By Friedrich Gomez All of us are fully aware of the post Second World War rush to grab German scientists (well known) as “Operation Paperclip” and how the U. S. savagely competed even with our erstwhile, trusted allies such as England, France, Russia, et al, to grab the best German scientists before they did!

However, what is not well known, is how America’s own CIA and FBI secretly collaborated to (success-

fully) overturn President Harry Truman’s Presidential Order.

In Operation Paperclip, which President Harry Truman authorised in August of 1945, Truman clearly ordered that anyone found: “To have been a member of the Nazi party and more than a nominal participant in its activities, or an active supporter of Nazi militarism” would be deprived of coming to American shores.

By the letter of the law, as decreed by President Truman himself, just about all of the top German scientists had Nazi party membership, ergo: none could be admitted to the U.S. So, what really happened behind the scenes, involving the rush for WWII German scientists? How did the CIA and FBI clandestinely change the laws and rule of thumb and even sabotage public protests and expunged official WWII records?

“IT WOULD BE NEAR SUICIDE TO ALLOW ADVERSARIES TO WIN THE RACE FOR TOP GERMAN SCIENTISTS.” Their achievements in warfare science was, literally, leaps and bounds ahead of us and our allies, before they were curtailed by war.

From the standards of that era, this is a most remarkable achievement in rocket science.

How truly important was the recruitment of German scientists?

TODAY’S RUSSIAN, CHINESE & U.S. SPACE PROGRAMMES BASED ON GERMAN WWII ROCKET SCIENCE. German rocket science was so advanced that it would eventually prove to be the initial blueprints for the Soviet Union and the United States in their race-to-space explorations.

MODERN ICBM MISSILE DEFENCE PROGRAMMES REST ON GERMAN MISSILE SCIENCE. The V-2 missiles would eventually prove be the precursors to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) of modern American, British, Chinese, French, and Russian armaments.

The sophistication of the German’s Third Reich V-2 rocket (Vergeltungswaffe-2) was almost science fiction brought to life.

resulted in the world’s first ballistic missile attacks when they rained down on London, England, in September of 1944. And these “vengeance weapons” from the skies were almost immune to enemy fire.

As one historian states, “It was virtually impossible to intercept.

Upon launch, it rose six miles vertically, cutting off its own fuel according to the range desired.”

Dr. Friedrich Kirchstein even developed the V-2 radio for motor cut-off. The deadly speed was 4,000 mph and range was an unbelievable 200 miles!

Our ‘secret governments,’ viz., our CIA and domestic FBI, would certainly “do whatever is necessary for the greater good of the people” which translates to “bleaching the records of these brilliant World War II scientists,” as is necessary, so as to preserve our military competitiveness with Russia and others.

Despite these thorny entanglements, when push came to shove, justice was placed on the shelf and all these brilliant scientists were cleared to work for the United States.

Dr. Wernher von Braun headed rocket science development that eventually terrorised London, and the entire country, killing over 2,700 civilians and injuring over 6,500. Von Braun would later testify to his American interrogators that his primary interest of rocketry was not to devastate but to develop man’s capability to travel into outer space. This caused Jewish comedian and satirist, Mort Sahl (1927-2021) to attribute his celebrated remark to Wernher von Braun, “I aim for the stars, but sometimes hit London.”

As stated in declassified files: “All of these men were cleared to work for the U.S. Their alleged crimes covered up and their backgrounds bleached. Winning the Cold War is the first priority over upholding justice.”

Nevertheless, such astonishing achievement in rocket warfare was of primary interest to the allies.

However, in all fairness, our U. S. files reveal these scientists were “forced” to join the Nazi regime (which is elaborated later in this report).

GERMAN SCIENTISTS.

A man boarded an airplane and took his seat.. As he settled in, he glanced up and saw the most beautiful woman boarding the plane.

He swallowed hard. Here was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen sitting next to him, and she was going to a meeting of nymphomaniacs.

In the ensuing years, when concerned efforts and protests by both the U. S. public and some politicians were made to identify and deport them, both the CIA and FBI blocked the investigations.

It was deemed a necessary step.

