and diverse people who attend this annual event and who add to the ambience and fun.

CBS TV 8 NEWS AGREES: PEOPLE ARE AS MUCH ABOUT CRUISIN’ GRAND AS THE CARS! CBS TV 8 News agrees with this assessment regarding people in attendance adding greatly to the SoCal atmosphere with teen-aged boys and young men often donning greaser jackets and ducktail haircuts, as well as teen girls wearing

bright red lipstick, rocking poodle skirts, and walking with highflying ponytails to match the era of the cars.

MY FIRST CRUISIN’ GRAND EXPERIENCE WAS THE FUNNIEST IN MY LIFE, SERIOUSLY (NO PUN INTENDED)!

My very first “Encounter of the Third kind” with Cruisin’ Grand nine years ago was also the funniest cultural shock of my life!

I never equated comedy or having my funny bone tickled associated with Cruisin’ Grand – and yet for me, this was the case.

AT CRUISIN’ GRAND BEING

CALLED OLD IS NOT “NECESSARILY” OFFENSIVE! Political correction doesn’t (necessarily) thrive at Cruisin’ Grand when you’re surrounded by vintage and classic old cars everywhere.

A lot of the “Old Guys Rule” tshirts can be spotted on both vintage car owners and observers, alike.

By sheer happenstance, I encountered Bob Belford and Steve Crenshaw, two survivors of the ‘60s hippie culture and they were proudly wearing their Old Guys Rule t-shirts and managed to make me laugh, incessantly. At the time, both were in their late 70s but they have refused to relinquish their humour down through the years.

As they so eloquently phrased it: “We’re still full of piss and vinegar!”

Cruisin’ Grand brings out the best in Bob and Steve. It is a visual reminder of how things once were in

The man replies, “That would be my wife.” *** I’m working on my latest book . . . “How to Speed Read by Strobelight.”

Look for it. Look again. And

America. “Back when the chrome was thick and the women were straight,” Belford bellows out, then narrows his eyes as if waiting for any challenge. His game-face is a non-threatening one; an overlyexaggerated expression which often elicits chuckles to those within earshot range.

By themselves, they are not that funny, but, together – well, that’s an entirely different story – they come together like nitro and glycerin. And their comical facial expressions truly gave their often “garden variety” humour -- added punch.

As the old adage goes: You had to be there.

“We play off each other,” Crenshaw confesses. “Bob here will say something and then I’ll try to top him. It’s a pissing contest of sorts and life is too damned short to take things too seriously!”

Expecting them to say they had to walk the proverbial hundred miles,

barefoot in the snow, to get to elementary school they, instead, ambush me by coming at me from a totally different direction. They said things like: “Why, when I was growing up my favourite toy was dirt!”

Standing next to a sign identifying a vehicle as a 1958 Ford Edsel I was greatly touched by the sentiments of another bystander who shared this great pearl of wisdom with me: “You know when you’re getting old when you can cough, fart, sneeze and pee all at the same time!”

I’m not offended by such bareknuckle pronouncements; it’s what makes us Americans; we are often in-your-face with truth and day-today life without the gloves on. At least it used to be that way.

Cruisin’ Grand from page 2 deep hole where everyone resides, like moles, afraid of the bright sunlight of truth and too afraid to voice any opinions as they once did when our country seemed a lot more free.

And the U.S. Constitution seemed more a living, breathing document that stood behind our First Amendment Right guaranteeing Freedom of Speech.

“No more,” they tell me with deep sadness in their tone of voice.

Just ask popular comedian Daniel Lawrence Whitney (Larry the Cable Guy). The normally funny Nebraskan says: “It’s gotten way outta control. You know. I really think that we’re at a point in this country where people really need to take the thumb outta their mouths and grow up a little bit and realise there’s a lot bigger problems out there than what a comedian did a joke about.”

Cruisin’ Grand seems an antidote to all that fussing and political over-correction. For example, sensitivity over one’s old age or being labeled an “old guy” is not a politically-incorrect taboo at Cruisin’ Grand.

Quite the contrary, at least it was nine years ago, in 2017, at my firstever Cruisin’ Grand encounter.

The “Old Farts Racing” event took place just the previous year (8 August 2016) on the Cruisin’ Grand calendar and which drew approximately 8,000 spectators!

During my first year in attendance, the 2017 Event Calendar included the “Over the Hills Gang” night (9 June 2017).

And to reiterate, “Old Guys Rule” t-shirts are everywhere!

EACH NIGHT CAN BE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE AT CRUISIN’ GRAND! I, personally, enjoyed the “British & German Car Night,” which took place later that same summer on 8 August 2017 and the ever-popular “Fire Truck Night” which was held on 8 September 2017.

