Dear O'Neal Community, It has been my honor to serve O’Neal as Head of School during the last 10 academic years. The School has added programs and grade levels, made campus wide improvements, faced challenges like the pandemic, celebrated the countless accomplishments of our students, and grown along with the Sandhills. Most importantly, we have had the privilege and responsibility to serve our families and provide our students an outstanding educational experience. My first kindergarten students are now in upper school and some of the graduates from my time not only have careers but have also started families. The students are at the heart of everything we do at O’Neal, and to have been a small part of their lives and their futures is the greatest honor of my three decades in independent schools.

Readers will find stories about our students throughout these pages. SSRP scholars, athletes from the School’s history, and students learning on class trips and from O’Neal’s first campus naturalist and our new librarian. You will also read the special story of Toyin Koleoso. She demonstrates courage, resilience and determination, and her host families exemplify extraordinary caring and generosity. All are inspiring. These student stories make it clear what a unique and extraordinary community we have at O’Neal.

This month O’Neal launched a new logo which is displayed throughout campus, and in our materials, including this magazine. This formal logo’s design is based on the beautiful pavilion in Konni’s Courtyard. This area was created as a community space for students and events, and it celebrates the School’s first 50 years. The structure at the center of campus unifies the divisions and proudly symbolizes the vision of those who made the School what it is today. The new logo represents O’Neal’s next era and bright future.

O’Neal is accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and is the only member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) in the area. O’Neal completed its reaccreditation for SAIS in September and received a unanimous recommendation for renewal from the visiting team of school leaders. The visiting team commended the School in many ways, including our comprehensive programs, strong sense of community, use of outdoor spaces, and strong faculty. After the evaluation of a SAIS school’s documents and standards, the overall process prompts schools to set goals for the next five years. O’Neal has identified the following broad areas for focus and improvement: Science and Technology; Safety and Wellness; Teaching and Learning; and Facilities. The accreditation self-study occurred in conjunction with the Board of Trustees’ strategic planning process, and that document will be completed later this year.

Those in the O’Neal community who know me know that I am enormously proud of this School and what we have accomplished. They know that I try to approach opportunities with an entrepreneurial mindset to serve others. Though I appreciate the Board of Trustees and SSRP students in having the cover story of this magazine spotlight my 10 years at O'Neal, the School's progress over the last 10 years is due to excellence of the faculty and staff, the trust and support of our families, and to the trustees who sustained the School. I am especially grateful to the board chairs who helped me through every challenge and celebrated every success. Thank you all, and I look forward to what the future holds for The O’Neal School we all cherish.

Celebrating Konni's Courtyard

O

'Neal's central campus opened in August of 2022 after lengthy construction. A special reception and dedication ceremony was held in April of 2022 where this project that connects all facets of the School's campus was named Konni's Courtyard in honor of Konni McMurray.

For more than 25 years Konni and her husband Brian have supported O'Neal. Konni has given generously of her time for special projects such as the annual Benefit, serving as a trustee and in parent roles surrounding the activities of her four children, as well as financial support.

A Dream Fulfilled

A look at the life journey of Aminatu Toyin Koleoso '18 Seven years ago, at the young age of 15, Toyin boarded a plane to the United States leaving her mother, father, brother, and sister in Lagos, Nigeria. Her focus was on obtaining an education in the United States and basketball.

Seven years ago, Head of School John Elmore saw the results of his efforts in arranging for Toyin’s emigration to the US. Mr. Elmore had a connection with Toyin’s school, and from working with other students, knew what a life-changing opportunity O'Neal could give. With many members of the O’Neal community supporting him, it was his goal to set the stage for a successful future for Toyin who had the maturity and courage to take on the challenge.

With one suitcase holding only a few articles of clothing, Toyin arrived at her new home with Janet Trent and Dargan Moore and daughters Emma ‘15 and Elizabeth ‘18 as her host family. “I wasn’t sure what I was doing exactly,” Toyin remembers. “I didn’t think much of the future past high school. I just saw that other girls were doing well going this route.”

