LINCOLN’S TERRIFYING PROPHECY

“If America Falls, the Cause Must Spring Within Us!”

By Friedrich Gomez Those most terrifying words of admonishment for America -- and the root cause behind them – are nearly 200 years olde, and yet they feel uncomfortably familiar, palpable, and even possibly prophetic for many concerned observers today.

Those most disturbing words come from our very own Abraham Lincoln whose vision was fixed beyond the horizon and on what dangers the United States might face in the distant future.

2023 marks exactly 185 years since Honest Abe made his now-seemingly prophetic warning to a nation of people.

Scholars tell us that this key passage was part of an 1838 speech he delivered, as follows: “Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the Earth in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a Commander, could not by force take a drink from the

Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a 1,000 years! At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer: If it ever reach us, it must spring-up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves, be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men, we must live through all time . . . or die by suicide.”

Lincoln was still in his 20s when he spoke those terrifying words of admonishment to disbelieving and uncomprehending ears.

At the time, his contemporaries just didn’t get it.

How could they?

After all, the young Republican uttered those strange words more than two decades before he even became our 16th U.S. President.

And a quarter of a century before the American Civil War even started.

So, indeed, many of his contemporaries wondered amongst themselves, “What does all this rubbish mean, anyway: the danger to Ameri-

WHAT ARE LINCOLN’S WORDS TELLING US TODAY? Professor Michael Burlingame, who chairs the Abraham Lincoln Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Springfield, puts a contemporary spin on things:

Could the recent, shocking, and unprecedented violent and deadly siege within the hallowed halls of our nation’s capitol by insurrectionists on 6 January 2021 be a precursor to our eventual decay and demise as a lawful, unified nation whose democracy is central, sacred, and never to be defiled?

“Lincoln was denouncing mob violence which would lead to social chaos, provoking the public to demand law and order . . . when there would be none.

“No law and order to stem the tide of open mob anarchy, insurrection, all of which would rule tyrannically, and openly, within our streets and cities, and upper seats of government, all with virtual impunity.”

It would also mean the loss of fundamental rights, such as Freedom of Speech, loss of Self-Esteem as Americans, and dividing a nation with distrust and racial strife. It would be the death blow to democracy, our U. S. Constitution, and the U. S. government as we know it today.

HOW WOULD WE ANSWER LINCOLN’S QUESTION TODAY? How would we, in good conscience, answer Lincoln’s question today: “At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected?”

Or could the Great Emancipator’s words accurately fit the description of widespread vigilante mob violence fueled by distrust of authority and racial division such as when some U. S. cities were, ostensibly, held hostage -- weeks on end -- from the unjustified death of the African-American, George Floyd, at the hands of Minneapolis Police (an event which the U. S. legal system ruled unjustified and a breach of law and order within the public domain) and the threatened chants of “Abolish the Police”?

That pivotal event created a historic backlash, still hugely viable and influential today, in the formation of the Black Lives Matter Movement (BLM), which has been evaluated as: “The largest single, movement in terms of participation in U. S. history.”

Despite its name, the Black Lives Matter Movement consists of a variety of races: 60% of White adults say they at least support some aspects of BLM. 77% of Hispanics and 75% of Asians also affiliate themselves along certain BLM day and asked, “Papa, I have da biggest feet in da third grade. Is dat becuss I’m Norvegian?”

Of course, you can’t be from Minnesota and not know a few Lena and Ole stories . . . or variations of them. But, in this day and age, it is hazardous to use any jokes about ethnic groups. Many politicians and other public figures have gotten into trouble by using ethnic jokes. It is much safer to tell a story using a lost civilization like the Hittites. You’ve read about the Hittites in the Bible. They no longer exist. So, with your permission, I would like to tell you a story about two Hittites named Ole and Sven.

On the third hole he had just scored his first ever hole-in-one when his cell phone rang... It was a doctor notifying him that his wife had just been in a accident and was in critical condition and in ICU. The man told the doctor to inform his wife where he was and that he’d be there as soon as possible.

As he hung up he realized he was leaving what was shaping up to be his best ever round of golf.

He decided to get in a couple of more holes before heading to the hospital. He ended up playing all eighteen, finishing his round shooting a personal best 61, shattering the club record by five strokes and beating his previous best game by

Simply put, are all of these earlier unprecedented socio-political upheavals truly the “shape of things to come” for a terminally-ailing nation from within?

