1. WHICH STATEMENT BELOW IS TRUE?
A. More billionaires live in San Diego than anywhere in America.
B. San Diego has more (retired) movie stars than Hollywood & New York combined.
C. Reno, Nevada is farther west than San Diego.
The correct answer is actually “C.”
Reno, Nevada is actually farther west than San Diego!
Reno is also farther west than Los Angeles, and -- even farther west than many central California coastal cities such as Santa Barbara!
In technical parlance, on the geographical grid, Los Angeles runs along the longitude of 118 degrees and 14 minutes west, while Reno, Nevada runs along the longitude of 119 degrees and 49 minutes farther west!

We tend to forget that the elongated shape of California is like a long, lazy “L.” San Diego and some other major California cities are at the bottom of the “L” shape “boot” of California -- while Reno, Nevada is nestled closer west, hugging the top part of California.
Don’t feel bad about missing this first question because even college professors and geographers are caught off-guard with this truly shocking trivial fact!
2. WHICH CALIFORNIA STATEMENT BELOW IS TRUE?
A. A native California scuba diver survived 3 days inside a whale.
B. A native Californian was on the cover of Time Magazine 55 times.
C. A native California resident is a first-cousin of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mildred, the church gossip, and self-appointed Monitor of the church’s morals, kept sticking her nose into other people’s business.
Several members did not approve of her extracurricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.
She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town’s only bar one afternoon.
She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that everyone seeing it there WOULD KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING!
Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned

The person was Richard Milhous Nixon, the only U.S. President who was a native Californian -and who actually appeared on the cover of Time Magazine an astounding 55 times across four different decades!
3. WHICH SHOCKING CALIFORNIA TRIVIA BELOW IS TRUE?
A. In Los Angeles the winner of the 1967 Miss California Pageant was revealed to be a man.
B. In Sunol, California a dog was elected Honorary Mayor of the city and became world famous.
C. A Ramona, California pack mule trained by U.S. Marines Corps to retrieve WWII U.S. casualties was promoted to rank of Colonel.
Correct answer, unbelievably, is “B.” In the city of Sunol, California a dog was actually elected Honorary Mayor of the city and served 13 years on the City Counsel Board from 1981 to 1994.
The story “grew legs” (in newspaper parlance) and California’s most unbelievable true story became famous around the entire

world! The celebrity canine politician was a black Labrador Retriever and Rottweiler mix by the name of Bosco Ramos.
The first time Bosco was elected into office was when he soundly defeated two articulate human beings in 1981 who vigorously challenged his serious credentials. The sensational story became too big for Sunol, California and became front page international news around the planet!
In 1984, Mayor Bosco Ramos achieved international fame when the British tabloid called The Daily Star covered his election appearances and ongoing election results!
British newspapers called the California city of Sunol:”The Wackiest Towne in the Entire World!”
But the British and their European neighbours openly cheered the dog onward and “celebrated him” with great fanfare from abroad.
Known affectionately as simply “Bosco,” the mayoral dog appeared with his owner, Tom Stillman, as a contestant on the game show called “3rd Degree” where the panelists failed toguess Bosco Ramos’ occupation!

How could anyone on the panel have guessed correctly? Let alone, even have imagined, that Bosco was Honorary Mayor of a California city?
Normally, as an “isolationist” nation, even Communist China finally found it impossible to ignore California’s most unique 4-legged city mayor with the wet nose and wagging tail.
In 1990, China’s official newspaper, the “People’s Daily,” reported Bosco’s tenure, of which he served until his death in 1994.
A statue of the four-legged Honorary Mayor, Bosco Ramos, was suitably erected in front of the towne Post Office in 2008, where visitors can view him today.
Truly an international star and symbol, the statue of the black Labrador and Rottweiler mix dog was designed by the celebrated Russian sculptor, Lena Toritch. To this day, in July of 2024, his California statue continues to draw many admirers from around the world!

