THE OLD MAN IN THE CELL WOULD NOT GIVE THE POLICE HIS NAME — SO JERRY JEFF GAVE HIM ONE THAT LASTED FOREVER. In 1965, Jerry Jeff Walker was still drifting more than building a career. He had left home in New York, gone AWOL from the National Guard, changed his name, played wherever somebody would let him, and spent enough time on buses and street corners to know how quickly a night could go wrong. Then one night in New Orleans, he got picked up for public intoxication and landed in the First Precinct jail.

Inside the cell was an older Black man with silver hair, worn-out shoes, and a ragged shirt. The man had been arrested in a police sweep after a murder case nearby.

When the officers asked his name, he would not give them one. He only said people called him “Bojangles.”

The men in the cell started talking. The old man told stories. He talked about dancing in minstrel shows, about travelling, about the dog he had lost. At some point, the jailer told him to dance for the room. He did. Jerry Jeff remembered the soft shoe. He remembered the old man jumping high in a cell full of drunks and strangers.

Then he remembered him sitting back down and talking about the dog, the one part of the story that made the whole room go quiet.

A few years later, Walker turned that night into “Mr. Bojangles.”

The song came out in 1968. Then the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded it and took it into the Top 10.

Nina Simone sang it. Sammy Davis Jr. sang it. Bob Dylan sang it.

More than a hundred artists eventually recorded some version of a man who may never have known his name had left that jail. ***

By the end of the second year he has a dozen very nice used trucks and employs fifteen previously unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. He continues to work hard.

Time passes and at the end of the fifth year he owns a fleet of nice trucks and a warehouse that his wife supervises, plus two tomato farms that the boys manage. The tomato company’s payroll has put hundreds of homeless and jobless people to work. His daughter reports that the business grossed over one million dollars.

Planning for the future, he decides to buy some life insurance.

Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. Then the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents electronically.

When the man replies that he doesn’t have time to mess with a computer and has no e-mail address, the insurance man is stunned, “What, you don’t have e-mail? No computer? No Internet? Just think where you would be today if you’d had all of that five years ago!”

“Ha!” snorts the man. “If I’d had e-mail five years ago I would be sweeping floors at Microsoft and making $5.35 an hour.”

Which brings us to the moral of the story: Since you got this story by newspaper, you’re probably closer to being a janitor than a millionaire. *** And yet again trhis morning no one was standing by my bed saying, “Your Royal Majesty, here is your morning Mimosa.” *** I think it’s strange that when Star Trek goes where no man has gone before they always find somebody there. *** I fear I’m being left behind by Facebook users. It seems I don’t know the proper protocol.

I tend to only post when I have something of interest to say . . . like a story, a commentary, a photo (but, normally, if I post a photo I try to tell what it is, what it’s about).

Facebook users to post every little detail in their day. Why, however, everyone would be interested in knowing every little detail in my life beats hell out of me.

But, in an attempt to conform, I began posting on Facebook as follows: Got up. Yawned. Petted my pups.

Went to the bathroom. Closed the door.

Finished in bathroom. Got dressed. Put my tennis shorts on, then my shirt, then my Birkenstocks.

In the office.

Did email for an hour.

In the kitchen.

Ate breakfast. Oatmeal. With blueberries, almonds, yogurt. Cup of tea. Yummy good.

In the bathroom.

Brushed teeth, shaved.

In the family room.

Read daily paper.

Yawned.

Back in the office.

Sent out emails. Organized thoughts. Gave up effort as “too much work.”

Twiddled thumbs for, maybe, two minutes.

Petted pups again.

In the hallway.

Shouted at dogs to stop barking.

Neighbors had company arrive.

In the bedroom.

Time for mid-day nap.

News: People throughout middle and southern California report they felt a constant, rolling, feeling. Did you feel that at all? lyle: Naw, didn’t feel a thing.

News: Amazing! May I ask what you were doing at the time the earthquake hit? lyle: Naw. That’s private information.

