The Summer Guide is the perfect introduction to all the warm, breezy happy moments this season brings to our families. We love seeing all the beautiful guests and families that attend our event and the magic that fills the air. The Modern Mom Show is the most incredible event to plan months ahead during our cold Canadian winters, and as the warm air begins to fill the air, all of our plans start to become reality. Bringing everyone together at our events is the best part of it all for us! We are giddy with excitement for what’s to come at the upcoming TMMS California Experience this May 24+25 and we can’t wait to see you there!!

To give you a taste of what you can expect from us and the incredible Canadian small businesses that join us in person, we introduce to you TMMS’ Summer Guide. This catalogue channels everything TMMS, May 2024 is all about — bringing together the best Canadian small businesses under one roof in our hometown of London, ON for the entire family to enjoy!

As founders of The Modern Mom Show and parents ourselves, we are eagerly anticipating this event to shop, mingle and experience what our favourite brands have to offer us and our family! Creating this event since 2016 has been a highlight for us, and the excitement of the approaching weekend is the reward to all the planning and endless amount of work spent months before each event. Each event we look forward to shopping our favourite small businesses in person, seeing our guests smiling faces and meeting so many new amazing families. Our own kids look forward to the TMMS events, playing in the kids play area and they are always asking us what food and snacks will be there! Hi there, we’re Sarah and Meghan! We’re two sisters from Harley, ON who love fashion.

We’ve always dreamed about having our own clothing store where we could create a community for women like us who love finding trendy and sustainable pieces they can add to their closet.

Our business was inspired by our late Grandma’s little antique and linen store also called The Stillroom, which she ran alongside our Grandpa who had a barbershop in the front, for over 20 years in Otterville, ON.

SKINCARE INGREDIENTS TO AVOID DURING PREGNANCY:

Despite so many modern advancements in medicine and childbirth, more research and data still need to be conducted on humans to fully understand the effects of certain skincare ingredients on fetal development. There have been anecdotal and animal-based studies in the past that have shown negative fetal reactions to certain skincare ingredients.

Though the FDA (Food and Drug Admininstration) requires all cosmetic products to be deemed “safe” based on specific labeling, most products don’t require FDA approval to actually be sold on the market. As a result, this can make it difficult to fully understand which products are truly “safe” and which should be avoided during pregnancy.

ESSENTIAL OILS:

Not all “essential” and “natural” oils are beneficial to use during pregnancy. Some ingredients cause adverse reactions and can be harmful to mom and baby. Unwanted contractions are able to be triggered if using products containing jasmine and clary sage as active ingredients. If utilizing products with rosemary as a primary ingredient, it can sometimes cause your blood pressure to rise.

HYDROQUINONE:

A prescription product primarily used to brighten skin and reduce pigmentation. In a lot of cases, pigmentation or skin discolouration can occur during pregnancy from conditions such as melasma or chloasma. Due to the powerful absorption of hydroquinone, there has been suspicion yet no direct link that proves hydroquinone may cause birth defects.

PARABENS:

Commonly found is cosmetic products. Prenatal exposure to these hormone disruptors has been shown to contribute to side effects such as low birth weight, obesity, and in severe instances, miscarriage.

SALICYLIC ACID:

Found in many skincare items. Mostly used to treat acne and provide antiinflammatory remedies. Lower doses of this acid tend to be safer. High doses of this acid should be avoided during pregnancy.

CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS:

Oxygen one and its derivatives are commonly used YV filters in these sunscreen products. This compound has the potential to disrupt hormones and cause permanent damage to both the mother and child.

RETINOIDS:

HUGE NO-NO

Birth irregularities have been linked to the use of retinoids during pregnancy, especially those containing high doses. These include premature delivery, birth defects and even miscarriage.

Prescription medications such as tretinoin and isotretinoin contain higher levels of retinoids, while over-the-counter medications like retinol have lower levels of the ingredient.

This state of "spectatoring" prevents her from experiencing genuine pleasure and intimacy. From deep breathing exercises to sensory awareness techniques, mindfulness invites us to let go of distractions and immerse ourselves fully in the sensations of the present moment. Now, let’s prepare those lemons! Take each lemon and carefully thread it onto a BBQ skewer, adding one lemon to each side. This step not only helps to layer the lemons on top of each other but also ensures they are securely held in place. Depending on the width of your vase, you may need to trim the skewers to fit accordingly.

First things first, gather your materials. You’ll need:

18 -19 Fresh lemons (depending on the size of your vase)

BBQ skewers

Greenery (ruscus, eucalyptus greenery or use herbs like rosemary sprigs)

A vase (we used our Blanche Matte Ceramic Vase)

Step 2: Preparing the Lemons

Step 3: Layering the Lemons

Once all your lemons are skewered, it’s time to start layering. Begin by placing a lemon at the base of your vase, then stack another lemon on top, slightly off-center to create visual interest. Continue layering the lemons until your vase is filled to your liking.

Step 4: Adding Greenery

Now for the finishing touch! Take your greenery of choice and tuck it into the gaps between the lemons. This not only adds a pop of color but also softens the look of your centerpiece, giving it that fresh-from-the-garden vibe.
