SPOUSAL ABUSE SETTING RECORDS

ACROSS U.S. & STILL RISING!
By Friedrich Gomez
READER PRECAUTION. Due to the nature and content of this exclusive report to THE PAPER, reader discretion is advised.
U.S. SPOUSAL & INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE (IPV) IS ACCELERATING IN RECORD LEVELS ACROSS THE U.S.
Every minute, 24 people are victims of domestic violence somewhere
within the United States.
Every day, three women are killed by an intimate partner (husband, exhusband, or boyfriend) in the U.S.
Women in the U.S. are predominantly killed by men they know, and largely by current or former intimate partners. Of all female homicides in 2018 in which the victim-to-offender relationship could be identified: 92% of female victims were killed by a man they knew, and 63% were
killed by current husbands, boyfriends, or ex-husbands.
MALE TO FEMALE VS. FEMALE TO MALE DOMESTIC SPOUSAL ABUSE.
Every year in the United States, more than 10 million men and women become victims of domestic violence, with far more women than ever before -- tragically losing their precious lives to intimate partner violence!
The link between gender and violence in the U.S. becomes even more apparent when looking at the demographics of male homicides: Men are significantly more likely to be killed by a (stranger) than by women; strangers kill 29% of male homicides victims.
And while it is true that some men are killed by their female partners, intimate partner violence accounts for only about 5% of male homicides – and too often, these occur

Anj was an active 14-year-olde girl when her boyfriend started abusing her. After she ended the relationship he assaulted her so badly she suffered a brain injury and was left in a coma. With strength and determination, Anj is gaining new skills and has plans for the future.
AMERICAN JOURNAL OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE: “Spousal violence & death among women setting historic records within the U.S.”
According to the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, spousal abuse and intimate partner violence (IPV) in America is recognised as a persistent, widespread, and growing problem, often described by experts as a “shadow pandemic” or a “silent epidemic” because it often remains unreported by the victims.
And whenever it is, in fact, report-

ed by medical researchers as reaching record-setting levels within the U.S. – this “silent epidemic” still seems to be hugely ignored and vastly unreported by the news media today.
This silence must stop, and these victims – past to present – must be given a “voice” that has long been denied them.
For far too long, spousal and intimate partner violence has remained “America’s Shameful Secret.”
No more.
With THE PAPER having vast subscribers from California to Florida, as well as an online readership that reaches across the Pond to our European cousins, this ugly scourge will no longer be unknown nor “faceless.”
Spousal and intimate partner violence in the U.S. has now reached a national crisis point and has already far surpassed nationwide records of past physical and emotional abuse!
Violence against women increased to record levels, not only in the U.S., but around the world following lockdowns to control the
spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Today, in 2026, within the United States, the “American Journal of Emergency Medicine” has already officially reported the following statistics in the hopes of spreading wider public awareness.
“Alarming trends in U.S. domestic violence, along with the National Domestic Violence Hotline receiving more than 74,000 calls, chats, and texts just in the month of February (last month), which was the highest monthly contact volume in all of its 25-year history.”
“BEC’S TRUE LIFE STORY.”
Bec’s partner isolated her until she felt worthless and alone. After enduring years of emotional and physical abuse, Bec made the courageous decision to reach out for support and leave the relationship for good. Oftentimes, victims are brainwashed and made to feel guilty and at fault for what was happening to them.
WHAT IS SPOUSAL OR INTIMATIVE PARTNER ABUSE?
Spousal or intimate partner abuse is a pattern of coercive behaviour used to gain power and control,
encompassing physical violence (hitting, choking), sexual coercion, emotional manipulation (gaslighting, isolation), financial control, and technological stalking. It affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men, often including threats to harm children or pets, destroying property, and humiliating the partner.
PHYSICAL ABUSE
Hitting, slapping, punching, kicking, or biting.
Strangulation or choking.
Pushing, grabbing, hair-pulling, or restraining.
Using weapons or throwing objects.
Preventing a partner from sleeping or eating.
SEXUAL ABUSE
Forcing, coercing, or threatening a partner to engage in unwanted sexual acts.
Rape or sexual assault, including marital rape.

In Ireland, you go to someone’s house, and she asks you if you want a cup of tea. You say no, thank you, you’re really just fine. She asks
if you’re sure. You say of course you’re sure, really, you don’t need a thing. Except they pronounce it ting. You don’t need a ting. Well, she says then, I was going to get myself some anyway, so it would be no trouble. Ah, you say, well, if you were going to get yourself some, I wouldn’t mind a spot of tea, at that, so long as it’s no trouble and I can give you a hand in the kitchen. Then you go through the whole thing all over again until you both end up in the kitchen drinking tea and chatting. In America, someone asks you if you want a cup of tea, you say no, and then you don’t get any damned tea.

SPOUSAL ABUSE & INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE (IPV)
Spousal Abuse and Intimate Partner Violence occurs in all segments of society and across race, gender, socio-economic status, education, and sexual orientation. According to the United Nations, approximately 51,100 women were killed worldwide by an abusive spouse or intimate partner in 2023. It is not only an accelerating problem across the United States, but worldwide.
ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOTLINE.
Nearly half of college women (43%) who are dating, report experiencing violent & abusive dating behaviour, including physical, sexual, digital, verbal, or other controlling abuse.
Approximately one in three college women (29%) say they have experienced an abusive dating relationship.
52 percent of college women report (knowing a friend) who has experienced violent and abusive dating behaviours, such as physical, sexual, digital, verbal, or other controlling abuse.
“SALLIE’S TRUE LIFE STORY”
Despite once being in love, Sallie made a choice to end an abusive relationship and started doing things to take care of herself and reclaim the person she once was. For the longest time she blamed herself for being the source of her partner’s problems. She still has low self-esteem which her circle of friends and family are now helping her reclaim her former self, independence, and empowerment.
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), the following factors can increase a person’s chances of becoming an abuser:
Low income.
Low academic achievement. Young age.
Aggressive behaviour as a youth. Heavy alcohol and drug use. Depression.

