Jumping Bean Coffee Shop

Brings joy to a community – and receives more in return

Jodie Cates’ face lights up as she talks about her hometown of Orange, and the coffee shop that serves it.

Reopened under her ownership in November 2017, she said she wanted the kids to have something, and that her heart is people.

Jodie bought the place because she was praying about another girl that was opening it. When that girl didn’t open it, Jodie felt she had to. Her son came quite a bit when it was open before, and she felt that it had been a safe place for her son; she liked the fact that the-then owner took care of him there and would let her know when something was up – anything that would be troubling him. Now, as then, kids come here and when they have problems she hears about it.

“I can choose to accelerate the situation or smother the situation, so if the kids come over and something’s going on, I ask questions,” she says.

To her, the biggest benefit of running Jumping Bean is working with her community and the kids. She says some kids are still struggling from the storm, some of whom are still displaced. She prays about those kids, and says they are a very big part of the coffee shop.

“They know they have a voice here, whether good times, bad times. Sometimes kids get pushed aside,” She also emphasizes the other issues the kids are still dealing with over the last few months - suicides and car accidents involving classmates.

As she and her husband have what she called a “blended family” – five teenagers between them – she stresses the importance of being a positive role model to other kids because she’d want someone to be a good role model to hers.

Raised in Deweyville but growing up around Orange, she says Jumping Bean to her is a faith-based service center, not just a coffee shop.

to be part of it, a launch pad for the Lord,” she notes the sign that hangs above the front door. “The sign above the door reads “J-O-Y” – Jesus, Others and Yourself. And that is the only way you’re going to find joy. Happiness is short-lived.”

A lot of people think that Jumping Bean is strictly coffee, but there is so much more than just coffee. Her gift shop features décor items made by local crafters, and the shirts for sale in the shop support a local women’s ministry. She has bibles laying around, free for the taking.

There are coffee mugs for sale, and she makes balloon bouquets and gift baskets, which she can customize.

Her new mini-Bundt cakes are a hit, and she still makes the chocolate-covered strawberries every Valentine’s Day. She chose to keep a lot of traditions the shop previously provided, including using many of the same suppliers.

She is also helping a young lady with centerpieces for her baby shower. She says it’ because it’s exciting to celebrate other peoples’ milestones. A local book club meets here, as well as a bible study group. Groups are welcome.

Speaking of helping others, she mentions a woman who works for her. Not just an employee but a friend, whose home was nearly completely submerged in the Harvey floodwaters.

“She has a heart to serve,” Jodie says. “She was helping me with the coffee shop before she was even on the payroll.”

As her employee got denied assistance from FEMA, Jodie is working with others to soon surprise her with sheetrock and insulation in her home – providing it and installing it. As Jodie was talking to a local church about getting her some help, another customer overheard her.

It turned out the customer was a contractor, and he offered her the supplies.

“That has been our biggest excitement is to see this town pull together.”

“Even when adults come in, and they talk about the negative, we seek the positive. I’ve seen a lot of heartbroken people but at the same time I’ve seen them want to do better, want to rebuild and as a result I want to help them anyway that I can.”

“We see a lot of positive. When we first opened there was a church from Carthage. This was their meeting place and they would distribute furniture. And it grew, and we had to put it in the school parking lot because it went from two truckloads to six cargo trucks. They gave it away for free. That started a lot of the ministry work here - that was the door that opened it.”

She taps on the table top of where we sit. “This was one of theirs.” She points to the couches. “Those were theirs.”

“Anything that God wants to use this building for I want it to be here. This is my town. These people I see daily, I want to be involved, share their milestones.”

Asked if she feels optimistic about people wanting to rebuild and stay here in Orange, she says, “Yes, because this is their town, they know the people, they know the area, they’ve built memories here and I see a lot of people who want to continue to build memories here.”

Located just outside the city limits on Highway 87, next to Domino’s pizza and across from Little Cypress Mauriceville High School, Jumping Bean has long been a favorite of many locals. Not only do they serve coffee drinks, but ‘frappes’, which can be made with or without coffee and have the consistency of milkshakes - Italian sodas (liquid snow cones, she says), muffins, cupcakes, cheesecake bites and many other desserts. A light breakfast including sausage, egg, cheese biscuits, and bagels is available every day and lunch is every day but Saturdays, and includes soups, casseroles and sandwiches.

