2025 Mother’s Day Edition

Humor Affordable Places to Take Mom And A Quiz

Motherhood often requires some comedic relief – especially when you’re exhausted, covered in vomit and probably haven’t showered in two days.

Or perhaps you’re on day two of a stand-off with your teenager who refuses to shower. It really depends on where you are in life

Luckily there are lots of funny moms out there talking about the wild journey of giving birth to children and

then raising them into semi-decent, semi-normal human beings.

WHAT’S IN THIS SPECIAL MOTHER’S DAY ISSUE OF THE PAPER?

This Special 2025 Mother’s Day Edition of The Paper will have three primary fun and exciting sections intertwined throughout:

1. Unforgettable true life Mother’s Day anecdotes and humour.

2. And no Special Mother’s Day

Edition would be complete without a fun, interactive, multiplechoice quiz which the whole family can enjoy and participate in: select teams, keep score, and have one person in charge of reading the multiple-choice questions and answers out loud.

3. During these difficult economic times, as a public service, towards the end portion of this cover story we will list some affordable but memorable and most exciting places to treat Mom that she’ll never, ever forget -- and all

without “breaking the bank!”

TRUE LIFE MOTHER’S DAY HUMOUR.

“What’s Your Real Age?”

My friend Emily and her mother bumped into an old family acquaintance on the street and the real conversation went as follows:

FAMILY ACQUAINTANCE:

“Is this your daughter!? Gosh, I remember when she was only this

Mother’s Day from page 1

high!” (As the woman said this, she lowered her hand to indicate a smaller child as she remembered). Still astonished at how fast time flies, the woman had to ask, “So, how old is your daughter now?”

EMILY’S MOTHER (without pausing) answered:

“Oh, she’s 24.”

(Emily, who was really 35, almost fainted on the spot, but, said nothing to correct her mom.)

But after the woman left, Emily turned and asked her mother why she told such a whopper?

“Emily,” her mother calmly explained, “I’ve been lying about my age for so long, it suddenly dawned on me that I’d have to start lying about yours, too!”

(The above Mother’s Day story was submitted by Robert Lee Whitmire.)

WHICH U.S. STATE (CONSISTENTLY) HAS THE YOUNGEST AVERAGE AGE FOR FIRSTTIME MOTHERS?

Give Us This Day Our

Daily Chuckle

This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy!

Sad news — the inventor of autocorrect collapsed in the street yesterday.

He was taken by ambience to the nearest horse piddle.

A. California B. New York C. Mississippi

Now remember, each correct answer is worth 10 points, so if your team just agreed to select “C” for Mississippi, well, your team is off to a perfect start!

The U.S. state with the youngest average age for first-time mothers is (consistently): Mississippi.

MOTHER’S DAY HUMOUR: “I KNOW CPR!”

Talea Torres shares this Mother’s Day funny anecdote.

My mother had just finished taking a CPR class at a local college when she and I were in the shopping mall and we saw a huge crowd and a lot of commotion and frightened people gathered around a fallen body.

Mom took off running at a speed I didn’t know she was capable of, all the while yelling:

“EVERYBODY BACK! I KNOW CPR!”

Just as my mom threw herself next to the motionless body and was about to start chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth CPR, a pair

of strong hands pulled her to her feet and said:

“Ma’am, we’re police officers. We’re trying to arrest this man!”

WHAT IS THE (AVERAGE AGE) IN THE U.S. FOR A WOMAN TO HAVE HER FIRST CHILD & BECOME A MOTHER?

A. 23

B. 25

C. 27

For another valuable 10 points, what did your team decide? If your team selected “C” for 27 years as the average age for a first-time mother in America today, well, your team has a razor sharp competitive edge -- cause your right on the money!

In 2024 to mid-2025 today, the average age for a woman in America to have her first child is around 27.5 years old. This represents a record high for the country, driven by declining teen pregnancies, and reflecting a trend where women are increasingly delaying motherhood to focus on careers, education, and other life goals including building financial stability.

A quick glance below shows the fascinating trending regarding the

average age of motherhood down through the decades in the America:

In 2020: Average age for first-time mothers was roughly the same as today: 27.4 years old.

In 2010: Average age for first-time mothers was approximately 25.3 years old.

In 1970: Average age for a woman to have her first child in the U.S. was 21.4 years.

In 1950: Average age for a woman to have her first child was around 21.1 years.

In 1930: Average age for a woman to have her first child was around 21 years old.

MEETING THE DAUGHTERIN-LAW

My cousin was in love and wanted to introduce his bride-to-be to his hypercritical mother.

