What follows are various examples of how women of genius spearheaded many towering achievements in American history and, yet, these women are largely and tragically missing from our mainstream history school books to even our higher seats of learning, i.e. our colleges and universities.

THE BIG BREAKTHROUGH AT LAST! Declassified files reveal that both Lise Meitner and Otto Hahn worked on America’s Manhattan Project.

Otto Hahn worked on a theoretical model of nuclear fission.

At first, Hahn was unable to even fully understand, let alone solve, a neutron-bombardment experiment, so he frantically scribbled a work memo to his brilliant female colleague, Lise Meitner.

In Hahn’s urgent memo to Lise Meitner, he is shown frantically asking her for urgent help in his department and entire working staff – all of whom remained baffled.

To directly quote from Otto Hahn’s own handwritten words to fellow physicist, Lise Meitner, he wrote:

In a few days of collaboration, Lise Meitner did what fellow physicist, Otto Hahn called the “impossible” and she, indeed, came up with that “fantastic explanation” and helped to create a theoretical model of nuclear fission which led the way to the making of America’s first atomic bomb – which would bring an abrupt end to the Second World War and, thus, save countless millions of human lives – on all sides.

Multitude of sources began to corroborated an ugly truth that women in the Manhattan Project were not only unacknowledged for their true contributions in the making of the first atomic bombs, but, they were not even allowed to rise to highlevel positions due to gender bias and professional jealousies, at the time.

HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS WERE ERASED & IGNORED FOR POSTERITY. Here comes the real shocker.

On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can’t explain his behavior. I don’t know why he didn’t say, ‘I love you, too.’

When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent.

Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. We had sex, he fell asleep; I cried. I don’t know what to do.

I’m almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.

Conversation wasn’t flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn’t say much.

It is beyond shameful that these fiercely patriotic women of genius had to endure gender prejudice and jealousy on a most vicious level, as one headline story broke the travesty: “Prevailing societal attitudes toward women assured that no women rose to high-level positions with the Manhattan Project.” (Ibid, 1996.)

Lise Meitner, one of eight Jewish children; a woman so intellectually superior that it moved Albert Einstein to refer to her as “Our Marie Curie.”

(Note: Marie Curie (1867-1934) was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in1903 and also the first person to receive it twice in chemistry and physics).

BRILLIANT WOMEN PHYSICISTS WORKED ON ALL ASPECTS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WORLD’S FIRST ATOMIC BOMB. As the Washington Post pointed out, and as other male scientists broke their silence, a horrific and shameful truth slowly emerged in world newspapers at how male jealousy kept brilliant women scientists “out of the scientific limelight” and how “their achievements were often stolen under false male pretenses.”

Soon, the world at large would learn of an ugly truth and one of the most shameful cover-ups in human history.

“Because of the prevailing attitudes toward women, very little information about these women’s contributions was released during and even after World War II. Women worked on essentially all aspects of the Manhattan Project before the first bombs went overseas.”

I mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a cold beer.

A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, “It might be nice to have another child.”

The day was really quite beautiful, and the drink facilitated some deep thinking.

On the other hand, you never hear a guy say, “You know, I think I would like another kick in the groin.”

My wife walked by and asked me what I was doing and I said ‘nothing’.

At that point I would have to explain that men are deep thinkers about various topics which would lead to other questions.

Finally I thought about an age old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the groin?

Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the groin.

Well, after another beer, and some heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with the answer to that question.

Getting kicked in the groin is more painful than having a baby; and here is the reason for my conclusion.

Wu helped create the first reactor that was used for the first atomic detonation in New Mexico on 16 July 1945, less than one month before Little Boy and Fat Man (code names of our country’s first atomic bombs) were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, thus, essentially ending World War II. Many years later, Maria Goeppert Mayer’s genius finally became evident when she totally dismantled all of the world’s greatest male competitors in winning the 1963 Nobel Prize in physics for her past work in developing the theory of nuclear shell structure, decades after the fact.

Today, most students of World War II are familiar with the Manhattan Project and such luminaries as Enrico Fermi, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Niels Bohr, Edward Teller, et al, who helped create the first nuclear reactor and subsequent atomic bombs. But, less known were the brilliant women physicists that the U.S. Government brought into the Top Secret Project. The very women that solved several key scientific problems (multiple times over) which their male counterparts were unable to solve.

The Dog I Wish Was Mine . . .