A. Early California once belonged to Canada.
B. California was once an independent country.
C. The (average) height of California men are the tallest in the nation.
Unbelievable as it may sound, the shocking but correct answer is “B.”
Following the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, California existed as an independent nation – for 25 days, during which time it was known as the “Independent California Republic.”
Fact is often truly, truly stranger than fiction!
5. WHICH CALIFORNIA TRIVIA IS TRUE?
A. California created the world’s first internet.
B. California created the world’s first modern bank.
C. California created the world’s first artificial heart.
Correct answer is “A.”
Just think, the global internet from China to Russia to Europe, well, the world’s internet as we humans know it today – all began right here, in our own golden state of California!
This truly global, historic event was begat in Southern California where UCLA is officially called “The Birthplace of the Internet.”
Fascinating Backstory. Understandably, it is impossible to credit the invention of the internet to a single person simply because there were dozens of independent pioneering scientists, programmers, and engineers who (each developed) new technologies.
From as far back as Nikola Tesla, who toyed with the idea of a “world wireless system” in the early 1900s, as well as other visionary thinkers such as Paul Otlet, Vannevar Bush, et al in the 1930s and 1940s – all of these ideas morphed onward towards the internet schematics of the early 1960s.
First Workable Prototype. The fruition of all these ideas finally became reality with the (first workable prototype) of the Internet in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), which was funded by the U. S. Department of Defense.
In technical language: ARPANET used packet switching to allow
multiple computers to communicate on a single network.
What Was the First Historic Internet Message? On 29 October 1969, in room 3420 at Boelter Hall on the south campus of UCLA, a team of students led by Leonard Kleinrock (distinguished professor of science) “sent the first message over the Arpanet.”
What was that first historic message?
The first message said “Lo.”
It was meant to say “Login” . . . so the system crashed!
Things were rectified and the realisation of all the previous “ideas” down through the years had now become a “workable reality” and, thus, “officially” ushered the world through the doorway marked “Information Superhighway” as we know it today.
California not only changed the world, it changed human behaviour, and made it ‘impossible’ for us to think of life without our business and home computers: our window to the world!
That Historic Internet Room 3420 is Preserved Today. Today, Boelter Hall room 3420 is preserved for posterity, and for historians and public visitors to see the very birthplace “celebrating the world’s first transmission that led to the internet which affects everyone’s life around the planet today.”
Note: One of the most prestigious and award-winning places to learn and seek advice for purchasing a personal or business computer (of an kind) is at The Computer Factory, located right here in San Marcos, California, which is owned and run by Paul and Nome Van Middlesworth.
Owners Paul and Nome are preeminent in their field and consistently Voted No. 1 by various newspaper and public opinion polls.
Their secret to success? Lower, competitive pricing for high quality computer needs and service is what drives their reputation and makes their North San Diego County business truly legendary.
6. WHICH BIZARRE CALIFORNIA STATEMENT BELOW IS TRUE?
A. Some California mountains have naturally pink snow.
B. Some snowy California mountains have polar bears.
C. Some northern California mountains in Eureka are owned by the Canadian government.

Burglars on U.S. Visa Waivers Sentenced in Carlsbad
Theft Case
“Burglary Tourism” Exploding Across the Country
San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan announced today that three defendants who burglarized a home in Carlsbad in January, were sentenced prison terms between four and six years. The group is part of a foreign traveling crew using the Visa Waiver Program to get into the country to commit ‘burglary tourism,’ which has exploded in prevalence across the country.
Christian Tapia, 39 and Romai Aranedapogge, 36 each received a six-year prison sentence and Joe Acevedo, 20, was sentenced to four years. All three pleaded guilty on June 4 to conspiracy to commit burglary, residential burglary, identity theft and resisting arrest.
“These criminals not only stole cash and valuables from the victims, but they also stole the community’s peace of mind,” DA Stephan said. “The message is clear: If organized criminal burglary rings come to San Diego County to commit crime, they will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
On January 25, Carlsbad Police officers responded to a residence in a neighborhood that just months before was the subject to several residential burglaries. Once at the residence, police identified a suspect vehicle with stolen plates. When police secured the perimeter, the three defendants ran from the home into neighboring yards. When the defendants were caught and upon further

investigation, police found that the defendants were wanted in Illinois and in Colorado for similar crimes.
The defendants are from Chile and Italy, and they largely follow the prototype of the South American Theft Group, believed to be responsible for 100 burglaries across San Diego County.
Police investigations have found the suspect group to be made up of mostly Chilean men between 18-55. It has been determined that those involved in the theft group travel to the U.S. through the ESTA Visa Waiver program. This program allows people from Chile fill out an online questionnaire with no foreign background checks and receive a 90-day tourist visa. Most of the defendants involved in theft cases in the U.S. also have a criminal record in Chile.
Once in the country, the suspects obtain false foreign driver’s license and IDs and use the fake identities to rent the vehicles. The burglary team members will all have what is considered a work phone which most often is a pre-paid cellular phone. The suspects change the phone and or SIM card every 30 days or sooner.
The residential burglaries have similar circumstances. The homes were wealthy neighborhoods where houses backed up open space, a golf course, hiking trail or horse trail. On many homes, entry was made via a second story balcony.
Not old . . . but riddled with cancer. You’d never know she was terminal from talking to her. She looked good, carried on a great conversation, and was fun to be with . . . yet she, and we, all knew the doctors had given her, maybe, two more months . . and that was a month and a half ago. Though we knew it was coming it was still a painful shock to learn that she passed this last week.
I had coffee with my dear friend, retired Pastor Dick Huls, this past Saturday and we discussed how we were troubled by watching our contemporaries leave us. “Memories,” Dick said. “We have memories to comfort us.” And he’s right.
I still remember, with great affection, the late Arie De Jong. Arie left us this past year . . . and there’ll never be another like him - but he sure gave us all wonderful memories. He accomplished a great deal, became brilliantly successful as a businessman and was part of a very cohesive and loving De Jong family.
“This case is part of a crime spree that has plagued our nation where organized criminal rings, often with criminal records in their own country, are given a visa to the United States that they use to commit burglary tourism,” DA Stephan said. “I’m proud of the Carlsbad Police department investigation and of our prosecution team for their continued work on taking down these roving theft networks that eat away at the safety and security of residential neighborhoods.”

You fail to mention Kid Rock instigating the Dylan Mulvaney Bud Light promotion (which DID NOT GO PUBLIC) by machine gunning twelve packs of the swill and ranting his hate. He’s a poor shot, but more grave is his act fueled the boycott fire, and because of his act, the LGBTQ community continue to be victims of assault from others beneath a scope of humanity, AND legislation in several states to basically make it almost criminal to be LGBTQ.