But in order to get an unbiased opinion, he invited over three other female friends as well and didn’t tell his mom which one he intended to marry.

Sunshine Sue - a confession . . .

Long time ago, when first starting out in radio, I had the all night show, “ at KBON, Omaha, Nebraska.

The all night show is where many young radio broadcasters began their career. It can get boring. Record after record, hardly any commercials, lots of PSA’s (Public Service Announcements) which don’t generate any revenue for the station as they are programmed free of charge.

I remember the first night I went on the air and followed the station format of which records to play, in what order. It’s called the “rotation,” a station format you follow, playing the top records in a certain sequence, news at the top of the hour and the bottom of the hour and station breaks, as I recall every 15 minutes. In between you played the records.

I can remember coming home from work that morning and going to bed. Visions of a platter going round and round and round stuck in my head and I kept hearing Fats Domino’s “I Wanna Walk You Home . . “ over and over and over. Finally, I fell asleep.

I guess I did this job about a year or two. One thing that sometimes kept the job from being too boring was the telephone. Lonely listeners would call up at all hours of the night, requesting a record be played . . . sometimes just to chat a bit.

I had one gal that constantly called. “Hi . . . .I’d love to hear Johnny Mathis. It would, you know . . . put me in the mood.” Her name was Sunshine Sue and she had a voice that would melt a frozen stick of butter. I can’t mimic in writing the warm syrupy voice she had but it went something like . . . “Hyeeeee . . . (mmmmm) . . this is . . Sunshine Sue . . . (deep, sexy breath) (sexy whispery voice . . .) I’d just (mmmm) love to hear some . .. Johnny Mathis (deep, sexy breath) It’d, you know (said slyly and sexily) put me in the . . . (mmmm) mood.”

Well! I’m a young 22 or 23 year old red blooded male . . . purely for the sake of courtesy and station public relations, you understand . . . I just HAD to meet . . . Sunshine Sue.

One morning she broke the ice by asking if she could come by the station and say hello. Could she? Could she? Hell yes, she could!

Thinking out my battle plan: 3am. Only a security guard down stairs,

five floors down. I’d call him and alert him that I was expecting a guest, that it was okay to let her in and put her on the elevator.

No one else in the building but me. Lots of long playing records I could line up, giving me plenty of time to visit or, you know. . . with Sunshine Sue. (Harry Belafonte’s album was great if you needed time to go down the hall to the bathroom; Marty Robbins original version of “El Paso” was about 4.5 minutes long if you just needed a really quick trip to the john. I had ALL the long playing records lined up.

It was about 3am and she was due any minute. My mind boggled at what might transpire that morning. I was looking forward to this adventure . . . and then it was shattered.

The cleaning lady showed up. Of all times to clean the offices! She was gonna kill the moment. No private, intimate moments with Sunshine Sue. I had to do something.

I hurried out to the lobby/reception area and accosted the lady. She was older, I suppose in her 50’s, wrinkled gingham type dress, wore glasses with one lens frosted over,

After the four women left, he asked his mother, “Can you guess which one I want to marry?”

Immediately his mother answered: “The one with short hair.”

Shocked beyond belief, he said: “Yes! Yes! But . . . how’d you know that?!”

And his mother shrugged and said: “Because that’s the one I didn’t like!”

WHAT IS THE OLDEST (CONFIRMED) AGE IN THE U.S. THAT A WOMAN GAVE BIRTH TO BECOME A MOTHER?

A. 57 B. 62 C. 71

Be careful now. There’s another 10 points up for grabs. If your team agreed on “B” for 62-years-old as their answer, well, congratulations! Your team is on the way to grab this Mother’s Day version of the Olympic Gold Medal!

Although it is difficult to arrive at an unequivocal answer since reliable birth records did not always exist in earlier, remote regions of the U.S., nonetheless, we can say with certainty that “one of the country’s oldest” (recorded) women to ever give birth in the U.S. was 62-year-olde Kathy Blattner of Waterloo, Illinois.

And the new mother, Kathy Blattner, told FOX 2Now News that she wants her story told in order to inspire women struggling with infertility later in life.

62-year-old new mother Kathy Blattner, also happened to be pregnant at the same time as her oldest daughter, Sarah.

Both delivered baby girls and only weeks apart.

And that’s not the only unique part of this story.

Kathy can’t conceive, so a few years ago her oldest daughter, Sarah, donated her eggs. Dr. Sherman Silber combined the eggs with Kathy’s husband’s sperm to create several embryos.

Kathy’s husband John is Sarah’s stepfather, and the two share no DNA.

The intriguing newscasts can actually be viewed in the link below:

“LEAVE A MESSAGE AFTER THE BEEP.”