WAR & DURING THE “COLD WAR” ERA! Major-General Hugh Knerr, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Air Force in Europe, wrote of the urgency in trying to seize a scientific goldmine: “If we do not take the opportunity to seize the apparatus and the brains that developed it and put the combination back to work promptly, we will remain several years behind while we attempt to cover a field already exploited.”

In retrospect, it was vastly important if we were to survive the Cold War era.

What was discovered in schematic charts and diagrams was a science far beyond anything we, the Russians, or the British, were even close to imagining, let alone, in pursuit of.

U.S. Air Force Deputy Commander, Major-General Hugh Knerr wrote a shocking truth in a handwritten report, “Occupation of German scientific and industrial establishments has revealed the fact that we have been alarmingly backward in many fields of research.”

Especially in regards to the Russians, our U.S. Operations’ mission was (unofficial), but clear:

COULD OUR WORLD TODAY HAVE BEEN ALTERED IF WE FAILED TO CLAIM GERMAN SCIENTISTS? Would a parallel universe have taken shape, in a manner of speaking back then?

Just how much more advanced were the Third Reich German scientists?

Today, in 2023, let us glimpse what our military experts expressed in now-declassified shocking documents: “If these scientists were left alone without the intervention of war to interrupt their military work, the German war machine could have proven to be invincible.”

“Then, the Thousand-Year-Reich may have had its best chance for world domination. Especially in light of the fact that German scientists were on the fast track for nuclear weaponry.”

In December of 1938, two German chemists reported they had detected the element Barium after bombarding uranium with neutrons.

This effort was confirmed as being nuclear fission.

In April 1939, the Reich Ministry of War was informed of the potential military application of nuclear energy.

Germany’s V-2 rockets became the first artificial objects to cross the boundary of space with the vertical launch of V-177 on 20 June 1944. If war had not intervened, Germany’s missile advancements, increased range, and more powerful weapon delivery payloads were all probable.

GERMAN SCIENTISTS SPEARHEADED NASA IN PLACING FIRST HUMAN ON THE MOON! As science scholars relate, “The V-2 rocket also laid the foundation for the Saturn V rocket used by the United States in the Apollo missions, which eventually put Neil Armstrong, the first man, on the moon.”

Germany’s WWII scientist, Wernher von Braun, himself, headed our first man-on-the-moon project.

World War II German scientists were gifted beyond the standards

of their era. Such verbiage, however accurate, may seem awkward and uncomfortable regarding Deutsches Reich (the official name of Germany until 1945) and their world-domination plan.

In 2023, war historians still marvel at Hitler’s military machine which was still evolving before it was halted.

Also, experts in today’s aviation assert that stealth technology, which is designed to avoid radar detection, was first conceived and developed under Hitler’s regime.

Recently, the Horten Ho 229 has been called “Hitler’s Stealth Fighter,” even though there are those who critique this title. (The Paper, issue 7/14/22 deals with the Horten 229 and can be read online on our website.)

WERNHER VON BRAUN WANTED TO BE CAPTURED

BY U.S. & NOT RUSSIANS WHO HE CALLED “EASTERN HORDES.” Rocket scientist Wernher von Braun wanted to be captured by the Americans and, certainly, not by the invading Russians, which von Braun had referred to as “eastern hordes.”

In the closing days of the war, von Braun and his engineering group were moved to Austria.

On 2 May 1945, von Braun’s brother and fellow-rocket engineer, Magnus, rode a bicycle and approached a U.S. soldier from the U.S. 44th Infantry Division calling out in broken English, “My name is Magnus von Braun. My brother invented the V-2. We want to surrender.”

In the mad rush to collect as many German scientists as possible at war’s end, Wernher von Braun was the ultimate prize. “Of the more than 1,600 Nazi scientists brought to the United States, Dr. Wernher von Braun was the ‘preeminent catch,’” this according to Eric Lichtblau, author of “The Nazis Next Door.”

SANDAG CEO Hasan Ikhrata Announces His EXIT SANDAG Chief Executive Officer Hasan Ikhrata submitted his notice to the Board of Directors recently.

His last day with the agency will be December 29.

Chairwoman Nora Vargas will be leading the transition with the SANDAG Board to discuss next steps to fill the CEO role. More details to come in the upcoming months.

SANDAG is the regional agency that connects people, places, and innovative ideas by implementing solutions with our unique and diverse communities. We are committed to creating a San Diego region where every person who visits, works, and lives can thrive.

