Some of us were not even around in the 1950s. Not even born during the 1960s, either. And yet, countless Americans in their teens and 20s today know much about the ‘50s and ‘60s era through cult films, such as “American Graffiti,” and “Fast Times At Ridgemont High.”

At Escondido’s Annual “Cruisin’ Grand” event downtown, take a gander around you and you’ll often see teenaged girls in poodle dresses and pony tails, and teen-boys emu-

lating the clothing and hairstyle of yesteryear!

Today, teenagers in Japan, England, Germany, South America and other foreign countries have created clubs which copy the Americanstyle clothing of the ‘50s and ‘60s era. For example, Elvis Presley impersonatorcontests are an annual occurrence overseas, as are Marilyn Monroe look-a-like events and fan clubs.

From our iconic comic books, movies, hot rods and muscle cars against

the backdrop of America’s own music invention -- rock ‘n’ roll -- our 1950s and 1960s culture has proven irresistible nostalgia and lives on, even beyond our own American shores.

Much of what occurred in 1950s and 1960s America is not lost on the so called ‘Old Timers’ – much of that culture is recalled and re-lived in our history classes.

Close your eyes and journey back in time onboard our imaginary time machine and see what was reshaping America, and the world at

large, during the 50s and 60s. Hurry before we depart! Quickly!

Climb onboard our time machine and put on your safety belts. Here is our fun multiple-choice quiz just for you and, in the process of having fun, we’ll learn much about our spinning Blue Marble back then.

Whoa! Our first stop . . . is the year 1957.

A. Cosmonaut 1

B. Pravda 1

C. Sputnik 1

D. Bolshevik 1

If you selected “C” Sputnik 1, well, you didn’t miss any of your history classes in school. On October 4, 1957 world history was made when the Soviet Union launched the world’s first man-made satellite to orbit our planet Earth. It was called “Sputnik 1” (“sputnik” is Russian for “satellite”). This scientific and technological achievement shocked the world with Sputnik 1 orbiting our planet at a dizzying 18,000 mph, completing one orbit around our Earth every 96.2 minutes! Sputnik 1 was a surprise event which created the “Sputnik Crisis” here in 1950s America and triggered the “Space Race,” which became a part of the Cold War era between the two nations, the Soviet Union and the United States.

You may have heard on the news about a Southern California man who was put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found he owned 100 guns and allegedly had 100,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his home.

The house also featured a secret escape tunnel.

By Southern California standards, someone owning 100,000 rounds is considered “mentally unstable.”

BUT…

A. Franklin D. Roosevelt

B. Harry S. Truman

C. Dwight D. Eisenhower

D. Richard M. Nixon

If you selected “C” Dwight D. Eisenhower, I can tell you did not ditch any of your history classes! Congratulations! You are correct!

Dwight D. Eisenhower was an American Army general who served as the 34th President of the United States through most of the 1950s decade, serving as Commander-In-Chief of our country from 1953 to 1961. Eisenhower was U.S. President when the Soviet Union launched history’s very first manmade satellite.

WHAT WAS THE AVERAGE ANNUAL U.S. INCOME IN 1957?

A. $2,992 per year

B. $3,400 per year

C. $3,914 per year

D. $4,713 per year

I know that all the annual income figures above are truly shocking to your nervous system (and bank book) right now, but if you selected “D” you’re right on the money!

According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ “Occupational Wage Survey,” the average annual

In Montana or Oklahoma, he’d be called “The neighborhood ‘Go-To’ guy.”

In Idaho, he’d be called “a likely gubernatorial candidate.”

In Georgia, he’d be called “an eligible bachelor.”

earnings for a full-time male worker in 1957 was $4,713. This would be about $41,761.37 today. The average annual earnings for women in 1957 was $3,008, or about $26,653.56 in today’s dollars.

The average annual income in America hovers around $44,148 per year (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2016).

By the way, in 1957 the average cost of a new house was $12,220, monthly rent was $90 and the average cost of a new car sold for $2,749. Gas for your car was 24cents per gallon, average cost of children’s shoes was $5.95 and a first-class postage stamp to mail your letter was 3-cents.

IN 1951 WHAT FAMOUS HAMBURGER CHAIN STARTED RIGHT HERE IN SAN DIEGO?

A. McDonald’s B. In-N-Out Burger C. Carl’s Jr. D. Jack in the Box

Hmm, this is making me hungry. If you picked “D” Jack in the Box, you are spot-on. The world’s first Jack in the Box was founded in San Diego on February 21, 1951, by businessman, Robert O. Peterson, and was lo-

the store quietly fuming.

Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries.

Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward looked into the cart and asked sweetly, “So which six items would you like to buy?”

(Wouldn’t it be great if that happened more often?)

For the record, McDonald’s was founded in San Bernardino in 1940 when the McDonald family moved their hamburger stand from Monrovia, California, and changed its name from “The Airdrome” to “McDonald’s Bar-B-Que.” Most of the 25 items on the menu were barbeque.

In-N-Out Burger started in Baldwin Park, California in 1940. Carl’s Jr. first appeared in 1941 Los Angeles as a hot dog cart, believe it or not.

WHAT WORLD LEADER CREATED A SCANDAL BECAUSE HE COULDN’T VISIT DISNEYLAND?

A. Winston Churchill (UK)

B. David Ben-Gurion (Israel)

C. Mao Tse-tung (Republic of China)

D. Nikita Khrushchev (Soviet Union)

If you chose “D” Nikita Khrushchev, you are absolutely correct!

The First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, created an international incident when he was not allowed to visit Disneyland at Anaheim, California.

Here’s the juicy details.

In 1959, Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, visited the United States for an extended visit and a summit meeting with President Dwight D. Eisenhower. After visiting various California tourist sites, such as Hollywood, the Soviet leader made it abundantly clear that he wanted to visit Disneyland in Anaheim. When his request was denied on the grounds of security precautions not being adequate to protect him, Khrushchev threw a tantrum that reverberated around the world!

Khrushchev shouted: “But just now I was told that I could not go to Disneyland! I asked, ‘Why not?!’ What is it, do you have rocketlaunching pads there?! I do not know!”

Khrushchev’s rant was printed in newspapers around the world and was reported on television news. The Soviet leader’s words grew more intense, almost reaching a level of hysteria when he shouted: “What is it?! Is there an epidemic of cholera there or something?! Or have gangsters taken over the place (Disneyland) that can destroy me?! Then what must I do?! Commit suicide?! This is the situation: I am your guest!! For me, the situation is inconceivable! I cannot find words to explain this to my people!!”

This international incident caused great tension and embarrassment for both the Soviet Union and the United States, all amplified during the Cold War tension at the time.

A frustrated and red-faced Khrushchev, angrily departed Los Angeles

the next morning. But the surreal incident only helped popularize the Disneyland park, affording it vast global recognition, in spite of Khrushchev’s temper tantrum.

