She glanced at the two boxes of ammo, bent over and leaned in my passenger window, and said in a sexy voice, “I’m a big believer in barter, old fella. Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?

‘I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours’. *** Life in the Fast Lane I’m just a plain ol’ country boy who happened to grow up in a city - and I never really knew what the Fast Lane of Life was.

A number of years ago I was managing KOWN Radio in Escondido, CA., and one of the owners and his wife invited me to their home in Encino, CA., a very upscale suburb of LA. They were, of course, quite wealthy.

While there we met at their kitchen breakfast nook and snacked.

They had this delicious dish of Philadelphia Cream Cheese, covered with caviar.

I was starving and munched away and munched away ... at the Cream Cheese . . . and caviar.

It was only recently that I discovered that caviar sells for around $150 an ounce! I must have eaten two ounces myself! Delicious! But very, very expensive.

Not sure I endeared myself to my hosts. *** Do you know why cute people are always busy?

I’ll tell you later. I’m very busy. *** Every woman’s dream is that a man will take her in his arms, throw her into bed, and clean the whole house while she sleeps. *** I woke up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, and I noticed a radical jihadist terrorist with a large knife sneaking through my next door neighbor’s garden toward his house.

Suddenly, my neighbor came from out of nowhere and smacked him over the head with a shovel, killing him instantly. He then dug a grave and put the body in it and covered it. I watched him with binoculars for several hours.

Astonished, I got back into bed.

I could not sleep, so I called one of my sons, who said, “What’s up, Dad? You sound upset.”

“I am. You’ll never believe what I just saw!” I said. “My next door neighbor still has my shovel that he borrowed last year!”

Calling all Caballeros!

Recently, while tidying up my desk and files I came across a folder with a lot of information from Los Caballeros de Aventura, the youth diversion program I founded back in the late 1990’s early 2000.

I came across the names of a number of kids I would like to get in touch with . . . just to see how their lives turned out and to see if they need any help.

Most of these names are, I think, from San Marcos. They were then, dunno if they’re still there or not. If you are one of these “kids” or know one of them, please have them get in touch with me, either here on Facebook or at thepaper@cox.net The “kids” . . .

Epifanio emigrated as a young boy after watching his mom die a painful death from facial cancer; later, his dad got in trouble with the law (meth) and went to prison for 14 years; he had two sisters, Maria, who cared for him, and another sister, Christina, who helped out.

We took Epi flying one day and he had a grin from ear to ear and after his flight he said to me, “Mr. Davis I’ll never forget this day! Never!”

After so much heartache this kid had endured it was great to see him with a great big smile and enjoying life for a change.

I’d like to think life smoothed out for him . . .he had more than his share of pain and trouble. Sorry, I don’t have his last name. Was from either San Marcos or Escondido.

Don’t remember which . . it’s been over 20 years since I’ve sen most of these kids.

Took Mary for a manicure last week; I got a manicure and pedicure. Went to one of the newer, large nail salons.

Elegant. Lots of glitter, lights, classy look. And expensive.

Both Mary and I just got a basic manicure and pedicure; $22 and $32 respectively. The service was only okay.

What was frustrating is every manicurist there did not speak or understand English. Almost all were Vietnamese.

I love the Vietnamese. I spent two years in Vietnam as a civilian war correspondent; got to know the people, their culture, their foods.

This legacy as well as other organisations – which were all designed to keep young children away from gang violence, drugs, and even death – all resulted in CBS TV 8 sending a mobile news team to Escondido to interview lyle e. davis, an interview which would be broadcast multiple times on CBS and its affiliate channels!

As chronicled in a front-cover story I wrote, titled “North San Diego County People Whose Acts of

Kindness Saved Lives!” – I mailed a newspaper copy to popular news icon, Mr. Jeff Zevely at CBS TV 8.

The story related how lyle e. davis would plan, orchestrate, and set into motion all the official and legal protocols to officially create and introduce the North County Youth Soccer Association (NCYSA), headquartered in Escondido.

In his own words, lyle davis takes us back to that historic, milestone year and the birth of the North County Youth Soccer Association which grew from a vision to an officiallyformed corporation on 9 April 1976 -- over 50 years ago today.

As lyle e. davis reflects: “I put together a great board of directors, which included folks who did know soccer . . . we pulled together coaches, referees, ground crews, parent support-groups, and we made the North County Youth Soccer Association (NCYSA) . . . headquartered in Escondido.