Hours are Mondays through Fridays, 6:30 a.m. to 6: 00 p.m., except for Wednesdays, which are 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and they are closed on Sundays.

International Paper looks back on 50 years, sets sights on the future

At International Paper’s Orange Containerboard Mill, we are proud of who we are, what we do and how we do it. For 50 years, we have worked to establish more than just a successful operation. We’ve built families, friendships, community relationships and a legacy of excellence rooted in a firm foundation of doing the right things, the right ways, for the right reasons – all the time. Hiring & Training: Like most industries, our Orange Mill projects 50 percent of our maintenance and operations team members will retire over the next 10 years, taking a wealth of knowledge and experience with them.

Attracting highly engaged team members who are ready to learn and grow – personally and professionally – has never been more important.

Community Partnerships: We want to be more than just an employer. We have a rich history and close ties to our community. Our teammates volunteer at dozens of organizations across Southeast Texas and the mill gives more than $300,000 in financial support each year to local schools and non-profits through donations, grants and our annual United Way campaign. Our team members

serve as school board members, non-profit board members and volunteers, and support local feeding programs throughout the community. Our team members and retirees were also heavily involved in community relief efforts following Hurricane Harvey.

Last year, International Paper, through its IP Foundation, expanded its community support by identifying hunger, health and wellness, literacy and education and disaster relief as its signature causes.

“We will always work to make our communities better,” Barr said. “For 50 years, our community partners have supported the Orange Mill, and it’s our honor to support them in return.”

For 50 years, we have been proud to call this community home.

“I’ve worked all over the country in my 28-year career with IP and I know there is something different about Orange,” Barr says. “This is a family, a legacy. As we look back on 50 years, we will work to sustain that progress and do whatever we can to secure our future. Keeping you retired

“Can I retire? When?”

“Can I stay retired without cutting back or running out of money?”

“Can I make good returns with less risk? With no risk?”

These are the most common questions Advanced Financial Services has answered for their clients for the last 28 years. First from their office in Jasper, then a second office in Orange across from LC-M High School opened in 2016, now this year opening a third location in Silsbee.

“In my 40 years as a CPA, the fundamentals have not changed when it comes to retirement or conservative investing,” says Cam Monroe, CPA, who founded AFS 28 years ago. “You can reduce or eliminate risk, while still making good returns.”

Safety is only as good as the entity offering the guaranty. Who or what is backing up your money? How easy is it to get if things go wrong? These questions are critical.

In the late 1980s some of Monroe’s CPA clients, many of them employees at Dupont, came to him with questions about a new government program called the 401(k).

Elaine Meyers began The Horseman’s Store in 1969 using a cigar box for a cash register.

As the story goes, she and her staff were preparing for their grand opening when customers began to knock on the door.

They couldn’t wait for the official opening.

Her wares were in demand. Somewhat unprepared, but eager to serve her customers, Meyers opened the doors and used the only thing she had for a cash register, a cigar box.

The Horseman’s Store initially offered western wear and horse tack supplying local cowpokes with bits, bridles, saddles and boots.

Meyers had big plans.

Today The Horseman’s Store is much more. The Orange store is at the original location but is now more than double the original size. Stores have been added in Port Arthur, two locations in Houston and one in Gonzalez, Louisiana. The Horseman’s Store also operates four ‘shoe trucks’, which service locations from San Antonio to Mississippi supplying safety attire and work boots to thousands of workers.

Safety boots, fire retardant clothing, western boots and clothing, jewelry, fashion accessories and much more are avail-

able to equip you for the work place or after hours gathering.

“She would go out of her way to help people, even total strangers,” said District Manager Bob Dickerson. “She might be strict, but she was always fair.”

Meyers was known for her involvement in the community. She served her community by being involved with the City of Orange Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce and was a founding member of Trinity Baptist Church. She put her heart and soul into the community she loved.

As The Horseman’s Store grew, Meyers surrounded herself with the team to move forward and fuel the growth. In the late eighties, Gordon Worlow came on board, who now presides as President / CEO of the companies. The corporate office for all Meyers companies is located in Orange where she put together a strong team to move forward in the future.