Nikita Khrushchev would embarrass the Soviet Union again in New York in 1960 when, in a fit of anger, he removed one of his shoes and proceeded to bang his desk at the United Nations in protest to a speech by Philippine delegate Lorenzo Sumulong. Members of Khrushchev’s own Communist delegation at the time went on record as expressing their own “embarrassment and displeasure” at the Soviet leader’s bizarre and “peasant-like behavior” of “shoe banging” which they felt reflected poorly on the Soviet Union. Khrushchev would later be removed as leader in 1964. (I suppose one could say, with some poetic license, that Khrushchev was finally . . . ‘given the shoe’ by his own Soviet hierarchy.

WHAT WORLD FAMOUS ACTOR WAS FIRST-CHOICE TO PLAY MATT DILLON ON TV’S “GUNSMOKE”?

A. Clint Eastwood

B. Roy Rogers

C. Charlton Heston

D. John Wayne

Television’s classic western “Gunsmoke” remains the longest running western series in history, running a full 20 seasons, from 1955 to 1975 (and can still be seen on reruns today, which means Gunsmoke is now picking up a new generation of loyal fans!). CBS’ first-choice to play Marshal Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke was John Wayne. So “D” is the bullseye answer. Unable to lure John Wayne away from the big silver screen, the CBS executives had a total of 26 actors screen-tested to play the lead role of Matt Dillon, Marshal of Dodge City. The field was finally narrowed down to two actors: William Conrad (who was the voice of Marshal Matt Dillon on the Gunsmoke radio series (19521961), and Raymond Burr (who would win fame in TV’s Perry Mason and Ironside series). Both William Conrad and Raymond Burr became the front-runners for the role of U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon and, in fact, almost snagged the part in Gunsmoke. But, in the final analysis, both Conrad and Burr were rejected. Top CBS producers said they both: “were too fat.”

As history has it, James Arness –standing at 6’ 7” tall in his stocking feet – landed the role and became immortalized in the part as U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City, Kansas.

Carlsbad Police Arrest Two suspects in separate Elder fraud Cases

The Carlsbad Police Department, in collaboration with the FBI’s Elder Justice Task Force and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, has arrested two suspects in separate but similar elder fraud cases involving the theft of more than $140,000 in cash and gold bullion.

On March 24, 2025, a Carlsbad resident fell victim to an elaborate scam after a fake computer popup prompted her to call a number linked to individuals impersonating Apple Security and Wells Fargo’s Fraud Unit. The scammers falsely claimed her identity had been compromised and persuaded her to withdraw and surrender cash and gold under the pretense of protecting her assets.

Over several days, the victim was instructed to place the money in taped shoeboxes and hand them to someone posing as a federal courier. The fraud resulted in a loss of approximately $121,156. The victim later informed her grandson, who helped her report the crime to police.

On April 3, 2025, detectives arrested Tang Chen, 37, of Ontario, California, during a planned pickup at the victim’s residence. Chen was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on felony charges of:

• Penal Code 368(d)(1) – Theft from an elder or dependent adult

• Penal Code 532(a) – Obtaining money by false pretenses

• Penal Code 182(a)(1) – Conspiracy to commit a crime

In a separate case on April 29, 2025, another Carlsbad resident received a phone call from a man identifying himself as a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigator named “Jack Brown.” The

The victim, believing the documents and the story to be legitimate, withdrew the funds and handed them to an individual posing as an FTC courier at her home.

On May 1, while detectives were conducting a follow-up interview, the scammer called again requesting an additional $10,000.

Under police guidance, the victim pretended to comply. Detectives prepared an envelope filled with fake $100 bills, which was picked up later that day by Gurjant Singh, 33, of Riverside County. Officers followed Singh after the pickup and detained him on the I-5 freeway. The envelope was recovered from his vehicle. Singh was booked on the same felony charges as Chen.

Both cases remain under investigation. The Carlsbad Police Department reminds community members that no legitimate agency will ever request cash, gold, or personal assets to be handed over to a courier. Residents are encouraged to verify suspicious claims with a trusted family member or local law enforcement before taking action.

According to the San Diego Elder Justice Task Force, scams like these result in over $100 million in losses annually, affecting more than a thousand seniors in the region. If you have been a victim of fraud or a scam, report it immediately to your local law enforcement agency and to the FBI at www.IC3.gov. Thank you ! Jack Batchie

Hello Mr. Davis,

This is in regard to The Paper, page 4, May 8, 2025 Man About Town, When I was Younger - Vietnam.

I read, and reread your article a few times, as I spent some time there in Vietnam, at some of the locations you mentioned. My name is Juan Furler, currently President of Vietnam Veterans of America, California Chapter 1147 in Escondido. We meet every 3rd Wednesday of the Month at 4 pm. Location is the Veterans Memorial Hall (American Legion Post 149), 230 E. Park Ave., Escondido, 92025.

Our Chapter address is P.O. Box 1014, Escondido, CA 92033.

We are in our 3rd year since we started this Chapter, dedicated to Vietnam Veterans. It is a place for Vietnam Veterans, weather In

Country or serving in that Era to meet. We hold a quick meeting to update our members on items that may concern us as Vietnam Veterans, especially on medical care or benefits, and events that the Chapter may be involved with. Then we gather in the back of our meeting hall, have a bit to eat, provided by different Chapter Member, sit, and share some of our experiences.

Our members include an Army nurse (Gina) who worked in the trauma unit at the hospital in Danang, a couple of Huey pilots, members from all the Military branches. We share a bond that others do not understand.

I served 3 tours in Vietnam as a Army sergeant, serving in Lai Khe, Ho Chi Min City (Saigon back then), and a few other camps with Charlie Company, 75th Abn. Rangers.

This email turned out long, and I apologize. Our next Chapter meeting is on May 21, 2025 @ 4 pm. I respectfully invite you to our meeting, no pressure, etc., see who we are, what we are about, Vietnam Veterans.

Thank you, Juan Furler, President VVA Chapter 1147 Escondido

Response from the editor:

First off, thank you for your service. I appeciate the invite but may not make it as my wife has dementia and there would be no caregiver to look after her; I am her primary caregiver.

Please send me notices of events.

WHEN WERE THE WORDS “UNDER GOD” ADDED TO THE U.S. “PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE”?

A. 1951

B. 1954

C. 1959

D. 1962

The words “under God” were officially added to the U.S. “Pledge of Allegiance” on June 14, 1954, by a Joint Resolution of Congress, during the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. So, “B” 1954, is the correct answer.

I N THE 1960s WHAT WAS ESCONDIDO’S LARGEST CROP?