Alex’s partner would abuse her for hours but always apologised afterwards. Alex would cry for hours, constantly blaming herself for all the physical and emotional abuse she suffered. PREVENTION: WARNING SIGNS & “RED FLAGS.”
An abuser may not be physically violent until much later in the relationship. This is why it is important to understand early signs of unhealthy relationships and to pay attention to HOW someone reacts to you when the situation isn’t going as planned for them – how they speak to you when they are angry or frustrated with you.
Are they complimenting you in a back-handed way or making passive-aggressive comments or insults?
Does their behaviour change when you are alone or in public?
The beginning of a relationship is when both people are displaying the best versions of themselves. Therefore, if someone cuts off a driver or behaves impatiently and rudely with a waitress on your third date, and that makes you worried or uncomfortable, it means something;
never figure out the logic of why men wore them or were expected to. What useful purpose did they serve? To keep soup from spilling on your shirt? To keep the top of your shirt reasonably closed at the top? Decorative? (I’ve seen some UGLY ties).
So it was a relief to me to stow all my ties in a drawer, never to be tied again. I think I still have them somewhere, if the moths have not had their way with them. I may donate them to Salvation Army. I have no further use for them.
Then, in 1987 or thereabouts, I won a concession contract from the city of Escondido to operate Dixon Lake’s boat dock, bait shop, food and drink, campsite and picnic reservations desk . . . and I chose to dress in tennis shorts, sport shirt, and Birkenstock sandals. For the next 27 years. Hey! I was in the leisure business . . . so I could dress . . . leisurely. I have seldom changed my wardrobe since.
On rare occasions I wear long pants. And shoes. And socks. Whenever I do, it draws comment . . . “who the hell is that?!” Looks like someone I know but .. . wait! Is that lyle?!”
Even during chilly weather I only alter my wardrobe a bit. I may add a windbreaker type jacket. No long pants. No shoes. It’s just not me.
trust that feeling. If you are afraid, it is for a reason – because something about this person doesn’t feel right. While it may seem harsh to get out of a relationship because of something like that, the best time to leave is early on, before you are entangled in the relationship and the behaviour escalates. Remember, you are never under any obligation to stay with someone you are dating. Nobody owns you.
“REBECCA’S
STORY”
Rebecca’s partner isolated her from family and friends; threatened her with weapons and continued to stalk her even after the relationship had ended. Notifying the proper authorities, Rebecca is now free and has regained her family and friends back into her life. She has never been happier! Rebecca decided to come forth with her story to promote wider public awareness and let other victims know they are not alone and they can follow in her footsteps. Today, Rebecca continues to channel her energy in a positive way and advocate for change.
WHAT IS “BATTERED WOMAN SYNDRDOME” (BWS)?
Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) is a psychological condition, often considered a sub-type of PTSD
Many a time I have slogged into my Hidden Valley Kiwanis meeting on a morning that has experienced a heavy rainstorm. And there I am. Shorts, polo shirt, windbreaker, and Birkenstocks (though the Birkenstocks tend to be soggy and make sounds like “clomp, squish, clomp, squish . .” until they dry out. A week or two later).
I’m about at the stage where I just may buy myself a whole new wardrobe . . . including long pants, sports shirts, maybe a sport coat or two, socks and shoes. But no ties. I have made a solemn and sacred vow to never wear a neck tie again.
My biggest concern is . . . shoes.
I have five pair of brand new shoes, four of which have never been worn for more than 30 minutes, and always on carpeted floors so as not to scuff the soles in case I want to return them.
My feet, having become accustomed to the comfort of Birkenstocks . . . have, I think, managed to spread out a bit and they resist the ‘tightness’ of normal shoes. My feet are uncomfortable in them. It’s even uncomfortable putting socks on. (As you get older it’s more difficult to bring your feet up high enough to comfortably put new socks on . . . and it’s uncomfortable bending down to reach your

upraised foot . . . and then, once you’ve accomplished this difficult task, there’s the other foot. And then the shoes. You’re supposed to put them on as well. Even with a shoe horn, sometimes not all that easy. Much easier to simply slide into some comfortable Birkenstock sandals. You know, the same kind the baby Jesus wore. (Well, when He was an adult . . .)
If I do decide to buy a whole new wardrobe I wonder if my family and friends will recognize me?
“That really distinguished looking guy over there ... the one with the silver hair (silver being a much more preferable adjective than “gray”) and so well dressed! .. . long pants, sport coat, looking trim . . sophisticated. Look! He doesn’t have shoes! He’s wearing sandals. It must be . . .. yes, it is! It’s our old pal, lyle!”
At least I’m thinking about a new wardrobe.
We shall see. And so, perhaps, shall you.

MOTHER SHOT DEAD IN NEW YORK.
Last summer, New Yorkers were rattled by the devastating, senseless murder of Azsia Johnson – a 20-year-olde victim of domestic violence who was shot dead while walking her three-month- olde baby on the Upper East Side.
Contrary to initial speculation, this was not a random killing – a few days after the shooting, the child’s father was arrested and charged
with Azsia’s murder. According to Azsia’s mother, Azsia’s ex-boyfriend physically abused her while she was pregnant with her child and continued to stalk and threaten her for months. Though shocking and infuriating, Johnson’s case is sadly just one of many instances of a fatal Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) against women.
IS THERE SPOUSAL ABUSE & DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WITHIN CHURCH CONGREGATIONS ACROSS THE U.S.?
Yes, and many Christian leaders and denominations address “spousal abuse” by condemning it as a sin and a violation of marriage vows, and while urging churches to provide safety, support, and accountability for victims of spousal abuse violence.
To their great credit, Christian publications, such as Christianity Today (founded by the late Billy
Graham), and Premier Christianity regularly discuss spousal abuse within the church, aiming to shatter the “silent epidemic” and encourage better pastoral care. Such articles within these powerful and widely-read and influential Christian publications often highlight such issues to their nationwide (and global) readership that the Church and its congregations are not immune to domestic violence and the various forms of spousal abuse.
Many other Christian publications (around the globe) have concurred with the indisputable criminal statistics compiled by replicated law enforcement databases that: “Spousal abuse and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) occurs at similar rates in Christian homes as in the secular world.”
Such pastoral responsibility is predicated on their Christian ethos that it is better to openly face and
combat such negative issues, rather than to abandon their vulnerable flock by ignoring – and thus allowing – such ‘spiritual destruction’ to insidiously fester within their congregations.
Premier Christianity publication has specifically highlighted that 1 in 4 Christians have experienced domestic abuse, calling for a “better theology” for handling it, according to a Facebook post by Premier Christianity magazine which went viral over the internet.
And Christianity Today publication enumerates the following Key Themes in its coverage:
1. CHALLENGING THE SILENCE: Articles frequently expose the “holy hush” and urge church leaders to stop treating
Your credit card isn’t as safe as you think when you travel.
Eric Finkel thought he’d dodged a bullet on a recent visit to Vietnam. His hotel “accidentally” charged his credit card $1,500 instead of the correct amount of $66. The staff immediately cancelled the erroneous charge right in front of him.
Problem solved, right? Wrong.
Months later, Finkel discovered the hotel had quietly resubmitted the fraudulent $1,500 charge without the cancellation slip. What followed was a lengthy ordeal with his credit card company that was only resolved because Finkel had kept his paper receipts. Without that documentation, his credit card company told him he’d be stuck paying for the scam.
“I can’t imagine how many travelers have been defrauded using this technique,” says Finkel, an executive based in Vancouver, Canada.
I can. I handle credit card fraud cases almost daily as a consumer advocate. And I can tell you, travelers are constantly in the crosshairs. Credit card fraud cases were on track to double last year, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Global losses hit $32 billion the previous year.
Credit cards have become the default safety net for travelers — convenient, widely accepted, with fraud protection that feels foolproof. But those protections aren’t perfect. From sophisticated skimming operations to “accidental” overcharges, your plastic can be compromised in ways you might not expect. The question isn’t whether you’ll encounter credit card problems while traveling. It’s whether

