What powerful writing, what masterful dialogue and brilliant acting!

A tour-de-force for Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, and many other memorable actors.

Probably no more accurate depiction of the Old West could be found

than “Lonesome Dove,” nominated for 18 Emmy Awards and winning seven.

The reason the film-series became such an epic production is its depiction of the “Old West” the way it was. Based, in part, on true events, it recounted the trials and tribulations of two retired Texas Rangers, their lives and loves, their strengths, their weaknesses.

When we refer to The Old West we are generally talking about the period after the Civil War, the rest of the 1800’s, and the early part of the 20th century. It was then that thousands of pioneers pushed their way westward in search of land, better lives, gold and silver, and sometimes, to escape the law. Geographically, the “Old West” generally applies to those states west of the Mississippi River.

We had it all back then. Whiskey, drugs, sporting women, and outlaws, to scandal, sex, sin, and saloons, the Wicked West was filled with both glitz and grits. You’ll find plenty of each of these elements in “Lonesome Dove.”

Certainly, there were prostitutes . . . a fair number of them. But not all the women who headed west were “soiled doves.” (Many famous women were, however; for example, Calamity Jane resorted to working in brothels from time to time; the wife of Wyatt Earp also had a colorful and erotic past.

While it was not unusual, it certainly was not universal).

There were many frontier settlers who were hard working men and women, but there were plenty of others who lived life to the fullest – drinking, smoking, gambling, and often spending freely, and sometimes lavishly. The Wild West was often rough, sometimes dangerous, and always unpredictable.

A few years ago, my wife and I moved into a retirement development on Florida’s southeast coast.

We are living in the “Delray/ Boca/ Boynton Golf, Spa, Bath and Tennis Club on Lake Fake-a-Hachee”.

There are 3,000 lakes in Florida; only three are real.

Our biggest retirement concern was time management. What were we going to do all day? No longer.

Let me assure you, passing the time is not a problem.

Our days are eaten up by simple, daily activities. Just getting out of our car takes 15 minutes. Trying to find where we parked takes 20 minutes. It takes a half-hour in the check-out line in Wal-Mart, and 1 hour to return the item the next day.

Let me take you through a typi-

My wife goes directly to the pool for her underwater Pilates class, followed by gasping for breath and CPR. I put on my ‘Ask me about my Grandchildren’ T-shirt, my plaid mid-calf shorts, my white socks and sandals and go to the clubhouse lobby for a nice nap.

Before we know it, it’s time for lunch.

We go to Costco to partake of the many tasty samples dispensed by ladies in white hair nets. All free!

After a filling lunch, if we don’t have any doctor appointments, we might go to the flea market to see if any new white belts have come in or to buy a Rolex watch for $2.00.

Doctor-related activities eat up most of our retirement time. I enjoy reading old magazines in subzero temperatures in the waiting room, so I don’t mind.

Calling for test results also helps the days fly by. It takes at least a half-hour just getting through the doctor’s phone menu. Then there’s the hold time until we’re connected to the right party. Sometimes they forget we’re holding, and the whole office goes off to lunch.

Should we find we still have time on our hands, volunteering provides a rewarding opportunity to help the less fortunate.

We’re usually back home by 2:00 pm to get ready for dinner. People start lining up for the early bird about 3:00 pm, but we get there by 3:45 because we’re late eaters.

Florida has the largest concentration of seniors under five feet tall and they need our help. I myself am a volunteer for ‘The Vertically Challenged Over 80.’ I coach their basketball team, The Arthritic Avengers. The hoop is only 4-1/2 feet from the floor. You should see the look of confidence on their faces when they make a slam dunk.

The dinners are very popular because of the large portions they serve. We can take home enough food for the next day’s lunch and dinner, including extra bread, crackers, packets of mustard, relish, ketchup and Splenda, along with mints.

Food shopping is a problem for short seniors, or ‘bottom feeders’ as we call them, because they can’t reach the items on the upper shelves. There are many foods they’ve never tasted. After shopping, most seniors can’t remember where they parked their cars and

youth, she arrived in Rapid City going by the name of Amy Helen Dorothy Bolshow and began to work as a dance hall girl. However, by the time the gold rush was on in Deadwood, she had obviously “promoted” herself to a full-scale madam.

She married a man named Joseph DuFran, a personable gentleman gambler, who not only wasn’t bothered by her profession, but helped her to grow her business.