Man About Town Most folks who know me are aware that I’m a soft touch when it comes to dogs and pretty girls of about 1011 years old (which happens to be the age of my only granddaughter, Alex, who has grandpa completely wrapped around her little finger).

Recently,I visited the Escondido Campus of the San Diego Humane Society and visited with all the dogs kenneled there. I talked to each of them, some of them even talked back. (Dogs talk with their eyes and facial expression.)

I was saddened to see about 8-9 of the animals had been surrendered in December . . . several on December 23rd ... two days before Christmas Day. One dog in particular, Spencer, caught my eye.

A beautiful, white/tan, male Siberian-Husky mix, Spencer was

brought to San Diego Humane Society by his previous owner on 12/2/23 when they were moving abroad and unable to keep him.

This sweet two-year-old dog has lived with other dogs and cats and has done well with all pets he’s met! He also loves every human he’s met and lived with kids in his previous home. Spencer is the perfect mix of energetic and gentle — he loves to get outdoors to sunbathe, play and go on walks! He is an incredibly intelligent pup and always aims to please his people.

He can benefit from continued training to make him feel confident and comfortable in his new home.

If you’re looking for an adventurous affectionate companion, look no further than Spencer!

Spencer has been vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. He is now ready for his new home! He is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus.

Why Spencer cannot be my dog: I remember seeing him in the kennel. A beautiful dog. But with a hurt, confused look about him. He seemed to be saying, “why did my

owner surrender me to the Humane Society? Did I do something wrong? Are they coming back for me? I miss them so much!”

I wanted to wrap my arms around Spencer ... love him, talk to him, take him home. But I can’t. I have a wife who has dementia for whom I am her primary caregiver for the past 10 years . . . and we don’t have that large of a home or even a very large lot; I don’t have the time or facilities to properly care for a dog.

Spencer would need room to run, to play, to enjoy life. I can’t offer him that.

And why isn’t she recognised today?

known for sure, as time – and poor record-keeping, as well as male plagiarism – has muddled details of original ownership, etc., down through the years.

It is a most sad saga for women of brilliant minds whose astounding ideas were stolen, borrowed, or perverted, with absolutely no mention of these women at all.

For example, every school child is taught the wonders of Eli Whitney and his cotton gin invention which revolutionised the cotton industry in the United States. Whitney’s cotton gin invention was so gargantuan during its time that historians refer to its economic impact as nothing less than: “Influencing the history of the United States. By the mid-nineteenth century, America was supplying three-quarters of the world’s cotton.”

Contemporary historians have uncovered a shocking, and disturbing, counter-story that has been buried in history.

Although Eli Whitney received his patent for a cotton gin invention in 1794, a woman has now been revealed to have presented the original (working) idea and also the resolution of problems in his prototype cotton gin design.

According to many scholars, her name was Catherine Littlefield Greene (1755-1814), and she possessed a most extraordinary mind; an inquisitive intellectual mind begat from an upper-level education – a most rare opportunity for women of that suppressed era.

History seems to be uncovering elements of truth that Eli Whitney’s first cotton gin model did not work well.

It was first fitted with wooden teeth and Whitney, it has been well-documented, became frustrated and was about to throw his invention away!

Mrs. Greene is said to have proposed the substitution of wire, instead of wood, to better catch the cotton seeds. Her proposals of other problem-solving concepts are said to have allowed Whitney to eventually carry through ‘his’ ideas.

And claim the full workable idea and patent for the cotton gin, in his name.

According to The National Archives, Catherine Littlefield Greene’s intellectual advice on Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, as well as: “both morale and financial support were critical to Whitney’s efforts (to accomplish his idea as a viable (workable) invention.”

such as Dr. Fred Amram, Holocaust-survivor, inventor, and retired professor from the University of Minnesota, have stated that Eli Whitney faced challenges in his prototype cotton gin machine that Catherine Greene was only able to resolve.

Otherwise the idea would not, in reality, reach fruition.

According to Professor Amram, documentation clearly shows that in 1792, Catherine Greene: “Hired Eli Whitney (a Yale university graduate student) as a tutor for her (five) children (and to help oversee the family plantation).”

It was there that Eli Whitney recognised Catherine Greene’s enormous insight in problem-solving.

Greene’s unique thinking is documented by respected author, Sarah Amandolare, as such: “Catherine Littlefield Greene stood out among her Revolutionary Warera counterparts, engaging in political discourse, maintaining friendships with men and generally (thinking outside the box).”

