There is an underrecognized group of people in the community who love what they do even without the fanfare.

The Lutcher Theater Service Guild is a non-profit organization whose main objective is to support the Lutcher Theater’s performing arts series.

Annually the theater provides entertainment to approximately 30,000 adults and children and the Guild helps to facilitate Lutcher events in a variety of ways.

Each performance at the theater is treated to a homecooked meal prepared by these volunteers. Casts look forward to the hospitality provided by these wonderful volunteers.

Together, the volunteers help create the world class experience at Lutcher Theater.

Volunteer committees include:

For a taste of one of the homecooked meals, here is a recipe which was submitted to The Orange Leader by one of the volunteers, Janice O’Dell, and was prepared for a previous show.

Patron Services: includes ushering, scanning and counting tickets, attending concessions and coatroom, and assisting with hearing devices and binocular rentals.

Hospitality: includes catering and providing “Home Town” hospitality for national and international touring company members, and technical crews. The Lutcher Theater has earned a national/international reputation as the theater known by artists to provide hometown hospitality and the feeling of “coming home to family.”

Sets, Lights, Audio and Props: includes assisting backstage with the technical aspects of a show, such as loading in, lighting, sound, props and wardrobe for most daytime children’s shows.

Administration: includes mailing material relating to board meetings, general membership meetings, and invitations to special events such as the Guild’s Christmas Dinner and Officer Installation Dinner.

Audience Development: includes distributing materials such as posters and flyers throughout Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana promoting the theater events to the public.

Membership: includes organizing and conducting the annual membership drive, collecting dues and maintaining a current membership roster for the Guild.

SLOW COOKER MONGOLIAN BEEF Serves: 4-6 Ingredients 1 ½ pounds Flank Steak ¼ cups cornstarch 2 tablespoons Olive Oil ½ teaspoons mince Garlic, Cloves ¾ cups Soy Sauce ¾ cups Water ¾ cups Brown Sugar 1 cup grated Carrots green onions, for garnish Instructions Cut flank steak into thin strips. In a ziplock bag add flank steak pieces and cornstarch.

Shake to coat.

Add olive oil, minced garlic, soy sauce, water, brown sugar and carrots to slow cooker. Stir ingredients. Add coated flank steak and stir again until coated in the sauce.

Cook for high 2-3 hours or on low 4-5 hours until cooked throughout and tender. Can serve over rice and garnish with green onions. 

By Van Wade If Orange County folks want to kick back and relax in a calm atmosphere and sip a little wine then Free State Cellars is a very warm and comforting place to go.

Free State Cellars is open where the former Piney Woods Winery was on Tejas Drive, just off of Interstate 10 in Orange.

The Swope family, of Orange, is running Free State Cellars so people can have a wonderful family experience to relax and enjoy some wine and amazing scenery.

The winery is open on Thursdays from 1 p.m.7 p.m., Fridays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Their wines are sold by the bottle or the glass.

Free State also offers sangrias that chills the wine into adult-like slushees.

The Piney Woods Winery was cranked up in 1985 by Alfred Flies, who planted acres of vines and made wonderful fruit wines. Flies

passed away in 2015 at 92 and his family did not want to continue the winery.

That is when the Swope family decided to invest in starting their own winery. They became open to the public in early May and have attracted some nice crowds as people are becoming aware of how beautiful and tranquil the setting is, along with – of course – the great tasting wine.

You can elevate your visit by reserving a Freer State Encounter in the beautiful outdoor area.

Each Encounter offers a different sensory immersion to ensure that the visit is unforgettable.

Shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in the early 1800s, the eastern border between Texas and Spain was in dispute.

The neutral ground became to be known as “No Man’s Land,” and it was between the Sabine River and Calcasieu River. The area on the west side of the Sabine, which later became Orange County, was a place where outlaws hid.

Jean Lafitte, a famous pirate, ran ships up Sabine Lake and the Sabine River.

