Dear O’Neal Community, Those of us with the privilege to spend our days at O’Neal see the constant activity on our campus. We watch children learn, grow, experience success, overcome challenges and ultimately graduate. It is extraordinary to be part of their lives for as many as thirteen years, but it is also significant to learn what they accomplish in college and beyond. O’Neal has a forty year history of graduating students who are prepared to meet the challenges of their futures.

In recent editions of the O’Neal Magazine, we have featured alumni who have excelled in many ways.

Their accomplishments in business, law, the arts and other fields highlight the value of an O’Neal education, and recent graduates have been inspired by commencement speakers Jamaal Barnes ’05 and Eric Subin ’04.

Director of Alumni Relations Blanche Hancock ’88 and Director of Admissions Olivia Webb ’02 shared their experiences with our current students at our Founders Day assemblies. Mrs. Hancock told the students, “I was part of a community that was very different physically, but not so different in terms of the goals: Academics, Achievement, and Character. As you are, I was encouraged and supported in Middle and Upper School as I worked to become a student athlete, and a good person. I was taught responsibility, accountability….And I know how lucky I am to work in this environment, and how lucky I am that my children are able to be a part of this same community.” Mrs. Webb’s comments included, “I was afforded the opportunity to graduate from this school in 2002. I have the honor of working here as admissions director today, alongside some of the very same faculty and staff who taught and helped raise me. And one day I hope to see my son sitting out there in one of those seats. Whether you fully understand this now or in twenty years….just know that you are part of a unique community."

As O’Neal nears the half-century mark, we celebrate the achievements of our graduates and current students. We also recognize the exceptional support and dedication of those who founded The Wallace O’Neal Day School and know that it is our obligation to build on their legacy for future generations.

The Legacy for the Future Society at The O’Neal School was started in 2003, and provides an opportunity for the growth of endowment funds. An endowment fund is needed to support school operations and provide security for the future of the School. Your contribution to the endowment ensures that children will have the unique opportunity to benefit from an O’Neal education.

Gifting may be in the form of cash or stock or by including the School in your will, trust or estate plans (planned giving), or as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. While all gifts are appreciated, a cash, stock or a planned gift of $10,000 or more qualifies you as a member in the Legacy for the Future Society. Celebrating a Founding Family The Howes

dirt of a diligent man who made great things from that dirt.

However, it would not be uncommon to find him later at a black tie fundraiser looking as if he had spent his day working quietly behind a desk. A man of many talents, and the drive to put them to the best possible use, Tom was a good man who is missed by many.

Tom was born July 28, 1937 in Hamlet, but grew up in Williamsville, N.Y. and Pinehurst. He moved to Pinebluff in 1957 to operate Aurora Hills Dairy Farm for several years.

He then worked for his father’s nursery and landscape business at Clarendon Gardens in Pinehurst. He continued farming in Pinebluff, growing corn, hay and vegetables. An animal lover, he always provided a home for horses and a variety of farm animals. He fostered a waterfowl habitat at his lake, which is surrounded by protected wetlands.

Though the two originally knew each other from the Buffalo area of New York, where their families lived, Nancy Johnston and Tom spent summer vacation time together due to the long friendship between Tom’s sister, Muff, and Nancy.

For many years, Pinehurst was made up of mostly ‘summer cottages’ and was primarily a vacation destination for residents of states north and further south. Nancy was often included in the Howe family vacations to Clarendon Gardens in Pinehurst as well as those to the Howe family cottage in Wrightsville Beach. Tom and Nancy were married in 1959.

In 1969 they started Aurora Hills Farm Nursery and Landscape business at the farm in Pinebluff, where the business continues to thrive under the management of Tommy and Johnny Howe, Tom and Nancy’s two sons.

The original school bell for Wallace O'Neal Day School was dedicated to Tom and Nancy Howe on Founders Day 2011 celebrating 40 years. The bell is now located in front of McMurray Hall Lower School.

or more than 40 years, Thomas James Howe was a steadfastly supportive member of The O’Neal School and its community. Tom, along with his wife of 55 years, Nancy, was also an active member of the Moore County education scene, an active and involved parent and grandparent, and the owner of Aurora Hills Farm and Nursery. In a recent interview with Nancy and sons, Tommy and Johnny Howe, the three shared their thoughts about O’Neal’s early days, their time as students, and the twists and turns of maintaining a successful family business for almost 50 years. Those who knew Tom remember a warm, welcoming, hardworking, often outspoken, and generous man. They remember fishing, swimming, and cookouts by the lake, and oyster roasts in the yard. They remember hayrides for their kids and fun times at the beach.

