This month of January 2023 marks the historic 70th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s first recorded song back in 1953 at the age of 18.
Ironically, the title of his first-ever song, “My Happiness,” which was lovingly dedicated to his mother Gladys, belied a secret life of Elvis which was anything but happy. It was a highly eccentric, conflicted, confused, and tormented life which,
sadly and tragically, ended at the young age of 42.
This exclusive January report to The Paper unveils the secret life of Elvis Presley which the world never knew.

other time, another world, a different culture, and a different America.
DATELINE:
1950s & 1960s AMERICA It is another warm night at Graceland and a young Elvis Aaron Presley surrenders his lanky 6’ frame comfortably into his favourite outdoor lounge chair. The one he took from the set of his 1963 film, “Fun in Acapulco.”
Though the film setting of Fun in
Acapulco took place in early January 1963 in various hot spots of Acapulco, Mexico, Presley – ironically – was not even on Mexican soil. His own movie scenes had to be taken at the Paramount studios in Hollywood later that year, in March.
The public never knew it, but, all the Acapulco scenery and background shots in the movie were ‘magically’ added onto Presley’s scenes – making it all look as if he were really there.

Reason being that the globallypopular Elvis was declared “persona non grata” (person not welcome) by the Mexican authorities. The “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” had already been banned from radio airplay before that, during which his records were burned in front of the city’s main square, El Zocalo.
The Mexican media alleged that Elvis had made incendiary remarks about Mexican women which exploded in the press -- and which re-surfaced time and again – each time with increased venom from the Mexican populace.
It all began when Elvis was interviewed in Tijuana, Mexico, on 19 February 1957. When the interviewer back then inquired if Presley would one day like to sing in Mexico, the Memphis phenomenon gave a surly, but honest, reply.
He answered no.
It was reported that he found Mexico to be a distasteful and dirty country. Not leaving good enough alone, Elvis’ follow-up statement was like throwing a bag of rattlesnakes into a crowd: “I’d rather kiss three African-Americans than a single Mexican woman.”
The remark caused panic-like re-

action among Elvis promoters and ignited a pyrotechnical display of anger among Mexican government officials.
The remark was resurrected by Mexico City’s largest and most influential newspaper at the time, El Zocalo. It recreated a firestorm of controversy and ‘Elvis-hatred’ south of the border, and left Elvis at Hollywood’s Paramount Studios, filming his so-called Acapulco ‘location’ shots well north of the Mexican border.
Though the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was, himself, primarily of Western European mixture, including ScotsIrish, German, and some French Norman influence, he proudly voiced his Native American roots and was often photographed in full Native American regalia. He often spoke of his great-great-grandmother, whose Native American name was Morning White Dove (1800-1835) and she was a fullblooded Cherokee, making Elvis, himself, 1/16 Cherokee.
He never spoke of his anti-Mexican remarks openly. Partially because he felt hurt that it was all a fabrication in the first place, which it was. Only later, after his death, would elements of wrongdoing come to light regarding his so-called disparaging, ethnic remarks.

Curtis & Leroy saw an ad in the Starkville Daily in Starkville, MS. and bought a mule for $100.
The farmer agreed to deliver the mule the next day.
The next morning the farmer drove up and said,”Sorry, fellows, I have some bad news, the mule died last night.”
Curtis & Leroy replied, “Well, then just give us our money back.”
The farmer said,”Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.”
They said, “OK then, just bring us the dead mule.”
The farmer asked, “What in the world ya’ll gonna do with a dead mule?”
Curtis said, “We gonna raffle him off.”
The farmer said, “You can’t raffle off a dead mule!”
Leroy said, “We shore can! Heck, we don’t hafta tell nobody he’s dead!”
“Refried Elvis: The Rise of the Mexican Counterculture,” cogent author, Eric Zolov, found a startling paper trail which traced to a Herbe Pompeyo of Polygram Records in Mexico City. Pompeyo, in turn, points to a high-up Mexican political figure who ambitiously had high hopes of attaining Elvis Presley to sing at one of his lavish, private parties. Ostensibly, the Mexican political figure sent Elvis a blank check to fill in as he thought was fair pay.
According to Eric Zolov, Elvis’ refusal to perform begat bad blood and placed revenge into the heart of the powerful Mexican political figure (not named) who was not used to being turned down. Zolov explains: “Presley, according to the story, returned the blank check, so the politico -- extremely offended – (invented) the storyline about Elvis not liking Mexican women.”

But on this particular warm night at the nearly 14 acres that is Graceland, Elvis was in his favourite lounge chair, near the pool, which rippled and dazzled in a kaleidoscope of reflection under the soft moonlight. Elvis purchased Graceland when he was only 22, in 1957, at the tune of $102,500 – a tidy sum back then.
“What’d you fellers ever do with that dead mule?”
They said,”We raffled him off like we said we wuz gonna do.”
Leroy said,”Shucks, we sold 500 tickets fer two dollars apiece and made a profit of $998.”
The farmer said,”My Lord, didn’t anyone complain?”
Curtis said, “Well, the feller who won got upset. So we gave him his two dollars back.”

I offer my opponents a bargain: if they will stop telling lies about us, I will stop telling the truth about them. ~Adlai Stevenson,
One of the most unexpected facts is that Graceland was never, initially, called that by Presley. It was built in 1939 by Dr. Thomas Moore and his wife, Ruth, on a 500-acre farm dubbed “Graceland,” in honour of the original owner’s daughter, Grace, who was Ruth Moore’s great aunt. The Moore’s whitecolumned home also came to be known as Graceland, just as the farm was. Elvis had never before heard of the name Graceland – until he purchased the property, liked the sound of it, and kept the name, which is world-renowned today. And synonymous with Presley, himself.
Elvis knew of all these antecedents as he sat, poolside, eating his favourite sandwich: peanut butter, bacon, banana, and honey – on toasted bread (always better toasted). He hated fish. He wouldn’t even allow his wife, Priscilla, to eat fish in any form or fashion, including tuna sandwiches. Presley was forever sensitive to smells. His romance with actress, Natalie Wood, was short-lived because, as the story leaked out – the Memphis megastar did not like the way she smelled.
Elvis did greatly fancy French superstar, Brigitte Bardot, and forever regretted not making her acquain-

However, he determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, & only 2% were killed by an impact with a car. Kansas then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine the disproportionate percentages for truck versus car kill.
The Ornithological Behaviorist determined the cause in short order.