And I went completely bonkers at the 2017 Fire Truck Night riding down the streets with dozens of other frenzied passengers of all ages screaming and laughing ourselves silly with the old fire truck horns and bells ringing out loudly!

It was not only interactive and educational to learn about these frontline heroes back then, but, adults and kids enjoyed the educational and periodic rides along the Grand Avenue route, complete with sirens and horns blaring away!

Memories that will last a lifetime!

One crucial bit of information is that Cruisin’ Grand has different Theme Nights. The sad reality is that some go one night and think “Well, that was fun” – and never return.

There’s a smorgasbord of events to sample at Cruisin’ Grand. On my first visit during the 2017 season I couldn’t wait to return because the different Cruisin’ Grand theme nights are all just waiting for you to experience! Each different from the other!

Past themes have been Model A and Model T Night, Antique Tractor & Gas & Steam Engine Night, Patriot Night with Escondido fireworks (God, I’m glad I did not miss this one!), Classic T-Birds & Woodies Night, Hot Rod Night, and so on.

I was really dazzled when I saw the “midget” race cars and go-carts zipping around Grand Avenue! I’ll never forget how entertained I was and how I laughed at the sight of these tiny vehicles darting here and there grabbing everyone’s attention.

Both impromptu street jesters, Bob Belfort and Steve Crenshaw, were not on the 2017 Cruisin’ Grand Event Calendar that night when I encountered them. They were like minstrels or court jesters holding court nonetheless, commenting on life, the ‘50s and ‘60s – as a small group lingered and laughed along.

No one was exempt from their comedic barbs. Any passerby was potential fodder for their comedic cannons.

One slightly inebriated bloke walking past after a few beers was singing happily to himself.

A few of us were already laughing at just the sight of it because we knew what was coming by just looking at Belford and Crenshaw’s cringed-up faces!

Belford fired the first comedic volley as the singing man slowly walked by, “Listening to him sing is like getting hit by a stick!”

I was already convulsed in laughter when Crenshaw blurted, “Listening to that singing – well, it sounds like two cats being dragged up the alleyway!”

Steve Waldron’s dream-come-true has been the biggest blessing for Escondido residents, and people in general, who make the trek here each year, including many celebrities, which shall be mentioned later so that you may keep your eyes peeled for this year’s 2026 Cruisin’ Grand all summer long!

A grateful city has expressed their appreciation for Steve Waldron by making him a recipient of its “Spirit of Escondido Award” to cite just one honour.

But even Steve Waldron is still amazed at the growth and popularity of Cruisin’ Grand. I once asked him about it and he told me: “I never honestly thought it would grow this big.”

If Steve Waldron has a fault, it’s his humility. He deflects compliments as deftly as a volley ball player deflects a spiker: “The people are the

real success of Cruisin’ Grand,” he told me with great sincerity in his voice. “And the people who own these amazing cars are the true stars of this event.”

Steve Waldron’s success story is one city’s loss and Escondido’s gain. Born in Los Angeles in 1961, he moved to Escondido in 1972 and that’s the best city-to-city move since the Dodgers left Brooklyn.

It is no small task what Waldron has accomplished. Much of what people reap in the form of remembrance, re-living precious dreams, or bringing families and friends together with a common celebration of our past heritage, is immeasurable. It is also expensive to keep Cruisin’ Grand in existence.

Steve Waldron, to his great credit, achieves his enormous fundraising goal in order to just cover costs.

The City of Escondido pays the necessary costs for extra police presence and roadblocks. I believe this is still so.

BACK TO 2017 & OUR CRUISIN’ COURT JESTERS, BOB BELFORD & STEVE CRENSHAW NOW HAVE A SMALL CROWD ABOUT THEM.

Looking back on the summer of 2017, I noticed that whenever Steve Waldron’s name was brought up in the company of my animated friends, Bob Belford and Steve Crenshaw, they suddenly fell into serious silence.

Always playful and full of jokes, they both become respectfully earnest, “Steve Waldron is a bona fide hero to us,” Crenshaw says. “How can you not embrace someone who creates an event where families can gather together, or friends have a re-union, or different neighbours can recognise each other on common ground, like at Cruisin’ Grand?”

Steve Waldron is deeply wrong in one pivotal truth. He says the cars and the people are the real stars of Cruisin’ Grand. It would be the ultimate sin of omission not to include Steve Waldron’s name to that list of indispensables. A comparison can easily be drawn here.

Someone once said that the Disney artists and cartoonists were the real talent behind the Disney cartoon empire.

What many forget is that these same artists would never have achieved fame by drawing immor-

I must have done something right!