you’re prepared to prevent them or fix them when they happen.
The old Credit Card fraud Tricks still Work
Some types of fraud never go out of style. The bad guys just find new venues. ATMs remain one of the most persistent threats for credit cards, especially for those going abroad.
Vlad Polyanskiy, chief marketing officer at FlightRefunder, saw it himself when a client’s card was skimmed at an ATM in Prague. “Four transactions for small amounts appeared on his account,” Polyanskiy says. “He found out thanks to SMS notifications.”
The client immediately blocked the card and contacted his bank. His bank returned the money two weeks later, but those were two weeks of uncertainty during what should have been a relaxing vaca-
tion.
The sophistication of skimming operations has evolved dramatically. Modern skimmers can be nearly invisible, often placed over legitimate card readers at ATMs, gas stations, and even restaurant payment terminals. Some use Bluetooth technology to wirelessly transmit stolen data to criminals lurking nearby.
These small test charges are a telltale sign of card skimming. Criminals use them to verify that stolen card data works before attempting larger purchases. By the time you notice a $2 charge from halfway around the world, your card details might already be for sale on the dark web.
Steve Payerle, president of Next Level Technologies, a cybersecurity firm, has tracked fraud patterns for over a decade.
“Credit card fraud spikes 40 per-
cent during peak travel seasons,” he says. “The biggest mistake travelers make is using the same card for everything — creating a single point of failure.”
When businesses make “mistakes”
Not all credit card problems come from criminals. Sometimes, the businesses you’re trying to support are the problem.
Finkel’s Vietnam hotel incident illustrates a particularly insidious form of fraud that exploits the trust between travelers and legitimate businesses. The hotel had made an innocent-looking exchange rate error, confusing dollars for Vietnamese dong. The staff then created a paper trail that looked legitimate — they even performed the “cancellation” in front of witnesses. But months later, when memories fade and receipts get lost, they resubmit the original charge without the corresponding cancellation.
The burden of proof in credit card disputes often falls heavily on cardholders, especially for international transactions. Credit card companies have limited ability to investigate claims in foreign countries, and they often rely on merchant statements and documentation to resolve disputes.

Nine out of ten families in San Diego County cannot afford

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 State of North County. Whether you drove in from Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Fallbrook, Valley Center, or any of our incredible communities in between — your presence made the night.
The theme of the evening was sim-
ple: government’s job is to provide you with the tools, infrastructure, and institutions you need to use your God-given talents to succeed in life. The best measure of good government is whether the people are achieving their dreams and goals.
Here’s a look at what we covered:
Housing: North County is leading the way on real housing solutions. We’re pushing a first-time homebuyer pilot program and taking on the red tape and government costs that have pushed the median home price to nearly $1 million.
Public Safety: Our communities are safer because of the men and women who show up every day. We recognized the work of our fire departments, law enforcement, and the One Safe Place domestic violence center, which has helped reduce repeat victimization by 44%.
Behavioral Health: North County has built one of the most comprehensive mental health systems in

spring break safety Starts with All of Us

As spring break arrives for many schools in our communities, our streets and neighborhoods naturally get busier. Families are walking, kids are riding bikes and more people are out enjoying the sunshine. It’s one of the best parts of living in our community, but it also means we all share a greater responsibility to look out for one another, especially on our roadways.
E-bike safety remains a top priority for us in the City of San Marcos. E-bike riders under 12 and their parents can be fined under a new
San Marcos law, so in partnership with the school district, Sheriff’s Department and our parent community, we’re reminding everyone in our community to “ride right” for a safe San Marcos.
Here are a few key reminders from the new and existing laws:
• Riders under 12 are not allowed on e-bikes
• Riders under 18 must wear a helmet
• Passengers are only allowed if the e-bike is designed for it (most aren’t)
• Lights are required at night
• No weaving through traffic
• No riding on sidewalks
These laws are designed to keep our youngest community members safe as e-bike use continues to grow. Whether you’re driving, biking or walking, thank you for doing your part to stay safe and keep each other safe on our roads. Learn more at sanmarcosca.gov/e-bikes

Fentanyl Response: Overdose deaths are down. That didn’t happen by accident. It happened because our community fought back.
Fighting for Taxpayers: We’ve said no to gas taxes, mileage taxes, sales tax hikes, and real estate transfer fees. Your money belongs in your pocket.
San Onofre & Tijuana Sewage: We’re holding the state & federal government accountable on both. Nuclear waste needs to leave our coastline. And the sewage pouring into our ocean from Tijuana is not acceptable — we’ve been fighting it and we’re not stopping.