Regarding Whitney’s frustration with his early cotton gin device, “She (Catherine Greene) outlined to him the basic problem of separating seeds from cotton fiber. She

then gave him information on all the earlier attempts to make the process more efficient, and encouraged him to design something new in his prototype device.” (Ibid, Amandolare) Eli Whitney applied for his cotton gin patent on 28 October 1793; the patent was granted on 14 March 1794, but was not validated until 1807.

BEGINNING OF THE CONSPIRACY: WOMEN WERE NOT ALLOWED TO OWN A U. S. PATENT. The whole ‘conspiracy’ against women of genius, and inventors in particular, began long ago in America, in 1776, when the Founding Fathers considered all intellectual property to be solely the domain of men.

Under U.S. law, women were not allowed to own a patent for any kind of invention. This law was slightly amended in 1790 with the following guidelines: women could hold patents if they were single (which was rare), or widowed.

Once a couple was married, they legally became ‘one person.’ In essence, a married woman became a ‘non-person,’ whose existence was nil. Married women were not allowed to hold patents (or even own custody of their own children).

Preparing For Wildfires

I recently joined several legislators to tour the site of the Camp Fire, the deadliest wildfire disaster in 100 years, which stuck much of Butte County in 2018. The fire resulted in 85 deaths, covered almost 240 square miles, and almost totally destroyed the towns of Paradise, Concow and other communities.

Sadly, this tragic death toll was surpassed in 2023 by fires that engulfed Maui, with almost 100 dead and many still missing.

Our region is no stranger to wildfires. Most of us remember the Cedar, Witch, Cocos, Guejito, Rice and Lilac fires which devastated much of San Diego County. In the aftermath of those fires, we’ve learned a great deal. For example, San Diego Gas & Electric maintains one the country’s most advanced utility weather networks. Over 190 weather stations monitor high fire risk areas and generate microclimate forecasts and fire modeling that anticipate the path of potential fires. This data is shared with fire agencies throughout the county in advance of adverse weather events such as Santa Ana winds, and is also used by system operators to shut down circuits to avoid fires generated by downed power lines. Individual homeowners can also help prepare for the inevitable. Defensible space is essential, especially for those living in the backcountry. Another Sexually Violent Predator It is with profound disappointment and deep concern that I express my opposition to the decision allowing the placement of Sexually Violent Predator Alvin Quarles, also known as the “Bolder than Most” rapist, back into San Diego County. The judge’s decision is devastating for our community, and I strongly believe there is no place for such a monstrous individual in our midst.

For over three years, Mr. Quarles terrorized our communities, committing heinous acts of rape against a dozen women. His behavior’s consistent and egregious nature underscores the fact that he should never be allowed to re-enter our community. My heart goes out to the victims who now must endure the painful prospect of reliving their trauma, knowing that this dangerous individual will be reintegrated into society.

Sexually Violent Predators represent the worst of the worst. State classification as a sexually violent predator is reserved for individuals who have been convicted of violent sex crimes against at least one victim and have been diagnosed with a condition that increases the likelihood of re-offending. Time and time again, we have witnessed these placements despite over-

whelming public outcry against such decisions.

I want to assure the residents of San Diego County that I am committed to doing everything I can to prevent such placements in our community. The safety and well-being of our residents must always be our top priority, and I will continue to advocate for measures that protect our community from individuals who threaten public safety.

I am bringing forward legislation at our next Board meeting to prevent sexually violent predators from being placed in our community. I will keep you updated as we get closer to the vote.

This decision, once again, underscores the need for comprehensive reform in the way sexually violent predators are handled within our legal system.

There will be an update on February 16 regarding where Mr. Quarles will be placed in San Diego County.

How do I get PayPal to reverse a fraudulent charge. Can you help?

PayPal won’t refund an unauthorized charge on John Boham-Cook’s account, even though it reversed two others by the same fraudster.

How can he get the company to see things his way?

Q: I had three unauthorized transactions on my PayPal account recently. PayPal blocked one of them and issued a refund. A short while later, PayPal refunded the second fraudulent transaction. But the third transaction, for $2,600, is still in my account.

All of these transactions were made by the same fraudster at the same time from Dortmund, Germany. It looks like the scammer somehow got my password. But I have never published my credentials and they are not held on my computer -- only on an encrypted USB stick accessed when I need the info. Also, I always use PayPal from the same IP address.