I just learned this morning of another old school chum of mine who has passed. Fascinating life. He led Safari’s in Africa and other exotic locations around the globe. He had a good, happy life . . . and I’m sorry to learn of his passing.
I remember when my dad passed away, one week shy of his 92nd birthday. Naturally, I was saddened to have lost him . . . but I did not cry. Dad was ready to go. He had medical issues that made quality of life not all that pleasant. Still, it’s always an unpleasant task . . .saying goodbye to someone you care about.
Dick told me he’d be writing about the importance of memories in this week’s column of “The Pastor Says . . .” and here I am, writing about the same subject.
In addition to family and friends passing on, it’s also painful to see folks you care about with ailments and/or injuries that cause them pain . . . and you have such a feeling of
helplessness as there is nothing you can do to relieve or even ease their pain. I have a cousin, my closest friend, who has had sciatica and other pain problems for the past 10 years. Medicine, with all its advances over the years have not been able to give him relief from pain. And I feel helpless.

All statements above seem impossible, but, the correct one is “A,” some California mountains have naturally pink snow!
Baffled onlookers refer to this phenomenon in nature in a variety of casual non-scientific terms, such as “watermelon snow” or “pink snow” or even “blood snow” to offer up just a few examples.
However, biologists explain that this natural pink snow is actually caused by a species of naturallyoccurring algae, scientifically known as “chlamydomonas nivalis.” Simply speaking, this type of algae releases a red pigment in cold and freezing conditions.
This type of snow phenomenon is common during the summer in alpine and coastal polar regions worldwide, such as in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains.
There, in California’s famous Sierra Nevada Mountains -- at altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet -the temperature is cold throughout the year, so the snow has lingered longer from winter storms.
Thus, walking on the snow or compressing it, such as when making snowballs, leaves it looking pink or red!

B. San Diego hosted a U.S. Olympic event.
C. San Francisco has the largest Chinese population outside of China.
If you missed this one, don’t pull your hair out by the roots, because you’re not alone.
Simply put, the correct answer is, shockingly “B” San Diego once hosted a U.S. Olympic event!
While the 1984 Summer Olympics was officially hosted by Los Angeles, not all events – as is often customary in past Games – are not always held within the locale of the official host city, itself (in this case not all official events were held in Los Angeles proper).
The 1984 Summer Olympic Equestrian Events included: Show Jumping, Dressage, and Endurance Jumping Eventing. San Diego County hosted the Olympic Gold Medals for the Endurance Jumping Event.
As explained by the International Olympic Committee: “The Equestrian Sports were held primarily at Santa Anita Racetrack, which offered stabling for up to 2100 horses, along with a grandstand with almost 16,000 seats, and which was managed by experienced horsemen.
“Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in San Diego County hosted the ‘Endurance Jumping Event’ portion of the three-day Equestrian events.”

8. HOW MANY ACTIVE & INACTIVE VOLCANOES DOES CALIFORNIA HAVE?
A. None B. 17 C. 29
The question alone is quite shocking, as most people don’t even think of volcanoes in California – much less any that are dangerously active.
Correct answer is C.
California has 29 volcanoes, which is the fourth most in the
United States and second most in the lower 48 states. Aside from volcanoes, California has over 500 volcanic vents, at least 76 of which have erupted.
California has every type of volcano, and some volcanoes have shown low levels of activity for centuries, such as hot springs, gas emissions, earthquakes, and ground deformation.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) monitors 16 California volcanoes that could become active again, and seven of those are considered to have a high to very high threat potential.
Those seven active California volcanoes are:
1. Medicine Lake Volcano
You can find the Medicine Lake Volcano in the northeastern part of California, about 30 miles northeast of Mount Shasta, which is another active volcano. The volcano has an elevation of 7,795 feet, and the lava inside is around 140 cubic miles in volume.
2. Mount Shasta Volcano
Mount Shasta is another ”potentially” active volcano situated at the southern end of the Cascade Range. You can say that Medicine Lake and Mount Shasta are neighbouring volcanoes, with an approximate elevation of 14,179 feet.
3. Lassen Volcanic Center

We have a new caregiver, April, for Mary and I don’t know how I’d survive without her.
She’s retired military (Army), has years of experience as a caregiver and she and my Mary have bonded. As luck would have it April is also a fantastic cook. When she learned I love soups she whipped up a beef stew that knocked our socks off (mine and Kenny’s). Later, when she learned I loved Pasta Fagiole (pasta fazool) she cooked up a batch . . . her spaghetti sauce is to die for - and she has a great sense of humor. She knows nutrition and sees to it that Mary (and me) eat only the proper foods. She always makes sure Mary has a bowl of soup and a sandwich for lunch and always prepares something for dinner as well.
She’s Mary’s caregiver but I get some collateral benefit (quite a bit, actually).