Lyle E. Davis because you’re still serving us and our country with a publication that serves us all. And apparently television 8 news knew that and that your writer Freidrich Gomez is greatly loved.
From Tony Logan, Valley Center.
Great piece on Charles Lindbergh! Smart and provocative! The Paper never ceases to amaze me! Thank you Lyle E. Davis for bringing The Paper into existence. Your legacy is forever secure. Also, I think you’re the only publication in all of San Diego County history that warranted CBS TV-8 news to broadcast a Special Newscast on you, The Paper, and your star writer Friedrich Gomez, and the positive impact you have had on people’s lives! Things I never knew which put tears in our eyes! Also the TV-8 Special put San Diego’s North County on the map, since the newscast was “aired” multiple times on affiliate channels as well. I know because many of our friends saw you! And plus, you have subscribers from here to the East coast, from what I’ve read. God bless you, Lyle. And also your boy, Friedrich, of whom you must be very proud of.

that didn’t exist in the era of travel agents and paper tickets. Every website, app, and digital platform that stores your card information becomes a potential entry point for criminals.
The problem isn’t just with the big, well-known booking sites. Fraudsters have become increasingly sophisticated at creating fake travel websites that look legitimate but exist solely to steal credit card information. These sites often pop up around major events or travel seasons, offering deals that seem too good to be true.
Public Wi-Fi networks at airports, hotels, and cafés present another significant threat. Rafay Baloch, CEO of cybersecurity firm REDSECLABS, warns that these networks are “essentially open highways for cybercriminals.”
“The most overlooked vulnerability is using public Wi-Fi for travel bookings,” says Payerle, who has seen countless clients fall victim to this scenario. His firm has tracked a 78 percent reduction in travel-related breaches when clients use their

abuse as a “private family matter” or a taboo subject.
2. CRITICAL OF PASTORAL RESPONSE: Christianity Today and other sources often note that pastors sometimes unintentionally harm victims by emphasising forgiveness or reconciliation without holding abusers accountable.
3. THEOLOGICAL SHIFTS: Coverage often addresses the misuse of Scripture (e.g. teaching submission or emphasising that “God hates divorce”) to force victims to remain in dangerous and abusive situations which could prove fatal to the spouse as well as any children.
4. THEOLOGICAL SUPPORT FOR VICTIMS: Many articles argue that domestic violence breaks the marriage convenant, allowing for separation and divorce, and urge that the church must prioritise the safety of victims over “saving marriages.”
5. RECOMMENDED ACTON: Publications suggest churches should train leaders, establish clear abuse policies, and partner with legal authorities, emphasising that abuse is a crime, not just a sin.
phone’s hotspot instead of public Wi-Fi for financial transactions.
The rise of mobile banking has made travelers more vulnerable in some ways. While apps offer convenience and real-time monitoring, they also mean people are more likely to check their accounts and make transactions while connected to unsecured networks.
strategies To Protect Your Credit Card When You Travel
The experts I spoke with don’t always agree on the perfect solution — banks vary wildly in their fraud response, and technology that protects you in one scenario can create vulnerabilities in another. But certain strategies consistently prove effective.
The most important advice is also the simplest: carry backup cards from different networks, and keep them separated.
Payerle, the cybersecurity expert, recommends the “three-card rule” to his cybersecurity clients: “One for hotels and flights booked in advance, one for daily expenses, and a backup that never leaves your wallet.” When one client’s pri-
mary card was skimmed at a Rome ATM, they still had clean cards to continue their trip while the bank resolved the issue.
Real-time transaction alerts were invaluable for nearly every fraud victim I spoke with. Murphy, whose card was skimmed in Prague, says establishing real-time transaction notifications “has saved me thousands.” Polyanskiy’s client caught four fraudulent transactions immediately thanks to SMS alerts.
“Enable text or app notifications for every charge so you can spot suspicious activity immediately,” recommends Raymond Yorke, a spokesman for Redpoint Travel Protection, a travel insurance company.
When it comes to ATMs, location matters more than you might think. Tapos Kumar, a U.S. finance professional, follows strict ATM rules with his clients.
“Only withdraw from machines physically located inside bank branches or airports -- never from freestanding kiosks,” he warns. “Street ATMs are the number one hotspot for skimming.”
Credit cards consistently offer
better protection than debit cards for travel purchases. “Generally, credit cards offer stronger fraud protection than debit cards, which are directly linked to your bank account,” Karon notes.
Kelly Hall, the director of global initiatives at Cedar Crest College, who works with student travelers, has a practical tip that many travelers overlook: “Always make copies of the front and back of cards before you leave home. Leave one copy with a friend or relative, and pack one copy separately from your credit card.”
Virtual credit card numbers, offered by many banks, can provide an additional layer of security for online bookings. James Wilson, a data privacy expert from Spokane, Washington recommends services like Privacy.com that let you create multiple virtual cards, with the option to set spending limits.

While the Church is fighting the Good Fight, some studies show that up to 44% of pastors rarely or never speak on the topic, which can leave spousal abuse victims in potentially life-threatening scenarios. Alone, vulnerable, and with no spiritual support. Along with subjecting their children to witness and become traumatised by observing terrifying and violent acts against their mother. Such emotional and psychological scars may damage a child’s psyche for the remainder of their life.
NOTE: Various pastors and ministers have asked me to suggest to our vast interstate readership from the West to East coast who are now reading this cover story, to Google the below link:
Reverend, Dr. Grace Goertzen “Church Members Are Not Exempt From Domestic Violence.”
I have already taken the liberty of following their advice and I found the interview of the good reverend Dr. Grace Goertzen, who has a degree in Divinity, to be a most profound and extremely insightful interview on what is occurring within the church today.
Amazingly, Rev. and Dr. Grace Goertzen is a survivor of severe Spousal Abuse!
Truly a must-read.
CONCLUSION: If this cover story inspires or helps any person to free themselves from any physically or emotionally abusive relationship, then this cover story has served its purpose.
Because even one life is sacred and invaluable.
Also, I hope I have helped in any small way to further promote public awareness on this most important topic and that readers will retain the “red flags” and “warning signs” so that they can now be empowered and know how to prevent themselves into falling into a potentially deadly situation.