Regardless of one’s socio-political stance, the shocking images of the violent beating of the man goes on for a (full 20-plus minutes) without any sign of intervention to help the innocent victim whose only crime was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

LINCOLN’S DANGER SIGN: “WHEN THE PUBLIC DEMANDS LAW & ORDER & THERE IS NONE.” According to many concerned observers, this has already happened when newspapers across America declared in bold headlines: “THE 100-PLUS DAYS PORTLAND, OREGON WAS HELD HOSTAGE BY ANARCHISTS.” Lincoln’s cardinal warning sign of: “When the public demands law and order only to find there is none” would certainly seem to apply here, and all around these United States during those unstoppable, tumultuous months-on-end when violent protests reigned with virtual impunity.

To wit: violent protests and unchecked mob pillaging spread to over 40% of all counties in America, eventually spreading to over 2,000 cities and towns in all 50 U. S. states, including all five permanently-inhabited U. S. territories.

Some ‘live’ newscasts were difficult to watch.

One video shows, as described more than 10. He was jubilant....

Then he remembered his wife.

Feeling guilty he dashed to the hospital. He saw the doctor in the corridor and asked about his wife’s condition.

The doctor glared at him and shouted, “You went ahead and finished your round of golf didn’t you! I hope you’re proud of yourself!”

“While you were out for the past four hours enjoying yourself at the country club your wife has been languishing in the ICU! It’s just as well you went ahead and finished that round because it will be more than likely your last! For the rest of her life she will require round the clock care and you will be her care giver! She will need IV’s; you will have to change her colostomy bag every 3 hours; she will have to be spoon fed 3 times a day and don’t forget the hygiene care.”

The man broke down and sobbed.

The doctor chuckled and said, “I’m just teasing you. She’s dead.

What’d you shoot?”

Regardless of one’s bank of reasoning and ideology, in the eyes of most, such indiscriminate violence in looting and burning down stores, banks, innocent neighbourhoods, and businesses, was condemned (by a plurality of different races).

HAVE WE ALREADY REACHED THAT “POINT OF NO RETURN”?

Not long ago, on 13 August 2021, Eric Schnurer, highly esteemed writer and longtime official advisor to U. S. state and local governments, finally asked that most terrifying of questions: “Has the U. S. already passed the point of no return?”

Already the insidious trending has begun to slowly rid America from its underlying values, fundamental identity, dignity, and even the vulgar raping of any vestige of American self-worth.

WORDS “AMERICAN” & “AMERICA” NOW TAUGHT AS NEGATIVES IN OUR SCHOOLS. Yes you read that correctly.

Impossible, you say?

Never in a trial of a thousand years?

You may even be saying quietly to yourself: “If I haven’t read or heard of this on the news, then it can’t be true!”

And perhaps thinking: “A story this big and important would’ve been covered. So I don’t believe it!”

And yet, in this exclusive report to The Paper, this is exactly what is taking root – slowly and silently -within our very own trusted ‘seats of higher learning’ today.

Remember, the most effective and dangerous of social cancers are the ones that quietly sneak up on you, not the ones which come in through the front door like a loud, boisterous uncle.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE ERASES WORDS “AMERICAN” & “AMERICA” AS NEGATIVE. One critical warning sign in our internecine battles is when our own country begins to teach that the very word which defines us: “American” -- is taught as offensive and, therefore, is eliminated from some schools, college campuses, and universities.

The sobering fact that you may be reading this for the very first time in The Paper, is proof of how this truly dangerous and insidious disease is festering – unnoticed, within our own nation.

For example, the University of New Hampshire has issued a “University Bias Free Language Guide,” which stated that the word “American” was definitely “problematic.”

Why? Well, the university’s official “Bias-Free Language Guide” said that the word “American” is offensive

because it does not recognise South America, Latin America, Central America, etc. and, therefore: “Assumes that the U.S. is the only country inside these continents.”

And this type of anti-American indoctrination is nothing new – it’s spreading and happening all around the nation at various colleges and universities too numerous to mention here.

From New Hampshire in the East, all the way across to Colorado on the West, this trend is surreptitiously growing (and largely unnoticed by the general U. S. populace).

Joining ranks with the University of New Hampshire on the East Coast is the highly-prestigious Colorado State University located at Fort Collins in the western United States.

