Is Islam to be Feared?

Or to be Respected? by lyle e. davis Introduction - Islamophobia In contemporary political and cultural discourse, the term “Islamophobia” is often used to describe prejudice, hostility, or irrational fear directed toward Muslims and Islam. While genuine anti-Muslim bigotry certainly exists, many critics argue that not all concerns about Islam should be dismissed as irrational prejudice. In the opinion of many observers, fears regarding Islam arise not from ignorance but

from an examination of Islamic scripture, the historical expansion of Islamic empires, modern terrorist movements acting in Islam’s name, and ongoing debates within Muslim communities about the meaning of religious texts.

Critics contend that certain passages within the Quran and other foundational Islamic texts contain commands regarding warfare against unbelievers that can reasonably concern non-Muslims. They further note that militant groups ranging from medieval conquerors

to modern terrorist organizations have repeatedly cited these texts to justify violence. In their view, the fact that extremists can draw support from actual religious sources distinguishes Islam from a purely peaceful faith that has merely been distorted by a few bad actors.

Scriptural Passages That Cause Concern One of the primary reasons many people express concern about Islam is the existence of Quranic passages that discuss warfare against un-

“Muhammad is the apostle of Allah. Those who follow Him are merciful to one another but harsh to the disbeliever.”-48:29 Defenders of Islam respond that such criticisms ignore historical context, overlook peaceful teachings within the religion, and unfairly judge nearly two billion Muslims by the actions of a minority.

They argue that the overwhelming majority of Muslims reject violence against innocent people and interpret controversial passages as applying only to specific historical conflicts. These counterarguments deserve consideration and form an important part of any honest discussion of the issue.

Nevertheless, many people maintain that concerns about Islam cannot simply be dismissed as prejudice. While broad hostility toward individual Muslims is unjustified, fear of certain doctrines, interpretations, and historical patterns associated with Islam may be understandable. From this perspective, skepticism toward Islam is not necessarily a form of bigotry but a response to legitimate questions raised by scripture, history, and contemporary events.

In the opinion of many critics, the issue is not simply that violent passages exist but that they appear within a text regarded by Muslims as the literal word of God. Unlike historical accounts that merely describe warfare, these verses can be interpreted as divine commands.

Extremist groups have repeatedly cited such passages as justification for violent acts, leading some observers to question whether those groups are entirely misreading the text or merely emphasizing aspects of it that more moderate Muslims prefer to downplay.

Muslim scholars generally argue that these verses must be understood in the context of specific military conflicts involving the early Muslim community. They note that neighboring passages discuss treaties, self-defense, and particular enemies rather than all non-Muslims. However, critics counter that if a sacred text contains language that can repeatedly inspire violent movements across centuries, concern about the text itself is understandable.

Even if the mainstream interpretation is peaceful, many people believe it remains reasonable to ask get until just after you need it.

Within a relatively short period, Islamic political authority governed millions of people who had previously belonged to other religious traditions.

In the opinion of many historians, these conquests cannot be understood solely as spiritual missionary activity. They involved military campaigns, political domination, and the establishment of Islamic rule over conquered populations.

Supporters of Islam correctly note that many other civilizations and religions engaged in conquest.

Christian kingdoms launched crusades, European empires colonized foreign lands, and secular governments have committed atrocities throughout history. Nevertheless, critics maintain that acknowledging the sins of other traditions does not erase concerns about Islamic expansionism. They argue that historical comparisons may provide context, but they do not eliminate the facts of Islamic conquest.

Furthermore, some critics contend that the concept of a unified religious and political order remains embedded within portions of Islamic thought. While most contemporary Muslims do not advocate conquest, the historical memory of Islamic expansion continues to influence debates about political Islam and the role of religion in government.

Modern Extremism and the Problem of Interpretation Perhaps the strongest argument advanced by those who believe fears of Islam are justified is the persistence of modern extremist movements operating explicitly in Islam’s name. Organizations such as ISIS, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, and others did not claim secular or nationalist motivations. They openly declared religious objectives and repeatedly cited Islamic scripture.

Many observers ask a straightforward question: if Islam is fundamentally peaceful, why do so many violent groups consistently appeal to Islamic texts rather than inventing entirely new justifications? In the opinion of many critics, the frequency with which extremists invoke Islamic doctrine suggests that the problem cannot be dismissed entirely as a misunderstanding.

Muslim scholars often respond that extremists selectively quote scripture while ignoring broader teachings regarding justice, mercy, and protection of civilians. This argument has merit and reflects the position of many Muslims worldwide. Yet critics maintain that the existence of competing interpretations remains troubling. If a sacred text can plausibly be used to support both peaceful coexistence and violent jihad, some argue that concern about the text and its influence is understandable.