tance while stationed overseas. While overseas he discovered the joy of smoking thin German cigars, an appreciation he inherited when stationed in Germany, while in U.S. Army uniform. His German fans greatly loved Elvis Presley and called him the “Rock and Roll Matador,” because of his alternating stiff-legged poses on stage, as if whisking a cape over the shoulder blades of a charging bull.
American-born, Priscilla Presley, spoke German when she attended school there (Deutschland), but confessed to forgetting most of it. When she was asked in an interview on 18 April 2015, if she still spoke German, she replied: “I took German while going to school in Germany but have forgotten most of it.”
As he sat, leisurely lounging in his cabana chaise chair, his right hand slowly but deliberately reached downward, to his right side till his warm fingers felt the familiar touch of cold steel. The steel of a long barrel Colt 45 revolver. Presley loved firearms, owning 37 handguns, derringers, M-16s and other rifles, and even a Thompson submachine gun.
But tonight, his method-of-choice would be to start with the Colt 45, as from the Olde Wild West. Holding the firearm, Presley delighted in anticipation of a favourite nocturnal routine of his, which was about to commence. First, he surveyed his Olympic-sized swimming pool close to his chair, and upon which he had placed numerous light bulbs, which now floated freely in all directions.
All placed there for target practice, of course.
One by one, he shot till one-by-one the bulbs exploded into a million pieces, under an otherwise peaceful moonlit evening. If necessary, he would graduate to the greater accuracy of a rifle, complete with scope.
On one occasion, a ricocheted bullet hit a parked car beyond the estate’s walls. The car’s owner was quickly pacified by the Memphis Mafia when they presented him with a brand new El Dorado Cadillac. Such an auspicious presentation of a luxury automobile mysteriously renders the new owner with permanent amnesia: “What bullet?”
Most members at Graceland knew which nights to stay clear of the Graceland swimming pool area. Sometimes the sheriff and Memphis Chief of Police would be with the legendary singer, sipping his
famous mint juleps, while the King took target practice.
If anyone dared call the sheriff or police to render a noise complaint over Presley’s gunshots, such reports would sometimes have to be rerouted to Graceland, where these respective heads of law enforcement often sat with Elvis as he took aim at floating light bulbs. These law officials, themselves, never took target practice. That would be considered highly inappropriate; not to mention a threat to the King if they proved a better shot.
Such shootings were not unusual for the undisputed ruler of rock ‘n’ roll.
Far from it.
According to many of the Memphis Mafia, Elvis was known to shoot the television set whenever he saw either singer Robert Goulet or Mel Torme on the screen. These were two singers which he intensely disliked.
The reasoning behind Elvis Presley not liking either Robert Goulet or Mel Torme has gone the way of pure speculation, depending on the sources, which all vary. However, the primary reason regarding his disdain for Robert Goulet is difficult to dismiss. According to television host, Mike Douglas, who hosted his own television show (“The Mike Douglas Show”), Presley had good reason to vilify Goulet on personal grounds. When singer-actor, Goulet, appeared as a guest on The Mike Douglas Show, Elvis shot the TV set when Goulet’s image appeared on the screen.
This shootout scenario occurred when Elvis was performing in Las Vegas, at the International Hotel. Presley was in penthouse suite room 3000 on the 30th floor, which stretched across the entire top floor for expanded privacy. When Elvis first spotted Robert Goulet on his 25-inch RCA television set he froze and shouted: “Get that shit outta my house!”
Elvis then pulled out his gun and shot Robert Goulet . . . on television.
Since the TV-shooting occurred on hotel property by a high-profile entertainer, the print and visual media had a field day covering the incident in sensationalised-fashion, around the world, in different languages.

Fatal Traffic Collison, Cannon Road at N/B I-5 Off-Ramp
CARLSBAD-Calif. – On January 17, 2023, at 4:45 p.m. the City of Carlsbad Police Department responded to the intersection of Cannon Road at the N/B I-5 off-ramp due to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a motorcyclist.
On arrival, officers found that a Kawasaki motorcycle had collided into a Toyota minivan. The motorcycle rider, a 67-year-old male, was ejected and injured in the roadway. The injured male was treated by fire personnel at the scene and transported to a local trauma center. The motorcyclist was pronounced deceased upon arrival at the hospital.
Per witnesses, the motorcycle rider was traveling eastbound on Cannon Road and entered the intersection against a red light, colliding into the minivan that was exiting the N/B I-5 off-ramp.
The driver of the minivan, a 72year-old female, remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.
The identity of the deceased motorcyclist is being withheld at this time pending the notification of his next of kin.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation, and it is not believed drugs or alcohol were a factor. The intersection of Cannon Road and the N/B I-5 off-ramp will be closed for several hours so investigators can process the scene of the collision.
The Carlsbad Police Department is seeking additional witnesses to the collision, and request they contact Accident Investigator Officer Adam Bentley with any information.

San Marcos splash pads to close during the off-season
Beginning in February, San Marcos will implement an off-season closure of the City’s five splash pads to support water conservation. The splash pad closures at the Buelow, Lakeview, Mulberry, San Elijo and Sunset parks will start on Feb. 1 and conclude on Mar. 15.
Looking ahead, the off-season closure will be in place annually during historically low usage in the fall and winter and reopen for peak usage in the spring and summer. While the splash pads are closed, other park amenities will be open for the community’s enjoyment.
The City continually monitors local and state water restrictions, and the splash pad off-season closure demonstrates we are mindful of drought restrictions. To learn more about local water restrictions, please visit Vallecitos Water District’s website.

HANGUP:
ney Summer Stephan said today two thieves, known for traveling throughout San Diego County to find elderly victims to prey upon, have been sentenced to local custody and to prison after being convicted of robbery, attempted residential burglary and theft from an elderly person.
The defendants – Daniel Miclescu and Simona Paun – are a husbandand-wife team who targeted three victims last August and September, pretending to sell jewelry before forcefully stealing one victim’s Rolex watch and another victim’s purse containing $850 in cash. The third victim was able to prevent the thieves from accessing her home by quickly slamming the door once the defendants tried to force their way in. She had rebuffed the sellers the previous day in a Mira Mesa parking lot, and they followed her home, unbeknownst to her.
“These type of traveling thieves have been prolific in San Diego County, around California and across the country for the past two years and often approach victims in parking lots at local shopping centers or within residential neighborhoods, in upscale rental vehicles,” DA Stephan said. “Let this prosecution and sentencing be an example to would-be thieves that we will not tolerate these organized criminal acts.”
The defendants are part of nationwide ring involving hundreds of suspects. In a typical case, the suspects contact a victim in a parking lot of a shopping center or while
of a phone call I received two days ago, with only slight paraphrasing.
Upon the hangup I checked my online bank account and, sure enough, there was a record of my timely payments that had been deducted from my account for the past 90 days. Everything was as it should be.
I went online with SDG&E and checked my account. I had a balance due within two weeks. Nothing about past due. No problem. Everything was as it should be.
I like to consider myself as reasonably sophisticated yet this clown on the other end of the phone had me going to the point I was gonna drop what I was doing, head to my bank, withdraw $1000+ in cash and go the the local SDG&E office to make a payment, all to forestall the cutting off of my electricity in what was clearly a terrible mistake and/or understanding.
It was only after I had checked my bank and utility balance that I realized I had been the intended victim of a scam.
Was I angry?
they are out for a walk in their neighborhood. The conversation begins with the suspects asking for directions or telling the victim they were robbed and need assistance. Many times, the suspects say they are from Dubai and need help getting back home. Once the victims begin talking to the suspects and letting their guard down, the suspects use distraction and sleight of hand techniques to steal necklaces, watches, rings, and cash. In some cases, when the suspect is unsuccessful, force is used to steal the jewelry.
The San Diego Police Department is committed to solving these crimes and holding the perpetrators accountable. In the past nine months, detectives have arrested 13 subjects in San Diego and other counties in Southern California, and numerous more suspects are currently under investigation and arrests are pending.
“This is an excellent example of law enforcement partners working together to hold criminals accountable,” said Chief David Nisleit. “We will continue these efforts to protect our communities against these brazen crimes.”
Since the start of 2021, San Diego law enforcement have received more than 75 reports of similar thefts and attempted thefts involving dozens of suspects. Most of the crimes occur in shopping center
You bet!
Then I thought . . . “how many senior citizens do these crooks actually persuade to pay by Xpress Pay? Amounts of $200? $500? In my case, over $1000?”
And, once paid, of course, there is no recourse. You cannot retrieve your money.
If they came close to nailing me ... a reasonably sophisticated guy . . . how easy must it be to dupe others who don’t have direct pay from their banks, or don’t have access to an online SDG&E account to verify they are current?
These crooks should be taken out and shot!
Sadly, there’s very little law enforcement can do. Usually, the perps are outside local jurisdiction.