And although this is nothing new, most Americans are still unaware of this slow decay. And are shocked to even read about it here!

Yet, it’s been festering for years, under the radar, and unchecked.

For example, back on 27 July 2019, Colorado State Chancellor, Tony Frank, has established the school’s “Inclusive Language Guide,” which also states that the words “America” and “American” are among words deemed to be non-inclusive and, therefore, are wrong.

Colorado State University at Fort Collins is the prestigious and official flagship university of the Colorado State University System – and the campus is suggesting alternative titles to refer to an “American” so as not to offend anyone.

The college chancellor suggested in its “Inclusive Language Guide,” various alternatives to the word “American” such as: “U.S. citizen” or perhaps “person from the U. S.” Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker took issue with Colorado State University with an op-ed for the Washington Times: “Instead of spending so much time worrying about ways not to offend anyone (at the expense of America and our country), it would be nice if our colleges and universities actually worried about teaching our students,” Walker wrote.

Many of the most august scholars today believe that these are all indisputable warning signs of which Abraham Lincoln admonished us – and that America can only fall from within, when we ourselves expunge our own quintessential core values.

Karl Strauss Outpost San Marcos Opens Fifth San Diego County Location Karl Strauss, San Diego’s longest continuously operating postProhibition brewing company, has opened the first phase of its 85,000-square-foot beer garden concept Karl Strauss Outpost San Marcos. Also referred to as The Outpost, this marks the brewery’s fifth San Diego County location and the ninth overall in Southern California.

The Outpost, located at 1293 Armorlite Drive at the corner of Las Posas Road just one block north of California State Route 78, is Karl Strauss’ first neighborhood beer garden, where guests can relax in a two-acre outdoor setting and enjoy San Diego’s beautiful weather year-round.

The Outpost is open Wednesday – Sunday. Hours of operation are 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday – Friday and 1:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Saturday – Sunday.

The Bar, which is housed in a custom-fabricated cargo container, serves the same award-winning beer as Karl’s brewpubs, as well as alternative alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

I learned about this tonight at about 10.30pm but am up at 2 am because I thought the story should be told so that if there was anybody out there who was moved to do something this, they might want to spare the life of this dog.

I have heard from people whose job it is to put animals to sleep, mostly dogs, that the animal knows what is going on. They either sense something from the spirits of those who have gone before or they just somehow gather the vibes from the feel of death in the room and the mannerisms of the people there around them, they know what is about to happen to them.

Some know it when they are being dragged on a leash down the hall to that room with all four legs stiffly outstretched trying to stop with every ounce of energy they have. But it is futile.

Soldier knew what they were going to do to him and he stretched out his paw to the hand of the attendant in front of him and in that instant, making eye contact, a message passed between them. It was something like, “Please don’t do this to me. I don’t want to die. I am a good dog. Can’t you help me, Mister? Please....”

Literally a second before the deadly injection, the attendant said. “Stop.

Wait. Soldier just put his paw into my hand. I can’t do this. Let’s give him a break. Let’s give him some more time.” With that, Soldier was taken down off the table and was spared a premature date with “the needle”. He was given until October 30. So, as I said, I read about this tonight at 10.30 and here it is 2.15 am but I couldn’t sleep until I got this out. I was literally propelled to tell Soldier’s story by forces that would just not let me rest or sleep.

It was like they were saying, “Get out of bed and tell people about this dog RIGHT NOW.” There was to be no arguing on this... Something or someone somewhere, maybe Soldier’s guardian angel was not going to give me peace until this was done. So there you have it.

My hope is that someone out there within reach of this ad will see it and decide that maybe now is the time they need to get a family pet.

Constituent input is very important to me as I serve as your representative in Sacramento.

Your opinions and suggestions help guide my decision making process on legislation and policy priorities that come before me on the Assembly floor.

With over 39 million people, California is the nation’s most populous state. Just one county, Los Angeles, has more people than 40 states. That creates lopsided urban majorities that dominate the Legislature. The resulting laws, policies and regulations are often out of sync with large numbers of voters living in more rural and suburban areas, like the 75th Assembly District here in San Diego County.

Though the Legislature is not in session, important issues remain.

