By Friedrich Gomez Many years ago, my editor and publisher of The Paper, Mr. lyle e. davis, managed Dick Clark’s radio station KGUD up in Santa Barbara, California. As manager of KGUD, my editor met some of the greatest legends of Hollywood movies and television, as well as mega-renowned singing icons.

The ledger of names – all of whom he met in the flesh -- is intoxicating to ponder, and would certainly turn many red-blooded Americans green with envy.

My editor met the likes of such pioneers and immortals as: Johnny Carson, Steve Allen, Jimmy Durante (one of Hollywood’s greatest comedians), Lucille Ball (whom he did not care for), Jo-Anne Worley (actress/comedian/singer), Clint Eastwood, Fernando Lamas, Glen Campbell, Hank Thompson (oldetime country singing star), Fess Parker (world-renowned for playing Disney TV’s Davy Crockett), George Lindsey (“Goober” from Andy Griffith TV show), singer Ed Ames (whom he did not like), and a galaxy of other stars that would brighten the Heavens!

All of which brings us to Hollywood’s greatest movie stars, television celebrities, and even U.S. Presidents – all of whom have had a long and storied love affair with San Diego!

GREGORY PECK Believe it or not, one of Hollywood’s greatest movie stars, Gregory Peck (1916 –2003) was born in La Jolla and lived most of his childhood attending local schools like La Jolla Grammar School, and La Jolla High School, and later San Diego High School.

The popular San Diego movie star often addressed social issues in the films he appeared in, and also in real life, leading him to, once again, be honoured – this time for his Lifetime Humanitarian work.

Gregory Peck was more than a global phenomenon and top box office draw, he became one of the most beloved and most popular movie stars from the 1940s to the 1970s.

Long before it became fashionable for Hollywood stars to address social issues of great concern, Gregory Peck was a harbinger, a clarion who called the world’s attention to global issues plaguing humankind.

For example, his role in “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947) centered on topics of anti-Semitism.

San Diego native, Robert Duvall, has a most astonishing acting career, having appeared in a historic 23 Oscar-nominated films.

A brief sampling are, “The Godfather” (1972), “The Godfather, Part II” (1974), “Apocalypse Now” (1979), “The Great Santini” (1979), “The Natural” (1984), “Days of Thunder” (1990), “The Paper” (1994), “Open Range” (2003) and so forth.

Throughout his illustrious career, Duvall has also starred in numerous television programmes and has won the Primetime Emmy Award, the AMC Award, and multiple Emmy nominations for “Lonesome Dove” (1989), “Stalin” (1992), and the TNT film “The Man Who Captured Eichmann” (1996).

Today, Robert Duvall is 94-yearsolde and currently lives on a farm in Virginia with his wife of 20 years, Luciana Pedraza who, at age 53, is 41 years his junior.

Even at age 94, Duvall has not retired from acting.

While he has slowed down in recent years, focusing more on smaller roles, he continues to work.

This San Diego native is multifaceted as actor, director, and producer.

TED DANSON Ted Danson was born on 29 December 1947 in San Diego and has appeared in many movies and sitcoms including “Cheers”, “Becker”, and “Curb Your Enthusiasm”.

“Cheers” ran until 1993, ending when Danson decided that 11 seasons of portraying an aging playboy was enough.

By the end of its run, “Cheers” was watched by over 26 million viewers each week. Danson continued to star in motion pictures –

even during his full-time tenure on Cheers -- appearing in the film comedies “Three Men and a Baby” (1987), its sequel “Three Men and a Little Lady” (1990), and “Made in America” (1993), to cite just a few examples.

Indeed, many San Diego girls have become Playboy Bunnies, or Playmates, including Francesca Emerson, originally from San Diego and became a Playboy bunny at the Playboy Club in New York City.

Also, Raquel Pomplun, from San Diego, was named Playboy’s Playmate of the Year in 2013 and was featured on the April 2012 cover. Additionally, Shauna Sand and Vanessa Gleason, both from San Diego, have been featured as Playboy Centerfold Playmates of the Month. And the list goes on!