A. Grapes

B. Tomatoes

C. Oranges

D. Avocados

Mmmm, this may prove tricky for most. But, if you decided on “D” avocados, you are quite the quizmaster, or quiz-mistress! But, at one time the name Escondido was synonymous with grapes. Escondido was primarily an agriculture community mostly known for growing Muscat grapes, with even wineries dotting the north county region, and even Escondido’s primary park bearing the name of Grape Day Park. However, by the 1960s this changed and avocados became the largest local crop in

Suzie take a week off, head up the coast to the Ritz-Carlton . . .and just relax. Allow themselves to be pampered, spoiled, attended to. I even suggested this to Charlie (Mitich, the owner and namesake of Charlie’s, and father of Suzie.) I pointed out the staff is well trained, Bill and Suzie could take a week off knowing full well the restaurant would continue to be well run by a well trained and efficient staff). “They can take off whenever they want . . but they don’t seem to want to leave the place.” Charlie is all but retired . . coming into the restaurant several times a day, early mornings and again in the evening . . but doesn’t get as involved in day to day operations.

Charlie and I both recognize that two or three days off wouldn’t do it. They should have at least a week. You see, it takes at least three days to “get away” from the business. The first day or two your mind is on the business . . on the third day you’ve begun to relax. And then

Escondido, California. Avocados have turned out to be a $40-million-a-year agricultural produce in our city of Escondido, California. In essence, Escondido business is more rolling in guacamole than grape juice.

By the way, Escondido – whose original inhabitants were the Luiseno Native Americans – had a 1960 population of only 16,377. Its current population is 151,613. How times have changed!

WHAT WAS THE FIRST JAPANESE CAR SOLD IN AMERICA?

A. Honda B. Datsun C. Mazda

D. Toyota

The correct answer is “D” Toyota. Japan’s Toyota Toyopet Crown model was the very first Japanesemade car exported out of Japan, shipped to the continental United States and first sold here in 1958.

Toyota Motor Sales led the early charge to introduce Toyotas to mainland America as early as 1956, paving the way for future reality. On August 25, 1957, the first two Toyota Crown models docked in California but had to stay onboard the ship in compliance with U.S. driving laws and requirements. For example, headlights and other safety features were fitted after arrival. After receiving a California retail license on December 11, 1957, five

it’s back to the grind. Otherwise, day four and day five you and your body and mind finally have relaxed and are beginning to enjoy your holiday.

Trust me, I know how it works. I’m kinda cut from the same bolt of cloth as Bill, Suzie and Charlie. My long time partner and pal, Evelyn Madison, owns a time share at Tamarack Beach Resort in Carlsbad. We would go there once every year . . but usually only for two or three days. We had this paper to produce every week and deadlines to meet. I always noticed by day three both she and I had begun to really relax . . and enjoy our stay.

And then it was time to come home . . .with four more days left available at the time share. Unused. By us. She’d normally let other family members use the remaining time share time.

Nope . . you need at least a week of vacation to properly relax.

But Bill and Suzie? Nope. They’d rather be greeting customers . . . seeing to it that the world is well served and well fed. Even when

Toyota dealerships were created in July of 1958.

The first Toyota was sold in 1958 at a cost of $1,999.

The downside at the time was that this early Toyota model struggled to keep up with the fast pace of American cars on smooth, fastflowing blacktop driving roads. When this Toyota model eventually got up to 60 mph – a speed that was rare in Japan at the time –the car often shuddered and shook so much that the driver often could not see out of the rearview mirror.

(Note: The American Honda Motor Company, Inc. (AHM) opened in Los Angeles on June 11, 1959, and was the first overseas “subsidiary” in North America, which included motorcycles. The first Honda car imported and sold in mainland America, however, wasn’t until 1969 and was a small Honda 600 hatchback which is still, historically, preserved today by Honda historian & mechanic Tim Miegs in California (Miegs currently houses over 200 Honda 600 hatchbacks).

Honda would create the very first Japanese car manufacturing plant inside the continental United States in 1982 at Marysville, Ohio. In this context, the Honda Accord was the first Japanese car (created in America) and sold in America. This often causes confusion as to which Japanese car was truly firstsold in America. Toyota is the cor-

I know Bill has a bad back. So do I. No one appreciates the pain of a bad back like someone who also has a bad back. I have seen days when I knew Bill was in pain . . but you’d never know it. Always there at the front . . great big smile, welcoming you into Charlie’s. He’s a tough guy. Dedicated.

I also remember when COVID created major hardships for the restaurant trade . . . and I remember seeing an exhausted Suzie . .sometimes covering double shifts . . . but always with a smile . . . kindly helping hungry patrons to relax and enjoy a great meal.

They have weathered some heavy storms over the years . . . and that’s one reason Charlie’s has become home to so many in North County . . .including me. I have my “office” at Charlies and will meet clients, vendors, staff from The Paper . . . on a regular basis . . and I always know I’ll be getting great food . . .great service and more than fair prices. don’t Let san diego County become the Next budget disaster

For years, I’ve worked to ensure San Diego County remains financially strong and prepared for emergencies. Through careful planning and fiscal discipline, we’ve maintained a responsible reserve fund—so that when disaster strikes, whether it’s wildfires, flooding, or an economic downturn, we’re ready to step up and protect our communities.

But now, that stability is under threat.

Just look around us: the City of San Diego is facing a staggering $258 million budget deficit. The State of California? An eye-popping $68 billion in the red. And who ends up

paying for their failure? You—the taxpayer.

In fact, it wasn’t long ago that San Diego County had to step in and help the City of San Diego during devastating floods—floods made worse by years of neglected infrastructure and poor budget planning at the city level.

Now, some on the Board of Supervisors want to take our County down the same dangerous road. At our most recent Board meeting, two of my colleagues—Supervisors Terra Lawson-Remer and Monica Montgomery-Steppe— pushed a reckless plan to raid nearly $380 million from the County’s emergency reserves. That’s money meant to be used during real crises—not to grow government for the sake of politics.

What’s worse, this proposal came despite projections showing the County faces a $138 million deficit next year—one that’s expected to swell to over $321 million within five years. These are serious warning signs. Instead of reining in spending, these supervisors want to unlock the reserves and are already floating the idea of raising taxes to make up the difference.

We all know California is already one of the most expensive places to live. Families and seniors are being priced out by high gas prices, electricity bills, housing costs—and now they want to add higher taxes on top of it?

Thankfully, we stopped this dangerous proposal—for now. But the fight is far from over.

If we allow political games to drain our reserves, we’ll end up like the City of San Diego and the State of California: broke and unable to act when emergencies strike.

That’s not the future I want for our county. I’ll keep fighting to protect taxpayers, stop wasteful spending, and keep San Diego County on sound financial footing. Because in times of crisis, families shouldn’t have to pay the price for government mismanagement.

Let’s keep San Diego County strong, secure, and financially responsible—for today and for the generations to come.

California State Assembly District 75 • Carl DeMaio

Earlier this year, I was kicked off the Assembly Budget Committee not because I broke the rules, but because I told the truth.