The moss-draped swamps on the TexasLouisiana border sheltered the 40-mile stretch of “No Man’s Land”, which was also known as the Free State of the Sabine.

Treasures were buried and legends were forged and eventually the independence of the Texas nation was born.

MOODY GARDENS IDEAL FOR FAMILY DAY TRIPS, welcomes Orange County for upcoming holidays

Photos courtesy of Moody Gardens This holiday season, Moody Gardens welcomes Cirque Joyeux to its convention center, offering one-hour live cirque performances along with dinner. A ticket also includes admission to the Festival of Lights.

The holiday season is quickly barreling towards us, and Orange County, Texas is not exempt from all the end-of-the-year family fun, especially after the year of hard work the community has endured.

Once all the fun to be had in Orange is crossed off the list, it doesn’t have to stop there. One of the best family-friendly adventures in Texas is well-within reach for families looking for a new holiday tradition, or planning something different this year.

“Moody Gardens has so many things to appeal to everyone in the family,” said Alexis Shelly, public relations coordinator with Moody Gardens.

This year, the park will celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

Exhibits designed to educate the young, and young-at-heart, continue year-round and include attractions like the aquarium and rainforest pyramids, interactive 3D theater experiences, a ropes course, zip line and a children’s discovery museum.

“From the Aquarium and Rainforest Pyramids that are open year round to ICE LAND and the Festival of Lights open for the holiday season, I always say that if there are five people in the car, you can all pile out and go five different directions when you come to Moody Gardens,” Shelly said.

In October, the gardens become ghostly as Skeletown, an opportunity to learn all about bones, takes over the Discovery Pyramid beginning Oct. 5.

The Rainforest Pyramid transforms to the Reignforest of Terror Oct. 12, 19 and 26, a

theatrical haunted tour that highlights scary threats animals face in the wild.

The Ghostly Gardens Film Festival and a showing of “Happy Family 4D” will run Oct. 12, 19 and 26 at the park’s theaters.

On Nov. 16, showings of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – An Interactive Adventure” will begin in the Audience Recognition Theater.

During the holiday season, Moody Gardens comes even more alive with eight additional holiday exhibits including photos with Santa, train rides, an arctic slide, ice skating, a festival of lights and theater experiences.

Ice Land: Christmas Around the World will exhibit different Christmas celebrations around the world and will feature a “Live Ice Land Camera” to check in on Christmas globally.

The 18th Annual Festival of Lights and ICE LAND: Christmas Around the World kick off simultaneously on Nov. 16 and run until Jan. 12. The festival is said to be the Gulf Coasts’ largest holiday lighting event, and includes Santa’s Workshop and possibly a visit from Santa himself.

“Moody Gardens is one of the things that turns Galveston into the ‘Winter Wonder Island,’” Shelly said. “It is a great place to come and visit with your family to get into the holiday spirit, whether that holiday is Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas.”

Whether you enjoy taking the ferry or go around to avoid the hassle, Moody Gardens is an easy two-hour trip from Orange County.

Shelly says the best way to make a day-trip to Moody Gardens from Orange County “worth it,” is to purchase a $70 one-day value pass so everyone on the trip gains admission to all of the attractions.

Once in Galveston, families can stick solely to the Moody Gardens experience or wrap up the day trip with an early supper near the beach before heading home. Families have no chance of running out of fun things to do at Moody Gardens or on Galveston Island.

Moody Gardens is open every single day of the year, with normal operating hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Located at One Hope Road in Galveston, Texas, Moody Gardens, a one-day value pass for one person costs $70 and includes admission to most exhibits. Individual passes may be purchased for specific exhibits, and two-day value passes are also available.

DIABETES: Angels Care provides tips on how to prevent and take control of the disease

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects more than 12 million people who are 65 years and older, so chances are high that many seniors in our community have the disease or at least know someone with it. Diabetes is characterized by having too much glucose, or sugar, in the blood. Some sugar in the blood is okay, but too much sugar is dangerous.