Many in the Moore County area incorrectly assumed that since O’Neal was being formed as public schools were being racially integrated, that the founding families were actually looking for a way to keep their children apart from that integration. That was not at all the case. What began in 1971 as Wallace O’Neal Day School, for students in grades four, five and six, was originally planned as an alternative to

the public schools for students who would finish third grade at Episcopal Day School. As those students enrolled in the original three grades moved up, the school grew accordingly. It was common during that time for families to send their children to boarding school, but that trend was starting to change. Nancy recalls talking to other moms, saying, “Hey, wait! I want to see those soccer games!” Thus the decision was made to expand O’Neal even further by adding the high school, with the first class graduating in 1977. Throughout those years, there were multiple hurdles, both with the limited and temporary nature of the structures used as classrooms as well as the lack of financial stability. Tom was always there to assist, using his skills to fix anything in the rapidly aging trailers that served as lower grades’ classrooms for the first 10 years. He provided campus beautification by way of landscaping services in trees, shrubbery, and manpower.

Alice Robbins, one of the first teachers at O’Neal, former college counselor and interim head of school recalls, “Tom virtually established the soccer field and put hours and hours into keeping it up. Nancy and Tom both were among the strongest early supporters, and Nancy’s father gave a donation to help enable the Middle School gym to be built. They were among the first of a long, long line of families who have helped O’Neal get to where it is today.”

The O’Neal School became a reality. To be sure, the early days of the School were unpredictable and success depended on folks like Tom and Nancy to see us through the difficult times.”

O’Neal grandparents, past parents, and longtime friends of Tom and Nancy, Jerry and Sarah Slade, added, “As a couple new to the Sandhills in 1976, we were welcomed and befriended by Tom and Nancy. We soon learned that they were not only generous to The O’Neal School, but also to so many by way of invitation to their home at Wrightsville Beach.

Our son, Kirven, became good friends with Tommy and Johnny, and our daughters Dorothy and Blanche, as well as their friends, were the recipients of Tom and Nancy’s many kindnesses.”

The Howes’ commitment to O’Neal continued throughout the tenure of their sons’ time as students at the School.

Tommy graduated in 1978 and Johnny in 1980. Never truly tapering off, the Howes’ investment continued some years later as both Tommy and Johnny’s children attended and graduated from O’Neal. Tommy’s sons, Gage and Bo, graduated in 2003 and 2005 respectively. Bo is currently living in Oregon and is a successful glass blower, while Gage is a school counselor and part time musician in Athens, Georgia.

Cody and Daniella Howe, two of Johnny’s children, graduated in 2008 and 2013. Webber Howe, Johnny’s oldest son, attended O’Neal until high school.

As Ted Taws, also a founding board member said, “Tom and Nancy Howe were part of the founding families who gave so much support in time, kind, and wealth to see that

Johnny’s three children are living and working in Moore County. Throughout the many years when there were Howe children and grandchildren in attendance at O’Neal, and even in the years without Howe descendants enrolled, the family has remained involved in and generous to the School community.

good reason, that “the success of Aurora Hills is due to the hard work and loyalty of all our employees.” Over the years, Aurora Hills has grown to over 300 acres, which included Tom’s tree farm. The tree farm is bordered by Pinebluff Lake Road and the CSX Railroad. It is a place to protect wildlife and practice conservation methods to restore and enhance the longleaf pine ecosystem through use programs such as the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program, the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, and the N.C. Forest Development Program. During the recent recession, the employee base became smaller where the home landscaping business grew, thus adapting to the current economic conditions in order to keep the business strong.

Tommy and Johnny both have fond memories of their time at O’Neal. They valued the small classes, the opportunity to form relationships with their teachers, and they were both especially quick to discuss their appreciation of the freedom they were allowed as students, freedom that their friends were not allowed at other schools. “We could leave school to go to McDonald’s for lunch, and we were trusted to return to school when we were supposed to,” says Johnny. “We did not take that trust for granted. We knew we were lucky to be able to do that.”

Beginning in 2000, Aurora Hills became a family business with two separate entities. Since then, Johnny has run the nursery and working on existing customers’ landscaping, as when customers choose plants to add to or update their current landscape. His crew helps with onsite selection, then placement and installation for the customer. Johnny’s sons, Webber and Cody, both help him run this aspect of Aurora Hills.

Tommy recalls with fondness his sports coaches, and how they treated the athletes as people, and expected a lot of the kids. “My world revolved mostly around the sports, Tommy recalls. “The coaches were consistently good. Bob Haarlow was our basketball coach, Peter Kritzer was the baseball coach, Jim Reid was the soccer coach until Al Stratta took over. It was a pretty consistent group. They were tough, and they made you work. It was very competitive and we played bigger schools, and we won. That was always our goal, to beat the bigger schools, the underdog thing.”

