Since her disappearance, Amelia Earhart has become a global cultural figure and numerous films, documentaries, and books have recounted her life.

Forty four years ago, in 1982, the U.S. Congress issued a joint resolution which authorized the U.S. President to officially declare “Amelia Earhart Day” in America to celebrate her historic record-setting accomplishments as a pioneer aviatrix, adventurer, journalist, best-selling author, and nurse.

A longtime admirer of Amelia Earhart, President Ronald Reagan signed the Presidential Proclamation No. 4943 officially establishing “Amelia Earhart Day” which is celebrated annually on 24 July in commemoration of her birthday.

They called it a high school reunion. **** I’m working on some country songs.

Titles come pretty easy . . . it’s the lyrics that stymie me a bit. So far, I’ve come up with: “If You Don’t Leave Me Alone I’ll Go And Find Someone Else Who Will.”

“You Stuck My Heart In an Old Tin Can and Shot It Off a Log” **** The bishop decided that he would conduct the interviews personally and went up into the belfry to begin the screening process.

After observing several applicants demonstrate their skills, he had decided to call it a day.

Just then, an armless man approached him and announced that he was there to apply for the bell ringer’s job. The bishop was incredulous.

‘You have no arms !’

‘No matter,’ said the man. ‘Observe !’

And he began striking the bells with his face, producing a beautiful melody on the carillon. The bishop listened in astonishment; convinced he had finally found a replacement for Quasimodo.

But suddenly, as he rushed forward to strike the bell, the armless man tripped and plunged headlong out of the belfry window to his death in the

street below.

The stunned bishop rushed down two hundred and ninety five church steps, when he reached the street, a crowd had gathered around the fallen figure, drawn by the beautiful music they had heard only moment before.

As they silently parted to let the bishop through, one of them asked, ‘Bishop, who was this man ?’..

‘I don’t know his name,’ the bishop sadly replied, (... Wait for it ...) ‘ .................... BUT HIS FACE RINGS A BELL’ WAIT ! WAIT ! There’s more The following day, despite the sadness that weighed heavily on his heart due to the unfortunate death of the armless campanologist, the bishop continued his interviews for the bell ringer of Notre Dame.

The first man to approach him said, ‘Your Excellency, I am the brother of the poor armless wretch that fell to his death from this very belfry yesterday.

I pray that you honor his life by allowing me to replace him in this duty.’

The bishop agreed to give the man an audition, and, as the armless man’s brother stooped to pick up a mallet to strike the first bell, he groaned, clutched at his chest, twirled around, and died on the spot.

Two monks, hearing the bishop’s cries of grief at this second tragedy, rushed up the stairs to his side.

‘What has happened ? Who is this man ?’ the first monk asked breathlessly.

‘I don’t know his name,’ sighed the distraught bishop, ‘but....’ (. . . Wait for it ....)

Many years ago, I married a widow out of love who had an 18 year old daughter.

After the wedding, my father, a widower, came to visit a number of times, and he fell in love with my step daughter.

My father eventually married her without my authorization.

As a result my step-daughter became my step mother and my father became my son in law.

My father’s wife (also my step daughter) and my step-mother, gave birth to a son who is my grandchild because I am the husband of my step daughter’s mother.

This boy is also my brother, as the son of my father.

As you can see, my wife became a grandmother, because she is the mother of my father’s wife.

Therefore it appears that I am also my wife’s grandchild.

A short time after these events, my wife gave birth to a son, who became my father’s brother-in-law, the stepson of my father’s wife, and my uncle.

My son is also my step mother’s brother, and through my step-mother, my wife has become a grandmother and I have become my own grandfather.

In light of the above mentioned, I would like to know the following: Does my son, who is also my uncle, my father’s son-in-law and my step mother’s brother fulfil the requirements

Travel companies say their customers are no-shows -- but are they?

On a recent flight from San Francisco to Paris, Dan Skilken was a no-show.

It wasn’t his fault. The first leg of his flight to Denver was delayed by weather. His airline rebooked him on another flight to Paris, but someone pushed the wrong button, and the airline believed he had missed his connecting flight.

“We figured it out when I went online to check our return reservation while in France and discovered we had no tickets,” he recalls.

Airlines automatically cancel your reservation when you miss a leg of your flight.

Fortunately, Skilken is no newbie. He runs a travel insurance website and understands the ins and outs of the travel industry. He talked to an airline representative in Paris, who quickly restored his tickets. The European Union last week agreed to bar airlines from canceling your return ticket or charging extra when you miss an outbound leg, though the change isn’t expected to take effect until next year.