Susan Starace Balducci shares the following amusing Mother’s Day anecdote titled: “Leave a Message After the Beep.”

My mother, a master of guilt trips, showed me a photo of herself sitting alone, waiting by her phone that never rings.

I said: “Mom, I call you all the time! If you had an answering machine, you’d know that I’m telling the truth!”

Soon after, my brother installed an answering machine for her.

When I called the next time, I got her machine which said the following:

“If you are a salesperson, press one.

“If you’re a friend, press two.

“If you’re my daughter who never calls me, press 911 because the shock will probably give me a heart attack.”

WHAT IS THE RECORD FOR THE MOST CHILDREN BORN TO ONE MOTHER?

A. 45

B. 69

C. 200

I know, I know! I found this to be impossible for me to believe – but it just happens to be true!

But it’s just too much for the average human mind to even comprehend. And this may be the most difficult 10 points for your team to win thus far in this competition.

But, if you selected “B” for 69 children born to a single woman – well, you and your Dream Team are truly, truly amazing!

The record for the most children born to one mother is 69, held by

Carlsbad Police arrest man for indecent Exposure and stalking Detectives Seek

Additional Victims

On Friday, May 2, at approximately 8:34 a.m., the Carlsbad Police Department responded to a report in the 700 block of Laguna Drive regarding a male subject in a purple vehicle following a female pedestrian. During the initial investigation, officers learned that the same man had been involved in a separate incident earlier that morning near Laguna Drive and State Street, where he exposed himself to another woman.

Responding officers later located the man at his residence and took him into custody. He was positively

About Town

When I was younger - Vietnam by lyle

There was a time, when I was younger, when I was an adventurous sort.

We spent some time in the middle of a crazy Asian War in a place called Vietnam.

You may have heard of it.

We had a few military folks assigned there. Quite a few.

We lost a lot, too. Records indicate we lost 58,282 between 1955, when the war started, and 1975, when we left the country. A mighty war power, beaten by a rag tag army of guerillas and the North Vietnamese Army. Our cause was not helped by politicians in Washington who fascinated themselves as super-Jim-Dandy Generals. Those politicians got a lot of our people killed.

Records also show that the Vietnamese lost 2,000,000 civilian deaths. Some killed by NVA, some by the Viet Cong, some by their own South Vietnamese military and, sadly, some by US military forces - often these civilian deaths camb by way of massacres.

The Viet Cong were the guerilla element of the Vietnam War. They

identified as 23-year-old Max Rasul of Carlsbad. Rasul was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on multiple charges, including PC 314(1) – Indecent Exposure and PC 646.9(a) – Stalking.

This case remains under active investigation, and the Carlsbad Police Department urges anyone who may have additional information related to this case or who may have been a victim of similar behavior this morning to contact Detective Casey Burns at 760-607-9207 or casey.burns@carlsbadca.gov

were very, very effective. They used booby traps, covered with brush and leaves, ready to trap the unware soldier or Marine. Below is what happened.

Quite often they would smear these nails with human or animal excrement as they knew this would speed the spread of infection. They actually preferred to wound our troops rather than kill them because that would tie two to three people up, at a minimum. Two soldiers to transport the wounded man, then two or three medics/nurses and/or doctors at the field station, then air transport . . . a lot of people tied up, unable to participate in combat. Smart cookies, those Viet Cong.

They were hard to identify because they were the villagers, the farmers, the merchants. They would smile at you during the day and try to kill you at night. Once in a while we’d catch some and then interrogate them. We recorded such an interrogation. The military language schools are some of the best and a lot of good information was gleaned from field interviews.

All too often, the good information would get to a field commander who did not belong in the field but selling shoes or delivering milk. We had great field commanders . . . we also had terrible ones . . with eyes on promotions and medals rather than victory and/or the safety of his troops.

But when a good field commander got that info and processed it, we were capable of kicking some butt. And did. Reguarly. But we also lost a lot people.

In addition to the estimated 58,282 casualties that died, we also had 303,644 wounded in action, and 1,655 Missing in Action. We also had between 725 and 799 POW’s, with between 65 and 119 who died in captivity, or while trying to escape.

Dear Friedrich,

I have always enjoyed the articles you bring to “The Paper”. Your research is very thorough and your perspective is always on target.

I notice that you have done several articles involving the life and death of Jesus, which I have found very interesting and compelling.

I haven’t seen a mention of the resurrection of Christ. Since that is the rest of the story and the reason for our hope as Christians, I think you might enjoy the book, The Case for Christ, by Lee Strobel for further study. He was the legal editor for the Chicago Tribune and a devout atheist. When his wife became a believer in Christ, he set out to prove to her that Christianity was a hoax. He attacked the resurrection head on, and because of his research, became a Christian himself. I would encourage you to read it and would be interested in your take on it.