Many celebrities who were not born in San Diego have decided to live here, or have a 2nd home in San Diego County.

Escondido Library on the Move The Escondido Public Library is set to undergo significant infrastructure repairs and upgrades in 2025. To ensure continued service during this period, the Library will temporarily relocate to a space within North County Mall, with operations expected to commence on May 27, 2025, and continue for approximately one year.

Man About Town Freidrich Gomez’s cover story this week got me to thinking back on the time I spent with Dick Clark . . . late 1968 and 1969, when I managed his radio station in Santa Barbara.

My secretary, Peggy Rogers, had been Gene Autry’s secretary for many years and was now part of the Dick Clark empire. Peggy and her mom lived in Santa Barbara and she was at the radio station (KGUD) when I arrived, and she remained behind when I left for San Diego.

Gene Autry would call Peggy fairly often, just to talk over old times. I never met Gene Autry but always

Thanks to Dick, we often got invites to soirees that he would put on in Hollywood. I remember one show in particular where we got to meet Glen Campbell, when he was on top of the musical world. Young, handsome, talented. Cocaine had not yet taken its toll on him. He has since passed away but back then?

We met Hank Thompson and his Brazos Valley Boys . . . a number of other country stars. Food was tops, we sat at Dick Clark’s table . . . but didn’t see that much of him as he was all over the arena, the studio, and the stage, making sure the show flowed smoothly.

I remember my ex, Mary, was understandably upset with me for not taking her to Hollywood for the event. She would love to have met Glen Campbell . . . but I honestly

16-Year-Old Boy Killed in Solo Motorcycle Crash A 16-year-old Escondido boy died Sunday morning when he crashed his motorcycle on Bear Valley Pkwy near Canyon Road.

The boy, whose identity is not being released at this time, was riding north with another juvenile motorcyclist when he struck the right curb and lost control. Witnesses stopped to attempt aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Both directions of Bear Valley Parkway remained closed for several hours while police investigated and documented the scene.

didn’t know what the plans were when Dick invited us down for “a get together.” I thought it might just be a business meeting and she, Mary, would be bored. I had no idea, before we left Santa Barbara, that we were gonna be in the middle of show biz history and be surrounded by musical stars.

KGUD was a country music station . . . so it was natural that we went to an awards show that featured top country stars. Aside from Glen Campbell and Hank Thompson, I can’t remember who all else was there. Needless to say, there was plenty of glitter and plenty of big money floating around. (Dick also owned a radio station in Riverside . . . not sure if that was country music format or not; it’s been a few years).

Later that year we staged a country music show at the Granada Theatre (our studios were on the eight floor of the Granada Theatre building). I had the honor of introducing Dick Clark . . . who then proceeded to emcee the rest of the show. The cast was that from the Melody Ranch Show that played on live tv in LA every Saturday. Mary was there that

The story does NOT end with Jesus on the cross. Three days later Jesus bodily rose from the grave (again fulfilling prophecy) and is alive TODAY. There are many witnesses who saw Him, spoke with Him, and even ate with Him after his resurrection. Also there were many witnesses when He ascended back to “heaven,” to be with God the Father. Jesus, God the Son, is alive today.

night . . .and, again . . . I screwed up. I forgot to introduce Mary to Dick Clark. I was so busy working backstage and trying to ensure that all went well that time just got away from me and, before we knew it, the show was over and we all went our separate ways.

I saw Dick Clark reasonably often . . . but most of my dealings were with “Poppa Clark,” Dick’s dad. A nice old gent . . . sharp business man.

He had been a manager of big radio stations back east, so was a great help with business ideas. (Dick had gotten his start in the mail room, later on the air, at the station his dad managed). There was some kind of medical or mental problem with Dick’s mom. I met her once and she seemed kinda distant. I think she may have been in the early stages of dementia. We knew a bit less about it then than we do now.