’Neal’s Aminatu Toyin Koleoso ’18 graduated from Skidmore College last spring with degrees in business administration and economics. During her time at Skidmore, she was a part of the women’s basketball program as a college recruit. She is presently a financial services consultant at Ernst and Young in New York City.

questions and comments, and the things we explain to her about life in America, give us a fresh and sometimes surprising view of our lives.

many things. It has brought me so much from where I was to where I am right now.” College basketball was a humbling experience but worth the work. She was able to meet people from backgrounds different from her own.

Another aspect of having an exchange student for an entire school year is the impact that her education will have on her perspective of the choices she has in life. All teenagers mature and learn about life throughout high school, but with the added impact of living in a different culture, her journey is perhaps farther and faster. Being a part of that on a daily basis is a privilege, and we can already see Toyin enlarging her view of the possibilities that lie ahead.”

After receiving a summer internship with Ernst & Young, she was offered a full-time job as a financial services consultant a full year before graduating.

"I am so proud of Toyin and honored to have been part of her journey," says Head of School John Elmore. "O'Neal's community did much to help and support her, but truly, she brought more to our school than we could have imagined.

She is an inspiration."

The following two years, Toyin was hosted by the McHarney family.

During her three years at O’Neal, in addition to her host families, many in the O'Neal community, including coaches and close friends, joined in having Toyin with them over the summer, on weekends and holidays, and at other special times. She attributes her relationships and friendships made at O’Neal and Skidmore for assisting with her achievements.

She reflects, “I don’t know if it would have happened, but at that time, in my head, I thought I must do well. I don’t want to be sent back.”

Toyin closed her presentation as guest speaker at last year’s sports recognition ceremony with the following: “All I can say is the greatest gift of life is friendships and relationships... and I have received it.”

That determination helped Toyin to be accepted into the Opportunity Program at Skidmore, a program providing financial, academic, and psychosocial support for talented and motivated students. The Opportunity Program funded Toyin’s college education, and furthered her basketball career.

O'Neal Celebrates Beth Whitman

I

n celebration of her 81st birthday and her 30+ years of teaching, coaching, counseling, and mentoring O'Neal students, we gathered to honor Beth Whitman in June.

It was a lovely celebration, topped off with fantastic performances by David Michael Wolff and Newnew Hong '27. Ms. Whitman loves classical music. It was a truly special evening for a truly special lady.

’Neal’s Falcons are 50 Commemorative Golf Tournament and Alumni Day was held on April 9th. The golf tournament saw current students, parents, friends and nearly 20 alumni compete at the newly renovated Southern Pines Golf Club. Many more alumni joined the golfers at the Alumni Day Dinner.

Starting with Volleyball, Basketball and Soccer

I

n 1971 The O’Neal School was founded. In 1972 O’Neal Athletics was born. This year we celebrate 50 years of athletics at O’Neal beginning with volleyball, basketball and soccer.

Volleyball

Without an indoor facility until the winter of 1974, volleyball games and practices at O’Neal were held on the outside court. Mary Ann Hall (Halstead) was the coach.

Originally, she was an English teacher asked to help with physical education. She taught the fundamentals and the team played large schools with established sports programs, such as Charlotte Country Day. It was a humble beginning for volleyball on their outdoor court. In 1973, volleyball’s second year, the School had JV and varsity teams.

“When I think of O’Neal volleyball, I think of Coach Cindy Strickland,” says Roberta. “As my PE teacher starting in kindergarten, she had us working on volleyball passes and serves long before we could play middle school volleyball.

Coach Strickland loved the game of volleyball and she helped instill a love of the game in me. There were lots of wins under Coach Strickland, but what I remember the most is loving the experience so much that I didn’t want to stop playing volleyball.”

Sisters Ginny Quis Wellford ’96 and Roberta Quis Fox ‘99 both played volleyball for Davidson College. At Davidson, Ginny holds the record (1996-1999) for Career Assists at 2608. Roberta holds the record (1999-2002) for Career Kills at 1233, Career Attack Percentage at .308, and Career Blocks at 431.

Basketball

O’Neal cannot claim a state championship for basketball, but its significance is its beginning at O’Neal, and its role in the lives of so many students and the essence of community that it provides.