Guess I’m more well known than I thought.

Last Saturday morning I arrived early at Pegah’s Restaurant for my 9:30am coffee with retired pastor Dick Huls. The place was packed so I sat down in the waiting area and had requested a booth, when available (due to my hearing loss; booths tend to be more quiet).

It was probably only about five minutes when an attractive older lady stopped by and said . . . “the legendary lyle davis! You now have a booth!” Turns out she had finished breakfast and had overheard my request. So I smiled, thanked

“The legendary lyle davis!” How about that!? One restaurant, Charlie’s, named a breakfast after me (“The Lyle Special”) and another, the customers recognize me!

Kinda nice. *** Himself . . .

Herewith, the official Sweet Life and Swell Times of Lyle, who was born in Windom, Minnesota on the banks of the Des Moines River (anything to save room rent), to which his great-grandfather, Hans Tollefson, came from Norway to farm and settle.

At one time he had a newspaper route (little did he realize that one day he would own his very own newspaper with a readership exceeding five people). Later graduating from Omaha’s Benson, High, he would soon demand to be allowed to join the US Army but only if he was favored with a chance to take his basic training at the then-beautiful Fort Ord, California. Thoroughly cowed, the Army acceded to his demands and he grabbed the first available plane to fly out of snow covered Nebraska to sunny California. After Basic Training, he was shuttled off to Brooke Army Hospital in Fort Sam Houston, Texas (near San Antonio) where he wangled a cushy job as Entertainment Director, writing newspaper columns and putting on stage shows for the troops. Following his military career of a whole two years he returned to Omaha then sped over to the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he majored in Psychology and soon learned he was certifiably nuts . . . at which time he did the only sane thing and switched his major to broadcasting.

As one New York critic put it, “Walt Disney was like a painter, dipping his brush into different hues and colours of talent. Yes, these cartoonists were brilliant, individually, but, when they were orchestrated and brought together – by Walt Disney on immortal projects, well, they made a mosaic of unimaginable magic that enchanted a world!”

Reality insists that the same parallel must be conceded to Steve Waldron. Like Disney, Waldron brings these car people together for a common purpose. Waldron’s vision, plan, and leadership brought to life a stagnant pallet of colours that remained – individually, insignificant – until they were united into a vision.

And that vision is Cruisin’ Grand.

And Cruisin’ Grand can be deliciously unpredictable and full of fun surprises.

He soon entered the hazardous field of radio broadcasting, there to languish for 25 years . . . moving from deejay to salesman, to Sales Manager, to Vice President and General Manager, to owner, then back to VP and General Manager, then back to on-air gigs as a Traffic Reporter for KFMB in San Diego. Somewhere within these years he earned a private pilot’s license, ASEL (Airplane, Single Engine, Land) . . . spent 1967 and 1968 as a war correspondent in someplace called South Vietnam, managed to fool a few people into giving him some prestigious awards ... and, as one of his crowning achievements, actually talked those people into paying him to do all these adventures.

He also managed to sweet talk some innocent little Scots lassie into marrying him and presenting him with two sons.

He’s jumped out of airplanes (five times), took up scuba diving, karate, and has earned a black belt in the art of napping at a moment’s notice.

Following his broadcasting career, he bought and sold real estate as an investor in default, foreclosed and bank owned properties; he owned Lyle’s at Dixon Lake for 27 years (Dixon Lake is in Escondido,

Select Vote Centers Open for June Gubernatorial Primary

To return a ballot by mail or at an official ballot drop box, voters should:

41 vote centers across San Diego County are open for early voting.

People living in the county can vote in person at any location from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

• Seal the ballot in the postagepaid return envelope.

• Date and sign the envelope— your signature is required for your ballot to count.

Additional vote centers will open Saturday, May 30th, bringing the total number of locations to 220 countywide. These centers will also be open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Return the ballot by mail or drop it off at any official San Diego County ballot drop box.

On the final day of voting, June 2nd, all vote centers, official ballot drop boxes and the Registrar of Voters office will extend hours from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Residents can use the Registrar’s online map to find nearby vote centers and see estimated wait times.

Cruisin’ Grand from page 4 MANY CELEBRITIES VISIT CRUISIN’ GRAND, MULTIPLE TIMES IN ONE SEASON! And if you keep your eyes peeled, you just might see a famous celebrity or two! Cruisin’ Grand is speeding along the highway of fame, gaining mileage of exposure through magazines, television, and even televised documentaries. It’s supposed to be the biggest event of its kind west of the Mississippi.

The cars are not only parked in display fashion on streets and sidestreets, they also cruise constantly up-and-down Grand Avenue, nonstop, throughout the evening, as depicted in the globally sensational and iconic movie “American Graffiti”.