First Financial Bank honored Meyers in May 2016 with the coveted Athena Award for her reputation as a local entrepreneur while recognizing her courage and perseverance.

Meyers’ was a big thinker and her legacy is evidence she knew how to make it happen. She is truly missed, but her Horseman’s Store legacy lives on.

Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center is one of Southeast Texas’ most beloved outdoor destinations with its richly adorned gardens, children’s interactive opportunities, quiet spots for relaxing, and many opportunities to observe the wonders of the natural world.

United Way, a blessing for Orange residents

A whole lot of Orange County residents saw the “worst of times” during Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath.

However, the United Way of Orange brought back a “spark of life and hope” for many over the days and months afterwards.

Recovering from such a devastating storm can have many steps in trying to move onward and upward and the United Way has been there every step of the way.

The United Way of Orange, led by President and CEO Maureen McAllister, accomplished so many amazing things during the recovery effort, both on the scene and behind the scene, helping several local agencies.

“We were so thrilled to all of the people and groups that contributed to Orange County in the aftermath of Harvey,” said McAllister. “So many people rallied together from all across the country to help our needs, from businesses, organizations and individuals. People just wanted to help anyway they possibly could and it was a blessing.”

They helped provide water, food, supplies and shelter. United Way was vital as well, getting people back on their feet as many groups across the country used the United Way as a main contact as far as getting people and supplies down to Orange County for help.

The United Way began fielding calls from interested parties throughout the country, wanting to enable their assistance.

The United Way received $188,000 InKind donations and as of Jan. 25, the United Way of Orange County had received approximately $325,000 in Harvey relief. The United Way distributed a lot of the funds to local agencies that assisted individuals with disaster relief including The Salvation Army, Friends Helping Friends, Orange Christian Services and Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas.

Relief supplies – aided by the United Way of Orange – were supplied by the likes of the Kiwanis Club of Florida, Planet Fitness in Southwest Louisiana, Chevrolet in Georgia, St. Landry Evangeline United Way, Howell Furniture and Ashley Home Store, Middle School Student and Community in New York, individuals and business owners in Ohio, and several other United Ways across the country.

was tremendous,” said McAllister, who was named the 2017 Greater Orange Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year and the United Way was named Non-profit of the Year. “Not only did groups send up a ton of supplies throughout it all, many of them came down to lend a hand. They had such a spirit and helped lift the spirits of so many people in Orange County. And with all that, we’ve been able to create so many lasting relationships with people we never heard of until August and September of last year.”

The United Way received help from Howell Furniture and Ashley Home Store, who donated 150 pieces of furniture, over 50 twin mattresses and 20 twin rails and foundations that was able to assist 62 families.

“About 65 percent of homes throughout Orange County received flood damage from the storm and the majority of people simply had no flood insurance,” said McAllister. “Working together, the recovery has moved forward. That’s one thing that is beautiful about our area, when something like this happens, we always tend to rally around each other and support one another and get everyone back on track.”

They also set up comfort care kits for children that included coloring books, stuffed animals and things to help a child have something of their own. They were given to children at Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club and children of Samaritan Counseling CenVan Wade/The Orange Leader ter of Southeast Texas.

those items was a sight to see,” said McAllister. “So many adults were busy, cleaning out their homes, looking for assistance, still trying to get to their jobs and sometimes people forget that the kids are going through it too, but it was tough on them as well and to put some smiles on those young faces was special.”

The United Way has also used grant funds to purchase sheetrock for homeowners.

The United Way continued to help the folks of Orange County despite having its own office suffer damage from Harvey.

They actually operated out of First Financial Bank for months before returning to their office at 1506 West Park Avenue in early February.

“First Financial Bank was tremendous in allowing us and several other local businesses and non-profit groups,” said McAllister. “We’re so grateful for that.”

The United Way has carried on with delivering to the residents of Orange and continues to seek funding from fund-raising campaigns.

The United Way presented Pete’s Dueling Pianos at the VFW in February with rave reviews.

Dueling pianos, also known as ‘sing-along’, is a form of entertainment, usually on stage with two grand pianos, each played by a professional piano player who sings and entertains with lots of humor and audience participation.

There was a silent auction and auction at the event.

The United Way was also busy at the Bassmasters Tournament, helping folks park their vehicles and meeting and greeting out-of-towners with smiles.

