History of the Palace Theatre History of the Palace Theatre

The Palace Theatre’s history begins with Victor Charas, an immigrant from Thegala, Greece.

In June of 1914, Charas began construction insisting that the Palace Theatre resemble a smaller version of its namesake in New York City. Charas determined that the Palace Theatre would include modern safety and comfort features including firewalls and “air-conditioning.” The theatre was “air-conditioned” by large fans that blew air over great blocks of ice under the stage.

Construction was completed in less than a year, and on April 9, 1915, the Palace Theatre celebrated its grand opening night with a performance of the play, “A Modern Eve.” The Palace Theatre featured many different kinds of entertainment including ballets, operas, plays, variety acts, philharmonic concerts, and performances by The Palace Professional Players.

Early on, the Palace Theatre joined the Keith and Albee Vaudeville Circuit.

Vaudeville filled the Palace Theatre with numerous shows each week. Vaudeville was responsible for launching the careers of many great entertainers including Jimmy Durante, Bob Hope, The Marx Brothers, Red Skelton, Sammy Davis Junior, Milton Berle, Al Jolson, Harry Blackstone, Sr. Bill Robinson a.k.a. Mr. Bojangles, Ray Charles and Don Knotts; many of whom performed at the Manchester, NH Palace Theatre.

Following the era of the “Great Depression,” talking movies had largely replaced Vaudeville. Beginning in the 1930s the Palace Theatre, like so many of its competitors, began to transition itself into a “movie house.”

By the mid 1960s, the Palace was struggling and was eventually forced to close its doors. The theatre fell into disarray as the seats were removed and the space was converted into a warehouse.

In the early 1970s, the Palace Theatre was slated to be torn down and converted into a parking lot. However, in 1974, Attorney John McLane and Mayor Sylvio S. Dupuis spearheaded an effort to purchase and preserve the Palace Theatre. With assistance from the Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation, the Palace celebrated its re-opening on November 2, 1974.

Since 1974, the Palace has seen both calamity and success! In December 1980, a pipe burst in the roof sending 70,000 gallons of water gushing over the rail of the balcony onto the lower level. In 1984, a fire on Hanover Street damaged most of the block, but the Palace Theatre’s firewall saved the Palace and the rest of Hanover Street!

The Palace Theatre has withstood the test of time and has become a beautifully restored professional performing arts center that hosts its own professional company, youth and teen programs and presenting acts to entertain, inspire, educate and connect its members and the community. The Palace serves as a cornerstone of New Hampshire’s thriving arts and entertainment scene and is a vital part of Manchester’s downtown economic and social community.

In July 2012, the Palace Theatre was selected as the 2012 Outstanding Historic Theatre by the League of Historic Theatres. This prestigious award recognizes that the Palace Theatre has demonstrated excellence through its significant community impact, quality of programs and services, and quality of the restoration or rehabilitation of its historic structure.

In a city that once hosted 22 theatres, the Palace Theatre is now the sole survivor.

As we continue to thrive in our 104th year, the Palace Theatre would like to take a moment to thank the many donors, sponsors, employees, and patrons who have invested in our organization. THE STORY OF THE NUTCRACKER The Nutcracker Insert choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov and scored The Nutcracker is a ballet

by Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, it premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1892.

Tchaikovsky’s score was a success from the start, and the ballet itself became very popular by the 1960s and is now performed around the world during the winter holiday season.

As the curtain opens on Act I, it is Christmas Eve. Herr Drosselmeyer, with the help of his elves, gathers several special gifts to bring to the Silberhaus home, where a Christmas Eve party is about to begin. Scene Two brings us to the Silberhaus home where the festivities are already underway. Herr Silberhaus, his wife, and their two children, Clara and Fritz, are thrilled to be joined by family and friends, and especially their godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer.

During the course of the evening, Drosselmeyer entertains with magic tricks, a puppet show, and life-sized dolls which dance to the delight of both the children and adults.

Drosselmeyer then presents Clara with a special gift - a handsome Nutcracker doll, which Clara loves immediately. In a fit of jealousy, Fritz seizes the Nutcracker and throws it to the ground, breaking it. Clara is heartbroken and Drosselmeyer, who does his best to mend the broken toy, comforts her. After the guests leave, Clara reluctantly leaves the Nutcracker in the parlor for the night, and the family goes to bed.

Later that night, Clara sneaks downstairs to retrieve her precious Nutcracker. As the clock strikes midnight, Drosselmeyer works his magic to bring the Nutcracker to life.