News: We appreciate how calm you are able to be in the midst of such dire news, Mr. Davis. How do you avoid panic? lyle: Well, I may have mentioned this once or twice but, I didn’t feel a thing.

By Gig Conaughton, County of San Diego Communications Office This year, the Summer Movies in the Park’s current lineup is scheduled to show about 130 movies in parks all around the county through October. A current list of this summer’s movies can be found here.

Movies typically begin about 15 minutes after the sun sets.

Families and folk are encouraged to wear warm clothes and bring blankets as the weather can turn chilly when the sun goes down.

Pre-show activities begin before dark.

As always, this year’s list of movies includes something for just about everyone ─ animated and live-action films that include comedies, musicals, action adventure, science fiction and romance.

There are older classics like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Goonies,” “Shrek” “Ghostbusters,” and “Ratatouille.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Editor’s Note: This Letter to the Editor is longer than most but is both well written, timely, and provocative so we chose to run it, unedited: For years, North County has been missing something important: ice.

When Ice-Plex Escondido closed in 2020, it left a noticeable gap in our local sports scene. Even though we enjoy 77-degree weather most of the year, the demand for ice sports has continued to grow.

That’s why many residents were encouraged when the Escondido City Council unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with The Rinks Foundation on June 3 to explore building a three-sheet ice complex at Kit Carson Park.On paper, the proposal has real appeal.

The Rinks Foundation, founded by Anaheim Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli, has promised to cover all construction, operation and maintenance costs. annual revenue for the city and create short-term construction jobs.

But as a North County resident who values both youth sports and our public parks, I’m increasingly concerned about how this project is moving forward.

The plan requires removing the existing adult softball complex at Kit Carson Park and relocating those fields to Ryan Park. The Rinks Foundation has pledged $4 million to help with the move. The problem is that Ryan Park is already heavily used. Local youth baseball and soccer organizations have raised legitimate concerns about losing field space, yet the City Council appears to have given little meaningful attention to these worries so far.

What bothers me most is the contradiction. The Samuelis are billionaires who frequently speak about their commitment to youth sports. Yet this proposal would displace thousands of young athletes who play baseball and soccer — two of the most popular youth sports in our area — to make room for their preferred sport. Instead of finding a solution that works for all families, it feels like one group is being prioritized over others.

Kit Carson is one of Escondido’s largest and most cherished public parks. It’s a place where thousands of residents gather every week for everything from casual picnics to organized sports.

Turning a significant portion of it into a large commercial ice rink would permanently alter the park’s character.

I’m not opposed to bringing ice sports back to Escondido. A well-designed ice rink could be a real asset for our community. But we should be asking tougher questions: Why weren’t other locations given serious consideration?

Why does this plan require sacrificing existing youth sports fields? And

why has the City Council moved so quickly without deeper community engagement?

Escondido deserves both vibrant recreational opportunities and protected public green spaces. Right now, this proposal feels like it forces us to choose one at the expense of the other. Before we commit prime parkland to this project, our elected leaders owe us a truly transparent process that listens to all residents, not just those who skate.

- Scott Asay, Escondido *** I am writing to inform you of a matter that you might find worth reporting. It involves a national chain of drugstores that has recently installed a new type of credit card reader that while it seems to be the height of technology is a violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1991 Title III. The reader, which replaced the longfamiliar device with the keypad under the small rubber hood, now has a clean smooth glass plate with readout screens and touch pads for the keys. There is not, if you can believe it, even a Braille pad or other means of tactile access.

It is IMPOSSIBLE for a blind person to use. I could not use it without asking for assistance from a clerk, which meant that in order to use my VISA

debit card, I had to give out my PIN. The whole point of a PIN is personal and financial security and now I and any other blind person has to ask for help by revealing that code.

The manager told me those new readers are being installed in all of the company’s nine thousand stores nationwide. That means that hundreds of thousands of blind customers would have to reveal their PINs to make use of the readers.

I have already logged a complaint with the corporate offices and informed them I would be contacting the media if steps were not taken to alleviate the matter or find a sutable compromise.