Poppa Clark, however, was always sharp as a tack. I enjoyed his company. Occasionally, Poppa Clark would bring Fran LaMaina along.

We’ve seen mega-billionaire Bill Gates and famed American singer, songwriter, and talented pianist, Alicia Keys, purchase homes in La Jolla and Del Mar, respectively.

And while it is true that Bill Gates has homes in multiple states, he currently owns two homes in California – one in Del Mar and the other in Rancho Santa Fe. According to the Wall Street Journal, the tech entrepreneur and his wife Melinda doled out a cool $43 million for a six-bedroom oceanfront home in Del Mar in March 2020.

However, it is Bill Gates’ sprawling, luxury residence in Rancho Santa Fe that has, allegedly, become his unabashed favourite.

And for plenty good reason.

Dick had a reputation as being very tight fisted with a dollar. I never found that to be the case. I thought he was very generous with me. I never had a complaint with him. I thought he paid me very well together with all kinds of benefits.

Poppa and Momma Clark are long since gone . . . and, now, at age 82, so is the Eternal Youth, Dick Clark.

He treated me well . . . I enjoyed working with and for him. He’s left me with pleasant memories.

Rest in Peace. *** The Romantic . . .

A friend of mine in Omaha told me she had been essentially snowed in due to 9” of snow. I thought that was bad - but I had lived through that many times before when I lived back in the mid-west, both in Omaha and, later, in Chicago.

Then I heard on the news today that

Prince Philip visited both Rancho Santa Fe and Santa Anita Racetrack, and it was the former (Rancho Santa Fe) that ultimately hosted the majority of the equestrian competitions.

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER HAD A HOME IN RANCHO SANTA FE PRIOR TO HIS DIVORCE. The San Diego Reader reports that Rancho Santa Fe attracts a mix of Hollywood stars and notables like Bill Murray, Bill Gates, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger was once listed as a resident of Rancho Santa Fe. The Terminator and

his ex-wife, Maria Shriver, were known to reside in the area for many years.

What a romantic scene I thought . . . and then I thought . . . we’re up on top of a Norwegian mountain, a lovely, pristine site . . . an inviting snow drift . . . and we were all alone. Me and my then-wife, Mary.

The romantic in me recalled many nights of a soft, heavy carpet of fresh snow . . . and the quiet silence that descends after a fresh snowfall.

There sometimes is a romance to snow. But not always.

The romantic in me came rushing to the fore and we headed for the snow drift fully determined to make love in this wonderfully magic site . . . to create a memory that would last for years to come.

I can remember one time, for example, when traveling to Norway. We were driving north from Oslo up to the more northern areas of Norway . . . headed for a town called Sauda, right at the foot of the Sauda Fjord.

En route we traveled over some lovely mountain passes ... beautiful views that only cinematographers and shepherds normally see ... and we were there!

Friend, I have to tell you . . . it is not particularly romantic to attempt to make love in a snow drift . . . no matter how beautiful it is . . . it is still cold! Cold as hell! Not for just one party to the endeavor but to both! Somehow, it just doesn’t seem to work.

I remember seeing large herds of sheep in the meadows below . . . beautiful isolated farm houses dotted here and there . . . but here, where we were, complete isolation.

Not a soul within miles.

I noticed a beautiful little area . . . a small grassy meadow, then an area circled by large boulders . . . and a large snow drift nestled among the boulders and close to the meadow.

Quickly, the romantic in me came to its senses and addressed the realistic element of life.

We scurried back to our nice warm rental car and continued our journey.

A bit later we had descended to this marvelous grassy meadow . . . a soft breeze bounced around among the alders and pines and whispered gently through the grasses.

What a romantic spot, I thought.

And then the romantic in me came

I could almost hear Julie Andrews singing a love song from “A Sound of Music.”

Friend, I have to tell you . . . grassy meadows are not as nice as they appear in the movies . . . nor as nice as they appear from the roadway. You find that once you park your car and walk into that romantic meadow and its whispering grasses . . . those meadows have hundreds of thousands of bugs and insects and they jump up and nip you and become something of a bother. Who, in there right mind, would even consider lying down in a grassy meadow and even attempt to make love?