It would be easy to dismiss his problem as a oneoff, but I can’t. I’ve been seeing more “no-show” cases lately -- and many cost travelers dearly because they have to pay for new tickets or hotel rooms. It’s made some skeptical travelers wonder if travel companies aren’t using “no shows” as a way to generate a little extra cash.

“No-shows are a bigger issue than people think,” says Brian Raffio, a senior travel coordinator for a tour operator that specializes in Africa. “Not only is it a logistical nightmare, but it holds significant revenue implications.”

Raffio says travelers don’t understand that companies such as airlines, cruise lines and tour operators are not selling a physical product, but a specific date and time to use that product. They can’t resell it once the time passes.

But are no-shows also an opportunity for the travel industry to make more money?

Are some no-shows nonsense?

Sometimes, travel companies get no-shows wrong, and it’s an error that I’ve seen a lot lately.

Consider what happened to Teresa McGee recently when she flew from Detroit to Charlotte on American Airlines. McGee, a caregiver from Matthews, N.C., flew her outbound trip with-

out incident. But when she tried to fly home, an agent told her she didn’t have a ticket.

“They couldn’t give me a reason,” McGee recalls.

Eventually, she found out that American had incorrectly labeled her a “no-show” -- even though she had a boarding pass that proved she’d flown the first leg of her flight.

“I tried to explain this to American Airlines numerous times,” she says.

The airline told her she had to buy a new ticket for $572, which she did. But then it refused to refund her original ticket, and her credit card company sided with the airline when she tried to dispute the charges.

I asked American Airlines about the mix-up, and it offered her a full refund of the new ticket without explanation. But this kind of thing has repeated itself so many times that I’ve begun to wonder if no-shows haven’t become a new revenue stream for travel companies.

“It’s not about maximizing profits” Are no-shows a way to earn more money? Travel companies vehemently deny it.

“It’s not about maximizing profit,” says Alex Foti, president of Bretton Woods Vacations, a vacation rental company in New Hampshire.

“It’s about fairness.”

He says no-shows are rare in his business, but when they happen, his company refunds any fees that are directly tied to services not rendered, such as the cleaning fee or optional charges like pet fees. But the rental amount itself is nonrefundable.

But it can get complicated. For example, some rental companies will offer a partial refund if they can re-rent the property. Others won’t, so if they rent the property twice, they keep all the money.

Airlines take a more sophisticated approach.

They overbook flights, betting that some of the passengers won’t show up. When they don’t, the airlines keep their airfares.

But falsely claiming that their customers didn’t show up for an outbound leg is definitely a red line.

How do you avoid losing your money in a no-

show mixup?

You don’t have to be the next no-show statistic.

Here are a few pro tips for keeping your money.

Stay connected. Flight schedules can change quickly. “Avoiding no-shows today requires agility and preparedness,” says Louise Truman, founder of the sustainable travel company Plotpackers. She recommends downloading your airline’s app for seamless travel updates. “It’s a lifesaver when things change unexpectedly,” she says.

Keep your boarding pass. A boarding pass is a confirmation that you took a flight. And I have to be honest, these flight no-shows are troubling.

At the very least, take a photo of your boarding pass to prove that you were on an outbound flight -- you may need it later as proof you were on the flight.

Get insurance. Travel insurance can cover you in some circumstances. “If you miss your flight, cruise, or hotel stay because of a travel delay or missed connection, travel insurance can usually provide coverage,” says Terry Boynton, cofounder and president of Yonder Travel Insurance.

Ask about extenuating circumstances. That’s the advice of Shehryar Khan, who owns a vacation rental in Seattle. He says that when someone has to cancel at the last minute because of bad weather or health issues, he can offer a refund.

“We do this because the relationship with the guest is more important than the specific booking,” he says.

Are no-shows a travel industry conspiracy?

So are the travel industry’s evil bean counters trying to make money by incorrectly labeling you as a no-show? As I review the cases, I’m inclined to chalk them up to innocent errors made by travel companies.

In other words, there’s probably not a no-show conspiracy.

That being said, you should take every step you can to protect yourself from being a no-show.

Keep your boarding passes, call ahead if you think you might be late checking in -- and never, ever, assume everything will be fine. Otherwise, TRAVEL See Page 11

It appeared Charlie had a droll, dry sense of humor . . . and was quiet. But when you got to know him . . . well, he was quite the story teller. Dozens of times he had us doubled over in laughter. He didn’t tell jokes. He told stories.

