he coming theatre season in Kamloops is taking a look into the past and a look into ourselves, often with a timely soundtrack.

The first show of the new season will be the world premiere of Made in Italy

by Farren Timoteo, who also stars. The one-man show’s lead character “has the heart of Rocky Balboa and the dance moves and hair of John Travolta,” said Daryl Cloran, artistic director of Western Canada Theatre. The comedy will feature music of the ‘70s as well as classic Italian songs. Made in Italy will run at the Pavilion Theatre Sept. 8 to 24.

Next up and further back in time is Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward, a comedy about a séance gone awry when the summoned dead first wife refuses to leave. Blithe Spirit will be at the Sagebrush Theatre Oct. 6 to 15. A preview performed by Anita Wittenberg as the enthusiastic medium and Kelsey Gilker as the slightly uptight second wife demonstrated the comedic power of their opposing personalities.

New trades building proposed by TRU Building plan awaiting approval by provincial government Jim Elliot NEWS EDITOR Ω The university is looking to add some floor space for the trades.

The initial stages for a new trades building on campus are underway, pending a decision by the provincial government on contributing half of the costs.

“Right now we have notional approval from the [Ministry of Advanced Education] for up to $15 million for the building, but we don’t have formal approval yet,” said TRU’s Vice President Finance Matt Milovick.

The entire project will cost $30 million, with TRU expected to fund half of it, according to Milovick.

The project will not move forward unless the B.C. government contributes to it.

According to Milovick, TRU submitted their business case outlining their plans for the new building to the government on Feb. 26.

If the plan is approved, the new building will be constructed behind the existing trades building, an area that Milovick said is unlikely to be used for anything else, leaving free other areas on campus for further development.

Milovick said that the proposed building would be approximately 50,000 square feet, which is about

TRUSU has announced the 2016 general election, where student executives and representatives are elected.

The election gets underway on March 9, when the nomination period begins. Students interested in running can pick up nomination packages at the TRUSU member services desk.

After the nomination period ends on March 22, candidates will attend an all-candidates meeting to receive more information about the process. Candidate postings are released the following day on March 23 and the campaign period begins.

An all-candidates forum will take place on March 25 at 4 p.m. and voting will take place over three days from March 30 to April 1.

“It’s a highly efficient building.

It’ll meet all our sustainability goals and it will really help us expand our trades programs into areas that need to be expanded,” Milovick said.

When asked why the university was expanding trades rather than any other program, Milovick said that the new building responds to the province’s Skills Gap plan and allows TRU to address overflow from existing trades courses while also creating new ones.

“We have a lot of demand for trades that we really cannot fulfill.

Our current building is over-utilized and we need more space.

We really want to start to focus on things like power engineering and instrumentation,” Milovick said.

Although it does fit in with government mandates and government approval and funds will be necessary for the project, Milovick said that the plan to expand the building originated at TRU. Milovick said that the expansion of trades building space has been on TRU’s to-do list for at least five years.

If approved and constructed, the new trades building would be the first new standalone building on campus since 2011, when the House of Learning was completed.

Faculty association backs down with meme contest Jim Elliot NEWS EDITOR Ω The university administration-bashing meme contest hosted by the TRU Faculty Association (TRUFA), ended as abruptly as it began last week.

The contest, which was hosted on trutalk.ca, a public forum for faculty members, was taken down Feb. 24.

According to the website, the creator of the meme that received the most likes will still receive the prize: a coupon to the cafeteria.

TRUFA’s statement on the contest page reads: “In a meeting earlier today, Faculty Association’s Table Officers decided that the TRUFA Meme Contest

should finish early. TRU faculty views about the University had already been expressed in the first three days of the contest, and Table Officers felt that there was no need to continue.”

One of the memes featured an image of one of TRU’s new promotional “find your TRU” banners altered to read “fund your TRU.” The contest was concluded shortly before the official launch of TRU’s new brand.

The critical content of the memes is difficult to reconcile with the assurances from the faculty and administration that they would cooperate to solve any problems remaining after the ratification of their collective bargaining agreement.