The United Way is a non-profit and the funds it receives each year comes from local companies and individuals as they kickoff off a new fund-raising campaign each year.

“Without the proper funding we can only go so far and the Orange-area has been fantastic over the years,” said McAllister. “With people, either through the companies they work for or individually donating, that’s how we survive and we’re grateful. We work with 22 partner agencies who help residents of Orange County improve their health, education and financial stability. We look forward to many more years trying to help people and giving them hope, that’s what we strive to do daily.”

Orange Economic Development attracting new businesses while retaining established companies

Checking the numbers is part of the process for selecting the best site for a new investment.

Among the numbers, along with population, average income, along with miles from highway, railroad and waterways is also the gross sales and the amount subject to state tax.

Those numbers have increased 11 times out of the last 14 years for the city of Orange, showing potential investors the community supports local businesses.

“A prospect investor considering expansion or a new project will look at how residents are supporting the local business industry,” City of Orange Director of Economic Development Jay Trahan said.

Another number is the household average income. For Orange, a household average income is $54, 000 - $55,000.

“That is strong,” Trahan said. “The retention of major employers such as Cloeren, the industries on Chemical Row and International Paper is huge.”

By supporting local business, it gives the city a competitive edge in securing new investors in the area.

“To attract new investors or expansion the foundation is the current companies the community supports,” Trahan said.

With a major event, such as the storm the area experienced in August 2017, there is a spike in spending as insurance and FEMA funds are used to help in the recovery rebuilding.

“It benefits several entities local, state and city,” Trahan said. “The key is retention of businesses, for example International Paper.”

One area targeted for economic development is the 256 acres known as Eagle Point.

The Orange Economic Development Corporation (EDC) recently approved a six-month extension for Boulevard construction, a $650,000 project.

First State Bank, a new bank, choose Orange as home for its corporate office.

The estimated $3 million project currently under construction near MLK and Interstate 10, has also created 50-60 jobs.

The new construction for the new home for First Financial Bank, also currently under construction, is also a sign of economic growth for the city.

“We are working with Shaun LiCatino,” Trahan said of the downtown business. “He has a vision of expanding at the current location. He is working on the plans for the 2018 project.”

The Property is anchored by Market Basket, a dominant grocery store chain in east Texas and southwest Louisiana headquartered nearby. Other tenants include Stage Stores, Pizza Hut and an Exxon/Mobil convenience market.’

“They have an improvement plan and an architectural plan,” Trahan said. “New tenants, new facade.”

Trahan also added two or three retail franchises are considering the location across the street from Modica Bros. on 16th Street.

“We hope to move forward once the Interstate 19 project is further along,” Trahan said.

New businesses are not the only sign of economic growth, but also residential development.

ITEX management is considering the next phase of residential development near Cypresswood Crossing on State Hwy. 87 in Orange.

“We are planning 40 single family lots,” President of The ITEX Group Chris Akbari said. “The area did not flood. We have been successful selling and building homes there. We will confident we will sell more high quality homes there.”

Another developer, from the Dallas area, is considering a location targeting the senior community.

“This is not an assisted living project,” Jay Trahan said. “This is for independent seniors.”

Trahan said he is encouraged with the amount of interest the city is generating among investors.

“The interest is encouraging and continues to this day,” Trahan said. “From corporate contacts, site selectors, and project managers are targeting the city of Orange for new projects.”

With signs of new businesses throughout the county, Orange County Economic Development (EDC) Director Jessica Hill has shown the changes in the direction the organization has made to better serve the county.

When the community was asked to participate in a poll and feedback, retail was among the highest demand.

The county hired a retail consultant to assist in creating a strategic plan for retail recruitment.

With the county having a projected growth rate of 2.4 percent between 2017-2022, the population could increase from 84,000 to 99,500 in the next few years. More population increases the demand and need for local retail businesses.

“We asked them to look at the county as a single market,” Hill said. “They are exited about the new HEB, Eaglepoint and the businesses locating in Vidor and Bridge City.”

The cities of Pinehurst and Orange are also the locations of two new Burger Kings in the area.

Currently in the ‘pipeline’, are $20 billion projects for Orange County.

As with the city EDC, Orange County EDC is also focused on retaining the current businesses in the area.