“I contacted the late John Smylie, an attorney from San Marcos. He put together Articles of Incorporation . . . and did all the legal work necessary to give birth to a young soccer

association – The NCYSA. “I recruited my next door neighbour, Rolf Krause, who knew soccer; having grown up in Germany; another fella from Argentina whose name I have forgotten, but he, too, knew soccer.

“First year we had 175 players . . . second year 550, third year 935. After that year we had to limit recruitment to 1200 kids . . . only because we had run out of soccer fields!

More kids wanted to play but we simply didn’t have enough fields . . . and so it expanded to San Marcos, Vista, Carlsbad, and Ocaanside!

“I retired as founding president after three years. But the NCYSA continued to grow.”

San Diego’s Summer Movies in the Park

A current list of this summer’s movies can be found here.

Movies typically begin about 15 minutes after the sun sets. Families and folk are encouraged to wear warm clothes and bring blankets as the weather can turn chilly when the sun goes down. Pre-show activities begin before dark.

5th District Supervisor • Jim Desmond The State keeps dumping its most dangerous offenders on San Diego County—That has to end A judge has once again allowed the State of California to place a sexually violent predator into one of our San Diego County communities. The man has already been moved in. My office was notified only after the fact. No meaningful say, no real warning, no consent from the community that now has to live with him. And if you think this is someone else’s problem, in someone else’s town, I’m writing to tell you that you are wrong.

Let me be clear about what we are talking about. Under California law, a sexually violent predator is a person who has been convicted of a sexually violent offense against one or more victims and who has been diagnosed with a mental disorder that makes them likely to offend again. This is not a technicality or a gray area. It is the state’s own classification for its most dangerous sexual offenders.

The man placed this time is Gary Snavely, who was convicted of molesting two young girls, ages 8 and 9, and who was later returned to a state hospital after violating the terms of his release. That is the kind of offender the State is quietly moving into residential neighborhoods, near families and near children.

In Dane White’s run for mayoral office, I pooled the grassroots support of many of my contemporaries, many in college and/or university, many as burgeoning business folk, some as young entrepreneurs – all coalesced to make our voices heard and valued and efficacious.

And to prove we have strength in numbers and our votes are not to be taken for granted by the older establishments.

And here is what every resident of this county needs to understand.

This is not a one-time event, and it is not confined to one town. Time and again, the State releases these offenders into San Diego County, and time and again the same kinds of communities are chosen: small, remote, working-class neighborhoods with the least political power to push back. The logic is cynical and obvious. The State goes where it expects the least resistance. But make no mistake, if the State can force one of these predators into one community with no local consent, it can do it in yours.

No neighborhood in this county is exempt.

I want residents to know that their County government has not been silent. Years ago, I led the Board of Supervisors in taking a formal stand, and we voted unanimously, Republicans and Democrats alike, to oppose every future sexually violent predator placement in San Diego County until state law is changed to give local communities a real voice, including the power to say no. I said it then and I will say it again: I would not vote to put a sexually violent predator next door to my family, and I will not vote to put

one next door to yours.

But here is the hard truth, and residents deserve to hear it plainly.

The County has no legal authority over where these predators are placed. That power rests entirely with the State of California. Sacramento wrote this law. A state program and its private contractor select the homes. Judges sign off on them. And our communities are simply told to live with the consequences. This is happening for one reason, and one reason only: the State is allowing it to happen.

Every family in San Diego County deserves the same protection. Every community deserves a voice in a decision this serious.

These are our neighborhoods, our children, and our safety, and right now the State treats all of it as an afterthought, a box to check on the way to releasing someone it has already labeled among the most dangerous in California.

I am not going to let this go.

But I cannot fix a broken state law from the County Administration Center, and neither can your local officials. This has to be fixed in Sacramento. So I am asking every resident who reads this to contact your state senator and your assemblymember and demand two

Each year, this event gives us the opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been, celebrate the progress we’ve made and look ahead to the future of San Marcos.

For those who were unable to join us, here’s a quick recap of what was shared.

The state of our city isn’t defined by one new building or one major project. It’s defined by a city that keeps its promises, takes care of what it has, plans ahead and, perhaps most importantly, continues to feel like home.

Those principles guide every decision we make as we continue investing in the priorities you told us matter most: parks and community spaces, streets and infrastructure and public safety.