Making the case for online voting Sean Brady EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Ω TRUSU has called its general election and soon we’ll be casting a ballot and voting in a new set of student representatives. Well, at least some of us will. If history is any indication, a vast majority of students won’t vote at all. In last year’s election, just nine per cent of students showed up to vote.

With turnout figures that low, something needs to change. While I understand that change doesn’t happen quickly, TRUSU’s polling figures have been dismal for a long time. Last year’s nine per cent isn’t even our worst showing – in 2013 only 7.5 per cent of students voted. How low does turnout have to go before the legitimacy of our elected student government comes into question? I don’t want to find out.

Instead, let’s make a change and turn things around in a way that makes voting more accessible far into the future. While dumping more time and money into campaigning might do something to bring students back to the polls in

the short term, it’s not the fundamental change that is required to get students engaged.

Instead? Let’s start running our student elections online. We certainly wouldn’t be the first. A cursory search online reveals dozens of Canadian universities running their student elections online, including Wilfrid Laurier University, Queen’s University, the University of Toronto, UBC and many others.

But what about security and privacy? Well, students already manage a number of private and secure things online through their myTRU account. Grades, transcripts, payment information, schedules and other personal information is accessible online already. The “one student equals one account” requirement of online voting is already met through the university.

As other universities have done, such as those mentioned above, the voting system to-be could link up with existing student logins, making administration, security and accountability far less of a concern.

And not only does online voting make student elections more accessible, it also brings democracy into

other campus organizations. UBC, for example, conducted 22 separate elections for various student groups on campus in 2015, all through its online voting system.

So will online voting really change things? Other test cases show that yes, bringing in online voting will have an impact. Wilfrid Laurier University improved their voter turnout by 158 per cent from the previous year when they held their first online election in 2011.

A lot of the concerns around introducing online voting among the general population revolve around serving all demographics, specifically older generations that do not use the Internet as frequently as younger generations. At TRU, more than 90 per cent of students are below 40 years old, meaning it’s unlikely that online voting would be shutting out voters.

At any rate, the status quo won’t cut it. To the union’s credit, this year the voting period has been extended from two days to three. If it turns out one extra day of voting improves turnout significantly, maybe there’s hope for the paper ballot after all, but I don’t think that’ll do it. editor@truomega.ca

Health and Wellness Survey to be distributed to students

NCHA survey applied to campus for the first time since 2013 Jim Elliot NEWS EDITOR Ω TRU’s Wellness Centre will be distributing a survey in order to assess the health and wellness of students and tailor their programs to help students overcome issues such as stress, illness and drug use.

On March 7, all TRU students over the age of 18 will be receiving the survey via their myTRU email address. The survey will remain open until March 27. Students who complete the survey are entered into four cash prize draws with prizes ranging from $50 to $200.

The survey asks questions about exercise and nutrition, sexual health, mental health, stress and substance use.

According to Chelsea Corsi, TRU’s Wellness Coordinator, the survey will take approximately 20 minutes for students to complete.

When the survey was last given to students at TRU in 2013, it found that stress, sleep difficulties and anxiety were the three factors which impacted academic performance on campus the most severely, Corsi said.

Corsi also said that students wanted information on managing these issues for both themselves and

their friends.

Some Wellness Centre initiatives that came about as a result of the 2013 data are the St. John Ambulance therapy dogs that visit campus every Thursday, several physical activity initiatives and a PowerPoint campaign on mental health.

“We used the data directly from the NCHA (National College Health Assessment) and said if you’re feeling this way, if you’re feeling overwhelmed and tired, you’re not alone, here’s how we can help you,” Corsi said.

The constant rotation of TRU’s student body will make it difficult to track the effectiveness of Wellness Centre programs across the 2013 and 2016 surveys, but Corsi hopes that students felt well-informed about mental health risks.

“I’m hoping that students will respond saying yes, they have provided me information about stress management,” Corsi said.