The Missing Horse

One fine day at an Oklahoma saloon, a cowboy ties his horse to the hitching rail and goes in to the bar. He orders a whisky and proceeds to drink it. Some time and several more drinks later, the cowboy leaves the saloon to find that his horse has been stolen. He calmly walks back into the saloon, draws his pistol and holds it pointed at the ceiling, and proclaims in a loud voice “Someone in this godforsaken place has stolen my horse. This happened to me once before, back in Texas.” Lowering the pitch of his voice, but not losing any volume, he continued “And I DON’T wanna hafta do what I done back in Texas. I’m gonna have one more drink, and my horse better be back when I’m done.”
True to his word, the cowboy holsters his pistol and orders one more drink, and when he finishes it he leaves the saloon to find his horse tied to the rail. He checks his saddle bags and satisfied that nothing is missing, he proceeds to mount up. As he’s preparing to ride away, one brave witness from inside the bar steps up and says “I gotta know - what did you do back in Texas when this happened before?”
The cowboy shrugs and says “I hadda walk home.”

Elvis from page 3
on The Mike Douglas Show begat a circus-like media frenzy – and Elvis was in the center ring. All of which caused Elvis to be concerned about Mike Douglas’ reaction to all these negative news stories.
All of this was duly recorded in Mike Douglas’ biography.
With all this media-fallout, Presley quickly made a call to Douglas, who was in Philadelphia.
Elvis had a congenital stutter, and he fumbled an apology over the phone, after which Mike Douglas reciprocated by inviting the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll to be a guest on his show. Presley was too embarrassed to accept: “Mr. Douglas. Mike. I can’t . . . honest to God. I just can’t.”
(“I’ll Be Right Back: Memories of TV’s Greatest Talk Show,” Mike Douglas biography book, by Simon and Shuster, 1999.)
According to the inner-circle of personal friends of Elvis Presley, he harboured hateful feelings towards Robert Goulet which clearly traced back to the late 1950s, when Elvis was in the U. S. Army overseas. Elvis’ girlfriend at the time was Anita Wood, a singer who was doing shows with Goulet. In writing one of her letters to Presley in Germany, Robert Goulet added a sly, sexually-veiled comment at the bottom of her letter. It was bad judgment on her part to allow it. Even worse for Robert Goulet to write it.
The handwriting by Goulet was in bad taste, with teasing innuendo towards a military soldier serving duty in Europe. Goulet’s handwriting said: “Don’t worry, Elvis.
I’ll take care of Anita while you are gone.”
It was a merciless gesture to a forlorn soldier who anguished to be home. In November of 1959, Elvis wrote his girlfriend, Anita: “I can’t explain to you how I crave you and desire your lips and your body under me, darling.”
It was an unnecessary and cruel taunt by Robert Goulet, since the circumstances were real – that Presley’s girlfriend was beautiful, attractive to many men, away from her lover, and was in the presence of a handsome leading man in “Camelot,” the smash Broadway play Goulet starred in and was proclaimed the next great matinee idol. Neither did it help later on when the New York Daily News Magazine appointed Goulet as: “Just the man to help stamp out rock ‘n’ roll.”
Judy Garland was even star-struck over Robert Goulet’s sexual presence, describing him as a living 8x10 glossy, with blue bedroom eyes.
Garland was not alone in her attraction to Goulet. During Goulet’s concerts, beautiful girls would toss the keys to their hotel rooms, onto his stage. In light of all this, it was a tasteless and unnecessary stab at an absent Elvis to write the Anita Wood postscript.
It was a stab to the heart, which Elvis never forgot and about which most of the public never knew. Long after the passing of Elvis Presley, when Robert Goulet was in his sunset years and asked about the Presley-Goulet schism, Goulet forfeited his honesty and refused Elvis

Committee Assignments for 2023
Most business of the Legislature is conducted by committees. Committees have jurisdiction over specific policy areas, and usually have a Democratic chair and Republican vice chair. Most legislation must pass several committees before a final vote on the Assembly floor. This session, Assembly Speaker Rendon has appointed me to six standing committees.
Ensuring access to affordable healthcare, including covering pre-existing conditions, expanding mental health/substance use disorder treatments and children’s healthcare are important parts of my healthcare advocacy in Sacramento. I look forward to continuing to serve as Vice Chair of the Health Committee, with jurisdiction over legislation involving health insurance, public health care programs, mental health licensing and longterm health care facilities.
I’ll also be serving as Vice Chair of the Rules Committee, which has wide powers over rules governing the Assembly. The Committee’s legislative responsibilities are critical, since all bills being introduced are reviewed by Rules according to their subject matter, and then assigned to the appropriate committees. I will be serving as Vice Chair of the Committee on Emergency Management, which deals with emergency declarations, home-
land security, earthquake mitigation, seismic safety, fire prevention, suppression and mutual aid programs. And I’ll be a member of the Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Management, with members from both the Senate and Assembly, which has oversight authority over these same areas.
My additional committee assignments include the Banking and Finance and Local Government committees. Banking and Finance has jurisdiction over legislation involving financial institutions, real property and consumer finance, securities law, and more. As a member of the Local Government Committee, my experience as a city councilmember will be helpful when considering bills involving land use, housing, agency formation, charter cities, state mandates and other issues with major local impacts.
It’s shaping up to be a very busy year in Sacramento. I’m looking forward to a productive 2023 legislative session.
Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R- Valley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the cities of Poway, Santee, portions of the City of San Diego, and most of rural eastern and northern San Diego County.

