Dear O'Neal Community, The 2021-2022 academic year is dedicated to the celebration of O’Neal’s Golden Anniversary and the impact it has made on those students and their families who have joined this school community for the past 50 years.

Early this year, on Founders Day, we celebrated O’Neal’s first headmaster, Bob Haarlow, with a special dedication in recognition of his work in further developing the school and the difference he made in the lives of so many students. Several of the original staff and trustees were also present.

In addition, I announced O’Neal’s Growing Strong Capital Campaign. Its priorities are to update the physical classroom, faculty professional development as well as campus revitalization. As part of the Growing Strong Campaign, a central campus is under construction. “Konni’s Courtyard” will include spaces for teachers and students to collaborate, fields for play and a structure for gatherings and events. It will be a centerpiece on our beautiful, complete campus and forever pay tribute to O’Neal’s first 50 years and those who sustained the vision of the School’s founders.

O’Neal has always placed great value and respect in the concept of “community” and our history has been filled with achievement. The School’s enrollment is at an all-time high of 550 students, and for the second consecutive time, O’Neal athletics were awarded the Wells Fargo Cup in recognition of the top athletics program among Division 2A schools in the NCISAA. Our boys track and field team won the state championship this past spring, and our girls golf team followed this fall bringing home another championship trophy. We look forward to the culmination of the first year of the Signature Research Scholar program, and O’Neal’s all-school musical, Elf Jr, received high marks and sold-out shows.

The success of O’Neal’s programs and its students can be credited to the people who make the O’Neal community so special. Teachers, families, administration, trustees, alumni, founders, and past families all have a role in what makes The O’Neal School such a great place to learn, perform, excel and, serve.

O'Neal Honors First Headmaster

n its 50th year, O’Neal honored its first headmaster, Bob Haarlow with a special dedication ceremony on Founders Day – September 7th. A bronze statue of Bob sitting on a bench was presented. Complete with a basketball at his side, books on his lap and his school keys peaking from his pocket, the bench is a warm invitation to come sit with Bob. It will reside in O’Neal’s central campus, "Konni's Courtyard" to be complete this spring.

It's not very often that the first headmaster and the presiding head of school get to stand together representing the beginning and the present day with a span of 50 years of leadership for O'Neal inbetween. The school community is fortunate to continue the strong relationship with founding community members.

The Falcon

Dr. Charles Lowry

Dr. Lowry was the minister for the Village Chapel in Pinehurst and was instrumental in bringing interested parties together for a meeting in December of 1970 to discuss the formation of the future Wallace O’Neal Day School. Some families were educated in boarding schools and prep schools. They wanted the same education for their children, but closer to home. When Episcopal Day School announced that it would no longer offer a 4th grade, it gave Dr. Lowry and others the momentum to organize a new independent day school. Dr. Lowry taught AP History in the Upper School for many years beginning in 1976 and was named the "grandfather of O'Neal."

Dr. Lowry was a nationally known clergyman, author, lecturer, and philosopher. He earned his bachelors degree from Washington & Lee University at age 17. He earned his masters degree at Harvard, his B.D. at the Episcopal Theological School and a Doctor of Philosophy at Oxford.

Mary Toerge

Ms. Toerge was a parent, who also owned an interior design company, Mary Toerge Design Associates, in New York, with a branch in Pinehurst. Some claim Ms. Toerge as “the parent” who rallied other parents together to form O’Neal. Her social connections helped to find Bob Haarlow, O’Neal’s first headmaster. She was also instrumental in helping to provide temporary housing for newly hired teachers who had just moved to the Sandhills for the School -- notably, the beloved Jim Miles.

Her interior design skills were of tremendous value to the School when she partnered with another interior designer, Jane Huffines, to chair the very first, very memorable Monte Carlo benefit. One can assume that she also influenced the later Designer Homes also to benefit O’Neal.

Ted Taws, Jr.

Mr. Taws was a parent and the first chair of the Board of Trustees that was formed shortly following the inaugural “December meeting”. He and his Board were tasked to hire a headmaster, create a budget, provide temporary facilities and build the first brick and mortar school building.

