THE UNTOLD STORY, LONG LOST & FORGOTTEN: HISTORY’S OLDEST FATHER’S DAY CARD RECENTLY DISCOVERED BY ARCHAEOLOGISTS! Father’s Day is not a modern invention – not by any stretch of the imagination – although many people may believe so today, according to replicated polls with the summary: “Yes, most Americans believe the concept of Father’s Day originated in the United States, after Mother’s Day.” Unknown to many, the idea of hon-

ouring one’s father extends back to the world’s earliest cultures, thousands of years ago! And now we have the proof!

The ceremonies of celebrating and honouring fathers on specific days can be traced back to such early civilisations as Babylon (modern day Iraq), to cite just one ancient example.

Archaeologists have discovered one of history’s oldest remnants of a Father’s Day card in the form of a clay tablet.

Father’s Day from page 1 A young Babylonian boy named Elmesu carved out this rudimentary father’s day card wishing his father good health, happiness, and long life. The special greeting was carved on a small clay tablet over 4,000 years ago today!

It is currently housed in the collections of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and is considered one of the great cultural discoveries of our time.

Life is often very deceiving.

If you selected “B” for fathers of newborn babies today being older than previous generations – well, you are correct!

According to the U.S. Census and other national studies, all reliable data agree and show that: “The average age of fathers of newborns is older today than nearly 50 years ago (1972) or even 83 years ago (1936)” The surprising results of these different researchers have already appeared online titled “Human Reproduction,” by lead author Yash Khandwala from our very own University of California at San Diego.

The average age of a father of a newborn in 1936 has been increasing through the years in age.

If you went high, you just missed the boat! The oldest (confirmed) age of a man having his (first baby) is “B” for 94-years-old. Ramjit Raghav, in Haryana, India, who fathered his (first child) in 2010 at the great age of 94. It has been reported that he fathered a second child at age 96.

There have been many claims from around the world of older, firsttime dads, but hard confirmation facts were suspiciously missing.

In America, 102-year-old former pastor, James E. Smith, was said to have fathered twin daughters at age 101. However, no “confirmed hard data” is available to adequately satisfy researchers.

FATHER OF THE MOST BIOLOGICAL CHILDREN HAD:

C. 210 children.

You should be sitting down while reading this because the answer will buckle your knees! If you guessed “C” for 210 children you, unbelievably, are correct!

Today, according to a recent scientific release titled, “New Fathers Are Older Than Ever,” the study revealed an increased average age of 31.1 years-old (for new fathers of newborn babies in America).

Sobhuzi II (1899-1982) was the longest reigning king in Swaziland history. During those 80 years as monarch, he had more than 70 wives and a reported 210 kids!

If this “aging trend” continues for first-time fathers, then, future “Father’s Day” celebrations will continue to be for older first-time dads!

INTERESTING NOTE: This trend of older fathers of newborn babies is not only here in the United States – it is occurring in several countries. Regarding firsttime dads in Germany today, the average age is 33.1 years-old; in England it’s closer to 34. Japan saw the largest increase in average age, jumping to 36.3 years of age (for fathers of newborns today).

FATHER’S DAY IS CELEBRATED TODAY IN OVER 110 COUNTRIES WORLDWIDE! Although more than 110 countries celebrate Father’s Day, there is no single internationally agreed-upon date for the holiday.

While the exact number and traditions vary by region, a large portion of the globe aligns with the United States’ date.

THIRD SUNDAY IN JUNE: Over 50 countries (including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and India) celebrate on this date.

MARCH 19TH: Observed by roughly 10 countries (such as Italy, Spain, and Portugal). This date coincides with the Catholic St. Joseph’s Day.

Although Father’s Day is celebrated on various days in many different parts of the world, no single culture can claim to have originated the idea (or concept) of Father’s Day. The sentiment predates human writing and, therefore, predates recorded history.

The General’s Quarters were spacious and elegant . . . silver serving sets, open bar, anything I wanted; an orderly available to answer my call - did I want a sandwich? Did I want a steak? I could pretend like I was a general and live a life most folks only dream about.

But, alas, it only lasted about six hours. But what a great six hours!