When it came time to send their own children to school, O’Neal was the obvious choice. They wanted their children to have the same experience they had, in school and in sports. “I coached at least one of the boys, if not both, either in soccer or baseball,” says former teacher, coach and Lower School Head Jim Miles. “Very good athletes and unafraid. One of my highlights was doing science labs with Johnny, and we probably created some experiments that we shouldn’t have!!! The Howes have always been a unique family in that they’ve never met a stranger. Everyone was always welcome, and Tom and Nancy always made time for you. They were the kind of people you wanted to be around, and just seeing them come in the door put a smile on your face. Tom’s service was a tribute to a great man, and one whose attributes and praises will be sung for many, many years.”

The time and effort, good will and financial support that Tom and Nancy Howe have provided at O’Neal pales in comparison to what they have practiced in order to maintain the successful Aurora Hills Farm and Nursery for two generations.

It was in its early years, and still is today, a business run by and for family. It is a business created and nurtured by a family who values often excruciatingly hard work and respects its employees. Tom and Nancy have always claimed, with

Tommy’s primary focus is on new constructions, planning and implementing landscaping designs with particular attention to regulated water erosion control.

While he had relinquished control of the business to ‘the boys’, Tom was by no means retired at this point. Rather than spending his days slowly and quietly, he continued to be the perpetual ‘fix it man’, from leaking irrigation pipes to stalled tractor motors, Tom could fix anything.

Tommy recalls, “When we had a damaged tire, we would roll it into the garage and not give it another thought. Later that same day, the tire would roll back out, ready for use. It was like magic.” It is those everyday repairs and tasks that now have Tom’s fix-it side kick for almost ten years, Juan, working double time to stay on top of what needs to be done. Tom’s absence has left a hole.

Tom Howe passed away on November 21, 2015. Per his wishes, family and friends gathered at the lake for prayers, warm remembrances, and lots of funny stories. The gathering was large, casual, multi-generational and multi-racial. It

was a party, a celebration that Tom would have liked. It was an outdoor affair with good food and spirits. There were many folks from all walks of life, all folks who were influenced for the better by a great man, a very special man who has left quite a legacy.

We now salute you with this blast Turn your eyes to the end of the pier; Put your hands together and begin to cheer.

Thank you so much for all the years Rest in Peace. We leave you in tears.

We love you Tom.

Tom was kind to everyone.

He always said what was on his mind.

He worked all day and forgot about the time.

He fed the horses and worked on the equipment Never once did he stray from his commitment.

Class Notes

Taylor Woodell ’10 graduated in 2014 from the Film Studies Program at UNC Wilmington and is living in Charleston, SC. She is currently working as the extras casting director on USA Network Pilot, “The Sinner,” starring Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman.

Grace Baran ’12 graduated from East Carolina Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in May 2016 and immediately began working at United Technologies Aerospace Systems as a design engineer.

Mark Bonville ’12 has earned a bachelor’s degree in modern language and Chinese from the University of Georgia.

In the August 2016 ceremony, graduating cadets were awarded commissions as second lieutenants in the U.S. armed forces. Mark commissioned as a second lieutenant in U.S. Army Reserves – Military Intelligence.

Congratulations to Chappell Russell ‘09 on her very recent engagment to Jason Foley! Chappell works as a trainer at Keen Dog in Fort Mill, South Carolina.

PROFESSIONAL UPDATES: Mike Hill ’90 is the golf operations director of Stonebridge Golf Club, Edgewater Golf Club and Larkin Golf Club.

Mike and his wife, Wendy, currently live in Monroe, NC.

Since graduating from Appalachian State in May 2015 with a degree in environmental science, Christopher Waddell ’10 has been working as a lab tech with Andrew Dembosky ’10 (UNCP graduate with a degree in biology) at Marlboro-Chesterfield Pathology lab. In his down time, Christopher helps tutor O’Neal French students. Christopher plans to pursue a Masters degree in the geosciences within the next year.

n September 8th, during the annual PA Picnic, O'Neal alumni and former/present faculty and staff joined for a casual reunion in a dedicated area of the campus. The focus was on the Class of 1986. It was a great time to share memories of the School's 45 years. It is hoped that O’Neal will have a similar gathering at the 2017 picnic for alumni from 1987 - 2000, and another in 2018 for alumni 2001 – present. In 2021, plans are for ALL alumni to return back on campus to be part of the celebration of O'Neal's 50th year!

Varsity / Alumni Basketball Challenge

Last year the Varsity Basketball Challenge was held before winter break on December 16th and as always, everyone on the court as well as in the stands had a great time as the the alumni Falcons played the varsity Falcons. There were split wins as the varsity girls beat the alumnae ladies and the alumni men beat the varsity boys. Honorary Coach of the alumnae team, Beth Whitman was there for support.