World-famous musician/singer, Eric Clapton is no stranger to Cruisin’ Grand and seems to find time out from his busy worldwide schedule to pop in for an occasional friendly visit. It’s almost an unknown fact with the average person that Eric Clapton once owned a mansion here in Escondido in the 1980s and early ‘90s. He never forgot Escondido. It forever remained a special place within his heart. On

So, if you see people with overlysuspicious-looking floppy hats, and dark glasses, and worn-out jeans or, perhaps, delicate scarves around their heads, it could be Madonna, it could be Johnny Depp, who knows, as they are no strangers to Cruisin’ Grand. Celebs are rarely recognised in casual, often slovenly clothes,

Such as vintage car collector Jay Leno and super vintage car collector, Lady Gaga, with her enormous warehouse full of collectible cars.

It is a “no brainer” that such car enthusiasts as Leno, Lady Gaga, and Arnold Schwarzenegger are spotted annually.

5th District Supervisor • Jim Desmond They Called It Reform. It Was a Power Grab.

The top of the measure sounds great. Ethics commission. Independent budget analyst.

For a full month, we heard from constituents. From community leaders. From the editorial pages.

Independent auditor. Fiscal transparency. I support every one of those things. We can do them tomorrow without changing the charter.

People raised serious, specific concerns about this proposal. The kind of feedback that is supposed to shape what we do up here.

Buried underneath is the real ask.

A third term for sitting Supervisors. The same Supervisors writing the rule.

A rewrite that lets the Board weigh in on the hiring and firing of more than 600 county management positions. Merit-based hiring turned into political patronage.

In 2010, 68% of San Diego County voters told us two terms was enough.

Last week, three of my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors voted to override them.

They did not call it that. They called it “modernizing the San Diego County Charter to strengthen transparency, accountability and independent oversight”. That was the smoke. The fire was a term limit extension. For themselves.

You have to read halfway down the ballot question to find it.

An “independent” ethics commission appointed by the Supervisors, reporting to the Supervisors, investigating the Supervisors. That is not independence. That is a farce.

An “independent” budget analyst and program auditor whose salaries and selection are controlled by the same Board they are supposed to watch.

Independent in name. Captured in fact.

Here is what makes it worse.

Supervisor Anderson listened. To his credit, he came back with a revised version that stripped out the worst pieces. No political confirmation of county managers. The term limit change would have applied only to future Supervisors. Not the ones sitting on the dais today.

That is how this is supposed to work. Public speaks. Elected officials listen. The proposal gets better.

His version failed.

The self-serving version passed.

The other three Supervisors had a month to incorporate the public’s feedback. They chose not to.

I called it from the dais for what it is. One of the most deceitful and self-serving efforts I have seen in my time in public office.

I voted no. So did Supervisor Anderson. We were outvoted three to two.

Here is what matters now.

This charter amendment comes back for a second reading on June 25th. One more vote. One more public hearing. One more chance for San Diegans to make their voices heard before this goes to the ballot dressed up as reform.

Think about what is actually being asked.

The five of us ran for this office knowing the rules. Two terms.

Set by the voters. Affirmed at the ballot box with 68% support. Every one of us looked at that limit, accepted it, and asked for the job anyway.

Now three of us want to change the rules. For themselves. While sitting in the seats.

There is a word for that. It is not reform.

Real reform does not need to be hidden in the second half of a ballot question. Real independence does not run through the people being watched. Real accountability does not start by overruling 68% of the voters who already spoke.

If the ethics commission is a good idea, put it on the ballot by itself.

If the independent budget analyst is a good idea, put it on the ballot by itself. Let the voters decide each piece on its merits.

Do not bundle a self-serving term extension into a package of popular reforms and hope nobody reads past the headline.

San Diegans are smarter than that.

They always have been.

June 25th is the date. The Board needs to hear from you before then. Show up. Write in. Call your Supervisor. Tell your neighbors what is actually in this measure.

The people of this county already spoke on term limits. They were clear. They were decisive.

They deserve to be heard again before three Supervisors overrule them.

Headlines are fueling a fear of travel, but here’s why your summer vacation is still a safe bet.

It’s Too Dangerous to Travel

Cindy Rubin is afraid to travel.

Geopolitical anxiety can have a ripple effect across a map. A conflict on one side of a continent does not make the other side dangerous, but travelers conflate them anyway.

She and her husband have saved for the trip of a lifetime, a Danube river cruise in September, followed by a week in Croatia. Then she heard about the hantavirus outbreak on a recent cruise and the arrests of crew members for possession of child sexual abuse material. And she started having second thoughts.