The issue is not whether every Muslim is dangerous. Few serious critics make such a claim. Rather,

the concern is whether certain ideas within Islamic tradition provide fertile ground for radicalization. In the opinion of many observers, the continued emergence of extremist movements suggests that this question deserves serious examination rather than dismissal.

How Non-Radical Muslims Respond Defenders of Islam frequently argue that extremists represent only a tiny fraction of Muslims. Statistically, this is undoubtedly true. The overwhelming majority of Muslims do not engage in terrorism, support terrorist organizations, or participate in violent jihad.

However, critics often ask a different question: how do moderate Muslims address the passages and traditions that extremists cite? Responses vary considerably. Some Muslims interpret controversial verses as historically limited and no longer applicable. Others argue that the passages concern warfare under specific circumstances rather than relations with non-believers generally. Still others advocate reinterpretation of traditional doctrines in light of modern principles of pluralism and human rights.

While these responses demonstrate that many Muslims reject violence, critics argue that they also reveal an ongoing struggle over interpretation. In the opinion of many commentators, the existence of such debates indicates that concerns about Islamic doctrine are not entirely imaginary. If difficult passages require extensive contextualization and reinterpretation, outsiders may reasonably wonder why those passages exist and how they should be understood.

At the same time, fairness requires acknowledging that millions of Muslims live peacefully in nonMuslim societies, contribute positively to their communities, and reject extremist ideologies. Any serious argument must recognize this reality even while questioning aspects of the religion itself.

Distinguishing Criticism from Prejudice A central problem in discussions of Islamophobia is the tendency to conflate criticism of Islam with hostility toward Muslims. These are not necessarily the same thing.

A person may oppose certain Islamic doctrines, question historical actions carried out in Islam’s name, or express concern about political Islam without harboring hatred toward individual Muslims. In libIslamophobia continued on page 12

Private Use of Fireworks is Prohibited in Escondido As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, residents and visitors are reminded that all fireworks are illegal to purchase, possess or use in Escondido and throughout San Diego County.

fireworks, no questions asked, from Saturday, June 20 until Sunday, July 5 at any Escondido Fire Station. The purpose of the Fireworks Collection Campaign is to reduce the number of fires and injuries caused by illegal fireworks.

For more information, Escondido residents are encouraged to call the Escondido Fire Department at 760-839-5400. Residents of other cities are encouraged to contact their own local Fire Departments for more information about fireworks in their jurisdictions.

That includes firecrackers, cherry bombs, bottle rockets and even sparklers.

“Fireworks are extremely dangerous and their use can easily cause serious injuries and start fires” said Escondido Acting Fire Chief, Tyler Batson. “Please remember that ALL fireworks are illegal in San Diego County, and for good reason. The grass and brush in and around Escondido are extremely dry and vulnerable to ignition sources such as fireworks.

Anyone thinking about buying and using illegal fireworks needs to understand that negligently causing a fire can result in severe criminal and financial consequences.”

The City Council has updated the City’s fireworks ordinance to hold property owners and social hosts accountable and establishes up to a $1,000 fine for violations involving illegal fireworks.

Enforcement efforts will continue to prioritize community safety through proactive patrols and strict application of the new regulations.

Residents are urged to celebrate responsibly and help protect the community from fire and injury risks.

BJ’s is a popular high-end restaurant in Escondido located in our huge shopping center in S. Escondido.

I decided to reward Friedrich with a nice, sit-down lunch in a great restaurant. He had never been to BJ’s and he’s been working very hard and very efficiently so today, instead of hamburgers from Burger King or McDonalds, I treated him here.

BJ’s is a lovely restaurant, beautifully designed, attractive decor

The only critical comment I have is . . . the kitchen was a bit slow.

It really was not all that crowded but it took awhile to get our meal.

Drinks came right away, Diet Pepsi for me, Pepsi for Friedrich. He ordered a cheeseburger ($15.99) and it was massive! He could not eat it all and took a carryout box with him. I had a starter salad with clam chowder cup, ($12.99) - drinks were $3.99 each with refills at no charge.

Total Bill $40, with tip, $48. Well worth the price - great food, great service!

Last Friday, June 19th, was my and Mary’s 66th wedding anniversary . . . so I decided to take her out for dinner.

Wow! I should have only ordered one and shared. Their servings are enormously generous. So much that we brought two carry-out boxes home . . . plenty of food for two/ three days.