Along with an army of toy soldiers, the Nutcracker battles the evil Mouse King and his gang of mice. During the battle, the Mouse King wounds the Nutcracker, and Clara throws her slipper at the Mouse King, distracting him long enough for the Nutcracker to defeat him. As the Mouse King is carried off by his retreating mice, Drosselmeyer transforms the Nutcracker into a handsome young prince, who leads Clara to the enchanted snow forest. After a whirlwind dance by the Snowflakes, Clara and the Thesend Storythem of theon Nutcracker Nutcracker Prince meet the Snow Queen and King, who then their way to the Kingdom of Sweets.

In Act II, Clara and the Nutcracker Prince arrive at the Kingdom of the Sweets, where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy and a host of angels. An elaborate ceremony is held in Clara’s honor, and she and the Nutcracker Prince are entertained by a number of dances from around the world as well as Candy Canes, Mirlitons, Dew Drop Fairy and her Flowers, Mother Ginger and her Polichinelles. A shimmering Pas de Deux by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier mark a memorable end to Clara’s magical journey, and she and the Nutcracker Prince are escorted back to their sleigh as all the subjects from the Kingdom of the Sweets wave goodbye.

Palace Theatre and Wallace Pineault (Original Design) PATRICIA LAVOIE Artistic Director A native of Bedford, New Hampshire, Ms. Lavoie has danced professionally with the Connecticut Ballet, New Jersey Ballet, and the Des Moines Ballet, where she later joined the company’s faculty. Ms. Lavoie received her early training at Point Park College and the Pennsylvania Ballet. She later continued her training in New York City under scholarship with such notable teachers as David Howard, Robert Blankshine, Gerrard Sibrette, Nanette Glushak, and Finis Jhung. Ms. Lavoie founded Southern New Hampshire Dance Theater (SNHDT) in Bedford, New Hampshire in 1996 and organized its performing company in 1998.

DOUGLAS DAVIS Choreographer and Drosselmeyer Mr. Davis received his early training with Stefan Wenta in Hollywood, Irena Kosmovska at Los Angeles Ballet, and Stanley Holden at the Stanley Holden Dance Center. He completed his studies at the School of American Ballet (SAB) in NYC, studying with Stanley Williams and Andre Kramerevsky. Mr. Davis is a former member of the Bern Ballet in Switzerland and the Berlin Ballet in Germany. He has also danced with the Los Angeles Ballet, Nevada Dance Theater, and the Garden State Ballet. Mr. Davis has been on staff at Southern New Hampshire Dance Theater (SNHDT) since 1997 as an instructor, resident choreographer, and guest artist. Most recently, he created two original works for SNHDT, Smetana Suite in 2008 and Symphonic Variations in 2010, which were chosen to be performed at Regional Dance America’s Northeast Festival.

JACQUELINE HAWKES Stage Manager Jacqueline is happy to be returning to Southern New Hampshire Dance Theater, where her previous productions include many years of The Nutcracker and Spring Fling. Jacqueline has stage managed for such companies as Yellow Taxi Productions (NH), Jukwaa Mazoa (NH), Baruch Performing Arts Center (NY), New Perspective Theatre Company (NY).

Jacqueline has a BA in Theatre from New England College.

Assaf Benchetrit (Arabian Soloist) Assaf Benchetrit is a graduate of the Rubin Academy for Music and Dance in Jerusalem, Israel. His professional credits include Jerusalem Dance Theater, Israeli National Ballet Company, Joffrey Ballet, Metropolitan Classical Ballet, Alabama Ballet, Connecticut Ballet, Portland Ballet, and Gelsey Kirkland Ballet. Assaf holds both a BFA and MFA in Dance, and is currently Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance at UNH. Zachery Betty (Nutcracker) Zackery received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College with a concentration in Jazz.

He is the Co-Artistic Director for NSquared Dance, a New Hampshire based contemporary dance company. NSquared Dance was founded in New York City in 2014 & Zackery has toured throughout the United States with the company. Zackery also was a member of Keigwin & Company, a prestigious New York City modern dance company from 2014-2019. Touring nationally and internationally. He has also been a member and guest dancer with Tami Stronach Dance, Project 44, New Hampshire Dance Collective, Ballet Misha, & City Ballet of Boston. Erika Davis (Sugarplum) Erika Davis is an alumna of Southern New Hampshire Dance Theater. She received her business degree with honors from Muhlenberg College. Erika’s training includes Carolina Ballet, School of American Ballet, NC Dance Theater, and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. She has been featured in works by Jessica Lang, Karole Armitage, and Charlotte Boye-Christensen in Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and in George Balanchine’s Theme & Variations.