I’ve heard from readers who backed out of their vacation in Portugal because of the war in Ukraine. That’s more than 2,000 miles away. Think of it as canceling your trip to Los Angeles because of something happening in Boston.

“Would you cancel this trip?” she asked.

Rubin isn’t alone. Less than 1 percent of respondents to a recent survey by Global Rescue (in other words, almost no one) said their concerns about personal safety abroad have abated since last year.

A slim majority (56 percent) said they’re more concerned, and the rest said nothing changed.

I get a version of Rubin’s email every day, and they all share a new kind of dread. Travelers aren’t asking me how to plan a trip. They’re asking permission not to take one.

The Delay Tax Why Your Airline Voucher Barely Covers Your Expenses Anymore A $10 voucher.

That’s what Angela Justice got after her recent flight from Boston to Chicago was delayed and then canceled.

“Let’s be honest, that barely covers a bottle of water,” says Justice, a consultant who advises biotech executives.

But the true cost of an airline delay — or the delay tax — isn’t always about business class travelers missing high-stakes meetings. Sometimes it’s just people like you and me trying to hold together plans, budgets, and expectations in a system built to offer vouchers instead of accountability from airlines.

A record 3.6 million passengers were predicted to travel Memorial Day weekend. Now more than ever, the cost of a delay is a calculation more airline passengers will have to make. And unfortunately, the airline industry’s numbers are wrong.

What is the delay tax?

Here’s what I’m talking about when I say “delay tax”: Nonrefundable hotels you can’t get to. The family wedding that ends before you land.

Child care bills that keep ticking.

Lost wages. The second flight you had to book yourself because the airline’s rescheduling timeline was useless.

These are the real costs of a system that’s pushing every risk onto travelers.

The official story is simple. When flights get delayed, airlines cover “duty of care” — a meal voucher, maybe a hotel, or a refund if the flight gets canceled. The Department of Transportation (DOT) nods. Everyone acts like the problem is solved.

It’s not.

“When airlines talk about reasonable compensation, they refer to immediate, measurable costs, things like meal vouchers, hotel stays, or partial refunds,” explains Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

“But those definitions exclude a wide range of real-world financial losses travelers face when delays disrupt their plans.”

When Airline Vouchers Meet Reality Cal Singh, who runs a financial services company in Vancouver, learned about the delay tax the hard way. A canceled flight from Toronto to New York cost his marketing team nearly $3,000 in expenses they

Illustration by Dustin Elliott couldn’t recover. The booth they’d assembled for a payments exposition was gone. The hotel night they’d booked? Forfeited. The express shipping they’d arranged?

Nonrefundable.

“Weeks of preparation can be lost by one delay,” Singh told me.

He’s rebuilt his entire travel operation around that lesson. Every business trip now includes backup flights, refundable bookings, and extra insurance. Because he learned what airlines don’t want you to know: They’re not in the business of making you whole. They’re in the business of getting you from point A to point B. Everything else is your problem.

It’s not just business travelers, of course. Donna Glass’ experience with United tells the same story.

Her recent flight from San Francisco to Orlando was delayed multiple times and then switched to a completely different aircraft. She arrived in Florida early the next morning, having spent more than 12 hours in the airport.

Her airline offered her two $15 food vouchers and 7,500 frequentflyer miles.

“We lost an entire day in Orlando,” Donna said. “The airline basically blew us off.”

Here’s the real question regulators refuse to ask: Is that fair?

The Compensation Illusion When airlines talk about “reason-

able compensation,” they’re working from a narrow playbook. The DOT focuses on immediate, basic costs like the price of your airfare.

Europe goes further with its consumer protections, offering compensation for delays. But even the strictest rules exclude the real-world damage caused by delays.

Airlines are just following the law.

But the law was written in a different era, when travel was simpler and airlines were more generous with their passengers. Now, delays are chronic and airlines are watching every penny. Regulators haven’t caught up.

Jacob Wedderburn-Day, CEO of Stasher, an airport luggage storage network, sees the ripple effects every day. He’s watched thousands of passengers absorb costs that go way beyond a meal voucher.

“The hidden costs are very high, and the passengers pay nearly all of them,” Wedderburn-Day said.

“Airlines are basing fair compensation on their own operating expenses and regulatory requirements, rather than actual economic impact on travelers.”

Maybe that’s the problem. The delay tax exists because airlines calculate compensation based on what it costs them to reschedule flights, not what it costs you to miss the reason you flew in the first place.

TinLeg, a travel insurance company, has the receipts: In 2025, the average payout was $388 per claim.

The single biggest culprit was airline delays. TinLeg found nearly 28

percent of all claims were tied to flight delays — up from 26 percent in 2024.