Mr. Taws was determined that the School not be considered a segregated school. His vision was to provide another option for education, not for "white flight". Elijah “Pete” Peterson, an African American educator and community servant, served on the first Board of Trustees and his children were among the first students to attend Wallace O’Neal Day School.

Later Mr. Taws would help to grow the development office with the hiring of a director of annual giving, Mary Ann Salemme who launched the School's Annual Fund. Mr. Taws also encouraged the publication of a school magazine.

Our Flight to 50 segments in the O'Neal Magazine have included early O'Neal contributors such as Bob Haarlow, Jim Miles, and Mary Elaine O'Neal. We've reached 50 years.

With gratitude for the school community bestowed upon us, we commemorate those who put an idea into motion and gave it a foundation for success.

Jim Van Camp

Durward Grady

Jim Van Camp’s unofficial role with the School was being the administrator of everything official. A parent and attorney, and presently founder of many law practices in Pinehurst, Mr. Van Camp was the person to draw up the articles of incorporation for the School that were signed in February of 1971. Employment contracts, land donation transfers, building contracts and more were in the hands of Jim Van Camp.

Mr. Grady was the banker as well as a parent. The trust development officer for First Union Bank, he was instrumental in providing office space in the bank for the School to use over the summer of 1971 to interview prospective students and teachers as well as handle all other preparation for the opening day. In listening to others talk of those earlier years, First Union was often called “Durward’s Bank”.

On occasion he would steer over to the operations end of things such as travelling to Wadesboro to personally purchase the first school bus that everyone lovingly named Gertrude.

Mr. Grady managed the School’s bank account and reported regularly on its balance. The first years of the School were delicate and oftentimes, the bank balance couldn’t cover all of the expenditures. This called for creative measures and personal donations to come into play.

Jim served as the second chair of the Board of Trustees 1975 to 1977.

Durward Grady was the School’s third chair of the Board of Trustees serving 19781980. He joined O’Neal as the director of development in the early 80’s. He also is responsible for procuring the Falcon sculpture featured on this page.

Tom and Nancy Howe

The Howes represent every parent who gave of their time and resources in the effort to help establish O’Neal. “Tom and Nancy Howe were part of the founding families who gave so much support in time, kind, and wealth to see that The O’Neal School became a reality,” said Ted Taws. “To be sure, the early days of the School were unpredictable and success depended on folks like Tom and Nancy to see us through the difficult times.”

Tom used his skills to fix anything in the rapidly aging trailers that served as classrooms for the lower grades during the first ten years. The Howe family provided campus beautification by way of donating trees, shrubbery and manpower. Tom is known for establishing the first soccer field and putting in many hours of upkeep.

Nancy helped to establish the first “Mothers’ Association”, serving as treasurer, and was involved in the management of many events held to benefit the School.

Setting the Path for the

Passion

N

iasha Kodzai '20 is the second ever Park Scholar in North Carolina State University’s Industrial Design program and O'Neal's first ever Park Scholar. She hopes to have a future in toy design, with a focus on toys and devices for children with mental disabilities. Since graduating, she has worked hard to learn the ins and outs of design sketching, 3-D modeling, and physical modeling. She has exciting plans for the future, including toy design internships and spending a semester in Australia. Niasha has a bright future ahead of her. She follows many other Falcons who chose to include art in some form or fashion for their career.

We spotlight Jessica Morphew '96 and Douglas Gordon '98.

Jessica Morphew '96 is an art director of Penguin Random House.

She reflects on O'Neal's contribution to her success.

"My journey didn’t start with O’Neal, however throughout the 13 years I attended the school, I was supported and nurtured to follow my natural talents. I grew up with art all around me, and what my upbringing lacked in consistency and focus, the teachers at O’Neal provided. When I was in the lower school Cheryl Stuckey was the art teacher and she exposed me to many ways of making and expressing. She gave me language and structure to begin to see I wanted to make things in the world. I also learned of ancient Sumer and how they used cuneiform cylinders for written communications. My fascination for creating messages and meaning in the world began at this moment. How do we connect with others through an art form? How do you take an abstract idea and make it into something that can be understood by an audience?