Our bodies get glucose – or sugar – primarily from the foods we eat. If our body works the way it should, glucose moves from our bloodstream into our cells where it is converted into energy. Insulin is a hormone that helps facilitate this process. Unfortunately, our body doesn’t always work the way we want it to.

Diabetes sets in when we don’t make enough insulin or the insulin doesn’t work the way it should, and too much sugar stays in the blood.

Diabetes can cause serious damage to the body if not managed properly, contributing to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, and amputation.

In fact, nearly 30 million people who have diabetes as a primary condition need emergency care, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It’s a disease that requires a tremendous amount of monitoring and self-care.

Following is more information about the types of Diabetes, tips on how to prevent the disease, as well as management strategies if you or a loved one already have or have been diagnosed with Diabetes so that you can take control of it, avoid emergency care, and enjoy an active, independent lifestyle.

TYPES OF DIABETES With type 1 diabetes, the body does not make insulin. A person who has type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to live. Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 5 to 10 percent of diagnosed diabetes in the United States, according to

the National Institutes of Health. It develops most often in children and young adults but can appear at any age. Symptoms may include increased thirst and urination, constant hunger, weight loss, blurred vision, and extreme fatigue. If not diagnosed and treated with insulin, a person with type 1 diabetes can lapse into a life-threatening diabetic coma. We have no control over this type of diabetes.

With type 2 diabetes, which is the more common type, the body does not make or use insulin well. Often by making healthier lifestyle choices, such as losing weight or exercising or eating healthier foods, we can keep the disease from worsening and damaging our bodies.

Type 2 diabetes is most often associated with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, previous history of gestational diabetes, physical inactivity, and certain ethnicities.

About 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, reports the National Institutes of Health.

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes are similar to those of type 1 diabetes, but they develop gradually.

Symptoms may include fatigue, frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger, weight loss, blurred vision, and slow healing of wounds or sores. Some people have no symptoms.

PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES The good news is that there is a lot that can be done to prevent or delay diabetes.

Studies show that people can lower their risk of developing diabetes by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight through diet and exercise. In fact, a major study of more than 3,000 people with prediabetes found that diet and exercise resulting in a 5 to 7 percent

weight loss (that’s about 10 to 14 pounds in a person who weighs 200 pounds) lowered the incidence of type 2 diabetes by nearly 60 percent. Study participants lost weight by cutting fat and calories in their diet and by exercising at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Walking was theexercise of choice.

• Exercise. Choose an activity you enjoy (such as walking or swimming) and do it for about 30 minutes a day most days of the week.

Check with your health care provider before starting an exercise program.

• Eat healthy. Load up on fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy sources, and lean protein.

Incorporate more fish, beans, peas, nuts and seeds into your diet and experiment with seasonings such as cinnamon.

• Lose weight if needed. Just a 5 percent weight loss is proven to help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

• Stay on top of your regular screenings, including eye exams. Know your blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and BMI. • Take medications for diabetes and other chronic conditions as prescribed by your health care provider.

• Quit smoking. It increases your risk of diabetes and makes it more difficult to manage the disease if you have it.

Exercise, a healthy diet and weight loss play a tremendous role in helping someone prevent or manage their diabetes. The key is to make gradual lifestyle changes.

HER FAMILY, HER FAITH

F

Family is a big part of Ann Hinds life.

“On my eleventh birthday my mother passed away. I was the 15th child in a family of 16 children,” Ann Hinds said. “My oldest sister raised my three youngest siblings and me. My father ran the family liquor store, restaurant and bar on Houston Avenue in Port Arthur.

He provided well for our family. I am the only remaining survivor of my immediate family.”

Those early years had a huge impact on Ann’s life. She developed a strong sense of the importance of faith and family.

Ethan and Ann Hinds arrived in Orange in 1967 with four boys and a desire to start a family business.