I have contacted PayPal by phone numerous times and appealed. PayPal has refused to acknowledge the fraudulent transaction.

In the meantime, I have changed my password and set up two-step verification. I blocked my bank from sending any money to PayPal, but I would like to settle this dispute and wondered if you could help. ~ John Boham-Cook, Augsburg, Germany A: PayPal should have blocked all three transactions. The Rise and Demise of the Daily Newspaper

By Tom Morrow The history of the American newspaper is far too large to jam into an 800-word column, but here’s a shot at some of the basics.

The “word-count” of the average daily newspaper such as the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, or San Diego Union, amounts to a sizeable 200-to-300 -page book. Weeklies like the average community newspaper such as this one can be as labor intensive, turning out enough copy to fill a small paperback novel.

The newspaper can be recog-

nized to publish legal documents of recorded judicial, business, and governmental minutes for school districts, city councils, and county boards. To be officially considered a “publication of record,” county courts “adjudicate” a newspaper for printing “Legal Notices,” those governmental minutes and records from school districts, city and county boards and anything else where public monies have been or are proposed being spent. These include marriage, divorce, birth and death notices.

The nation’s first newspaper, “Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick,” lasted only one day - Sept. 25, 1690. It was printed in Boston. The British Colonial governor thought it was too radical and had it suppressed after its first edition. In 1704, some 14 years later, a different governor allowed The Boston News-Letter to be published weekly, and it became the first continuously printed newspaper in the Ameri-

can colonies. Soon after, weekly newspapers, more or less with a commercial slant, began publishing in New York and Philadelphia as well as Boston.

John Peter Zenger was a New York German journalist in New York City who printed The New York Weekly Journal. He was accused of libel in 1734 by William Cosby, the royal governor of New York, but the jury acquitted Zenger, who became history’s symbol for freedom of the press. Ben’s older brother, James Franklin, launched The New England Courant. It was a distinctive newspaper that annoyed the New England elite while providing reader entertainment and establishing a kind of literary precedent. Ben got his literary start at the Courant.

Prior to the 1830s, a majority of U.S. newspapers were aligned with a political party or platform.

For the most part, that hasn’t changed all that much. In years

past newspapers generally declared political positions on the editorial page(s), keeping the news columns as objective as possible. Unfortunately, often writer bias has crept into news reporting to the point the term “fake news” has become commonplace charges by those readers in disagreement on particular editorial position(s).

Since the founding of the nation, daily newspapers have played an important role in American society. San Diego County’s newspapers have been important to our everyday life … that is until the last few years. The advent of the Internet has revolutionized delivery of local, state, and international news and opinion.

In 1980, our County had seven daily newspapers and more than double that number in weeklies.

Is my flight safe? How To Tell Before You Board Flying may be the safest way to travel, but it sure hasn’t felt that way lately.

Lack of safety equipment: Does the plane have all the necessary safety equipment, such as oxygen masks, life jackets, and fire extinguishers? If any of this equipment is missing, it could be a problem.

Images of a flaming aircraft on a Tokyo runway and of a door blown off an Alaska Airlines flight seem to have undermined public confidence in air travel.

Stains or leaks: Water stains could indicate a leak in the fuselage, while oil stains might point to an engine problem.

And there’s also this burning question: Could anyone have known this would happen?

Maybe.

But first, a reality check: Flying in the U.S. is actually safe. Really safe.

“You’d have to fly every single day for literally thousands of years before you’d ever have a serious accident,” says Anthony Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor.

George Novak, president of the National Air Carrier Association, a trade group, says there are numerous safeguards in place to prevent an aviation disaster. So, for example, when Alaska Airlines 1282 suffered a midair blowout, the Federal Aviation Administration acted quickly to ground and inspect the aircraft.

“Flying in the United States is very safe,” he says.

As it turns out, there are some telltale signs that your next flight could be dangerous, particularly if you’re traveling internationally or in a country with lax aviation regulations.

Still, people want to know if you can tell if you’re boarding a dangerous flight. Experts say you might.

Can you tell if your plane is safe?

Ask any aviation professional if you can eyeball a commercial plane as you board to determine its safety, and they’ll probably laugh at you.

“Typically, there’s nothing the average passenger can see,” says Justin Maasdam, a pilot who runs a digital pilot app called Skymatrix.

“Besides, historically, plane crashes have not had visible indications that something was wrong.”