One of the greatest public relations guys I ever knew was Lt. Col. Len Hughes, USAF. He was assigned to SAFOI (Secretary of the Air Force, Office of Information), Chicago. I met Len on several occasions and we became great friends.

We boarded the plane and took off.

Nothing remarkable about the trip.

Just a long, boring plane ride. Long plane rides are usually boring but they are more boring when you’re on a military plane because you don’t normally have pretty flight attendants, plush seats, snacks, music, or movies. Air force planes are utilitarian. Very sparse on the comforts of home.

The road to Father’s Day was a bumpy one, at best. The complicated legacy still causes confusion as to exactly when the holiday became absolutely official. So let’s set the record straight by looking at the actual historical timeline: In 1916, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson approved the idea of observing an annual Father’s Day in America.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge made Father’s Day a national event.

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed the first-ever presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as “Father’s Day.” In 1972, Father’s Day was signed into official law by President Richard M. Nixon, making Father’s Day a bona fide holiday, 54 years ago today, in 2026.

WHICH FATHER’S DAY GIFT DO WE AMERICANS SPEND THE MOST MONEY ON?

We were on the ground there for, maybe, an hour . . . then off we went. Next stop, Tachikawa Air Base, Japan!

Upon arrival, just as promised by Len Hughes, Mita-san was there waiting for me. He took me under his wing, took me on a tour of Tokyo . . . and was a wonderful host.

He spoke English fluently and, obviously, knew Tokyo like the back of his hand. He wouldn’t let me pay for anything.

In the evening we stopped for dinner at a lovely Japanese restaurant.

When Mita-san excused himself to go to the restroom I took the waitress aside and said, “this guy won’t let me pay for anything. Please give me the bill and let me pay it.”

She did and I did.

Not sure of the Japanese culture but I may have committed a faux pas by paying for the bill. It seemed to me that Mita-san was disappointed when he learned of it. Len and Mita-san had worked closely together when Len was stationed in Japan and he wanted to ensure that any friend of Len’s was treated like royalty.

I fell in love with Japan. So much so that I seriously considered emigrating there. I thought it would be a wonderful experience for the kids to grow up and get to know the beauty, grace, and culture of

All of the items listed above are popular gifts on Father’s Day, however, by far the most money spent on dear ol’ dad on Father’s Day is “C” dining out! So, if you guessed correctly, well, you’re on a roll!

Aside from dining out, the most popular Father’s Day gifts in America reflect a mix of practical, experiential, and sentimental categories.

Year after year, top sellers include electronics (like noise-canceling headphones and smart watches), grilling and outdoor gear (pizza ovens and meat thermometers), and apparel & grooming (like slippers and premium cologne, etc.).

Japan. Such was not to be, however. If you were not a national you had little to no chance of getting a job in Japan in broadcasting or publishing. Additionally, it was so far away from Scotland that in the event of a family emergency it would have been a horrendously long travel time to get “home.”

We over-nighted at Tachikawa, again at a BOQ (Bachelor Officer’s Quarters).

The next morning we boarded our flight for Vietnam.

Going Home: We had made arrangements to fly home on board a Med-Evac plane.

We took on patients at Bien Hoa Air Base, outside of Saigon. Our manifest was that of military patients heading for home on board a huge C-141 configured to accommodate stretchers, gurneys, patients, and medical personnel. The patients wanted for nothing. The nurses and staff did all they could to ensure the patients were as comfortable as possible.

We made a brief stop in Tachikawa, then headed for Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska.

5th District Supervisor • Jim Desmond Sacramento Wants to Run a 145-Mile Power Line Through Our Backcountry The preliminary route runs from the Imperial Valley Substation, cuts straight through Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and heads north along State Route 79 through Warner Springs, Lake Henshaw, Palomar Mountain, Pala, Pauma, Rincon, and Valley Center on its way to Temecula.

That is our backyard. That is our backcountry. That is our state park.

Here is what bothers me most.

This is a Sacramento decision. The California Independent System Operator approved it in 2023.

There is a project moving quietly through Sacramento that will change rural North County forever, and most of the people who will live with it have never heard its name.

It is called the Golden Pacific Powerlink.