I exposed the lie behind Governor Gavin Newsom’s claim that California had a “modest surplus.” I showed that we were headed toward a massive fiscal meltdown but the Democrat supermajority didn’t like that so they silenced me.

Now Newsom has released his updated May Budget Revision, and the truth is finally catching up to him.

Here’s what you need to know:

A $12 Billion Deficit and it’s only the beginning

Newsom now admits there’s a $12 billion shortfall, but don’t be fooled, the real picture is even worse. He’s relying on budget tricks like:

• Borrowing from special funds.

• Draining $12 billion from our Rainy Day reserves.

• Delaying payments to push problems into the future.

And while the governor pretends things will get better, his own projections show deficits returning year after year: $14.3 billion in 2026–27, $19.1 billion in 2027–28, and $12.7 billion in 2028–29.

reckless spending Caused This Crisis

Newsom wants you to believe this is about “global headwinds” and “tariffs.” That’s nonsense. The crisis is self-inflicted. Since 2019:

• State spending has exploded to $321.9 billion, a 60% increase in just five years

member and then Mayor of Escondido, and owner of KOWN Radio, which I managed for seven years, was a “workaholic.” Many nights I’d be working late and there was Alan . . in his office, studying files and documents for an upcoming council meeting ... or working on some other project. He had a great family and family life but he poured himself into the job.

My dear friend, retired Pastor Dick Huls . . . long retired from his church he still stays busy seven days a week. He still pastors a group at a North County retirement home on Sundays . . he has several Bible study meetings each week, he still conducts weddings and funerals and offers scattering of ashes at sea from his 20’ boat . . . he’s an active farmer, loves to farm, is a beekeeper . . . for many years he also served as the Chaplain for the Escondido Police Department. He’s also retired Navy where he served as a chaplain. When he does have some spare time you can usually find him out on the Great Pacific Ocean, fishing.

Moral of the story? Find what you love doing, then either find someone to pay you to do it or open your own business and do it! You’ll be happy!

• The government workforce has ballooned, with the average state employee now costing taxpayers $177,000 in salary and benefits.

• Instead of investing in critical needs, Newsom is spending billions on ideological pet projects.

Here’s what he’s funding even during a deficit:

$1 billion more for High-speed rail. This wasteful boondoggle has already cost taxpayers over $100 billion, and there’s still no train in sight. Yet the May Revision commits another $1 billion annually to continue construction on a project that has become a monument to government dysfunction.

$12.4 billion for free Health Care for undocumented immigrants. While services for law-abiding, taxpaying Californians are being slashed, Newsom is pouring nearly $13 billion into Medi-Cal coverage for undocumented immigrants.

I had two days booked solid. Tonight I was to fly “Spooky”, an old C47 aircraft (a cargo plane that saw much service over “The Hump” in Burma during WWII). This afternoon I had flown a FAC (Forward Air Controller), the military version of a Cessna 170 that would fly low and slow over target areas and mark the target area with WP (“Willy Pete”, the nickname for White Phosphorus rockets) followed by an attack on the marked target area by F100 jet fighters or some similar fighter aircraft. Tomorrow morning I was to be on the other end. . .sitting in the back seat of an F100 which would be delivering ordnance to targets marked by a FAC.

But for now I was on board “Spooky”. There were several versions of Spooky in Vietnam, the best known was the C47. There was also a helicopter version that utilized a giant spotlight and heavy cannon/machine gun suppression fire. The C47 Spooky had a modern day version of the old Gatling Gun which delivered something like 1800 rounds a minute. I would have termed it a machine gun but I believe they called it, technically, a

WHAT WAS ELVIS PRESLEY’S FIRST NO. 1 “GOLD RECORD”?

A. Heartbreak Hotel

B. I Forgot to Remember to Forget

C. Don’t Be Cruel

D. Love Me Tender

Elvis “The Pelvis” Presley had loads of hit records, but, if you chose “A” Heartbreak Hotel, well, you obviously have a “hunka-hunka-burnin’ love” for Elvis facts!

Congratulations! But first, let’s clear away some cobwebs: Elvis Presley’s very first #1 hit single (even before Heartbreak Hotel) was “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” – but, it did not sell a million copies to earn a Gold Record. That honor goes to “Heartbreak Hotel” which not only climbed to #1 on the national charts in February of 1956 – but, it sold over one million copies, officially earning “The King” his first Gold Record.

IN 1967 WHAT WAS THE BIG MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGH?

A. Polio Vaccine

B. Birth Control Pill

C. Kidney Transplant

D. Human Heart Transplant

All the multiple choices listed above happened in different years other than 1967, except for one -selection “D,” human heart transplant. By far, the biggest medical news in 1967 came on December

3, 1967, when the first human heart transplant took place! It captivated an entire world! In 1967, South African doctor, Christiaan (Chris) Barnard, successfully performed the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital, at Cape Town, South Africa. The heart recipient patient was a 53-year-old man, Lewis Washkansky. Washkansky was a dentist who received the heart of a woman, Denise Darvall, who had died in a car accident. Although Washkansky died of pneumonia 18 days after the transplant due to a weakened immune system, Dr. Christiaan Barnard considered the surgery a success because the heart was “not being stimulated by an electrical machine.”

Today, approximately 5,000 heart transplants are performed every year, worldwide, with about 2,000 of those transplants taking place in the United States. The average life expectancy after such a surgery is 9 to 10 years.

The world’s longest-surviving heart transplant patient lived 33 years after his life-saving operation.

(Note: Louis Washkansky was the first human-to-human heart transplant recipient in 1967, however, he was actually the second human to receive a heart transplant: On January 24, 1964, Boyd Rush received a chimpanzee’s heart, although the patient in this case only survived an hour and did not regain consciousness.)

WHAT YEAR DID NEIL ARM-

STRONG BECOME THE FIRST MAN TO WALK ON THE MOON?

A. 1966

B. 1967

C. 1968

D. 1969

The correct answer is “D” 1969. At precisely 10:56 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time), on July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong prepares to become the first human being to place a footprint on the surface of the moon. With more than a billion people watching from planet Earth on their televisions, he climbs down the ladder and proclaims to the world: “That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Just weeks short of his 39th birthday, a 38-year-old Neil Armstrong is soon joined by his Apollo 11 companion, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin who says of the lunar surface: “Magnificent desolation.” They explore the moon’s surface for 2 hours, leaving behind our American flag, a patch honoring the fallen Apollo 1 crew, and a plaque that reads: “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.”

Neil Alden Armstrong died August 25, 2012, at the age of 82.

THE FIRST TELEVISED PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE WAS IN WHAT YEAR?

A. 1960 B. 1961

C. 1962 D. 1963

The first televised presidential debate occurred in 1960 between candidates John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon. So if you picked “A” you should be elected quiz master extraordinaire! On September 26, 1960, the first-ever American presidential debate transpired with a ‘live’ televised audience of over 70-million viewers out of a total U.S. population of 179 million people at the time, making it one of the mostwatched broadcasts in U. S. television history! In total, 4 televised debates took place.