How about a quick visual inspection or interviewing the crew? Not really an option, either.

“You can’t kick the tires, look under the hood of the flight you’re taking, or talk to the captain,” says Harding Bush, associate director for security operations at Global Rescue, a provider of security and travel risk management services.

But there are red flags that might indicate the plane isn’t airworthy.

They might not apply to a commercial flight operating in the U.S., but if you’re traveling on a small charter aircraft, like a six-passenger plane touring the Grand Canyon, or in a country where there are fewer safety regulations, there is a checklist.

Your Plane Might Be Unsafe If This Happens Here are a few signs that your plane may not be airworthy: Bad smells: Strong odors, fuel fumes, or burning smells could be a sign of a problem with the plane’s systems. If you smell raw sewage, it could be a sign of an improperly maintained aircraft.

Broken or loose components: If you see panels attached with duct tape or parts of your seatbacks, armrests, or overhead compart-

Visible damage: Dents, scratches, or rust on the outside of the aircraft could be a sign of trouble. Minor cosmetic issues don’t necessarily indicate a safety concern, but significant damage should give you pause.

Worn-out interior: Excessive wear and tear could also suggest a lack of proper maintenance and attention to detail.

Note that seeing any of these things doesn’t automatically make the plane unsafe. But you should mention your concern to a crewmember before you depart. If they’re dismissive, you might be on the wrong flight.

Are you overreacting to the recent aviation scares?

That said, it’s easy for safety concerns to become overblown. A dent on a plane doesn’t mean it’s not airworthy. An older interior doesn’t necessarily mean the plane is unsafe.

For example, last summer, I flew from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Thailand, on a discount airline.

But something felt familiar about the cabin interior. The purple and white color scheme in the interior didn’t match the airline’s livery.

My seat was well-worn, but I didn’t become concerned until I looked at the seatback. The instructions were not in Thai or English -- they were in Icelandic. Then I realized we were sitting on a repurposed Wow Air plane. Wow went out of business in 2019, and my airline had acquired some of its aircraft.

It hadn’t bothered refurbishing the cabin interiors, and I worried that maybe it had overlooked something else.

I shouldn’t have. Thailand’s airlines are well-regulated and safe, and after I got over my initial shock, my flight to Chiang Mai felt like a blast from the past. Well, maybe that’s a poor choice of words. Shall we just say it was kind of retro?

Who Is In Charge?

In a recent discussion with some curious persons, I was asked to share my ideas about everything that seems wrong in our world.

Before answering that, I need to define the word wrong. Does it apply only to those who perceive what wrong means, or is there an absolute wrong? I will answer by what I hear people say.

Wrong to many people is when things go differently than they think they should. Who causes discord when tragedy, disease, distress, famine, earthquakes, hurricanes, death, or even a politician who seeks legislation different from our moral standards? Who is in charge? Or we might look at it from the standpoint of good happenings, such as the Miracle of Dunkirk during World War II or the many favorable weather conditions during the Revolutionary War, which favored the early Americans. Or it might be a profitable financial event, saving an eviction, property loss, or even good weather conditions.

There has been a belief that when good things happen, God is behind them. This is with some biblical basis. David, king of Israel, Pastor Huls believed that many of his victories and kingship were by God’s design. Even today, based on scripture, there is the belief that God raises leaders and even nations. This, of course, is most acceptable if all goes our way.

Do we ever take issue with this? When we won World War II, many said it was because God favored us as a nation. There was a genuine expression of thanks to God for our victory over the power of Satan.

Who needs the Smart Web?-Everyone!

90% of the World’s PCs (desktops, towers, notebooks, all-in-ones and micros) run Microsoft’s Windows (79%) or Apple’s Mac (11%) operating system. PC sales peaked in 2011 at 352 million units. By 2023 Worldwide PC sales had fallen to 242 million units. That’s a decline of over 30%, yet the number of PCs in use climbed steadily from 1.5 to 2.0 billion over the same period. Simple math tells us that the average PC in use in 2023 is about eight years old. That contrasts with the two to three year average life span of PCs in the 1980s and 90s.

Why is that?