A 145-mile, 500-kilovolt transmission line. Steel lattice towers up to 200 feet tall, the height of a 20-story building. A right-of-way hundreds of feet wide. A price tag of $2.3 billion, with San Diego County ratepayers on the hook for roughly 9 percent of it. Scheduled to go live in 2032.

The California Public Utilities Commission has the final say on the route. The CPUC is not required to listen to the County. It is not required to listen to the people of Borrego Springs, Valley Center, Pauma Valley, or Warner Springs.

The communities that take the impact have no vote in the decision.

That is not how this is supposed to work.

Think about what is on the table.

Anza-Borrego is the largest state park in California. Almost 650,000 acres. Dark skies you cannot find on the coast anymore. Wildflower superblooms. Endangered species.

Cultural sites that tribal nations have protected for generations.

There is one transmission line in the park today, a small 69-kilovolt line on wooden poles built before the park existed. It would not be legal to build under modern law.

Now the state wants to drop 200foot steel towers across that same wilderness.

build 145-mile lines to haul power across the desert from plants in Arizona and Nevada.

In Valley Center, in Pauma, in Rincon, in Warner Springs, those towers would loom over family homes, working ranches, vineyards, and tribal land. Property values take the hit. Views are gone.

If we generated power where people actually live, we would not have to scar a state park to keep the lights on.

The character of these communities, the very thing that drew people here, gets traded away for a power line that is just passing through to somewhere else.

My office will be at every public meeting. We will file formal comments at every stage. We will push for any route that spares Anza-Borrego and protects the rural communities of District 5.

Why this route? Because it is the cheapest one. Routing around Anza-Borrego, going north of Temecula, or putting segments underground would add hundreds of millions of dollars, maybe more than a billion. Sacramento looked at the map and decided our park and our communities were the discount option.

And here is the part that should make every Californian angry.

We import nearly 30 percent of our electricity from out of state. We shut down San Onofre. We block new generation inside our own borders. Then we turn around and

That is not an energy strategy. That is a policy failure 30 years in the making, and rural North County is being handed the bill.

So I am going to fight this.

And we will keep saying the simple thing out loud: the people who live with these decisions deserve a real voice in making them.

The timeline matters, because public input counts most early. In-person open houses are coming later this year. The formal CPUC application is expected in the fall or winter of 2026. SDG&E is accepting stakeholder feedback through early November. When the application is filed, my office will share exactly how to get your comments on the record where they count.

This is going to be a long fight. I need North County in it.

Housing Authority Budget Advances Rental Assistance to Support Thousands of Families

By Cassie N. Saunders, County of San Diego Communications Office The County Housing Authority Board of Commissioners recently approved a $293.7 million Housing Authority budget that will help about 11,100 low-income households — more than 25,000 residents — each month.

The budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1st is $900,000 less than last year, mainly due to reductions in federal funding, which cut the Emergency Housing Voucher Program (EHV). The budget decrease is offset by increases in the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8), supporting rising rental costs for participants. In the last fiscal year, the County has transitioned about 140 EHV households to the Section 8 program. The budget also includes more than $21 million paid monthly to local landlords.

“Every month, thousands of families in our region rely on this support to stay in their homes,” said David Estrella, director of the County’s Housing and Community Development Services and Housing Authority.

“Housing stability is foundational to wellbeing. This budget allows us to maintain critical rental assistance, expand supportive housing opportunities, and continue partnering with

landlords and communities to meet growing needs.”

Roughly 68% of Housing Authority households include someone who is older or living with a disability, many relying on fixed incomes.

The County Housing Authority also supports 900 formerly homeless veteran households through the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program.

The County has increased leasing bonuses five-fold for landlords who rent to veterans experiencing homelessness, aiming to bring more rental units into the system and expand landlord participation.

Other programs include Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8), Project Based Vouchers, Emergency Housing Vouchers, Mainstream Vouchers for non-elderly people with disabilities, along with specialized programs for families, youth, and people experiencing homelessness.

The County’s Housing Authority is a separate legal entity from the County and develops its own annual budget, which is not reflected in the County’s Operational Plan.