Went there for coffee with Pastor Huls and was informed that our dear friend, Charlie Mitich. founder and owner of Charlie’s Restaurant, passed away early yesterday morning, aged 90.

Recenly, Charlie broke his hip.

His loving daughter, Suzie, looked after him night and day. And then Charlie passed. Early yesterday morning.

I knew Charlie quite well.

To most folks he appeared to be a quiet businessman. And he was that. But he was also a legend in the food service business. He had owned several restaurants . . . all very successful. He hired great, talented people and treated them well. They stayed with him through thick and thin. Most of his staff have been with him for 20 years and more. That’s the sign of a good business . . .low

You’ve heard the promises. Every election season, the same politicians stand up and tell you they’re going to make life more affordable.

Then the moment the cameras are off, they do the opposite.

This month, Sacramento approved what the California Tax-

payers Association calls the largest tax increase in our state’s history.

There’s a new tax on health insurance, expected to raise premiums by roughly $100 a year for families already stretched thin by the cost of coverage. There’s a new tax on the software and digital products you download, applying California’s highest-in-the-nation sales tax to things you buy every day. And on July 1, our gas tax climbed again to 63.4 cents a gallon, keeping California’s prices at the very top in the country.

Add it up. Higher premiums.

Higher prices at the pump. A new charge on the technology your family and your job depend on. These aren’t abstractions on a budget spreadsheet. They’re dollars coming straight out of your paycheck, your grocery run, your retirement check.

Here’s what troubles me most: the people who voted for these increases are the same ones who told you they were fighting to bring costs down. You cannot claim to be for affordability while you reach deeper into working people’s pockets every single year.

California is already one of the most expensive places in America to live. Rent, groceries, utilities, childcare, insurance — our families are carrying more than almost anyone in the nation. Our seniors on fixed incomes feel every increase immediately. Our young families are wondering whether they can afford to stay in the state they grew up in. Piling on the largest tax hike in state history doesn’t ease that burden. It deepens it.

I’ll be honest with you: this is a pattern we have to fight at every level of government, including

Unlocking the Power of Home Equity Sadly, I just found out someone very close to me passed away. And come to find out, it was “a couple of weeks ago”. It was not uncommon to go a couple of weeks between our talks. But after a text didn’t get a reply, I sent another, then another and then panic set in. Last week we discussed the difference between the younger generation of DNs (30 and under) and the older DIs (40 and older). We ignored the “tweeners” (between 30 and 40) because they are a hybrid of DIs and DNs with blended characteristics. Both DIs and DNs use the extensive data storage of the IW as well as its ever improving AI but there is a subtle difference in the way each uses this resource.

The DIs had formed their adult cognitive processes before the IW (intelligent web) and its integrated AI (artificial intelligence) became available. DIs historically had few alternatives to their internal cognitive processes when making judgments and decisions. They might consult written reference material or another person but the final

judgment was internal. When the AI stoked IW came along in 2001, DIs considered it as excellent “external” information source.

Ns who grew up with the omnipresent IW, the process is a bit different. Throughout their formative years they were constantly exposed to the IW/AI with its vast data base and fast AI. As a result DNs tend to accept AI generated solutions without challenge from internal resources. The steady improvement in IQ scores throughout the 20th century is called the “Flynn Effect”. Since 2001 the IW with its AI has served as an alternative to internal cognizance. This may be responsible for recent measurable IQ reduction among DNs. For 100 years IQ scores have steadily rising about three points per decade (the “Flynn Effect”). The general rise in human IQ scores ended at the start of the 21st century as Generation Z became the first to experience “The Negative Flynn Effect”.

In the early years of the 21st century with its immense data base and ever improving AI, the IW proved faster and more accurate than humans in analyzing and solving many problems. The DIs, with fully developed cognitive assets, recognized the IWs speed and accuracy and used the IWs and its AI as an external resource.

DNs began accessing the IW before their internal cognitive resources had time to form. Instead of using the IW/AI as an external

asset, DNs internalized its processing power as a substitute for developing and using their internal resources. The answers and solutions generated by DIs and DNs come from the same source but there is an important difference.

Because DNs relied on the data base of the IW and the processing ability of AI, they have no reason to use internal storage and cognition to obtain answers and solutions. As a result, unlike their DI counterparts, DNs have never fully developed their internal data storage and cognitive abilities. This is evidenced by the recent five point drop in Z generation IQ test scores.