Corsi enlisted the help of nursing students Sharon Singh, Maysie Aldana, Katie Gleboff, Michelle Swift and Karina Houston to help boost student engagement with the survey.

“We’ll have information and resources available while we are there promoting the survey,” Houston said.

Gleboff said that the promotion of the survey was a different approach to nursing than what is usually taught in their classes, which she

described as community-based rather than scientific.

“It’s a completely different kind of mindset and there are much bigger goals to it. You really have to build on the community’s strength and really see what they need, rather than just giving them stuff because we think it’s good, you’ve really got to ask them and see what they’re

struggling with,” Gleboff said.

“The whole point of this is so that the students can use their voice and so that they’re heard and we can see what they’re struggling with and ensure our resources are either still effective or what we can do to improve them,” Houston said when asked why she thought the survey was important.

OneMatch donor event comes back to TRU

WolfPack baseball coach hopes for an even better turnout than last year Dominique Bayens CONTRIBUTOR Ω When TRU baseball pitching coach Alex Reid’s stepsister was diagnosed with leukemia, she received life-saving stem cell treatment from a European donor.

“My sister was only 30 years old.

It came out of nowhere. Her blood brother wasn’t a close enough match, so she was actually a match with somebody – I think it was in the Ukraine,” Reid said.

Watching his stepsister’s recovery inspired Reid to raise awareness about stem cell donation, leading to

TRU’s biggest ever OneMatch stem cell swabbing event last year.

“I thought it would be a good time to try and bring awareness and hopefully be able to save some people’s lives because now, a year later, she’s 100 per cent healthy because she found a stem cell match,” Reid said.

“We had 350 people come out last year. There was a lineup out the door,” he said.

Reid hopes to beat the success of last year’s event with another OneMatch drive on Wednesday, March 9.

“I would love to make it bigger than last year,” he said. “It was

absolutely incredible, the amount of response we had from the athletes and students at TRU.” However, unlike donating blood, the same people cannot register again, since they’re already in the registry.

“The people that came last year can’t come this year. Once you’re in, you’re in,” Reid said.

“Last year most of the people who were coming were people connected to TRU athletics somehow.

We didn’t get tons of international students or people outside of the Kamloops community, so I’m really trying to hit that demographic,” he said.

Reid said that the swabbing process is easy and non-invasive.

“All they do is swab all four sections of your cheeks and that’s it, you’re done. If you ever become a match, you’ll get contacted down the road,” he said.

Reid said he hoped the event would make people more knowledgeable about stem cell donation.

“Everyone knows about blood drives and blood donations, but no one really knows about stem cells.”

“Stem cells are the next thing that can really save people’s lives,” he said.

“My sister went from being super sick with leukemia…now she’s taking her daughters to school and living at home and everything’s 100 per cent normal.”

The OneMatch swabbing event is

for any person between the ages of 17 and 35.

The event will be held on March 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second floor of the Tournament Capital Centre.

The third-year TRU nursing students have also partnered with OneMatch for a stem cell network drive on Tuesday, March 8. That event will be held in Old Main from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Growing fentanyl concerns in Kamloops A wave of fentanyl-related fatalities in Kamloops sparks public outcry and discussion Wade Tomko NEWS EDITOR Ω With a wave of opiate-related overdoses hitting the province in recent months, much attention from the media and the public has been focused on one drug in particular.

Causing an estimated 139 deaths last year in this province alone, according to the B.C. Coroners Service, the synthetic opioid fentanyl has caused concern within the Kamloops community. Last

year there were seven reported fatalities linked to illicit opiate overdoses. Estimates on the actual number of overdose fatalities tend to be higher, however, according to the Phoenix Centre’s Osprey House supervisor Patrick McDonald.

The Phoenix Centre, founded in 1973, focuses on drug and alcohol addiction services, while its Osprey House works in partnership with the Elizabeth Fry Society to provide support services, specifically for youth who have substance abuse issues.

“I wish that there was a little

more awareness being made of the numbers of deaths,” McDonald said. “If a drunk driver hits a guy, then everyone is like ‘hey a drunk driver,’ but there are other things that people are way less vocal about. There has always been a stigma attached.”