I would like to discuss this with you and would be happy to write a story pro bono without a byline if you like. I only want to get the word out. If these devices start turning up in major and chain groceries, department stores, and convenience stores they will force blind patrons to reveal their PINs to total strangers.

This is totally illegal and unacceptable to me. I am giving you the first shot at reporting it before I go to the U-/t, KPBS and the American Council for the Blind.

Man About Town by lyle e davis WAR WITH IRAN? I have feared this possibility for quite some time . . . . primarily because I know a lot of Persians (Iranians).

They are a lovely people. Kind.

Sweet. Generous. Caring.

It’s not the Iranian people that are the problem.

It’s the radical government and its crazy leaders.

I am hopeful that, given all that has recently transpired, that Iran will have a regime change. Get rid of the radicals . . . bring in new, decent leadership.

I first became interested in Iran and its people thanks to a brilliantly successful chiropractor by name of Omid Rahmanian and his wife, Parisa, an equally successful dentist. Dr. Omid was a client, advertising in The Paper and he contacted me, noting that I had done cover stories on both the Mormons and the Sikhs; would I be interested in doing a cover story on the Baha’i faith. He was primarily interested because the radical Iranian regime (my words, not his) had imprisoned seven Iranians for simply being members of the Baha’i faith. I said I would be interested but in order to explain to our readers who and what Baha’i was - I needed to learn about it myself. I was then invited to several evening meetings in the homes of active Baha’is. Bahai’s do not have a church, a temple, or synagogue, or a supreme religious entity such as a Pope, a Priest, or a Rabbi. The meet in Baha’i homes . . and meetings have members rotate as the host and lead the service.

In addition to the in-home visits I read up on Baha’i.

The Baháʼí Faith is a religion founded in the 19th century that teaches the essential worth of all religions and the unity of all people. Established by Baháʼu’lláh, it initially developed in Iran and parts of the Middle East, where it has faced ongoing persecution since its inception. The religion

has 5-8 million adherents (known as Baháʼís) spread throughout most of the world’s countries and territories. Baháʼís annually elect local, regional, and national Spiritual Assemblies that govern the religion’s affairs, and every five years an election is held for the Universal House of Justice, the nine-member governing institution of the worldwide Baháʼí community that is located in Haifa, Israel.

Baháʼís regard the world’s major religions as fundamentally unified in their purpose, but divergent in their social practices and interpretations. The Baháʼí Faith stresses the unity of all people as its core teaching; as a result, it explicitly rejects notions of racism, sexism, and nationalism. At the heart of Baháʼí teachings is the desire to establish a unified world order that ensures the prosperity of all nations, races, creeds, and classes.

I met several Baha’is at these inhome meetings. Several had tragic stories, one family had been literally burned out of their home in Iran simply because they were Bahai’s.

All had been persecuted by the Iranian regime while living in Iran.

I have since met many other Iranians/Persians (they prefer the name Persia and Persians; Iran is a new, manufactured name that does not truly represent the culture.) Almost all of the Persians I have met have been decent, sweet, loving and kind people . . . not at all like the regime that now governs Iran . . but which, hopefully, will soon be replaced by a respectable and respected government.

The thought of war between America and Iran is totally repugnant to me. Thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of innocent and kind Iranians might well be killed if such a war were to break out; similarly, we, America, would likely have casualties. A total waste of life . . for both sides.

I suspect America is working behind the scenes in Iran . . . trying to identify and support individuals and groups that could form a replacement government if and when the present regime is toppled.

It appears reasonable hope is on the horizon. *** Had coffee the other day with long time pal and outstanding client, Laura Strickler. She’s that beautiful blonde who knows everything there is to know about accessing the equity in your home. She told me the following story: Judy lived in Hesperia, California.

She called one day looking for a solution to a specific problem. She had a hole in her roof. She needed $5,000 to repair her roof. Hesperia can have lows in the 30’s and highs

in the 100’s. And then, occasionally, Judy had to contend with rain.

Judy had applied for a city program that would repair her roof. Applications were only accepted annually.

I worked with Judy for a year before she finally gave up hope for the city program.