solving unexpected Travel Problems

by Christopher Elliott
Even the most experienced traveler can run into trouble every now and then. But how do you get out of trouble?
I needed to think quickly when I checked in for a recent flight from Doha, Qatar, to Auckland, New Zealand. I had taken care of the visa for New Zealand, but then the ticket agent asked me for proof of an onward journey.
Huh? Well, it turns out New Zealand won’t let you into the country unless you can show that you’re not going to overstay your visa.
Unexpected problems crop up all the time when you travel -- whether it’s a car rental company that runs out of vehicles, a lost hotel reservation, a sudden illness, or a visa glitch. For example, many American travelers will get blindsided by the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), a $7 fee paid to enter the European Union, when it goes into effect at the end of this year or early next year. (Ah, if they only read my column.)
But as it turns out, there are things you can do to avoid these unexpected travel problems. In a moment, I’ll also tell you how that little paperwork problem with New Zealand ended.
To solve a Travel Problem You Have To see it Coming
I’m surprised by how many travelers don’t even bother to verify the basics before they leave. This is
one of the oldest rules in the book -- so old, perhaps, that people have forgotten it.
“You have to contact each hotel, each tour operator, your airline, and your car rental company to verify everything,” says Susan Sherren, who runs Couture Trips.
Here’s how a pro does it: Before a client leaves on a trip, she runs a double-check audit. She checks every reservation, paying special attention to anything done through an online travel agency.
“Those are fraught with problems,” she says.
That allows her to fix any problems before her customers leave home. It’s an easy trick you can use, too.
But it’s not the only trick for having a smarter trip. Here are a few more:
Print and read the rules. How can you hold a company to its rules if you don’t know what they are? Your airline has what’s called a contract of carriage, the legal agreement between you and the company. You can find it on the airline’s website. Similarly, cruise lines have ticket contracts and car rental companies have contracts. Sarah Blocksidge, a director for a marketing agency in Cleveland, always prints a copy of these rules before she leaves. “I know what I am entitled to when my flight is canceled,” she explains.
Think outside the loyalty program. Too often, travelers are prisoners of their loyalty programs. So when
app. That’s a cool hidden benefit. ask an ai for help. Artificial intelligence is developing so quickly that even I’m having a hard time keeping up, and I’m a tech enthusiast! Ross Borden, CEO of Matador Network, which operates a travel AI called GuideGeek, says onequarter of his audience already uses AI to solve their travel problems. “We see users asking questions like, ‘My flight is canceled so I have an extra night in Chicago. Is there anything cool to do or see near O’Hare Airport?’ or ‘Getting into Dublin late due to flight delay. Where’s a good place to eat at 2 a.m.?,’” he says. And AIs are getting better at answering those kinds of questions -- and solving problems -- every day.
Or you could ask me for help, because chances are, I’ve made the mistake in my travels.
How I Solved My unexpected Travel Problem
they run into a problem like a car rental agency that runs out of vehicles, they lean on the company for a fix. If that doesn’t work, try plan B, says Las Vegas-based frequent flier Andy Abramson. “I turn to local auto rental car agencies,” he says. “Many offer rentals at competitive rates when big-name companies are sold out.” True, you won’t get your points -- but you will get a car.
Never lose another reservation. Travelers have become too reliant on hotels and other companies to track their reservations. That’s a mistake, says Stephanie Webb, who works for a tour company. “I always recommend taking screenshots of your confirmation emails and booking details. If a hotel claims they don’t have your reservation, showing a record with dates and confirmation numbers can help resolve the issue faster.” Also, if they’ve lost your reservation and they’re fully booked, your paperwork will make them own the problem and find you alternate accommodations.
Look for hidden benefits. Let’s say you get sick on the road and need a doctor. Your travel insurance company can help you find an English-speaking M.D. while you’re abroad. “If your travel insurance plan includes 24/7 emergency assistance, then it’s worth giving the emergency assistance provider a call,” says Kimberly O’Donovan, vice president of operations at Travelex Insurance Services. Some travel insurance companies -- including hers -- will find a doctor and even make an appointment for you through a smartphone
In case you’re new to this column, here’s how I fit into the picture: I’m on the road 365 days a year. I don’t have a permanent home, and I haven’t for many years. And even though I wrote How to Be The World’s Smartest Traveler, it’s only because I’ve made almost every mistake in the book.
So how did I fix the onward journey problem with New Zealand? I calmly sat down on a bench at the airport and asked my son, who is also my travel companion, where he wanted to go after our two months in New Zealand ended.
“Australia,” he said without hesitation.
Fortunately, airline tickets from Christchurch to Sydney were a bargain at the time. So I booked a ticket on Qantas, showed it to the ticket agent, and checked in for my flight.
Problem solved.
Or was it? The bigger lesson here is that most unexpected travel problems shouldn’t be unexpected. You should see them coming, whether it’s a visa, a missing reservation, or a car rental company that runs out of vehicles. Don’t be like me. Plan ahead. ***

I worked with Mary a while back who was receiving default notices from her lender. She already had a reverse mortgage (she worked with another loan officer/company). She needed help contacting her lender and figuring out how she could stop foreclosure proceedings. Mary had neglected to pay an additional property tax assessment. She already had her taxes and insurance paid through the reverse mortgage. But those funds didn’t cover any new tax assessment. Mary’s lender had paid the additional tax, but now wanted their money back.
Initially, I ran the numbers to see if Mary could refinance her current
Unlocking the Power of Home Equity
mortgage into a new reverse mortgage. If we could meet the tests required for a reverse mortgage refinance, that would have been a great solution for Mary. But that didn’t work. There were no additional funds that could be realized by refinancing. Through multiple phone calls, correspondence and multiple visits to Mary’s home. I was able to work with her lender to accept smaller monthly payments to reimburse them for the taxes they had paid on Mary’s behalf. So Mary was on the path to avoid foreclosure. Unfortunately, I’ve learned that Mary’s health has declined and she is not able to remain in her home at the moment. At this point, Mary’s family will need to notify the lender if she is not able to return to her home. Additionally, they will need to inform the lender if a family member will want to retain the home and pay off the reverse mortgage with their own financing or if the home is to be sold.
More and more, I speak with members of our older community who don’t have family at all, or they are estranged from their family members and/or adult children. This always makes me sad. It also makes me want to help them as much as I

possibly can. I’ve called Adult Protective Services, approached estranged family members and much more. I’ve even scooted out the back door because an adult child wasn’t supportive of his mother getting a reverse mortgage. I can tell you that for that special lady, I did help her get massive repairs completed to her home so that she was able to live in and enjoy her home until she passed. That was exactly the result the rest of her family was hoping for, that their mom was in the home she loved until her last breath. I can laugh about the memory of leaving by the back door now, but back then, I was a little worried!
Please give me a call to review your options. Each call is a different situation, a different story and requires a different approach. I have helped in many different situations and each has their own specific solution.

