but the evils he spoke about required belief and action to make a difference.
Do we put these men on the same pedestal? Many challenged and condemned Luther, Lincoln, King, Jesus Christ, and Charlie Kirk. Still, they were all men of belief and action who impacted thousands, if not millions, of persons. Time reveals many things, and many have left us with nothing but destruction in their paths. But those who believed in God and His ways have left us with the evidence of their belief and actions, giving us a more perfect way.

Most folks reading this column are 40 years old or older. We are called DIs (digital immigrants) because we became adults prior to the IW (intelligent web). Today we comprise about half of America’s population. The average lifespan for Americans between the age of 40 and 60 is 79, At 70 it is 85 for men and 87 for women. At 80 men can expect to live for 7 more years and women 9. A 90 year old man has a life expectancy of 4.3 years and his 90 year old girlfriend 4.9. So it looks like we are catching up to the girls.
We (Homo Sapiens) formed our intellectual resources during the

Here come the holiday pet safety tips. You’re probably thinking, “I knew that, but remind me anyway.”
So, here are reminders to keep your pets safe this Halloween weekend.
Halloween can scare the Shinola out of pets. They’re having a quiet evening at home. Then, WHAM! The doorbell rings, kids in costumes shout “Trick or Treat,” they take our stuff, then run away. We nervously wait for the next “Ding Dong.” For dogs who think it’s their job to protect the house, it’s confusing.
Here come the safety tips. Go on. You know you want to read them.

past 300,000 + years. Early in the 21st century we released the AI (artificial Intelligence) abetted IW (intelligent web). The IW has become an ever more effective substitute for human internal cognizant resources (intelligence) and is credited with somewhat reduced IQ (intelligence quotient) scores among 30 and younger DNs (digital natives). The IW can store and access far more information than can be stored by any human and can process this information for answers and solutions far quicker and more reliably than human internal resources. It appears that the IW may negatively impact user mental assets by reliance on the IW instead of our own cognitive resources in data storage and solution provision. Will the IW have a continuing negative affect on our intellectual assets? Perhaps, but human experience indicates that would be an unlikely long term result. Our bodies and senses adapt as technology changes our physical and sensory needs. Our minds also find ways to adapt to lifestyle changes. Cars, supermarkets and houses replaced walking, hunting and caves. We’re probably not as strong as when we lived in caves and our sense of smell, hearing and sight are not as keen, but we have what we need to navigate in our world just as they did in theirs.
We humans have never been very
good at predicting our own future. Past efforts to stave off “progress” have typically not gone well for us. There have always been the “Stop the World” types screaming “We’re going to hell in a handbasket” In spite of our mistakes, fumbles and moving “by fits and starts”, in general mankind seems to be moving in a positive direction. Our modern lives are continuously served by technology that didn’t exist in grandfathers day. While we sometimes long for the bucolic, uncomplicated and peaceful, old days, that is simply a myth. Moving back through time finds life harder, more dangerous and with far fewer options. If living
in a log cabin with a garden and a fishing hole sounds good to you., you’re probably fooling yourself.
As Americans today we live in a paradise when compared to earlier times. Life may seem to us to be harder and more complicated than ever before. But every generation feels the same way about their lives and times. Today we are healthier, live longer and have more options than at any time in history. What does our future hold? Will we become brain dead zombies, slaves to our own technology or will we use our growing technology to vault to new and yet unimagined heights? Que sera sera!

treaters might not want to be greeted by a dog. Find a safe place for your pet to escape the commotion.
• Scared pets are more likely to “door dash.” Once they’re outside there are more trickor-treaters. So, they run until they’re lost, or they hide. You DO NOT want to spend Halloween night or the next several days searching for your scaredy cat.
• I’m not a fan of pet costumes, but if you are, make sure they’re safe, fit properly, and don’t restrict your pet’s vision. If you’re going out at night, the costume and leash need to be reflective.
• DO NOT force your pet to wear a costume it does not want.
• I discourage taking your dog trick-or-treating. But if you insist, make sure Mom or Dad always holds the leash and stays away from the door. A dog or cat inside might feel threatened by another dog at its door.