I had to coach Mary I bit; taught her to spear pieces of chicken with her fork then dip it in the delicious and warm Teriyaki sauce. She soon got it and did a fine job of eating her share of the chicken.

The California Center for the Arts is also hosting free activities in Grape Day Park leading up to the fireworks. The community is welcome to enjoy the fireworks show from anywhere in central Escondido including Grape Day Park.

The fireworks will be launched from their typical location in the Woodward Avenue parking lot at 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. Grape Day Park will be open past dusk with traditional regulations in place – no dogs, BBQs, or alcohol.

78-year-old Marytrese Comer, better known to us as “Cookie” was found dead in her home . . . a scant two blocks away from my partner, Evelyn Madison’s house.

Christopher Ryan Trudell, 43, was taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies and booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

Cookie was a bright, bubbly, sort of person. Attractive, well groomed, always with a ready smile. She was active in her church and sang in the choir. Hard to imagine she’s gone.

Details are sketchy, but frightening. It’s not often you have a neighbor murdered.

Cookie was the widow of John Trudell, a CPA who passed away several years ago. I knew John quite well, too, as he was also a Kiwanian and had been the club treasurer for years. I did not know Christopher Trudell. He was to have been arraigned this past Wednesday but no details available as of this writing.

Yet practical realities like maintenance, accessibility, and shrinking fixed incomes create tough choices between aging in place and selling to relocate. The good news? Your home equity can help bridge the gap in powerful ways.

Using Home Equity to Ease the Pressure Here’s where many seniors find the most flexibility: tapping into the equity you’ve built over years of ownership without necessarily

selling. With trillions of dollars in home equity held by older Americans, this “house rich, cash poor” situation has practical solutions. A Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) offers a revolving line of credit secured by your home. You can draw funds as needed for home repairs, medical bills, or daily living expenses. Interest rates are often lower than other options, and fees tend to be more modest than alternatives. It works well if you have some income to cover monthly payments (interest-only at first, then principal later) and want flexibility for unpredictable costs. However, the requirement to make payments can strain a tight retirement budget, and lenders can freeze or reduce the line during economic shifts. For many retirees, a reverse mortgage (specifically the federally insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage, or HECM, available to homeowners 62 and older) provides a better fit for long-term aging in place. You borrow against your equity with no monthly mortgage payments required as long as you live in the home as your primary residence and keep up property taxes, insurance, and maintenance. County Animal Services Rescues Animals From Rancho Santa Fe Property

County Animal Services removed dozens of animals from a Rancho Santa Fe property on Wednesday after getting a report of possible neglect involving horses.

The investigation into the case is ongoing, and no additional details are available at this time.

Animal control officers visited the property on the 15000 block of El Camino Real to follow up on the concern and determined a warrant was needed to safely assist the animals. After the warrant was approved, officers remained on site late into the night to collect and transport the animals to safety.

Several animals showed signs of medical issues, including being underweight and having skin and dental conditions. One dog was also found dead inside the home.

The larger animals are receiving care at the Bonita shelter, which is also caring for horses rescued from a Julian property with help from the Spirit Medical Fund.

All rescued animals are now receiving veterinary care at the County’s shelters in Carlsbad and Bonita.

County Animal Services protects the health, safety and welfare of people and animals in San Diego County by responding to injured animals, investigating abuse reports and helping keep the public safe from aggressive pets.

The Bill Comes Next. ey sits in reserve, it earns interest. Even at a modest 3 percent, it grows on its own. It replenishes itself. It builds a bigger cushion for the next disaster without costing taxpayers a single extra dollar.

That’s how a responsible budget is supposed to work.

I want to walk you through something happening with your County budget, because where it’s headed should concern every resident of San Diego County.

Let’s start with the good news.

The County has about $360 million in reserves.

That’s not spending money. That’s our rainy-day fund. It’s what we draw on when a wildfire tears through the backcountry, when an earthquake hits, when a real emergency lands on us with no warning.

And here’s the part most people don’t think about. While that mon-

Just look at the City of San Diego, struggling under deficits after years of spending money it didn’t have. The County is bigger, but the math is exactly the same. It is only a matter of time before we end up in the same place.

But that’s not what’s happening.

And here’s what I need you to understand about what comes next.

Right now, the County is spending down reserves to pay for longterm, ongoing programs.

When the reserves run dry and the bills keep coming, they will not cut spending. They never do.

Reserves are a one-time savings account. Long-term programs are a forever bill. When you use one to pay for the other, you don’t just spend the money. You kill the future growth that money would have earned. And once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Instead, they will come to you.