Pastor Huls
The Pastor says . . . Questions Women should ask
March is International Women’s History Month. There are many speeches throughout March in support of women, including one from the First Lady. Sadly, many countries had no speeches on behalf of women. It was not too long ago that we would be hardpressed to hear a speech on behalf of women in this country. But times have changed, and there is greater recognition of the merits of women beyond the kitchen and nursery child rearing. There are many reasons for this. Perhaps the biggest is the arrogance of the male, prejudiced by his own importance.
This article aligns with the paper’s feature honoring women in March. I would like to be an advocate for the women of the Bible. It is probably a dangerous thing to do because most adherents of the Bible don’t want any challenges to their faith. I am not the devil’s advocate, but I do believe that the women of the Bible should have their day in court.
We begin with Eve, the first woman in the Bible. God created Eve to be Adam’s helpmate. Did not her husband have some responsibility to be her helpmate? Where was he when the serpent, the devil, or Satan, talked with her? Was she the weaker of the two who gave Satan room to tempt her? Where was Adam? If she were the weaker of the two, he should have been there. He missed his place with her. It was a cheap shot at God when God asked him what he had done. He placed all the blame on the woman and God. She should have asked God about this.
Not long after, there is a question about Abraham. His poor wife, Sarah, couldn’t conceive. Was it Abraham’s fault or hers? In desperation, it is suggested that she give her mistress to Abraham. No thought was given to try another man, only Hagar, Sarah’s mistress. Obviously, it was her fault. A child is born that brings happiness to Abraham but misery to Sarah. “Why am I the victim?” Sarah asked. In the same family is Isaac and his wife, Rebekah, who finally had a son blessed by God. Rebekah is happy, except that one of her twin sons prefers the local girls, and of the two boys, there is the judgment of God: ‘Jacob have I loved and Esau I have hated.’ Why? asks Rebekah, the mother. She is forced to compromise her morals by deceiving her husband to protect Jacob from his brother ’s wrath.
Time after time in the biblical stories, the question of a woman’s

The Computer factory

The age of the PC (personal computer) is nearing the end. The PC has enjoyed a great run over the past half century. Early versions of “stand alone” personal computers first showed up in the 1970s. Among the early hints at the coming PC revolution were the Kenbak #1, Altair 8800 1, Commodore 64 and the Apple 1 and 2 PCs. Experts however, mark the beginning of the “PC age” from the release of the IBM 5150 in August of 1981. Worldwide PC sales grew from under one million units in 1982, to peak at 360 million units in 2011. Then began a long slow decline in PC sales as the “stand-alone” functional assets of PCs like program storage, data processing, memory and data storage became available on network servers at much higher

Even though animal shelter workers and volunteers try not to pick favorites, it happens. Once in a while I stop my friends and coworkers and ask, “If you were going to take any of the dogs home with you tonight, who would it be?”
The answers can be surprising. A petite animal care attendant would take home the largest dog in the kennels. “I know he weighs almost as much as I do, but he’s starting to get used to living here. He needs to remember what it’s like being in a home, even if it’s just for one night.”
A strong, athletic volunteer blushes while admitting that he has a crush
speeds and lower costs. As the IW servers grew in speed, memory, power and storage, PCs joined other “network” access devices as “network terminals”. A network terminal’s basic function is to receive, display and transfer data generated by the powerful network servers.
Between 2011 and 2024, in spite of a 15% growth in population, worldwide PC unit sales fell by over 25%, a result of the ever increasing capabilities of the IW. It’s far cheaper and faster to build speed, storage and processing power into powerful Internet servers than to create the same capabilities in individual PCs. PCs join other devices as simply “internet terminals”. Powerful Internet servers have quietly replaced PC’s computing and storage functions.
The next step in upgrading the efficiency and speed of the IW will be a gradual migration from “digital” to infinitely faster “quantum” as the “language” of Internet technology. Along with telephone and broadcast networks, the internet connection has become an essential part of modern computing. The IW upgrade to “quantum “ from “digital” will require little if any effort or equipment change on the part of users but will greatly enhance the capabilities of the IW network.
While we are approaching the end of the “PC age”, we’re not quite there yet. We users still need a way to save our old files and con-
tinue to maintain IW access and personal contacts. If your PC was made after 2017, we can probably upgrade it to Windows 11 and get you back on the IW for under $150 bucks. Bring your old PC in for a free estimate. If your PC was built before 2017 and you want to stay in the game, you may need to get one of our $475-$600 Windows 11 refurbs.
The modern World’s pace of technological change can be daunting for the 40 year and older DIs (digital immigrants. For the 30 year old and younger DNs (digital natives) who grew up in with the AI (artificial intelligence) stoked IW (intelligent web), rapidly evolving technology has always been a part of their lives. To the DNs it’s sim-
ply the way the World works. DNs accept the answers and solutions provided by AI and the IW without question. If an answer or solution changes, they simply plug in the new answer and move on. By contrast the DIs established their information base by a completely different process. DIs rely upon their internal cognitive process for solutions and answers. Their solutions and answers are connected to their internal cognitive process. To change an answer or solution requires the rejection of the cognitive process that created it and the generation of a new cognitive support structure. This is a much more energy and time consuming process and the major difference between DI and DN information processing.

“We’ve always had Shepherds and Danes. But I just love this little guy.”
One of my current favorites at Rancho Coastal Humane Society is a slightly largerthan-medium-sized, mixed breed dog. You don’t have to look very hard to guess his prominent breed. He has a spotty tummy and a big, goofy grin. When he smiles, his eyes disappear into the wrinkles on his face.
Earlier today he had a “Snifari.” We call this a Snifari because it involves a whole lot of sniffing. One of the animal care attendants took him on a tour to see what’s going on outside the kennel fence, and to meet and interact with people in a neutral area.