• Don’t give your pets candy or leave it out where they can get to it. And dispose of the wrappers safely. And watch out during your walks after Halloween for candy wrappers dropped by trick or treaters.
• You knew this was coming. NO BOOZE for pets!
Is Halloween dangerous for black cats? Do cults try to get them for
sacrifices or torture?
I called shelters and veterinary clinics across the country. They said Halloween isn’t any more dangerous for black cats than any other night. Some people want them for “props” during their parties, then return them afterward. But, torture or sacrifice? Nope.
Still, keep them indoors and safe. They’re hard to see in the dark.

day evenings at 7 pm at San Marcos Lutheran Church, 3419 Grand Avenue. Male singers interested in learning more about barbershopstyle singing are always welcome to attend. There are no formal auditions, just a voice check to see which voice part (Tenor, Lead, Bass, or Baritone) best suits you. We encourage visitors to sing with us. Prior musical experience is helpful but not a necessity. We will seat you between 2 veteran singers to help you along. And we can provide you audio learning tracks to help you learn the music.
Currently, we are offering an opportunity for interested male singers to perform with us at Holiday concerts in December if they: A) attend weekly rehearsals on a fairly regular basis from now through December; and B) become proficient at singing our Christmas repertoire (memorize a short list of songs and be able to sing the others with music). This is a great chance to try a cappella singing in the Barbershop style with a dedicated, fun group of guys!

However, this same respect for Castle rules did not occur with Johnny Carson’s younger, brother, Dick Carson, who was producerdirector of The Tonight Show at the time.
Here are the sordid details.
Magic Castle founder, Milt Larsen (1931-2023) whom I affectionately called “Uncle Miltie,” personally told me of one high-profile occasion where the criterion for attire was challenged.
Johnny Carson’s younger brother, Dick Carson, once showed up at the celebrated Castle foyer, by himself, but without a tie. Anticipating such scenarios, the Castle keeps a handy supply of ties for guests who may have forgotten to put one on.
The front-desk host offered Dick Carson a complimentary tie for the evening – but he flatly refused to wear it. Dick was reminded of protocol: No tie, no entrance.
In turn, Dick reminded the hostess who he was, implying that he was above such rules.
The situation escalated as both sides remained steadfast.
Unable to reach a resolution, the hostess called upstairs to speak with Castle founder & owner, Milt Larsen. Informed of the stalemate in the downstairs lobby, Milt placed a call to Johnny Carson and asked him to make a ‘judgement call,’ regarding his brother, Dick.
An honorable member of the Magic Castle, himself, Johnny Carson’s blew a fuse and shouted over the telephone to my Uncle Miltie: “PUT MY GODDAMNED BROTHER ON THE PHONE!”
Uncle Miltie proceeded to tell me that, “Johnny apparently read his brother the Riot Act, and that was that.”
Dick Carson put on the tie.
No one outside of a straitjacket
would have dared disparage the honour and traditions of magic in front of the King of Late Night Talk Show, Johnny Carson.
But even magician Johnny Carson was struck powerless in producing the one guest he forever dreamed of having on his Tonight Show set: the legendary movie star, Cary Grant.
Throughout the years as host of The Tonight Show, Carson often said his number-one fantasy guest would be – without question – Cary Grant. (Johnny Carson was often in the company of Cary Grant but was unable to get him to appear as a Tonight Show guest.)
Sadly, this Carson dream-guest never materialised, despite Johnny’s constant urgings and pleas to his Hollywood idol, Cary Grant.
Ironically, Hollywood’s greatest and most famous movie star at the time, Cary Grant was also a professional-level stage magician and -- as with Johnny Carson – Grant also served on the Board of Directors at the Magic Castle.
What Johnny Carson and the movers-and-shakers of world entertainment were unable to do -- the Magic Castle could, and did.
That is, Cary Grant not only appeared regularly at the Magic Castle, but he occasionally performed his magic act there, under the showbiz moniker, “The Great Carini.”
Unsuccessfully wooed for years as a Tonight Show guest, Cary Grant easily acquiesced as a performing magician at the elegant Palace of Mystery showroom inside the Magic Castle, but, never outside those hallowed halls.
No amount of money from outside sources could entice Grant to perform his unique magical talents for

I hate it when someone says, “I used to have a crush on you!”
What am I supposed to do with an expired crush?
1. In the 1400s a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have ‘the rule of thumb.’
2. Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented. It was ruled ‘Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden’... and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.
3. Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history: Spades - King David, Hearts - Charlemagne, Clubs -Alexander the Great, Diamonds - Julius Caesar
4. In Shakespeare’s time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase......... ‘goodnight, sleep tight.’
5. It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink.
Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.
6. In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts...
So in old England , when customers got unruly, the bartender would
MIGHTY MOJO
yell at them ‘Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down.’
It’s where we get the phrase ‘mind your P’s and Q’s’
7. Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service.
‘Wet your whistle’ is the phrase inspired by this practice.
A baby’s laughter is one of the most beautiful sounds you’ll ever hear.
Unless it’s 3am, you’re home alone, and you don’t have a baby.