Since 2017, the County has invested more than $334 million in affordable housing through: • use of excess County land • the Innovative Housing Trust Fund • state, federal and local funding sources These investments have led to over 3,766 new homes, with another 2,279 in development, all part of the County’s long‑term Housing Blueprint.

Nearly 99% of the $293.7 million Housing Authority budget is dedicated to housing assistance, including monthly rental payments.

Residents can explore the Housing for All Hub, an online dashboard offering real-time information on the region’s affordable housing inventory, rental assistance programs, homelessness services, inspections, permits, zoning and more.

Why You Should Pack Your Sense of Humor Did you hear the one about the professor who spent 24 hours trapped in airport hell trying to reach a conference on happiness?

It’s not a joke. It’s what happened to Michal Strahilevitz.

By the time she arrived in Florida, she’d missed half of her meeting.

The conference topic? Happiness and well-being.

When Strahilevitz, an expert on consumer psychology, told fellow attendees her story, they roared with laughter.

“When plans fall apart, laughter can help relieve the stress and put things in perspective,” she says.

To my great surprise, as I walked up and down the aisle of the aircraft and visited with patients that felt up to talking, I met a trooper from Jackson, Minnesota, a small town about 30 miles from where I was born, in Windom, Minnesota.

This truly is a small world.

After a brief stop at Elmendorf we were (a) back in the Continental United States, and (b) on our way to the midwest.

This long flight ended up back at Scott Field, in Illinois. Patients were off-loaded, I departed the plane and arranged for a commercial flight back to Chicago - maybe a one hour flight, and then I was home!

I flew to Chicago on a Delta flight and I remember a beautiful flight attendant who paid me a great deal of attention. She was a lightskinned African-American, beautiful teeth, great personality . . . and she seemed attracted to me. I was attracted to her as well, but I was dead-solid tired. Absolutely exhausted. We barely manged to retain enough energy to flirt . . . but that was as far as it was going to go.

My plane landed at O’Hare Airport and 45 minutes later I was home.

I remember Mary was crying when I arrived. She had heard how I had gotten shot at on my prior trip and she was worried sick about me. But now I was home, safe and sound and she had her man back - and I had my family back!

That was the end of my war-correspondent days. A great adventure.

Glad I did it - but it’s not something I would want to do again . . . besides, at my age I’d be doing well just to make it to the airport.

Forget 17-20 hour plane rides. Not for me. Today, if a flight is more than 2 hours and 45 minutes (the time it takes to fly to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, from San Diego), I ain’t going.

Budget’s $125 Sand Trap When does a “dirty” floor mat become a rental car rip-off?

by Christopher Elliott When Barb and Steve Pfeffer returned their Jeep Compass after an eight-day hiking trip in the Pacific Northwest, the drop-off seemed routine. A friendly Budget agent verified the fuel, offered a brief thanks, and sent them on their way.

It was anything but routine. Two weeks later, they found a $125 cleaning fee on their credit card.

The reason? "Excessive" sand on the floor mats. Budget claimed the debris forced the Jeep out of service for detailing.

Barb Pfeffer was stunned.

"We've rented cars for over 40 years for business and leisure and never have we been charged a cleaning fee," she complained.

This case raises several important questions about rental car policies: What constitutes "excessive" dirt that warrants a cleaning fee?

Should rental car companies warn customers at drop-off about potential charges?

ship perk they'd used successfully for years. They picked up the Jeep in Portland and spent eight days hiking in national parks across Washington and Oregon. When they dropped the car off in Seattle, they knew there was some sand on the floor mats.

"We had been hiking in the National Parks over the eight days we had the rental car," Pfeffer explained.

"Our view is that floor mats often take the brunt of use and Budget shouldn't be surprised that they get dirtier than the rest of the car."

The return process seemed routine. A Budget employee checked the vehicle, noted the full gas tank, and completed the transaction without mentioning any cleanliness concerns.

The Pfeffers even planned to write a positive review, but by the time they tried, the link had expired.

Then came the surprise email from Budget's client relations team: A $125 cleaning charge for what Budget called "excessive dirt and sand" that required the vehicle to be sent out for detailing.

The Pfeffers contacted Budget's customer service line, spent 15 minutes on hold waiting for a manager, and got disconnected.