Beagle Freedom Project
Recently, at a ceremony in the Capitol, I was honored to recognize Shannon Keith, President and Founder of the Beagle Freedom Project, along with volunteer Melina Shirley, to recognize their tireless efforts to save the lives of countless dogs, cats and other animals in laboratories. This extraordinary organization is the world’s leading advocate for rescuing and rehoming animals used in experimental research.
Because of their gentle dispositions and submissive natures, nearly 96% of dogs used in research are beagles. In the US, more than 60,000 dogs and nearly 20,000 cats are being used for animal experimentation to test cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, household products and for other scientific curiosities. Unfortunately, many spend their entire lives in cages.
Since 2010, the Beagle Freedom Project has worked to end this abuse through education, advocacy and legislation. Their advocacy is vital, resulting in legislation such as Lennon’s Law, which phased out “Closed Colony” blood banks. These are places that keep dogs in cages for months or years
at a time, in order to bleed them for blood and blood components. Just this year, on Valentine’s Day, these efforts bore fruit when a major animal testing laboratory was shut down in Oklahoma.
As a dog owner and animal lover, I have long been interested in protecting/rescuing animals that have been used for research. Obviously, once these animals are no longer needed for this purpose, they should be released for adoption to loving homes whenever possible.
That’s why I co-authored the California Beagle Freedom Bill, sponsored by the Beagle Freedom Project, which ensured dogs and cats used for testing and experimentation get every opportunity to have a life after labs through adoption into loving homes. It’s hard to believe this legislation took two sessions to pass before becoming law in 2016.

Overbilled for my closet repair! Should I sign this release agreement?
Q: I recently found a contractor on Angi to fix my bedroom closet. I reached out to the recommended company, Beltway Builders, and they sent a man named Texas Greg to give me an estimate.
Texas Greg quoted me a crazy price of $1,350 for the job. When I asked why it was so expensive, he said it was the day rate for two handymen. I accepted it because my wife was freaking out that her clothes were all over the floor.
Only one person showed up for the job. He took four hours to finish. I complained to Beltway and told Texas Greg that I should get a $500 refund for getting only four hours of labor while being charged for 16 hours. Texas Greg said I was wrong and that they undercharged me. He said my bill should have been $1,650.
Shortly after the work was finished, the shelves in the closet collapsed. This time, I fixed it myself. They offered me a $100 gift card to Outback Steakhouse and made
me sign a nondisclosure agreement that I couldn’t disparage them or their work any further.
I would like a refund for the second repairman who did not show up. Can you help me?
~ Laurence Bauman, Pikesville, MD
A: A contractor should do a competent job at a fair rate. So much went wrong with your experience, I don’t even know where to begin.
When you research a contractor, you can certainly use Angi as a resource. But you don’t want to rely on it exclusively. Ask around and get a good word-of-mouth recommendation from a friend or relative.
Also, if someone quotes you a rate that’s too high, you’re under no obligation to say “yes.” (As it turned out, you finally decided to install the shelves yourself for free.) I realize your wife was upset about the closet, and you needed to get the job done quickly. But you didn’t have to go with the
Texas Greg estimate.
Texas Greg really gave you a Texas-sized estimate for the closets. I might have requested several estimates for the job.
I see from your correspondence with Beltway Builders that there was some additional communication with the company and that you involved the BBB. That probably irritated the company, leading it to send you the gift card offer with the nondisclosure agreement.
A nondisclosure agreement is a legally binding contract that prevents you from revealing certain things about a business relationship -- in your case, it would be anything relating to the job Texas Greg had quoted you. It would include your comments on the closets and the images of the collapsed closet that you sent me with your complaint.
Again, though, no one was forcing you to sign the contract. You can walk away from a nondisclosure agreement and do whatever you
want, including complaining to a nationally syndicated consumer advocate.
I reviewed the job, and I don’t think you should have had to pay $1,350. I would have asked another contractor for an estimate or just fixed the closet myself.
I contacted Beltway Builders on your behalf to see if I could negotiate a truce. A manager called and apologized. He said both of the people involved in your repair have left the company. And he agreed to refund you the $500.
As for the nondisclosure? Well, the $100 gift card turned out to be worth $50, so I would say your agreement is probably voided.

On July 4, 1776, some 248 years ago, Thomas Jefferson formally put down in writing a declaration addressed to Britain’s King George III stating our independence and freedom from his colonial domination. John Adams and Benjamin Franklin were on the congressional committee to draft the “Declaration,” but most of the enduring verbiage is Jefferson’s. His key argument for independence: no person or group should be taxed without representation. The American colonies were being heavily taxed by Great Britain and no English colonist had any input to Parliament or to the Crown.
Every American and those wanting to be a citizen of this country should know that Jefferson single-handedly contributed more to the building of our nation than any other person. Yet he certainly had his flaws. He was a slave owner among other things and