I’ve officially begun my second term on the County Board of Supervisors. While we’ve accomplished a lot in the past four years, we know there is more work to be done. Here are some of my top priorities that I will be focused on for my second term in office.
1. Safety: I will do everything I can to protect North County. We are going to make sure our law enforcement officials are funded and have the resources and tools they need. My office will continue to work to stop the placement of Sexually Violent Predators in our region.
2. Homelessness/Mental Health: It’s simply inhumane to allow people to live on the street. As a society – we can do better. We need to be able to help those people who can’t help themselves. I’m going to do everything I can to find solutions for homelessness so that we get people into treatment and make our streets safe and clean.
3. Roads/Freeways/Infrastructure: It is time for SANDAG to come

back to the table with a regional transportation plan that is beneficial for everyone in San Diego County. Their top priority must be the SR-78 HOV lanes and an interchange at the I-5. And, they should not tax people out of their vehicles by charging them for every mile they drive.
4. Housing: We need to make housing more affordable, especially for our young families. It’s nearly impossible for people to afford to live in San Diego and that is unacceptable. I would like to see the Board of Supervisors take a stand of not adding any more fees for new housing.
There are many more issues that need to be addressed, but these are just a few of the ones I’m focused on to start the year. It is an absolute honor to be on the County Board of Supervisors.
This is not a job I take for granted and I will do everything I can to make San Diego County an even better place to live, work and play.

Sheri Lau’s Samsung washer doesn’t work, despite many repairs. Now the manufacturer claims it sold her the appliance “as is” and won’t help her fix it. Is she out of luck?
Q: I bought a Samsung washer from Best Buy in 2019. It was a total lemon! They replaced it in August 2020. But the second washer failed in June 2022.
I called Samsung, and a representative told me the washer was out of warranty and I would have to pay for repairs. Samsung set up an appointment with one of their repair services. They quoted me $90 for the service call.
A technician said my washer needed a drain pump. He ordered one and charged me $120. He called me later and said the part was unavailable, but I could order one online, and they would come back to install it.
I asked him why he couldn’t order
it, and he said Samsung only allowed them to buy their parts from them. Just wanting my washer fixed, I ordered the part. When it came in, the technician came back and installed it. He charged me another $120 for the service call.
The washer didn’t work. When I tried to do my first load of laundry, water gushed out of the bottom. I called the repair center repeatedly and left messages for three days, and no response. Initially, Samsung agreed to repair the machine. But then it said it could not find the right parts and canceled, claiming it had sold me the washer “as is.” I just want a working washer. Can you help me? -- Sheri Lau, Dexter, Mich.
A: Samsung should have fixed your washer as promised. You can’t just say you’ll help a customer and then refuse, claiming there’s no warran-

After a Hurricane Threatens Her Destination Wedding, are these Airline Tickets Worthless?
Char Collins has to cancel her flights from Minneapolis to Santo Domingo after a hurricane threatens her destination wedding. Will she have to throw away her airline tickets, or can she reuse them?
Q: I used my US Bank Visa card points to buy three economy tickets on American Airlines to attend a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic. The wedding was rescheduled to Mexico because of a hurricane.
I’ve communicated with American Airlines, but it is unwilling to reschedule us since our departure date does not fall within their travel alert. We have “basic” economy class tickets, which can’t be changed. We now need to pay for three more tickets to attend the wedding in Mexico.
I have asked the US Bank Rewards Center what they can do for me about this situation, and they said their only option is to contact American Airlines to see if they would consider other options. And when I ask American Airlines, the response is the same -- they refer me to US Bank Visa. Can you help?
-- Char Collins, Minneapolis
A: It looks like you’re stuck between your bank, your airline, and a hurricane. Not a good place to be!
Your destination wedding was moved from the Dominican Republic to Cancun, Mexico, after a hurricane took aim at the island. That’s one of the risks of traveling to the Caribbean during hurricane season. It looks like you had travel insurance -- good call -- but it wouldn’t cover you because the storm wasn’t imminent.
You already paid for your three tickets using your points via US Bank Visa. Typically, that’s a oneway transaction -- you can’t get the points refunded to your account. It looks like American Airlines had
authorized flight ticket changes between September 17 and September 25, but your wedding was happening later that month.
American Airlines should have seen the problem and made an exception to its refund rules. And I think it would have if you had complained to the right person. Unfortunately, the folks in American’s customer service department could only repeat their policy, which is what they’re trained to do. Escalating this to a higher level with one of the American Airlines executive contacts I publish on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org, might have helped. A brief, polite email might have allowed you to use your flight credit for the rescheduled wedding in Mexico.
Your case highlights the risks of using credit card miles to book a flight. When you have another party involved -- your bank or credit card company -- you are often at the mercy of its policies in addition to the airline rules. And you may also find that your ticket comes with extra restrictions that could render it useless if you need to make a change.
Travel insurance should have helped you, but it wasn’t the only way to avoid this mess. Buying a more expensive economy-class ticket that allows changes might have kept you from having a worthless ticket.
I contacted American Airlines on your behalf. A manager reviewed your problem and agreed to refund $582 as trip credit, which you can use to pay for flights to the new wedding location in Mexico.

Our Historic Palomar Mountain Observatory
There’s little doubt that among our younger generations are a great many unaware the one-time world’s largest astronomical telescope is located on nearby Palomar Mountain, which is less than an hour’s drive from the North San Diego County communities of Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, or Escondido.
With a $6 million grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, Astronomer George Ellery Hale orchestrated the planning, design, and construction of the Observatory. But it took 20 years for the project to be completed and Hale did not live to see its commissioning.
The Hale telescope was groundbreaking for its time, with double the diameter of the second-largest telescope … the Mt. Wilson Observatory north of Los Angeles had a 100-inch reflecting telescope. Palomar has pioneered many new technologies in telescope-mount design and in the fabrication of its large 200-inch aluminum coated “honeycomb” Pyrex mirror. The project was completed in 1949 and today continues in active use as one of the world’s largest and most-sophisticated land-mounted telescopes.
one in 1976. Edwin Powell Hubble was the first astronomer to use the telescope. Palomar remained the world’s second largest until 1993 with the construction of the 300plus inch Keck Observatory on Maui in Hawaii.
Palomar was built and is operated by the California Institute of Technology. The 200-inch giant continues to be engaged in research programs that cover the vast range of our observable universe, including studies of near-Earth asteroids, outer Solar System planets, Kuiper Belt objects, a variety of star formations, and black holes.
Palomar Mountain’s northeast (desert) side location was selected because of its remote location away from the city lights of Los Angeles and San Diego. Palomar Mountain actually is a 15-mile-long, 4,000to 6,000 foot elevation mountain range. In the 1920s when Hale first conceived of the San Diego County Observatory, Escondido and Oceanside were small communities. Portions of nearby Riverside County desert didn’t have electricity, and Temecula wasn’t even a wide spot in the road along U.S. 395 (I-15).
Today, Palomar Observatory continues as one of the world’s most sophisticated astronomical research complex with multiple telescopes. Research time is granted by Caltech and its research partners, which include the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Yale University, and the National Optical Observatories of China.