In her early days in Deadwood, she became a friend and occasional employer to Calamity Jane, who sometimes worked as a prostitute.

She was also said to have had a “heart of gold,” often providing nursing services to those that needed it and helping the poverty stricken.

One of Dora’s most popular houses called “Diddlin’ Dora’s,” was in Belle Fourche on Fifth Avenue.

Diddlin’ Dora’s advertised itself as “Three D’s – Dining, Drinking and Dancing – a place where you can bring your mother.” And though the cowboys frequented the popular place, most just wanted to “get down to business,” with at least one man remarking, “I wouldn’t want my mother to know I had ever been there.”

By the turn of the century, Dora was still going strong when a worn out Calamity Jane returned to the Black Hills for the last time in 1903. In the final stages of raging alcoholism and carrying her pathetically few belongings in a dilapidated old suitcase, Jane earned her keep by cooking and doing the laundry for Dora’s brothel girls before she died on August 2, 1903.

In 1909, Dora’s husband Joseph died at the age of 47 and was buried at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. After-

wards, Dora returned to Rapid City, where she set up another brothel that was wildly popular, especially during the Prohibition years, as it also served as a speakeasy. Dora DuFran died of heart failure at the age of 60 on August 5, 1934, she was buried at Mt. Moriah next to her husband and a beloved pet parrot who had preceded her in death.

Her obituary in the Black Hills Pioneer mourned the passing of “a noted social worker.”

Mollie Johnson Queen of the Blondes Known as “Queen of the Blondes” in Deadwood’s early days, Mollie Johnson ran a brothel at the corner of Sherman and Lee Streets.

Johnson had a knack for flaunting her profession by renting a $10 anhour carriage and riding up and down the main streets of the camp, snubbing not only the few “proper ladies” that might be out on the streets of Deadwood, but also the other “sporting ladies” who didn’t work for her, were not as prosperous, or, in her opinion, were not as beautiful.

Her first appearance in the local news was in February 1878 when she married Lew Spencer, a black minstrel and comedian, who was playing at the Bella Union Theater.

However, their “marriage” was anything but typical, as Mollie continued her profession, and as the camp watched, didn’t “act” much like any other married woman.

Working for Mollie were three golden haired protégés, whom she lead about town in her many activities – Ida Clark, Ida Cheplan, and Jennie Duchesneau.

Wild West from page 3 On one occasion, when the Times reported the arrest of three of Mollie’s competitors for selling liquor without a license, they accused Mollie of providing the information that got them arrested. The article read, in part: “[Mollie] caused the corralling of her lascivious sisters, and it was the opinion of the average rounder that Madam Mollie is fixing up a good pounding for herself---by the trio of female sinners referred to.”

As Mollie and her “ladies” went on about their business in Deadwood, the minstrel, Lew Spencer, traveled to Denver, Colorado. Imagine Mollie’s surprise when the newspapers reported in 1879 that her husband, Lew Spencer, had fatally shot his “wife” in Denver. Spencer was sent to prison for the offense, but would later be released and go on to record the earliest known version of A Hot Time in the Old Town, in 1896.

Though scorned by many in Deadwood and arrested several times for selling liquor without a license, Mollie’s business continued to

thrive up until that November day in 1879, when much of Deadwood would burn to the ground.

Wasting no time, Mollie started up once again, but within the next year would be plagued by two more fires – one in the chimney, and another, in an upstairs bedrooms. But these mishaps failed to shut her down, as the 1880 territorial census reports that Mollie Johnson was running a boarding house, where she and five other young ladies resided. They also reported that she was born in Alabama, was a widow, and was 27 years-old at the time.

The newspapers continued to report her antics and grand balls for the next two years, until a final headline tells that Mollie Johnson left Deadwood in January 1883.

What happened to Ms. Johnson beyond Deadwood is seemingly lost in history.

Inez Sexton Escaping the Trade Another woman who made herself notable for not joining the ranks of the soiled doves was Inez Sexton.

In the early 1880’s, Sexton made the dire mistake of falling for Al

Swearengen’s ruse to attract women to the Gem Theatre. The scoundrel Swearengen was notorious for advertising in the east for “stage performers,” offering high wages and paying to bring them west.

However, when they arrived, they would find that the real duties were something altogether different.