Before joining SANDAG, Ikhrata served as Executive Director of SCAG, after holding a variety of leadership roles at the organization. Ikhrata holds a master’s degree in civil and industrial engineering from UCLA and is a PhD candidate in Urban Planning and Transportation from the University of Southern California.

·In April of last year, a report came out showing over the past four years of credit card purchases, SANDAG spent over $2,485,001 of taxpayer dollars on their purchase card. Those charges include over $69,000 on restaurants, over $169,000 on Southwest Airlines and over $249,000 on bookstores.

But every now and then you get a bottom feeder who manages to rise to the top of a department . . . or of a governmental organization . . . and he, or she, cleans up financially - and, he or she often does not answer to the board of directors . . . or follow

The market is open every month, every week, every Saturday – regardless of the weather – from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon.

Over a dozen makers and crafters attend each week with their soap, pottery, clothing, hats, jewelry, gifts, dog treats, and more. Each week features a variety of musicians as well as several services such as knife and tool sharpening, and massage.

Such has been the case with SANDAG, the San Diego Organization of Governments ad its curren CEO, Hasan Ikhrata.

Things have changed. And not for the better.

I shall not shed any tears over his departure.

SANDAG’s primary focus must be on finding a new leader who embodies the qualities of a consensus builder who can collaborateeffectively with all cities and unincorporated area communities in San Diego County.

SANDAG should prioritize taxpayers’ needs and use San Diegans’ hard-earned money efficiently and responsibly. I am committed to supporting a new SANDAG executive who will diligently work toward designing a comprehensive regional transportation plan that addresses the needs ofthe entire region, including freeways and roads.

The new candidate must promise to fulfill the projects promised to voters in the 2004 ballot measure.

In Loving Memory of Marcia Mae Huls With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, Marcia Huls, who touched the lives of many as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great aunt, cousin, and friend. She gracefully embraced every role with unwavering love, generosity, and thoughtfulness, leaving an indelible mark on all those she encountered.

Marcia was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, October 31, 1934 and passed away in Escondido, California June 15, 2023.

She was 88.

Elegance and style were her trademarks, as she effortlessly carried herself with class and grace. Whether it was in her impeccable appearance or her warm interactions with others, she exuded a timeless charm that left everyone she met feeling uplifted and cherished.

Marcia also had a beautiful gift for music, showcasing her talent as a pianist, organist, and vocalist with a melodious voice filling hearts with sweet melodies during Sunday service.

She was a devoted Christian who served the Lord. Marcia married Richard in Holland, Michigan in 1957. Since moving to San Diego in 1958 and Escondido in 1962, her kindness and compassion knew no bounds, and she was a pillar of strength for those seeking comfort and guidance all of these years.

As a mother of 5, Matthew (wife Danyel), Michael, Tanya Huls Hunsinger (husband Michael), Lisa Huls Young, and Mark (wife Amber), grandmother of 6 and great grandmother of 7, she nurtured her family with boundless affection, creating a loving and nurturing home where everyone felt welcomed and valued. Her legacy lives on through the generations she leaves behind, as her teachings and grace continue to shape their lives.

Though she may no longer walk among us, her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. In “Wernher von Braun: Crusader for Space,” it was clearly stated that von Braun was aware of conditions of slave labourers (comprised of concentration camp prisoners) who were forced to work on his V-2 rocket programme.

Documented paper trail confirms Braun’s predicament.

In addition to his German Nazi Party membership, von Braun was also pressured to join the SS (Schutzstaffel).

In the spring of 1940, a certain SS-colonel (Mueller) paid von Braun an official visit informing the scientist that Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler had urged von Braun to also join the SS. Such urging from the SS hierarchy was always understood as a cloaked demand rather than a request.

Under such a behest, von Braun “joined the organisation and was issued with membership No. 185,068.”

When asked if von Braun could have protested against the brutal treatment of the slave labourers, von Braun team member, Konrad Dannenberg, told The Huntsville Times newspaper in America:

After visiting a plant in Mittelwerk a friend of von Braun quoted the scientist as saying: “It is hellish. My spontaneous reaction was to talk to one of the SS guards, only to be told with unmistakable harshness that I should mind my own business, or find myself in the same striped fatigues!”