They reached out to Costco Travel, which promised to look into it.

They wrote to Budget executives, making their case that two sandy floor mats didn't justify sending a car to a detailer.

Budget's response was a masterpiece of corporate evasion. It cited its rental agreement, which allows charges for vehicles returned in a condition that requires detailing, including "excessive odor, dirt, sand, trash and cigarette burns."

And that's when the Pfeffers contacted my team.

What makes dirt "excessive" in a rental car?

The rental car cleaning fee has become one of the industry's most contentious charges. Companies defend these fees as necessary to maintain fleet standards. Customers see them as "gotcha" charges that appear weeks after they've returned home.

Budget's rental agreement gives the company wide latitude. Section 2.6(c) states that customers will pay "a reasonable fee for cleaning the vehicle's interior or exterior for what [they] determine in [their] sole discretion are excessive stains, trash, dirt, soilage, odors or pet hair."

That phrase, "sole discretion," is the crux of the problem. It means Budget is the judge, jury, and financial executioner.

The photos Budget sent showed sand and some grass or small stones on black rubber floor mats.

The Pfeffers admit the debris was there, but they argue it could have been handled with routine vacuuming.

"I even thought about shaking off the mats myself but figured they would get vacuumed when they got the car washed," Barbara Pfeffer told me.

She makes a fair point. It's a rental car, not an operating room.

Sand Trap from page 8 ery returned vehicle as part of their standard turnaround process. Cars get wiped down, floors get vacuumed, and exteriors get washed.

It's built into the business model.

So when does regular cleaning become excessive cleaning that requires a detailer?

The car rental industry offers little guidance. I've reviewed dozens of similar cases where companies charged anywhere from $50 to $450 for cleaning. Some involved dog hair. Others involved beach trips. A few cases involved customers who swear the photos weren't even of their vehicle.

Ride-sharing companies like Lyft have clearer standards. They charge $20 for minor dirt on seats, $40 for moderate messes on the exterior or floorboard, and $150 for major damage. Those fees seem calibrated to actual cleaning costs rather than maximum revenue extraction.

But rental car companies aren't required to follow Lyft. They can charge what they want, when they want, and dare you to dispute it.

Should car rental companies warn customers at checkout?

Let's rewind to the Pfeffers' return.

The Budget agent looked inside the car. He had to, in order to log the mileage and fuel. Yet, he remained silent about the supposedly "excessive" sand.

"There was no mention of a need for cleaning," says Steve Pfeffer.

A simple heads-up would have solved the issue immediately. Instead, Budget waited two weeks until the Pfeffers were safely home in Minnesota.

When I pressed Pfeffer on this point, he was clear: "No, there was no mention of a need for cleaning.

The person was very nice, thanked us for our business, verified a full

tank and then finished checking us out."

If the mats truly required detailing and would take the vehicle out of service, shouldn't the agent have mentioned it?

A simple "Hey, there's quite a bit of sand here. You might want to shake out the mats before you leave, or we'll have to charge you a cleaning fee" would have given the Pfeffers a chance to fix the problem.

That's not customer service. It's an ambush.

Rental car companies will claim their employees are too busy to inspect every vehicle in detail at drop-off. Fine. But if you're going to charge someone $125 for dirty floor mats, you should at least mention it while they're standing in front of you.

The photos Budget provided to the Pfeffers raised another question: Were these even photos of their rental?

The Pfeffers couldn't be certain.

They say the floor mats looked dirtier in the photos than they remembered, possibly because Budget used a flash or black light that made the sand stand out against the black background.

"Perhaps some of the debris came from past users?" Pfeffer wondered.

Without a vehicle identification number visible in the photos, there's no way to verify which car was photographed. I've handled cases where rental companies mixed up vehicles and charged the wrong customer. It's rare, but it happens.

Are cleaning fees legitimate or just revenue padding?

Let's be clear about what's really going on with rental car cleaning fees. Companies call them cost recovery, but customers see them as profit centers.

Detailing is waxing, buffing, and interior shampooing — a lengthy process to restore a vehicle to showroom condition. Vacuuming sand off two mats is simply not detailing. It’s a five-minute job with an industrial shop vac.