In November, to help local businesses in the recovery process, the corporation begun issuing funds to small businesses under its Harvey Small Business Disaster Recovery Grant program. Qualified Orange County businesses received a $5,000 grant to assist with recovery efforts.

The $200,000 in available funds was made available in part through the reallocation of the Economic Development Corporation’s restricted funds.

“I wish we could do more”, Hill said in a press released issued at the time.. “There are 108 businesses we have not be able to assist and even more that did not apply. I am extremely thankful for the patience and cooperation of all those who submitted applications and served on the review committee. We have a long road of recovery ahead.”

Orange County has shown a significant increase in Gross Sales and the amount subject to State Sales Tax in 11 of the past 14 years.

“If you take the numbers at face value, it shows more dollars spent locally,” Hill said. “It has a multiplier effect in the community. Local residents support local family.”

It also allows entities to function more efficiently, according to Hill.

The multiplier effect, according to dictionary.com, is the effect in economics in which an increase in spending produces an increase in national income and consumption greater than the initial amount spent. For example, if a corporation builds a factory, it will employ construction workers and their suppliers as well as those who work

in the factory. Indirectly, the new factory will stimulate employment in laundries, restaurants, and service industries in the factory’s vicinity.

Larger industries are still being pursued as well, including maintaining retention of current industries such as Jefferson Gulf Coast Energy Partners.

Jefferson Energy and affiliates have invested over $350 million dollars in the facility since 2012.

Commissioners Court and Orange County EDC approved a Chapter 381 abatement agreement, in February, with Jefferson Gulf Coast Energy Partners, LLC to invest $150,000,000 in the expansion of its trans-load fa-

cility in Orange County.

The parties have agreed to 10-year, 100-percent property tax abatement on the improvement value on the investment, along with a payment in lieu of taxes to Orange County.

“Jefferson Energy continues to invest in our community. We are thankful for the partnership and look forward to future opportunities to grow Orange County,” Hill said.

With Orange County connecting business to the world market through highway, rail, and port resources, it continues to strive forward with expanding the market for residents and businesses alike.

Walter G. Riedel III Education Center and Eunice R. Benckenstein Library & Archive at the Stark Museum of Art expands possibilities

A new two-story building in downtown Orange is more than a Library and Archive for the Stark Museum of Art, it offers expanded educational options for residents.

The approximately 15,000 square-foot building is built primarily from concrete and steel, making it virtually fireproof. The new building is also designed to withstand a category five hurricane. The estimated cost of the facility is $7-8 million.

The building is also home to the Walter G. Riedel III Education Center located on the first floor.

Classrooms are already in use by a local Watercolor Class, which was displaced due to Hurricane Harvey. The studio space was designed to accommodate such classes as well as offer a location for student and educator programming, adult studio art workshops, family programs and workshops, lectures and community art such as the annual Juried Student Art Exhibition and the community-weaving project.

“It started as a student project and is an ongoing community project,” Trina Nelson Thomas, Director, Stark Art & History venues, said. “We recycle old t-shirts for it.”

The first floor also houses the This Land Was Made for You and Me: 2018 Juried Student Art. The exhibit features 108 framed and hung pieces of art drawn, painted, and sketched by local students.

Upstairs is the Eunice R. Benckenstein Library & Archive, which is already receiving, requests from students across the country.

“I am communicating with a Stanford student working on his PhD,” Jennifer Hudson Connors, manager of the Stark Foundation Library and Archive, said. “He is researching cut glass and those who took care of it in the gilded age.”

While, the downtown area received flood waters during Hurricane Harvey, the museum was not flooded.

“We are high enough it did not flood with Harvey, Ike or in 2016,” Thomas said.

“We are 11 feet above sea level,” Connors added. “We never had water.”

However, the humidity from the days following Harvey and the area without power, the archives were in need of checking each item to for mold and mildew reblooming.

To prevent such an issue in the future and to protect items already purged, a special freezer is located upstairs in the archives.

“Items must be wrapped and frozen to kill anything that may be growing,” Thomas said. “A HEPA vacuum is used to remove anything before permanent storage.”

“We are diligent to keep it under control and in a stable environment,” Connors said. “There are back up generators to prevent it from happening again.”

Prior to the completion of the new building, the archives were housed on Front Street.