Toward the Heart, a website that is part of the provincial harm reduction program, claims fentanyl to be 50-100 times more toxic than other opioids, and according to McDonald, fentanyl has been the cause of at least three fatalities in Kamloops since the new year as

well. Ken Salter, an outreach worker with ASK Wellness claims that there have been even more deaths since then.

“There was another fatality on Cherry Avenue last Saturday night (Feb. 20). Nobody said anything about it,” Salter said. “There was one before that a couple weeks ago at the Duchess. Nobody has said anything about it, either.”

Though Salter believes that media coverage of fentanyl-related overdoses and fatalities in Kamloops has not been adequate, he said the blame lies with Interior Health and the RCMP for not divulging the actual number of overdoses.

However, getting a handle on the real number may be more difficult than it sounds. Salter claims that only a select few individuals who overdose seek medical treatment immediately afterwards.

“I would say only about 20 per cent of them even make it to the hospital, because they overdose and they either wake up or somebody uses Narcan (brand name naloxone) on them and they wake up and generally they don’t go to the hospital,” Salter said. “That is really dangerous with fentanyl, because it has a fairly long half-life.”

In fact, because of fentanyl’s long half-life, anti-overdose medication like naloxone often wears off before the opiate, putting one in danger of another overdose. According to Salter, the best way to prevent a subsequent overdose is to seek medical care immediately.

Most cases of fentanyl overdoses

involve the drug being cut with OxyContin, a highly addictive pharmaceutical painkiller, McDonald said. He has also heard of other cases throughout the province of fentanyl being mixed in with other drugs, including marijuana and cocaine.

McDonald emphasized that those who purchase drugs off the street should practise harm-reduction techniques, such as using a testing kit and making sure they always know what exactly they are using.

This sentiment is echoed by TRU’s Wellness Centre as well, who has coordinated with both ASK Wellness and the Phoenix Centre on this issue.

Speaking on behalf of the TRU Wellness Centre, Dean of Students Christine Adam said that much of the information being offered to students comes from sources such as Toward the Heart and Know Your Source, websites in partnership with the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

Though Adam recommends abstinence, she said that there are also techniques to reduce risks if you do happen to use illicit drugs.

“So if you have an opiate addiction, these are the things that you should be considering. Know your source, consider seeing your doctor and getting a take-home naloxone kit and don’t use alone,” she said.

Students looking to learn more about fentanyl and harm reduction techniques can find information regarding such topics on TRU Wellness Centre’s website as well as on their social media pages.

TRU Law students shadow B.C. court judges

Provincial and supreme court judge shadow provided a special opporunity for students Nikki Fredrikson CONTRIBUTOR Ω While most students took a break or went home over reading break, 22 students from TRU Law spent the week shadowing B.C. judges.

The students spent the day in groups of three, with two lower-level students and one upper-level student discussing the judicial system with their assigned judge. For second-year Greg von Ewan, his experience was different from most students’, as his assigned judge, Leonard S. Marchand was stationed in Merritt.

“My favourite part about it was the judge himself picked us up and drove us to and from Merritt that day, which essentially meant we got an hour of uninterrupted [one-on-one time with the judge],” von Ewan said.

The judge shadowing program allowed students the chance to meet judges and see them in their day-to-day work environment,

an opportunity not provided by regular law school classes. The program allowed students to get access to justice issues, see the operations of the courtroom firsthand and learn from the judges. Von Ewan said that the experience provided him with an understanding of how the justice system works better than he would have had from just taking classes.

The program was created by TRU Law’s Judge in Residence, retired Justice Richard Blair with the help of Director of Career Services Christi McAuley.

“I think this is an unparalleled opportunity for students to actually meet with a judge, talk to a judge, get a feeling of how decisions are made. In particular, [this is] going to help them when they’re in court later to understand how the judicial process works from the judge’s perspective,” McAuley said.