Bastards!
In 1928, Hale published an article in Sky Magazine proposing what was to become the 200-inch Palomar reflector; it was an invitation to the American public to learn about how large telescopes could help answer questions relating to the fundamental nature of the universe. Over the years Hale’s telescope has uncovered millions of celestial objects in the far reaches of the universe that before were virtually unknown.
For more than 30 years the Hale Telescope represented the technological limit in building large optical telescopes. It was the largest telescope in the world from its completion in 1949 until the Soviet Union (Russia) built a larger
The first telescope built on the Observatory complex was an 18inch Schmidt camera device put into operation in 1936. In addition to the giant 200-inch Hale Telescope, there is the 48-inch Schmidt Telescope, the Palomar 60-inch Telescope, and the 12 inch Gattini Telescope, all of which are involved in continual research. The 48-inch and 60-inch telescopes operate robotically and are active in deep-space exploration.
While Palomar Observatory is a research facility, there are selected Observatory areas open to the public during the day. Visitors can take self-guided tours of the 200-

The High Cost of Renting an Electric Vehicle
may pay significantly above what it would cost to charge up the car,” says Krulewitz.
Are there any other fees?
Charging fees are not the only “gotchas.” Renters have reported other extras, like idle fees (for overstaying your welcome at a charging station) and additional surcharges if your battery level dips below 10 percent. Also, knowing the car rental industry like I do, it’s only a matter of time before they invent another fee and quietly add it to their terms and conditions.
Can you recharge?
By Christopher Elliott
You’d think the cost of renting an electric vehicle would be falling, with Tesla slashing the price of its cars by up to 20 percent last week. Not exactly.
The EV premium is alive and well. Electric car rentals still cost roughly 20 percent more than gas-powered vehicles, according to a random sampling of prices I conducted. But there’s also a hidden cost of renting an EV that has shocked some travelers. It includes extras for charging the car or spending too much time at a charging station.
The extras add up, making an EV rental a luxury for many travelers. In fact, smart drivers are turning down the opportunity to rent an electric vehicle.
What are car rental fees for EVs?
Joshua Folb did a double-take when Budget Car Rental recently sent him its updated terms. Buried deep in the fine print was a requirement that EVs have to be returned more than 70 percent charged or face a $35 fee. If it’s less than 10 percent, it’s $70.
“I wonder what the other car rental companies are doing,” says Folb, who works for a nonprofit organization in Arlington, Va.
Well, wonder no more. Avis, which owns Budget, has an identical policy. Hertz has a complicated set of EV fees that include charging, controversial “idle” fees and the costs of any damaged charging cable. Enterprise doesn’t have any EV charging fees, and Sixt actually rewards you for recharging your car with a voucher.
“When renting an EV, renters need to be aware of any additional charging fees that may be required post-rental,” explains Erin Kemp, a consumer advocate for the car site Bumper.
Kemp has seen charging fees ranging from $15 to $50 or more, depending on the rental company and the battery. He says car rental customers should think of it as a supercharged refueling fee. Car rental companies charge about three times as much as the market rate to top off an EV with a low battery.
Charging more for an EV and adding hidden fees is a bizarre business practice, considering that car rental companies are trying to get more people to rent an EV.
Drivers are revolted by these EV fees
Callum Russell rented a Nissan Ariya on a recent visit to California. The daily rate of $50 was reasonable -- but that was before the fees.
The company added fees of $35 for EV charging and $20 for an additional driver, and a representative also told him that if he didn’t return the EV clean, he’d have to pay another fee. “The charging fee was much more than if I had used a public charging port,” says Russell, who runs a site about EV charging.
Daniel Carr had a similar experience when he priced cars for a oneweek rental.
“The car options that were electric were overpriced,” says Carr, who publishes an automotive blog. “I think they are taking advantage of
the fact that it’s a new technology, and know that if you want to pick an EV over a gas-powered car, they can take advantage of your moral preference for using an EV.”
He went with a gas-powered car.
Richard Wong, a government worker from Washington, D.C., tried to rent an EV in San Francisco during the holiday. The price tag, after all the surcharges, came to more than $100 per day. He’s outraged.
“I don’t know how they can justify the greater expense if we’re paying for the electricity and they’re probably receiving government incentives like tax breaks or outright subsidies for buying electric vehicles,” he says.
Wong also went with a conventional vehicle.
How do you avoid these high fees?
Scrap your assumptions about EVs before you rent one, say experts. You know, that they’re affordable, that there are no extra fees, and that all of the fees are clearly disclosed. The exact opposite is often true.
“Be sure to ask,” says Andrew Krulewitz, CEO of Zevvy, the electric vehicle leasing company.
What’s the charging policy?
Every rental company seems to have a different policy on charging. Some will allow you to return the vehicle without a charge and won’t make you pay extra. Others will start charging a fee if you return the car with less than 70 percent charge on the battery, and they’ll punish you with even steeper fees if you go under 10 percent. “You
The problem with a recharging fee is that it’s often impractical to top off a vehicle before returning it, according to Phil Partridge, marketing manager for Rhino Car. “With a regular car, customers can pop into the nearest fuel station to the airport to top up at the expense of 5 to 10 minutes,” he says. “But the forward planning required to leave enough time to recharge the rental car -- up to an hour or more! -- could add unwanted time and stress to the rental return, which is already a rather nervy affair to many.” How true. And in some locations, a charging station may be limited. That’s something to think about before you rent an EV.
These fees are ridiculous
If the idea behind adding EVs is to save the environment, then most car rental companies are going about it the wrong way.
They’re charging an EV premium -- they should be offering a discount.
They’re adding fees for charging the battery -- they should be offering vouchers for returning the vehicle with a full charge (like Sixt). They’re adding hidden fees and extra expenses -- they should be removing them.
So when I see reports of hundreds of Teslas sitting idle in Hertz parking lot, I’m not surprised. Some car rental companies see EVs as a profit opportunity, and they are hoping our conscience will push us to pay more and tolerate these junk fees so we can save the environment.
We may be worried about climate change, but we’re not that stupid.