Recent hot topics received in my District Office include homelessness, crime and drug abuse, and the serial looting of stores. We’re also getting lots of input about the overall cost of living (including gasoline and utility costs), the cost and availability of homeowner’s insurance, wildfire safety and preparedness, public education, and many more.

When the Legislature is in session, we receive pro and con comments on dozens of high-priority bills. This year these included

legislation dealing with restrictions on Second Amendment rights, gender issues involving child custody, parental concerns over state education policies, proposals to increase taxes -- it’s a long list.

We also sometimes get comments about national or even international concerns. The wars in Ukraine, the Middle East, allegations of corruption at the federal level, border security, even comments on the new Speaker of the House, have all been received.

These are federal issues, and should be directed to members of the House of Representatives, or to one of California’s United States Senators.

Addressing Homelessness and Addiction Recovery It’s no secret that homelessness is the most pressing issue in our state and county. While we are undoubtedly one of the most prosperous countries in human history, the sight of thousands of individuals living on our streets remains unacceptable. We can and must do better.

The legislation aims to amplify the provision of sober living homes in San Diego County. Our initial step will involve providing housing for 100 homeless individuals in North County. If successful, we plan to extend this assistance to all homeless individuals in addiction recovery across the entire county.

One of the biggest challenges facing those living on the streets is the burden of drug and alcohol addiction. Over a third of San Diego’s homeless population struggles with a substance use disorder involving addiction to drugs and/ or alcohol. At our last Board of Supervisors meeting we unanimously passed a pivotal Board letter I brought forward, dedicated to aiding individuals who are actively working in recovery to overcome addiction and are now seeking stable housing.

Living on the streets, surrounded by the prevalent presence of drugs and alcohol, poses a formidable challenge to maintaining sobriety.

It is imperative that we prioritize these individuals, as they possess a significant chance of success. This initiative is not housing first; it is housing second, providing a secure and stable home post-achievement of sobriety to aid them in regaining their footing. I will keep you updated about our progress in this endeavor and sincerely hope to have your support for this crucial item. Together, we can work towards a San Diego where each community member can have a fresh start and a brighter future.

In San Diego County, there are approximately 900 individuals currently engaged in outpatient treatment for addiction recovery but remain homeless. These individuals diligently attend meetings, undergo regular testing, and exert tremendous effort toward their recovery journey.

La-Z-Boy furniture delivery delay: How do I get my recliners now?

La-Z-Boy has delayed Claire Engkvist’s furniture by more than a year. What does she have to do to get it?

Q: I am writing to you to let you know how extremely disappointed, dismayed and disgusted I am with La-Z-Boy’s customer service.

In March 2022, I placed an order for two La-Z-Boy recliners with a local furniture store in Cheyenne, Wyo. I also ordered three yards of matching fabric so that I could make my own headrest covers, arm covers and pillows for my couch. A store representative told me my chairs would be delivered in December 2022.

I was not in a tremendous hurry to get my new chairs and felt that waiting for nine months would be worth it to get exactly what I wanted.

December arrived, and I heard nothing from the store. So I called them only to find out that my chairs had not been delivered as planned. They said the chairs would be ready in January.

But January came and went. I called again, and a representative said it would be a “couple more weeks.”

February came and went, as did March and April, and every time I called for an update, they told me it would be a couple more weeks.

Finally, in May, La-Z-Boy said the chairs were ready for delivery. But then it sent only one chair. I refused delivery. Now La-Z-Boy is saying it will be anProblem Solved continued on page 12

Historically Speaking ‘She’s a Real Doozie!’

Duesenberg cars were considered some of the best built and fastest of that era. The company’s cars won Indianapolis in 1922, 1924, 1925, and 1927.

By Tom Morrow During the 20th century there were a number of automobiles that made a substantial impact upon the American public. While some were short-lived, most auto lovers and collectors of today know well these attempts at automotive legend. For the most part there were two outstanding goals: power and luxury.

One of the earliest American racing and luxury automobiles was produced by the Duesenberg Motor Company. The firm was founded in 1913, by brothers August and Frederick Duesenberg in St. Paul, Minnesota, where they built engines and racing cars. In 1916, the brothers moved their operations to Elizabeth, New Jersey to manufacture truck engines during World War I. In 1919, after the war they moved the company to Indianapolis, Indiana, home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and established the Duesenberg Automobile & Motor Company.