They will tell you the County is in crisis, that there’s no other option, that they just need a little more.

Take one line item. We currently spend $5 million a year on legal services for people in this country illegally. Help getting a green card. Help figuring out how to stay. Even legal defense for people who committed serious crimes.

If my colleagues pass this budget, that number jumps to $13 million.

That’s $13 million a year not going to our roads. Not going to our parks. Not going to the infrastructure families across this county actually depend on.

And the ask will be higher taxes.

We are already seeing it. There is already a push for a new countywide sales tax increase, sold to you as being for your health and safety. But you can’t tax your way out of a spending problem.

The money you already send to Sacramento isn’t coming back to fix our roads or fund our deputies.

Now they want more of what’s left in your pocket.

This is decades of bad policy from both parties catching up with us.

Spend more than you take in.

Drain the savings. Then ask the taxpayer to backfill the hole.

Letters to the Editor Dear lyle, I am writing to you today in response to the recent article in [The Paper] regarding the difficult decision of when the time comes to put your dog down.

The piece provided total confusion on a deeply emotional topic that many pet owners must eventually face. Since living in the San Diego area for the last 30 years I have had this horrible experience twice. One time I chose to have the local Veterinarian administer the shot.

Allowing my beloved Golden Retriever to cross over the Rainbow bridge in the comfort of her own home with me by her side. However, I do remember one thing, as we enjoyed (14) years together I used to say to her... “Jewell, you can’t go until I go with you” unfortunately that wasn’t possible. But I do remember the look she gave me when the shot was administered.

The “LOOK” I shall always regret. I believe she really hung on to those words I used to say to hear and for that I am regretfully sorry.

On the other hand, having to place a gun to my dog’s head and pull the trigger hits me right in the HEART !!! No way could I find this to be human...EVER !!!

So my question regarding this article... Is this based on a true story or is it a make believe suggestion ?

Can this company refuse to cover my costs for a canceled river cruise?

by Christopher Elliott Michael Cawley and his wife book a Rhine River cruise that’s cut short after mechanical failure forces their ship to dock two days early. CroisiEurope refunds the cruise fare but offers a credit, not cash, for the couple’s nonrefundable train and hotel expenses. Can it do that?

Q: My wife and I have been looking forward to our six-day Rhine River cruise with CroisiEurope. It was supposed to be a relaxing trip before we continued on to Dublin.

What we got instead was a series of mechanical problems — and a lot of anxiety.

The trouble began almost immediately. On the first night, the ship stopped cruising early. The next morning, scuba divers worked under the hull. We departed late, and a scheduled excursion to Heidelberg was canceled.

That night, around midnight, the ship hit something. The hull shook.

At 1:30 a.m., all passengers were woken up and sent to the lounge.

This lasted for an hour before we were allowed to go back to our staterooms.

The final announcement came the next morning: the cruise was canceled because of a bad motor.

Our original disembarkation was Amsterdam, and we had nonrefundable travel booked from there to Dublin. My wife and I did not want to risk further delays. We immediately booked noncancelable train travel to Amsterdam, plus two nonrefundable nights at the Hotel des Arts. Later that afternoon, a CroisiEurope representative advised that some guests would continue by bus, but by then, we had already made firm commitments and could not join that alternative trip.

CroisiEurope refunded the original cruise fare of $4,792, but we have additional expenses of about $1,400. Can you help us get a refund?

— Michael Cawley, West Chester, Pa. A: I think CroisiEurope should have reimbursed you for all of your expenses.

Mechanical failures, an interrupted night’s sleep after the ship struck something — these are not minor inconveniences.

Under EU Regulation 1177/2010, a European consumer protection

Illustration by Dustin Elliott law, passengers on inland waterway journeys are entitled to reimbursement in cases of cancellation because of technical faults, which includes meals and, if an overnight stay becomes necessary, reasonable accommodations.

But the regulation for inland waterways is a little tricky. Once an event like yours happens, the operator must offer two options: either rerouting you to the final destination free of charge or providing a full refund of the ticket price.

CroisiEurope offered a bus reroute after you had already committed to the nonrefundable train and hotel to Amsterdam. This timing is important. You were forced to make arrangements because the company did not provide the necessary assistance immediately. The offer of a bus came too late.

What could you have done differently? The moment the cruise was officially canceled, you should have contacted a manager at CroisiEurope and ask that it book and pay for your rerouting, which the regulation implies it should do. Booking nonrefundable tickets on your own, especially without a clear paper trail confirming CroisiEurope’s refused assistance, makes recovering that money harder.