O’Neal’s first headmaster Bob Haarlow played basketball at Princeton University alongside the likes of Bill Bradley who went on to play for the Knicks. It was only natural that Mr. Haarlow be the boys basketball coach. Teacher and counselor Beth Whitman coached the girls.

Lately, the girls varsity basketball team has made its mark at O’Neal and around the state. With the coaching expertise of Lulu Brase, the Lady Falcons have recently celebrated their fifth consecutive conference season and tournament championship and have competed in three state championship games. Last year, Coach Brase earned her 100th game win at O’Neal.

In recent years, O'Neal has seen its graduates join collegiate women's basketball programs.

Soccer

Soccer began at O’Neal as a spring sport, starting in the School’s 1972-73 academic year.

Though primarily fielded by boys, girls were also eligible to tryout for the one soccer team the School claimed. In 1994 a girls team was formed. The 2006 girls soccer team won the state

championship under the coaching of Kyle Kegl, who has returned to O'Neal as member of the coaching staff as well as an assistant teacher in kindergarten. It is the only soccer state championship the School has earned. Team member Kelsey Hukee, who went on to play soccer at Meredith College reflects, “Soccer or ‘football’ has always been a way for me to be a part of a bigger community. When I reflect on the O’Neal Girls Varsity Soccer Team, I think of just that, a community.

We were friends first and teammates second. We all played together to have fun on and off the field, which to me is really what the game is about. I feel honored and very grateful for the warm memories of van rides to away games, pre2018 Conference Champions game chants, and the joy of winning States in 2006.”

The boys had consecutive conference championships in the 90's, making it to the state champoinship game for the first time in 1993. This past fall, the boys team was undefeated allowing only a single goal in season play, winning the conference championship.

With nine Wachovia/Wells Fargo Cups under its belt, most recently 2020 & 2021, superior coaching and a top notch sports performance program, O'Neal's athletics program continues to be a shining star for the O'Neal community.

Turning Passion into Perspective The Signature Scholars Research Program

T

he Class of 2022 saw the first students graduate as Signature Scholars. The Signature Scholars Research Program (SSRP), designed by John Elmore and Dr. Nicole Camastra, is a two-year intensive research study designed to challenge students beyond the normal college preparatory or Advanced Placement program and to establish a wellearned perspective on a topic about which the student is passionate.

Cohorts are not to exceed more than 10% of any class. As sophomores, students apply for the program in the spring.

Those who are accepted take the Research Methodology and Philosophy class taught by Dr. Camastra in their junior year. By the end of the course, students have written their annotated bibliography and research proposal unique to each student’s scholarly interests. The second year of the program, their senior year, each SSRP student works with a faculty mentor who has knowlege of the reserach area. Each student will produce a paper of approximately 10,000 words or equivalent work and present the research results at a public symposium. Successful completion of the program will have SSRP students receiving a diploma with distinction from the School.

The program debuted last year and Emily Wacker-Puleo, Stephanie Dücker, and Vicky Mills compiled two years of work into one year.

In an interview with The Pilot newspaper, Vicky Mills ’22 stated, “Agriculture sits at this fascinating intersection of anthropology and geological sciences that I just find so intriguing, and the idea of getting to dedicate time to that interest in my school day was tempting.”

Dr. Camastra recalled lecturing at the University of Georgia.

“Students rarely knew what they were interested in,” she said in an interview with The Pilot. "You can blame any number of things for that, but it’s a fact that students really have a hard time saying, ‘This is what drives me’”. The SSRP program allows students the opportunity to find their passion and earn a perspective.

Senior Max Esptein presents his research to different audiences adjusting, the presentation to the interest and level of each audience. The difficult topic of the future of space travel, its feasibility and engineering concerns was shared with O'Neal's kindergarten students.

A Retrospective on John Elmore’s 10 Years as O’Neal Head of School Signature Research Scholars were tasked by the Board of Trustees to write an article commemorating the accomplishments of Head of School John Elmore in celebration of his 10 years at The O'Neal School. he 2022-2023 academic year marks Head of School John Elmore's 10th year at The O’Neal School, a long way from the start of his educational career at Grinnell College and his hometown in rural Montana. He was the first on the paternal side to attend high school. Later, he studied abroad in Europe and gained a broader perspective of education from his global experiences. Throughout his time in graduate school and the start of his educational career, he desired to create a strong learning environment and carried his long-term academic vision with him. Above all, his greatest desire is to build academic excellence and to incorporate the feelings of community and equality within 14

O’Neal. Elmore’s successes produced immense growth and achievement within the School, all of which solidify his evergrowing legacy that will inspire future generations.