Avoid Scams on Facebook Marketplace
Next time you browse Facebook Marketplace for something to buy or sell, make sure you don’t get scammed out of your hard-earned money
Facebook is a platform where you can seemingly get it all: updates about your friends, cute baby pics, news stories or romantic dates. But its marketplace, where people go to quickly buy and sell merchandise, is also a place fraught with scams. One billion users buy and sell goods on Facebook Marketplace each month. Unfortunately, like with most things in life, there are bad actors ready to take advantage of a technology for their own financial gain. Scams are an unfortunate reality on any selling platform. Oftentimes the scam is one we’ve seen before but made new using this new service.
Here are Facebook Marketplace scams to be aware of:
Fake home and apartment listings
Scammers pose as property agents, owners or landlords to post properties they have no right to sell or rent. They then use high pressure tactics to get the victim to send money, such as “this is a hot market,” “I have tons of bidders,” “If you send the deposit or down payment now, I can reserve you the apartment.”
Sometimes they use properties they know are unoccupied and invite the buyer to view the property without them. Use caution if you cannot get into a property. To protect yourself, use verified real estate services. Or use Google reverse image search to see if the property is posted elsewhere. Do not pay without signing paperwork.
Fake vehicle listings
This is the same type of scam as phone apartment listings in which the bad actor asks for a deposit or payment up front. In this scam the scammer does not own the car and does not intend to provide it. They may claim the vehicle has eBay purchase protection, but this only applies to vehicles bought on eBay.
Shipping insurance scam
This scam occurs where the buyer agrees to buy an item and pay for the shipping if seller pays for the insurance. The phony buyer then generates a fake shipping invoice from UPS/USPS/FedEx and often quotes $50-100 shipping insurance. Once the seller pays the buyer the insurance, they never hear from the buyer again.

Elvis from page 5
to be forthright. In later years the question persisted, and Robert Goulet tried to downplay any such bad blood between himself and the Memphis singing sensation. In an interview with brilliant writer, Christopher Blank, on 14 August 2004, Goulet tried to set the record straight but, as always, he omitted the sordid details of his reprehensible postscript that taunted Presley about his girlfriend. Instead, Goulet lamented that the media always zeroed-in on him, stating in his defence: “He shot out Mel Torme. He shot out Frank (Sinatra). But I get all the bad credit.” Goulet then added another smokescreen to cover his tracks: “He also shot 50 other people on the TV screen. He was on drugs and emotionally unstable,” he would say in another interview.
Goulet never told the complete truth.
Later, Presley had no qualms over appearing in public photos with Robert Goulet, once the King was securely reestablished. Reclaiming his throne, he could now be charitable.
While it is true that Elvis Presley was often under various drugs and did, in fact, seem to shoot indiscriminately at objects, including chandeliers, light switches, and small appliances – amidst this smokescreen of generality – he did, nevertheless, have focused reasons on why he shot at specific people on television, including Frank Sinatra.
Sinatra went so far as to testify
before a 1958 Congressional hearing, condemning Elvis and the wake of rock ‘n’ roll popularity that followed him: “Rock and roll is the most brutal, ugly, desperate vicious form of expression it has been my misfortune to hear. It is sung, played and written for the most part by cretinous (sic) goons, and by means of its almost imbecilic reiteration, and sly, lewd – in plain fact, dirty – lyrics . . . it manages to be the martial music of every side-burned delinquent on the face of the earth.”
With Sinatra’s alleged underworld connections and other shady dealings, such pronouncements by Sinatra seemed highly hypocritical. Sinatra had his own house-cleaning to do.
Elvis and Sinatra later would sing together, such as on the television Special, “Welcome Back Elvis,” on 12 May 1960.
That Elvis was trigger happy was a ‘given’ among those who formed his coterie of friends as well as members of his Memphis Mafia.
On one occasion, Elvis Presley had purchased a beautiful, bright yellow De Tomasco Pantera for his girlfriend at the time, Linda Thompson. After a verbal fight with Thompson, Elvis angrily jumped into her Pantera in hopes of making a dramatic exit in trying to light-up the tires in a screeching ‘burnout.’ Unfortunately, the 1974 Pantera refused to cooperate by not starting.
For Elvis, there was only one logical thing left to do. Elvis pulled out his revolver and shot the car. Several times.

The exotic mid-engine Pantera sustained multiple bullet holes: one in the tire, one in the driver’s door frame, one through the floor pan, and one went totally through the steering wheel.
There is no defence that Elvis had a stockpile of weapons and loved to shoot things, often out of annoyance, or simply for leisurely fun, such as at poolside shooting-out floating light bulbs.
Ginger Alden, who was Presley’s final girlfriend during the final months of his life, reflected on one particular Elvis memory that she will never forget: “We were reading together and the toilet was making a noise,” Alden remembers. “Elvis got up, left the room, came back with a machine gun and proceeded to shoot the toilet.”
Everything Elvis did, he made a splash in the news. He would often sign autographs on the naked breasts of his female fans. “Elvis” on the left breast, and “Presley” on the right one. On such occasions, he would often stand back to admire his handwriting.
His unusual life and eccentricities began early on. When he was only two years old, he once wiggled out of his mother’s lap so that he could walk over and join the choir singing during services at the Assembly of God Church.
Elvis had many deeply-scarred wounds, springing from a painful past. He was born into poverty, a shame which was later rebuked by him in the form of freely giving away expensive cars, often to strangers.
He was born blond in hair colour which he carefully darkened in his later years, using Miss Clairol 51D, called “Black Velvet.” He wished his hair to be jet black, as he saw in his favourite movie star, Tony Curtis, whom he greatly admired and emulated. He even dyed his eyelashes, which in time begat health complications in later years. And to keep his lips soft and velvety for kissing, he often used A&D ointment.
Deep down there remained a religious streak, which never totally departed him. For all his rabblerousing ways, drug addictions, sexual escapades, and other transgressions, he still held-out hopes of redemption and standing in front of the pearly gates. He believed that, somehow, the Almighty would understand his crooked life, and the road he had walked.
Unknown to most, in 1965 he spoke about entering a monastery. His close emotional connection to his mother was, at times, uncanny. There seemed to be an almost spiritual bond between them. Once, while touring, Elvis and his band members were en route to another town when their car, unexpectedly, caught fire. When Elvis phoned his mother later that same night, she immediately asked, “What happened?!” When a stunned Elvis asked, “What do you mean?” she proceeded to hysterically tell him, “I had a dream and I saw fire, a big fire all around you!!”