As I grew up in the O’Neal community, I was recognized as being into art and was given time and space to pursue my explorations. When Beth Garrison became the art teacher, a whole new world opened up to me. We explored art history and its correlations to today’s world. We analyzed and discussed artworks from all over. And we made work, a lot of work. Painting, drawing, sculpture, furniture, we touched on it all. There was also a freedom to explore what interested us individually. I was afforded the opportunity to spend my study halls in the art room creating self-generated work. That freedom opened me up and allowed me to break out beyond the didactic cycle of facts. I began to understand how I could make a career out of making things. It wasn’t only in the art room that my classmates and I were encouraged to use our minds and think abstractly. Hank Brandt who taught English and Philosophy challenged our ways of thinking and exposed us to concepts so rich and magical. Sometimes these esoteric concepts went over our heads, but he remained diligent and invested in us growing. Chris Hart, who taught us International Relations, gave us a sense of the global 8

foundations classes. I thought I wanted to try architecture because it would allow me to do good in the world and help to contribute to solving the problem of homelessness. It didn’t click, so on a whim I followed some classmates into a graphic design studio one semester and everything I had ever learned and believed clicked for me. I could make meaning.

I could find ways to do good with my skills and passion. I not only could express through form, but through words as well. Never had I felt so at home. And all those lessons I learned at O’Neal came back and were expanded further and further. I came out of NC State knowing that I wanted to move to New York and design books. It had always been in me even back in lower school when we did the cuneiform.

Upon graduation, I moved to New York and began working at Penguin Books as a junior designer for book covers.

I spent 5 years there designing covers for fiction and nonfiction books. I left to pursue a graduate degree at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, a school that is built on selfgenerated work. I wanted to inspire and educate, so I pursued my MFA with the intention of becoming a teacher. Having a studio and the pressure to create work expanded me more and I left Michigan a different designer. My thesis was about connection and how design can create awareness and community rather than feed the consumption of capitalism. All these nascent ideas I had growing up at O’Neal came together. I went back to New York and instead of teaching worked for cultural institutions as a designer. I needed my work to transcend advertising and inspire people. I loved supporting the culture of NY and helping people to learn and grow, but I missed books. In 2008, I moved back into publishing at Random House and have been art directing practical non-fiction ever since. I design packages of books that inspire, heal, and help people. O’Neal gave me the foundation to pursue my interests and to extend beyond myself. Because of the teachers, students, friends, and the institution of O'Neal, I was able to find my path."

Mr. Mauser and Mrs. Whitman taught us math and that may seem like a bland world of numbers, but they both in their own ways used compassion to show us that there are answers and we can find them even if it seems hard. What I am trying to say here is that O’Neal is about the people and the way we all came together to achieve what was possible in each of us. Coming out of O’Neal, I knew I wanted to make meaning in the world, to touch others, and to continue to grow as I had over those years.

By the time I was ready to apply for college, I had such a rich and holistic education. I had a portfolio of personal artwork that was diverse and illustrated that I had developed a lot of skills. In addition, I understood the existential philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard, was a finalist in the Model UN competition with Eric Gilchrist, went to Spain and toured the Alhambra with Mr. Mauser, and so much more—all because I was supported and encouraged every step of the way at O’Neal. I got into every college I applied to including The School of Visual Arts, Duke University, The Art Institute of Boston, Savannah College of Art and Design, and a few others. After all the years of being at O’Neal, I wasn’t ready to move to a big city, so I settled on the school that was close to home, North Carolina State University, School of Design. During my first year, I was able to explore all the different disciplines in my

Douglas Gordon '98, cinematographer and filmmaker, reflects on his journey -- " I have always been interested in cinema since I can remember, but it wasn’t until I picked up a motion picture camera in college that I realized my passion for it—a confluence of my love for art, collaboration, technology, history, science, sociology, psychology…As I began to work in the craft, I found myself drawn to cinematography."

