MIXED N’ MATCHED
Teacher lauds MATATAG pilot implementation
by: SHARIFAH CATE MAHINAY
PANABO CITY, Davao Del Norte—Noting that her grade seven students are “learning more” through the MATATAG Pilot Testing, a grade seven teacher affirmed the effectiveness of the new curriculum’s approach.
Roneth E. Porton, a Panabo City National High School Filipino teacher, described the new curriculum as a “mix and match” approach that allows students to balance literature and grammar in their lessons, a change from the previous curriculum’s focus primarily on literature.
“Itapad siya pirmente ba, dile nga puro panitikan, gamay ra ang grammar, so murag gi mix and match, dili unli rice nga isa ra ang sud an ba,” she said. Furthermore, the teacher observed that the previous curriculum focused solely on literature competencies in the Filipino subject, which she found monotonous. “Way back last year, sa Filipino, more on panitikan mi, so very boring, wala kayo grammar, and nakanindot karon is gisabay ang panitikan ug grammar,” she added.
Also, Porton conveyed student feedback in which she said that students found this new style a more comprehensible approach, and more effective.
“Aside from makalearn sila og panitikan, makalearn pud sila og grammar so nindot pud gyud daw kaayo kay laloman na sila (with the lessons),” the teacher further explained. 45-minute teaching According to Porton, it’s difficult to cover all the essential competencies effectively within the limited 45-minute class period, as there isn’t enough time to address each topic in depth. To note, this mantra was brought on by the Department of
Education Order No. 10 s. 2024, that allowed schools to implement 45-minute class periods for each subject for five days a week. However, the Filipino teacher also noted that it is up to the teacher to manage their time on how they administer the needed lessons and ensure that students are genuinely learning.
“Taas kayo ang topic tapos gamay ra ang oras pero depende ra gyud na sa style og strategy sa teacher,” Porton said.

“Hindi lang sa apat na sulok ng paaralan kundi sa lahat, buong pagkatao ang dapat paunlarin natin. Hindi lang yung utak, pagpapaganda, kundi buong pagkatao natin. Kailangang malawak yun upang hind imaging makitid ang pag-iisip.” She said.
The games played every Thursday at 3:00 p.m. are chess, billiards, badminton, basketball, volleyball, e-sports, darts, scrabble, word factory, and ‘laro ng lahi’ for the culmination program.