With the compact shelving on the second floor, the library has room to grow.

“We estimated the future growth for 20-25 years,” Thomas said.

“It holds everything now and what is projected 20 years in the future,” Connors added.

The library has 8,599 volumes, periodicals, auction catalogs, and other research materials.

The academic library is open to scholars and staff by appointment.

It is also the same library used by the educators at Stark Museum as they prepare, and research for tours for students.

Upon request, all tours can have an art-making component.

Lutcher & Moore Lumber Company celebrates 140th anniversary

In a joint celebration of the new Stark Foundation Library and Archives and the 140th Anniversary of the Lutcher and Moore Lumber Company, the Stark Cultural Venues had planned a reunion until Hurricane Harvey altered the plans.

As an effort to learn more about the people who worked in the industry, which helped found Orange, the foundation is reaching out to descendants and family members of the Lutcher and Moore Lumber Company employees.

The Stark Archives would like to hand to scan old photographs and record memories of their legacy. They are also seeking residents who worked for Lutcher and Moore Lumber Company for oral interviews.

Some of the memories will also be on display in a 2018 exhibit.

Henry J. Lutcher and G. Bedell Moore came to Texas in 1877 and established what was probably the first large lumber operation in the state at Orange on the Sabine River.

They were experienced lumbermen, having owned a sawmill company in Williamsport, Pennsylvania before migrating South. The Lutcher and Moore Lumber Company developed into one of the largest lumber operations in the entire Gulf South and frequently reported the largest annual cut of any Texas enterprise at a single site. They owned large acreages of pinelands on both sides of the Sabine and expanded their activities to include a number of related companies.

Henry Lutcher was a leader in promoting the development of a deep water port on the Sabine and the company exported Southern pine lumber to all parts of the world. L & M pioneered in the development of grade-marked lumber and was one of the first Texas companies to discontinue the use of merchandise checks for paying its employees, according to https://library.sfasu.edu.

The company ceased operations in the early 1930s.

The West Orange – Cove Consolidated Independent School District continues to empower lives through excellence every day. During the 2017-2018 school year, great traditions continue and new opportunities have been introduced.

In the spring of 2017, the district earned designation as one of 198 Early College High Schools in Texas. As a result, an Early College program was launched at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.

Early College High Schools (ECHS) are innovative high schools that allow students least likely to attend college an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and 60 college credit hours. The West Orange – Stark High School program is in partnership with Lamar State College – Orange.

Early College High Schools:

• provide dual credit at no cost to students, • offer rigorous instruction and accelerated courses, • provide academic and social support services to help students succeed, • increase college readiness, and • reduce barriers to college access.

This year 21 WOS High School freshmen started the process of earning an associate’s degree from Lamar-Orange.

tivities. Additionally, they have access to all Lamar State College services and facilities. WOCCISD covers all costs relating to tuition and books, as well as transportation to and from Lamar.

Twenty-five West Orange – Stark Middle School eighth grade students have already been selected to enter the program in the fall of 2018. Over 50 Middle School students submitted applications for acceptance. The selection process included an interview, as well as a weighted lottery.

In fact, many High School students have advanced to the highest level of competition possible.

The Mustang football team advanced to their fourth consecutive appearance in the 4A Division II football state championships and completed the season as state silver medalists. Five members of this team earned All-State honors.

A commercial photography student placed second in the advertising division of the Association of Texas Photography Instructors State Contest. Two additional photography students will compete in the State Digital Commercial Photography Competition this spring. Additionally, six precision machine students will compete in the project competition at state; while,

ous opportunities for success. WOC students and teachers also receive support from outstanding community partnerships which include the Men of Excellence program, the WOS Alumni Foundation, and the WOC Education Foundation.

This fall, West Orange – Cove earned a “Superior” from the state’s school financial accountability rating system and a “Met Standard” accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency.

Childs Building Supply thriving, approaching 50th Anniversary

Good old hometown service.

That’s what the folks from Orange County have been accustomed to for almost 50 years when they visit Childs Building Supply.

Many a person who shopped at the store for nuts and bolts with possibly their father, years later are in the store picking out paint with their wives.

People growing up in Orange, Texas there is little doubt, know where Childs Building Supply is, which is still at its friendly location at 3714 16th Street.