“We lived in a rented home on Park Street, a few doors down from Mrs. Boehme who worked at The Orange Leader. Her husband died at an early age,” Ann said. “She had a pile of boys. They had paper routes. We used to help them roll papers when we were young.”

Richard is one of three surviving sons. He and Doyle Hinds work in the family business.

They have another brother, David, in business on his own.

“My parents went straight from home to work and back home. They did not spend a lot of time out on the town. They came here with four boys and started a small business. Dad did not tolerate goofing off. Family meant a lot to them. They spent time with us at motorcycle races, sporting events and kept us out of trouble in our teen years,” Richard Hinds said.

Ann’s faith is very important to her, something she gained at an early age.

“My older sister raised us to go to church every morning before school. My faith became important to me. I learned how to turn to the Lord from a young age,” Ann said.

Her faith sustained her when her son died at age 20.

Darren Hinds was hunting that morning.

The family was going to the State Fair in Beaumont. Ann decided not to go. Darren and his girlfriend went to a shooting range. A ricocheted bullet shot by another marksman struck Darren and killed him. Ann holds no hard feelings. Her faith has enabled her to deal with the loss.

She has good memories of time spent with her childhood friend.

“I grew up with Esther Benoit. Me and Chris Leigh [Dal Sasso] and Esther modeled for Dorothy’s Boutique when we were young. We wore replicas of the dresses worn on the show Dallas. We were good friends,” Ann said.

Holidays are family events in the Hinds home.

Ann has good memories of preparing the tables and food and having kids, grand kids and great grandkids over for Easter lunch after church. She has seven grandkids and eleven great grandkids.

“I never forget their birthdays,” Ann said. “My boys participated in sports growing up. I have a grandson who played football at LSU when they won a national championship. Nick Saban was the coach. I have had season tickets to LSU games since.”

Ann celebrated her 80th birthday in 2018.

It was a grand event held at her son David’s home. Her family and friends were all invited.

One of her nieces arranged 15 white roses and one red rose commemorating her and her siblings. Another niece embossed a photo of her in her Mardi Gras outfit on a bottle of wine. It was a special event for Ann with family and friends and a tribute to her She admits working in a family business can be a challenge.

If you speak with her about her life’s adventure you can’t help but come away with the realization she loves what she does and loves those she does it with.

Building fences has been a part of her life since 1967.

She has seen her local company emerge from a small town provider of chain link fences to a large scale provider of perimeter security for strategic and high profile sites throughout the United States.

It has been a joint effort begun by her and her husband Ethan with multiple family members at her side moving the company forward. 

1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Place the squash halves in a large microwave-safe bowl with 1/4 cup water; cover loosely with plastic wrap. Microwave until fork-tender, about 15 minutes.

Add the enchilada sauce and chicken. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce slightly thickens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the cilantro and season with salt and pepper.

CELEBRATES 40 YEARS

Frances Ann Lutcher, with her love of arts and culture, inspired the construction of a new theater in Orange.

life and community affairs. They enjoyed traveling to Chicago, New York, and Europe.

One of Frances Ann’s passions was the theater.

She frequently patronized Orange’s early theaters. After one of Orange’s opera houses burned in 1914, Frances contributed over $8,000 to its replacement. Drawings by Jean H. Duffy of New Orleans for an interior design of the opera house remain among her papers.

The same theater, which opened on February 7, 1980 to a sold-out performance by Liberace, is celebrating 40 years of world-class performing arts in Orange.

Frances Ann Robinson was born to a Philadelphia tailor in 1840. Her family moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 1857 where she met Henry Jacob Lutcher. The two eloped in January of 1858 when she was just seventeen years old.

Their family quickly grew to include two daughters, Miriam and Carrie. Henry, Frances and the girls all worked in a family butcher shop. A profitable deal selling cattle to fellow butchers allowed Henry to invest in a lumber venture and the family left the butcher business behind.