Stopped by a roadside stand with a sign that said, “Lobter tails, $2.”
I paid my $2 and he says, “Once upon a time there was this lobster . . .”
I hate it when people say, “take it one day at a time.”

Candy so expensive I had to buy the bootleg kind.

general public consumption. Johnny Carson was left with his last best hope -- to sit in the Magic Castle audience and watch his favourite movie-star idol, Cary Grant, perform what they both passionately shared since boyhood: an undying love for the magical craft.
Even to this very day in 2025, most of the world never knew – and still doesn’t – that Cary Grant was such a high-powered, professional wizard to his fingertips!
Fellow Nebraskan and former television personality, Dick Cavett, first met an unknown Johnny Carson through magic. Both were practising wizards when their paths first crossed in 1952 when Carson performed his magic act at a Church function in Lincoln, Nebraska. Although 11 years younger than Johnny Carson at the time, the 16year-olde Cavett could more than hold his own in the magic arena. In 1952, the same year they both met, the much younger Cavett would attend the International Brotherhood of Magicians convention in St. Louis where he won the top trophy for “Best New Performer In Magic.”
Throughout the respective lifetimes of Johnny Carson and Dick Cavett, both men remained dyedin-the-wool practitioners of leg-

simple accounting error. And, of course, there was the new federal rule. The refund should have been automatic. Right?
The Department of Transportation’s 2024 rule clarifies refund rights: Passengers get money back if they miss trips due to cancellations or delays of three hours (domestic) or six hours or more (international).
Most importantly, the rule applies even if the disruption stems from weather or other “uncontrollable” issues.
American initially stonewalled Bryant by citing bad weather -- a classic dodge. But the rule doesn’t care why your flight got canceled. If you bail because of a major schedule change, you’re owed a full refund, not just vouchers.
But wait. Bryant did fly from Portland to Charlotte before turning around and flying home. She used part of her ticket. Isn’t American Airlines right?
Not really. Airlines like American

erdemain (sleight of hand). Their passion for magic never subsided but only increased with the years. True magicians, to the core.
Famous comedian, Steve Martin, remains to this very day a topdrawer professional magician. Martin became a magician in early boyhood, then blossomed into the professional ranks, eventually working as a magic demonstrator at Disneyland’s Main Street Magic Shop, at Anaheim, California, during the late 50s and early 60s.
Aside from Steve Martin, there remains a lengthy list of many other famous individuals who actually be-
have “trip in vain” policies. Here’s American’s rule:
“When a customer is flown to an intermediate point, through stop point, or lands in a diversion city due to an irregular operation, which may not get them to their final destination, they may choose to discontinue their journey and return back to their origination city,” it notes.
Translation: If they can only get a passenger halfway to their destination, as was the case with Bryant and her party, it wouldn’t count as a used ticket.
In fact, it’s commonly understood in the airline industry that “almost” doesn’t count, and that a trip in vain such as the one Bryant took would not count as a half-used ticket.
Bryant’s paper trail -- 14 emails, a federal complaint, and a letter -- shows an exhaustive escalation ladder over almost seven months. Here’s the process:
Always start with the airline’s customer service, and in writing.
No luck? File a Department of Transportation complaint, which
came highly-skillful conjurers, an art form which followed them well into their adult life. Television and motion picture actor, Neil Patrick Harris, former star of “Doogie Howser, M.D.” and “How I Met Your Wife,” is a top-drawer magician today and has been appointed President of the Board of Directors at Hollywood’s Magic Castle for two terms.
For well over 40 years, boxing super-legend, Muhammad Ali (19422016), had courted a deep, abiding passion for magic – as both a spectator and performer. And the king of boxing has had some pretty heavyweight names in magic to both teach and advise him on his performance skills.
Getting pointers from such wizards as Jimmy Grippo, resident magician at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas as far back as 1975, to his friendship with master illusionist, David Copperfield, Muhammad Ali has earned high praise.
Though Ali loved performing close-up magic, he also relished the bigger illusions such as levitating his bodyguards!
Of the champ’s unique levitation performance, David Copperfield said, “He does a classic levitation – classic – but he added his bodyguards!”
During this magical time of year I have performed over half a dozen magic shows! One of my favourite memories, however, will always
forces a response within 30 days.
Still nothing? Contact your credit card issuer to dispute the charge. As a last resort, loop in a consumer advocate or attorney.
But timing matters. Bryant waited 48 days after American’s final rejection to seek help, close to the 60-day limit required under the Fair Credit Billing Act for credit card disputes. You want to be patient, but not that patient.
But there’s a bigger question here: Why is this even happening?
American’s runaround -- demanding redundant paperwork, slow-walking responses -- isn’t accidental. The more hoops it makes customers jump through, the fewer refunds an airline has to pay.
And even knowing the rules is only step one of what could be a tedious journey. A 2023 study by AirHelp found 71 percent of passengers eligible for flight compensation never claim it. Why? Half called the process “too complicated.” Most people quit after the first “no.” That’s why the government instituted a new rule in 2024.
be my special Magic Dinner Show I once did for the Escondido Women’s Club, when my publisher/ editor lyle e. davis sat in the front row with Evelyn Madison who is still an active member of the Escondido Women’s Club as well as a former employee of our weekly publication,The Paper. It was Evelyn who booked me.
(Thanks ‘mom.’)
To all our readership, here and around the United States (I know because I’m in charge of mailing out all the weekly subscriptions of The Paper here and beyond California)-- to all of you I say: May God bless and forever hold you in the hollow of His Hand. And to my rabid fans who follow me online, viz. the U.K, Germany, and Austria – I love you with all my heart.