Once again my cloudy romantic mind was overtaken by Mr. Realism and we sadly walked back to our nice, warm, insect free rental car and continued our journey to Sauda.

5th District Supervisor • Jim Desmond It’s Time to End Veteran Homelessness in San Diego County At Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, I brought forward a Board Letter titled Ending Veteran Homelessness. This is not just a policy proposal — it’s a moral responsibility.

San Diego is home to over 240,000 veterans, and while we’ve made some progress, we must do more.

Veterans face unique challenges during their transition to civilian life: mental health struggles, limited access to services, and an increasingly unaffordable housing market. These challenges, left unaddressed, lead far too many into homelessness.

We talk a lot about homelessness — but what weighs most heavily on me is this: there are veterans sleeping on our streets.

These are men and women who wore the uniform, who put their lives on the line for our freedom — and now, too many of them are without a place to call home.

That is simply unacceptable in a country as great as ours.

My proposal takes a bold, datadriven approach to accelerate our efforts: • Engage landlords directly through a targeted social media campaign to expand participation in the HUD-VASH housing program.

• Create a veteran-specific byname list to ensure every home-

less veteran is accounted for and connected to services.

• Explore a landlord assurance fund to reduce risk and incentivize property owners to house veterans.

• Coordinate region wide with other jurisdictions to ensure no veteran is overlooked.

We owe our veterans more than words — we owe them action.

With the right strategy, commitment, and urgency, we can make veteran homelessness in San Diego a thing of the past.

Let’s get this done.

Just before 1978, Dick Van Dyke and his wife Marjorie sold their home in Coronado and moved to a ranch in Arizona, but, the Van Dykes expressed bittersweet sentiment and stated that they looked forward to “frequent visits” in returning to Coronado.

And they did, multiple times through the ensuing years.

And even at the great age of 90, the great entertainer was practically mobbed while signing autographs at the Town and County hotel in San Diego in 2016, during one of his many return visits.

The beloved actor – and former San Diegan -- proved he could still draw a crowd!

90-years-olde at the time, Dick Van Dyke was a keynote speaker at the “Aging Summit 2016” of which 10News is a proud media sponsor and reported on his visit here.

Looking about the audience at that Aging Summit 2016, he quipped to loud laughter: “It’s really good to see somebody my age!”

When asked what was his secret in attaining his great age of 90, he simply answered: “Keep moving!”

RVshare is keeping my deposit! Can you make them return it?

First, we should probably back up and talk about RVshare. Think Airbnb for recreational vehicles.

The rental process works about the same, except that some of its policies more closely resemble those of a car rental company.

Why is RVshare holding Aaron Olbrich’s $1,500 deposit after he returns his rental van? And can he ever get his money back?

Q: I rented a Mercedes van for two weeks through RVshare, a rental company. It rained on the way home and water leaked through the air-conditioner vent.

According to RVshare’s terms of service, acts of God such as rain, hail and wind are the renter’s responsibility. At the same time, there’s an implied warranty that the RV you rent is roadworthy and that the roof won’t leak.

After I returned the van, RVshare charged me by keeping my $1,500 deposit.

Here are a few facts about our rental. First, when it rained, the air-conditioner vent would leak. The owner of the van lied and said I left the vent open. I have a video, but because they don’t have a before and after video they are denying my deposit.

Another fact: The owner of the van put it back in service right away.

So where’s the damage?

I had to shorten my trip by a day because of the leaky van.

Are you a bad hotel guest? Here’s how to know.

A few hours after Matt Rogers checked into his hotel in Dallas, he heard rhythmic grunting noises outside his door. They were coming from one of the worst hotel guests ever.

“He was doing his workout in the hallway,” recalls Rogers. “It was really obnoxious.”

Rogers knows a thing or two about working out -- he’s a personal trainer himself -- but he says there’s a time and a place for it. The guest should have headed to the hotel gym, which was open at the time.