However, Lawrence Welk did not anticipate public reaction which positioned itself against him! Ensuing fan mail, overwhelmingly, demanded that Alice Lon be re-

Lawrence Welk died in 1992 at age 89. Despite his faux pas in firing his Champagne Lady in front of a live audience, he soon experienced a resurgence in popularity on television re-runs, even long after his death.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Pastor Huls Over the years, people have asked me many questions. They have covered just about every subject.

They have included religious, economic, political, moral, social, and even personal. Perhaps it is because ministers are supposed to have the answers. That is how it used to be. In the early days of American history, the clergy were the educated ones, so people naturally went to them. A very recent question asked of me was, “What are we going to do with all the homeless people?”

That is a valid question because that population is growing faster than communities can handle.

I would like to approach it from a different viewpoint.

First of all, I would like to ask, who are the homeless people? The answer, of course, would be those without a home. Then we have to define what a home is. Is a Native American teepee a home? Is a cardboard box a home?

Is an automobile a home? Is a shanty a home? Occasionally, I do an air balloon ride over the canyons and see many structures occupied by dozens of people. Are they living in homes?

Advertisements by the hundreds claim that there are new homes for sale. Yet, no one is living in them.

Is it simply that there are no people in them? If we put a human being in these buildings, would we say they have a home? Perhaps we need to identify where we are. Is it possible that we are all homeless because we are not in a home? Like the people in the street, we are wandering, looking for a home. Yes, we have temporary shelters, some costing millions, others a makeshift shelter made out of scraps. We don’t call either one home because they are just temporarily occupied, regardless of material and cost. No matter how hard we try to make it permanent, it is never ours.

When we ask about the homeless problem, we are asking it of ourselves. In reality, as the song goes, “This world is not my home, I am just passing through.” There is nothing permanent about our residence.

Basically, we are homeless, really no different than that person on the street.

The difference is that some are a little more sophisticated. The answer is, we all need a home.

I turn you to the Bible, which says in 1 Peter 1:17 that we have only a stay on earth. There is nothing permanent about our being here. It is a homeless existence with only temporary shelters. Jesus tells us that he will prepare a place for us; if He is going to do that, He must mean that what we have is not permanent.

We return to the question, “What do we do with the homeless?” It is, at best, only a temporary condition for any of us. This is not to say that there shouldn’t be care and provision for those who don’t share in temporary shelters, such as the majority do. We are our brother’s keeper. As citizens of this world, we can encourage those who have made their temporary homes to realize that where they are living is not their home because God has a better place for them. With teaching, training, and a renewed sense of awareness, they can find their way by faith and discipline to a permanent home.

San Diego Humane Society is supporting families and their pets who need a little extra help.

Through the Community Pet Pantry, anyone can visit our campuses to pick up a bag of dog or cat food, and other supplies, as available.

No appointment is needed for this service. Hours are Tuesday-Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

This all might sound a bit Pollyannaish, but the reality is we humans are not permanent. At least the Bible teaches us that there is eternal life and a place for us to live it.

IQs, Artificial intelligence and the Intelligent Web It began in late 2001 when the AI (Artificial Intelligence) stoked IW (intelligent Web) was released.

It built its influence over us slowly. Today, a quarter century later, the massive changes the IW is causing in the lives of Earth’s human population are starting to be recognized.

The IW is changing nearly everything yet many of us have been slow to comprehend its impact. Those born after 1995 (DNs or Digital Natives) grew up with the extensive worldwide knowledge base of the IW and its ever improving AI. DNs are

We are plowing new ground.

Man has never before been in the presence of a superior intelligence on his home turf.

Will our IQs decline as we rely ever more heavily on the intellectual resources of our creation? What will happen to occupations that historically rely upon extensively educated men and women like lawyers, medical doctors, engineers and yes even educators. Will we use our new AI/IW technology to rise ever higher intellectual planes or will we become shuffling drones that allow the IW/AI to do our thinking for us? The jury is still out!

Memories of Traveling With Kids and Pets One of my daughters recently went on a road trip with her husband and their sons. My son in law usually drives, but he’s recovering from foot surgery, so my daughter drove.

They got an early start. The first thing she noticed was that her guys all went back to sleep. The soft snores of her husband and sons that are comforting at home weren’t so much fun while she drove.

Our conversation turned to the road trips we took with our dog when my kids were little. We have wonderful memories of those trips. We agreed that the memories are probably better than the trips were.