Renovated Escondido Public Library to reopen Aug. 3 Ribbon-cutting and public tours scheduled for Aug. 1 The City of Escondido will celebrate the reopening of the renovated Escondido Public Library with a community ribbon-cutting and public tours on Saturday, August 1. Ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon.

The library will officially reopen for regular service on Monday, August 3, at 9 a.m.

Located at 239 S. Kalmia St., the 45,000-square-foot library has undergone a major renovation—addressing critical infrastructure needs while transforming the building into a more accessible, flexible and welcoming community resource. Following the reopening, the library will resume a seven-day-a-week schedule, including Sunday hours.

The renovation was supported by a $10 million Building Forward Library Facilities Improvement Program grant from the California State Library, which waived the City’s matching-fund requirement. The City Council subsequently approved $815,000 to replace all the building’s windows rather than only those on the first floor. The City also approved $828,000 to support the library’s temporary relocation and continued operation at Mershops North County Mall during construction.

“This renovation allowed us to address longstanding infrastructure needs while reimagining how the library can serve the community,” said Library Director Rino Landa. “The renewed building better supports our role as a community hub and our mission to provide equal access to information and educational experiences that inspire learning and foster participation in a thoughtful, diverse society.”

A more welcoming and flexible library Although the renovation did not expand the building’s footprint, about 2,250 square feet of former staff space has been repurposed for public use.

New and improved amenities include: • A café and bookstore area • Dedicated Teen and Tween Spaces • A Quiet Space for reading and study • Nine private individual and group study pods • Open communal workspaces and collaboration areas • A flexible activity and makerspace • Lower shelving to improve visibility and natural light • Updated heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems • Roof and window repairs • Accessible restrooms and other ADA improvements • Solar-panel canopies in the parking lot The renovation also preserves important elements of the original library, including student-created tiles and the murals in the children’s library.

A new exterior mural honoring the Kumeyaay Nation’s creation story has been added. The artwork was made possible through a donation from the Escondido Community Foundation, with additional support from the Escondido Public Art Commission.

Community organizations also contributed substantially to the renewed facility. The Escondido Library Board of Trustees approved $311,445 in Library Trust funds for furniture, fixtures and equipment not covered by the State grant. The Escondido Library Foundation donated $107,000 for furniture and equipment in the Children’s Library.

The nine new study pods, with a combined cost of $105,847, were supported by several sources. The Friends of the Escondido Public Library donated $60,484, the Escondido Public Library Friends of Literacy Services contributed $30,242, and the remaining $15,121 came from literacy grants and library operating funds.

Transition back to Kalmia Street Saturday, June 27 was the final day of service at the temporary North County Mall location.

From now through Friday, July 31: Limited main library services will operate from the Pioneer Room at 247 S. Kalmia Street, next to the main library. Temporary hours will be Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., while staff relocate more than 130,000 books and other materials.

Saturday, August 1: Community ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by public tours of the renovated library. Ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon.

Monday, August 3: The Escondido Public Library officially reopens at 9 a.m. and resumes a new seven-day schedule: Monday — Thursday 9 a.m.

– 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Sundays 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

The library serves about 21,000 visitors each month and expects to wel-

come more than 265,000 visitors during the 2025–2026 fiscal year. More than 100,000 people hold Escondido Public Library cards, including about 25,000 active borrowers. Patrons check out about 40,000 physical items each month, totaling more than 450,000 checkouts during the past year.

The Pastor Speaks . . . Is It The End?

passed since that controversy, and I still can’t figure out what the big argument was. I suspect much of it had to do with political views rather than climate at all. Of course, when we talk about climate, we are talking about weather, and what is more interesting than that? In fact, there is more verbiage about the weather than the stock market or politics.

Pastor Huls It seems that we are having unprecedented weather. Many people have asked me if I remember anything like it. I must admit that I haven’t. But then I haven’t lived forever either. Historically, we can look to the past and find catastrophic moments in Earth’s history. There have been a few times when human beings have recorded such events of the past. It is different because we interpret events, often attaching religious meaning to them.

This phenomenon has taken on a new twist since Al Gore popularized the idea of climate change.

When I discussed it with friends of mine, suggesting that there was such a thing, I quickly learned that a religious fervor prevented any discussion at all. Over time, it became more of a political issue than a scientific one. Many years have

Tornados in great numbers have repeatedly ravaged areas, leaving many dead. While earthquakes are not the pattern in our local area, we are reminded that the BIG one will hit us soon.

