HIstory of THE PALACE THEATRE
The Palace Theatre’s history begins with Victor Charas, an immigrant from Thegala, Greece, who began construction in June 1914 – insisting that the Palace Theatre resemble a smaller version of its namesake in New York City. Construction was completed in less than a year, complete with modern safety and comfort features such as firewalls and “air-conditioning” by large fans that blew air over huge blocks of ice under the stage.
On April 9, 1915, the Palace Theatre celebrated its grand opening night with a performance of the play, “A Modern Eve.” The Palace Theatre featured many different kinds of entertainment including ballets, operas, plays, variety acts, philharmonic concerts, and performances by the Palace Professional Players. Soon after, the Palace Theatre joined the Keith and Albee Vaudeville Circuit and Vaudeville filled the Theatre with numerous shows each week. Vaudeville was responsible for launching the careers of many great entertainers including Jimmy Durante, Bob Hope, The Marx Brothers, Red Skelton, Sammy Davis Junior, Milton Berle, Al Jolson, Harry Blackstone, Sr. Bill Robinson a.k.a. Mr. Bojangles, Ray Charles and Don Knotts - many of whom performed at Manchester’s Palace Theatre.
Following the Great Depression, talking movies largely had replaced Vaudeville. Beginning in the 1930s the Palace Theatre, like so many of its competitors, began to transition itself into a “movie house.” But by the mid-1960s, the Palace was struggling and eventually forced to close its doors. The theatre fell into disrepair as the seats were removed and the space was used as a warehouse. In the early 1970s, the Palace Theatre was slated to be torn down and converted to a parking lot, however, Attorney John McLane and Mayor Sylvio L. Dupuis spearheaded an effort to purchase the Palace and celebrated its re-opening on November 2, 1974.
Since 1974, the Palace has seen both calamity and success. In December 1980, a pipe burst in the roof sending 70,000 gallons of water gushing over the rail of the balcony onto the lower level. In 1984, a fire on Hanover Street damaged most of the block, but the Palace Theatre’s firewall saved the Palace and the rest of Hanover Street! From 1983-1995, Robert Shea served as Executive Director and Artistic Director of the Palace Theatre, helping to develop the “Opera Block” and bring downtown Manchester to life.
The Palace Theatre has withstood the test of time and been beautifully restored as a historic performing arts center. In July 2012, the Palace Theatre was selected as the 2012 Outstanding Historic Theatre by the League of Historic Theatres. This prestigious award recognizes that the Palace Theatre has demonstrated excellence through its significant community impact, quality of programs and services, and quality of the restoration and rehabilitation of its historic structure.
Today the Palace hosts its own professional company, various presenting acts and Palace Youth Theatre, plus Palace Teen Company, Palace Teen Apprentice Company, and the newest addition, Palace Academy. These youth and teen programs entertain, inspire and educate, and connect students and the community. In 2018, the Palace purchased and renovated the former St. George’s Church on Pine Street – now home to the Palace Youth Theatre and known as Forever Emma Studios.
Also in 2018, the Palace acquired and renovated space adjacent to the Palace Theatre to create an alternative event center known as The Spotlight Room. This innovative space hosts events, parties, performances, meetings and gatherings.
In 2019, The Palace Theatres added a fourth venue: The Rex Theatre. This versatile 300-seat venue, located one block behind the Palace, is an extraordinary space, perfect for concerts, comedy shows, community events, and theatre. Originally a printing press, The Rex has undergone a number of transformations over its 90-year lifespan. From the 1940s-1980s, the venue served as a movie theatre, and a series of nightclubs. Following extensive renovations to this dilapidated building, the Rex has become one of Manchester’s entertainment gems.
When Covid-19 struck in March 2020, the Palace Theatres canceled all upcoming events and closed all venues to the public in order to ensure the health and safety of its patrons and staff. Along with the rest of the performing arts industry around the world, our stages went dark, but the Palace Theatres remained positive and persevered through the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. In June of 2021, following off-and-on closures the Palace reopened its doors to the public while adhering to Covid safety protocols. The Palace Theatres serve as a significant contributor to New Hampshire’s creative economy and bring downtown Manchester to life as patrons fill restaurants and bars and support local stores and shops.
In a city that once hosted 22 theatres, the Palace Theatre is now the sole survivor and serves as a cornerstone of New Hampshire’s thriving arts and entertainment scene and as a vital part of Manchester’s downtown economic, cultural and social community. As we continue to thrive in our 110th year, the Palace Theatres would like to thank the many donors, sponsors, employees, and patrons who have invested in our organization. You have made our progress possible, and we look forward to many more years of producing exceptional live theatre here in Manchester, NH!
