“Why don’t you deposit it in my bank?” he asked.

“I don’t know what deposit means.”

“Well, you put the money in our bank and we take care of it for you.

When you want to use it you can withdraw it.”

The Amish man leaned across the desk, looking suspiciously at the banker, and asked, “What you got for collateral?” **** My son was just born and another dad at the nursery congratulated me and said his daughter was just born yesterday. “Who knows?” he said, “Maybe they’ll wind up marrying each other!”

Right. Like my son would marry someone twice his age. **** Be sure to send this to your relatives, so they will know what happened to you.

Just read your article lyle in the Paper and had to remember the History of Muslims, starting with what they did in WW2.

At the start of ww2, it was Germany, Japan, Russia, Islam, and Italy on the same side. The World leader of Islam was Haj Amin al Husseini the grand Mufti of Jerusalem the World Leader of Islam from Palestine. President of the Supreme Muslim Council and the President of the Arab Higher Committee for Palestine. He met with Hitler November 28, 1941 and became fast friends. Why is it that minority citizens seem to be hyphenated more than Whites? Example: MexicanAmerican, African-American, Native-American, etc. but not Anglo-American. To me hyphenation appears to be done to divide Americans in a seemingly negative way. Aren’t we supposed to be a “United States” nation? Back in 1968 I managed Dick Clark’s Santa Barbara radio station, KGUD. Dick had arranged for one of the best medical health insurance packages I had ever seen; everything was platinum, gold, with diamonds on top. Only the best.

Came the time when my thenwife, Mary, came down with some type of illness. They couldn’t figure out what was causing the problem in Santa Barbara so we took her to Scripps Clinic in La Jolla . . . the clinic where John Wayne, Liz Taylor, and all of the other top entertainment and political figures would go for medical treatment.

Her room was more like a suite.

Waited on hand and foot - at dinner time, if your health permitted, you even had a glass of wine with your evening meal. If you wished, your spouse could sleep in the room with you. It was almost more like a ritzy hotel than a medical clinic except you had the top physicians of the world studying your case, lab work, etc.

Eventually, they found out what was causing Mary’s problems and solved them. (Time dims the memory so I don’t remember the malady or the successful treatment but I remember how impressed I was with the facilities, the medical staff, and the first class treatment).

I experienced a similar experience at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla a few years ago.

in America (United States), simply be called “American”. If born in another country but became an American be identified as “Mexican-American if born in Mexico, African-American if born in Africa, Anglo-American if born in England, etc. In other words, place the country born in first then followed by “American’’. For those living here legally, or illegally, but not citizens, be called “Unclassified Residents” or simply “Unclassified”. “Alien” or “illegal” is demeaning because unless someone is born outside of our earth no one is an alien if one accepts the definition of the word, and no person on earth is illegal if one believes that God created that person.

If someone is a dual-citizen they would have to make up their minds as to what country they claim for their classification.

I believe majority and very critical parts of the articles, especially the second one about Sharia law are very misinformed. I would love to go into more detail if you would like to schedule some sort of meeting or interview. As a lot of the claims here are inaccurate, if not downright lying or ignorance.

An example i’ll for ignorance, using Bukhari in relation to the Islamic Republic of Iran, Bukhari is a hadith book for the Sunni sect of islam. Which is the majority sect, however Iran is predominantly adhered by the Shia sect of islam, you using bukhari to speak about iran is like using the bible as proof against a hindu. While Iran does have that law, you using bukhari shows a clear lack of information centered around the islamic world, but regardless I would be happy to discuss this with the author in more detail. **** Sharia and Freedom Excellent feature article this week.

It brought into focus the uneasiness many of us feel with Islam’s presence in the modern World.

Many folks are hesitant to address Islam’s brutality because of our reluctance criticize the beliefs of others. Your feature did an excellent job of pointing out the difference between obedience to God and the tyranny of Islam’s religious leaders who claim to mandate divine intent. Good job.

**** I read your two part piece on Sharia law with interest, and I want to push back on it directly rather than just complain.The core argument, that no legal system should place divine authority above constitutional constraint, is a legitimate position with real philosophical grounding.

But the way you built the case has some serious problems.First, you treat Sharia as a single monolithic system when in practice it covers an enormous range, from personal status law in Morocco to criminal codes under the Taliban. Citing the harshest possible applications and presenting them as representative is not analysis, it is selection bias.