But, for heaven’s sake, keep it down in the hallway.

That’s not the worst of it: Apparently, the obnoxious hotel guest was totally unaware that he was being, well, so obnoxious.

How can hotel guests be so annoying?

Annoying hotel guests will be front and center again this summer as Americans embark on their annual vacations. They’ll make noise, trash rooms, ignore the house rules and irritate other travelers. And, like the guy working out in Rogers’ hallway, they’ll have no idea that they are the world’s worst hotel guests.

“They forget that they’re not in their own living room,” says Rachel Wagner, an etiquette expert.

“If they’re with family members or sports team members for an event, it’s easy and natural to continue conversations down the hall after getting off the elevator, forgetting that others may have an early morning flight and are trying to sleep.”

My pet peeve is hotel guests who think they’re shooting an adult movie next door. Look, if you’re going to make the kind of noise that keeps the neighbors up all night, maybe you should wait until you get home. Just a suggestion.

It turns out there’s a litmus test -- three simple questions -- that will help you know if you’re a bad guest. I’ll also tell you how to be a good guest. And if you think it’s too late for you, I have some hopeful news. I’ll get to that in a sec.

How to tell if you’re the world’s worst hotel guest.

So here we are, having to do something your parents should have taught you. I’m about to reveal how you can know if you’re the world’s worst hotel guest. (OK, technically, I’m going to defer to my expert sources.) Here are the questions you should ask:

Illustration by Dustin Elliott Are you violating any of the house rules? Hotels post house rules and will often share them with you when you check in. For example, they’ll tell you when it’s check-out time -- usually noon.

They’ll tell you what’s allowed in your room, and what isn’t (no parties, no weapons). They’ll also disclose the hotel’s “quiet” hours. And, of course, stealing is never allowed. “Simple acts like lowering your voice in common areas can make a big difference,” says Raymond Yorke, a spokesman for Redpoint Travel Protection. If you’re not following the rules, chances are you’re a bad hotel guest.

Are you getting a lot of attention from the hotel staff? “You can know you are a bad guest if the hotel’s staff are paying extra attention to you, more than any other guests,” says Sarah Bajc, owner of Camaroncito EcoResort & Beach, an all-inclusive eco-resort on the Caribbean coast of Panama.

“They will be checking in with you more proactively, ensuring you are OK.” Wait, isn’t that what hotels are supposed to do with guests -- take good care of them? “Most good guests are self-sufficient and happy to ask for something without being needy,” says Bajc. Good to know.

Are you doing something that would be unacceptable outside the hotel? Here’s a fact: Paying for a hotel room doesn’t give you the right to do whatever you want.

Brenda Beltrán remembers a recent hotel stay in Madrid with a particularly difficult guest. He yelled into his phone while walking down the hallway. He made bizarre complaints about the hotel vibrating.

And he demanded extra pillows be

delivered to his room -- then berated the staff for interrupting him when they delivered the cushions.

“He made everyone tense,” recalls Beltrán, who works for a telecommunications company.

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, chances are you’re a bad hotel guest. So how are you supposed to behave? For the answer, I turned to Wagner, our etiquette expert.

How an etiquette professional behaves at a hotel.

Wagner shared her experience during a 13-night stay at a Hilton property in Fort Lauderdale, where she was caring for her husband as he recuperated from surgery. Her approach to being a good guest is simple yet effective: be courteous, thoughtful, and respectful.

“I try to be respectful when checking in or when I need something,” Wagner explains. “I don’t request housekeeping every day -- only every two to three days.

I leave dirty towels in a neatly folded stack on the bathroom floor, not strewn around. And I leave a tip on the pillow each day that housekeeping is provided, usually $4 to $5.”

But it’s not just about the room or the tipping. Wagner makes it a point to acknowledge the hard work of the housekeeping staff whenever she encounters them.

“When I see housekeeping staff in the hallway, I always smile and say, ‘Good morning, have a great day.’