It doesn’t matter if a customer is seeking a $5 item or a $500 item, they are greeted at the door by a friendly employee and are immediately helped.

Owner Brad Childs basically grew up in the store his father, Henry, created in 1968 as the business will celebrate its 50th anniversary this summer.

“Dad started the business way back when, basically selling lumber out of something that resembled a U-Haul truck,” said Brad Childs. “He built it up fast with a lot of hard work, and of course, great customers that kept coming back. We’re the oldest hardware store in Orange County and we’re really proud of that thanks to a lot of loyal customers. We also are known for tremendous employees and I’ve been blessed to have worked with and continue to work with some excellent people.”

Despite weathering numerous hurricanes and seeing TxDOT take over the land where Childs once had its lumberyard, the store continues to thrive.

During the onslaught of Hurricane and Tropical Storm Harvey, the store had a little over five inches of water throughout the store.

However, Childs was back at it as soon as possible, serving customers despite the terrible conditions.

“We were doing our best to help all of our residents out as soon as possible and we were up and running due to the help a lot of folks, including Ace Hardware, who were doing their very best to get merchandise delivered to us.

We were fortunate enough to help folks,” Childs said.

“The store was full of water but we set up barricades so no one could get inside the store. They would ask for what they needed and we would go around the store getting the products to them. We were good for three or four days and then we lost power for a bit. It was awesome to finally get things back and running where people could actually get into the store.”

Childs, a graduate of Texas A&M University, received plenty of help from friends, family and of course, “his Aggie family.”

“It’s nice to be in a business where you can grow nice ties with people, plus we had a lot of help also from Texas A&M friends that will always be family,” Childs said. “We will always be grateful from all the help we received, then we were able to pay it forward to help so many people across the area.”

Since Brad Childs has owned the store, he’s had to deal with the hurricanes during the storm and their aftermath.

“I talk to my Dad, who is 89 now, about the three

storms I’ve had to deal with and that he didn’t and he always tells me about that one time his sign blew down way back when,” laughed Childs.

Harvey did around $84,000 worth of uninsured damage but the store has bounced back nicely to say the least.

“Even though we lost the lumber part of our business, we’re still thriving pretty well,” said Childs. “We’ve been so busy on the electrical and plumbing end of things, plus so many routine household items that people are looking for. For the first few months after the storm, we were doubling our normal revenue. We know so many people are working so hard to get back into there homes and we have a lot of items in stock that can help them get to as close as normal as possible. I love to here so many positive stories about people getting back in their homes, that’s what is great about being in this business. You hear some horror stories that can turn into blessings a lot of times and those are wonderful.”

Childs, who is a councilmember for the City of Orange, wants to see Orange thrive and continue to get back on its feet.

“I’m a hometown guy that wants to see his hometown prosper,” said Childs. “We want to see new businesses come here and we must have that. It’s great to see Jake Lemoine get his new restaurant going [Boardwak Grille] downtown and we need more than that. We want people to be proud of Orange and shop in Orange. We want them to spend their money here so that our local economy has a chance to grow. HEB is coming down the line as well, See ‘Building,’ page 20 Progress 2018 • 19

so we have things to look forward too and we’ve got to be able to work together as a community and as a city to try and help us prosper even more by getting more businesses to locate here.”

Childs feels every dollar spent can go a long way and travel well in the area.

“When someone shops our store, that makes me go spend some of that at lunch at Spanky’s and then Jake Lemoine [also the owner of Spanky’s] goes somewhere else in town and gets his haircut, then that hairdresser, lets’ say, takes that and goes to, say, Market Basket.

That’s the kind of thing we want in Orange. We want people to keep their shopping here, the more that happens, the more our area can thrive.”

Childs Building Supply and its employees love to call Orange County home and wouldn’t have it any other way and love the resiliency that residents have shown throughout what has been a tough, “stormy” road.

“That is the most heartwarming thing about it all, seeing people rally around other people through some tough times,” said Childs. “To see everyone come together, that’s what it is all about.”

One thing for certain, Childs Building Supply will continue being there, making it a great place to shop, whether you’re looking for pesticide to kill those dreaded ants in the backyard or one of those cool-looking new 52” and 61” Scag Patriots to tackle the lawn.