Sometimes, airlines will voluntarily cover some of your expenses, such as toiletries or a change of clothes — to a point.

Even When Airlines are Generous, There’s a Catch If you can get an airline to compensate you for your expenses — which can happen — there’s a problem that customers create for themselves.

Raymond Yorke at Redpoint Resolutions has watched travelers leave money on the table because they didn’t document everything.

“The travelers who get reimbursed quickest are almost always those who kept receipts, took photos, saved emails, and wrote down what happened — in real time,” Yorke says.

A safer bet is to buy travel insurance, but you still have to keep your documentation for some claims.

(With bigger travel insurance companies, flight delay claims are automatic and don’t require any documentation.)

“A proper travel protection plan can fill the gap airlines won’t,” says Carlos Cividanes, vice president of business strategy and development at TravelSafe Travel Insurance.

But even travel insurance won’t end the delay tax.

He is a modest, humble individual . . . chiefly, it is said, because he has a lot to be humble about.

He has maintained his ability to be a smooth, persuasive talker . . . evidence of which is his having persuaded his lovely Ms. Evelyn to tolerate him for some 23 years or more.

They are a couple and have been known to occasionally embrace and even say nice things to one another, though Evelyn has been known to whisper her thoughts. Lyle just assumes they are lovely, endearing thoughts.

Thus endeth the tale of Lyle the Magnificent, though humble in spirit and deed.

Bless his heart even more because he insisted on waiting for me outside the hospital until I was released. (He couldn’t come in because of COVID 19).

Then bless his heart again, even more, because when they told me it might be two or three hours until my tests were complete due to a back up in the CT Lab . . and I called Friedrich and told him to go home . . . I’d call him when I was ready for discharge and he could come pick me up. And he refused, saying he was my family and he would wait.

I felt extremely uncomfortable with him waiting so long. I don’t like to inconvenience anyone and he had already gone above and beyond any call of duty.

Please get ready to bless his heart one more time because I was now told it might be four hours as they needed multiple tests.

Again, he refused to go home. He insisted on waiting, in his car. He said he had books and papers to read and was listening to the radio and he’d be fine.

Four hours in the ER and we still weren’t done. I called him and insisted he go home, that I felt very uncomfortable with him waiting all this time. I had also called Evelyn and gave her an update. She called Friedrich and urged him to come home. “When lyle is ready to be discharged I’ll come and get him.”

Again he insisted that lyle was his “dad” and he’d wait till I was finished and they had a diagnosis and treatment plan.

We had arrived at the ER at 5pm.

Finally, at 12:30am they released me.

The CT Scan found NO kidney stone (Hooray!) . . . and also found that my gall bladder and pancreas looked to be in great shape. No sign of any infection. I told the doctor, a young Asian lady, “You’re giving me a lot of great news. But why am I hurting?”

“We don’t know,” she said. “You may have had a kidney stone and it already has passed and you are feeling residual plain. We’ve called Man About Town continued on page 14

What needs to change?

Justice’s point about the cascading effects of delays is central to understanding why the current system is broken. It treats delays as isolated incidents affecting one person. But when you’re running a company, leading a team, or managing a critical life moment, a delay ripples outward.

Michal Strahilevitz, a professor of marketing at Saint Mary’s College of California who studies business ethics, thinks the whole compensation framework is backwards.

“Airlines do not compensate passengers for pain, suffering, or emotional distress caused by delays,” she says. “But in an ideal world, they would at least try.”

The data backs that up. AirHelp surveyed Americans and found that 41 percent lost money on their last flight disruption. Meanwhile, 91 percent believe airlines should pay compensation for disruptions. And 84 percent of Americans would support an EU-style compensation model — one that actually accounts for losses.

“Airlines need to be financially responsible for the total economic

cost of delays that they incur, and not merely direct costs,” says Wedderburn-Day of Stasher. “There is no incentive yet to change because travelers all bear downstream costs.

The model changes only when airlines start to experience the financial bite of chronic unreliability.”

That’s true. Right now, airlines have no reason to operate more reliably because they don’t pay the true cost of delays. The expense is yours to bear. Until that changes, expect more delay taxes.

So here’s my advice: If you’re planning to fly, build redundancy into your bookings. Get insurance. And document everything.

Because airlines aren’t going to make you whole. The system isn’t designed to.

At least, not yet.