Once Judy applied for the reverse mortgage, her loan funded in 30 days. We were able to repair her roof through the repair function of the loan program. She also wound up with quite a bit more money to help her moving forward.

Over the years, Judy became a friend. Judy’s son called me to thank me for helping his mother be able to relax and not stress about money any longer. She was able to enjoy her retirement for the first time.

*** Last week’s cover story, “Out of Body Experiences” by Freidrich Gomez hit home with me.

I had one.

About 30 years ago I was on duty at the concession building at “Lyle’s At Dixon Lake” when I accidentally overdosed on some heart medication. I passed out. Park Rangers found me lying on the floor, unconscious and called 911.

I can remember being transported by ambulance and I was observing. from the ceiling of the ambulance, like a fly. I watched the paramedics attending me and at one time remembered one saying,”he’s flatlining. We’re losing him!”

The next thing I remember is waking up and seeing the face of a physician with a very concerned look on his face. I was in the Emer-

gency Room of Palomar Hospital.

The rest is a blur. I was in hospital for two or three days and then discharged. End of story.

What caused my “out of body experience?” I don’t have a clue. I saw no flashing lights, no light at the end of a tunnel, no heavenly creatures, no fear of dying. Or living. It just happened. *** Like many of you I have enjoyed watching The World Cup games.

Many of you had sons and daughters who played in NCYSA. We started with 350 kids and in the third year we had to close applications as we had 1500 kids playing and no more soccer fields available. I had predicted that soccer would become our next big sport . . and it looks like I was prophetic.

Rather proud of that. NCYSA has since merged with a larger organization . . . but the memories remain.

Jázmin Pellegrini was 15 years old. She had struggled with her mental health since she was 12.

By her sophomore year, she had been admitted to ten different psychiatric facilities on 40 separate occasions. She needed long-term residential care. California did not have a bed for her.

So the state placed her in an unlocked facility. She ran. She was hospitalized one more time.

Three days after she was discharged, she was found dead on the streets of San Francisco from a suspected fentanyl overdose.

Her mother had already surrendered legal custody of her own daughter — not because she failed her, but because giving up custody was the only path anyone offered to get Jázmin a bed.

This happened on Governor Newsom’s watch. And it happened after he stood in front of the cameras in 2022, declared a youth mental health crisis, and promised California parents that help was on the way.

Here is what help looked like.

Sacramento spent more than $15 billion. Out of all of it, the state planned eight new psychiatric residential treatment facilities for all of California — 158 beds total. Five years later, not one has opened. Zero beds, for 39 million people.

A new investigation in City Journal traces where the money actually went, and every parent in San Diego County should read it. More than $3.5 billion went to “prevention” aimed at every child in the state, sick or healthy. Four hundred million dollars turned schools into mental-health billing operations.

Two hundred seventy-eight million dollars built a new workforce of “wellness coaches” who need only two years of community college and whose official code of conduct commits them to advancing “social, economic, and environmental justice.”

Another $381 million funded a grant program where the treatments did not have to be proven

to work — state dollars flowed to drum circles and sweat lodges.

The consultancy paid $4.4 million to write the program’s guiding principles identified the root causes of childhood mental illness as “racism, white supremacy, and settler colonialism.” That is a direct quote from the official state report.

Meanwhile, in many California districts, parents cannot opt their children out of these programs. In some, handing over your child’s insurance information is mandatory. And under a 2023 state law, your 12-year-old can begin ongoing mental health treatment without you ever being notified.

This is not a health care system. It is a state agency walking past parents to reach their children. And while it was being built, kids in real crisis were left in emergency rooms, cycled through short-term programs that never stabilized them, and — in Jázmin’s case — sent out to die on a sidewalk.

While Sacramento funded consultants, we went to work in North County.

that are not a jail cell and not an ER waiting room. Before this, North County had nothing like it. We initiated the new Psychiatric Hospital Facility on the Tri-City Medical Center campus: actual beds, actual care, the capacity Sacramento has promised for five years and still has not delivered. And we launched a mobile crisis response pilot, so that when a family hits the worst moment of its life, the people at the door are trained clinicians, not just patrol officers.