The lumber industry grew and eventually the Lutcher & Moore Lumber Company needed a new source of timber. Seeking new strands of pine trees, they found them in East Texas along the Sabine River. The river lead to the Gulf and a worldwide market for their products. The company relocated to Orange.

Frances Ann attended a variety of performances over the years. Her ticket purchases included shows like Happy Hooligan, Jewel of Asia, and Taming of the Shrew among others. She also enjoyed shows while on holiday and abroad. In 1924 at the age of 84, Frances Ann Lutcher passed away while in New York City.

Frances Ann joined her husband in Texas in 1877. While she no longer worked in the family business, she often gave advice to her husband. Henry once said “she has steered me clear of many a dangerous snag.” Frances and her daughters became active in Orange social

The Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation began building a new theater in the 1970s, and knew that few would have enjoyed it like Frances Ann. A special Ribbon Cutting hosted by the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce will be held at the theater at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 707 Main Street in Orange, to celebrate the beginning of the 40th season for the Frances Ann Lutcher Theater.

Lucy Terry never worked in the food industry, yet on Dec. 19, 2000, the doors opened for “Lucy’s Café” wafting scents of sweet, savory delights across Orange. Knowing nothing about the business end of edible delights, Lucy began her café journey after quitting her previous job to spend more time with her family.

“I have always loved cooking and loved coming together with family and friends around a table,” Lucy said. “My parents always made time to brings us all together at night to talk about our day and to feel loved.”

For Lucy, cooking and serving people make her happy and it seems to, as she says, “make others happy as well.” “(Everything) goes back to my Mom’s love of cooking and seeing her...make things for others,” she said of her mom, Shirley Parker.

“Seeing that as a little girl and still watching her do that today has put a special something in my heart that will probably have me doing that for the rest of my life!”

Growing up she wanted to be a nurse like her mother. However, she “didn’t have the stomach for the sights and smells.”

“I went to college, taking basic courses, because I hadn’t decided on what I would do. Looking back the sign that I would end up in the food industry might have been one semester while in college I sold my books to go out to dinner,” Lucy said. “Yep! I would say that was a sign.”

Lucy said she likes to say she was “homeschooled” when it comes to cooking.

“I was one of five kids that helped out at home and was taught by my mom, who cooked a hot meal every day after work, to have a sitdown dinner...as a family,” Lucy said. “Seeing that as a little girl and still watching her do

that today has put a special something in my heart that will probably have me doing that for the rest of my life!”

Lucy laughed when asked about where she and the Café would go, “I usually only take it a day at a time, but I am excited to say we will be making some changes soon that people will want to be on the lookout for. I can’t reveal just yet. But it should happen before the end of the year.”

She said to stay tuned to know more.

“I see now that the cafe is not only a place to come and have great food but also a place to meet old friends, make new friends and to celebrate and comfort people of all ages. I strive to have an atmosphere that you can come to dine alone yet not feel alone,” she said.

Always watching cooking shows, reading cookbooks, or on the internet watching “howto” videos, Lucy works hard to keep up with new trends and ideas.

Recently “Lucy’s Café” had a chef visit to help give them new ideas in the kitchen.

“I listen to feedback from customers of mine.”

She went on, “When people talk about what they like or don’t like at a restaurant - it’s one of the best ways to learn for me. Well, that and eating out! You can learn a lot just by doing that. Not only about different foods that are out there, but also what to do and what not to do in a restaurant.”

Lucy couldn’t think of a better place to open her shop than Orange.

“It’s Texas, yet it’s on the edge of Louisiana!” she said rather enthusiastically. “Two states with some of the best food in the world

and some of the friendliest people... Not to mention people from all overdrive right through (here) on I-10 traveling.”

Lucy said the café has been overwhelmed with how Orange and the surrounding area have shown their “support and love for us.”

Small Bites is now at Lucy’s. Small Bites carries on the tradition of cooking and is owned by Lucy’s daughter, Callie Perry.