The Pastor Says . . . Smile “Smile and the world smiles with you. Cry, and you cry alone”. Ella Wheeler Wilcox, a favorite poet of mine, wrote these words in 1883. Actually, it is a variation on the opening words of her poem “Solitude” and captures Stanley Gordon West’s theme. Have you ever noticed the magic of a smile? I don’t know if there is a national holiday called ‘smile’, but if not, I am proposing one. I do it for myself as an act of atonement for all the days I could have, and should have. It is the one thing my family, especially my wife, enjoyed most in our relationship.

Experts say it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown.

Actually, people can get tired of frowning. A person can wear themselves out by frowning. Imagine living longer and happier if we smiled more. Whoever it was that captured the smiling face did more for society than making millions of dollars.

In the biblical book of Ecclesiastes, there is a reflection on life when the author says, ‘I know that there is nothing better for them to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime …’ This tells us that there is something worthwhile to smile about.

Many could well ask whether there is enough for us to smile about. After all, life can be hard and disappointing. Even the Bible says that in this life, you will have tribulation. Job, a major biblical figure, is often portrayed as a man of suffering. In the agony of his life with the loss of his possessions and family, he says that ‘man’s life is brief and full of trouble’. How then do we face such a world with a smile? Even in the religious context, we don’t read anywhere where Jesus says that we should go through life with a frown and be miserable. In fact, if we smile falsely or hypocritically, we not only do others harm but also ourselves. Again, does Jesus expect us to be perennially happy? Some religious expressions seem to have a positive, optimistic view of life most of the time, but it takes effort. Smiling isn’t easy even in good times.

Swan Song - Part I of III

We are living in an amazing and seminal time in human history.

In this century, we found a way to provide near instant access to mankind’s ever growing knowledge base and to apply an artificial intelligence to parse it for answers and solutions. This knowledge base dramatically exceeds that of any human and the artificial intelligence is potentially free of human bias and prejudice. The internet based vehicle for accessing these technologies is called the IW (Intelligent Web). These technologies are young and developing rapidly, but already they are affecting our civilization in ways we don’t yet comprehend.

Nome and I married in 1965. The next thirty years went by in a blur as our employers moved us from Indiana to Florida, Minnesota, Canada and the Bay Area of California. As

Operations VP, I managed business divisions for Westinghouse, NCR, United Telecom and Packard Bell and Nome worked in Operations Analysis. Through those years we bought and sold six homes, lived in a half dozen more and lost count of how many schools our four kids attended. In 1995 we found ourselves in San Diego. The kids had “flown the coop” and the house was quiet. Nome and I decided to flee the corporate “rat-race” and go it on our own. We opened “The Computer Factory” at our present address in downtown San Marcos in September of 1995.

Thirty+ years have passed since we opened our doors. Today we are witnessing a fundamental change in our culture and future.

Nome and I are in our mid-eighties and part of the DI (Digital Immigrant) generation. DIs are folks forty-five and older who were adults when AI (Artificial Intelligence) was combined with high speed Internet access to create the IW (Intelligent Web) in late 2001.

DNs (Digital Natives) are folks thirty five and younger who grew up under the ubiquitous influence of the IW. Since 2001, both DIs and DNs have increasingly used the IW as a primary information source. By 2026 the average daily usage of the IW was six hours/ day for DIs and eight hours/day for DNs. Both groups today use the Internet as a primary source for information, entertainment and communications. The major difference lies in the way each group regards the information provided by the Internet’s AI. DIs consider the AI generated information from

the IW to be an external source of information subject to internal review and verification. By contrast the DN tends to consider AI generated information from the IW to be internally generated information requiring no further internal verification. The internalization of AI generated data by DNs is the fundamental difference in the way DIs and DNs regard IW information.

Much has changed in the 30+ years since we opened our business in San Marcos. The city has grown from 30,000 to 100,000 souls and the morning and afternoon rush hour traffic has become something to be avoided. The high speed AI stoked IW is now 25 years old. It has assumed most of the traditional functions once considered the domain of stand-alone PCs. Today’s IW links networked “data bases”

to networked servers at a fraction of the cost of “local” processing.

The mass storage capability and AI of the IW enables modestly configured PCs to serve as terminals.

With the IW doing the “heavy lifting”, a PC with 8 -16 GB memory and a CPU Benchmark rating of 5000-10,000 is perfect.

The PC served us well for three decades as the flagship for consumer internet technology. Today it is mostly an Internet access device.

The PC has no unique talent of its own. It is a general purpose machine that can be hooked up to any number of other devices and perform I/O tasks on the IW. There is no longer any doubt. “The Internet Age” is here and the “The PC Age” is over, done, kaput, right? Maybe not quite yet! Next week part II of “Swan Song”.

Fleas are like little vampires. They live on blood. Once they find a food source (our pets) they’re hard to get rid of and they spread quickly.

What to do about it? The best way to control fleas is not to get them in the first place.