Jefferson was born April 13, 1743. He became a statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. Jefferson more than doubled the geographic size of the nation with the 1803, Louisiana Purchase from France for the paltry sum of 3 cents an acre. Such a deal has never been seen or made since … not even the 1867, purchase of Alaska from Russia.
Following the American Revolutionary War and prior to becoming president in 1801, Jefferson was the nation’s first U.S. secretary of state under George Washington and then the nation’s second vice president under John Adams. Jefferson was a leading proponent of democracy, republicanism, and individual rights, and produced formative documents and decisions at the state, national, and international levels. I tried to cancel my Aerolíneas Argentinas ticket. Can you find my refund?
When Aerolíneas Argentinas changes Christina Skinner’s flight schedule by nine hours, she asks the carrier to cancel her ticket and issue a refund. Its response: silence. What should she do?
Q: I’m having a problem with a flight refund and need your help. I recently booked a round-trip flight on Aerolíneas Argentinas from Miami to Buenos Aires. The flight was supposed to depart at 5:15 p.m. I received an email from the airline two months before my departure advising me that the flight was now going to depart at 8:05 a.m. the same day.
This was not going to work for me because I was flying from my hometown of Atlanta to Miami earlier that day.
I tried calling Aerolíneas Argentinas’ toll-free number six times. Each time, there was no answer -the call was just dropped.
I went on the airline website and completed the cancellation request. I received an automated acknowledgment and case number. I have not heard from the airline since then.
I sent two successive emails to the airline, and I have tried communicating with it on WhatsApp, but it has not responded.
I would like Aerolíneas Argentinas to cancel the reservation and issue a full refund. Can you help me get my $571 back? -- Christina Skinner, Lawrenceville, Ga.
A: Aerolíneas Argentinas should have sent you a refund within a week. That’s not just my opinion, it’s a government requirement. If you pay by credit card, the Department of Transportation gives the airline 7 days; if it’s by cash or check, the airline has 20 days.
Why didn’t it? Well, no air-
line wants to refund a ticket, so Aerolíneas Argentinas is hardly alone. I’ve seen them hem and haw and try to push passengers to take a different flight. But this was a significant schedule change, which means you can ask for a refund.
The other issue is that your ticket change happened during a turbulent time for Argentina. It was in the middle of an election, and Aerolíneas Argentinas has almost certainly been affected since it is the state-owned flag carrier.
But I don’t want to make any excuses for the airline. It should have refunded you promptly. Interestingly, this was a direct booking, so there was no online travel agency involved. You did an excellent job of keeping a paper trail between you and the airline, although it was mostly emails to the airline with no response.
You might have tried escalating
this to one of the executives whose names I publish on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. But given all that was going on at the time, I’m not sure if they would have responded.
I contacted Aerolíneas Argentinas on your behalf. A few weeks later, you sent me an update.
“I wanted to provide the happy news that Aerolíneas Argentinas has responded and as of today, has fully refunded my airfare to my American Express account,” you wrote. “Thank you so much for your assistance in contacting them and spurring them into action!”

These tourists don’t want anyone to know they’re American. Here’s Why
Shirley Barchi doesn’t want anyone to know she’s American when she travels abroad.
“The loudest voices are almost always Americans,” she complains. “They don’t respect the culture and language of the country I’m visiting. And they’re often rude if a server or clerk doesn’t speak English.”
So Barchi, like a lot of other welltraveled Americans, is distancing herself from her countrymen.
“There’s no need to associate myself with them,” says Barchi, a retired IT professional from Clermont, Fla.
Barchi avoids large groups of her compatriots and tries to blend in with other guests. And when someone asks where she’s from, she hesitates to answer, preferring to change the subject. But some visitors are going a step further.
Being Culturally Sensitive Isn’t Always Easy
There have always been travelers who have downplayed their nationality. That trend has accelerated this summer with a divisive U.S. election looming and some
unpopular foreign policy decisions made by the U.S. government. Often, Americans are also targeted when they’re abroad.
But there’s something else driving it, and that is the American visitors themselves. Increasingly, it feels as if they forgot to pack
their manners.
“In this era of social media and Instagrammable travel experiences, there’s been a rise in prioritizing personal gratification and comfort over full cultural immersion when traveling,” says Claire Law, a psychotherapist from Preston,
England, who has studied travel behavior. “With that mentality, it’s perhaps unsurprising that problematic behavior is becoming more commonplace.”
Law says the underlying causes behind abrasive behavior are complicated and culturally rooted. For example, while assertiveness may be an important quality for Americans, it may be frowned upon in Asia. That doesn’t necessarily mean Americans are rude. They’re acting as they normally would instead of adapting to the culture of the country they’re visiting.
I travel 365 days a year, almost exclusively outside the United States. I’ve seen other Americans act abrasively so often lately that it surprises me when they behave respectfully. There’s a whole suite of Americanisms that rubs people the wrong way, from the volume (loud) to the way we dress (logoed T-shirts and sneakers) to the to the seemingly polite phrases that somehow come off as phony. (You know, “please,” “thank you” and “I really appreciate it.”)
I love being American, but sometimes I don’t love being around