Second, several of your examples are criminal acts committed by individuals (Cologne, the grooming gangs, Toulouse) which you fold into an argument about legal systems. Those are not the same category. A crime committed by a Muslim is not evidence of what a legal system called Sharia does when it governs.Third, you apply zero comparative scrutiny to other religious legal traditions. Leviticus and Deuteronomy contain punishments at least as harsh as anything you quoted from the Quran.

If the standard is “religious law becoming coercive state power is dangerous,” that standard should apply evenly, not selectively to one faith.I’d also ask directly: have YOU ever spent time on the ground in a Muslim majority country, whether in the Middle East, North Africa, or Southeast Asia?

A firsthand reckoning with how people actually live under different applications of Islamic law, rather than a reading list built around the worst headlines, would change the texture of this piece considerably.

As written, it reads like a Western media narrative repackaged as analysis, not the product of direct observation or education.Last, there is a real irony in a piece warning so forcefully against concentrated, unaccountable power ending on a note of certainty and no retreat, while offering no acknowledgment that erosion of checks on power is very much a live question in American governance right now, not just a hypothetical tied to a foreign legal tradition.I would genuinely welcome a response, in print or otherwise, addressing these points rather than the general thesis, which in its current form does little except promote Islamophobia. Islam is a rich and beautiful faith, and it deserves better than this kind of treatment.Inshallah, you’ll do better next time - Mike Galt

I had that damned 8mm kidney stone removed via lithotripsy. They go up into your bladder with a tube with a camera, a laser, and a mesh screen. The camera spots the stone, they fire the laser at it and breaks it up into little bitty pieces, the mesh screen collects the remnants and the procedure is done. They send the fragments to pathology for analysis to find out what type of stone you had and what might have caused it (most times it’s diet).

The professionalism of the medical staff was akin to that which we observed at Scripps Clinic; the warmth and genuine caring was clearly evident. These people give a damn about you, their patient! The facility, while maybe not exactly as elegant as Scripps Clinic, comes close. Neat, clean facility, great attention to detail.

Several times I remember reaching up to scratch my nose. “What?!

Are you hurting? Where?” I explained I was in no pain, just had an itch that needed to be scratched.

Do you begin to understand why I LOVE the VA? That organization really takes good care of you.

A couple of idiot managers, chief of which was in the Phoenix area, gave VA a bad name by shoddy management that actually caused a number of veterans to die while waiting for treatment.

Folks . . . that ain’t the case generally within VA. They are doing everything they can to deliver top notch medical service.

My only regret about the experience is that I agreed to accept spinal anesthesia instead of general anesthesia. The administration of the spinal injection was simple and painless . . . but then the numbness comes in - from your toes up to about your mid chest area . . . then you go to sleep. But when you wake up you absolutely cannot wiggle your toes, move your feet or your legs . . . you feel your thighs and they feel like a hippo’s thighs (much like the sensation when the dentist numbs your jaw; it feels bigger than it is). I HATE that feeling!

I now understand what paralyzed patients have to experience - hope I never suffer that type of injury.

Took over two hours for the spinal medication to work it’s way out of my system.

Had a rough night sleeping, having to urinate every half hour till about 4am. Finally, took some cannabis oil and slept like a baby from 4am to 8am - then felt about 90%.

So, I’m BAAAAAAACK! And it looks like you might be stuck with me for awhile Now perhaps life can be fun again.

“Really? It looks like it just came off the showroom floor. And it’s a 20 year old car?”

It is, indeed . . and I love it.

Drives like a dream. Just had it detailed by Pars Auto in Escondido (207 E. Valley Parkway). Superior job! That’s why it looks so nice and draws compliments. Dropped it off at 9am, got it back at 4pm the same day, all shiny and spotless, all buffed out. I love the folks at Pars Auto. They know their stuff. They handled a major mechanical problem for me about a month ago - job was done quickly and at a more than reasonable price. ****

I used to be a scuba diver . . . have dived Tahiti, Hawaii, The Channel Islands (off the coast of California) and, of course, beach diving off of San Diego and Santa Barbara.

As you will see, it is a totally different world underwater. Boat diving is a lot easier, beach diving, not so much. Probably an hour to an hour and a half’s work for every hour underwater. Unloading equipment from the car, walking, sometimes climbing, down cliffs to get to the beach, putting on your gear, swimming out to deep water, making the dive, swimming back in, taking off your gear, carrying it all back UP the cliffs (coming down a cliff with lots of gear is tough ... try it after you’re tired from diving and all the other work and going uphill . . . .) stowing it all in the car, driving home, and then washing down all the equipment with fresh water to get rid of any residual salt water.