Although the Duesenberg brothers were world-class, self-taught engineers, they weren’t good businessmen; they were unable to sell all the units of their first passenger car, the “Model A.” It was an extremely advanced and expensive automobile selling at $6,500. It offered features such as an overhead camshaft, four-valve cylinder heads, and the first four-wheel hydraulic brakes on a passenger car. Among the celebrities who purchased this model were Hollywood movie stars Tom Mix and Rudolph Valentino.

Model A Duesenberg dealership deliveries did not start until December 1921. Sales lagged and the goal of hand-building 100 cars each month proved impossible.

The company struggled to turn out one per day. In 1922 no more than 150 cars were manufactured, and over a period of six years only 650 Model A units were built and sold.

But each of the hand-made cars were classic – a few Model A series still exist in museums or with private collectors.

In 1925, after the company was taken over by luxury car builder and businessman Errett Lobban Cord, the new combined company

1923 Duesenberg Model A was renamed “Duesenberg, Inc.” By the time the world-wide Great Depression hit in October 1929, Duesenberg, Inc. had built about 200 cars. An additional 100 orders were filled in 1930.

Two of the newer “Model J” series reached the whopping price of $25,000, at a time when the average rich executive earned less than $5,000 a year. A series of minor modifications were carried out, but most of the Model J design remained the same up until Cord closed the factory in 1937.

Unlike most other American manufacturers, Duesenberg did not switch to a fully synchronized gearbox in the mid-1930s, which made the Model J difficult to drive and outdated. Still the Model J quickly became one of the most popular luxury cars, as well as a status symbol in the U.S. and Europe. The very rich and famous drove the Model J, including Gangster Al Capone, Hollywood notables like Greta Garbo, Howard Hughes, Mae West, Marion Historically Speaking continued on page 12

Amtrak canceled my train to Baltimore. Why can’t I get a credit for a new ticket?

When Amtrak cancels John deCastro’s train from Boston to Baltimore, he asks for a refund. But there’s another ticket involved -and Amtrak isn’t responding.

Q: I recently tried to change an Amtrak ticket from Boston to Baltimore. I couldn’t find a way to do it online, and Amtrak’s online chat was of no help. When I reached the call center I found out that the train was canceled.

An Amtrak agent told me that they could not change my train reservation but didn’t mention that my train had been canceled.

Now I am trying to apply all or part of my reservation to the cost of a new ticket. I bought a new ticket for $127 online. The original fare was $74.

An Amtrak agent suggested I

should ask for a refund of the difference between the rail fares.

Given that Amtrak canceled the original reservation, I think I am owed a refund of $53. I asked Amtrak, and it has not responded.

I escalated my request in writing to one of the executive contacts on your consumer advocacy website but have heard nothing. Can you help me? ~ John deCastro, San Francisco A: This should have been two simple transactions. Amtrak canceled your first train from Boston to Baltimore. You should have received a full refund for that. And transaction number two? You buy a new ticket.

Instead, Amtrak combined these into one problem, turning it into a complex case that involved a cancellation and a credit. Oh boy.

Here’s the confusing part. It’s not entirely clear if you tried to change your ticket before Amtrak canceled it or afterward. If you did it before, then cancellation penalties might apply and you could lose part or all of your ticket credit. If, however, Amtrak canceled before you did, then you should have received a full refund or Amtrak would have rebooked you on another train without you having to buy a new ticket.

You followed all the right steps for resolving this, including keeping a paper trail and appealing to one of the executive contacts for Amtrak that I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.

Someone from Amtrak should have responded and straightened this out. The easiest fix would have been to just refund your first ticket.

By the way, you are not the first reader who has complained about Amtrak’s site. Amtrak has a stepby-step guide on changing your reservation on its site. Next time you have to change your ticket, you might want to check it out.

My inner consumer advocate says such a guide should not be necessary. It should be obvious how to change your ticket.

I contacted Amtrak on your behalf. The company refunded your $53.

Can I Refinance A Reverse Mortgage?

by Laura Strickler Many homeowners still have a mortgage that they make monthly payments on when they move into retirement. Making ends meet on a fixed income is a challenge at any time, but I think we can all agree that it is more difficult today. Everything costs so much more and there seems to be no end in sight.