Virtually enslaving the often penniless women who arrived in the camp with no way home, Sexton, when she figured out that Al’s real intent was to turn her into a prostitute, gave him a piece of her mind, screaming, “Although my voice is for sale, nothing else is!” She then stomped out of the saloon. Without money to return home, the respectable ladies of Deadwood soon arranged a benefit to earn the fare.

In the Wild West, the “proper” ladies still labeled those who didn’t share their values -- by virtue of dress, behavior or sexual ethics, as “disgraceful,” but the shady ladies of the West were generally tolerated by other women as a “necessary evil.”

The biggest difference in the American West was the presence of girls in saloons. This was unheard of east of the Missouri River, except

in German beer halls where the daughters or wives of the owners, often served as barmaids and waitresses.

There were two types of “bad girls” in the West. The “worst” types, according to the “proper” women, were the many painted ladies who made their living by offering paid sex in the numerous brothels, parlor houses, and cribs of the western towns. The second type of “bad girl” was the saloon and dance hall women, who contrary to some popular thinking, were generally not prostitutes -- this tended to occur only in the very shabbiest class of saloons. Though the “respectable” ladies considered the saloon girls “fallen,” most of the girls wouldn’t be caught dead associating with an actual prostitute.

Saloon and Dance Hall Girls A saloon or dance hall girl’s job was to brighten the evenings of the many lonely men of the western towns. In the Old West, men usually outnumbered women by at least Wild West continued on page 7

tempered, vengeful, jealous, and she held a grudge longer than anyone I’ve ever known.

Frankly, I don’t understand how or why dad stayed with mom. She made his life miserable.

Dad was a handsome fella ... but never strayed. Regardless, mom was insanely jealous. If he said “good morning” to a lady at church mom was convinced there was an affair going on.

There wasn’t.

So another Mother’s Day is upon us.

One of the prettiest Mothers I know is Patricia (Patty) Strickler. This mother is just one of the reasons her daughter, Laura Strickler, is one of the five most beautiful women in the world. It’s in the genes.

Pat is, in turn, justifiably proud of Laura ... who is not only beautiful but brilliant . . . an expert in reverse mortgages, an outstanding speaker, and active member of the Escondido Woman’s Club.

We’re delighted to recognize and

give a great big 90th birthday hug to Patty as well as recognize her on this coming Mother’s Day. Patty was born in Scott, Ohio 90 years ago, got married at 19, had 4 kids: Laura and three boys, Mark, Jim & Scott. Divorced in 1964 and moved to Indiana. Married again after moving to Escondido to Gordon Strickler. She worked at an attorney’s office in Escondido as a para-legal for a few years. Then she worked

at Burroughs in Rancho Bernardo.

Gordon passed in 2018. Laura has lived with Patty since then.

She’s in pretty good health, loves to see her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. *** I know many of you will be celebrating Mother’s Day this year.

Wish I could join you but my Mom and I were not close at all. I was very close to my dad, Howard, but mom, Hazel ... was not an ideal mom. She was hard-headed, stubborn, short-

While mom and I were not at all close I worshipped her mom, Grandma Tollefson; everything a mom should be. Kind, loving, affectionate, considerate . . . she’s been dead for over 60 years and I still think of her every month. Mom? Not so much.

Trips from Omaha to Grandma’s farm in southern Minnesota are the warm memories of my life. I always loved seeing Grandma Tollefson.

The other mom: My Mary, when she was still Mary (before dementia) was a wonderful mom; not only our two sons, Scott and Kenny, but all the kids on our Little League and Soccer teams loved “Mother Mary.” Saturdays, Man About Town continued on page 6

San Diego Humane Society Reduces Adoption Fees May 1-17 for “Empty the Shelters” The San Diego Humane Society is reducing adoption fees for adult dogs and cats (7 months and older) to $50 from May 1 through 17, 2026.

It’s all part of Bissell Pet Foundation’s national “Empty the Shelters” initiative.

The organization is currently caring for 20% more animals than this time last year, with both dogs and cats staying longer in the shelter (up 30%) due to a slowdown in adoptions. Mullet, pictured here, has been waiting for her forever family for 505 days. Anyone interested in meeting her, can visit the San Diego Campus! Mullet’s adoption fee has been sponsored by a wonderful volunteer.

Right now, there are 1,585 animals in care, including 668 dogs and 777 cats. Dog capacity levels have reached staggering highs: 152% at the El Cajon Campus, 155% in Oceanside, 129% in Escondido and 150% at the San Diego Campus.