Since CroisiEurope has already issued the full cruise refund, your dispute is over the out-of-pocket expenses. After we contacted the company, CroisiEurope offered you a $1,400 credit for a future cruise.

“Per our legal analysis, the Regulation (EU) No. 1177/2010 does not apply to Mr. Cawley’s case, as this law concerns a package travel con-

tract and not merely a river transport service,” a representative told us.

That’s not the resolution you were hoping for — and frankly, it wasn’t for me, either.

Why You Should Keep Your Phone With You When You Travel

Michelle Girasole thought she knew Rhode Island’s Beavertail State Park well enough to leave her phone in the car. It was a warm summer morning and she wanted to catch the sunrise with her terrier, Scooter.

She was looking forward to a digital detox—a few minutes without calls, texts, or notifications.

How to Disconnect Responsibly You don’t have to choose between safety and mindfulness. Lachlan Brown, author of Hidden Secrets of Buddhism, learned that on a recent trip to Kyoto, where he stayed in a traditional Japanese inn. He decided to be “more present” by locking his phone in his ryokan’s safe.

But when she followed Scooter off the path, she lost her bearings.

“I ended up being stranded with no water, sunscreen, or way to call for help,” says Girasole, a software developer from North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

She spent the next nine hours lost.

It wasn’t until a fisherman spotted her on the shoreline that she finally made it back to safety.

“If I had my phone,” she says, “none of that would have happened.”

Girasole’s experience is a warning to anyone considering the travel industry’s latest wellness obsession: the digital detox. Hotels and tour operators are aggressively marketing the idea that the only way to truly be present is to lock your phone in the hotel safe.

TripIt’s latest Travel Trends Report suggests people are buying it. It found that nearly all travelers say they want to disconnect on vacation (98 percent), with 85 percent hoping to unplug from their phones.

The intention is understandable: People are overwhelmed and looking for a true mental break.

But fully disconnecting can unintentionally create more risk than relief. A smartphone is not a distraction you need to escape. It can be a digital bodyguard. And for the average traveler, leaving it behind is more than just inconvenient—it could also be reckless.

Your Phone is a Safety Device “Why anyone would travel, especially internationally, without their cell phone is beyond me,” says John Gobbels, chief operating officer of Medjet.

He warns that going offline removes your safety net. If you have a medical emergency, you can’t rely on finding a landline or a hotel computer to communicate with your travel insurance company.

“If a member doesn’t have a cell phone, it makes it incredibly difficult to triangulate all the communications needed between hospitals,

Harding Bush, a former Navy SEAL and associate director of security at Global Rescue, agrees.

He advises travelers to treat their phones as essential safety equipment, not optional accessories.

“Your phone is a powerful safety device,” he says. “Don’t discard it during international travel. Turn off the distractions, but keep it ready for emergencies and the unexpected.”

Disconnected Travelers are Soft Targets Beyond medical emergencies, there’s the issue of physical security. Rafay Baloch, a cybersecurity expert and author of the book Web Hacking Arsenal, says that criminals specifically look for travelers who appear disoriented.

“Lost and disconnected people become targets for criminals who seek to isolate them,” Baloch says.

When you walk around with a paper map—or worse, just wandering aimlessly—you broadcast vulnerability. A smartphone allows you to look like you know exactly where you are going, even if you don’t.

“The practice of going without technology does not lead to greater presence because it creates a pattern of behavior that criminals can identify,” he warns.

Digital Detox is a Luxury Myth

the trend is a luxury concept that only works for the ultra-wealthy.

“A true digital detox is a luxury because the wealthy can outsource risks,” Aviv explains. “They have fixers who know the local terrain, drivers who handle logistics, and assistants who monitor alerts. In other words, they can turn off their phone because someone else’s phone always stays on.”

Ari Lightman, a professor of digital media at Carnegie Mellon University, notes that the trend has been commercialized by high-end resorts looking to capitalize on our anxiety.

“But for the rest of us who don’t have a security team, the phone is our lifeline,” he says.

You May Also Need Your Phone for Insurance There is also a practical financial reason to stay connected. Lauren McCormick, a spokeswoman for travel insurance provider Squaremouth, says your phone is the most efficient tool for protecting your travel investment if things go wrong.

“Keeping your phone with you allows you to quickly submit insurance documents, photos, and receipts in real time,” McCormick says.

If your flight is canceled or your luggage is stolen, you need immediate access to your policy information and emergency assistance numbers.

If going phoneless is so dangerous, why is it being marketed as a luxury experience?

“It gives you access to your important information about the claims filing process and what documentation is needed,” she adds.