They work hard, and I want them to feel valued and appreciated. It’s a small thing, but it can make a big difference,” she says.

Even if you’re the worst hotel guest ever, there’s still hope.

If you feel like you’ve already crossed the line into bad guest territory, don’t worry. There’s hope for you. Take, for instance, the story of Nick Burchill, also known as the worst hotel guest ever.

Burchill had opened his window and left boxes of pepperoni pizza in his hotel room at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, British Columbia. It attracted a flock of hungry seagulls that tore into the takeout and defaced his room. After the incident, the hotel banned him for life.

Burchill wrote an apology to the hotel 17 years later.

“I have matured and I admit responsibility for my actions,” he said. “I come to you, hat-in-hand, to apologize for the damage I had indirectly come to cause and to ask you to reconsider my lifetime ban from the property.”

The Fairmont lifted his ban.

So, if you’ve been a bit of a Burchill in the past, don’t worry. Just remember to be polite, follow the rules, and treat the hotel staff with respect. And maybe, don’t leave the pizza out where the seagulls can find it.

Religion, Obsession, or Revelation?

Much to my surprise, I found it interesting to learn that despite the mega-churches and community religious centers, only 47% of Americans claim to be religious. A religious person believes in a supernatural being or power called a God or gods. This percentage has changed over the years, from eighty percent. America was once called a Christian Pastor Huls nation. We would be hard-pressed to claim that today, with the influx of large Muslim and Asian groups with radically different belief systems. In fact, some challenge the claim on our coinage with “In God We Trust” because only 56% of Americans believe in God as described in the Bible. It is not so much a denial of God but rather an understanding of this God. The need to share the belief in God is of greater interest to me. Where do we get the idea that people have to believe in a God, and especially the God we believe in? A belief in the God of the Bible began around 4,000 years ago with the Hebrew patriarch Abraham, who lived in what is now modern-day Iraq, in the region of Mesopotamia. There, this man heard the voice of God claiming to be the one and only true God of not only the world but the entire universe. Over a century ago, this belief was instilled in the Hebrews, who later became known as the Jews. They now have the cultural and racial destination given to these people today by the God of the Bible. These people did not insist that all humanity had to believe in this God, but they claimed to believe in the only and true God. An insistence to believe and follow Him, at least for the Jews, was prompted by a religious group in the days of Jesus known as the Pharisees. Keeping the Sabbath and not eating certain foods were the obsessions of this religion.

The obsession with this faith took hold in the Christian movement led by Christianized Roman Emperors.

This obsession continued into the Middle Ages with the Inquisition, forcing men like Copernicus to recant teachings that contradicted the church. It was not a Revelation from God but an obsession of church leaders.

This obsession was carried out in related religions such as Islam, where forced beliefs were mandatory, or suffering death. This forced belief also entered early American churches, despite the Constitutional right to freedom of religion. That freedom is suppressed in many denominations with threats of God’s judgment and fear of hell, as many church leaders teach. Even if behavior or different beliefs are contrary to the leaders’ and the church’s policies, they are not followed. It has become an obsession for many religious groups.

What leads to those obsessions by church leaders and even parents? It is often the belief of contrary teachings that one will go to hell instead of heaven. Church leaders and family members often believe they have the key to truth, often an obsession stemming from their own insecurity rather than a true revelation from God. It is best to ask if what one wants for others is one’s obsession or a true revelation from God. Pastor Huls

Baba is Rancho Coastal Humane Society’s pet of the week. He’s a 7-yearold, 10-pound, male, Seal Point Siamese mix cat.

Baba was surrendered to a crowded shelter when his owner died. He was transferred to Rancho Coastal Humane Society through Friends of County Animal Shelters (FOCAS). He’s a tender-hearted boy with a soft voice and a love for quiet moments.

The $75 adoption fee for Baba includes medical exam, neuter, up to date vaccinations, and registered microchip. If his adopter is 60 or older, the fee will be paid by a Rancho Coastal Humane Society benefactor.