According to historians, such as J.N. Druckman, “Television primes its audience to rely more on their perceptions of candidate image.” As such, the camera lens seemed “kinder” to John F. Kennedy over Nixon. With the new and unfamiliar format of television, Richard Nixon refused television makeup, not realizing that his image across America would be a very unflattering one: he appeared “ghostly,” drab and greylooking and without makeup he even appeared to have a “5 o’clock” facial shadow. All of these negative images coincided with Nixon’s suit color even blending in with the debate TVbackground. Observers point out that John F. Kennedy appeared far more photogenic and “trustworthy,” oozing youth and vibrancy for a “brighter tomorrow.”

In all my life I’ve never read anything as powerfully presented as

this week’s cover story “Top Secret Weapons of WWII” (May 15 issue of The Paper). History is all about the “telling” and I remember having history professors that put their students to sleep. Lyle, your weekly publication never ceases to amaze me! Your writer Friedrich Gomez can write about anything and bring it “alive” and “fresh” with his “turn of the phrase” and how he weaves and articulates his subject matter in a spellbinding storyline that makes me feel as if I’m actually there! My teenage son and daughter are reading it as I type this Letter to the Editor. God bless you Lyle! From Terry Galloway & family, Escondido & San Marcos.

Lyle, great job on this week’s cover story Top Secret WWII Weapons! It’s been over two months since I last wrote you, but I couldn’t holdoff on this blockbuster story by Friedrich Gomez.

As Friedrich’s story points out, “Historically, this is one of the most remarkable war stories of all time. Especially in view of the fact that these achievements were attained by ordinary civilian men and women.”

We spotted Friedrich and his girlfriend surfing off of Tamarack Beach in Carlsbad. It was crowded with a lot of families on blankets enjoying the sights, some playing frisbee when my son and daughter recognized him coming out of the surf with his ankle leash still attached to his surfboard! He and his attractive girlfriend, Kimberly, came and sat with us on our sprawling beach blanket! They both spoke highly of you, Lyle! Friedrich repeated what he said about you in the Mother’s Day Issue of The Paper (May 8 edition) that you actually served our country twice, once as a U.S. Army

soldier and once as a War Correspondent covering the Vietnam War and sometimes in a chopper and often times exposed to hostile enemy fire! Damn Lyle, you never cease to amaze me!

We’ve met Friedrich several times before, one time at Carlsbad’s Annual Oktoberfest last year, where he was recognized by several fans! Both men and girls lined up to speak with him and many took “selfie” photos with him! You must be very proud of your lad, Lyle! Shy, polite, yet animated and full of energy! Watch over him cause he’s a most beautiful spirit. We have an old Irish Gaelic saying just for you, Lyle: “Comhghairdeas i gconai” (Best Wishes Always).

“Car-shamers want everyone to buy an EV,” says Matt Deter, who works for an industrial machinery company in Rocklin, Calif.

Deter, who drives a gas-powered Porsche Cayenne, is put off by efforts to ban gas vehicles in California. He says EV technology isn’t quite ready for prime time. He’s also troubled by activists and EV drivers who call out people who continue to drive cheaper and more reliable gas cars.

It’s as if they’re trying to turn one of the great American traditions, the summer road trip, into a guilt trip. And this summer, driving vacations have never been more popular. AAA predicts a record 34.9 million drivers will be on the road this Memorial Day weekend, an increase of 3 percent from last year.

But what is car shaming, and why is it happening this summer? Also, what should you do if someone tries to car-shame you?

Will this be the summer of car shaming?

“Car shaming often comes from growing social pressure and shifting views on sustainability,” explains Carla Bevins, who teaches business management communication at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Busi-

ness. “As more people become aware of environmental issues, some feel strongly about encouraging greener choices, which can sometimes result in criticizing others’ decisions.”

Car shaming became more complicated this year as Tesla CEO Elon Musk took on a more political role. But even as Tesla fell out of favor with some drivers, the fundamentals of car-shaming remained.

No one tracks the number of car-shaming incidents systematically. But anecdotal evidence suggests there have been more flare-ups in the recent past, as environmentally-minded EV owners square off against more traditional motorists at gas stations and in parking lots. Anyone driving a large vehicle like an SUV or a specialty vehicle seems most vulnerable to being shamed.

Why is car shaming happening?

People are quick to judge, says psychology professor Thomas Plante. That’s happening more in a polarized political climate. Gas-guzzling pickup trucks are emblematic of red states; overpriced EVs are icons of blue states. (And never mind that the guy who made EVs a household word is himself, well, not a blue stater. But I digress.)

“Also, people always look for ways to justify their own behavior,” he adds. “And so if someone buys an EV, for example -- and perhaps spent

time and extra money to do so -- then they want to justify their own decision by criticizing others who made a different decision.”

What’s it like to be car-shamed?

In case it’s never happened to you, here’s what car shaming is like: Last summer, Stephanie Edenburgh was driving her Toyota Highlander in San Diego, where she runs a small publishing company. Another customer looked at her SUV and noticed the kids in back.

“Don’t you care about your kids’ future?” the customer asked.

Edenburgh said nothing.

Mushfiq Sarker drives a Honda Civic, and he also experienced car shaming.

“Last month, I posted some photos on Instagram from a road trip,” recalls Sarker, the CEO of a digital marketing agency in Dallas. “My Civic was parked by a scenic overlook, and I thought it was a fun moment to share. Shortly after, someone commented, Why are you still driving gas?”

At first, he dismissed the comment. But then he started to wonder. Are gas vehicles not good enough for summer road trips?

“I think car shaming is becoming more common because EVs are seen as a moral choice, not just a practical one,” Edenburgh told me. “With the rise in EV sales and their increasing affordability, there’s a growing expectation that everyone should switch to one. However, this mindset can ignore the fact that many families, like mine, need larger vehicles or can’t yet afford an EV.”

How to Handle a Car Shamer

Car shamers come in several varieties. Let’s start with the easy ones. If you see someone trying to deflate your tires or spray paint your car, call the police.

But if someone confronts you about driving a gas-powered vehicle, here’s what you can do:

be gracious: Many car-shamers feel they’re performing a valuable public service by calling out polluters. Unfortunately, they fail to take into account the personal circumstances of the person driving a gas-powered vehicle. (Mostly, EVs are more expensive and often impractical because of range limitations and lack of charging infrastructure.) Still, it’s worth thanking them for the feedback, however misguided.

Credits. At a time when working families are struggling, Newsom is doubling down on giveaways to Hollywood — including $200 million per year in ongoing tax credits.