The reason for the extended longevity of today’s PCs is pretty simple. Since the birth of the “IW” (“Intelligent Web) in 2001,

Internet based applications programs have rapidly replaced the PCs traditional “stand-alone” applications. Powerful Internet servers (computers) are much faster and more efficient than PCs. As a result, most PCs today are seldom used as “Personal Computers,” today they are “Internet Terminals”. Nearly any PC built after 2010 has enough CPU power, memory and storage capacity to accommodate optimal Internet speeds, so older PCs are able to maintain their functional relevancy. Because the Internet has expanded the useful lifespan of PCs, PC sales have been in general decline since 2011. In 2023 Apple’s PC sales dropped by over 30%, a significantly greater decline than 12% sales decline for Windows PCs. Apple PC users (even teachers) finally began to recognize the folly of paying $1200+ for an Apple PC that serves the same purpose (Internet terminal) as a $600 Windows PC. Today the World’s four largest PC brands and their market share are Lenovo 24%, HP 19%, Dell 18% and Apple 11%. By 2010 it was apparent that the Internet was becoming the main source of applications development and computing power. The PC age was over and the Internet age was here. In anticipation of declining PC sales, PC makers like Dell HP and Apple shifted their emphasis to network maintenance, applications development and other areas of technol-

ogy. Lenovo, a Chinese company already manufactured their PCs in China. HP, Dell and Apple “farmed out” the design and manufacture of their PCs to Chinese companies and turned sales, warranty, repair and maintenance over to multinational third party companies. Today neither HP, Dell nor Apple is involved in the design, manufacture or maintenance of PCs. They simply collect a fee for the use of their logos on Chinese PCs. Whether we like it or not, regardless of their source, PCs today are important Internet access devices.

The Internet has rapidly become the dominant source of civiliza-

tions communication and information. Internet connectivity is an ever growing necessity for people of all ages. Whether its communication, education, news, recreation or entertainment, nearly all human knowledge and activity is available on today’s Internet, AKA the IW or Intelligent Web. Why do Some Pets Take so Long to Find Homes?

Why do some pets get adopted right away and others spend months or even years at a shelter?

Here’s what Google said: The older an animal is, the more time it takes for it to get adopted.

Puppies on average spend less than a month in the shelter, which shows the clear preference of the adopters for dogs of younger age.

During kitten season from Spring to late Fall families pass by purrfectly good adult cats while the

eight- to ten-week-old kittens fly out the door.

Same with puppies. Some people want to start fresh instead of a “used” dog.

Look up “UNGRATEFUL Boy Doesn’t Want USED DOG, What Happens Is Shocking.” Rocky and his team tell the story of a boy who demands that his mom buy him a purebred puppy instead of adopting a shelter dog. The boy in the story believes that a purebred puppy, like the one his friend got, is better.

That said, why else do some pets take longer to find homes?

• A physical condition that limits their activity.

• Not the right size or color for the breed. It may look like a Chihuahua and bark like a Chihuahua, but if it weighs 15 pounds, that’s too big.

• Kennel behavior. A great cat who hides in their enclosure, or a dog who barks at everyone who passes by, takes longer to adopt.

• A physical condition that requires lots of activity.

• Pets who need ongoing medication.

• Pets who have been returned. Not their fault, but a returned pet seems to be a red flag.

Personally, I believe there’s a perfect family for every pet. For some of them, it just takes their families longer to find them.

As a woman of science and chemistry, Helen Murray Free gave the world many gifts and blessings, including a glucose self-detection test for diabetes as self-tests for hepatitis-A. So revolutionary was her achievements in setting new landmarks in science that on 1 May 2010, she was honoured for her diagnostic test strips which were designated: “A National Historic Chemical Landmark,” by the American Chemical Society.

Free’s mother, Daisy Free, died during an influenza epidemic, leaving the confused and traumatisd little girl forever somber that she never had the chance to really know her precious mommy.

In 2000, Helen Murray Free was inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame.

A decade later, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in New York.

In 2009, at the great age of 86, Helen Murray Free, slowly walked forward to humbly receive the “National Medal of Technology and Innovation” from President Barack Obama, a rare honour which only the U. S. President can bestow.

That day at the White House, wearing a bright red blazer, she was accepting her award for two people – herself and her precious mommy, whom she forever remembered clutching tightly and hugging as a small child. When summoned by the President, she slowly arose, her eyes sparkling, and smiling widely, she briefly looked heavenward, as if to say, “Mom, this is for you.”

The great woman genius, Helen Murray Free, died on 1 May 2021 at the great age of 98.