“The times they are a-changin.” Part 2 of ?
Bob Dylan iconic song written in 1964 continues the theme for, this, the second column in this series heralding the end of “THE PCAGE” and the beginning of “THE INTERNET AGE”
The printing press, electricity, internal combustion engine, computers, telephone, radio, television, flight are among technologiesthat led to dramatic changes in the way we live in and view our World, but no technology approaches the rapid and profound effectthat broadband Internet continues to have on American culture.
IBM’s release of the PC in August of 1981 marked the beginning of the “PC Age.” By 2000, 50% of homes
owned a PC; by 2011 the number was 77%. Today nearly 95% of homes have at least one PC. In the early years PCs were seen as standalone systems used to automate normal home and business tasks. Home PCs were also central to learning and entertainment. After Y2K (2000), high speed Internet (broadband) began to replace “dial-up” Internet access (phone line). The availability of broadband Internet began the process of evolution from standalone workstations to Internet terminals among small business and home users. By 2010 “Dial- up” was history and “broadband” Internet access was the standard. Today 95% of Americans have high speed access to the Internet.
As (broadband) became the standard Internet access mode, content creators rushed to make their products available to run on the Internet. Applications that were popular as stand-alone applications like tax preparation, genealogy, spread sheets, word processing, gaming, video/audio editing etc, were joined by a myriad of applications like banking, shopping, email etc. PCs were no longer stand-alone workstations. They were becoming I/O (input /output) Internet terminals. They used the high powered Internet servers to crunch their numbers and store their files in the “cloud.”
Any PCs with 4-8GB of RAM, a small storage drive for the operating system and the Intel or AMD multicore CPUs available in 2010 can run Internet applications at maximum Internet speed. Home and small business PC users began to realize that faster CPUs, bigger hard drives
and more RAM couldn’t improve the speed or performance of Internet based applications. As a result many users hung on to their existing PCs instead of replacing them. Between 2011 and 2019 PCs Worldwide PC sales declined from 324 Million units to 261 million, a 19% drop. Sales rebounded in 2020 and 2021 as work and school from home played out, but the sales decline resumed and accelerated in 2022 as PC sales fell 16% from 2021’s numbers.
Sometime between Y2K and 2010 we crossed over from “THE PC AGE” to “THE INTERNET AGE”. Personal Computers lost the “TECHNOLOGY SUPERSTAR” status they held in the 1980’s and 90’s and The Internet has assumed that mantle. Today PCs are only one of several devices we use to access the new “TECHNOLOGY SUPERSTAR”, the Internet.
For the very first time in human his-
tory, beginning with introduction of “broadband Internet” over the past two decades, virtually all of human activity has become accessible to nearly everyone on the planet. All facts and fiction, every thought or feeling, all information and misinformation, every subject of love or hate. There is nothing human that is not expressed on the Internet and shot round the planet at the speed of light for anyone to see and ponder. There is no supreme editor to affix a true or false label to Internet content. We’re on our own to figure it out. In many respects the Internet has made life safer and more efficient. It could make us more understanding and tolerant of one another. The Internet has the potential to improve our lives in many ways, but will it? Is there a dark side lurking in this incredible new tool of communication? We’ll continue this conversation next week

A victim of domestic violence knew that, if she and her kids escaped, her abuser would kill their kittens. When she got a chance to run, she took the kittens and dropped them outside a shelter. It saved their lives…and hers.
Several years ago, I reported about a litter of puppies found in a box, beside a freeway. One guy demanded, “Give me five minutes alone in a room with the guy who abandoned those puppies.”
Talk is cheap. If I could have arranged a meeting, he would have been afraid to go.
So, who abandons puppies or kittens? An animal abuser prob-
A family working-poor found themselves with yet another litter of puppies. They placed as many as they could with family and friends. The rest were left at a shelter. They didn’t want them to die, but they couldn’t keep them.
A backyard breeder advertised purebred puppies. When the neighbor’s dog jumped the fence, he didn’t want to admit that the blood line had been compromised. He left them in a shelter parking lot where they couldn’t be traced
back to him. Not the best place. But also, not beside a freeway.
A guy told his wife that he had their puppy neutered. But he thought it was a reflection of his own manhood, so he didn’t. Later their female dog got pregnant. “What am I going to do?” I told him to man-up, surrender the puppies to a shelter, have his male dog neutered and the female spayed, and admit to his wife that he had been an idiot. He told her. She forgave him. But she still brings up, “Did I tell you what my idiot husband did?”
Back to the loudmouth at the beginning of this article. If you get five minutes alone with someone who is about to abandon kittens or puppies, ask how you can help them.
Be humane, first.

Elvis from page 10
The conversation left Elvis thunderstruck.
As world-famous as he became, he still remained sensitive to criticism, and forever nurtured a thin skin. For example, he greatly loved watching “The Tonight Show” on television. Until one evening when he heard Johnny Carson joke about him being, “Fat and 40.”
Some things in his widely-varied life still haunted him, day in and day out. Because some things he chose to never forget. In all his 42 years on Earth, he never forgot his twin brother who died at birth, thirty-five minutes before Elvis entered the world. His mother was poor and gave birth at home, on the morning of 8 January 1935. The stillborn twin was given a name: Jessie Garon Presley. His parents decided to add his stillborn twin’s middle name (without the ‘G’) to Elvis’ as a way for Elvis to always remember his twin brother . . . who never made it. So “Garon” became “Aron,” then finalised as “Aaron” so that Elvis Aaron Presley was
forever melded to his precious sibling, who was buried poorly by an impoverished family, in an unmarked grave in nearby Priceville Cemetery, in East Tupelo, Mississippi.
Unknown to the world at large, Elvis remained tormented by a great sense of loss and grief – and unfounded guilt – for his lost twin brother, whom he never got the chance to know. Elvis’ own mother, Gladys, stated in interviews that her son Elvis achieved great things because he “possessed the power of two people, and was living for two souls.”
Psychiatrists who have found Elvis an interesting study, agree with his mother, Gladys. His great agony and yearning for contact with his forever-lost twin brother, and the painful feelings of guilt brought on with Elvis’ global fame, made it difficult on some levels for Presley to completely enjoy his success –knowing full-well that his brother was left without.
Later in his life, Elvis made clear that he was never at rest, emotionally. He even went so far as to refer to his dead twin as his “original
Stop SANDAG’s Plan to Imposing a New Mileage Tax
By Jim Desmond
San Diego County’s Regional Transportation agency’s (SANDAG) latest transportation plan is designed to make driving so expensive that you succumb to public transportation. In addition to the current gas tax and registration fees, SANDAG’s plan adds three new half-cent sales tax increases, over 800 miles of San Diego County freeway lanes converted to toll lanes, and a mileage tax for every mile driven to pay for their $165 billion public mass transit plan.
SANDAG’s new plan refuses to build the road improvements promised in their last plan but will continue to tax us until 2048 to pay for them.
SANDAG’s finance plan states, “Charging fees for the transportation infrastructure that people use—for example, charging users for each mile they drive on the highway—can change travel behavior.”
It may make sense to charge to drive on roads and freeways if the fees collected go back into roads and freeways, but that is not the case with SANDAG. It’s a bait and switch - freeway dollars, gas tax dollars, and registration fees
promised for road improvements instead pay for costly public mass transit projects that less than 3% of the public uses.
Who will this affect the most? The lowest income earners. The math is simple, those that earn less will pay a disproportionately higher percentage of their income to get to where they need to go. SANDAG, the self-proclaimed leader and champion of social equity is punishing those in the lower income brackets first – and will hurt them the most.
While San Diego County is nowhere near as densely populated as Manhattan, Tokyo, or Paris, we do need a balanced transportation system with both public transportation and freeways. Public transportation should be focused within the more densely populated communities and freeways and road improvements for the surrounding areas.
Government agendas should not be used to change behavior by taxing us into fixed-rail trains and buses. Instead of changing behavior, government entities should incentivize technology and innovation. Government should embrace what most people are already choosing, and make it cleaner, safer, and more efficient.
bodyguard.” A bodyguard of sorts who made Elvis try harder, insulating Elvis from failure, protecting and galvanising him with the knowledge that Elvis Presley was living for two souls.
For his brother’s sake, Elvis had to succeed.
In his twilight years, this small boy from Mississippi was, ultimately, left with only a poverty portion of hope -- his most cherished hope -that he would, someday, somehow, find a way to breach the vault of heaven, and navigate his soul, with divine guidance, to a final re-union with his twin brother.
Forty-six years after his death, Elvis Presley remains the most famous, the most celebrated, and the most imitated figure in all entertainment, from the four corners of the world.
This year, in 2023, the number of Elvis Presley impersonators is projected to reach a historic recordhigh number of well over 100,000. These Elvis Presley imitators saturate the world, in most every civilised culture, as no other American figure, before or since.
The people have spoken, they choose freedom of movement and not broken promises or additional taxes.