Still, the underwater journey was often worth all the effort.

However, on board a boat, you jump on the boat, drop your tanks, sit back and relax during the boat ride, dress up, load your tanks, sink down into the water, dive, come back up, recharge your tanks . . . drive again . . . much, much easier.

Caution: divers, including me, have been known to get seasick. We had one boat dive scheduled and we were diverted from Cortez Banks, due to rough weather, to the lee side of San Clemente Island. I got seasick . . . but as soon as we were on station, I put on my tanks and went overboard. Peace! As long as I was in the water, no upset tummy!

I made three or four dives that day (normally, not a good idea. Too much diving, even at depths of only 30-40 feet, is not good for your body, lungs, and blood circulatory system . . . but I was young and super healthy). I made that many dives that day because (a) it was fun, and (b) while in the water, I did **** not get seasick. On board the boat, while waiting for the compressors Was at a stoplight today and a to recharge my air tanks I would neighboring motorist said, “that’s get queasy and/or sick. By the end a nice Honda Accord; what year is of the dive-day, the sea had settled it?” down and so did my stomach.

5th District Supervisor • Jim Desmond Your Money, Your Rules, Your Vote

Last Thursday’s Board of Supervisors meeting came down to one question. Are we spending your money the way you would spend it?

Too often, the answer was no.

Start with the budget. The Board ad-

opted a $9.1 billion spending plan, and I voted yes. There is real value in it. $98 million more for public safety, including sheriff services, jail improvements, and opioid enforcement. New staffing for water tender trucks and the night-flying helicopter. The LA fires reminded us what mobile water means when homes are on the line. We protected libraries, parks, road repairs, and swim lessons that keep kids from drowning.

No $9 billion budget is perfect.

This one puts public safety first, so it earned my vote.

But I put my objections on the record, and you deserve to hear them.

WHAT CAN WHAT IS AN OUT-OF-BODY CAUSE OBE? EVENT OR EXPERIENCE? Out-of-body experiences (OBE) is a recognised phenomenon during which a person experiences leaving their physical body, often perceiving the physical world around them – sometimes seeing themselves below from a different angle or height.

OBE is an unexplained phenomenon that has intrigued and fascinated humanity for centuries, permeating not only the scientific community but also inspiring folklore, mythology, as well as spiritual and religious beliefs.

One particular form of OBE is called Near Death Experience or NDE. As its name implies, NDE may be triggered when an individual experiences a near-death event (which many combat soldiers have recorded), as well as from cardiac arrest survivors, to cite just two examples.

NDE can also trigger an out-of-body experience when a patient “flatlines” on the operating table or is momentarily considered to be “brain dead.” Often the patient alleges to

Then there is the Charter measure headed to your November ballot. I voted no.

It is being sold as transparency and accountability. Read what is actually inside. It extends Supervisor term limits from two terms to three.

In 2010, 68% of you voted for the two-term limit. That reform came from the people. This one comes from the politicians. All five of us ran knowing the rules. Changing them from inside office is wrong, and sitting Supervisors should be flatly barred from a third term.

The measure also lets the Board reach into hiring and firing for more than 600 manager positions. That turns merit-based county jobs into political ones. You should get a county job because you are qualified, not because you know the right people.

Self-service fatigue hits travel: Why are we having a DIY backlash?

BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT Judy Williams’ recent flight from Seattle to Billings, Mont., was a painful lesson in self-service fatigue. She stood in two lines at the airport to drop a single checked bag. Then the machine rejected it — again and again.

The insult wasn’t the glitchy kiosk. It was the three employees nearby who ignored her.

“They were engaged in a personal conversation and hugging,” says Williams, an attorney from Billings.

That’s the reality of DIY travel: You do the unpaid work. When the system fails, you’re on your own.

Williams finally got the machine to ingest her luggage. She complained.

“They apologized,” she says.

“Big deal.”

But it is a big deal.

The Pastor Speaks . . . Good Luck One of the more favorite expressions we hear when we are engaging in a venture is “good luck.” It is used when we step out of the certainties of life.

Somehow, it seems to give confidence to the venture. I don’t know Pastor Huls if we would use it just before a delicate operation or before a marriage.