Elmore’s transition to O’Neal Head of School in 2014 signified a shift in O’Neal’s community, both academic and cultural. He brought with him a background of prior leadership experience. Trustee Stan Bradshaw and Chair of the Board of Trustees Dr. Lynda Acker, both of whom have worked with Elmore for years, lauded his knowledge of the education system and leadership style extending from a wealth of experience. Along with his large net of resources,

Bradshaw noted that Elmore prioritizes speed, focus, and flexibility while acting on his vision for the School to yearly expand on successful and rigorous programs. A particular value he introduced to O’Neal was a “Northeast” style, which draws on his experience with the dedicated academic tradition present in many long established institutions.

Elmore also mentioned advancing O’Neal by applying an “entrepreneurial spirit” to his leadership, prioritizing new ideas and individual action.

Under his leadership, multiple programs have been founded or improved at O’Neal, along with the other positive impacts he’s made on our community. During Elmore’s 10 years, the performance of athletics has been elevated to a higher level.

For example, girls golf became a varsity sport and the team has established a reputation as one of the strongest teams in the high school division. In the last four years alone, they brought home the state championship three times. The last two years have produced consecutive championships.

Beyond advancing a competitive golf program, Elmore tirelessly improves other aspects of athletics at O’Neal.

Acker remarked, “Athletics has been transformed into an incredibly successful program, with new teams added in both middle and upper school, and numerous championships, both conference, and state.” Furthermore, there were improvements to various facilities across campus such as updating the performance room and renovating the pool and equipment in 2018. These refurbishments enhance the physical capability, access, and health of O’Neal’s athletes, developing the performance of several sports teams. The numerous additions to the School demonstrate Elmore’s commitment to developing athletics overall.

Not only is Elmore dedicated to improving sports programs, but he created new academic opportunities to push the limits of the students at O’Neal. The Signature Scholars Research Program (SSRP), implemented in 2021, was created by Elmore in combination with English Department Head, Dr. Nicole Camastra and former Upper School Head, Matthew Jacobs. Although Advanced Placement courses have been a staple of O’Neal’s curriculum for many years, Elmore knew that for some O’Neal students, APs could go only so far and something new was needed to allow students to discover new academic frontiers. As a result, Elmore implemented SSRP, a program that went beyond those classes where a select number of students could begin collegiate-level research journeys. Elmore pursues progress in the O’Neal community beyond athletics and academics with other initiatives such as improving campus safety and diversifying the student body. For example, security fobs and a security head were introduced to O’Neal in an effort to provide greater protection to the community. Nurses and counselors are another aspect of safety and health added to O’Neal’s staff for better in-school care for students. Additionally, O’Neal is always seeking opportunities to expand the student body, such as hosting international students every year.

Director of Educational Technology and Library Service, Ms. Christine Fecteau, who worked with him at Green Farms Academy in Connecticut, observes that “there is a great, at least with the students, a great desire to kind of embrace it all.” Students are ambitious, and Elmore allows for their growth with the accomplishments and programs he has created or expanded at O’Neal.

Regarding athletics, one element of inequality that Elmore has sought to correct is the superior recognition of the men’s teams in comparison to the women’s teams, regardless of skill level.

When asked about Elmore’s biggest impact on the athletics department, O'Neal Athletic Director James Franklin, responded by saying, “In other schools, men's sports may get more attention, but he ensures that both gendered teams get equal representation”. Although he is very proud of the strides he has made in this area, Elmore’s commitment to progress yet again presents itself as he believes that O’Neal still has various areas in need of “building”.