San Diego Humane Society is urging the community to consider adopting, if they are thinking of adding a pet to their family. To provide more opportunities for the community to visit, San Diego Humane Society recently extended its adoption hours. All campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego are now open for walk-in adoptions Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

by Laura Strickler Mother’s Day is just around the corner! I am blessed to have my mom still with me. This week, I was able to celebrate her 90th birthday. My three brothers and I received so much of who we are from our mom. Her life hasn’t been easy. Like most of us, she had many challenges during her life. She’s seen the end of WWII, the depression, the introduction of television and so many other world events and inventions.

She was divorced from my dad when divorce was still scandalous. As a kid, it was uncomfortable and embarrassing having divorced parents. I think of Mom back then, wondering how in the world she was going to care for four young children. She did it though!

For thirty years, Washington made choices. Both parties did. They flooded the country with cheap money and cheap labor. They let Wall Street treat single-family homes like a stock portfolio.

They let federal spending balloon while the dollars in your pocket got smaller. They wrote rules that helped insiders and hurt first-time buyers.

When I bought my first house, the down payment was three months’ pay. Three months. I wasn’t rich. I had just gotten out of the military and started flying professionally.

That same house today would take a young couple in our region somewhere north of a decade of savings to afford. And that’s if they never have a car break down, never have a kid get sick, never lose a paycheck.

The result is what you see in your kids’ eyes when you ask them about their future. They aren’t dreaming smaller because they want less.

They are dreaming smaller because the math doesn’t work.

Here is what I believe.

The kids went crazy for it. They loved her pizza and they loved her Scots brogue.

My mom loved Mary. To know Mary was to love Mary. But Mary, though she was kind to my mom, recognized that my mom was not an ideal character. We kept our distance . . . but enjoyed the company of my dad who absolutely worshipped my Mary.

Earlier today I took Mary for a spin up to Dixon Lake. Many a day she’d drive up that steep hill at 5am in order to open the concession stand at 6am (we owned “Lyle’s at Dixon Lake” for 27 years). Mary was a fixture there and everyone loved her . . the park rangers, the customers, and the ducks. Many happy memories came back to her as we drove through the park . . . which is what I was hoping for.

So, dear friends, while Mother’s Day is not a big holiday for me ... I tend to worship Grandma Tollefson and my Mary rather than my mom.

They deserve the love and admiration I offer. My mom did not.

I envy Laura Strickler and the warm relationship she has with her beautiful mom, Patty. That’s how things should be.

Many were widows or needy women of good morals, forced to earn a living in an era that offered few means for women to do so.

Earning as much as $10 per week, most saloon girls also made a commission from the drinks that they sold. Whiskey sold to the customer was generally marked up 30-60% over its wholesale price. Com-

Why Travelers are Ditching their Bags at the Airport

by Christopher Elliott If you want to understand why luggage is being abandoned at the airport, then join me on a recent flight from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru.

Just before I boarded the short domestic flight in Malaysia, a gate agent with a broad smile pulled me aside. My carry-on bag was too big, he cheerfully announced.

The penalty? A $35 “extra baggage” fee.

As I reluctantly forked over my credit card, I glanced at my 24year-old son, who was traveling with me. He’d already unzipped his slightly overpacked carry-on and was dumping items into a nearby garbage can to reduce the weight and size. Granola bars, apples, a half-eaten bag of cereal — gone before the agent could say a word.

The math was easy: pay $35 or trash $10 worth of food. He chose the trash can.

“The abandoned luggage issue isn’t just about saving a few bucks on a checked bag,” says Zackaria Saadioui, founder of Prked, a peer-topeer airport parking marketplace.

“It’s a sign of fee fatigue. Travelers are being nickel-and-dimed at every turn.”

Ernie Garcia, a frequent traveler who works for a marketing agency in New York, routinely abandons his belongings at the airport.

“Sometimes, I’ve abandoned so many clothes that I no longer need a checked bag,” he says.

If a bag starts to get worn out, it also gets left behind.

“The last roller suitcase I abandoned had a wonky handle that was difficult to extend and retract,” he recalls. “I left it in the hotel in Croatia.”

Abandoned Luggage is Spreading So far, the evidence of the aban-

doned luggage trend is mostly anecdotal. It’s an airport here, a hotel there — and plenty of travelers like Garcia or my son who are filling the garbage cans at the airport.