Some minor earthquakes have occurred, but not with disastrous results, such as in Venezuela. There is talk of a cataclysmic eruption at Yellowstone, but until then, we wait. Either way, Mother Earth is reacting to forces far beyond our control. We can hardly put this in the category of climate change. Our reaction is usually to minor things like a hot spell. Beyond that is the issue of rainfall or the snowpack.

Whether these factors are a part of a bigger change remains to be seen as a worldwide shift; this is left to the study of the experts. Historically, there have been major periods of drought, rainfall, and seismic shifts.

The world has been around for a long time, and we see evidence of major changes.

Many believers, especially in the Christian tradition, see it as a sign of the end. These are all used to warn people to be ready when the end comes.

The second factor that we consider is the influence of religion. It is the most recent position of the teachings of Jesus Christ and the early church leaders. Much is connected with the end times and the judgment of God. Before the New Testament, we have little by way of predictions. The Hebrew portion of the Bible has little to say about predicting the future. In fact, most quotes regarding the prophets are takeaways from the New Testament. The main text often quoted is from Matthew 24, which includes Jesus’ second coming. This is followed by the Apostle Paul and finally the Book of Revelation. In these works, there is a discussion of the end times, God’s judgment, the end of history as we know it, preceded by cataclysmic events with floods, earthquakes, wars and rumors of wars, the rapture, nations

Such proclamations have been made since the teachings of Jesus Christ were interpolated into the Old Testament, or the Hebrew Bible. This has been a part of the Christian belief system for two thousand years. Are those claims closer to the end? Many believe so.

Every day, preachers and teachers have taken the words, especially Matthew 24 and Paul’s writings, as sure signs that the end is near. One reaction is to wait for it to happen.

The other reaction is to be about the Lord’s business and make of this world a better place to live. The ultimate question is, what is the will of God? Has He had enough of this world and humanity to bring it all to a close? And the next question is, why does He want to end it? Is the answer as simple as the Christian community portrays it? Is the rest of humanity on the same page?

Restoring accountability in our justice system One example comes from a tragedy that forever changed our San Diego community.

In 2001, the Santana High School shooting claimed the lives of two students, injured thirteen others, and left lasting scars on countless families.

More than two decades later, the individual responsible sought recall and resentencing through a legal pathway that was never intended to apply to crimes of that magnitude.

Although the Board of Parole Hearings determined that he continued to pose an unreasonable risk to public safety, existing law created an opportunity that did not align with the Legislature’s original intent.

I recognized that this was a gap between the purpose of the law and its real-world application. To address it, I authored AB 1959, legislation that restores the original intent of the resentencing process by ensuring that this pathway cannot be used in cases involving the most serious violent crimes committed by juveniles.

Rehabilitation remains an important principle of our justice system, but it must be balanced with accountability and a commitment to protecting our communities.

Giving families better tools to access treatment I have taken the same approach when addressing gaps in healthcare.

For families facing substance use disorder, the decision to seek treatment often comes during one of the most difficult moments they will ever experience. When a loved one is finally

ready to get help, families need reliable information about where they can turn for quality care.

California created a statewide treatment directory to help patients compare licensed providers. But because participation by private facilities remained voluntary, families were often left with incomplete information while making some of the most important decisions of their lives.

I saw an opportunity to strengthen this system. I authored legislation requiring licensed treatment facilities to participate in the state’s treatment directory, creating a more complete and transparent resource for families.

With easily accessible information about available services, accepted insurance, and treatment options, Californians will be better equipped to make informed decisions and find the care they need.

Improving coordination to help students succeed I have applied the same problemsolving approach to education.

California has made significant investments to improve student outcomes, yet achievement gaps continue to affect more than one million students each year. At the same time, school districts often navigate multiple state agencies that share similar goals but operate independently, resulting in overlapping requirements and inconsistent guidance.

I identified this fragmentation as a barrier preventing schools from receiving the coordinated support they need.

To address it, I introduced legislation establishing a statewide strategy to align education policy, improve collaboration among agencies, and better

support local schools in closing persistent achievement gaps.

By making state government work more effectively together, we can help educators focus their time and energy where it matters most: supporting students.

The responsibility to improve what already exists At first glance, these issues may appear unrelated. One concerns public safety. Another focuses on healthcare.

A third addresses education.

Yet each reflects the same responsibility: ensuring that government works the way Californians expect it to work.