GRACE MURRAY HOPPER HELPED INVENT: “COBOL COMMON LANGUAGE” FOR COMPUTER COMMUNICATION. Dr. Grace Murray Hopper (19061992) was a curious child. At age seven she dismantled her alarm clock in order to fathom its mode of operation. Only problem was that the young child was unable to piece it back together again. The curiosity of genius which stirred within the little girl was so compelling that the seven-year-old succeeded in dismantling seven clocks before her angry mother stopped her!

As an adult, Hopper helped develop a common language with which computers could communicate, called Common Business-Oriented Language or COBOL (1959-61) for UNIVAC, the first commercial electronic computer. Aside from being a brilliant mathematician, and pioneer in data processing, she was the first woman to reach the rank of rear admiral in the U.S. Navy (1983).

Sadly, Hopper’s works were never patented. Her contributions were prior to computer software technology and were not considered a ‘patentable field.’

Here locally, The Paper is one of those few remaining publications where local news and legal reports are printed as well as a place where merchants can still advertise their businesses at reasonable cost.

The worries about airline safety come amid an FAA investigation into several high-profile runway incursions that prompted the agency to form a safety review team last year.

Travelers are now asking hard questions too, and they’re taking nothing for granted.

The message from passengers couldn’t be clearer: Air travel may be safe, but it can always be safer.

Who can disagree with that?

Elliott’s Tips For Avoiding An Unsafe Plane Avoid the blacklist: The European Union has a list of airlines banned from operating in its airspace. So does the FAA. The airlines are restricted because they do not meet minimum safety standards and have insufficient government oversight. If you’re traveling to the developing world, it might be a good idea to review the list and avoid those airlines. They might be operating in an unsafe manner.

Book a ticket on an airline you know: That’s particularly true if you’re flying outside the U.S. You’re almost always better off choosing a flag carrier as opposed to a discount startup, even if it costs a little more. Experts agree.

“I would recommend flying on reputable carriers,” says Shem Malmquist, an aviation safety expert at Florida Institute of Technology. “They have strong oversight and do everything they can to ensure that the aircraft is airworthy prior to departure.”

Choose your aircraft type: You can use an app like Kayak or FlightRadar24 to get information about your aircraft type. In fact, some travelers have already started doing that to weed out 737 Max planes. Some of the information is quite detailed, says Bush, the director at Global Rescue. “You can find out about recent flight history and additional information like the aircraft age, when required upgrades were made and its overall safety record,” he says. Then you can make an informed decision about whether to fly.

Today’s younger generations have never really had a habit of reading a paper-printed newspaper … most get their news online from semi-reliable social outlets or on TV. For most of our lives we older folk, (aged 60 yearsplus) have depended upon our local print publications to keep us apprised of what’s happening at our community’s government, the courts and school districts as well as the business community.

Local dailies are disappearing across the nation and electronic news reports are taking their place. It is estimated some 2,000 daily newspapers will disappear in 2024. Locally, the now-defunct daily North County Times, at its peak, had a 100,000-plus readership. The 1995 merger of the Escondido Times-Advocate and the Oceanside Blade-Citizen became the NCT, but daily readership began to slide and the inevitable happened when advertising dried up. The San Diego Union purchased the NCT and a few months later ceased its publication causing dozens of North County staff members to lose their jobs. As a result, North San Diego County no longer has a daily newspaper reporting to its seven suburban cities. A number of online electronic news reports have joined the last of the area newsprint weeklies such as The Paper, taking the place of the various defunct daily newsprint publications.

For our young people pursuing a career in print journalism it’ll be tough going as more than half of California’s daily newspapers now are gone. As my generation’s journalists leave the scene, some of our newsprint publications are still with us … sort of … but you’ll have to go to a public library to find them. They’re mostly filed on microfiche records. You can’t hold them in your hand but you can still view them on a captured video page of a chosen date when daily newspapers reported our history of days gone by.

Beware: today there are far fewer journalistic eyes and ears monitoring all levels of our government since the demise of our local newspapers. We always end up deserving the kind of government we’ve allowed to take place.

Women from page 13 PATRICIA BATH CREATED: PIONEERED CATARACT LASERPHACO PROBE. Dr. Patricia Bath was one of the greatest and most important women inventors in the field of ophthalmology (branch of medicine which deals with the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the human eye).

Dr. Bath dedicated herself to the treatment and prevention of blindness, which led her to the discovery of Cataract Laserphaco Probe (patented in 1988), which uses the power of a laser to quickly and painlessly remove (vapourise) cataracts from patients’ eyes, rendering the olde drill-like device and method, obsolete.