After graduating from O’Neal, Douglas attended UNC Chapel Hill and the expectation was to follow in the footsteps of his father and both grandfathers and pursue a career in medicine. There was always this pull to do something different. Halfway through his junior year, he listened to that inner voice and changed course. "I began to take every course in the Department of Communication and things began to click," says Douglas. "I loved everything about the filmmaking process, but mostly I loved being behind the camera…the collaborative nature of it, the physical dance of operating a camera, the creative process of making images, the ability to emote through images. The first film I shot ever was as a student at Carolina, and from there, I knew what I wanted to do in life. After graduating from Carolina, I spent some time in Los Angeles before attending Boston University where I received my MFA in Film Production."

In 1995, his mother introduced him to a small film called The Brothers McMullen. "This film made by Edward Burns for $24000 about three brothers in Long Island was my introduction to Independent Cinema," claims Douglas. "This was the first time I came to understand that there were films made outside of Hollywood about ’normal’ people without millions of dollars backing them."

Douglas continues, "O’Neal provided me with great teachers. Teachers who encouraged

me during my time and helped foster a strong sense of belief in myself. Teachers like Father John Nicola, Beth Whitman, Hank Brandt and George Mauser whose passion and guidance has stuck with me all of these years later.

Over the years, I have worked on a number of incredible projects but the true highlights have been the opportunities to collaborate with great people in interesting places and the friendships that come from these shared experiences. Additionally, I'm privileged to help tell stories through the camera and there are often moments when this job feels special whether it's filming a family whose child is battling cancer, or physicians who helped develop a COVID vaccine, or a 7 time Super Bowl champ who's selling Under Armour products."

Douglas' plans for the future are simply to keep working and growing as a filmmaker and ultimately transition into feature film production.

...for a Hike.

he O’Neal Community, revels on the “communities within” such as the lower school families who join Paula Daigle on her monthly “Lower School Hikes”.

Lower School teachers are often asked about holding after school clubs and activities to further enrich the students. PreK-3 teacher Paula Daigle wanted to offer something outdoors, so she decided to start a Lower School Hiking Club. Ms. Daigle schedules one hike a month on a Saturday morning at a nature venue that welcomes informal groups.

“My original thought was that parents would drop their children off to hike with me, but never once have I had a parent not be there with their child for the whole hike,” says Mrs. Daigle. The first hike saw six families attending. As they progressed, it is normal to see 20 to 30 different families participate in the morning adventure. Not only are there the lower school students, but their siblings also attend and they may range from middle school age to infant.

Mrs. Daigle has hosted hikes at Mule Pond Farm in Cameron, Weymouth Woods, and Caroken Farm (O’Neal’s Riggsbee/Davidson family) in Carthage. She plans to venture further to places like Raven Rock in Lillington this year.

Activities using compasses or magnifying glasses are always enjoyed as well as scavenger hunts.

“We have many repeat families,” says Mrs. Daigle, “but for every hike, there’s always someone new who joins us.”

The SISU War Hammer was introduced to the track team by Head Coach Marcus Millard as a rally tool. An indestructible training weapon, the hammer head is constructed with sevengauge steel. The Finnish rallying cry “SISU” is etched on it. Though there is no exact equivalent to its meaning in English, it can be translated as stubborn determination and serves as a reminder to continue on and that every strike counts.

Unwavering determination comes from within as well as the support of those who surround you. Community is important and is the foundation of everything O'Neal.

Row Them In, Until the End

Using support and motivation to strengthen O'Neal's running teams.

he youngest sports for O’Neal, the running teams – track and field and cross country – portray the aspect of community, and the roles within, at O’Neal. Cross Country sees individuals vying for the top five places to represent the School at conference & state championships. “Even though it is a team sport, it’s really the individual conquering the individual,” says Cross Country Coach Heather Weeks. “We work to control the controllables and that starts with attitude.” Older student-athletes often take the younger

ones under their wing for encouragement while younger team members yearn to come and cheer on their older A team members in competition. This past fall saw one of the larger teams to date with 18. The boys went on to place third in the state championship.