But was that rule enough? No. The government implemented the rule just after her flight, and she fought American Airlines just as a new administration took over -- an administration that appeared to have little interest in enforcing the new rule.
It’s likely that if my advocacy team hadn’t gotten involved, Bryant would have lost the $403 she spent on her ticket to San Francisco. But that’s not how this case ended. We contacted American Airlines on her behalf, and it issued a full refund.
Based on this case and several others, it’s clear that the new rule requiring an automatic refund may be unenforced for the next four years. My advocacy team and I hope that’s not the case, but we are ready if it is.

County Launches New Alert San Diego App to Replace SD Emergency
By Sir Milo Loftin, County of San Diego Communications Office
The County of San Diego’s emergency information app has a new name, a new look, and new features to help keep you safe.
SD Emergency is now Alert San Diego. The updated app is part of the County Office of Emergency Services’ (OES) modernized emergency communication system, providing quick access to official alerts, interactive maps, preparedness tips, and recovery resources — all in one place.
Residents who already have the SD Emergency app downloaded should update it now to continue receiving push notifications and official information from County emergency managers. The SD Emergency app will be retired in 90 days.
The Alert San Diego app works in concert with AlertSanDiego.org, where residents can register to receive phone, text, or email alerts for their neighborhood, just as they did with the previous system.

• Clean, simplified design: Modern, easy-to-use interface with intuitive navigation for quick access to vital emergency information.
• Expanded emergency updates:

The most Polarizing Halloween Candy of 2025
by The Vending Company
Everyone’s been doing research about the best Halloween candy, but we’re asking the most important question during the spookiest season of the year...
What’s the worst Halloween candy that’s going to sit in your pantry all year long? We all know that one brand of candy that gets left at the bottom of your plastic Jack O’Lantern bucket every year — or do we?
We have the answers to the best (and most importantly worst) Halloween candy — broken down by every state.
The Vending Company asked over 1,700 Americans a question that has haunted candy bowls for decades:
Which Halloween treats make you smile—and which ones sit in your pantry until next year?
Our nationwide survey breaks down the most loved and most loathed candies across the U.S., with insights by state and age group. Whether you’re a die-hard candy corn defender or a passionate peanut butter cup purist, the results might surprise you.
Let’s unwrap the truth about America’s Halloween candy obsessions.
• Candy corn is the most disliked candy across all 50 states. While all of our top four candies were polarizing, only candy corn received a net negative score.
• Kit Kat is the most polarizing Halloween candy in America. It is America’s most and least favorite candy — but it all depends who you ask.
• Werther’s Originals are the least popular Halloween candy in America. Only 28 people out of 1736 said it was their favorite.
• The most disliked candy by generation include: Peanut M&Ms for Gen Z, candy corn for Millennials and Baby Boomers, and Kit Kats for Gen X.
americans are divided on their candy preferences.
We found that Americans are incredibly divisive about their candy preferences. The top four most liked candies were also the most disliked candies. We tallied up the number of likes vs. dislikes, and found that Kit Kats, Snickers, Peanut M&Ms, and candy corn were both loved and hated.