Too often, discussions about government focus only on creating something new. Innovation is important, but effective governing also requires us to evaluate existing policies, recognize where they fall short, and make improvements when needed.

That is the work I have brought to the Legislature: listening to communities, identifying gaps, and developing solutions that make government more responsive and effective.

Good government is not measured simply by the number of bills we pass.

It is measured by whether our work makes a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

That means closing unintended loopholes, cutting unnecessary red tape and regulatory burdens, improving coordination, and strengthening public trust in our institutions.

The work of governing is never truly finished. It requires us to listen carefully, learn from experience, and continually improve the systems Californians rely upon every day.

It Got How Hot How Fast?

Since 2000 I’ve held a news conference every summer, warning people NOT to leave pets in closed cars on hot days.

I told reporters about the dangers, then got into a shelter vehicle holding an old garden thermometer.

Every few years, a brave reporter would get in with me to experience the heat.

A few years ago, we switched to a digital thermometer that shows real time temperature updates. That’s way better than waiting for the garden thermometer to catch up. Then we added a laser thermometer. You point at the asphalt, hit the button, and it shows the temperature of the ground your dog is walking on.

On July 16th, we conducted the 2026 Heat Danger Demonstration.

After two decades of getting in the car myself, my other half, our office manager, and the shelter president ganged up and said they would no longer allow me to get in. “You’ve become the old guy that you’ve warned everyone not to leave in a hot car.”

Meet Niki Plasse. She’s our Rancho Coastal Humane Society Community Outreach Manager. For the second year in a row, with the cameras rolling, Niki opened the car door, sat the thermometer on the dashboard facing out so the reporters could see it, then climbed in and shut the door. It was 83 degrees.

In a few seconds, Niki’s face began to glow. The thermometer jumped to 90. Ten seconds later it hopped to 99 degrees. The reporters could read her lips as Niki asked, “How hot is it in here?” As those words came out of her mouth, it jumped 108, then it hit 115. That’s when Niki got out, for her own safety.

The temperature in the car had gone from 83 degrees to 115 in 90 seconds.

In less time than it takes to run in and buy a soda, the temperature in the car became potentially deadly.

Niki said, “It’s not just the heat.

There’s no air flow. It’s stifling.”

The danger is that it gets much hotter, much faster than people think it will.

How dangerous is it to leave a pet or person in a car on a hot day?

As I told the reporters, “It’s not worth taking a chance. Because, if you’re wrong, you don’t get a second chance.”

AMELIA EARHART’S DISAPPEARANCE CONTINUES TO BE DEBATED. Amelia Earhart’s disappearance over the central Pacific Ocean on 2 July 1937 still remains one of aviation’s greatest enigmas and unsolved mysteries -and the public is still engulfed with unceasing curiosity which has begat multiple conspiracy theories, including suspicions of her being a U.S. spy and a subsequent government cover-up.

Many of these theories will be discussed – and why U.S. government data surrounding her mysterious disappearance were even “classified” in the first place.

Despite the largest search and rescue operations in history – down through the decades -- no trace of her or her navigator, Fred Noonan, has ever been found.

But we’re getting ahead of our story.

“THE BEST PLACE TO START IS AT THE BEGINNING.” To paraphrase Glinda, the Good Witch of the North from the Wizard of Oz: “The best place to start is at the beginning.”

She first entered the world as Amelia Mary Earhart in Atchison, Kansas (born 24 July 1897; she disappeared 2 July 1937 and was officially declared dead 5 January 1939).

Amelia Earhart was predominantly of German and English ancestry, the daughter of Samuel “Edwin” Stanton Earhart and Amelia “Amy” Earhart.

IS AMELIA EARHART HONORED & CELEBRATED AROUND THE WORLD TODAY? Incredibly, Amelia Earhart no longer belongs to just America – she belongs to the world – a distinction not always accorded to other heroic American figures.

Her legacy as a trailblazing aviatrix whose daring feats set speed and distance records, along with her global support for women’s rights in the fields of science, technology, and aviation pioneering is globally recognized today.

The surprise landing sparked a legendary, century-old rivalry between two neighboring Welsh villages over who actually hosted the aviation pioneer.

In Barry Docks, a major port facility in Wales, it is claimed that a local Welsh fisherman in a rowing boat heard first heard Amelia Earhart shout, “Where am I?” The tale is etched on a Barry Port Harbor Monument and stone plaque celebrating the historic event which can be seen today by tourists.