We were sure he would do great,
and he didn’t disappoint. His tail wagged nonstop. Everyone he met was his instant, brand new, best friend. After a few weeks living
in a kennel, everything old was new again.
The last leg of his Snifari took him through the lobby of our Adoption Center. He smelled smells, met people, heard voices, and found toys in the gift shop.
Just as he was leaving, the excitement overcame him. In the time it takes to hit “Send,” he left a “P-mail” message.
It was an easy clean up for a one-time mistake. Customer Service representatives Savannah and Juliette put it into perspective. “We all have accidents.”
He’s still a perfect dog for someone. Maybe he needs someone who also has accidents, so you can live together without judgement.

country the right way. They followed the rules. They waited in line. They earned their place here.
And California’s sanctuary policies make no distinction between those families and individuals who pose a real threat to public safety.
That’s not compassion. That’s negligence. And the people paying the price are the residents and officers in communities like ours.
Mayor Bill Wells of El Cajon is taking action to correct this. Yesterday, the City of El Cajon formally challenged California Attorney General Rob Bonta to explain how the state’s sanctuary policies don’t violate federal criminal law.
Federal law makes it a felony to encourage or induce someone to reside in the United States unlawfully. California’s sanctuary laws do exactly that.
SB 54 blocks local police from working with federal immigration authorities. State law extends driver’s licenses, health care, and tuition benefits regardless of legal status. Together, these policies create a system designed to keep people in California without fear of deportation.
Meanwhile, Jim Desmond, a candidate for the District 48 Congressional Seat says, “The people who keep San Diego running can’t afford to live here. Teachers. Nurses. Deputies. Firefighters. Young couples who grew up in this community — priced out of the place they call home. When our kids can’t build a future here, we don’t just lose homeowners. We lose our workforce. We lose stability. We lose community. That’s why I’m bringing “Restoring Homeownership for San Diegans” to the Board of Supervisors — because the American Dream shouldn’t require leaving the place you love.
Our seniors built these communities. Our caregivers hold families together. Our veterans answered the call to serve. And too many of them are being left behind. Seniors priced out of their homes by skyrocketing utilities. Family caregivers stretched to the breaking point with zero help. Veterans who served their country but can’t get their skills recognized in the civilian workforce.
That’s not how we treat the people who gave the most. In Congress, I’ll fight for a caregiver tax credit, utility-rate protections for seniors on fixed incomes, expanded senior mental health care, and real workforce pipelines that turn military
service into civilian careers.
We don’t honor these people with slogans. We honor them with action.”
We need to elect Jim Desmond to Congress!
A memory from 2018 . . .
MR. DAVIS, YOU ARE HAVING A HEART ATTACK!
“Well,” I thought, “that’s not good.”
Wednesday morning I had awakened with a pain in my upper left chest. On a pain scale of 1-10, it was about a 5. I took a nitroglycerin tablet and went back to bed, sleeping in till about 10am. The pain was gone.
I had breakfast and then met Evelyn to assist in folding and mailing this week’s edition of The Paper to our subscribers.
Noticed another pain develop; this time right below the sternum (center of the chest). On a pain scale it was about 2-3. I decided it was something of a temporary nature but, to her credit, Evelyn insisted I head to Kaiser Permanente’s Urgent Care Clinic in San Marcos. Ever her obedient servant, I complied.
Three separate electrocardiograms came back negative but the doctor thought something was up and wanted to explore a bit deeper. A special blood test was run and, sure enough, they found something in the blood work that didn’t belong there. It was called “troponins.” During a heart attack dead cells resulting from the damage to the heart slough off into the blood stream. When doctors find them, they know something is going on with the ticker and it usually isn’t good.
A cardiac catheterization was ordered; I was ambulanced down to Scripps Clinic in La Jolla. My Kaiser cardiologist told me that Dr. MacTavish would be doing the procedure and he was the Chief of the Cardiac Catheterization Labthe best in the business. This gave me much comfort.
I was the number two patient on Friday morning so was in the lab at 8:15am. While waiting all Thursday, Friday morning and post-op Friday, I was given the finest medical attention by the greatest people on earth, the doctors and nurses of

Hot Weather brings out rattlers Earlier Than usual

By Donna Durckel, County of San Diego Communications Office
With a heat advisory in effect and temperatures soaring across San Diego County, there has been an increase in rattlesnake sightings throughout the region.
This sudden stretch of hot weather is creating ideal conditions for rattlesnakes to become more active. When temperatures rise, rattlesnakes come out to warm themselves, look for food, and find shady places to cool off. All this extra movement makes them easier to spot on trails and near homes, especially when the season heats up earlier than usual.
Rattlesnakes are common in San Diego, especially in rural or canyon areas and when the weather warms up. They are part of our ecosystem and play an important role in population control of small mammals such as rats and mice. Because of the part they play in local ecosystems, they are fully protected within San Diego County Parks.
Rattlesnakes are easily identifiable by their large triangular head, narrow neck, and wide body with a pronounced ridge running down the middle of their backs. Rattlesnakes are also less shiny than most other snakes in the County. Although rattlesnakes can be seen year-round in Southern California, most sightings occur from April to June.
Did you know?
• Rattlesnakes use their forked tongue to taste the smell of the air.
• They can sense both reflected visual light (like humans) and infrared light which is given off by an animal’s body heat.
What should you do if you hear or see a rattlesnake?
To prevent being bitten, the best advice is to leave the snake alone. Most bites occur when a person tries to pick up, tease or kill a snake. If you give snakes an escape route, they’ll avoid you rather than strike.
if you are bitten, it is important to remember to:
• Stay calm.
• Immobilize the bitten extremity – DO NOT apply a bandage or ice, and do not try to cut or suck out the venom.
• Wash the skin – soap and water works best, or an antiseptic wipe.
• Remove any jewelry or tight-fitting clothing, in case of swelling.
• Call for help – call 911 to get medical attention as soon as possible; if you have to find a phone, walk at a relaxed pace.
Safety is a priority at County Parks. When you use your best common sense, it is easy to stay safe around rattlesnakes whether you are on a trail, out camping, or even in your own backyard.
on Your Property
If you see a rattlesnake on your property and you live in the County’s unincorporated areas or the cities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, San Diego, Santee or Solana Beach, keep an eye on the snake from a safe distance and call County Animal Services at 619236-2341. Animal control officers can safely remove the snake and relocate it away from the public.
If you live in any other city, please contact your local animal control agency for assistance.