There are no comprehensive surveys that show travelers are dropping their luggage en masse before departure. But experts say it could happen soon. Increasingly strict airline policies are pressuring passengers to make a difficult decision.

“Airlines have steadily pushed up checked and even carry-on fees,” says Lucinda Faucheux, cofounder of Travel Support Circle, a travel agency. “So you can imagine a traveler weighing up the cost of paying another fee versus just walking away from an old case.”

Some airports now warn travelers about disposal timelines for unclaimed items. They typically hold bags for 30 to 90 days before auctioning, donating, or destroying them. Hotels store items for a few weeks, but dispose of the items promptly if they can’t find the owner.

All of this because the airlines want to make more money.

The Pastor Says . . .

The End Times For most of our readers, the subject of the end times isn’t new. New articles appear almost daily on our iPhones, all emphasizing the end of the world as we know it. This is not without a biblical theme of the rapture and God’s judgment on the world because of humanity’s sinfulness. There is a consistency in many messages that world events point to such a time. These events include the restoration of the state of Israel or the return of the Jews to the promised land known today as Israel, the war in the Middle East with biblical inclusion of nations listed in the Bible, the natural excesses with earthquakes, Pastor Huls tornadoes, devastating storms, and threats of possible heavenly collisions with terrestrial forces. We add to all this with the human behavior of extremists with mass murders, sexual perversion, dishonesty, and a lack of discipline on behalf of others. The world lives in fear of famine and aberrant behavior by political and social leadership. People say that all of this is a sure sign that history has run its course and that, in God’s plan, we are entering the last days of human existence.

It isn’t just all the events and human behavior that are initiating all of this, but God himself, who religionists claim has a part to play in an eternal plan. So it is more than just human behavior involved; it is also the plan and scheme of God, which goes far beyond humans. There is more mystery to all of this than human sense can comprehend. After all, the Bible does say that God’s role is there before the foundation of the world. That is, according to our understanding, a long time ago. With our human involvement, we ping on time and human behavior.

There is, however, a matter: we interpret human history based on what we have learned and believe. The belief about the end times and other beliefs, including the rapture and/or the return of the Christ, is based on the Bible. Often, the debate over what will really happen is based on one’s belief in what the Bible says. I recently had a long conversation with a friend about my beliefs regarding the Bible. I must admit that, based on thousands of years of biblical teachings, when people have said the end is coming and it hasn’t. I can’t help but wonder if all the hype about it being the time for all the claims of the end times, if there should be a bit of caution of making a claim that this is the moment when all that is believed about this being the time doesn’t call for a bit of caution and trusting that whenever and however all time will cease is still an open book. It doesn’t mean that one doesn’t believe in the Bible or what it says. It simply means that we keep working, enjoying, serving, and praying that we are responsible stewards of the time we have as a gift from God. I believe He will act in His own time, and our place is to give Him the space He needs. With this, we can be at peace and do His work on Earth just as it is done in Heaven.

“Times, They Are a-Changin” Part I of II

Bob Dylan wrote that song in late 1963. I was a year older than Dylan and fresh off active duty in the Marine Corps. By 1970 I had my college degree, wonderful wife, four sweet children and three bedroom home in the Fort Lauderdale suburbs. Dylan was right, the 60’s were a time of dramatic change, especially for us of the younger generations. Now fast forward six decades. Bob Dylan is 84 years old and still kickin and the times are still “a-changin”. But now times are not just “a-changin” for the younger generations. Times are “a-changin” for all of us.

On May 11th 1997 an IBM mainframe computer (Deep Blue) beat Chess Champion Gary Kasparov in a six game match. It was the first time a computer had vanquished a World Champion chess star. For

thousands of years humans had developed and utilized mechanical devices to overcome their physical limitations. “Deep Blue” famously demonstrated that a man-made machine could also outperform man in mental exercises. In 2001 the Internet and AI (artificial intelligence) were combined and the IW (intelligent web) was born. The IW accessed a knowledge base far greater than that held by any human and could quickly process it with AI for answers and solutions. As more and more applications became available, devices like cell phones, tablets, TVs, and micro-computers added “internet terminal” to their functional inventory. In a single half century the Internet’s data storage, AI and accessibility changed the way we humans learn and communicate.