It does appear that at least some people feel there is some validity to the expression simply because so many people use it.

I don’t use it anymore because of its uncertainty.

Is there any guarantee that luck, either good or bad, has certainty in it? In fact, certain Christian religious groups seek to eliminate its usage with their adherents. This has been recent, but it is not because of this that I don’t use it. It is just that I would like to offer something more certain in my departing words or an expression of benevolence to those I am sharing with.

We might ask whether someone ever said it to us, and whether there was ever a positive or lucky result from the expression on our behalf. How would we evaluate that?

As I think of this expression, it reminds me of a very successful businessman friend I was talking to about luck. He said, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

It wasn’t that he never had a problem or that his business didn’t have difficulties. It was just that he wasn’t going to leave it all to chance, the element of luck. We use that expression a lot when there are near misses, when fortune smiles on us, such as winning the lottery, or when we get the right lottery scratcher. But is it luck when we don’t get sick, or when some misfor-

tune doesn’t befall us, or is it planning, caution, and thinking ahead? Our physical condition is not luck.

It is what we eat, how much we exercise, and how much we avoid indulgences. We could well add to this list how we think. If our thoughts concentrate on what bad things might befall us rather than how we think all things in the universe are there to benefit and bless us, we will avoid much that befalls us.

Many with whom I discuss this subject offer a wide variety of answers to the question of what luck is.

Looking back through history, I found that the preChristian Romans personified luck as fortune. You were lucky if fortune smiled on you. The Greeks had a goddess, Tyche. She determined a city’s prosperity or an individual’s fortune. They were not willing to believe that everything was random or just a matter of chance; they did believe that we human beings had a part to play in our destiny.

In some ways, this is the way it is in our world today. We have moved beyond fate and fortune. There is, of course, much mystery to life that transcends our input and control. Within our grasp are forces which we can use, and our personal involvement and responsibility are ever with us. It is true that the harder we work and the more preparation we put into responsibilities, the more favorable life will be. I had a friend who lived with the motto, ‘whatever it will be, it will be.’ It is easier to accept that whatever happens is the way it should be, and yet we can believe, in a religious sense, that all things are in the hands of God, and that He responds to the prayers of us human beings. There are conditions for prayer: it has to be directed to His way and will.

While the expression “good luck” is common, I have found more power in the expression, “May God bless you.”

Late last month Lyle Davis announced the sale of “The Paper” to Roadrunner Publications. Roadrunner will take over in November. We have been a part of this publication since 1995 when Bill Willoughby owned it. In those days it was called “The News Reporter”. Lyle bought it in 1998 and renamed it “The Paper”. We have continued to write our weekly column for over 30 years. In January of this year Nome and I decided that 2026 would be our last year as owners of The Computer Factory.

In 1964 I met Nome at Belden Corporation in Richmond, Indiana. Nome was a “timekeeper”

and I was an “Industrial Engineer”.

We married in 1965 and started our family. Over the next thirty years we owned homes in Indiana, Florida, Minnesota, Canada and California. We grew our family and careers in computer manufacturing divisions of Packard Bell, United Telecom, NCR and Westinghouse.

With our four children grown and on their own, in 1995 we said goodbye to our corporate jobs and opened The Computer Factory in San Marcos, CA. In 1995 fewer than 10% of homes were Internet connected.

Today over 95% of American homes have high speed Internet access. Since the introduction of the IW (intelligent web) a quarter century ago, PCs have slowly lost their place as stand-alone workstations, instead becoming Internet terminals. It is faster and less costly to run applications on high capacity, high speed Internet servers than to purchase these programs for individual computers. Over the next ten years we will probably see the implementation of “quantum” computing and the gradual disappearance of today’s PC operating systems. Our customers will need help with this transition.

Over the past quarter century nearly everyone in the Western World has come to accept the re-

ality that AI (artificial Intelligence) and the IW (Intelligent Web) are an integral part of modern living.

From our children’s education, our home life and our workplace, computer based AI and the IW are now part of lives. Today technology is growing and changing at breakneck speed. It is difficult to keep up, especially for most of the 45 year old and up users who were already adults when the AI/IW combination was born in 2001. For the last 30 years much of our job here at The Computer Factory has been to help older PC users stay current in the rapidly changing world of information technology and equipment.

The Dog Days of Summer There are plenty of reasons to celebrate pets and their people during the coming month.