“Within twenty minutes I had taken a wrong turn, misread a wooden sign I couldn’t translate, and walked straight into a residential neighborhood,” recalls Brown.

That’s when he realized that presence without safety is just vulnerability.

Now, he advises a “middle way.”

Keep the phone with you, but use it intelligently.

“Put it on airplane mode for an hour if you want quiet, but don’t ditch the lifeline,” Brown says.

“For the average traveler, the smartphone isn’t a distraction. It’s a digital bodyguard.”

You’ll also want to be sure that your phone works when you’re abroad.

The easiest way is to get an eSIM from a company like Celitech.

Don’t Leave Home Without Your Phone The verdict is clear: The “digital detox” travel trend is dangerous advice for anyone who doesn’t have a private security detail.

Whether you are hiking in Rhode Island or navigating the streets of Kyoto, your phone may be the only thing standing between you and a potential disaster. Download your maps, keep your insurance app handy, and turn on “Do Not Disturb” if you must. San Diego Humane Society Continues Ongoing Care of Animals Rescued from Property in Julian Nearly seven weeks after San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) took over operations at the Villa Chardonnay property in Julian and rescued 728 neglected animals, the organization continues to make progress while providing daily care for the animals.

All farm animals rescued from the property have been successfully placed at the Humane Farming Association’s Suwanna Ranch in Elk in Elk Creek, CA. This includes two alpacas who needed to be sheered at SDHS’s Escondido Campus before the long transport north, and a sweet mini-pony named Peanut Butter.

At the height of the response, SDHS cared for more than 700 animals, including horses, cats, dogs and livestock. Today, 107 horses remain at the Julian property, where staff and volunteers continue to provide medical treatment, nutrition and rehabilitation. SDHS is staffing the property around the clock with an incident command structure, led by its Humane Law Enforcement, to ensure the animals are safe during this ongoing investigation.

“Our team has made incredible progress, but the work isn’t finished,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. “Many of these horses are seniors with significant medical needs and they deserve the time, attention and resources necessary to help them recover and move on to brighter futures.”

“Disease prevention is a critical part of large-scale animal rescue operations,” said Dr. Weitzman.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we implemented quarantine measures, increased testing and are closely monitoring every horse.”

Recent efforts at the property have focused on ongoing veterinary care, including dental work, hoof care, diagnostic testing and treatment for chronic conditions. Approximately half of the remaining horses have already received dental and farrier care, with additional treatments continuing in the coming weeks.

SDHS has also been managing a precautionary equine Strangles quarantine, after one horse who left the site tested positive for the contagious bacterial disease. Equine Strangles is a common disease that can emerge when horses experience stress, particularly when animals have come from environments where preventative care was limited.

Veterinary experts believe it is possible the horse who tested positive may have been an asymptomatic carrier of the bacteria and began shedding it due to the stress associated with the transport and relocation. To date, 11 horses tested have returned negative results. An onsite veterinarian continues to oversee the horses’ health and medical

care while the team works toward safely resuming placement efforts.

Meanwhile, SDHS’s work with the 446 cats rescued from the property and two additional kittens born, is nearing completion. Since the rescue began, 305 cats have been adopted, including 269 through the organization’s Working Cat Program, which places under-socialized cats in outdoor homes where they can be cared for by their owners and thrive. An additional 84 cats have been transferred to partner organizations.

Just 11 working cats from the Julian rescue remain in care as the organization continues to seek appropriate placements. Many of the rescued cats required extensive medical treatment, including specialized dental procedures. Veterinary teams report the cats have recovered well and are thriving in their new homes and environments.

The dog population from Villa Chardonnay has also steadily declined through adoptions, transfers and reunifications. Out of 30 total, only 14 dogs remain in care.

Pastor Huls should have been different.

As I sit here preparing to write this article, I feel convicted about all the time I have wasted by not getting to the subject, with so much trivia and indulgence, just sitting and wasting time. However, it is now time to reckon with what I have done. In many ways, I regret the self-indulgence and time lost.