Students join the cross country team for different reasons. It’s enlightening to see a student-athlete who favors another sport join the team for conditioning only to evolve into setting their own personal goals of speed and performance. For a cross country

The cross country team has been complemented by other coaches on the way they cheer on runners in competing teams and demonstrating good sportsmanship such as escorting and cheering a special needs runner to the finish line unprompted, in addition to holding up their own team members.

Senior Nathan Brianas enjoys being in a leadership position on the running teams. Having come to O’Neal as a freshman, the seniors were very supportive of him and he in turn understands and values the role of leadership on the team. “As much as I am focused on my performance, I have to get everyone else focused too,” he states. Senior Morin Samples has been running cross country since the seventh grade.

She remarks, “I have been looking forward to taking a leadership position with cross country so that I can help continue many of the traditions with the team like organizing the spaghetti supper before the conference championship meet.

Events such as these are special to me and I want others to enjoy them like I do.”

Sophomore Grace Simpson comments, “In cross country it’s hard to stay motivated on your own. You have to encourage one another to keep going.” Each week during the cross country season, the coaches discuss the efforts of the runners and award a team member with “Nacho” the stuffed Falcon in recognition.

Head Coach Marcus Millard described the track and field program as “the epitome of diversity”. Student-athletes that fall into many different circles of demographics, cultures, personalities and priorities come together on the track and field team and create a special bond that cannot be unnoticed when you see team members together. Multiple layers of support are enabled to nurture the team and render success. It starts with Layer #1 – the five coaches.

Layer #2 – school administration, athletic trainers and teachers supporting the team in aspects on and off the field as well as showing up for the meets. Layer #3 – the parents always offering help, and being present whether it’s hot or cold, rain or shine.

“It’s layers of people helping people,” reflects Coach Millard.

“The state championship meet was a great example. Representing O’Neal were 44 of our student-athletes competing, 25 or more parents and around 75 other O’Neal Falcons in the sidelines there for support. Some events needed volunteers of which our parents/ staff stepped up to handle. A runner on another team collapses and an O’Neal parent, who is a physician, attends to them.

For every event, parents and fellow teammates would send the runners off with fist bumps and cheers. “I’ve had many great things happen in my life,” says Coach Millard, “but the state championship meet was quite possibly the best. It wasn’t just one thing, it was everything.”

combination of the upper and middle school student-athletes on the team gives the opportunity for them to bond and to show leadership. From the coaches to all of the ‘team moms’, we are all there to support each other and pull each other up. We are all one family, one team.

The track team has successfully created a culture of continuous improvement. “There’s a process for success. It’s not goal displaced,” says Coach Millard.

Sophomore team member Charlie Kuzma states, “We have an understanding of each other. It’s a mixture of all personalities coming together for one common goal. It’s cool to see this. We have really good student leaders that help bring the team together and are great at analyzing the situation and communicating.”

O’Neal Junior Kanye McKeithen joined the track team with Coach Millard and they both learned together. Kanye observed how Coach Millard calmly handled the bumps in the road in the beginning as he himself learned the process. Kanye reflects, “Coach Millard likes to use the word ‘transcend’ and we would repeat it as if it were a funny term, but really I use it to motivate myself to do better and to be a better teammate.”

Senior Eland Miller says, “At meets, when you don’t have an event, you’re cheering someone else on. We especially encourage our new team members to have this routine at meets. I’ve been on the track team for five years and I do it to have a good time. Jalen and I have been on the team together the whole time. It helps to build long lasting friendships.”

have ‘the starters’ or the first string, they are sometimes disconnected from the team because they are more focused on their performance.

In track, no matter your skill level, everyone is essentially the same because you’re running more against yourself.

The team aspect is super important compared to other sports.”

for building a family-like culture among the running teams by organizing pre-meets and potluck dinners. He also introduced the concept of rowing in the runners, but it never quite took hold primarily because a huge amount of the leadership - team captainswere competing in the 4x4, the last event.