In 2000 the average time spent on the Internet by a person between 15 and 40 years old was less than 2 hours per day. Today the average American in this age group spends 6-8 hrs connected each day. The IW has become an increasingly integral component in our day to day lives.

The Internet (IW) makes virtually all common human knowledge instantly available. Everything is on the IW. Nome and I have voice activated connections at home and here in the shop and we use them constantly. I can’t remember when I last used an encyclopedia, dictionary or other reference book. The answers are all instantly available on the Internet.

The IW has been around for 25 years and nearly 75% of the World’s

population has some access to it.

Communist countries like China, USSR, North Korea and Cuba comprise about a quarter of the Earth’s population. Their governments control Internet content and access. For those of us in the “free world” the Internet is an unabridged and complete source of human knowledge.

Young adults 18-30 years old are the first American generation to be raised from childhood in the ubiquitous presence of the IW. We love our kids and grandkids just as parents and grandparents of previous generations. Extensive exposure to the IW and its AI has made modern young folks a little different. On the positive side they have incorporated the IW with its AI as a component of their own internal cognition. They use the resources of the Internet interchangeably with their own internal resources. They are smart and knowledgeable. On the down side, exposure to the IW for nearly half

of their waking hours has restricted their “face time” with others. As a result they appear somewhat awkward in interpersonal relationships.

The steady rise in standard IQ test scores through the 20th century was called “The Flynn effect”. Recent tests have shown the first ever reversal in IQ test scores. It’s called the “reverse Flynn effect”. AI has largely replaced internal cognition in providing solutions and answers.

The 18-30 age group has suffered a three to five point reduction in IQ scores since the arrival of network AI in this century. The use of Internet based AI instead of internal resources is the likely cause of the “use it or lose it” reverse Flynn effect.

Will modern technology replace human intelligence and allow us to sag into a comfortable reliance on AI or will it free us to move on to ever greater intellectual achievements? The jury is still out.

games of chance, their chief attraction was dancing. The customer generally paid 75¢ to $1.00 for a ticket to dance, with the proceeds being split between the dance hall girl and the saloon owner. After the dance, the girl would steer the gentleman to the bar, where she would make an additional commission from the sale of a drink.

Dancing usually began about 8:00 p.m., ranging from waltzes to schottisches with each “turn” lasting about 15 minutes. A popular girl would average 50 dances a night, sometimes making more a night than a working man could make in a month. Dance hall girls made enough money that it was very rare for them to double as a prostitute, in fact many former “soiled doves” found they could make more money as a dance hall girl.

To the saloon owner, the dance girls were a profitable commodity and gentlemen were discouraged from paying too much attention to any one girl, as dance hall owners lost more women to marriage than in any other way.

More than a hundred cases were documented, but there were, no doubt, probably many more. One saloon girl, who was savagely beaten, had repelled the advances of a drunken customer. When a cowboy approached her, she responded “I don’t mind the black eye, but he called me a whore.”

She was born in 1855 in Belton, Texas, to James and Mary Raybourne Haley. Growing up was difficult for Mary Elizabeth, as the family lost nearly everything during the Civil War. Towards the end of the conflict, things got worse for Libby when the family farm was raided by Comanche Indians in 1864 and she was kidnapped. She remained with the Comanches for three years until 1867, when her parents paid a ransom for her release.

Through no fault of her own, Mary Elizabeth was seen as a “marked woman” after her release. Though she was only 13 years-old, most people assumed that she had been “used” by the Indians during her captivity and she was shunned and ostracized from society.

The 14 year-old ran away from home and traveled to Abilene, Kansas. With few options to support herself, she became a dance hall girl and prostitute. It was in this role that she earned the nickname “Squirrel Tooth Alice,” for two reasons – one the prominent gap in her teeth, and the second, an odd penchant for making pets of prairie dogs, which she kept on a collar and leash. While in Abilene, she met gambler and gunman, William “Texas Billy” Thompson, brother to more famous Ben Thompson.

Before long, the pair became a couple and Libby followed Billy as he worked as a cowboy along the Chisholm Trail and she continued to make money as a dance hall girl in a number of places along the trail.

However, by 1872, they were back in Kansas, this time in Ellsworth, where Billy made his living gambling and Libby continuing to work the saloons. The following year, Libby gave birth to her first child and the two got married.