Nathan Duszny (Spanish Soloist) Nathan Duszny, a New Hampshire native, is thrilled to back home at the Palace Theatre performing with Southern New Hampshire Dance Theater! Sallie Havens (Arabian Soloist) Sallie is an alumna of Southern New Hampshire Dance Theater and has performed in ballets including Don Quixote, Giselle, La Bayadere, Swan Lake, and Balanchine’s Valse Fantaisie. She also trained at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Ballet Academy East, Steps on Broadway, and Ballet Austin. Sallie has a BBA in marketing from Pace University in NYC and is a former NE Patriots Cheerleader.

Valerie Manha (Spanish Soloist) Faculty and alumna of Southern NH Dance Theater, Valerie also trained at Oklahoma City Ballet, Burklyn Ballet and performed with FreeFall Contemporary Dance Company and Saving Grace Dance Ensemble. Her performing credits include The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and Giselle to name a few.

Nick Neagle (Soldier Doll, Candy Cane Soloist, Mouse King) Nick Neagle holds a BFA in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College and founded the NSquared Dance Company in 2014. Nick has self-produced three shows in New York City and two domestic tours to Portland, Maine. He has shown works in over twenty five festivals. Nick’s choreography has taken him and NSquared Dance to Seattle, Detroit, Vermont, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Portland, New Hampshire. Nick is also a part of NH Collaborative Dance Arts located in Manchester, NH. Nick teaches dance locally in NH and is also a certified personal trainer. Wallace Pineault (Grandfather, Mother Ginger) Mr. Pineault is a former professor of theatre at New England College where he taught directing, acting, theory and design. COVID-19: PATRON SAFETY GUIDELINES • Tickets must be purchased over the phone at (603) 668-5588. We are not accepting cash at this time and tickets will be mailed to you. All seating will be Guidelines Best Available at the time of sale and you may NOT Patron Safety change or move your seat once you are seated.

• Seating will be under 50% capacity and blocked off for 6 foot social distancing.

• All patrons, staff and volunteers (over the age of 2) must wear face coverings when entering and exiting the facility, waiting in lines, transiting to/from the theatre and to/from the restrooms. Face coverings are strongly recommended when seated and watching the performance.

• Before entering the facility, patrons must answer “NO” to the following questions: 1.

Have you been in close contact with someone who is suspected or confirmed to have had COVID-19 in the last 14 days? (NOTE: Healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment should answer “no” to this question)

Have you had a fever or felt feverish in the last 72 hours?

Are you experiencing any respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, or difficulty breathing?

Are you experiencing any new muscle aches, significant tiredness, or chills?

• Cast meet and greets have been suspended at this time.

• At the conclusion of the performance, the downstairs fire doors will be opened for exiting the theatre.

The Palace Theatre is a smoke free environment.

Please turn off and put away all noise making devices (including cell phones and pagers) for the duration of the performance. Any unauthorized photographic, video, or audio recording of this event is an infringement on Copyright Law and is strictly prohibited. The Palace Theatre reserves the right to ask any patron causing a disturbance to leave the premises without a refund ticket. The Palace Theatre does not cancel performances due to inclement weather. If you absolutely cannot attend your scheduled performance, please contact the box office prior to the performance. No refunds will be issued.

LATECOMERS

All latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management in order to minimize distractions in our theatre space. Latecomers may be required to sit in the rear of the theatre. Refunds/exchanges will not be issued to latecomers.

ACCESSIBILITY

Designated locations are reserved for patrons with accessibility needs and patrons in wheelchairs.

Please mention any special needs at the time of purchase with the box office. Assisted listening devices are available in the lobby.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES

For the comfort of our patrons, the Palace Theatre offers a wide array of beverages and snacks before the show and during intermission at our bar in the back. All bars accept cash or credit cards.

Food and drink are not permitted in the theatre.

However, bottled water is permitted in the theatre as well as drinks purchased in our spill-resistant souvenir cup.

PARKING

On-street parking is available on Hanover Street and the surrounding streets. Rates are typically $0.75 per hour Monday through Friday 8:00am to 8:00pm. Read meters for specific details and applicable hours. The Victory Garage on the corner of Chestnut Street and Amherst Street also offers paid parking for patrons. On Saturdays and Sundays, patrons may enjoy free on-street parking and free parking in the Victory Parking Garage.

TICKETS

Tickets may be purchased to any performance in person, by phone, or online. The Palace Theatre box office is open Monday thru Friday from 9am to 7pm, Saturdays from 9am to 5pm, and three (3) hours prior to each performance. The box office accepts cash, checks and all major credit cards. All discounts or promotions must be mentioned at time of sale. Please note that all sales and fees are final; there are no refunds.

CHILDREN

Unless attending a children’s show, our general guideline for the appropriate age of children is 6+.

Please be considerate of other patrons if your child is unable to sit still and quietly through a performance.

All children must have a ticket.