However, a neighboring Welsh village two miles away from Barry Port asserts a different claim, stating that locals assert Earhart put her head out of her plane in their own region and asked “Where am I?” And someone on shore yelled back: “Pwll inlet!”

To this day, in 2026, this rivalry between two Welsh villages in South Wales is known as “The Great Welsh Amelia Earhart Controversy,” a colorful slice of local lore in the area, cementing Earhart in the cultural memory of succeeding Welsh generations for 98 years now, and counting.

“She disappeared in the South Pacific while trying to become the first woman to fly around the World,” Trump repeated at the time.

Last year, on 26 September 2025, due to continuous public interest and persistent rumors of a government cover-up, U.S. President Donald Trump directed the declassification and release of all government records pertaining to Amelia Earhart’s final flight when she attempted to be the first woman to circumnavigate the globe.

Following this directive, the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the Director of National Intelligence formally began the rolling release of thousands of pages of these declassified documents on 14 November 2025, publicly available at: archives.gov.

Despite these unsealing, aviation experts noted that much of the information -such as U.S. Coast Guard radio logs and investigation reports -- had already been released to the public decades prior.

The story of the American aviation pioneer, who vanished while flying over the Pacific Ocean, “has captivated millions,” the U.S president wrote on social media during this announcement of transparency in 2025.

Earhart’s disappearance during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe spawned numerous theories - from a simple crash due to fuel exhaustion to more elaborate claims of Japanese capture and/or U.S government espionage.

“Amelia made it almost three quarters around the world before she suddenly, and without notice, vanished, never to be seen again,” Trump concluded.

The two other prominent theories are that Earhart crash-landed on or near the then-Japanese Marshall Islands, or that she made it to Nikumaroro Island near Kiribati and died as a castaway there.

There is no conclusive evidence for either of these theories - but that has not stopped amateur and professional historians from digging into them.

Parts of a skeleton found on Nikumaroro in 1940 were initially thought to have been hers, but doctors at the time decided they belonged to a male body.

The documents that were declassified and released last year were supposed to include “all government records related to Amelia Earhart, her final trip, and everything else about her,” according to Trump.

As previously stated, this was not the case: many files remained classified and inaccessible for public viewing – all of which only heightens public suspicions and conspiracy theories.

It is remarkable that interest in her case including efforts to locate the wreckage of Earhart’s plane -- has remained persistently strong for almost 90 years.

NOT ALL EMILIA EARHART DATA WAS “DECLASSIFIED” AND RELEASED.

Last year, a group of researchers said they might have found Earhart’s longlost plane.

While some FBI files and Navy search reports have been declassified over the decades, some records have remained inaccessible, fueling speculation about a cover-up: why are some files still suppressed from public viewing as people have suspiciously inquired from several nations?

They used sonar imaging to map the ocean floor around Howland Island, leading them to what they said could be a small aircraft lying around 4,877 metres (16,000 feet) below the surface.

In retrospect, Earhart disappeared while trying to reach Howland Island, a remote, uninhabited coral island owned by the U.S so that her plane could refuel.

In 2022, a series of events took place in Londonderry (officially also called Derry in Northern Ireland) to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Earhart’s historic transatlantic landing.

She had already flown eastward from Oakland, California to Lae in Papua New Guinea in her twin-engine Electra plane, before she and navigator Fred Noonan vanished somewhere over the Pacific.

The official explanation is that the plane suffered communication problems while the two struggled to find the island, and that Earhart eventually crashed into the ocean when she ran out of fuel.

While this version of events is largely accepted, no physical evidence - such as debris - has ever been found to back it

Despite all of this, her worldwide accolades continue.

The belief that the government covered up her disappearance largely centers on two major theories: THE SPY MISSION MYTH: Speculation arose that Earhart was on a covert intelligence-gathering mission for the U.S. government over Japanesecontrolled territories in the Pacific.

However, a 1967 security review of Navy files by the FBI during President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration determined that she was not a spy and that the files did not warrant classification.

HEARD ON A SHORTWAVE RADIO COULD HAVE BEEN EARHART’S FINAL WORDS .

In July 1937, 15-year-old Betty Klenck in St. Petersburg, Florida, tuned her family’s shortwave radio and transcribed terrifying, real-time distress calls from Amelia Earhart. Her contemporaneous notes detailed harrowing phrases such as “waters high!” and “water’s knee deep - let me out!” and “help us quick!”

Betty’s transcription is considered one of the most creditable post-loss signals from Earhart’s final days.