Introducing

FalconFit! T

he O’Neal School is now an official CrossFit Kids affiliate, and last year’s afterschool fitness club “FalconFit” is now part of the regular weekly schedule in both the Lower and the Middle Schools. Middle school students can add CrossFit Kids, commonly called FalconFit, as an elective, and K-5th grade students get CrossFit kids classes as part of their weekly enrichment schedule.

CrossFit Kids is a method for teaching fitness in a fun and inclusive way for ages 3-18. It is meant to be BIG fun for all ages and ability levels. Based on the principle of Mechanics, Consistency and then Intensity, CrossFit Kids emphasizes good movement throughout childhood and adolescence. Consistently good movement translates to physical literacy, enhanced sports performance and fewer sports injuries for kids. Not only that, a vast body of research indicates that exercise is beneficial to cognitive function, which means consistent adherence to the program can have a positive impact on children’s academic achievement.

Middle School Academic Coach Alyson Barrett has been instrumental in having O’Neal be accepted as a CrossFit Kids Affiliate. She explained the importance of exercise and its correlation to academic success in a recent O’Neal Faculty Thoughts blog entry – “We know from current research that aerobic exercise improves both executive functioning and academic success (Best 2010; Hillman 2009),” she cites. “A 2010 CDC report reviewed 50 research studies, and they concluded that physical exercise can positively impact cognitive skills and academic achievement.” She goes further to say, “There are several explanations for the link between exercise and academic success, but one that I find really interesting is that the brain exerts a neurotrophin called brain-de14

rived neurotropic factor (BDNF). Harvard psychiatrist John Ratey dubbed BDNF “miracle-Gro for the brain” (Cooper 2013). But that’s not all. Exercise changes the physiology of the brain by causing cerebral capillary growth, development of nerve connections, growth of nerve cells in the hippocampus, and more (CDC 2010). With this in mind, we should probably all devote a little more time to exercise regardless of our age.”

Some skills learned through the arts are: motor skills, language development, decision making, visual learning, inventiveness, cultural awareness, improved academic performance, critical thinking, and social skills. But the two skills sets that stand out and seem to serve as a foundation for the rest are: creativity and confidence.

“I believe that the arts teach children skills they will need for the future, such as learning to be innovative thinkers, to problem solve, express, communicate, and collaborate,” says Middle School Art Teacher Judy Browne. “Art is not simply a means of expression or a measure of talent, but an educative means to enhance creative thought. It is a process that requires much practice and application. Art education opens the door for students to explore their creativity.”

“The first priority is developing a love for music and building up confidence to actively engage in music,” says Music Teacher David Lussier. “Music is the only discipline that contains all the others: language arts through lyrics and librettos, social studies through the fact all cultures from all points in human history have songs that tell the stories of life and beliefs unique to them, rhythm is math, sound production and instrument making contain science, playing instruments requires hand-eye coordination.”

Art and music are weekly classes for Lower School students.

IBM surveyed chief executives around the world and found that creativity was the most sought after trait in leaders today (Kelley and Kelley, 2012). While the big topic in the professional world is to learn how to reclaim creative confidence, it is the job of educators to not let it go away, but to strengthen it with practice.

So when you see forts built at the Lower School playground as students collaborate to make it “just right”, or a solo performed during a third grade musical, or solar ovens made in all shapes and sizes to cook a s’more in the Middle School or the all famous construction of a catapult, trebuchet or ballista for Upper School physics students to chunk a pumpkin, think about the arts and its contribution to confidence and creativity as it is applied to different aspects of learning.

Sean Chapman Sean Chapman, Class of 1992: Sean earned his BA in English from UNC Chapel Hill and his MA in Theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore. Sean currently teaches Theology at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville, South Carolina with his wife, Heidi, who teaches Spanish and French at St. Mary’s Catholic School. In addition to their day jobs, Sean and Heidi are also two of the founding members of their band Randomonium.

Patrick Fuller, Class of 2008: After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill in 2012, Patrick has been working on writing and performing his music. Pat tells us that he has “been bouncing back and forth between Nashville and the Pines. In Nashville I’ve played a few blues cover gigs with some friends, not much beyond that and the odd open mike nights.

In North Carolina, I’ve been playing on and off with Tim Stelmat’s (O’Neal Class of 2006) band, Whiskey Pines, as well as occasionally supporting musician Tony Barnes.” While he has not been playing much solo, he did play his original music at the outstanding Sunrise Songwriter show in September. He has been in and out of his father’s, Craig Fuller, home studio, where Randomonium is the perfect kind of strange - a mystical they produced five songs for an EP. Nuzzo Family Foundation Scholarship In recognizing Teeda and Sal Nuzzo’s strong value for a strong educational background, the Nuzzo family provides scholarships to four Upper School students annually. The Robbins Scholarship is a four-year O’Neal Upper School scholarship awarded to a rising ninth grader, and was given in honor of Alice Robbins.