If you’re concerned about using products like Comfortis, Frontline, or Advantage, or if you or your pet are allergic to these products, try some home remedies, but remember they take four to six weeks to be effective.

Now that your pet is flea-free, you need to get rid of the pests in your home.

• Adding Sulphur to your pet’s food once a week can have an impact.

• Black Walnut Hull capsules can repel fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.

Just because you see a flea doesn’t mean your pet “has fleas.” How do you know if your pet has fleas?

Separate the fur and look for “Flea dirt.” It looks like little, black pebbles. Comb out some of it and put it on a damp paper towel. If it turns red like blood, your pet has fleas.

Bob Belford and Steve Crenshaw remind me of playful otters. They’re both originally from Canoga Park, a neighbourhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles.

As far as Belford and Crenshaw are concerned, getting older is not necessarily a negative. These two Pollyannas remain sweet-natured optimists. Wearing their Old Guys Rule t-shirts they proudly refer to the t-shirt lettering as their “Badge of Honour.”

The “Old Guys Rule” website clearly echoes the sentiments of Bob and Steve, referring to their tshirt as a “Badge of Honor,” along with this philosophy: “The toils of youth are now your experience . . . no longer the student, but the teacher.”

Bob Belford and Steve Crenshaw never remain serious long. They continue to try to top each other, especially since they know I’m a writer for THE PAPER. With a sparkle in his eye, Belford releases another car-related bit of lev-

ity, “My wife had her driver’s test the other day. She got 8 out of 10.

The other 2 guys jumped out of the way!”

Steve laughs, pulls his pants up, readjusts his belt and like a tennis player, serves up his return shot, “I gave up my seat to a blind person on the bus. That’s how I lost my job as a bus driver!”

I take my leave, but, not before saying goodbye. “See you guys again at Cruisin’ Grand.”

I’m not really sure they hear me as they continue to trade barbs in the backdrop.

As I walk away, I can still hear them in the distance, trying to top one another. “I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather,” Bob shouts, “not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car!”

That’s funny.

And it can also be said that, “When everyone’s eyes are smiling -- those smiling eyes can be found at Cruisin’ Grand.”

We need to keep in touch with a smile. The older we get, the more we need to practice it. We can do that by just smiling, perhaps with a reminder to practice it. We can smile when a bird sings, when someone smiles at us, and even when we make mistakes, with a reminder that we are not perfect.

It could also be when there is something we enjoy, such as sunshine, the bloom and fragrance of a flower, or an amazing feat such as encircling the moon. While in most cases we frown when we are unhappy or disappointed with something or someone, it helps to smile to break the solemnity. All one needs to do is practice smiling and then judge the result. We can smile at the response and result.

They then decided to do an ultra sound scan of my tummy - wondering if maybe the gall bladder might be inflamed and/or infected. This, too, took time. Result came back.

Gall bladder is fine. No infection.

Looks to be in perfect condition.

After seven and a half hours they arrived at a diagnosis - diverticulitis. (Pockets in the wall(s) of the intestine that can accumulate food and become infected. They sent me home with a fist-full of Amoxicillin, an oral anti-biotic. They offered pain pills but I declined (a mistake. I later had several severe bouts of pain).

Can you imagine waiting for someone, in your car, for 7.5 hours?

I can’t.

I can’t describe how bad I felt at subjecting Friedrich to this - and I still feel bad. But he won’t hear of my protests. ‘Dad,’ he said, “you’re my family. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you. Waiting in a car, reading and listening to the radio, it’s childs-play. Don’t ever hesitate if you need me to run you to the hospital or otherwise care for you.’

That, to me, is the definition of true friendship. A friend who will do anything for you. It’s a rarity these days.

Freidrich is a very special guy. Evelyn and I both love him and think he is truly a blessing in our lives.

Epilogue. After leaving the hospital we were both hungry and wound up at a McDonald’s in Del Mar. After feasting on McDonalds’ hamburgers (the only place open at 1am) we made a major mistake and made a right turn on Via de la Valle, which does lead back into Escondido but is also a series of very windy roads, with very little in the way of directional signs, and no street lights. We drove past many beautiful, large,

Had we turned left we were three blocks away from the northbound 5 freeway and would have been home in less than 30 minutes.

Long story short . . .it took us another 45 minutes to 1 hour to finally emerge and find our way home. I got home and into bed at 2:30am.

I learned later that Friedrich was so wired and wound up that he didn’t go to bed till 5am, sleeping till noon. Saturday morning Evelyn and I joined him for breakfast to, in small measure, repay him for his puppy-dog like loyalty.

Is Friedrich a great friend or what?