I've seen this kind of thing before.

In one case I recently reviewed, a rental company charged a customer $450 for floor mat sand and justified it by claiming loss-of-use fees while the car sat in the detail shop. When pressed for documentation of the actual cleaning work performed, the company dropped the charge entirely.

When Budget told Pfeffer that the vehicle had to be sent out for detailing, placing the vehicle out of service, they were padding the bill.

Budget's claim suggests either the company doesn't understand what detailing means, or it's using inflated language to justify inflated charges. I suspect the latter.

How to Protect Yourself from Bogus Car Rental Cleaning Fees If you're renting a car, here's what this case teaches us:

Photograph everything. Take video of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff. Get a shot of the vehicle identification number on the dashboard. If the company later claims your car was filthy, you'll have proof of its actual condition.

Clean before you return. I hate saying this because routine vacuuming should be included in the rental price. But rental companies have shown they'll nickel-anddime customers for floor mat sand.

Spend five minutes at a car wash with a vacuum, or shake out the mats yourself. It beats a $125 surprise charge.

If you have any doubts, request an inspection at drop-off. Don't let the agent wave you off with a "we'll check it later" brush-off.

Insist on a walk-around inspection while you're there. If they find something, you can address it immediately.

Put everything in writing. The Pfeffers tried calling Budget and got disconnected while waiting for a manager. Their emails created a Sand Trap continued on page 12

The Pastor Says . . . The Unexpected We live in a world of the unexpected. While many people say they know what they believe will happen, their days are filled with the certainty of the unexpected. Consider the present religious community, many expect the second coming of Jesus Christ. There is an expectation of his return because he said he would return. His followers have been expecting that for two thousand years. Religious commentators daily say that they expect him to return any day. The more it is said, the greater the following and belief. With some, the expectation is soon, weekly, daily, or any minute. It is a world of expectation. Can we dare challenge it with all those who quote the bible, profess that God Himself reveals to some the date and time? Jesus’ apostles were curious about this and, in expectation, Pastor Huls asked Him when the time would be. But Jesus avoids the problem by telling them only God knows the time. Thus, we have been left with only expectation. Many live with both the expected and unexpected.

The unexpected contains a life of surprises when things happen that we don’t expect, we are amazed. I have heard many people say that they did not expect to live as long as they are living. How long do we expect this world to exist? Many believe it is close to self-destruction and believe our only hope of survival is to restart the human race on Mars. Sad to say, many expect the human race to die out because of declining birth rates gradually, yet the unexpected is happening every day. There are new discoveries of energy sources and income sources, and a rising stock market. I remember the day that experts told us that uranium was a worthless product. The unexpected happened, which is the source of the present Middle Eastern war. Far beyond my expectations is the electric car, GPS in our cell phones, and today, the development of AI, which is a driving force in the stock market. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt set the Social Security retirement age at 65, little did he expect that the largest and fastest-growing population would be in their 90s, with some projecting that, in the foreseeable future, many would be in their hundreds.

Many events and experiences go far beyond the expected. I am sure that people don’t expect getting cancer, having a child die in childbirth, being a victim of a scourging virus, becoming a victim of one of aging maladies, or even accepting Jesus’ many proclamations, “in this world you will have many tribulations.” However, I believe he is talking more about his followers’ suffering than about a general problem in humanity. It is probably wise for us to live with the possibility that the unexpected will occur. We do not live in a world, nor do we have a life of certainties. There is much more adventure in living with life’s uncertainties and the unexpected.

A program I enjoy offers child performers the opportunity to perform before the judges. There are often singers, dancers, or other performances that give the audience an unexpected experience. It is wonderful if we have just a few of those experiences in any area of life that involve the unexpected. It is God’s way of making life exciting and worthwhile.

In 1526, the human population of planet Earth was 500 million. Fast forward 400 years to 1926 and Earth’s human population had quadrupled to 2 billion. Today, a mere 100 years later, Earth’s human population has quadrupled again to 8 billion. Buckminster Fuller’s KDC (Knowledge Doubling Curve) measures the time required for human knowledge to double. For centuries, isolated populations and low literacy rates restricted KDC to about once each century. Then, in the 20th century, the electronics revolution began to change everything. Radio, television, computers and a thousand other devices went to work on the KDC. By1940 the KDC cycle was 40 years, in 1975 only 25 years, by 2000 it was just one year. Today (2026) the human knowledge doubles a dozen times each year.