I know I am entitled to time off, and I am even pondering a person’s liberty and rights. Also, who really cares what I do and think? There is really only one person responsible, and that is me. Why should I care if I waste time and miss opportunities to make better use of my time? I can tell you who is reading this column. I’ve had many opportunities over the years, but I didn’t respond as I should have. It is very possible that both people and my future might have been different. Upon reflection, I regret that much could and

Often in conversations, I have heard the triad expression by people who say, ‘it could have, would have, and should have.’ Each of these carries a regret. When we look at the consequences of so many acts and behaviors of those in prisons, alcoholics, drug addicts, and how much of this all started, there has to be some regret. Had it never begun, things would be much different. We find similar experiences in how we use our tongues. In the biblical book of James, we are told that the tongue is like a fire. Once we give freedom to say what we are thinking, the anger that is building, and then vent, so much of what is said is regretted. Once it is said, it cannot be taken back; what remains is regret. Possibly the most destructive part of all this is the finality of life in death. In my counseling, I have often heard it said, ‘If only I could take the words back, or even undo what I have done, but it is too late, and I regret it.’

So what does one do with regret? Tragically, many have to live with it. If there is a lesson to be learned, it is to watch what one says and does. It is important for anyone to think about what they will say before saying it. The same is true about what one does. Often, after words are said and deeds are done, there is guilt and regret, especially if others are hurt and relationships are fractured. To build one’s life as it says in Proverbs, on responsible words, when it says, ‘a word fitly spoken is like apples set in silver.’ It is always better to leave a good word and deed than a bad one.

We are 25 years into a new age for mankind and Planet Earth. The combination of AI (artificial intelligence) with mankind’s aggregate knowledge base through linked servers on the IW (Intelligent Web) began in 2001. It marked the beginning of a new age for mankind and our home planet. Many of the names for this new age fail in their attempt to capture its essence but none describe it better than the “AI Age”.

Since 2001, the IW’s linked servers have held an ever-growing knowledge base thousands of times larger than the internal knowledge base of even the smartest human. The AI that parses this knowledge base is faster than any human intelligence and it is not saddled with human prejudice or emotions. Government, technol-

ogy and academic professionals across the globe rapidly adapted to the AI enhanced IW and this new and growing technological miracle as it is rapidly began the process of changing the way mankind works and lives. The AI /IW is still in its infancy and will continue to grow and improve in scope and effectiveness. Many of the young DNs (digital natives) who grew up under the ubiquitous influence of the AI / IW have accepted AI as an internal component of their cognition. For older users, the AI / IW is a vital external cognitive and information resource that has expanded our access to knowledge with improved speed and cognitive power. For the older DIs, the AI / IW has also resulted in some reduced reliance on internal cognitive resources.

Folks 45 and older, (AKA DIs or digital immigrants) were adults when the IW was introduced in 2001. They eagerly adopted the IW/AI technology, but since their cognitive resources were fully formed by the time the IW was released in 2001, they naturally considered the IW’s resources to be an external source and subject to internal verification. By contrast, our children and grandchildren (AKA DNs or digital natives) have spent half their waking hours exposed to the IW through school or recreation. To them the information and answers from the IW are the same as internal information and not in need of further verification. The substitution of AI/IW for internal reasoning has cost DNs a few IQ points, but who needs to think

when the IW has all the answers??

From this century forward, mankind will live with instant access to his entire knowledge base and an AI to process it for answers and solutions. The fact that the IW knowledge base and the AI intelligence dramatically exceed the internal knowledge base and intelligence of any individual is certain.

But both the AI and the IW are created and updated by humans. In countries controlled by regimes whose politics demand a specific public agenda the AI and IW can be manipulated to support any desired agenda. This is happening in places like Russia, China, North Korea and Iran where the governing regime controls the electronic media. Even in the free world there are constant attempts by political and social advocates to insert their propaganda into data that is

assumed to be bias free. Mankind’s own irrational nature still impedes our eternal quests for peace, freedom and love.

This is a critical time in human history. In a single century human population has quadrupled to over eight billion while our technology has shrunk the World to the point where all people and cultures are in close contact. We simply weren’t ready for this yet. Racism, religious intolerance, nationalism, contrasting social theories you name it, we’ve all got it to some extent. We brandish weapons powerful enough to kill our civilization and we mock our differences.

We kill people to preserve ideas that were developed to preserve people. We have the means today to destroy ourselves and our civilization. Will we do it? The jury is still out!

A Bald Mommy With Two Furry Babies guy found them by a dumpster.

They’re sick and they‘re going to need lots of care. Are you interested?”

After more than 26 years working in animal shelters, I’ve seen almost everything. But this was the first time I met a bald Sphynx cat with two kittens covered with fur.

Rancho Coastal Humane Society visits our crowded rescue partners to transfer pets through Friends of County Animal Shelters - FOCAS. Transferring cats and dogs out of crowded shelters saves them, and it creates space for the next pets who arrive.

Orange County Animal Care (OCAC) told us, “We have a mommy cat with two tiny kittens. Some

While they had fur coats and didn’t look like Thumbelina, “It’s very likely these are her kittens. They have sphynx teeth and her sensitive stomach issues.”