Making a mortgage payment while on Social Security could take most, if not all, of that income. With interest rates at such high levels,

there can be a question of whether it is wise to refinance into a reverse mortgage. You may have an interest rate in the 3% range and looking at a reverse mortgage today is in the 7% range. That’s quite a difference! However, each situation is different and there may be many reasons for exploring the reverse mortgage option. Your social security may not be enough to cover the expense of that payment, no matter how low the rate. You may need to lighten your monthly expenses, for example, paying off existing debt on credit cards or monthly card payments. Eliminating or reducing monthly expenses gives you a “raise” so to speak, by not having to make those monthly payments.

This brings me to another frequently asked question: Can I refinance a reverse mortgage? The answer is yes! Of course, the numbers have to make sense. You are protected from refinancing without any true financial benefit to you. There are guidelines that have to be met in order to allow a refinance to take place. This is to protect you from people who would refinance your

loan in order to benefit them and not you.

As interest rates decrease, the loan amount will increase. Also, as you get older, your loan amount increases. And finally, as your home appreciates, your loan amount will increase with the combination of a decrease in interest rates and the increase in your age.

I have refinanced several clients.

The important thing to remember is that you have to receive a benefit.

While your current reverse mortgage balance is increasing each month, when you refinance, you can potentially slow that down by reducing the interest rate. An example is a refinance I worked on that actually increased the borrower’s line of credit by $80,000.

It also provided her with $60,000 in cash.

That cash helped her make some home improvements that she had been wanting for some time. All of this was accomplished while also

lowering her interest rate.

Another potential reason to refinance is to add another borrower to the loan. If there is a marriage and the new spouse wants to be able to live in the home should something happen to the borrowing spouse, that is a valid reason for refinancing.

So while interest rates are high now, the reverse mortgage is still a viable option to consider when entering retirement.

There is a new loan product available: the reverse mortgage second loan. This is an exciting product that is helping those still working who do have a low interest rate first mortgage to access their equity. I will write more on that next week.

It’s Toys for Tots Time at 5 County Airports Get that joyous feeling with a little help from the County and the Marine Corps. Drop off a new, unwrapped toy in a Toys for Tots donation box at one of five County airports.

Donation boxes are already out at McClellan Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, Gillespie Field in El Cajon, Fallbrook Airpark in Fallbrook, Ramona Airport in Ramona and Borrego Valley Airport in Borrego Springs.

Two of those airports, Fallbrook Airpark and Ramona Airport, will hold special Toys for Tots collection events in December. Uniformed Marines will be on hand to collect your gifts in person. And airport officials also hope to have aircraft displays and classic cars at those events.

The first event is scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2, at Ramona Airport, located at 2450 Montecito Road in Ramona. The second is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the next weekend, Saturday, Dec. 9, at Fallbrook Airpark, located at 2155 Air Park Road in Fallbrook.

Donations will be accepted until 1 p.m., Saturday December 9 at all of the airports except McClellan Palomar. Donations will be accepted at McClellan Palomar

through Friday, December 8.

The Pastor Says . . .

Thanks ~ Once a year, at least we Americans stop in our busy activities to gather with family, friends, and community to celebrate Thanksgiving day. It was always a big day in our home when we got together.

We had turkey or chicken as the main course meal and mincemeat or pumpkin pie as the dessert. For me, it was a weekend free of my college studies.

San Diego Humane Society is supporting families and their pets who need a little extra help.

Over the years, I have not only thought about those days of the past when I was not home with the family but separated due to military duty and the new world of my own family. It has given me time to reflect on the day’s meaning and its ramifications on social and spiritual values.

Living in America, with its abundance, is cause for thanks. Grocery stores contain limitless choices of foods from all over the world.

It is time to pause and give thanks for all we can enjoy. It is not always the abundance but the sustenance that matters. The pilgrims had enough to sustain them as we do.

Through the Community Pet Pantry, anyone can visit our campuses to pick up a bag of dog or cat food, and other supplies, as available.

The opening words of the Bible tell us, “And God created the heavens and the Earth.” Thanks, this includes God! There is one big final gesture in Thanksgiving - it is the giving part. I am pleased to see acts of charity and giving on the part of many, including the Salvation Army, civic clubs, families, churches, and individuals, each gathering food for the needy. It is the spirit of care, concern, love, and sharing that the day brings out in people. Perhaps some of that sharing spirit of those Early Native Americans has penetrated our self-indulgent lives with the ultimate concern of thanks and giving.