This is what real work on mental health looks like. It is not glamorous. It is not a press conference in front of the state seal. It is beds, clinicians, and getting help to the people who need it most.

We still have a long way to go.

The need is bigger than any one county can meet — especially while the state pours billions into ideology and almost nothing into the children who are actually in crisis. But North County families should know this: we are not waiting on Sacramento.

They and I just didn’t think it wasn’t that big of a deal.”

On Facebook, Frederick W. Schumacher sadly reflects on a bygone era: “Live Sound plus Good DJs, plus Great Times made GREAT RADIO! The robo stations just don’t have that good quality sound (in their robo) and the ‘brighten my day’ effect is gone.”

On various social media platforms, the general consensus seems to be that the nostalgic magic which KOWN provided, with all the old radio equipment carts, and the see-through glass windows which invited the public to peer into ‘radio magic’ as it was happening with exciting ‘live’ broadcasts and colourful DJ personalities – all seem sadly relegated to the distant past.

As further described by Wikipedia and other historical sources: “KOWN (AM 1450) was a community staple in Escondido, California, famously known for its ‘fishbowl’ broadcast booths and for serving as North San Diego County’s home for local news, Top 40, and country music.”

American Airlines delayed my flight, so I drove. Why can’t I get a refund?

But American Airlines voids his refundable ticket because he’s technically a “no-show.” Can he get his money back?

Q: My wife and I were recently scheduled to fly from Boston to Tucson, Ariz., via Phoenix on American Airlines. We booked refundable tickets through Expedia.

The first flight was delayed 90 minutes because the first officer fell ill, and it also had a problem with weight calculations on checked baggage. Because of the delay, we missed our connecting flight to Tucson.

There were no later flights with space available, so we had to rent a

car and drive the 100 miles to Tucson.

American Airlines is offering me a flight credit. It has erroneously stated my ticket was nonrefundable. I have gotten nowhere, and I need help getting my refund. — Michael Damarino, Brockton, Mass.

A: I admire your initiative. When American Airlines handed you lemons in Phoenix, you made lemonade by renting a car and hitting the highway so you wouldn’t miss your vacation.

Here’s the thing about airline logic: It rarely aligns with the logic of a rational human being.

You purchased a refundable ticket.

In the real world, that means if you don’t use it, you get your money back. In the airline world, however, “refundable” often comes with

The most important string is the “no-show” clause. If you aren’t at the gate when the flight closes, and you haven’t canceled the reservation before your departure, the airline assumes you aren’t coming. It marks you as a no-show, cancels the rest of your itinerary, and you often forfeit the value of the ticket.

When you decided to rent a car and drive to Tucson, you effectively became a no-show for that second leg. You solved your own problem, which is commendable, but you didn’t tell American Airlines you were doing it so that their computers wouldn’t categorize you as a

no-show.

Since you booked through Expedia, there was an extra layer of complexity. The online travel agency saw that the airline had marked you as a no-show, which tied its hands regarding a refund.

Expedia told you to talk to American. American told you to talk to Expedia. It was the classic travel industry game of Pong, and you as the ball.

To be clear, you should have received a full refund for the unused portion of your ticket. The delay was caused by the airline’s operational issues—a sick pilot and bagFLIGHT See Page 9

gage weight problems—not an act of God. Under the Department of Transportation’s rules, you’re entitled to a refund if the airline cancels your flight. When it comes to a delay, it must be “significant” (more than three hours for a domestic flight) to be considered for a refund.

Your delay wouldn’t have qualified if you had a nonrefundable ticket, but your ticket was refundable, so you should have received it, as long as you notified American before the flight departed.

However, because you took matters into your own hands without formally canceling that second leg first, you gave the airline a technical loophole.

For future reference, if you decide to bail on a connection and drive, make sure you cancel the remain-

ing flight segments immediately.

Get an agent to document that the cancellation is due to a significant delay. That preserves the value of your refundable ticket.