According to Justice Blair, the program gives students a “proximity, closeness and realization of what these people are.” The

program allows students to see “what the judges do and how they do it,” Justice Blair said.

The program is available to any law student at TRU. With no application necessary, the opportunity to get face-to-face time with a judge is accessible to all the students. Priority is given to third-year students and those who haven’t done the program before.

The opportunity has allowed students such as von Ewan to get valuable advice and knowledge about the court system they’d otherwise never be exposed to.

For students participating in the judge shadowing programs, the advice will leave a lasting impression on them as they continue their educations.

“Remind yourself at all times that you’re a person at the end of the day. So are your clients and the people that might come before you looking for justice. It’s really important not to forget that fact because it can so easily and quickly become a debate about numbers, a debate about money.

It’s easy to lose sight of the fact

that these are real people and real people’s lives,” von Ewan said when asked what the best advice he received from the program was.

The program is set to run again,

for the third time, next February during reading break. Justice Blair and Christi McAuley intend for this opportunity to become an annual program for TRU Law students.

Get tested for STIs online

BC Centre for Disease Control launches online testing service for sexually transmitted infections Wade Tomko NEWS EDITOR Ω With the help of the Interior Health Authority and LifeLabs, the BC Centre for Disease Control’s new online STI testing service is now available in Kamloops. GetCheckedOnline will allow individuals to

requisition lab tests and view the results from the privacy of their own home.

The service has gained approximately 2,000 individual accounts since it started about 18 months ago in Vancouver, according to Maja Karlsson, Interior Health’s HIV Services program manager.

Currently, residents of Kamloops require the promotional code,

“thompson,” to create an account on GetCheckedOnline.

Designed to allow easier access to STI testing in B.C., the testing service first presents individuals with a questionnaire on their sexual history after creating an account, and depending on the results, then allows them to requisition lab tests.

take the requisition form to and get tested by a participating lab, Karlsson says that the service allows individuals in remote locations or in difficult situations, as well as those wishing for more privacy, to still have access to services they might need.

“For STIs, it is often a challenging conversation for people to have with their healthcare provider, and so this is one way to reduce the barrier for that,” Karlsson said.

After being tested at a lab, such as the Kamloops LifeLabs location on Tranquille Road, individuals will have to wait about a week to get their results, Karlsson said.

From their own home, they will be able to view the results and take further action from there if necessary. Positive and inconclusive results are always looked into by the B.C. CDC, however, with a registered nurse reaching out to the individual to encourage them to either talk to a healthcare provider in the case of a positive result or requisition for the lab work to be redone in the case of an inconclusive result.

“If it is that there’s a positive test, let’s say it is a positive test for chlamydia, which is actually

probably the most common positive test that we are anticipating, then the individual and the nurse will then decide where he or she wants to go for treatment,” Karlsson said.

Though the B.C. CDC will recommend partnered clinics to individuals in need of treatment, they are in no way obliged to seek professional care at these locations, Karlsson said.

TRU’s Wellness Centre offers their own form of STI testing, though the testing service on campus primarily focuses on HIV, according to TRU Wellness Coordinator Chelsea Corsi.

TRU Wellness, in partnership with TRU Health Services and a team of nurses from the Kamloops Public Health Unit have been offering free monthly testing on campus for the last two years, Corsi said.

On the last Thursday of every month, nurses come to campus and offer free and confidential HIV testing using either the rapid-HIV test or actual blood draws.

Students can book appointments for testing through TRU Health Services at 250-828-5126, or drop-in if there is space.

A musical tribute to Patsy Cline WCT’s tribute invites Kamloops to reminisce about the country singer’s life and music Annie Slizak COPY EDITOR Ω The Sagebrush Theatre saw the opening of Western Canada Theatre’s production of A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline this past weekend.

The set includes three largerthan-life, domineering transistor radios that act as walls on one side of the stage, and a tall radio booth, complete with an “On Air” illuminated sign, on the other. Despite these eye-catching set pieces, an audience’s attention is nevertheless drawn to centre stage, where a fourpiece band is set up, and remains throughout the entire play.