$25 million for deportation defense and $14.4 Million for Lawsuits against the federal government. Rather than prioritize public safety, the governor is spending millions on legal services for undocumented individuals and partisan litigation against Washington.

Meanwhile Here’s What He’s Cutting:

No funding for Prop 36 mental Health and drug Treatment Programs. Prop 36 offers treatment instead of prison for non-violent drug offenders, a proven solution that saves money and lives. Yet Newsom’s budget completely defunds it.

No New Wildfire Prevention funds. Despite growing wildfire threats, there’s no new funding for year-round CalFire staffing, and even capital projects to help fireimpacted schools are being slashed.

Prison Cuts with No Transparency. The governor proposes to close yet another prison but won’t say which one. At the same time, he’s spending money on a new “educational facility” at San Quentin and $5 million for COVID-19 activities in prisons, while neglecting programs like Medication-Assisted Treatment for inmates struggling with addiction.

Car Shaming from page 8

Deflect the criticism: Usually, car shamers feel they have the right to wag their fingers at you because they think they’ve made a superior choice in transportation. So play along. Ask them how they get around. What’s it like to drive an EV? Chances are, they’ll want to tell you, and you can avoid an argument.

Don’t get into a fight: Plante, who teaches psychology at Santa Clara University, says there’s no need to escalate a confrontation by defending your choice to drive a gas-powered car. “Instead, respond with respect and compassion,” he says. That means thanking them for the feedback -- and then driving away.

I’ll Switch When I’m good and ready

I know what you’re thinking: What about you, wiseguy? Do you drive an EV?

Actually, no. As a travel journalist

The bottom Line

This is a budget built on broken priorities:

• It protects powerful special interests while punishing working families.

• It fuels bureaucratic bloat while gutting programs that save lives and prevent crime.

• It promises equity but delivers chaos.

my solution: Cut the Waste, Not the services

Unlike Newsom, I’ve put forward a real plan to balance the budget without hurting working families or raising taxes. My proposal:

• Stops the expansion of free health care to illegal immigrants.

• Cuts waste, fraud, and special-interest subsidies in state programs.

• Demands real accountability for every taxpayer dollar spent.

But the Democrat supermajority won’t even give it a hearing because it exposes the corruption and mismanagement they depend on to stay in power.

I won’t stop fighting. You deserve the truth, transparency, and a state government that actually works for you.

who is on the road almost constantly, I don’t even own a car. I take whatever transportation is available at the time, whether it’s a tuktuk in Siem Reap or a gondola in Venice.

I love road trips, and when I go on them, I rent the best car for the drive. And until now, that’s always been one with an internal combustion engine. I’d like to see that change, and I think we’re near an inflection point where it could change. And maybe, where it should change.

But deflating my tires and defacing my car won’t speed up the change -- nor will shaming me.

Analysts find it intriguing how the new medium of television ushered in a new paradigm of thinking and “packaging” and “selling” of a presidential candidate to the general populace. Political pundits point out the power of television vs radio; radio debates occur where images cannot be seen by the eye, as TV demands. As historians point out: “If you were watching television on the night of September 26, 1960, you probably thought that the young Senator, John F. Kennedy, had won that night’s presidential debate. Yet, if you only heard the event on radio, then Vice President Richard M. Nixon was the clear winner.”

However one puts a spin on it, the medium of television would usher in a new powerful tool through which America could glimpse images, facial emotions and, perhaps, see a last-minute change in their political vote.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: I wish to thank Graceland and Billboard Records for Elvis Presley fact-checking resources, as well as various university history departments for their eager assistance

and encouragement in writing this subject matter on American culture.

SUMMATION: I sincerely hope you enjoyed our journey back to the 1950s and 1960s, if only for a brief time. Obviously, we could not cover all the highlights (or “lowlights”) due to space limitations, but perhaps this article can encourage you to start your own journey via personal research, history books, library videos, etc. Until then, God bless you all, each and every one of you!

The Pastor says . . . memories

Have you ever wondered what your life would be without memories? There would only be now. Is there enough time to capture now? Think of all the experiences you are having right now. How much effort does it take to capture all you are seeing, hearing, and even thinking? In a moment, it will all be gone, lost forever, unless you can immortalize it in print or film. And then it all becomes that moment in the now for you to see and witness it in an experience.

However, life isn’t that way because we have memory, an opportunity to reflect on what once was, whether good or bad. One of God’s gifts has been actualized in Bing Crosby’s song, “Beautiful Memories “. In fact, we spend much of our time remembering what we have seen, heard, thought, dreamt, and done. I suppose one could say that most of our nows are only memories. Often, when people call me, they ask “what I am doing?” In all honesty, most of the time, I am thinking about the past filled with memories, or I am thinking about the future and what I will be doing, and creating new memories. Reflecting this way might not always be the most productive, but it is a good time to examine one’s life use.

Recently, I had a fruitful time to remember. A few weeks ago, during Tulip Time, a festival recognizing the Dutch settlement in the area, I attended a conference in Holland, Michigan. Visiting there brought back memories of my seven years of Tulip Times during my education in preparation for ministry, and when I met the woman who became my wife. It included opportunities to make lifetime friendships and the privilege of an education that opened the doors to a lifetime of unbelievable experiences. Being back in Holland was a blessing of memories.

fiona

Sweet little Fiona is still learning how big and exciting the world can be. At just 4 months old, she tends to be very cautious in new situations and takes time to feel safe around new people and animals. With patience, love and gentle encouragement, Fiona has so much potential to grow into a loyal and loving companion! She may do well in a calm home where she can go at her own pace. If there’s another dog in the home, she’d prefer a canine companion who is polite, predictable and respectful of her space. A stable adult dog could be a great role model for her. Because Fiona is still working on building her confidence, we recommend any kids in her new home should be old enough (10+) to understand and respect Fiona’s need for gentle, consent-based interactions. With some time to adjust, encouragement and lots of love, you’ll see this incredible dog blossom! Fiona (948256) is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3500 Burnet Dr. If you have questions about the adoption process, you can visit sdhumane.org/ adopt or call 619-299-7012. 1965 was the year everything came together. My hitch in the Marine Corps was behind me, I was in my senior year of college, Belden Corp had hired me as an engineer and that cute little timekeeper in the wire mill agreed to be my “wife for life”. Over the next thirty years our careers with Belden, Westinghouse, NCR and United Telecom crisscrossed North America. With our growing family in tow we moved from Indiana to South Florida, Minnesota, Canada, San Francisco and finally Southern California. In 1995 we partnered with “Hank the Bank Limoge,” Chairman of Vision Technologies, and opened The Computer Factory in San Marcos. We bought Hank’s interests in 1996 and we’ve been here ever since.

When IBM introduced the PC (Personal Computer) in late 1981 fewer than 4% of American homes had a computer. When we opened The Computer Factory in 1995, half of American homes had a PC and most were connected to the Internet by a “dial up” interface. Internet usage was largely limited to E-mail and bulletin boards. Home PCs were essentially stand-alone computers using applications stored on thier hard drive.