You will likely hear the rattle before you see the snake. A rattle is the rattlesnake’s way of warning an intruder of its presence. Pay attention to this sign and be even more aware of your surroundings by staying on the trail, where it is easiest to identify a rattlesnake.

both Kaiser Permanente, Palomar Medical Center and Scripps Catheterization Clinic.
After recovering, a Nurse Practitioner, with a great big smile on her face, advised me that she had good news. I had a blockage but it was only about 10% but, for a man my age (I’m slightly younger than Methusalah) that was a good sign. Medical staff agreed that I had NOT, in fact, had a heart attack. The signs were there but they could find no damage to the heart muscle so it meant they were gonna actually release me back into polite society.
Bottom line: You’re stuck with me awhile longer.
To my family and friends . . . daddy is back!
And to Evelyn . . . you’re the best!

To those with whom I had business appointments and was unable to keep, my apologies for the inconvenience. I shall call and reschedule.

sing for The Health of it
Try barbershop singing!
Singing in a chorus has many physical and cognitive benefits:
• You pay attention to your posture to improve your breathing.
• You strengthen muscles used in breathing, allowing you to breathe more deeply so you can support and sustain notes.
• You actively listen so that you match others in your voice part and are in harmony with other parts.
• Singing releases endorphins which make you feel good too.
• In an acappella chorus, which has no accompaniment, you memorize the notes. (In a barbershop a cappella chorus, you also memorize lyrics).
The Music Men Chorus (Palomar Pacific Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society) is a men’s acappella choir that performs 4-part, close-harmony songs arranged in the “Barbershop” Style, known for its ringing chords. We sing a variety of song genres (romantic ballads, movie and show tunes, Great American Songbook selections, patriotic songs, inspirational numbers, and Christmas holiday favorites), performing at both public and private venues in North County.
Our members believe that singing in our chorus keeps them healthier, both physically and mentally. We
have 3 members in their 90’s who regularly attend rehearsal.
If you are a male, high school age or older, who loves to sing and is interested in joining a chorus, we invite you to attend one of our Tuesday evening rehearsals, learn more about us, and see how singing can enhance your life. Previous musical experience is helpful but not a requirement. We meet at 7 pm at San Marcos Lutheran Church, 3419 Grand Avenue, in the Luther Hall. For more information, contact Bill at (760) 5856315 or visit our website, www. musicmenchorus.org.

wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay offer enhanced security through tokenization — your actual card number is never transmitted during the transaction. But they also create new vulnerabilities.
“Tokenized payments expose fewer card details than swiping a plastic card,” says Kuyucu.
But the same technology that protects your card number can be exploited in other ways. RFID skimming — where criminals use handheld scanners to read contactless cards through wallets or purses — has become more common in crowded tourist areas. There are RFID-blocking wallets that can help protect your technology, but clever criminals are always finding new ways to get around the safeguards.
The biggest technological vulnerability might be the most basic: human behavior. Fineas Tatar, co-CEO of Viva Executive Assistants, trains high-level executives on travel security. He emphasizes daily expense tracking using tools like Google Sheets or Notion databases.
The reality Check
Even following all the expert advice won’t guarantee a fraud-free trip. Banks vary dramatically in
their response to travel-related fraud claims. Some resolve disputes within days, others drag the process out for months. Some automatically side with merchants in international disputes, others give customers the benefit of the doubt.
Darius Kingsley, Head of the consumer banking practices for JPMorgan Chase, recommends travelers verify booking sites carefully to avoid trouble.
“Take extra caution when booking accommodations for your trip,” he says. “Scammers try to mimic or impersonate popular travel websites by re-recreating familiar branding, logos, or company verbiage.”
Don’t rely on your insurance policy to cover fraudulent charges. Joe Cronin, president of International Citizens Insurance, points out an important limitation: “Insurance doesn’t cover fraudulent charges. This is something you have to talk to your credit card provider about.”
Susan Sherren, founder of Couture Trips, takes a different approach with her high-end clients: “One of the most convenient ways to protect your credit card is to first prepay for as many travel components as possible, such as hotels, tours, and transfers.” By prepaying through a secure platform, travelers reduce the number of transactions and potential exposure points during the trip.
if You Travel, it Could
Happen To You
It’s probably not a question of if, but when you’ll be a victim of credit card fraud while you’re traveling. The criminals are getting more sophisticated, the technology is evolving faster than security measures, and the sheer volume of transactions while traveling creates multiple vulnerability points.
The goal isn’t to avoid all credit card problems. That’s impossible in today’s interconnected world. It’s to make yourself a harder target and to be prepared when something goes wrong. Carry backup cards. Set up real-time alerts. Keep your receipts. Monitor your accounts obsessively.

fertility arises, as with Hannah, Sarah, Rachel, and Elizabeth, all strong biblical characters. They asked, “Why did God, as it was believed, make them infertile?” Did they have the right to ask the question? We move to the New Testament and continue to ask questions. There is a woman caught in the act of adultery. The men are there with judgment and to punish her. But where is the male perpetrator? Is he not also guilty? Finally, true justice exposes the men who are her accusers. Thankfully, Jesus confronts the issue by revealing who is guilty. Even Mary, the innocent mother of Jesus, is told she will have a child. She is smart enough to know you don’t have babies without intercourse and asks, ‘How is this possible, because I have not had sex with a man.’ Tradition has it that Mary is the subject of mostly male judgment. Remember when the religious community tells Jesus that they know who their Father is, suggesting Jesus was born a bastard. Poor Mary had to live with the stigma of a pregnancy out of wedlock. Did she ever ask why she had to suffer disgrace? Also, Jesus seems to have accepted Mary Magdalene after healing her. While there is little evidence of her future, she was constantly attached to Jesus for protection from judgment, especially the men of the day, according to early church tradition. Did she ever ask, why?
Time after time, issues arose as to property rights, pregnancies, and sexual relationships. In Israel today, there is a constant move for equal rights despite all we find in the Bible. We are in the religious world today of the muslim community. Still, not only there, but we also have it in the Christian world with discrimination as to places of authority with biblical interpretation. It seems we are still dealing with the question of God asking, “Adam, what have you done?” It has been a long journey from the garden, with equal rights to vote, to have one’s own bank account, to use a credit card, to own property, and to have an equal voice in many church roles. Give her the right to ask questions and express her views. Is she not of equal mind and spirit? Created from the very man who gave her life.