Thanks again for your excellent contributions,

Bill Root

It was a nasty, dirty war.

I was there in 1967 and 1968. We traveled with the Army, the Marines, Navy and Air Force.

We landed on board the Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier via a COD (Carrier On Board Delivery), a propellor driven aircraft that was later catapulted off the deck when we took off. I had been told it was a tremendous jolt. It wasn’t. Not really. I’ve had greater jolts on rides at Disneyland. Still the tour of the ship and sleeping on board was interesting. Met lots of great sailors, both officer and enlisted. I have to admit, however, the Navy serves up the best food of all the service branches.

Back on shore we’d spend a lot of time with Army and Marine units. We accompanied troops on “Insertions,” where a large number of choppers would drop troops into an LZ (Landing Zone), sometimes into a “hot LZ” (under fire).

One of the many troops we met was a Chaplain. A catholic priest from Chicago. Everyone called him the “Sky Pilot.” This priest

Letters to the Editor

It’s both refreshing and encouraging for constituents to read weekly columns from 5th District Supervisor Jim Desmond and also Vista Mayor John Franklin, both of whom care enough to address us voters and be transparent on their agendas, plans, and mutual concerns regarding the best interests of our respective communities. And I applaud The Paper for allowing this forum of political discussions on their part. The question that begs to be asked is: Where’s Escondido Mayor Dane White in all of this? If Desmond and Franklin care enough to find the time to address us, why not Mayor White? With Escondido’s population of over 151,000 I would think inland voters would like to hear Mayor White’s priorities and spending agenda. Not a good look. A lot of us out here in Readerland are reading and following with great interest what Desmond and Franklin are saying. White should join the party. One more item, cover story writer Friedrich Gomez is an undisputed master of his trade. His cover stories are eclectic and most worthy of any bigtime publication.

demonstrated repeatedly his courage, giving Last Rites to badly wounded troopers while he was under fire.

One story told of how a phosphorus grenade accidentally went off inside a Chinook helicopter and one of the soldiers panicked. The Chaplain took matters into his own hands and gave an exellent punch to the solar plexus of the trooper, quickly calming him down. The phosphophorus grenade was then disposed of and the chopper landed safely . . . thanks to the quick thinking and action of this otherwise mild mannered priest.

We came under attack several times.

While in An Khe, working late at night in the press tent, the sirens went off and we all scrambled to get to the bunker for safety. Halfway between the press tent and the bunker and its welcoming safety, I realized I had left my tape recorder behind. I dashed back into the tent,

5th District Supervisor • Jim Desmond a Home sale Tax?

One of my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors is pushing a new home sale tax on San Diegans. It’s exactly as bad as it sounds.

Under this proposal, the County would apply a real estate transfer fee—a new tax—every time you sell your home. I believe this is an outrageous and harmful idea, especially for seniors, working families, and longtime homeowners who have spent decades building equity in their homes.

For most people, their home is their nest egg. It’s their retirement plan. It’s how they’ve built generational wealth. To punish someone for selling their home—often to

downsize, retire, or help their family—is not just wrong, it’s dangerous public policy.

We’re already living in one of the most expensive regions in the country. Between high property taxes, fire insurance hikes, utility bills, and skyrocketing housing costs, Californians are being stretched to the brink. Now, some politicians want to dip their hand into the little financial security people have left? Enough is enough.

Let me be clear:

I oppose this new tax. I’ll fight it every step of the way.

We should be protecting our seniors and homeowners—not punishing them with new fees and bureaucratic cash grabs. Our focus should be on lowering costs and giving people the ability to stay in the communities they love— not driving them out of San Diego County.

There’s also talk of raising the sales tax, meaning every purchase you make in San Diego County, would cost a little more.

When families overspend, they

tighten the budget. Fewer dinners out. You adjust. You try to make it work. But not government.

Despite a projected $138.5 million budget shortfall — ballooning to $321.8 million in five years — there’s no talk of tightening belts. Why? Because government doesn’t feel the pain. We do.

There’s now talk of an additional tax from one of my colleagues, which would rase $1 billion. This isn’t a revenue problem. It’s a spending problem — fueled by bloated bureaucracy and programs that do little for everyday San Diegans. It’s time for government to get its house in order—not demand more from yours.

This kind of thinking is exactly why people are leaving California. And it’s why I’m standing up—to stop these extreme ideas and restore common sense.

Thank you for continuing to stand with me. Together, we can push back.