The Dog Days of Summer run from July 3rd through August 11th when the “Dog Star,” Sirius, rises in conjunction with the Sun. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky.

When Sirius rose along with the sun, ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians believed it caused hot summer weather. That’s why they called them The Dog Days, even though it was about the Dog Star, not dogs.

July 11th is Slurpee Day. From 11 AM to 7 PM, participating 7-Elevens will give away free Slurpees. I mentioned Slurpee Day to one of my friends at Rancho Coastal Humane Society. She said “Every day is Slurpee Day at my house! That’s how my dog wakes me up!”

July 20th is Global Hug Your Kid Day. Some of our kids have paws and fur. They need hugs, too. We need their hugs as much as they need ours.

The 21st Annual Cardiff Dog Days of Summer is coming up on Sunday, August 2nd from 10 AM to 3 PM at Encinitas Community Park. That’s the park you see from Southbound I-5, between the Santa Fe and Birmingham exits.

This is a fun event with contests for dogs and their people, including Best-looking, Best-trick, Lookalike, Ice Cream Eating, etc.

Lots of booths filled with products for dogs and the people who love them. And there’s food (for dogs and people.)

It’s free and family friendly. You don’t need a dog to attend. There will be plenty of dogs to pet. And there will be dogs available for adoption on Rescue Row. If your

dog doesn’t do well in crowds or with other dogs, please leave it home.

By the way, July 25th is National Water Gun Fight Day. Most dogs enjoy a cool, refreshing water squirt. After all, these are The Dog Days of Summer.

Rental scams: what every renter should know

Every year, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office sees an increase in reports involving fraudulent rental listings that cost victims thousands of dollars and expose sensitive personal information.

In part, it’s due to the summertime increase of students, families, and workers searching for new housing opportunities. During this heightened time of increased searching is exactly when scammers work overtime to exploit the competitive rental market.

Rental scams have become increasingly sophisticated. Criminals often pose as landlords, property

managers, or homeowners and advertise fake or real properties on popular rental websites and social media platforms. Their goal is simple: pressure victims into sending money quickly before they realize the listing is part of a scam.

In many cases, the advertised property either does not exist, is not actually for rent, or has been copied from a legitimate online listing without the owner’s knowledge.

The emotional and financial damage can be devastating, especially for students, seniors, military families, and individuals who are urgently seeking housing in a tight

rental market.

Here is what consumers should be aware of, so they do not fall victim to a renal scam.

• The rent is significantly lower than similar properties in the area.

• The “landlord” refuses to meet in person, via video chat, or allow an in-person viewing.

• You are pressured to act immediately to avoid losing the property.

• You are asked to send deposits before seeing the unit.

• Payment is requested through Zelle, gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

• The listing photos or descrip-

tions appear duplicated from other online ads.

• The person renting the property claims to be out of town or unavailable.

Consumers should never feel rushed into making housing decisions. Scammers often create false urgency to prevent victims from verifying information or asking questions.

Before sending money or signing any agreement, renters should independently verify the property address, research ownership records when possible, and confirm that the

taking in the lovely sights when I noticed Carl was having some difficulty . . . he began to struggle. I went over to him and could see that he was having some problems with his mouthpiece and air tubes . . . he wasn’t getting enough air . . . or their was a leaky hose, letting water get into his mouth and/or lungs . . . I, with hand signals, calmed him down. I ‘buddy breathed” him to the surface (I’d breathe, then give him my mouthpiece and let him breathe my air, then back to me, then back to him . . . all the while slowly ascending to the surface. It was important for Carl not to panic because there’s a natural tendency to hold your breath when you’re under water and have trouble getting air from your air tanks. That is what you must NOT do! You’re breathing compressed air so as your rise the air in your lungs expands and can cause what is known as a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) and it can kill you. You also tend to want to ascend to the

surface rapidly. Again, the wrong thing to do! That just expands the air more quickly and with greater force, likely to do more damage. To his credit, he did not panic and we managed to get to the surface safely and then swim back to shore, using our snorkels.

It scared him, though. He and I never went diving again. I don’t know if he ever did go scuba diving again. Perhaps not. It was a frightening experience. (Once on the beach we examined the equipment and, sure enough, Carl’s rental gear did have a tear in one of his breathing tubes.)

He had told me he had scuba dived . . .so, when he came to visit us in California, I scheduled a beach drive from La Jolla Cove just off of La Jolla, Ca. It’s a beautiful place . . . and a popular dive spot.