In 2001 broad-band, high speed Internet access was combined with

AI (artificial intelligence) creating the IW (intelligent web). PCs slowly changed from stand alone computers to Internet terminals. As PCs ceded their computer functions to lightning fast Internet servers, they no longer required increased speeds. PCs reqired only enough CPU speed, memory and storage to accommodate the Internet and communication. Powerful IW computers did all the “heavy lifting”. The arrival of the IW was a game changer. In adition to being a source of information and communication, the IWs powerful servers accessed the linked knowledge base of the Internet and provided unlimited storage capability. By 2025 over 95% of homes were connected to the IW.

Over the last 25 years we have watched the PC slowly yield its

“Hi Tech” superstar status to the IW.

The IW may have edged out the PC as the latest technology “superstar” but the PC still plays an important “supporting role”. Windows PCs (desktop, laptop, All-in-One and micro) are key IW connection devices and peripheral controllers in most American homes and small businesses today.

New AI applications and IW access devices are constantly being added. The future will bring unimagined advances and we have barely entered the “Intelligent Web Age”.

Next week in part II of this III part series we’ll talk about who our customers are and what they need to stay “connected”.

A couple weeks ago a lady walked slowly across the newsroom. She stopped ten feet away and said, “I want to meet that dog, but I’m scared, and I don’t know what to do.”

We gave her “The ABC’s of Meeting a Dog.”

Google says, “It’s about under-

standing and respecting the dog’s body language to ensure a positive and safe interaction.”

• “A” stands for “Ask Permission.” This lady made sure the dog and I were okay. If the dog had special needs or concerns, this was when I could tell her.

• “B” says to “Be a Good Listener.” In this case, you listen with

your eyes. Does the dog look stressed or scared? Is it backing away? If the dog’s body language tells you not to come close, respect it’s boundaries.

• “C” reminds us to “Choose a Polite Approach.” This lady stopped a few feet away. The dog looked her up and down, then approached her. After a cautious sniff, the tail wagged in approval.

Don’t just bend down and put your face in the dog’s face. The lady extended her arm and let the dog sniff the back of her hand. (Ya know…fingers look a lot like hot dogs.)

After she passed the sniff test, the dog rubbed against her hand. Two minutes later it was sitting on her lap. This was her first step in overcoming her fear of dogs. And it was simple as ABC.

Can We Help?

My partner and I pulled our police

cruiser up behind a car stopped on the shoulder of the highway. We got out and asked the driver if we could help.

No, he replied, there was no trouble; he had just stopped to look at a map.

When we turned back, we noticed that his German shepherd had jumped in the open passenger-side front window of our car.

“You may think there’s no trouble,” I smiled, “but your dog obviously thinks he’s done something wrong. He’s in our patrol car.”

He laughed. “He probably thinks you’ve come to take him to work,” he replied. “He’s a retired police dog.”

I couldn’t hear you so I’ll just laugh and hope it wasn’t a question.

I can’t believe how old people my age are.

What’s Wrong With

Me?

“Doctor!” said the woman as she loudly bounced into the room, “I want you to tell me very frankly what’s wrong with me.”

He surveyed her from head to foot. “Madam,” he said at length, “I’ve just three things to tell you.”

“First, you need to lose at least twenty pounds. Second, you should use about half as much rouge and lipstick. And third, I’m an artistthe doctor’s office is on the next floor.”

keeping Your Checked Luggage safe When You fly This summer

Eamonn Turley lost his laptop charger and designer sunglasses on a recent flight from Dublin to New York.

He’d carefully packed them in his checked luggage, assuming his airline would take care of them. But when he unpacked his bags in New York, they were gone -- for good.

“Even after immediately filing a claim, I never got these items back,” he recalls.

The experience made him think of better ways to keep his checked luggage safe. It’s a worthwhile exercise for anyone about to embark on a summer trip.

Last year, 10 million checked bags were delayed, mislaid, misdirected, pilfered or stolen, according to the multinational IT company SITA.

“Losing luggage while traveling is one of those unpleasant situations most people would rather avoid,” says Alonso Marly, travel agent at Skylux Travel. “Whether you are traveling for work or going on a well-deserved vacation, being separated from your personal belongings can be a devastating experience.”

And if you ask experts, it’s a growing problem. The evidence is more than anecdotal. The problem is getting worse because security at airports is lax.

“Anyone can steal,” says Robert Siciliano, CEO of ProtectNowLLC.com. “Even a frequent business traveler who has a klepto personality can grab an extra bag every time they deplane and have a good excuse -- “Sorry, my bad!”

-- if they are caught.”

before you leave, do this:

Before we get to some of the new strategies travelers are using to keep their checked luggage safe, let’s go over the things you absolutely have to do before you leave home:

Don’t pack any excluded items. Remember, most airline contracts of carriage -- the legal agreements between you and the airline -- specifically exclude responsibility for valuables such as electronics and jewelry. Never pack them in your checked bag.

Take a picture of your bag. Take a photo of the exterior and interior of your bag with all of your things in it. You may need it later to determine if something has gone missing. Save the images in the cloud in case you lose your phone.

At the airport, take a snapshot or video of your bag with the airlineissued tag showing the destination airport. Although airlines track your luggage, you will want to have a photo of your bag with the baggage tag before you surrender it to the airline. IT problems can happen. You’ll have the barcode for your own records just in case.

These simple precautionary measures will ensure your checked luggage stays safe before you board your flight.

But there’s more.

don’t pack any valuables.

Yep, starting to sound like a broken record here, but it’s worth repeating.

“Never pack anything valuable in your checked luggage when flying,” says veteran traveler Dana Kampman, who edits a parenting blog. “Checked bags go through so many hands and screening processes, and there’s always a chance for things to get misplaced or stolen. I’ve heard way too many horror stories over the years to take that risk.”

Remember, airlines specifically exclude most items from liability. Even if you file a claim, you’ll never see a penny in compensation for excluded items.

Buy new theft-deterrent luggage.

The latest baggage features built-in security mechanisms like tamperproof zippers, or hard-shell cases with clasps to protect your belongings. While these won’t stop a determined thief, they are a powerful deterrent.

“I have replaced my own zipper closure suitcases with mechanical clasps,” says Frank Harrison, regional security director for the Americas at World Travel Protection.

Harrison notes that thieves can easily and quickly penetrate luggage zippers with a simple pen, allowing them to quickly access and pilfer high-value items.

“Then they pull the zipper back across to close the baggage, leaving no trace of theft until you arrive at your destination,” he says.

Track your bag.

One of the strategies that Turley developed was tracking his bag. But he has a special technique. He has

a luggage tag that notes the bag is being tracked. “Through personal testing, I found that bags with tracking devices are handled more carefully by baggage handlers who may notice the tracking notification,” says Turley, the CEO of an RV rental company.