Americans when I travel. And I’m not alone.
How Travelers Are Distancing Themselves From American Tourists
Here are some of the ways American travelers are keeping a polite distance from the rest of the group:
Change Of Clothes
If you don’t want anyone to think you’re American, you have to dress the part. “I don’t believe in dressing in T-shirts and cutoffs or jeans when I travel abroad,” says Gloria Howard, a retired credit manager from Waterloo, Ill. “I try to always look well-kept and dressed according to the venue I will be attending.” No logoed shirts, no baseball caps worn backward. All those things identify you as an American tourist.
No Sneakers
How do people spot an American abroad? “Our shoes are a giveaway,” says Thomas Plante, a psychology professor who has studied visitor behavior. U.S. guests love to wear designer sneakers, which are uncommon in other parts of the world. When Plante doesn’t want anyone to
know he’s an American, he switches his footwear. When he was in Hungary a few years ago, he even bought an inexpensive pair of casual shoes to look like he belonged.
Turn Down The Volume
It’s true, compared to many other countries, Americans are a little louder. But it doesn’t have to be that way. “Don’t talk loudly with one another or on speaker phones,” says Barry Maher, a professional speaker based in Santa Barbara Calif. “Have a little awareness of your surroundings.” If you did, you might notice that no one else is yelling into their phones -- or at each other. Or that doing so immediately identifies you as an American visitor.
Mind Your Manners
Often, it’s just a matter of brushing up on your etiquette. “I see Americans who are loud, rude, and entitled when I’m abroad,” says Sergio Diaz, a talent agent who frequently travels internationally. “Many Americans think they are the center of the world and then act that way,” he says. Diaz believes this behavior has gotten worse during an election year. He says he recoils when he sees MAGA caps and Tshirts because of the behavior it often brings with it.
American tourists do one more thing that immediately identifies
them as U.S. tourists. They tip, even when it’s not the local custom. And it’s often done very publicly, with bills being parceled out to a bellman or server for the whole world to see. Some feel this public kind of payment offensive.
No wonder then that some visitors are taking an extra step away from the other Americans by denying their nationality.
Ross Copas, a retired electrician from Tweed, Canada, was traveling with some American friends in Europe when a restaurant server asked where they were from.
“Ontario, Canada,” said Copas, while the Americans remained silent.
Copas had a good laugh. Canadian tourists have a reputation for being polite and a little quieter than the Americans, so the good will benefitted his travel companions.
I asked Copas how he would feel about Americans who wear a Canadian flag pin, leaving others with the impression they’re Canadian when they are not. He says he has mixed feelings about that.
“I guess it’s OK,” he says, “as long as you act the part.”
Why You Should Keep Your Nationality To Yourself
Has it gotten so bad that you have to dress down, shut up and lie about your nationality?
Look around. Anti-American sentiment is not difficult to find when you’re abroad. It’s probably not your fault. If you’re reading this story, chances are you’re not in charge of setting U.S. foreign policy. But still. People think of you as an ambassador for your country. If you don’t want to be a target for anti-American sentiment, you’ll want to blend in.
“It’s always best to maintain a low profile when you’re traveling overseas,” says Bob Bacheler, a frequent international traveler who runs a medical transportation service.
In other words, you can lose sneakers and hoodie, turn down the volume and be respectful and still be proud of your nationality. I am.

Pastor Huls
The Pastor Says . . .
An author, Ellen Wilcox, whom I enjoy, writes a poem on solitude, and I paraphrase, “Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Cry, and you cry alone.” I was reminded of this recently when visiting a long-time friend who never seems to smile. There have been some difficulties in this person’s life, which might be the reason for not smiling. It was the complaint that intrigued me when this friend said, “No one wants to visit with me.” Indeed, it was the fulfillment of the poem, “Cry and you cry alone.”
There is, of course, cause for crying. I have had to cry a lot. I was always grateful when others accepted that. Tragedy, failure, rejection, and loss can be causes for crying. In Eccl., a Bible book, there is the statement, which is right, “There is a time to weep.” Sometimes, we must weep; denying one permission will create emotional problems. However, in the related passage, the Bible says, “There is a time to laugh,” which means we must get beyond our sorrow and smile and laugh.
Smiling is therapeutic, i.e., healing. Studies show that it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown. To live in a world that provokes crying is to create a mental illness of depression, negativity, and despair. Tragedy, failure, rejection, loss, and several other things can provoke crying. Even though Jesus’ world, not unlike ours, was cruel, unjust, and ruthless, He never said we must cry. If we did, it was because of injustice. Instead, he offered hope in God’s presence and love. One finds that in the call to serve others, i.e., get out of oneself and bring the kingdom of God, which is love, joy, and peace, into the lives of others. When these were shared, the people rejoiced. There were no limitations to the laughter and smiles at the wedding at Cana of Galilee.
The world, our homes, our communities, and all humanity need a smile. As church community members, we have God’s promises of blessing, forgiveness, and care. So why shouldn’t we smile? Our churches should be filled with smiling people radiating the joy of our faith. When we consider our blessings, if we smile, the world will smile with us.
If smiling is difficult, practice it despite your feelings and circumstances. There is always something to smile about, even if it’s just to get someone in your world to smile with you. Start small, find a reason to smile daily, and watch as it becomes easier and more natural.