Born to poor parents in Harlem, Dr. Bath became the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent.

With another invention, the genius of Dr. Bath allowed her to restore sight to people who had been blind for over 30 years!

Bath founded and became the first president of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness.

HISTORY’S UNMATCHED 12YEAR-OLDE GIRL GENIUS. At age 12 she went to work – as many other children did – when the Industrial Revolution was in full swing. As a small child, Knight went to work in a textile factory where she became greatly troubled when she saw many other children her own age injured, and even killed, by accidents caused by the shuttle, or as it was called, “The Kiss of Death.”

The 12-year-old girl was horrified when she witnessed a child worker actually stabbed by a steel-tipped shuttle that shot out of a mechanical loom. These terrifying visions troubled her to the point of giving her nightmares, a tormenting experience for such a small child to have to endure.

Miraculously, within weeks, the small girl quickly designed a stopmotion safety device that prevented the weaving machines from ejecting dangerous projectiles! The little girl’s invention gadget automatically turned off the loom whenever too much stress was placed on it.

The safety device for the loom was quickly adopted by other textile factories, thus preventing countless injuries and death!

Due to prevailing laws and social restrictions of that era, the little girl’s revolutionary invention was, sadly, never patented.

History records no other childinventor at age 12 with this level of significant achievement which actually proved to prevent severe injuries and even human death, as Margaret Knight did.

History has finally caught up to Margaret Ethridge Knight.

She has now been formally acknowledged as, not only the “Female Edison,” but she is clearly recognized by world historians today as: “The most famous 19thcentury woman inventor.”

Believe it or not, Knight went on to give the world other historic inventions, such as a numbering machine (patented in 1894), as well as several devices relating to rotary engines (patented between 1902 and 1914), as well as innovations related to the internal combustion engine (1913).

Her inventive genius sailed beyond our American shores when Margaret Knight was awarded the “Decoration of the Royal Legion of Honour,” by England’s Queen Victoria in 1871.

Now acknowledged as one of history’s greatest and most eclectic inventors, Margaret Ethridge Knight’s recognition as a woman inventor in our school history books was glacier-slow in being acknowledged.

She was finally inducted into the “National Inventors Hall of Fame” in 2006, more than 92 years after she died.

Margaret Knight never married and died in 1914 at age 76.

Though she is gone, vestiges of Knight remain with us today. Her little box-making machine is in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. This little girl, who began inventing at age 12, and eventually held an astounding 87 U.S. patents, is still with us today through her innovative and creative mind.

There are obviously too many women of genius and invention to list here, but I hope to whet your appetite to seek out further reading regarding these extraordinary women of genius, often forgotten.

2024 Landscape Makeover Contest Open For Entries creating your new waterwise wonderland easier, take advantage of the Water Authority’s free virtual workshops as well as our short and educational online videos.”

The 2024 WaterSmart Landscape Makeover competition seeks the best in landscaping makeover projects from 12 participating San Diego County water agencies.

This popular annual competition is now open for entries. Its goal is to showcase residential water-saving landscaping ideas, inspiring others to consider their own projects.

Different approaches by the winning entrants from past years demonstrate the wide range of options for creating lush, beautiful landscapes that rely more on native plants and less on large areas of thirty grass. The creative results and personal stories help inform and inspire homeowners to consider their own new yard designs.

Participating agencies in 2024 include California American Water, the cities of Escondido and Oceanside, Helix Water District, Olivenhain Municipal Water District, Otay Water District, Padre Dam Municipal Water District, Rincon Del Diablo Municipal Water District, San Dieguito Water District, Sweetwater Authority, Vallecitos Water District, and Vista Irrigation District.

Each agency winner receives a $250 gift certificate and public recognition for their efforts. Homeowners may also be eligible for turf removal rebates and other

WaterSmart landscapes are more climate resilient than traditional lawns by using less water, fertilizers, and pesticides. They provided a happier habitat for pollinators.

The majority of residential water use in San Diego County is

used outdoors, primarily for water landscaping. When yards contain a large amount of grass, that can greatly increase overall water consumption. Conservation education efforts, including the WaterSmart Landscape Contest, focus on ways to create landscapes customized for your favorite activities, incorporating the needs of children, pets, accessible areas, pollinators, and specialty gardens.