The band is made up of musicians almost exclusively from Kamloops, with Richard Graham on percussion, Michael Turner on standup bass and Kris Ruston on bass and guitar (both electric and steel pedal). Music director David Archibald is the only non-local in the band, coming all the way from Newburgh, Ont. to play guitar, banjo and keys.

The play itself is the least play-like production Western Canada Theatre has put on this season. It lacks a plot and any real storyline, instead focusing on being a musical tribute punctuated with tidbits from Cline’s life.

Not knowing much about the

country singer’s career going in, I do not feel that I gained any more significant insight into her life by the time I left the theatre.

Patsy Cline is played by Alison MacDonald. MacDonald has a beautiful voice that is well-suited to country music. Of course, Cline was such a big star for a reason, and therefore it is difficult to perfectly imitate her unique and strong voice. Nevertheless, MacDonald gives a wonderful tribute to some of Cline’s most famous ballads, including I Fall to Pieces, Crazy and Just a Closer Walk With Thee.

A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline is a two-person show, not

including the band. MacDonald’s co-actor is Tyler Murree, who plays Little Big Man, the radio talk show host who narrates the play. Murree also plays the host of Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall and a Vegas theatre. An actor in this role must be able to adapt his style to various different personas, and Murree is able to fill those shoes energetically.

The play is formatted in a radio show style, complete with the weather, news and sports as well as various commercials. The tragic news of Cline’s plane going down is delivered in a “this just in” news bulletin that allows the audience to feel an abrupt shock similar to

that which must have swept over radio listeners on March 3, 1963.

The play is tied up quickly after the news of Cline’s death, but it is not without a final reverent reprise of Just a Closer Walk With Thee sung by MacDonald clothed in a white dress. It is emotional yet peaceful, and gives audience members a sense of closure as they leave the theatre.

Tickets for A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline are available at the Kamloops Live! Box Office or at kamloopslive.ca. The show runs until March 5 at the Sagebrush Theatre, after which it will head to Vernon; Chilliwack and Gananoque, Ont.

Western Canada Theatre’s 2016-17 season announced Shows this upcoming season take a step into the past, but all focus on finding one’s identity Marlys Klossner ARTS EDITOR Ω CONTINUED (COVER) Shakespeare will be returning to Western Canada Theatre after a six-year hiatus with A Comedy of Errors. With only five actors in a play of 17 characters, the hilarity will be amped up by funny costume changes and the fast pace of every actor switching between several characters mid-scene. A Comedy of Errors will run Jan. 26 to Feb. 4, 2017, and is a story of mistaken identity as two sets of twins set out to reunite with their kin.

Following the footsteps of WCT’s A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, Ring of Fire by Richard Maltby Jr. will be all about “the man in black” himself, Johnny Cash. After showing in Kamloops Feb. 23 to March 4, 2017, the play will also tour Chilliwack, Vernon, Nelson and Cranbrook.

The (Re)Imagine series will feature two productions about the relationship between indigenous

peoples and white settlers. The first, from April 6 to 15, 2017, will be the world premiere of Daryl Cloran’s play adaptation of the book The Cure for Death by Lightning by Gail Anderson-Dargatz. In The Cure for Death by Lightning, 15-year-old Beth Weeks comes of age post-Second World War when some scary things are happening to other young native girls on the West Coast. It will be performed at the Sagebrush.

On May 4 to 13, 2017 at the Pavilion Theatre some of the same cast of The Cure for Death by Lightning will return to the stage in Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth by Hayden Taylor, a story of two native sisters, one who stays on the reservation and one who is adopted by a white family. When the two reunite as adults for their mother’s funeral, they have to deal with their very different pasts and decide where to go from there.

The High Wire Festival this year is jumping into an unexpected medium: podcasting. The festival has been a place for experimental theatre and for this Oct. 22 and 23, 2016, Western Canada Theatre is

looking for the true stories of everyday Kamloopsians about places in town that were the setting for impactful things in their lives. Selected stories will be produced as theatrical podcasts with the idea that listeners will actually explore the places in Kamloops while they listen to the stories about them.