A principal change that Elmore has brought to O’Neal has been a larger focus “on excellence, [in] all areas”, as he put it. He seeks to accommodate the variety of students he recognizes at O’Neal, saying, “We've done a nice job, I think, on both ends”, referring to both ends of the wide spectrum of student identities. He is aware of the value of individual students being able to access the fields they are passionate about, whether that be athletics, academics, the arts, or a combination thereof. John Elmore enjoys Field Day with the students in May 2022. nationwide. Bradshaw spoke on Elmore’s understanding of priorities during the pandemic. Many educational administrations were unwilling to deviate from the status quo of virtual learning that had been established; however, Elmore went another route. The "Montanan”, as Elmore calls himself, instead decided to remain completely inperson, without the alternative to online education. This maneuver was risky, but in the end, offered many benefits, including the retention of all faculty members, significant advantages to students’ social and educational development, staggering growth paired with record enrollment, and the continued establishment of O’Neal as a paragon for educational excellence.

Signature Scholars Research Program, campus safety and health, egalitarian expansion of the athletics program, greater academic aptitude, and much more. Holistically, The O’Neal School has grown significantly under the leadership of John Elmore, a scholar who arrived on the campus 10 years ago with ideas to be implemented and aspirations worth striving for. The entire O’Neal community recognizes and values Elmore’s contributions. Such recognition was made apparent when the Board of Trustees dedicated the green space surrounding Konni’s Courtyard— the newest community space in the center of campus—to Elmore, naming it “John Elmore Green.” In the coming years, he is hopeful to implement specific educational programs, such as incorporating accommodations for learning disabilities, expanding more social and emotional learning into the Middle and Upper Schools, and continuing to implement many more monumental improvements across the campus.

John Elmore is one of the most adaptable and resilient Heads of School in O’Neal’s half-century-long history.

elcome to O'Neal Ranger Nancy! A former park ranger at Weymouth Woods, spouse to Science Department Chair David Williamson and mother to Leah ’34 and Evan ’37, she is not a stranger to the O’Neal community.

She is O’Neal’s naturalist (PreK-6th) and Ranger Nancy is a “natural” at her job. From creepy crawlers and butterflies to leaves and everything green, and don’t forget our furry and feathered friends – there is always something exciting to explore with Ranger Nancy.

Meet Christine Fecteau Director of Educational Technology & Library Services

I

nteractive touch panels and laptops in the classroom, making research databases accessible to students and most importantly, converting a student who doesn't like to read into a book lover are some of the many roles of Christine Fecteau. Library circulation is up 100% year-overyear. Responsible for all aspects of the library programs and facilities, Ms. Fecteau seeks to ensure that academic and technology resources complement, enhance, and extend the School’s educational program. Ms. Fecteau comes to O’Neal from Greens Farms Academy in Westport, Connecticut where she served as director of library services for the past nine years. Ms. Fecteau has a master’s degree in informational science – school libraries from SUNY Albany and a certificate in school management and leadership from Harvard Graduate School of Education & Harvard Business School.

Welcome Back Class Trips

R

ecords dating back to 1974 document O’Neal students embarking on class trips. One week in September is dedicated to class excursions for the Upper and Middle Schools to retreats or places of interest all along the East Coast. Their purpose? To connect topics studied in class with real life places; some grades include college visits, but most of all, trips are for class bonding. The destination is ranked runner-up to the journey in getting to know classmates and advisors. Class trips are among the most memorable activities for an O’Neal student. Though O’Neal managed to have in-person learning throughout the pandemic, class trips were cut to a day trip for each class to Camp Caraway.

And though the creativity of administration and student life is to be commended during a time of COVID-19 mitigation, the return of the traditional class trip was a celebratory moment in the fall of 2022.

O'Neal Varsity Girls Golf wins their second straight NCISAA Title, with senior Alex Lapple as the medalist. This Fall, team seniors Alex Lapple and Maya Beasley signed National Letters of Intent to play in collegiate women's golf programs in the Fall of 2023. Great Results from "Technology for All" Fund A Need The generous support for the Technology for All Fund A Need at last year's annual Benefit has helped in many vital areas of the School. The interactive boards in classrooms create an active way to learn. The new Hudl video system has played an integral part for teams as they review video of their games to learn how to improve. The theater is seeing major improvements with the audiovisual equipment and just in time for O'Neal to receive a charter for the International Thespian Society.