WHY I LOVE I

ORANGE COUNTY

I’m proud to say I’ve lived my entire life in Orange County. I graduated from Orangefield high school then moved to the Little Cypress area over 40 years ago. My family on the Scales side as well as the Mansfield side boasts deep roots in our community.

I hear folks say there’s nothing to do in our area. In my opinion, that’s not true. We have the beauty of everything from waterways to tall pine trees. We have brackish water which means fishermen have the opportunity to catch everything from perch to redfish to bass to gar…a fisherman’s delight.

Thanks to Lamar Orange for continuing to breathe life back into our downtown Orange area. The Lutcher Theatre is a mainstay and each season brings in some wonderful productions. The Stark Museum and W.H. Stark House brings tourists to our area. We have Shangri La which is an outstanding wildlife and vegetation area that regularly hosts community events; many are free to the public.

We have Interstate 10 that runs right thru our county which is being upgraded right now.

I’m so thankful that the train depot was saved and is now renovated. It’s now a wonderful place for events. I’m proud to say I was one of three General coordinators for the Lions Den playground. It’s a 20-year-old playground that was built “barn raising” style by many dedicated members of our community who understood the need for a community playground that is still full of children having fun every weekend. I’m proud to say it’s being considered for renovation.

I’m familiar with many of our churches in Orange County. In my opinion they’re second to none. My home church growing up was Orangefield First Baptist. My husband Rusty and I now worship regularly at Cowboy Church of Orange County which is a nontraditional church that focuses on reaching people who have a connection to the Western heritage or cowboy culture.

I’m proud to say we have some first-class rodeo arenas in our county, one being T2 on Old Peveto Road. Owners Chad and Krissy are generous and always willing to listen to new ideas from the Chamber of Commerce, EDC, as well as concerned individuals. They regularly host events for the Cowboy Church of Orange County, Special Angels Rodeo, the Orange County Livestock Show and other events.

We have many reputable civic organizations in our area. One being the Lions Club. Rusty and I belong to the Orange Lions Club but our county proudly has the LCM Lions, Bridge City Lions, Orange Noon Lions and Vidor Lions Clubs. Our biggest event is the Orange Lions Clubs Charity Carnival. It’s often voted best community event in the Orange Leader best of the best poll. We are celebrating our 79th carnival this year.

Monies raised from this annual event pays for eyeglasses, food baskets at Christmas time and other community projects. We serve!! Nearly every civic organization in our community sponsors a community event, the Kiwanis Christmas Parade, the Bridge City Chamber Christmas Parade, CVB’s Art in the Park, among others.

The cities in the county all sponsor events, Pinehurst Labor Day Picnic, Vidor Barbecue Festival just to mention a couple.

If you enjoy good music, Orange County has some of the most talented folks you’ll ever meet. Britt Godwin is home grown talent but he’s not alone, there are many talented singers, musicians, and songwriters that are featured often at local clubs, festivals and events.

Rusty and I enjoy our local restaurants. I think we’re blessed with a variety so there’s something for everybody.

I don’t always completely agree with our county and different cities leadership, but I respect the fact that they sincerely continue to work on improvements to make Orange County a better place to live.

There are a few downfalls to Orange County.

Hurricanes, mosquitoes and lovebugs to name a few but I think the beauty of Orange County and the hospitality of most of the people in our community outweigh what downfalls we experience.

God continues to bless our area with beautiful scenery that’s always free to enjoy so Rusty and I can always find something to do.

So, as I said earlier, I don’t agree with those who complain that there’s nothing to do here.

I know I didn’t mention everything we have but I love Orange County because the county is diversified, it’s hometown yet there’s some high-class culture here as well. We have big time pro rodeos that draw some of the best professional cowboys anywhere. Orange County continues to produce quality athletes that regularly go on to college and pro status.

I think there’s something for everybody.

I’ve traveled extensively in Texas, other states and a little bit out of the country but I’ve never found a place I’d rather live than here.

I’ll always be proud that I’m from Orange County Texas. 