Vista Mayor • John Franklin Celebrating The National day of Prayer

On May 1, at the Memorial Flag Pole at Citrus and Broadway in downtown Vista, we celebrated The National Day of Prayer.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance in the United States, held on the first Thursday of May, inviting Americans to pray for the nation. Its origins reflect a deep tradition of public prayer that dates back to the founding of the country. In 1775, the Continental Congress called for a national day of prayer to seek divine guidance during the American Revolution, marking one of the earliest instances of formal public prayer in American history.

Notably, on the same day in 1789, September 25, that Congress approved the First Amendment—ensuring freedom of religion—they also passed a resolution requesting President George Washington to

declare a national day of thanksgiving and prayer. The authors of the Bill of Rights understood that public prayer could coexist with the constitutional protection of religious liberty.

Throughout the next 250 years, presidents and Congress repeatedly called for days of prayer

during national crises, such as the Civil War, World Wars, and times of natural disaster. Leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt invoked prayer as a unifying force and source of moral strength.

In 1952, during the Korean War, Congress passed a law—signed by President Harry S. Truman—establishing the National Day of Prayer as an annual event. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed an amendment designating the first Thursday of May as its permanent date.

The National Day of Prayer remains a symbol of America’s spiritual heritage. It reflects the long-standing role that prayer has played in American public life, and the belief, held since the nation’s founding, that prayer can guide and unify a diverse people.

I strongly believe that elected officials should provide regular “Performance Reports” to their constituents so they can be held accountable and receive feedback.

I have only been in office for 140 days, but my office and I have been working around the clock to create a culture in our District Office to ensure state government is serving YOU —not the other way around.

As you review some of our early accomplishments below, please feel free to provide any feedback or request any assistance on any issue! That’s what we are here for!

Enhancing service to Constituents

717 Cases Closed in First 5 Months: My team and I have already helped 717 constituents resolve issues with state agencies.

We created a dedicated website to take in any constituent’s request for service. You can access it at www. AskCarlforHelp.org

Every request for assistance that we receive is logged and given a unique case number in my office – with a goal of responding to requests within 48 hours.

We’re cutting through the bureaucracy, holding agencies accountable, and making sure your tax dollars are being spent effectively. We’re getting real results for this district, and we’re just getting started.

Too often, government agencies drag their feet, fail to respond, and seem completely disconnected from the needs of the people they’re supposed to serve. That’s not acceptable. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to provide the responsive, no-nonsense service you deserve, and to hold the government accountable for the way it treats you.

But then they changed it again to 9:22 p.m. My husband only discovered this change a week before my trip. I never got an email notifying me of the change.

This late arrival time completely threw off my plans, so I had to book a new flight on United Airlines that cost me an extra $900.

When I called American Airlines, an agent made it seem like getting a refund would be no problem, so I submitted a request through their online form. To my dismay, American Airlines rejected my refund request and only offered me a flight credit that expires in a year.

Given that I had to buy a whole

new ticket because of their unannounced schedule change, is there any way I can get a full refund from American Airlines?

A: You should have received clear and timely notification about your flight change. According to American Airlines’ conditions of carriage, the legal agreement between you and the airline, you’re entitled to a full refund if the carrier reschedules your flight by more than four hours.

The airline should have notified you of the schedule change well in advance of your departure. While they notified you of the first, minor change, the lack of communication about the second, more drastic change, is unacceptable.

When you contacted American Airlines to address the issue, the agent should have sent you a written confirmation of your refund eligibility. Instead, you received a

verbal assurance -- followed by a written denial.

While nonrefundable airline tickets generally don’t qualify for cash refunds, significant schedule changes, especially those involving international flights, often warrant exceptions. The Department of Transportation (DOT) mandates airlines to issue refunds for “significant” delays. Under its new consumer protections adopted last year, that’s defined as any change exceeding six hours from the original departure or arrival times. But this doesn’t apply to canceled flights, and a look at your itinerary suggests American canceled your flight and rebooked you on a different one. For a canceled flight, you always have the option of a full refund.

Bottom line: American can’t keep your money and offer you an expiring flight credit. A brief, polite

email to one of the American Airlines executives I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org, may have helped you get what you deserved. As I review your correspondence, it looks like you were stuck talking to an AI bot.

I contacted American Airlines on your behalf. The airline reviewed your case and issued a full refund of your original flight to your credit card, which is what you requested. Too bad it took my team’s intervention to achieve this outcome. If you’re ever in this situation again, remember to cite the airline’s contract of carriage and DOT rules to get what you deserve.

should you pay extra for an airline seat assignment?