If you ever find yourself stuck in a customer service loop between an agency and an airline, you can often cut through the red tape by escalating your complaint to an executive. I publish the names, numbers and emails of the top executives at American Airlines and Expedia in the company contacts section of my consumer advocacy website, Elliott.org.

I contacted Expedia on your behalf.

The company reached out to American Airlines regarding your situation. The airline initially stuck to its no-show policy, adding two $50 trip credits to your existing credits for the inconvenience, but then did

an about-face and refunded the entire ticket. You say it would have been impossible to notify American that you weren’t going to use the next leg of your flight because of the initial flight delay, and the airline eventually agreed.

Pastor Huls Whenever I have a chance, I like to see what is going on in the world around me. Recently, I stopped at a roadside stand owned by a friend of mine. The stand itself was an enterprise featuring fruits, vegetables, and a wide selection of fresh garden products. The owner is an entrepreneur. She is in this business to make money and works hard to succeed. There was more to this operation, including others’ endeavors. Some were selling fresh loaves of bread, filling the shelves from a local woman’s kitchen. I noticed jars of freshly canned dill pickles, all labeled with the canner’s name. The one thing that surprised me the most was a soup stand with three kinds of homemade soup. It was a mother-and-daughter team venturing forth with the ambition of selling homemade soup, offering three varieties, ready to eat at the stand or packaged for take-home.

There was a selection of fresh

eggs, jam, and honey for sale. It was an entrepreneurial spirit. It was good to see this endeavor instead of complaints about the high cost of groceries and low incomes. Of course, profit was a motive, but it was not without the risk of the endeavor and work. The entire enterprise has led me to write this article about the entrepreneur.This article, being a semi-religious piece, introduces you to the greatest entrepreneur of all time and eternity: that being, the person of God.There was a moment, we are told, when there was nothing in the void of outer space. In itself, this is incomprehensible, but then, in some mysterious moment, all time began with the creation of galaxies, supernovae, black holes, and what we call the heavens, with suns, stars, and unimaginable forces raging through a newly created universe. All this is known as God’s enterprise, all brought about with an entrepreneurial spirit. For whatever reason, this is what God wanted. But like most entrepreneurs, God doesn’t stop there. His next step is to take a small block of all the creation and engage in an enterprise of shaping a planet called Earth. On Earth, a unique entrepreneurial spirit emerges with expectations of payback. There was significant investment in this enterprise with great expectations.

We don’t know all that was in God’s

mind in what He made, but we do know His investment didn’t pay off.

In fact, it seemed to go bankrupt before there was any reward at all from the human beings.What did God do with His enterprise? Most people who start an enterprise that fails walk away, declare bankruptcy, give up, and never try again. And yet, many are willing to pay the price of losing money, time, family, possessions, and countless hours of sleep. We think of such entrepreneurs as Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and others who succeeded. What does God do with His failed enterprise? He was tempted to give up. He tries, however, with His creation, by gathering a group of people called the Jews, including laws to keep people in check, and even tries to build a new organization. For the most part, none of this works. The grandiose plan of God seems destined to fail; it would have, but for one step that God takes. He is willing to pay the price of His time and self-sacrifice, reconstruction of His original product into new possibilities of a new engineer called Jesus Christ, who will now recreate the plan.

Ultimately, the entire universe will be renewed, and there is to be a new heaven and Earth, including a new human being. God won’t let His enterprise fail.

Ah ha! We caught you reading our column in “The Paper”.

That means there is a significant statistical probability that you are one of us, a DI (digital immigrant) who grew to adulthood before the arrival of the IW (intelligent web) in 2001. Today you are very likely at least 40 years old and part of an ageing population that will disappear toward the end of this century. We DIs are major users of fading technologies like radio, television, wired telephones, mail, movies, books and newspapers.

These technologies are gradually losing ground to more advanced technologies like the IW and AI (artificial intelligence). DIs are an incredibly diverse group. Some

of us are still in the workforce and busy using and designing contemporary technology. Retired DIs are thrilled and amazed at the ability of the IW and its AI to provide information, answers and solutions. On the darker side there are naysayers among us who scoff at the use of “newfangled gadgets’.