AI -Artificial Intelligence DI or Digital Immigrant - An internet user forty years or older DN or Digital Native - An Internet user 30 years or younger IW or Intelligent Web - the combination of broad band Internet and AI “I don’t look good naked any more, I’m a deep fried double wide version of the man I used to be”. That’s a line from “Snake Oil Willie’s” musical lament on aging. Nature designed humans to “peak” in our reproductive years. After 40 maintaining the appearance of youthful strength and vigor gets harder every year. It seems that nature’s interest in us starts to fade when we hit middle age. In past ages, senior

generations were a valued sources of history, culture, wit and wisdom.

In recent years technology found ways to store, retrieve and dispense information and diminished older generations value as warehouses of knowledge and lore. At the beginning of the 21st century we created the IW by combining AI with broadband Internet access.

The ready availability of stored information greatly reduced the need for the verbal transmission of lore to successive generations thus reducing the value of older adults as a means for the storage and transmission of information.

In the late 19th century the average lifespan of an American was forty years. Americans could expect to expire around the end of their child bearing years. The expectation of an American born in 1885 was to be born, raised, educated, married, raise a family and die all by the age of 40! Compare that to Americans born 100 years later. With modern of life-spans approaching 80 years, our lives would be similar up until the age of 40. Then, instead dying, modern humans become grandparents and live on for another 40 years.

In a single century American’s saw life-spans double. Technology and the IW have mostly relieved older generations of the obligation to pass knowledge and lore along to the younger generations. We (DIs) are the last generations to have formed our internal cognition without exposure to the IW. Today’s DIs use

the IW extensively but regard its content to be external and needing to be parsed by their internal cognitive resources. To DIs, the internal cognitive resources are the primary judge of external information. The younger DNs have no such qualms. For them the IW has always been a part of their internal cognition. The presence of the IW inhibited DN’s development of complete and comprehensive internal cognitive resources. Machine based AI reasoning and IW memory took the place of their underdeveloped internal cognition.

This marriage of the high speed World Wide Web with Artificial Intelligence in 2001 marks only the beginning of the “Artificial Intelligence” age. This ever growing, ever improving technology still in its infancy is already providing

solutions and answers that eclipse human capabilities. There is no question that AI marks a turning point in human history. Its access and storage devices will change and improve in ways we can’t even imagine. AI will continue to improve leaving our internal cognitive abilities far behind. How will it change us? What will our future be like? We can only guess.

There is at least one certainty. We DIs will all be gone before the end of this Century and the planet will belong to humans who share their cognitive development with machine based AI. We DIs will hold an important place in the history as the last humans to exist without the benefit of internally integrated AI. Move over Dodo birds, here we come.

The Invisible Puppies and Kittens shelter to another. When he arrived at RCHS through our FOCAS program he went into the foster home of a volunteer who had a dog. The volunteer cared for him, but much of the credit goes to her dog, who taught the puppy “dog stuff” that he had never learned.

Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) and other shelters in San Diego County have puppies and kittens that you can’t see. It’s not hocus pokus. They’re in foster care with trained volunteers and staff members.

Why would we do that? There are lots of reasons.

• When a four-month-old puppy arrived at a shelter, he had never had a home. He had spent his life being bounced from one

• A cat and her five newborn kittens arrived at a nearby shelter. When the staff ran out of “Oooh’s” and “Awww’s” they realized they weren’t equipped to care for this mom and her babies for the next two months. In many parts of the country, that would have been the end of the story. Not here. The little family was transferred to RCHS. They went into foster care. When the kittens were eight weeks old, they were adopted and so was their mother.

• We have adult dogs staying in foster homes because they stress

out in their kennels. These dogs hide in the back, hoping that nobody sees them. Or they come charging up to the gate, barking at potential adopters. Once they get out of the kennels, they’re normal, happy dogs. In foster care they’re getting the special attention and socialization they need to keep them adoptable and ready for their new lives.

• Same thing with cats. If you take a cat that’s been in the same home all its life, then it loses its

home and moves into the cattery, that’s a tough transition.