Is it worth paying extra for a seat assignment on a flight?

For Donna Shelton, the answer is: almost never.

“OK, I just made an exception on a flight from Houston to Chicago,” says Shelton, a banker from Chicago. “I brought home a stray cat I had rescued while visiting my family. I wanted more legroom to access her carrier, if necessary.”

She reluctantly forked over $30 for an aisle seat.

Shelton says the seat assignment fees usually aren’t worth the extra money, and they feel like a money grab by the airlines.

She’s right. A recent Senate report found the five biggest U.S. airlines collected $12.4 billion from seat fees between 2018 and 2023. In some cases, airlines are earning more money from seat selection fees than from luggage fees. The urge to charge for seats is irresistible: In just a few months, even Southwest Airlines will start charging passengers for seat assignments.

How did that happen? I couldn’t

explain it. Then I heard from Madeleine Galvin, a retired office manager from Alexandria, Va. She said airlines often leave you with the impression that you won’t have a seat if you fail to pay for one. In fact, she just had this problem with a foreign carrier.

“Do these airlines think you will stand up for the entire flight?” she asked me.

For the record, if you have a ticket on a flight, you have a seat. (I think writing those words probably cost the airline industry a few million dollars, at least. You’re welcome, fellow passengers.)

When should you pay for a seat assignment?

if you absolutely have to have a particular seat. Rachel Wagner hates the middle seat and will do almost anything to avoid it. “I dislike the feeling of being trapped,” says Wagner, an etiquette expert and frequent air traveler. “I need to stretch on a longer flight or make a trip to the lavatory. So, as much as I don’t like to pay extra for an aisle seat, I think it’s worth it. I do it for my own sense of well-being.” Good point. If you feel a little claustrophobic, maybe you should pay a little extra -- or a lot extra -- to stay out of one of the cramped seats.

If it’s a long flight. For Valerie Howell, a retired physical therapist from Miami, an aisle seat at the front of the cabin is essential on a flight of three hours or more. “The aisle seat ensures my comfort, and the forward seat has paid off a few times to get me to my next flight faster due to a delay or tight connection,” she explains. “And there’s the peace of mind of knowing that I have it -- just in case.”

if you need to sit next to someone. That’s the strategy used by Pattie Haubner, a frequent traveler from Dorset, Vt. And the math works out better, too. It’s cheaper to book “basic” economy class tickets and then pay for a seat assignment than to buy a more expensive type of ticket that may include the ability to select a seat. “While I do feel these extra charges are annoying and a money grab, I always purchase or reserve aisle seats,” she admits.

When should you refuse to pay for a seat assignment?

When you’re traveling alone and just don’t care. “It’s absolutely not worth it,” says Joanna Teljeur, a spokeswoman for AirAdvisor. Airlines may suggest that you won’t have a seat at all if you forego a seat assignment, but that’s a fakeout. You have a seat on the flight and you’ll get a seat assignment when you check in.

When you’re flying with kids. In the past, families traveling with young kids have been a rich source of seat assignment revenue for airlines. Parents suffered from separation anxiety. (Curiously, their kids -- especially their teenagers -- did not.) Here’s a fact: Airlines don’t generally charge families traveling with young children to sit together. Most major U.S. airlines guarantee free family seating in anticipation of a government regulation banning the practice of charging parents of young children for seat reservations. “Don’t fall for the trap,”

says Eric Napoli, vice president of legal strategy at AirHelp. “Children should be seated with their parents at no additional charge.”

if you just don’t give a damn. If it’s a short flight, if you don’t mind sitting in the middle seat, or if you’re watching your budget, then skip the seat assignment and play reservation roulette. “For passengers who are not so particular with seating, paying for a seat may be an unnecessary expenditure,” says Christian Petzold, marketing director at BCN Travel.

What if people stopped paying for seat assignments?

Airlines are making a ridiculous amount of money by selling you the promise of avoiding a middle seat or exploiting your separation anxiety or your claustrophobia. We also know that sophisticated algorithms often set the price you pay for a seat. In other words, what you pay has virtually nothing to do with the actual cost of providing transportation, and the airlines are trying to squeeze the maximum they can from a seat.

How to Kill Airline Seat Fees

So what would it take to disrupt this racket? Easy. If everyone stopped paying the fees, airlines would have to start assigning seats to passengers at no additional cost -- window seats, middle seats, even the coveted aisle seat.

Would fares go up? Nope. We, the airline passengers, control what we pay for our tickets. We could refuse the higher fares, and then prices would fall.