Some researchers, such as those at the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, believe these messages genuinely indicate Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan survived the initial crash but became marooned castaways on a deserted island (such as Gardner Island, now Nikumaroro) and could only broadcast when the tide was low enough to run their aircraft’s engine.

While the official U.S. Navy’s conclusion is that the plane sank shortly after crashing into the Pacific, 15-yearold Betty’s meticulous documentation remains a cornerstone for alternative theories about the aviator’s final chapter.

Also, a housewife in Toronto, Canada heard a shorter message, but it was no less dire: “We have taken in water . . . we can’t hold on much longer!”

In that harrowing scene, the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) believes, was probably one of the final moments of Earhart’s life.

The group put forth the theory in a paper that analyses radio distress calls heard in the days after Earhart disappeared.

These different recording transcriptions from different sources, independently, seem to corroborate the essence of what truly transpired during Earhart’s final distress calls.

On July 2, 1937, the US Navy put an “all ships, all stations” bulletin, as National Post says. The authorities asked everyone “with a shortwave radio and a trained ear to listen in to the frequencies Amelia Earhart had been using on her trip when she used 3105 and 6210 kilohertz.”

It was not, however, an easy task. The Electra, the plane Amelia flew was, unfortunately, only designed to have a radio reach within a few hundred miles.

The Pacific Ocean was much more vast than a couple hundred miles.

Amelia Earhart’s last confirmed (inflight) transmission, received at 8:43 a.m. on 2 July 1937, by the U.S. Coast Guard cutter CGC Itasca, was: “We are on the line 157 337. We will repeat this message. We will repeat this on 6210 kilocycles. Wait!”

In the days following her disappearance, numerous stations and amateur radio operators reported hearing faint, desperate distress signals.

These faint messages, barely intelligible, unfortunately, remain unverified.

Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight was between New York City and Paris, while Earhart’s was from Canada to Ireland.

Charles Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field, New York, on the morning of 20 May 1927, and landed in Paris on the evening of May 21, 1927.

THE CASTAWAY THEORY. Reputable sources, such as the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery theorize that Earhart and Noonan successfully landed their Lockheed Electra plane on the reef of a remote atoll, i.e.

Nikumaroro, and that distress signals continued to be transmitted for days.

Amelia Earhart took off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, Canada on 20 May 1932, and landed in Northern Ireland on the morning of 21 May 1932.

In declassified files, another recording was heard shortly after: “We have taken in water, my navigator is badly hurt!

It is virtually impossible for today’s 2026 generation to fully comprehend and appreciate what she accomplished in a different America, a different world in which she lived.

The U.S. Navy and aviation experts concluded that she and navigator Fred Noonan quickly ran out of fuel, ditched into the deep Pacific, and the plane sank. Further details on the fate of the castaways, Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan, sadly remain unknown to this day.

Regarding her historic and successful transatlantic flight, Amelia Earhart’s immortality is secure for all-time.

And for that she is remembered and celebrated today.

On 20 and 21 May 1932 she took off from Harbour Grace in Newfoundland, Canada, and completed her historic journey landing in a pasture near Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

For that once-little girl who grew up as a ‘tom boy’ in Atchison, Kansas, the young child early-on showed she was cut from a different bolt.

That small child seemed to have a spirit of adventure and would set off daily to explore her neighborhood with her younger sister, Pidge. Unlike most dainty little girls of her era, Amelia Earhart and her younger sister were often found climbing trees, hunting rats with a rifle, and sledding downhill.

Biographers characterize them as tomboys. What causes most little girls to be squeamish and scream, Amelia and

her sister were vastly different.

The girls kept worms, moths, katydids (nocturnal insects closely related to crickets and grasshoppers) which they gathered in a growing collection.

In 1904, with the help of her uncle, Amelia Earhart constructed a homemade ramp that was fashioned after a roller coaster she had seen on a trip to St. Louis, Missouri, and secured it to the roof of the family tool shed. After her well-documented first flight off the ramp, she emerged from the broken box that had served as a sled with a bruised lip, a torn dress, and a “sensation of exhilaration,” saying loudly: “Oh, Pidge! It’s just like flying!”

Little did the world know at the time, that this little child would, indeed, fly into the history books . . . and be celebrated and honored around the world to this very day.

On Friday 24 July – this very month in 2026 – America will celebrate “Amelia Earhart Day” across these United States.

That small child grew and has walked into the pantheon of the immortals – and she no longer just belongs to America.