Some adjust and make friends with the other cats. Others hide under their blankets and adopters never see them. Foster care can be their best option.

So…yeah. We have dogs and cats you can’t see at the shelter. They’re in foster care. Thanks to their fosters, they’ll be adopted into the homes they deserve.

Maybe you should be a foster.

I think you might have fixed this by sending a brief, polite appeal to one of the RVshare executives I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. This appeared to be enough of a borderline case to merit a second look.

I recommend reviewing the terms of your rental carefully before you drive away in a car, van or recreational vehicle. If you are worried, you can always purchase insurance that will cover you in case of an accident or damage caused by inclement weather.

I checked with RVshare about your case. A representative said you did indeed have insurance, but you chose the basic insurance policy offering liability coverage, windshield damage, and campsite liability. You also put down a required $1,500 security deposit.

RVshare says you had the option of adding a $79 Security Deposit waiver, but declined. I think you were probably feeling a little fee fatigue at that point, which is completely understandable. If you had chosen the waiver, you would have avoided the $1,500 fee, according to RVshare.

The County’s latest Live Well on Wheels (Live WoW) bus made its debut this month and will soon hit the road. It expands the fleet of two existing Live WoWs and a recently added HIV, STD, and Hepatitis Live WoW bringing the total number to four mobile vehicles available for use.

The newest Live WoW also can be used for dental services, such as screenings and tooth sealants. Other potential uses include emergency public health preparedness response training. The Live WoW would also be available to respond to natural or man-made disasters.

The nearly 12-foot-long Winnebago Freightliner will serve as a rolling public health resource, expanding the County’s ability to meet people where they are and offer a wide variety of programs and services to individuals right in their own neighborhoods.

Since the first Live WoW debuted in July 2021, the mobile offices have supported over 1,400 community events across the region providing more than 117,000 service interactions, including almost 16,000 COVID-19, flu, and general vaccinations.

Live WoWs can be outfitted to meet the needs of the community. Common uses are for delivering outreach for public benefits, providing educational health information, and giving vaccinations.

The County’s Live Well on Wheels mobile vehicles are dispatched by the County and made available to the community for events.

RVshare says it’s been working with you during the dispute process. If there’s a takeaway from this case, it’s that you need to choose your insurance coverage carefully -- especially when renting a specialty vehicle like an RV. But there’s also a lesson learned for RVshare. Maybe it offers too many insurance options, which confuses its customers. Why not just include insurance in all rentals, which would eliminate future cases like yours?

There was another time, this time in Omaha, with an old girl friend . . . and we were on the slopes of a golf course, the aroma of freshly mowed grass filling the air . . . a lovely summer morning. Our eyes met and we were both of the same mind . . . romance sometimes does that to people.

It just seemed to be the most perfectly normal thing to do . . . to embrace each other, to exchange smouldering kisses, to lay down on the freshly mowed grass, and let romance take over.

A great idea it seemed at the time . . . but then two obstacles appeared.

There were maintenance crews on the golf course. We were not alone.

We were clearly visible to them and they to us. And, of course, our old friends, the insects, were hopping about in the grass and onto us.

Another wonderfully romantic memory that was dashed before it was even created.

Still, on another occasion, when I was but a young lad, I was visiting in Minnesota and a certain young lady was invited to meet me in a hay mow (kind of like an attic in a barn, where hay is stored). I preceded her and awaited her arrival. In short order, she arrived and we began to get very well acquainted.

Suddenly, a rotten little freckle faced red-headed baby sister of the young lady in question popped her head up out of a hole in the floor, looked at us and shouted . . . “I’m tellin’ . !” Her name was Diane.

Somehow I never forgot the little rascals name. I never did like her after that, either.

We departed that hay mow and barn in a hurry.

I guess somewhere along the line I learned my lesson and decided to only let the romantic in me take over . . . when we were indoors. In a proper and comfortable location.

Sometimes life just ain’t like the movies.