In the meantime, you can avoid the worst of the seat reservation fees by flying on airlines that don’t charge them, or don’t charge them as often. Those include Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

But who am I kidding? Airlines would just shrink the size of their seats even more, leaving all of us scrambling desperately to feel a little less tortured on our next flights. We’ll pay. Yes, we’ll pay.

The only way airlines would ever drop these reservation fees is if the government forced them to.

The Computer factory

Throughout history we’ve used our minds to make life easier and safer. Through written and spoken language we learned to pass our accumulated knowledge on to future generations. In recent centuries we invented devices to provided shortcuts to information we needed to solve problems. The astrolabe, sextant, and abacus were replaced by inertial guidance systems, calculators and computers that provide quick access to information we needed to get answers. Up until the 21 st century the human mind stood alone as the pinnacle of intelligence on our planet.

The Last of the dis

tion. The DNs (Digital Natives 30 years and younger) spent half the waking hours of their “formative years” on the IW. As a result they have less direct (hands on) experience with the world and reduced face to face human contact. Their general acceptance of the IW as an internal rather than external resource has impacted both their socialization and cognition leading reduced social skills and somewhat lower IQ scores. They are getting better, faster, and more reliable solutions from the IW than they can get by using their internal cognitive resources. A better solution at lower energy costs is a “win/win” for the DNs.

In 1805 it took the Louis and Clark expedition eighteen months to hike from St Louis, Missouri to the Pacific Ocean. By 1860 the Butterfield Stagecoach could make it in six days. Today a flight from St Louis to the pacific coast takes less than four hours. For thousands of years we humans have found ways to overcome our physical limitations. Devices like the lever and wheel multiplied our physical strength. Eventually steam, internal combustion, electricity, solar and nuclear energy sources gave us capabilities dramatically exceeding our physical abilities. With the help of external machines and energy sources, we built civilizations.

The survival value of our physicality was largely supplanted through the ingenuity of our fertile minds.

Pet owners would LOVE IT if their pets could talk. What would we ask them about? I did some research and found the answers to some of the questions we might like to ask our pets.

Hey dog. Are you really color blind?

Dogs see some color, just not as much as we do. More like what we see at dusk.

Is one human year really seven dog years?

Then came the IW (Intelligent Web).

In 2001 the ever growing data base of the high speed World Wide Web coupled with the ever improving capabilities of AI (Artificial Intelligence) created the IW with many times the data storage capacity of the human mind and high speed AI to parse it. Largely unencumbered by human biases, the IW has become an ever more reliable source of solutions. Each year since it became available in 2001 we have become ever more dependent on the IW.

There is a subtle difference in the way older and younger generations regard IW solutions. Most of we members of the older generations (over 40 year old DIs or Digital Immigrants) had already developed mature, adult cognitive resources (intelligence) prior to the availability of the IW. We regard the IW as a reliable external source of informa-

Even if accompanied by some loss of cognitive ability?

As man’s physicality lost its rel-

evance as a survival asset, so too are our cognitive resources. We still regard robust physicality as positive asset and sexually attractive. We flock to the gyms, participate in sports and generally agree that maintaining physical fitness is a good thing even if it has limited survival benefits. Will DNs likewise seek to preserve their cognitive resources as AI continues to erode the survival imperatives for intelligence? Will the future generations of DNs find ways to continue expanding their minds? Will they develop mental “gyms” to keep their minds toned and fit? The “use it or lose it” syndrome is always in play. Will subsequent generations of DNs value and expand their intellectual resources or will they let themselves become dull, witless drones, kept alive by their machines? Only time will tell.

Wish my dog Could Talk

That depends on whether you’re talking about physically or mentally. A one-year-old dog is as physically mature as a 15-year-old human. Mentally? That depends on the dog and the human. Some 15-year-olds are pretty dumb.

Do dogs like to watch TV?

Some do. Some don’t. About 9 out of 10 owners say their dogs curl up beside them when they watch T.V. Maybe they’re not watching. They just want to be close. Either way… STOP using doorbells in TV commercials!

When I die, should I leave everything to my dog?

About one million dogs in the U.S. are the primary beneficiaries in their owner’s wills.

Remember, pets will need someone to handle the money. They don’t have pockets and they don’t

always make wise financial decisions.

I was two rooms away. How did you know I opened food?

A dog’s hearing is more than ten times better than a humans and its sense of smell is more than 100,000 times stronger than a humans. This is also why they can tell that you petted another dog ten hours ago.

You cheating cheater.

Do you like it when I leave you a voicemail message?

An American Animal Hospital Association poll found that 33% of dog owners talk to their dogs on the phone and leave messages for their dogs while they’re away. Dogs wag their tails when they hear mommy or daddy saying their names on the answering machine.