More slave workers died building the V-2 rocket than were killed by it as a weapon of war.

Under suspicion himself, von Braun commented, “I realised that any attempt of reasoning on humane grounds would be utterly futile.”

Von Braun had been under surveillance since October 1943. A SS re-

Such talk could easily have resulted in the death sentence for treason as with President Vladimir Putin’s regime today.

Von Braun was arrested by the Gestapo and was detained on 14 March 1944 and taken to a Gestapo cell in Stettin (now Szezecin, Poland), where he was held for two weeks.

Von Braun was begrudgingly released only so that he could continue his work on the V-2 programme.

Quoting from the “Fuhrerprotokoll” (the minutes of Hitler’s meetings) Adolf Hitler interceded on von Braun’s behalf for release.

Hitler stated (translated from the original German): “In the matter concerning Wernher von Braun, I will guarantee you that he will be exempt from persecution as long as he is indispensable.”

Privately, Wernher von Braun’s

Bipartisan Healthcare Legislation Bills that made it through the Senate and Assembly by the “House of Origin Deadline on June 2nd must pass a final floor vote by September 14, when we adjourn for the year. Approximately 1100 bills are currently pending in both houses and the Governor will have until October 14 to sign or veto everything that reaches his desk.

This session I’m supporting several important healthcare-related bills. They include Senate Bill 635 (Senators Menjivar & Portantino), which requires health insurers to cover medically-necessary hearing aids for persons under 21 years old. It’s estimated that twothree of every 1,000 children are born with hearing loss, which can seriously hinder their communication skills. More than 30 states require this coverage for children.

Unfortunately, California is not one of them New advances in biomarker testing, which tailors cancer treatments to a patient’s specific needs, can significantly improve survival rates. Insurance coverage has not kept pace with medical advances, and the lack of coverage has hindered biomarker testing for many patients. SB 496 (Limon), will require health insurers and the state’s Medi-Cal program to cover biomarker test-

ing for covered patients.

Another bill involving Medi-Cal reimbursements, SB 282 (Senators Eggman & McGuire), will allow clinics to receive reimbursement for primary care and mental health services provided to patients on the same day. This is currently not allowed even when physical and mental health visits are both necessary and the services are available at the same clinic.

SB 873 (Bradford), will ensure that patients can afford their medications by directing manufacturer rebates to the patient at the time of purchase, avoiding payments to middlemen such as healthcare corporations, which can delay rebates to patients for months.

These bills have bi-partisan support. Their next stop will be the Appropriations Committee, and from there to the full Assembly, where final passage appears likely.

Drowning Prevention Last week, was a day of great significance as I stood alongside the City of Oceanside and The Prevent Drowning Foundation to raise awareness for a crucial cause - Drowning Prevention.

We have all heard heartbreaking stories of children falling into pools or parents looking away for just a few moments, resulting in tragic incidents. With the summer heat upon us, more and more people will seek relief in pools and the ocean. Our kids and people of all ages must be equipped with the vital skill of swimming.

According to the CDC, 79% of children in households with incomes less than $50,000 have little-to-no swimming ability. In California, drowning is a leading cause of injury-related deaths among children under five.

These are not just statistics; they are a call to action. This cause is close to our hearts, and we have made it a top priority in our office.

Through our efforts, we have been able to make a significant

impact on water safety in San Diego County.

This year our office provided $45,000 in grants to the Oceanside YMCA, ensuring that people of all age groups can access free swimming lessons.

Last year, in collaboration with the County of San Diego, we successfully secured $250,000 to expand the Prevent Drowning Foundation San Diego swim lesson and water safety program, furthering our commitment to creating a safer environment.

We have also extended our support to the Autism Society San Diego by providing $25,000 in grants for swim lessons, ensuring safety for all.

Apple Wants To Charge Me Again For AppleCare Coverage Susan Lennon’s iPhone gets stolen in the mail, but Apple assures her she can use her AppleCare coverage on its replacement. So why is it asking her to sign up again for AppleCare?

Q: I’ve had an ongoing nightmare with Apple since last October when the new iPhone14 Pro I ordered online was stolen between the Apple store and my home.