It’s true that less-than-honest baggage handlers will avoid tracked bags because they’re afraid they could bring evidence home. So a notification acts as a deterrent. (It’s also a good idea to track your bag with multiple trackers just in case one of them stops working.)

I always advise travelers to follow three tried-and-tested security methods: using TSA-approved locks on all zippers, photographing bag contents before check-in, and placing one or, even better, two GPS tracking devices like an AirTag inside the luggage.

don’t make it easy.

Interestingly, as the pilferage problem has increased, travelers have developed new strategies to thwart airport thieves.

“I wrap valuables in clothing and place them in the middle of my suitcase,” says Kevin Mercier, a frequent traveler who works for an auto manufacturer in Paris. “It makes them less accessible.”

Does it work? So far it has, he says. All of his checked luggage has been returned with its contents intact.

don’t check your bag.

This may sound incredibly obvious, but let’s get real. You still have to get your stuff from point “A” to point “B.” Veteran business traveler Andy Abramson says there’s an alternative to playing luggage roulette.

“Think about using services like Luggage Forward, which picks up at your location and delivers it to where you’re going. Or LugLess, where you take it to a UPS or FedEx location, and the bag is delivered to your destination,” says Abramson, a communications consultant from Las Vegas.

Granted, these services are considerably pricier than checking your bag at the airport. But your luggage probably won’t get pilfered, and the odds of it getting lost are far lower than if you gave it to your airline.

Always report the pilfered luggage immediately.

If you’ve already had your luggage pilfered, tell your airline right away. Airlines may be able to recover your items, but you only have a limited time to file your complaint.

“Report it immediately to the airline or local authority and obtain a filed report,” advises Wendy Stahl, a product director at AXA Partners US.

That’s also important because your credit card or travel insurance company must see the report if you want to file a claim. Many travel insurance plans include a baggage and personal effects benefit that allows you to claim compensation for your lost or stolen items, notes Stahl.

don’t be a victim this summer.

To keep your checked luggage safe this summer, keep these new strategies in mind. Remember to pack valuables in your carry-on. Use TSA-approved locks on zippers. Photograph your bag and its contents. And consider using a GPS tracking device like an AirTag. Or just outsource your luggage to a forwarding service

Bottom line: Don’t make it easy for thieves when you fly. And report pilfered luggage immediately to the airline and local authority. By taking preventative measures, you can protect your belongings and avoid the hassle of lost or stolen luggage.

chain gun, a type of cannon. Probably has something to do with the size of the cartridge. About every 5th or 6th cartridge was a tracer round (which means it lights up as it speeds toward its target). The C45 Spooky does not use hight intensity spotlights. . .it drops white phosphorus illumination rounds by parachute. They light up the target area as though it were mid day.

On this particular mission we were supporting a Special Forces Camp that had come under fire by NVA (North Vietnamese Army) troops. They were located in a powder keg area that was used by both NVA and Viet Cong units. It was in a pass. . .(again, the name escapes me [we’re talking 27 years ago]. . .I want to say An Loh. . . . . .maybe it will come to me). . .our job was to circle above, drop the WP illumination rounds and provide suppression fire. The pilot places the C47 in a constant circle to the left; he has an electronic gunsight affixed to his helmet that is configured to his eye. As he looks down at the ground and sees the target he wants he pushes the fire button and the cannon goes off, directing the rounds right to where the crosshairs point on his electronic gunsight.

It is a horrific sound, this Gatling Gun. One has to understand that the sound of the shells being discharged is like one continuous

from slavery with the celebration of Passover annually. When they became discouraged in exile, the Psalmist 105 talks about the many times God cared for them. They were to remember these events as proof that God had not rejected them and still cared.

Even God has a memory. Often, however, we see that memory as a threat in that He remembers all of our sins and will ask us to give an account of our misdeeds on the day of judgment. I share a bright side to God’s memory with you. When we have lived a life of Faith and Service, He calls us to hear, ”Well done, you good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord.” At the last Supper, Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” Perhaps the words of Psalm 103:12 are the most comforting for us to remember: “As far as the East is from the West, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” I am thankful that God does not remember some things.

sound. . BRAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

AAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKKKKK. . .not “bang, bang, bang. . . .”, nor the traditional sound one associates with a machine gun. . .it is a constant sound, more like the sound one would hear in a giant factory with giant machines going full speed and at full pitch. The BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKK is then amplified within the metal tube that is flying around in the sky. This metal tube is our airplane. All aboard have ear sound suppressors on. They help somewhat. . .but the noise is still unimaginable.

The second phenomenon is that the tracer rounds (every 5th or 6th shell), because of the rapid delivery of ordnance, appear as though the line of fire is one continuous yellow Dixon #2 pencil that is linked from the plane to the ground.

The Yellow Dixon Pencil, the incessant noise, the constant circling, the bumps (for it was a turbulent air evening which makes for bumpy plane rides), the acrid smell of burning cordite, the fumes from the exploding illuminating rounds, the several hours of flying I had experienced in the afternoon. . . all began to tell on me. I began to feel nauseated. I fought the nausea as I was in the midst of way too much adventure and excitement to be bothered with getting airsick. I flat didn’t have the time! I breathed deeply, put my head between my knees for a few minutes, regained

my composure and I snapped out of it.

We ceased firing for a time but continued to circle. We stopped firing because the air controllers had advised us that a fighter strike was heading into the target area to drop CBU’s (Cluster Bomb Units – these are bombs that explode 50 to 100 feet above ground and spray hundreds, possibly thousands, of tiny bomblets over a wide area. It is a very effective anti-personnel device).

We continued to circle and observed the ground action. We could clearly see the Special Forces camp that was under attack; we could clearly see the incoming and outgoing fire, small arms, machine gun, mortar.

Then came the CBU’s. We could not see the fighters below us that were delivering the CBU’s but we could see their ordnance.

One purple/orange/white puff after another, four, five, six in a row. Then another series. Then another. It is the most spectacular fireworks show I have ever seen.

It is hard for people who have not been in combat, or who have not witnessed combat, to understand what I am about to say.

There is a certain beauty to war.

Yes, I know, it sounds like blasphemy. It sounds bloodthirsty. It

is not drawing room conversation. It may not be in good taste. But, dammit, it is true.

Ask any combat veteran and he may tell you the same. I say “may” because most combat veterans know it is a touchy thing to say and they may not wish to engage in debate; but amongst themselves, they know. They have seen it and they know.

Sure, you know that people are being killed down below. You know that bodies are being mangled, bones broken, skin burned, lives ruined forever. I am not saying that death is beautiful; or suffering.

I am saying the color, the majesty, the adventure, the panoply of excitement and its colors. . .the orchestration of men, materiel, aircraft, ordnance. When it all comes together. . .it can be beautiful.