The Internet, Artificial Intelligence & Humanity Part II

Stanford University Professor Emeritus John McCarthy coined the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) in 1955. His definition of AI was “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines”.

The concept envisioned the possibility that machines might someday compete with the best mental efforts of humans. That possibility gained considerable reinforcement in 1997 when an AI engineered program running on IBM’s “Deep Blue” computer beat World chess champion Gary Kasparov.

In 2001 broadband (hi-speed) began to replace dial-up as the Internet access mode giving humans nearly instantaneous access to entirety of common and published knowledge. Today over 90% of Internet users have broadband In-

ternet access. Broadband Internets (BI) linkage to World-wide data bases combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to initiate a continuing explosion of cloud based applications that mark the transition from the “PC Era” to the “BIAI Era” (Broadband Internet Artificial Intelligence). All the “heavy lifting” in terms of data storage and processing power is now available on powerful network “servers”. PCs are no longer “Personal Computers,” they are “Internet terminals”. The “need for speed” and mass storage capability on local PCs, for the vast majority of home and business users, has been eliminated through the BIAI connection The BIAI combination has been with us for less than a quarter century but it has become obvious that the BIAI revolution will change human lives and culture as profoundly as any technology since man climbed out of the trees three million years ago. All human activity will feel its affect. Few of us stop to think how fully entwined BIAI technology has become in our daily lives. Dozens of devices use wired and wireless connections to monitor and control functions that we take for granted. BIAI monitors our health and fitness, it guards our homes, businesses and vehicles, it guides us to our destinations, alerts us to our scheduled obligations, tracks our financial activities, reports our credit worthiness, pays our bills, orders our Christmas presents, controls our home and business environments, checks our air quality and monitors dozens of other activities. BIAI connected

devices allow us instant access to the sum of human knowledge.

Will it rain today, what time does Lady Gaga go to bed or how many electrons are in the outer shell of a Plutonium atom. The BIAI knows these things. We conduct our social lives, keep in contact with friends and relatives, plan trips, make reservations and a myriad of other things. These are things that we’ve always done, but now we do it all with BIAI. Folks born prior to 1980 achieved adulthood before the BIAI arrived.

To a large extent their life styles were well established before BIAI. They tend to use features of the BIAI that enhance their established life patterns. By contrast, folks born after 1990 grew up with the BIAI. It was an integral part of their formative environment and helped shape who they are. The generations born

before 1980 have the distinction of being the last living humans to achieve adulthood without the BIAI. We are living fossils.

The BIAI changed the way we gather information, communicate and conduct our lives in much the way electrical power changed everything in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There are however, some significant differences between these two life changing technologies. First, it took a couple of centuries for electricity to conquer the world while the BIAI has changed the world in less than a quarter century. Secondly, electricity changed the way we did things, but it didn’t change us.

There seem to be significant differences between the folks over 40 and folks under 30. That’s our topic for next week’s conclusion of this series.

Nonprofit animal shelters still need money to operate. When I say operate, that covers water, electricity, and medical expenses including operations.

When people find out I work at an animal shelter, the response is usually “I wish I could do that.” The truth is it’s not a job for everybody.

I believe that with benevolence comes responsibility. It’s not enough to throw money at a problem. Make sure you donate to a reputable organization that will spend your money wisely. Start by checking Charity Navigator.org.

• Check their rating. Four stars is the highest.

• Check their score.

• Check fundraising efficiency.

That’s how much they spend to get you to give them one dollar.

• Check their income statement.

Are they spending more than

• How much of the income goes to the President / CEO? • Check their IRS Form 990. Is the organization telling the IRS the same thing they’re telling you?

• Compare with other charities providing the same services.

POWER OF “FREEDOM OF SPEECH” & “FREEDOM OF DEMOCRACY” IN VOTING PREVAILED. Regardless if one agrees or disagrees with Derrick Wilburn, it is now a moot point in Colorado’s public school system and for its children.

Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Democracy prevailed with the school board reaching their final decision with a freely democratic vote.

It was Wilburn’s stirring speech that had a deeply profound and intellectual effect and proved to be the deciding point in convincing the Colorado Springs School District 49 School Board to officially ban Critical Race Theory from all its classrooms.