A: Apple should have been able to transfer your AppleCare coverage from your stolen phone to your replacement. At least that’s how I read the company’s terms and conditions, which say that if Apple replaces your device, it will “automatically transfer your plan to your new device.”

I purchased AppleCare coverage to go with the phone. When I ordered a replacement, I asked if I needed to cancel the AppleCare and buy it again. A representative told me I didn’t and that it would be automatically appended to the new phone.

I did not get a refund, and I assumed naïvely that it was all taken care of. Fast forward to earlier this year when I got a notice in my settings that I had one day left to purchase AppleCare on my current phone. This set in motion a process that is still not resolved. I have been

Probably the most-commonly discussed “golden age’ has to do with communication – and, depending upon your age, that can take in a wide variety of subjects -- magazines, newspapers, television, and radio.

Remember Collier’s, Saturday Evening Post, Life, or Look (magazines)? No? Then you hadn’t made your arrival here on earth until after the 1950s. Among many others, those were popular weekly publications that were the ‘People” magazines of their day. News magazines such as Time and U.S. News & World Report were in the heyday by mid-century. Life,

Should Overseas Adventure Travel cover my airfare for a canceled pretrip excursion?

Overseas Adventure Travel cancels Julie Brown’s pretrip excursion on her Costa Rica tour. But who will pay for her new airline ticket? The company says she’s responsible, but is she?

Q: I booked a trip for two to Costa Rica through Overseas Adventure Travel last year. It included pretrip and post-trip extensions and round-trip airfare from San Francisco. I also paid for a business class upgrade, which cost $2,032 per person.

In late December, I received a call from Overseas Adventure Travel advising that it had canceled the pretrip portion due to a lack of interest. I had to rebook the airline tickets because the departure date would now be different. Because we were only two months from departure, the cost for this rebooking was an additional $1,056 per person, which the agent advised I would have to pay.

I appealed the decision to the ex-

ecutive contacts on your website but never got a response.

During the trip, I spoke to some of the travelers who indicated they had inquired last October about the pretrip. Overseas Adventure Travel told them the pretrip had been canceled. But the company waited another two months to advise me of the cancellation. If it had told me immediately once the decision was made to cancel the pretrip, the air would have been much less than two months before departure. ~ Julie Brown, San Ramon, Calif.

A: You’re right, Overseas Adventure Travel bears some responsibility for the increase in your costs. If it knew that your pretrip was canceled, it should have told you immediately. Instead, it appears the company waited several months. And it’s no secret that airfares start to rise as you get closer to your departure date.

Overseas Adventure Travel’s terms are clear. “Company is not

responsible for any losses you may incur” as a result of cancellations.

I’m also troubled by the way the company handled your request for help. You started with a polite phone call and then followed up in writing, first through the customer service department and then to an Overseas Adventure Travel executive (as you note, I list their names and numbers on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org).

“When I spoke with several customer service reps at Overseas Adventure Travel, they told me that they never respond to written correspondence and that we needed to call them, not write to them,” you told me. “They also refused to let me speak with a supervisor or manager.”

I have a problem with that kind of “customer service.” A company should always answer its customers, even if it’s to politely say “no.”

If you’re considering a tour with Overseas Adventure Travel, it’s helpful to know that they will hold you responsible for their schedule changes, at least when it comes to airfare. Also, they may not respond to your email.

I contacted Overseas Adventure Travel on your behalf. A representative responded to me.

“Regarding Ms. Brown’s experience with customer service, we have expanded our traveler support team and extended our hours of operation to address the high volume of inquiries,” the representative told me. “We spoke with Ms. Brown, and she accepted a $2,100 certificate in compensation for this issue.”

Hotels are returning fire in the “junk fee” war. Don’t be a casualty Robert Kraus encountered the worst junk fee ever on a recent visit to Washington, D.C. That’s when his hotel added a surprise $20 “Daily Mandatory Destination Charge” to his bill.

The Hotel Worker Protection Ordinance is a new city law that requires hotel employers to compensate housekeepers if they are required to clean more than a certain number of square feet in one eight-hour shift. It also prevents hotels from offering guests any incentive to decline daily room cleaning.

A Daily Mandatory what?

Yeah, that’s just a fancy new word for a resort fee. Kraus’ surcharge covered food and beverage credit, bike rental and “free” internet. But Kraus, a meeting planner from Miami, says this one was different: The hotel had cleverly repackaged it as a mandatory tax.

