A House of History – Manchester’s North End
Nestled in the heart of Manchester’s historic North End, this classic 1915 colonial has a rich past, originally built by an investment banker and later owned by three different doctors. The current homeowners were instantly drawn to its beautifully preserved woodwork and original flooring, which remain in remarkable condition. Their dedication to authenticity is evident in the meticulous restoration of every original brass screw, hinge, doorknob, and strike plate—each one carefully hand-polished to honor the home’s history. This passion for preservation extends throughout the home, blending old-New England charm with thoughtful modern updates.
Designed by Kathleen Costello of Granite State Cabinetry with color consultation from Deb McBride of McBride Designs, this kitchen presented unique challenges and creative solutions. A hidden laundry chute, once part of a former chimney inside the walk-in pantry, complicated plans to open the space into the dining room. Rather than remove it, the homeowners and Kathleen embraced it, covering it in thin brick and incorporating it seamlessly into the island design. Another clever adaptation can be found by the side entry, where a radiator that was too difficult to relocate was transformed into a custom cabinetry piece with hidden shoe storage—and a mitten warmer for chilly winter days. During the remodel, unexpected discoveries added to the home’s character, including layers of wallpaper revealing signatures and dates from past renovations. A charming relic from the past, a working buzzer in the kitchen (be sure to find it!), still rings up to the third-floor’s previous maid’s quarters, offering a glimpse into the home’s early days.
Though not a part of the tour, it’s fun to note that there was an old piano left behind in the basement by previous owners, which sparks curiosity—could this space have once been a hidden speakeasy during Prohibition? Stepping outside, you’ll find the pool house, originally built as a miniature version of the main house for children to play in. Today, it serves as a functional pool shed, carrying forward the home’s tradition of repurposing history while maintaining its timeless charm.

The kitchen, remodeled in 2022 by Jackie Friberg of Granite State Cabinetry, is a striking combination of style and function. Faux wood laminate cabinetry pairs elegantly with Cambria countertops that mimic modern marble, adding both warmth and sophistication. Thoughtful details shine throughout, from the charming open shelving near the pantry to the expansive window installed to enhance natural light. A bold range hood stands as a statement piece, set against a chic subway-tiled wall extending to the ceiling, framed by elegant sconces. Shayne and Jackie also refreshed the mudroom with an earthytoned herringbone tile floor. Beyond the living room, you’re led into a cozy first-floor primary suite. The Hobson Chickering House – A Colonial Cape Revival
Steeped in history, this charming Colonial Cape on Mack Hill Road dates back to circa 1748. Once home to Isaac Chickering in the 1830s, it became known as the Hobson Chickering House. Originally speculated to have been built by a shoemaker and tanner, the property once featured an attached workshop for leatherworking and shoemaking. Over the centuries, the home has undergone thoughtful expansions, including a 2008 addition by previous owners. In 2015, the current homeowners took stewardship of this historic gem, embarking on extensive renovations while preserving its character.
Among their many enhancements, they reconfigured the front-to-back hallway for a more gracious flow and built a hidden speakeasy during the pandemic—a playful nod to past eras of secret gatherings. The heart of the home, the kitchen, was beautifully remodeled by Whitney Nelson of Granite State Cabinetry, featuring timeless inset cabinetry and modern upgrades. A striking tile mural (provided by Artistic Tile) behind the range serves as a heartfelt tribute to the homeowner’s late father, blending history and personal touch into this remarkable residence. Be sure to take a peek into the laundry room, also designed by Whitney and the GSC team, which features new cabinetry for ample storage and blush pink walls.
They also expanded the property with a casita, Spanish for “little home,” skillfully built by Nate Ball Designs. This spectacular in-law unit includes its own entryway, bedroom, living space, and a full kitchen and bathroom thanks to Granite State Cabinetry. The homeowners transformed the outdoor space with lush landscaping, elegant hardscaping, and a stunning inground pool – for warm summer days when you’re barefoot under the pergola or relaxing in the courtyard.