The combination of AI (artificial intelligence) with the broadband interlinked data bases of the WWW (World Wide Web) created the IW (intelligent web) in 2001. Smart phones arrived in 2007 providing 7/24 mobile access to the IW. Until the arrival of the IW, we humans were limited by the amount of information held in memory and the quality of our internal reasoning power. The IW marks the beginning of a process that changed everything. We no longer suffer the limits of our memory and mental powers. IW based AI can apply its reasoning power to man’s entire store of knowledge. The IW can provide a solution in less time than it takes a thoughtful man to stroke his chin.
For several weeks my friend Nina Thompson at San Diego Humane Society and I warned pet owners to make sure their pets were safe on the 4th of July. That’s NOT the time to let pets discover their independence.
I got a lot of smirks from people thinking, “You idiot. Everybody knows that! You’re preaching to the choir.”
As I’m writing this Critter Corner, I’m following Nina’s internet posts. On the morning of July 5th, she reported dozens of lost / found dogs and cats that had either been brought to San Diego Humane So-
Folks with lifelong exposure to the IW through smart phones, tablets, and other devices are known as DNs or digital natives. Today that group is mostly comprised of people twenty-five and younger. They seamlessly integrate the assets of the IW as an adjunct to their own internal memory and reasoning power. The DNs spend approximately half their waking hours (7-8 hrs/day) connected to the IW. Their socialization and learning environment is quite different from that of we DIs or digital immigrants who were born before 1990 and grew to adulthood prior to the existence of the IW.
We DIs are a little over half the US population and are a diverse group. Our tenuous link is that we all became adults before there was general access to the IW. That means the IW and its AI had little or no impact on our learning process. We formed our opinions, biases, morality and world view through direct interaction with our environment and others. Most of us view the Internet as a terrific external resource. We understand and appreciate the availability of the Internet’s world wide data base and the convenience of AI to help us process it.
We primarily rely on our internal cognitive powers and established knowledge base to evaluate the alternatives offered by AI. This is a fundamental difference in the way DIs and DNs reach conclusions.
Brave New World
DNs have not established an extensive cognition based on life experience. By contrast, DIs have real world experience as their “go to”.
Our customers and The Paper readers are overwhelmingly DIs. Some scorn the IW as a source of evil and a tool of the Devil. Others use the IW sparingly out of fear that “big brother” may be listening in or some cyber-crook is waiting to empty their bank account and destroy their computer. But the majority of DIs use the IW every day for work, play, shopping, travel, banking, staying in contact with friends and family and a hundred other things.
Whether you view the IW as evil, scary or a great asset we can help you to better understand the risks and benefits of getting and stay-
ing connected. We can help you select, upgrade, enhance or adapt the hardware, operating system and applications that best fit your needs. The three components needed to fully enjoy the savings, information and convenience of your IW connection are your (1) smart phone, (2) PC and (3) a Digital Assistant (smart speakers).
Nome and I have been in the computer business since the 1960s. We opened The Computer Factory in 1995 and both of us have put 80 years in our rear view mirror. We’re in this business because we want everyone to know that an IW connection can help folks grow, learn and keep mentally sharp throughout their entire lives. Helping to spread that knowledge is our job and we love doing it. You have “friends in the business”.
ciety shelters or picked up by officers.
Some were reclaimed within a few hours thanks to the contact information on the tags on their collars and microchips. After working in shelters for 25 years, I can tell you that reuniting a pet and owner is one of the best feelings ever!
By midday, Nina was reporting more than 80 rescues. Around 3:00 in the afternoon the number passed 100 and it was still growing. More of the lost and found pets would be reclaimed by owners in the coming days. But there would continue to be new arrivals.
Most owners know that their pets are terrified by fireworks and they’re going to hide in the closet. When they don’t see them after a few days, they realize that Fluffy or Fido is gone.
This year the 4th started a long holiday weekend. They didn’t no-
tice until Monday that they were missing a pet or two or three.
Let’s go over this again.
• If you find a lost pet, get it into a contained area then call the organization that handles animal control for your area.
• If it has a collar and you can safely approach it, see if it has contact information for the owner.
• If you lost your pet, contact nearby shelters to see if they have it. File a report so they can call you if your pet ends up there.
• Post your contact information with a picture of your pet on social media. If the picture shows you and your pet together, that’s even better.
• If you posted signs about your lost pet, take them down when you get your pet back.

nic Center in Lassen Volcanic National Park, which is about 55 miles east of Redding. Hundreds of explosive eruptions happened within 850,000 years due to the vents spread over 200 miles. The volcano has a high elevation, making it a great tourist attraction. The area around the Lassen Volcanic Center has had fifty non-explosive eruptions
4. Clear Lake Volcanic Field
The fourth active volcano on this list is the Clear Lake Volcanic Field. It is set about 90 miles north of San Francisco, precisely beside Clear Lake in California’s northern Coast Ranges. It also has an elevation of 1,439, making it the volcano with the lowest elevation out of the other three mentioned above. While it has been dormant for several millennia, seismologists managed to detect sporadic earthquakes due to the volcano. They also found numerous volcanic gas and hot springs located within the area, giving seismologists the conclusion that it may erupt again.
5. Long Valley Volcanic Region
What’s worse than an area having one volcano? Two volcanoes! When you visit the Long Valley Volcanic Region, you can spot both the Long Valley Caldera and the Mono-Inyo Craters that form a large volcanic complex around eastern California. It was also the cause of considerable earthquake activity and ground uplift in the last decades.
6. Coso Volcanic Field
If you like looking at hot springs, you should check out the Coso Volcanic Field located about 100 miles northeast of Bakersfield, California, within the boundary of the Naval Air Weapons Station, at China Lake.
It also produced red hills of volcanic cinder, a field of steep-sided lava domes, and rough-surfaced lava flows. Seismologists also recorded small to moderate earthquakes because of the geothermal resource.
7. Salton Buttes
Finally, you have the seventh active volcano, or volcanoes, which is the Salton Buttes. It is a series of volcanoes on the Salton Sea in California. The Salton Buttes have a 4.3 mile-long row of five lava domes. There isn’t enough available data for seismologists to figure out the volcanic activity’s pattern, but there’s still a possibility of future eruptions.
While volcanoes are fascinating to learn about, the hazards they pose are a part of life for many Californians. Seismologists have found that there are at least seven active
volcanoes around California. They may not physically show signs of activity, but that’s typical for volcanoes.
California is the most geologically diverse state in the nation. We are known for our earthquakes, landslides, flood hazards . . . and now, active volcanoes -- which the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reminds us: “Seven of which are considered to have a high to very high threat potential!”
And as Dr. John Parrish, the State Geologist of California says: “But our nearly forgotten hazard is our volcanoes!”
More than 500 volcanic vents have been identified in the State of California. At least 76 of these vents have erupted, some repeatedly, during the last 10,000 years. Sooner or later, volcanoes in California will erupt again, and they could have serious impacts on our health and safety.