Western Canada Theatre is also calling for submissions by B.C. playwrights for live readings and commission consideration in February 2017.

Family-friendly events include a production of The House at Pooh Corner March 4 and 11, 2017 geared towards three- to eightyear-olds and their families, and a Family-Friendly Halloween Dance Party on Oct. 29, 2016, both at the Pavilion Theatre.

The big holiday production, though chronologically in the middle of this list, was announced last for maximum dramatic effect. Last year’s Mary Poppins was the most popular show that Western Canada Theatre has ever run according to Daryl Cloran, so the pressure was on to replicate the success. Mamma Mia! by

Catherine Johnson will be gracing the Sagebrush stage Nov. 24 to Dec. 6, 2016. A preview of one of the songs already had those present for the announcement clapping along.

“All the shows ask questions about identity. They all follow the theme of finding yourself, both within yourself and hopefully finding yourself sitting in this theatre,” Cloran said.

I have never had a problem getting up in front of a crowd.

But this situation was a little different.

I had never been in front of this sort of audience before. Everyone looked at me expectantly as I stepped up to the platform.

I looked back at everyone watching me and tried to forget my nerves. And then I dropped my robe.

When a friend of mine mentioned that she does nude modelling for a little extra cash every week, I was intrigued. After all, who can’t use a little extra cash? Before then I had never even considered the possibility of doing any kind of modelling, but before I knew it she was sending along contact information and I had set up a session for myself.

There are a number of opportunities at TRU for one to get into nude modelling. The Visual Arts department offers some classes in life drawing for which they hire models, and there are also externally-run drop-in classes that take place at TRU where anyone looking to practise drawing the human form can pay a small fee to join a class.

Thankfully, my boyfriend was all for the idea. He said he finds my body beautiful and he wants other people to see what he sees. So that was one of the most important people in my life. What about the others? The night of my session came and I was having dinner with my parents and sister. When my parents asked what I was doing later that evening, I told them – and I have never felt like more of a disappointment.

I don’t think they disagree that it’s art. I think my parents are okay with the concept of people modelling nude for art. What they are not okay with is their daughter modelling nude for art.

Since I don’t completely understand my parents’ disapproval, I can’t completely explain my reasons for doing it. It’s just a really cool life experience, one I am proud and excited to tell people about.

J

enna Cann, a fourth-year English major, also models for these art classes. When she told her family, some of them were not impressed. Cann told me her grandmother said she was “ashamed” of her for doing it.

Some of her family was very supportive, however.

“They thought it was great for confidence and body image and my mom is now saying that she wishes she could try it too,” Cann said.

Cann passed on a piece of wisdom given to her by one of her professors. “Someone told me ‘If you’re not offending your older family members you’re not living your life right,’” she recalled.

This bit of advice has helped me to feel better about my parents’ reactions to my choice.

Before I got to the session, I had a number of worries. Will I know what to do? Will this kill my back? What will people draw? Cann had similar worries.

“I was a little nervous about people judging my body, seeing my stretch marks, my imperfections… I was worried about being judged, but everyone there is absolutely lovely and treats me very respectfully. I get treated better there than I do as a waitress.

Less like a piece of meat,” she said.

A

dam Patrick, a TRU Open Learning student and former life model, had similar things to say about the first time he modelled for a life drawing class.

“One worry was that it would be embarrassing. What if everyone is all weirded out in class?” he said.

Of course, being up on the platform comes with its own set of difficulties. For me, the most difficult part was knowing what to think about while not being able to move a muscle. At first I tried counting to intervals of 60 to see how close I could get to the actual number of minutes. Then I tried to see how high I could count in the various other languages I know, but that too got old fast and I had to figure something else out.

On one of the breaks I sent a text message to Cann, pleading for the answer. She later told me “I usually pick a movie that I know really well and play it in my head. My personal favourite is I like to play ‘Grease’ in my head. Because there’s lots of music and stuff so I can kind of hum in my head to it.”