“They said they had no control over the fee,” he says. “I pointed out there is no mandatory destination tax and that they can very much drop this ridiculous fee.”

Those annoying hotel charges were supposed to disappear after the government declared war on junk fees earlier this year. Instead, hotels have returned fire in the junk fee war by adding surprising new extras. Customers are fighting them in the courts and Congress, but there are also ways of killing the fees one at a time.

The average hotel now charges a mandatory daily resort fee of $26, up 3% from last year, according to Randy Greencorn, publisher of ResortFeeChecker.com, “Hotels have gotten creative in their terminology,” he says. “A resort fee is sometimes called a destination fee, administrative fee, cleaning fee, service fee or a utility fee. Some hotels now charge towel fees, bed sheet fees and concierge fees. These are all mandatory fees on top of the room rate and taxes.”

Wait, aren’t hotel fees going away?

Hang on. Didn’t the Biden administration declare war on junk fees like Kraus’ daily mandatory destination charge earlier this year? Yes, it did.

But instead of backing off and quoting an all-in rate, many hotels have doubled down on the extras. Even

“Some hotels are continuing to drive up the average daily room rate using hidden fees,” says Tim Hentschel, CEO of HotelPlanner. com. The most common fees this summer have been cleaning surcharges and resort fees -- ahem, I mean, destination fees.

“Sometimes the fee is verbally disclosed to the guest at check-in, but other times a guest might not see it unless they look closely at their check-out invoice,” he adds.

Hotel junk fees come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from daily surcharges for items that used to be included in your hotel bill (like towels or “free” internet usage) to new ones like a “worker protection fee,” which supposedly covers the cost of a new law that increases hotel workers’ minimum wage.

No one knows how many hotels charge “junk” fees. But based on the number of complaints I’ve received as a consumer advocate, and some of the lawsuit activity in recent months, it’s safe to say many hotels are adding junk fees during periods of peak demand and high occupancy levels. This has left travelers infuriated.

Will hotel guests grow to “love” junk fees?

Hotels didn’t just sneak in more fees after the administration said it would fight them. At least one hotel did so openly. In a highly unusual move, the Shay Hotel in Culver City, Calif., sent me a press release claiming it had developed a destination fee that opens a door “to a world of exclusive experiences” and “that guests will genuinely love.”

For $30 a night, it includes two single-ride Metro passes per stay, a daily drop-off service via rideshare service within a two-mile radius of the hotel, access to a yoga studio, “free” electric vehicle charging and “complimentary” domestic phone calls.

If the nightly resort fee (sorry, destination fee) were optional, that might be a pretty good deal. So I checked with the hotel and was disappointed to learn that the $30 fee is mandatory. So technically, neither the phone calls nor the EV charging is “free.”

The Shay’s resort fee promotion is remarkable not because of its claim to make its guests love resort fees (it won’t) but because of its audaciousness. It comes only a few months after the White House pledged to kill hotel resort fees. It also reveals the hotel industry’s attitude toward junk fees. Administration officials can talk all they want -- and hotels will keep raising their fees and adding new ones.

Amid junk fee fury, guests are taking hotels to court.

Hotel guests are frustrated with the lack of meaningful relief from junk fees, so they’ve taken matters into their own hands.

Earlier this summer, a group of hotel guests filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against several Marriott hotels, alleging that daily fees called “Hotel Worker Protection Ordinance Costs Sur-

The lawsuit estimates that one Los Angeles Marriott would collect roughly $3.6 million a year from the fees. It alleges that these extra fees are confusing and misleading to customers, and don’t go towards the cost of compliance with the ordinance.

The courts have been busy with hotel fees, particularly resort fees.

Two years ago, Marriott settled with the state of Pennsylvania over the disclosure of resort fees.

As part of the agreement, the hotel agreed to prominently disclose the total price of a hotel stay, including room rate and all other mandatory fees, on the first page of its booking website.

It’s easy to see why hotel guests are so frustrated. In their view, hotels have stopped pretending that the fees are for anything other than profit.

That’s what Catherine Lux, a marketing consultant based in London, noticed when she checked into a hotel in Miami recently. The mandatory “resort fee” didn’t even include the cost of a beach umbrella (it was an extra $25).