Do you really not know how long I’ve been gone?

Nope. Dogs have almost no sense of time. We’ve discussed it before. When you leave, promise your dog that you’ll come back, and let it know if it will be light or dark.

You’ll still get “the look.” You know what I mean. That sideways head tilt your dog gives you when it knows you’re leaving to eat hamburgers and pet other dogs.

and suffer on account of the Son of Man. There are warnings about being rich now, well-fed now, even laughing now, and seeking people’s approval to believe these are the rewards of life. No, Jesus says we need more love in a world of hate. We are to do good to our enemies, bless those who hate us, pray for those who abuse us, and then He adds, ‘Give, be merciful, and do good.’ Our world needs more and more of these virtues.

Is ‘more’ better? Often, we need more of this world’s goods than we could ever use responsibly.

If we adopt Paul Getter’s mantra and add more of what Jesus teaches us to gain in our lives, we would be surprised at how rich we could truly be.

Launching DOGE California Project: As a budget watchdog, I have successfully launched a version of DOGE to focus on the California state government to expose wasteful spending and generate ideas for improving efficiencies.

Exposed Medi-Cal Waste & Demanded Oversight: I uncovered serious waste and mismanagement in the Medi-Cal system and formally requested a state audit to demand transparency and reform. In response to the concerning cost increases within MediCal, I requested an audit to examine the causes of these increases, particularly the unexpected $6.2 billion in emergency loans from the General Fund to cover Medi-Cal’s funding shortfall.

emergency room in Quin Nohn S. Vietnam. While there, an Air Force Master Sergeant was brought in. An attempted suicide.

The emergency team set up tourniquets on both legs and both arms and proceeded with procedures I was unfamiliar with . . . but they were clearly doing everything they could to save the Sergeant.

To no avail. He died. I noted as he died, and as I looked out the door of the emergency room I saw the sun rising over the mountains. Life begins anew. A new day. Meanwhile, another life was ended . . . I suppose there is a moral buried in that memory somewhere.

We also saw ‘dustoffs,’ the name given to Medevac helicopters. Ask anyone who was in a combat zone in Vietnam and their comments about Dustoff pilots border on worship.

Whenever a Dustoff pilot walked into a bar, whether on base or in town, his money was no good. He could not buy a drink. Everyone would clamor to buy one of their bona fide heroes a drink. They earned it, the Dustoffs did. They flew into places where the book said you couldn’t fly. They made

the helicopter do things the book said the bird was not capable of doing. Yet they did it every day. Under fire.

Countless troopers were saved by the courage and rapid response of the Dustoffs. They continue that tradition today. If only the Armchair Generals (read politicians) would get out of their way and let them take the Red Cross off their choppers, a lot more troopers can be saved. To understand that comment, one needs to go to Michael Yon’s blog and read his coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and how the interference of ignorant military brass and political types are subjecting our Dustoffs to unnecessary danger and delay. (The Red Cross they insist be painted on the choppers make for an immediate target for the enemy).

We would see a number of wounded troopers after-action. In one such combat, near Da Nang, troopers were brought into a triage station for initial analysis and treatment before being whisked off to a more advanced aid station in the rear, and, if necessary, put on board a C-141 Hospital Aircraft for Med Evac back stateside.

We would accompany one of these aircraft home to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska, then on to Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

To our great surpise, we met a young man from Jackson, Minnisota, a town only about 30 miles from my place of birth, Windom, Minnesota.

It is, indeed, a small world.

All this happened 44 years ago . . . but I remember most of it as though it were yesterday.

I no longer have dark hair . . . it has turned grey. I no longer have the slender, tight body I once had. I have gained a pound or two. Perhaps more.

But I still remember the pain, the danger, the adrenaline rush one gets when in a combat zone . . . the spirit and feeling of camaraderie one has when in the company of brave, brave troopers, each of whom knows that he may well die today. Or perhaps tomorrow. But he knows the odds are against him.

After returning from my assignments as a war correspondent, I took up a more sedentary life - but not totally.

I was still nutty enough to take up sky-diving. But I only made five jumps.

I wasn’t that nutty.

Epilogue

Several years ago I decided to track down some of the folks I interviewed while on assignment.

One such individual was the priest, the “Sky Pilot.” He was out of the Chicago Archdiocese and I managed to track him down. He survived the war and returned home.

Unfortunately, he had become an alcoholic while in Vietnam (easy to do with loads of beer, wine and spirits available at very little cost). Upon return to the states he soon retired and moved to Colorado, where someone found him alone, in his cabin, dead..

A sad, sad end to a great man who had saved many lives and demonstrated his courage on many occasions.