I don’t know who was more surprised. Our friends at OCAC, when we said, “Yeah. We’ll take them.”

Or us, when we saw that the mommy cat was a rare, hairless, Sphynx cat and her two babies were covered with thick, fur coats.

Sphynx cats are an uncommon breed overall. They’re even more rare in Southern California. The odds of finding a Sphynx in a shelter or rescue are almost zero.

By the time they arrived at Charlotte’s Medical Center at RCHS, they were named Thumbelina with her kittens, Tornado and Tiddly Wink.

OCAC was right. They were sick.

They were abandoned by a dumpster, where they would have died if someone hadn’t heard Tumbelina’s cries for help.

We immediately began medical treatment. It took a while, but we saw improvement. They went into foster care with Rancho Coastal Humane Society’s Veterinarian, Dr. Jullie Moews.

There were so many questions.

The most pressing was whether these were Thumbelina’s babies, or they were from another mother, then raised by Thumbelina?

They went from death’s doorstep to their own, personal veterinarian.

In the opinion of many critics, the term “Islamophobia” is sometimes used too broadly, discouraging legitimate debate about religious doctrines. They argue that questioning scriptural teachings or historical practices should not automatically be equated with bigotry.

At the same time, criticism can become prejudice when individuals assume that all Muslims share extremist beliefs or pose a threat simply because of their faith. Such generalizations ignore the diversity of Muslim communities and unfairly judge individuals based on group identity rather than personal conduct.

The distinction is important. One may reasonably criticize ideas while respecting the rights and dignity of the people who hold them.

‘It was a place called Home,’’ I explained. ‘Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn’t like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.’

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn’t tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it:

Some parents NEVER owned their own house, never wore Levis, never set foot on a golf course, never traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck.

Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck.

Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.

My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, slow.

We didn’t have a television in our house until I was 9. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m.

And there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people. I was 21 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called ‘pizza pie.’ When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It’s still the best pizza I ever had.

I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn’t know weren’t already using the line. Pizzas were not delivered to our home but milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers -- I delivered a newspaper, 7 days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which I got to keep 2 cents. I had to get up at 6 a.m. every morning.

On Saturday, I had to collect the 49 cents from my customers. My favorite customers were the ones who gave me 50 cents and told me to keep the change. My least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.

There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or most anything offensive.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don’t blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

Many people argue that fear of Islam is not entirely irrational because it is rooted in concerns about scripture, history, political movements, and modern extremism.

Certain Quranic passages contain language that many non-Muslims find troubling. Islamic empires expanded through military conquest, and contemporary terrorist organizations continue to justify violence using Islamic texts. These realities lead some observers to conclude that skepticism toward Islam is understandable.

At the same time, historical honesty requires acknowledging that most Muslims reject violence, do not seek political domination, and interpret their religion in ways that emphasize peaceful coexistence. Millions of Muslims around the world live as loyal citizens of democratic societies and condemn terrorism without reservation.

The strongest argument, therefore, is not that all Muslims should be feared.

Rather, it is that concerns about certain aspects of Islamic doctrine and history should not automatically be dismissed as prejudice. A distinction must be maintained between criticism of ideas and hostility toward people. While anti-Muslim bigotry is unjustifiable, many individuals believe that careful scrutiny of Islam’s teachings, history, and political implications remains both legitimate and necessary. Whether one ultimately agrees with this conclusion or not, it represents a position grounded in concerns that many regard as worthy of serious discussion rather than automatic condemnation.

This year, the Summer Movies in the Park’s current lineup is scheduled to show about 130 movies in parks all around the county through October. A current list of this summer’s movies can be found here.

Movies typically begin about 15 minutes after the sun sets. Families and folk are encouraged to wear warm clothes and bring blankets as the weather can turn chilly when the sun goes down. Pre-show activities begin before dark.

The Summer Movies in the Parks program, now in its nineteenth year, started in 2007 as part of a “take back our parks” initiative and has given residents the opportunity to see great movies in great local recreation destinations, under starry skies.

As always, this year’s list of movies includes something for just about everyone ─ animated and live-action films that include comedies, musicals, action adventure, science fiction and romance.

There are older classics like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Goonies,” “Shrek” “Ghostbusters,” and “Ratatouille.”

And there are numerous recent releases, from “The Wild Robot,” to “A Minecraft Movie,” “Hoppers,” and 2025’s “Superman.”

So, live it up this summer! Head to the movies ─ under the stars in the great outdoors.