Whether it be the coaches, availability of the captains, gratitude of being able to compete during a pandemic, or a combination of it all, the act of “rowing in the runner” was realized in 2021. “The whole team lines up on the last curve. They sit as if they are rowing in a boat. We took up the whole curve because our team is so big (48 strong)," says Senior Caelan McHarney. “We all have respect for one another and the hard work we put in, whether it be optional Sunday practice at North Moore High School’s track or workouts in the heat. It’s about perception. We don’t feel like we HAVE to row our teammates in, we are excited to support them as one team.”

When traveling to meets, the team members are assigned to buses according to their role – sprinter, distance runner, thrower – as opposed to grade or skill level.

Jalen Lindsey concludes, “I’ve heard coaches on other teams comment, ‘I want our school to be like O’Neal because of the passion, dedication, determination and demonstration of community that you all have, I want that for my school.’”

The one activity that stands out for all is “rowing the runners in” for the last event of the meet – the 4x4. Spectators have commented that it brings chills it is so symbolic of the support the team has for one another. Former coach Matt McMurray has been credited

3D PRINTING Focuses on Community

T

his semester in 3D printing, units in the curriculum focused on functional and inspirational projects for others in the community. From original gifts for teachers, classmates, and family to COVID inspired functional designs, students learned new skills in Computer Aided Design and 3D printing while focusing on the needs of our community.

During the initial stages of the Pandemic, O’Neal 3D printers went to work, printing face shield and mask components. With COVID still a large part of the world today, 3D students partnered to design original prototypes that could be used to combat COVID. From replicas of ventilator splitters to a variety of multi-tools that would aid individuals in performing everyday tasks hands free, students discovered how 3D printing is used to make a positive impact on the community and assist those around us.

The great poet Emily Dickinson wrote, "hope is the thing with feathers." Long before Ms. Dickinson recognized the beauty of birds, our feathered friends were regarded as a representation of hope and a reminder of the beauty and power of nature.

Appreciation of the outdoors and symbols of hope are especially important as we learn to navigate life during the Pandemic. With this idea in mind, US 3D printing students participated in the Birds of Hope project. The goal of this initiative is to provide a token reminder of hope to individuals unable to enjoy life outside of their homes due to COVID restrictions. The 3D printed birds were designed to serve as reminders to others to maintain feelings of hope during times of adversity.

This semester, students also participated in the IC3D 3D Printing Toys for Tots program. They joined more than four hundred “printing elves” across the nation. To date, the combined nationwide effort successfully printed more than 50,000 toys.

The school printers ran non-stop for weeks churning out The O’Neal School’s contribution to the program. Stock files for the toys were provided, but 3D students learned the skills to make the official Toys for Tots designs, including projects with articulated movement created using hinges. Students will ship the final prints for distribution by area hubs to children for the holidays.

You may see several brightly colored birds adorning the windows of classrooms and community spaces hanging in windows as symbols of hope. Students also gave birds to a few residents from Belle Meade, a senior living facility in Southern Pines, for them to enjoy. The nationwide project grew out of the Birds of Hope Project from the Paulson Institute, a Chicago based center that “promotes sustainable economic growth and a cleaner environment around the world.”

Looking ahead, next semester’s 3D printing class will continue to focus on the needs of the community. They’ll design and print birdhouses for campus, revisit teacher classroom requests and develop prototypes to meet those identified needs. Students will also design products based on specific student needs and investigate how 3D printing can aid children and adults with physical challenges and disabilities.

Molly Kuzma (right), the valedictorian for the Class of 2021, is attending Johns Hopkins University and is running on the women's track and field and cross country teams. Her major is chemistry with a minor in psychology.

Durnig her time at O'Neal, Molly was a 3-season athlete with the addition of swimming in the winter to go between her cross country in the fall and track and field in the spring. O'Neal saw her as a NCISAA Champion, 4-time NCISAA All-State team member and 3-time Tri-TAC conference champion.

She was just as successful in the classroom as a Holmberg Scholar, AP Scholar with distinction, Cum Laude Society member as well as many other accolades.

I came from a much smaller school where there were only three girls on the cross country team.