ty on the washer.
If you buy something “as is,” it means it’s not covered by any warranty. You’ll find “as is” most frequently used for used cars and appliances. But it’s highly unusual for a manufacturer to sell a new appliance “as is.” Some states prohibit retailers from selling appliances “as is,” but unfortunately, Michigan isn’t one of them.
I would have argued that even though your written warranty (also called an express warranty) no longer covered your washer, an implied warranty did. I have more about implied warranties in my ultimate guide to fixing your appliance on Elliott.org, my consumer advocacy site. Basically, a washing machine should last 13 years, and the manufacturer implies that
People of all ages, genders, and ethnicities know who Elvis is, which is well beyond any other entertainment figure in world history.
Unknown to most of the world, Elvis Presley started to wear a Jewish Chai necklace around his neck because he had learned that his mother Gladys’ maternal grandmother was of the Jewish faith. So Presley later added a Jewish Star of David on his mother’s gravestone in the mid-1960s.
As previously cited, Presley was extremely close to his mother his entire life. When his mother entered Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee and died of a heart attack a few days after, Elvis was hysterical. A 3:00 a.m. call from the hospital notified him of his mother’s passing.
Elvis entered his mother’s hospital room and the door shut behind him. Witnesses outside the room could hear the loud piercing cries of anguish and weeping and long, loud prayers. The screams of torment and separation engulfed him

it will last about that long. Two years is far too short a lifespan. But here’s what made me take your case: Samsung told you that it would fix your ailing washer and then changed its mind because it couldn’t find the right parts. Excuse me? The manufacturer can’t find its own parts? Perhaps it should look inward for the solution.
I see companies doing this all the time -- they blame another department, or company policy, for not being able to help a customer. But they ignore the fact that they are in control of the other department, and they set company policy. So, from the perspective of a consumer, those excuses are inexcusable..
You could have reached out to one of the executive contacts for Samsung I publish on my consumer advocacy website. A brief but firm email detailing your troubles might have fixed this appliance problem.
I contacted Samsung on your behalf. If offered you a $563 refund, which represents the depreciated value of your Samsung washer. Maybe your next washer shouldn’t be a Samsung.

Guided tours of the 200-inch telescope dome and observing area are available Saturdays and Sundays during the months of April through October. Behind-the-scenes tours for the public are offered through a community support group, “Palomar Observatory Docents.”
Palomar Observatory also has an on-site museum: The Greenway Visitor Center containing observatory and astronomy-relevant exhibits, a gift shop, and is a hosting site for periodic public events.
The Observatory’s County road 56 leads up the mountain to the complex from Stat Route 76, (east of Interstate 15. It’s about a onehour drive from Escondido or Oceanside. For RV and camping enthusiasts, the nearby Palomar Campground has an easy two-mile walking path to the Observatory. The Observatory grounds are a favorite area for amateur astronomers using their personal telescopes, but dress warm because even during the summer months, the Observatory’s 6,142 foot elevation can get a bit chilly.
For those unable to travel to the Observatory, Palomar provides an extensive Internet tour that provides virtual access to all the major onsite research telescopes. The Greenway Center has extensive embedded multimedia to provide additional context. Similarly, the Observatory actively maintains an extensive website and YouTube channel for more detailed information.

as he hugged the lifeless body of his mother one last time.
At the funeral, when the casket of Gladys Love Presley (1912 –1958) was about to be lowered into the ground, Elvis panicked at the sight of it.
For many, the emotional image of Elvis was too much for those in attendance to experience. Many turned their heads and wept openly and loudly as a forlorn Elvis Presley jumped up and wrapped his arms around the coffin refusing to let his mother leave him.
Holding the casket tightly, he finally screamed loudly: “Everything I have is gone!”
Elvis Presley was suddenly reduced to a child again, and there was no shame in it.
It took several men, including members of the Memphis Mafia, his cousin Billy Smith, his father Vernon, and still others to muster the combined strength in pulling Elvis away from his mother’s coffin, upon which his arms remained fastened like bands of steel.
Finally, as the casket lowered into the ground, a physically restrained Presley screamed and pleaded loudly, one last time: “Please don’t take my Mama away!! She’s not dead!! She’s just sleeping!!”
In retrospect, often those who critique Elvis Presley in negative terms, fail to place themselves into
his shoes, to walk the long unforgiving road as he did. Nor do they pay honour to the Biblical Scripture which warns: “Judge not, lest you be judged.”
Upon his mother’s gravestone, to the left, Elvis added the Jewish symbol that is the Star of David. To the far right side is the Christian Cross. Between these two diverse religious symbols are etched these words from Elvis: “Gladys Loves Presley. Sunshine of our house.” And just below these words are added a phrase from Biblical Scripture: “Not mine, But thy will be done.”
Why both the Jewish and Christian symbols on his mother’s gravesite?
Elvis always wanted to take care of her, even in the afterlife. As best he could, he wished to provide safe passage for her – to Heaven, where he hoped to see her again. He wished to take no unnecessary chances.
Once, when a reporter who knew Elvis to be of Christian background, asked why he wore the Jewish Chai necklace. He answered: “I don’t want to miss out on going to heaven on a technicality.”
Elvis was serious. He wished to make no errors which might prevent his reunion with his mama who bore him, and his lifeless twin brother – whom he never knew, but, he planned to embrace and never again become separated.

Stealing your information scam
Once a seller or buyer agrees on a purchase, the other party claims they want to verify your ID to protect themselves. They will ask for your personal identifying information, which can be used to create fake accounts, to obtain credit in your name or to answer questions if they try to hack into your online accounts. The fraudster may tell you that you’ll receive a text code to your phone number and ask for the code to verify who you are. The scammer then uses your number as verification or set up a Google Voice number connected to your phone number.
It may be a scam if:
• If you are asked to switch to a different platform, such as text or WhatsApp, it may be a scam.
• If the deal is too good to be true, the goods may very well be fake, broken, stolen or non-existent.
• Being asked to pay via gift card or cryptocurrency is a red flag.
Facebook Marketplace is convenient and useful platform, but make sure you are aware of common scams, so you don’t get defrauded.
Remember, when meeting in person to exchange goods and payment, be sure it is in a lighted, public and safe space.
You might also, consider using Facebook Messenger’s “checkout” feature, which keeps a record of all transactions.