In August of 1873, Billy Thompson, in a state of drunkenness, shot and killed Ellsworth town Sheriff Chauncey Whitney. Billy was arrested but soon bailed out and the couple fled back to Texas. Amazingly, the shooting was ruled an accident and Billy was free. Later, they wound up in Dodge City, where Libby worked once again as a dancer and prostitute.

After leaving Dodge City, the Thompsons drifted to Colorado briefly but soon made their way

back to Texas. In Sweetwater, they finally settled down, purchasing a ranch outside of town and Libby set up a dance hall and brothel in town.

Over the years, Libby had nine children, three of which were said to have been fathered by someone other than Billy. In the meantime, her Sweetwater brothel became prosperous.

In 1897, Billy died but Libby continued to run her Sweetwater brothel until she finally retired in 1921 at the age of 66. Most of her sons had turned to a life of crime and her daughters followed her into prostitution.

Sometime later, she moved to Palmdale, California.

She lived a long life before finally dying at the age of 98 on April 13, 1953 at the Sunbeam Rest Home in Los Angeles, California.

And so, we end our visit with just a small number of “working girls” from the Wild, Wild West. There are, literally, hundreds of similar colorful stories awaiting to be discovered and read.

Our “rascals” have colorful names, colorful histories, some of whom were, no doubt, very bad people . . . others of whom were in “the profession” out of economic necessity and were, in fact, rather good people.

Ever since I can remember I’ve had the burning desire to discover new places, new adventures. Because of this, I set out to discover a new country . . . and I was successful. I even ventured inland a great many miles where I discovered a place I called Minnesota. “This,” I thought, “would be a great place for Scandinavians.” So I headed back to Norway to recruit settlers. While I was gone, some clown named Columbus claimed he discovered America. Life ain’t fair. Except life also gave us The Paper. Singing in a chorus has many physical and cognitive benefits: • You pay attention to your posture to improve your breathing.

• You strengthen muscles used in breathing, allowing you to breathe more deeply so you can support and sustain notes.

• You actively listen so that you match others in your voice part and are in harmony with other parts.

• Singing releases endorphins which make you feel good too.

• In an acappella chorus, which has no accompaniment, you memorize the notes. (In a barbershop a cappella chorus, you also memorize lyrics).

The Music Men Chorus (Palomar Pacific Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society) is a men’s acappella choir that performs 4-part, close-harmony songs arranged in the “Barbershop” Style, known for its ringing chords. We sing a variety of song genres (romantic ballads, movie and show tunes, Great American Songbook selections, patriotic songs, inspirational numbers, and Christmas holiday favorites), performing at both public and private venues in North County.

Our members believe that singing in our chorus keeps them healthier, both physically and mentally. We have 3 members in their 90’s who regularly attend rehearsal.

If you are a male, high school age or older, who loves to sing and are interested in joining a chorus, we invite you to attend one of our Tuesday evening rehearsals, learn more about us, and see how singing can enhance your life. “Hotels and airports are inheriting someone else’s profit-maximizing strategy,” says Jacob Elban, a marketing specialist who has watched this problem spiral. “It’s physical evidence of a broken pricing model.”

Should you abandon your bag?

Seasoned travelers have developed strategies to avoid fees — and sometimes abandonment.

Think about your luggage before you leave. Pack only what’s necessary so that you don’t have to think about leaving something behind.

“Choose your items wisely and select meaningful possessions,” says André Disselkamp, co-founder of the travel insurance site Insurancy.

And remember, less is more.

Keep ‘em separated. Know what’s valuable and what’s disposable.

That’s Marcia Sherrill’s advice.

She’s abandoned her bags twice.

“Sometimes, it simply isn’t worth paying hundreds of dollars to send a no-name bag back to the U.S.,” says Sherrill, who publishes a shopping website in New York.

“Of course we hang on for dear life to our Hartmann and Tumi bags.”

Have a contingency plan. Avoid a situation where you’re the last person to board and you have to simply walk away from your bag.

Give yourself time to check in, and, if necessary, ask an airport employee where you can get rid of a bag quickly. And remember, you can always mail the items to your home address from the airport, if necessary.

Airlines are doing everything they can to put you on the spot at the gate. Pay us a luggage fee or you’ll lose your valuables. Traveling light and keeping your critical items with you ensures you can call their bluff.

Airlines created this problem by recklessly monetizing every inch of baggage space. Hotels and airports now have to manage the fallout. And so do you.