However, today in 2023, some high schools are already teaching lessons and units on CRT, where students write papers demonstrating their facility with applying the theory, while other schools are introducing CRT concepts, such as ‘systemic racism’ and ‘White privilege,’ and ‘implicit bias’ and so on.

LINCOLN WARNED WE MUST NEVER LOSE OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH. If ever America is to truly fall from within (aside from the variables already discussed), one quintessential pillar that must never be toppled or erased, is our precious Freedom of Speech, our sacred First Amendment Right to the U.S. Constitution which vows: “Congress shall never prohibit the free exercise thereof; or abridging the Freedom of Speech.”

Once that is gone, then so shall our nation.

Already this is happening. And much of our Free Speech is already dead.

So say the vast majority of Americans today.

Many believe that to insidiously circumvent the Law of the Land and defile the flower which is our Freedom of Speech, a new tool had to be fashioned, re-invented, and repainted, and its name shall be known as: Political Correctness (PC) or as some allege: “Radical PC Gone Wrong.”

Slowly, the zeitgeist is – literally – nibbling away, eroding, undermining, and destroying a most crucial God-given privilege granted in the U. S. Constitution – an infringement once thought to be fundamentally impossible.

“U.S. ANTHEM & FLAG DISHONOURED” & THERE IS “NO PLACE FOR GOD.” Today, the American flag is ridiculed as a symbol of hatred and some U. S. Olympic athletes (and entire teams) have openly turned their backs and covered their heads when their U. S. National Anthem was played or the U. S. Flag unfurled.

And now, America’s biblical God and all Christian symbols are vilified, statues spat upon, and desecrated from coast-to-coast and yet not widely reported.

There is, literally, nothing sacred anymore for this emerging America which would have cause for Lincoln, today, to cringe, then weep.

Demands to remove statues of a White Jesus are already on the radical agenda of mob anarchists today.

This is nothing new, yet it goes hugely unnoticed to the American people.

In reviewing your lengthy paper trail -- by the way, great job of keeping all your correspondence -- I see that La-Z-Boy claims COVID was the reason for its delay. What happened? In 2020, La-ZBoy closed some of its factories and laid off workers. It’s possible that the company was having some trouble getting restarted, and that’s what it meant when it used COVID as an excuse.

Either way, La-Z-Boy should have given you a straight answer when you asked about your delivery. And by the way, you were right to reject a partial delivery.

I’ve seen companies get confused about exactly what was delivered, so you could have lost one of your recliners.

I list the names, numbers and emails of the executives at La-ZBoy on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. I see that you started contacting them every week after the missed delivery date to remind them of their failure.

By 1929, many New Yorkers rich with stock market money could afford the very expensive Model J. But as the Depression deepened it was the wealthy stars of Hollywood that kept the car’s label alive through much of the 1930s.

The car was so reputed and imposing many Hollywood stars, such as James Cagney, posed next to the car to promote their careers.

By 1937 the market for expensive cars, which had been severely hampered by the Great Depression, Duesenberg manufacturing came to an end. But, as the saying goes, while they were with us, “those automobiles were “Real Doozies!”

Duesenberg ceased official production in 1937 after Cord’s financial empire collapsed. Between 1938 and 1940, the last two “true” Duesenbergs made were assembled from leftover parts.

Duesenberg became far less popular during World War II, by the end of which a few Model J’s were advertised for around a mere $300 to $400, with some ultimately selling for only $100 or $200. Business rebounded in the 1950s, when classic and vintage cars became popular among collectors. Several Model J series were advertised in the New York Times in the fall of 1950, at prices as low as $500. By 1959 a decent example could not be bought for less than $4,000, and a few could reach a selling price of $10,000. By 1969, the remaining Model Js were selling between $15,000 and $50,000. In April 1974, the first Duesenberg to break six figures was a Model J selling for $205,000. The first Duesenberg to sell for more than $1 million was in 1985. Today, an authentic Model J will sell for anywhere from mid-six figures to well into seven figures. Since the turn of the 21st century, a least one sold for $10 million.

A few reproduction models were produced between 1978 and 2000 by the Elite Heritage Motors of Elroy, Wisconsin. The five body designs of the original Model J were offered, each copied from an original, looking almost identical. These replicas sold for up to $225,000, but less than 100 were manufactured because a ‘Real Doozie’ hasn’t been made since 1940.