“I’ll never understand how they can justify charging so much extra for an umbrella instead of keeping guests safe from the sun as part of the already-extortionate and ridiculous resort fee,” she says.

Hotel junk fees will get worse before they get better.

Why are hotels being so defiant?

The Junk Fee Prevention Act, which would eliminate these bothersome surcharges, is unlikely to pass in an evenly split Congress, say observers.

“Hotels certainly won’t move to reduce these junk fees until they’re forced to by law or intense pressure from consumers,” says Gillian Dewar, chief financial officer of Creditful, a personal finance website. “For the most part, consumers get irritated by these fees. But they accept them.”

According to team member, Ernst Stuhlinger, even if only a janitor were close enough to hear them, German was verboten (forbidden).

The new German residents were now settling down in a new culture. The Monte Sano mountains, near Huntsville, in northeast Alabama, reminded the new Teutonic residents of their homeland.

However, the Alabama residents were wary of their new German neighbours as many of them knew about the Nazi Party and V-2 rockets of World War II that rained death over London.

One in two Americans suffered security breaches in 2022 with over 100 million Americans suffering some financial loss from cyber-attacks Over nearly three decades here at the computer factory we have seen countless cyber attack victims. Most lost only a few hundred dollars but a few lost a lot more.

Contact may claim to be a legitimate or known source (spoof) like your bank, credit card issuer, church, government agency, relative, friend etc. “Phishing” exploits typically attempt to elicit an emotional response causing the victim to take some action that benefits the “phisher” through direct payment or by giving up personal information that allows the cyber-criminal access to the victims personal assets.

Getting scammed is never fun and it can happen to anyone at any age. When it happens to a younger person, there is at least time to recover. When seniors get scammed it can be devastating because they may not have the means to financial recovery.

Never use the contact/verification information provided in the contact message. Look up the contact information (bank, agency, church, friend etc) independently and contact them directly to verify the legitimacy of the initial contact.

2. Freebies, limited time giveaways, promotion opportunities and payment requests by gift card, bit coin, or pre-paid debit card are nearly always scams.

3. Never give personal or financial information to or click on any website invitation from an unsolicited contact.

4. Don’t cash checks for unknown parties. If a source claims to have

made an inadvertent overpayment into your account and requests a refund, don’t do it unless your bank attests that the deposit has been verified and cleared.

The USA, is the wealthiest country in the World, and is the prime target for cybercriminal networks. 65% of cybercrime exploits target USA citizens and institutions. Russia and China are the leading safe havens for cybercrime networks that attack Western nations.

We see 20 to 30 phishing emails each week on our work PCs. Some tempt us to click and “lean more”, but we don’t do it because we know better.

Each week some of our customers who also “know better” are tempted to take just one more “click.” They’re typically savvy enough to quit before they get scammed, but the “cybercriminals” are nasty enough to lock their PCs out of Windows just for sport. We always enjoy seeing our old friends again.

Today’s television programming is far-reaching. There’s very little that you can think of that isn’t available on a wide variety of “streaming” channels. Movie theaters have all but been wiped out because of today’s modern era of television programming.

America, as a nation, got their first glimpse of Dr. Wernher von Braun on 9 March 1955 when he appeared on the first episode of Walt Disney’s “Tomorrowland” television series.

Von Braun would stay on to serve as Walt’s technical advisor on three space-related television films. Early on, when Disneyland in Anaheim was having technical difficulties in the creation of the park’s Tomorrowland, they asked for Wernher von Braun’s guidance and expertise. According to David R. Smith, Director of Archives at Walt Disney Productions, von Braun “pounced on the opportunity.” As a result, von Braun provided behind-the-scenes expertise in Disneyland’s creation of Tomorrowland at the famed Anaheim park in California.

By the mid-1960s, Wernher von Braun was persuading legendary University of Alabama football coach, Bear Bryant and rival Auburn coach, Shug Jordan, to make television appearances with him to ask local voters to approve a bond to create a Space and Rocket Centre.

In a gesture of pure fun, a TV crew went to Wernher von Braun’s erstwhile environs in Huntsville, Alabama where the “Rocket Man” is well known and they asked people: “How do you pronounce the last name of your scientist who first put a human being on the moon?”