My daughter had no idea about the planning that went into a trip with kids and critters. She knows now. For example, even going to visit family, we had to make sure our kids and dog would be welcome.

There could be several reasons your pets and children might not be welcome. Allergies.

Illnesses. Homeowners Association rules.

It might have nothing to do with you. They’re

in the middle of a remodel or recovering from an illness.

We were thinking about stopping to visit friends along our travel route. When we called, they said, “My kids are horrible. They’re all grounded. But please stop by during your next trip.”

Ask. Do not assume that your kids and pets will be welcome.

Traveling with your kids and pets can be a wonderful bonding opportunity. It was three in the morning. I was driving and my son kept me company while his Mom and sisters slept. He was ten. We started talking about the songs on the radio then moved from one thing to another.

Things we wouldn’t have talked about at any other time. That was 40 years ago. I cherish that memory.

My daughters remember shorter trips to visit Grandma and Grandpa with our dog, Henry.

Henry made the trips go faster. Instead of watching the clock and odometer, we paid attention to Henry.

“Dad, Henry’s hungry. I think he needs to pee. Henry looks like he’s gonna barf. When we stop, can Henry have his own hamburger? Why does Henry have hairy hands?”

Forty years later, when my family gets together, someone still asks “Why did Henry have hairy hands?”

It was worth taking him along, if only for that memory.

Now retired, Charlie has passed the torch onto the most capable hands of his daughter Susie Meleka (nee Susan Mitich) along with her husband, Bill Meleka. Both Susie and husband Bill are popular with Charlie’s Restaurant customers who keep coming back – not just for the fantastic food – but also for the way both Susie and Bill make everyone feel like members of their own family.

And it is, in fact, like a family-run business: Susie often bakes the pies for the restaurant – how’s that for being ‘home spun’? But she and Bill run the full gamut that such a hugely-popular enterprise demands.

And they do it all . . . with great smiles on their faces, often greeting customers personally and cheerfully, and making sure they are seated, and always properly served, and made to feel at home.

My editor, lyle e. davis, was honoured at Charlie’s Restaurant when they named a breakfast Special after him, simply called “Lyle’s Special.”

by Charlie’s tall, handsome son-inlaw Bill Meleka, Susie’s husband (both run the restaurant since Charlie’s retirement).

There was a different look on Bill’s face as he approached me and told me the news: “Charlie passed away,” he said gently.

Back 2 School Artful Start returns Saturday The California Center for the Arts, Escondido (CCAE) is helping families kick off the new school year with creativity, community, and plenty of free resources during its 3rd annual Back 2 School Artful Start event on Saturday, August 1, noon to 3 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. It is designed to help local students head back to the classroom with the supplies, confidence, and support they need for a successful school year.

One of the day’s most anticipated offerings is free haircuts for as many students as possible throughout the three-hour event, provided by La Receta Barbershops and Valentine Studios. Families are encouraged to arrive early, as haircuts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Inside the CCAE Museum, guests will receive free admission and have the opportunity to explore the CCAE’s current exhibitions while participating in a guided museum workbook designed especially for young learners. The interactive activity encourages students to look closely, ask questions, and discover how art can inspire creativity and critical thinking before they head back to school.

Just steps away in the Concert Hall Art Studios, children can create their very own decorated canvas pencil pouch to use throughout the school year. This is made possible through the support of Raising Cane’s, giving students a fun and creative way to personalize an everyday school essential.

The first 200 students through the doors will receive a free backpack, donated by Mershop Mall, packed with an assortment of school and art supplies. Thanks to OOLY, students will receive colorful art materials including paint sets, gel pens, notebooks, sharpeners, pencils, pens, and other creative tools to help inspire learning throughout the year. Backpacks will include free meal vouchers donated by Wienerschnitzel and Best Pizza & Brew.

Families are also invited to visit the Resource Center and Cool Zone inside the CCAE’s Cal Club. This will feature new clothing donated by Sheria’s Closet, free giveaways from Raising Cane’s, information about CCAE’s year-round programs, and a comfortable place to relax and cool off.

“Back 2 School Artful Start is about more than school supplies,” said Candice Cleland, community relations specialist for the CCAE. “It’s about making sure every child begins the school

year feeling supported, encouraged, and excited to learn while introducing families to the arts and community resources available right here in Escondido.”

Backpacks and several activities are available while supplies last.