At the beginning of the 20th cen-

tury, the average human lifespan was somewhat south of 40 years.

Today it has nearly doubled. The scholar is admired for knowledge built through years of “education”.

A craftsman merits the respect of his peers for the expertise earned over years of learning by doing. In truth, both the modern scholar and the craftsman are specialists. Both spend their lives diving deeply into a narrow field of human knowledge.

The human knowledge pool has grown rapidly over the past century to the point were no scholar or craftsman can claim to internalize more than a tiny portion of it. In Plato’s time an educated human could command a significant percentage of human knowledge. Today human knowledge has grown a thousand-fold. If Plato expounded in today’s streets, he would be considered a fool.

Modern medical doctors, lawyers, teachers and scientists are among those who continue to follow the long established tradition of devoting a significant portion of their lives to the process of internalizing an ever-shrinking percentage of the exploding data base associate with their chosen profession. Graduate schools are bigger and more expensive than ever. Anyone who wishes to become credentialed in a profession like law or medicine must endure the multi-year indoctrination process of grad school. Advanced education historically served as the tool to ensure uniformity and

competence in the professions. The grad school credentialing process ensures that standard protocols are observed and uniformity maintained. To spend years internalizing detailed information in support of a profession made perfect sense when the expansion of human knowledge was a long slow process. The rapid exponential increase in the expansion of human knowledge today calls into question this aspect of our advanced education process.

“She’s so routine oriented.”

Our dog starts every day the same.

Cashew wakes up in her dog bed, licks her paws, does an ear flop, then stretches before she stands up and stares at the people bed.

If we don’t move, she hops up and stares at us, then jumps back down.

Still no movement? She leaps up and gets so close we can feel her whiskers against our faces.

One local TV news reporter admitted being sock-shoe – sock-shoe and could not imagine anyone doing it any other way.

Barbara: “Every morning we go downstairs. I open the door. She goes out for a break while I pour my coffee. Then she comes back in and stares at me until I give her breakfast. She might not eat right away, but breakfast has to be in her bowl.”

She is so funny about her routines.

(Cashew, not Barbara.) When she walks upstairs, she starts with her left paw. She sits before I put on her leash. We didn’t teach her this.

She just does it.

“Did you notice that she does the same thing every morning?”

When we leave, she walks past the car door then turns around before she jumps in. Then she sits until I attach the dog seat belt to her harness.

Barbara: “Now that you mention it, she does. That’s her routine.”

Random question. I asked Barbara, “When you put on your shoes and

The City of Vista and EDCO offer free mulch and compost on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of every month.

Buena Vista Park

Hours are from dawn to dusk at the vacant lot located at Vale Terrace Drive and Williamston Street.

Buena Vista Park features 2+ miles of hiking/biking trails. Routes can be customized with distance and elevation. Parts of the trail run alongside Agua Hedionda Creek with shade provided by oak trees, but you can also climb the hill and get a great view of south Vista.

This is a self-serve, self-load, and self-haul event. Residents must use their own containers, gloves, and shovels. If you are hauling mulch in an open truck bed, please bring a tarp. Commercial vehicles are not permitted.

Buena Vista Creek Trail The Buena Vista Creek Trail, located off Hacienda Drive across from the BMW dealership, features wide pathways along a densely packed biological preserve. This short, casual hiking trail can be completed in a few minutes.

La Mirada Canyon La Mirada Canyon is a tranquil path in the middle of Business Park. It features a unique tunnel allowing safe passage under Business Park Drive. Limited vehicle parking can be found on Park Center Drive.

Then came the real surprise: Budget would refund the Pfeffers $162.

Wait, what? Budget had only charged them $125.

The excessive cleaning fee was somehow topped with an unexpected $37 bonus. It seems Budget's accounting department operates with the same "sole discretion" as its cleaning crew. Steve Pfeffer called it a happy ending.