There will always be skeptics, you might have one at home or work.

Don’t let them keep you from enjoying the benefits of modern technology. We DIs reached adulthood before the release of the IW in 2001. For those of us who use and understand it, the IW is an incredible treasure chest of information and solutions. In the quarter century between 2000 and 2025 the Internet usage among DIs grew from less than an hour per day to nearly four hours per day.

The IW has become an important source of answers, information and entertainment. DIs found the IW a faster and more efficient way to learn and communicate than traditional methods. But DIs did not abandon the “old ways” of learning and communicating, they added the IW to enhance an improve our lives.Those individuals who spent their entire young lives exposed to the ever improving IW and its embedded AI face a completely different learning environment than previous generations. We call them

DNs or digital natives and the oldest of them are barely thirty years old today. Since we climbed out of the trees the environment in which we are raised played the major role in forming who we are. For millennia parents, neighbors, friends and school helped us to form our belief systems and personality. In the past quarter century the IW came into existence. Today DNs spend approximately eight hours/day or half their waking hours on the IW. Nothing in the long history of mankind compares to this 21st century IW revolution. It may be a bit premature to predict the effect of the IW on our civilization. Until the arrival of the AI stoked IW, the intellectual power of the human

mind reigned as Earths dominant intelligence for thousands of centuries. Now with the IWs instant access to man’s entire knowledge base and the power of a thousand human minds, the IW has replaced individual human cognizance as the supreme intelligence on our planet? DNs have spent their entire formative years under the influence of the AI stoked IW. In 2000, the year before the release of the IW, the average daily time folks spent on the Internet was less than one hour per day, By 2010, only one decade later, for DNs that number had risen to nearly eight hours per day. What You Need When You Only Have Minutes When we moved to San Diego from Chicago, our friends asked, “Aren’t you afraid of the earthquakes?”

Whether you buy a kit or build your own, here’s a short list of what you’ll need.

Paperwork or a flash drive including phone numbers, the name of your veterinarian, and copies of your pet’s medical records. Keep them in a waterproof container.

We knew about quakes, but nobody warned us about wildfires. June through early November is Fire Season in California, but fires can happen anytime.

We don’t have much time when officials order an evacuation, so we need to be prepared. A good place to start is with a pet evacuation kit.

Start with a crate or carrier. It’s a perfect place to store the supplies you need. Keep it in your car, garage or somewhere else that’s easily accessible. (NOT in the back of the closet under the Christmas decorations.)

Have everything labeled with your contact information. You’ll also want extra labels and markers.

That’s up to her. But most evacuation shelters don’t allow pets unless they’re secured.

One last thing. Firefighters are animal lovers, but it’s not their job to search for pets left behind. As you leave, post an “EVACUATED” sign on your door or front window letting them know you’re safe, so they can save your neighbors, too.

I ordered all other calls suspended and all units to Valley Blvd. to arrest racers and tow their cars. I saw right away the numbers were just too big for us! I had dispatch call the CHP (California Highway Patrol) for help. A few SDSO (San Diego Sheriff Office) Deputies came too.”

Escondido police patrol sergeant at the time, John Wilson, continues to explain a true-life American Graffiti moment that exploded “out of control” for a normally peaceful city described by Escondido police back then as: “A place where nothing big ever happens.”

Says Escondido patrol officer, Wilson: “I called Bob Wolford (who was a Lieutenant then) – and I also called my boss, and he authorised calling in all available Escondido Police officers and reserves! That did not accomplish much because we had only a few police cars.

I remember officers using unmarked detective cars trying to make traffic stops. I recall Jim Sarvis, a detective, rolling to it in a 1958 GMC pickup that we used to haul anything too big for a patrol car. It has no lights and no siren so Jim was honking the horn and flashing his headlights. It was so out of control that we sent an over-age detective respond and he had no gear. The CHP handled that for us. I always did love those guys!