ington then appointed Jefferson the nation’s first secretary of state, where he served from 1790 to 1793. During this time, in the early 1790s, Jefferson and James Madison organized the Democratic-Republican Party to oppose the Federalist Party during the formation of the nation’s First Party System. Jefferson and Federalist John Adams became both friends and political rivals. In the 1796 U.S. presidential election between the two, Jefferson came in second, which made him Adams’ vice president under the electoral laws of the time. Four years later, in the 1800 presidential election, Jefferson again challenged Adams, and Aaron Burr, that time winning the presidency. In 1804, Jefferson was re-elected overwhelmingly to a second term.
As president, Jefferson assertively defended the nation’s shipping and trade interests against Barbary pirates and aggressive British trade policies, promoted a western expansionist policy with the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the nation’s geographic size, and was able to reduce military forces and expenditures following successful negotiations with France. In his second presidential term, Jefferson was beset by difficulties at home, including the trial of his former vice president Aaron Burr. In 1807, Jefferson implemented the Embargo Act to defend the nation’s industries from British threats to U.S. shipping, limiting foreign trade and stimulating the birth of the American manufacturing industry.
Presidential scholars and historians praise Jefferson’s public achievements, including his advocacy of religious freedom and tolerance, his peaceful acquisition of the Louisiana Territory from France, and his leadership in supporting the Lewis and Clark Expedition; they give radically differing interpretations of his views on and relationship with slavery.
Today Thomas Jefferson is ranked by both scholars and in public opinion among the upper-tier of the 46 American presidents. If you’re looking for intrigue and dirty political tricks, read the presidential election account of 1800 between Jefferson, President John Adams, and Vice President Aaron Burr. Surprisingly, Hollywood has yet to explore that chapter of our history. It’s an episode that makes our present-day presidential race look like child’s play.
The final bit of irony to Jefferson’s historic life: He died on July 4, 1826, within hours of old friend and rival John Adams. It was the 50th anniversary of our “Declaration of Independence.”

The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a time, someone asked, ‘How much will a brain cost?’
The doctor quickly responded, “$5,000 for a Democrat’s brain and $200 for a Republican’s.”
The moment turned awkward.
MIGHTY MOJO
Some of the Democrat relatives actually had to ‘try’ to not smile, avoiding eye contact with the Republican relatives.
One man, unable to control his curiosity, finally blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, “Why is the Democrat’s brain so much more than a Republican’s brain?”
The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, “It’s just a standard pricing procedure. We have to price the Republican’s brains a lot lower because – they’re used.” ***
“Thanks for the harmonica you gave me for Christmas,” little Joshua said to his uncle the first time he saw him after the holidays. “It’s the best present I ever got.”
“That’s great,” said his uncle. “Do you know how to play it?”
“Oh, I don’t play it,” the little fellow said. “My mom gives me a dollar a day not to play it during the day and my dad gives me five dollars a week not to play it at night.
Men Are Just Happier People!
What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a
water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park.
Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don’t have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress$5,000. Tux rental - $100. People never stare at your chest when you’re talking to them. New shoes don’t cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks.
A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a threepack. Two pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck.
You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoesone color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can ‘do’ your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache... You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on De-
cember 24 in 25 minutes.
No wonder men are happier!

EATING OUT
When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave and John will each throw in $20, even though it’s only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back.
When the girls get their bill, outcome the pocket calculators.

County men’s a cappella chorus that performs four-part, close harmony songs arranged in Barbershop style, known for its “ringing”chords. We are affiliated with the non-profit International Barbershop Harmony Society, which is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of this style of singing.
We are recruiting men, middle school age and older, who enjoy singing, who are curious about singing a cappella music, and who would enjoy the camaraderie of likeminded men working to achieve beautiful “ringing” chords. Previous musical experience is helpful, but is not a requirement. We can provide audio learning tracks to aid you in learning your part. And other members in your vocal part provide assistance as well.
We are looking for prospective singers for all vocal parts - Lead, Bass, Tenor, and Baritone.
We have open rehearsals on most Tuesday evenings from 7-9:30 pm at San Marcos Lutheran Church, 3419 Grand Avenue, in the Luther Hall.
For more information about singing with the Music Men, call Joe Pascucci at (760) 845-3593. Or visit our website, www.musicmenchorus.org.

First, I discovered America, then I discovered
The Paper
Ever since I can remember I’ve had the burning desire to discover new places, new adventures. Because of this, I set out to discover a new country . . . and I was successful. I even ventured inland a great many miles where I discovered a place I called Minnesota. “This,” I thought, “would be a great place for Scandinavians.” So I headed back to Norway to recruit settlers. While I was gone, some clown named Columbus claimed he discovered America. Life ain’t fair. Except life also give us The Paper. I read it whenever and wherever I go exploring and only buy from those who advertise in The Paper. It’s a Viking thing.
Your friend, Eric the Red