Patrick has a different approach. “I like to put myself into the method, per se. When I sit in the poses I remember I would think ‘I am a professional right now, being paid to model.’ I need to focus and to relax.”

It feels very important to occupy your mind, because your body is certainly not being occupied. Cann and Patrick both agree that the most difficult part of life modelling is holding poses for long periods of time. My experience was the same. A typical session includes various poses lasting anywhere from one to 20 minutes. This can be very taxing on one’s muscles, so it is recommended that a model stretches between his or her poses to release lactic acid buildup.

It is important to stress how respectful the atmosphere of a life modelling class is.

In fact, the artists were so respectful to me that, during breaks, they would talk amongst themselves and ignore me. This had the opposite effect as intended, however, and it was at this point that I felt the most dehumanized. I am a person, and at this point I am currently robed, why don’t you want to talk to me too? Once I approached them and asked about their work, however, the artists were more than happy to share.

Patrick has also found talking to the artists to be an effective way of overcoming tension.

“I break down those walls of awkwardness by being super overt. So talking after class and saying ‘hey, can I look at what you’ve drawn?’

I’d ask if I could see this or ‘how would you do that?’ Always very positive.”

In the end, life modelling was very rewarding. Getting to see how others see you is a very rare experience. Cann said “it’s just really fun to look at the pictures afterwards and see how the people have drawn you in different ways. It’s just really cool to see what other people see.”

There are many different reasons one might choose to try life modelling. Cann, Patrick and I all had different reasons going in, but as it turns out, none of our experiences ended up being exactly like we had expected. If you choose to try life modelling, be prepared for an intimidating experience, especially the first time, but I encourage you to be confident in your choice. Not everyone will agree with this decision, but it ultimately comes down to what you want to do with your body. After all is said and done, life modelling can an incredibly valuable experience and you should choose to do it for your own reasons, and choose to do it for yourself.

TRU Law student files human rights complaint Sean Brady EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Ω In a series of six posts on his website, second-year TRU Law student Daniel Gallant outlined his complaints against the university that he has taken to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.

Gallant describes his treatment as “schoolyard bullying” and says he’s been the subject of personal attacks from some faculty and students.

Gallant suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and learning-related disabilities and asked for academic accommodations from the school to complete his studies.

Gallant has “deep-rooted damage” as a result of a traumatic childhood. He’s gone from living a life of violent crime and embracing white supremacy to reforming himself. He earned a master’s degree in social work from UNBC, which he described as part of his healing process. He also does work with various organizations and speaks out against radicalization and the right-wing violence he once practised.

Prior to his first year in law school, Gallant met with TRU’s Disability Services Office (DSO)

to ensure that he would receive the accommodations he needs in order to complete his studies.

According to university policy, TRU is obligated to provide academic accommodations “to ensure an accessible and inclusive educational environment to the point of undue hardship” for students with disabilities.

The policy also states that “While the University as a whole will strive to provide appropriate and reasonable accommodations, students with disabilities are nevertheless responsible for meeting their course and program requirements.”

Gallant says an agreement was made with DSO, but that TRU didn’t follow through and that he didn’t receive the promised accommodations until just weeks before his final exam in one course, which accounted for most of his grade.

Gallant received a failing grade for the course and later appealed on the grounds that he wasn’t adequately accommodated. Following his appeal, Gallant said that he confirmed that he would not have to take the class again with the university registrar, but later received a letter from the dean stating that he would have to retake the course.

Now in his second year of law,

Gallant has had to retake the class he failed last year, which he calls another barrier put up by the university in that it added to his workload.

In his Human Rights Tribunal complaint, Gallant is seeking a declaration that he was discriminated against and for there to be “structural change” at the university so that this doesn’t happen to other students.

“Rather they have created barriers and attacked me for raising these issues,” he wrote on his blog.

The posts were later password protected on Friday, Feb. 26.

Gallant said he made the posts inaccessible because after speaking with someone in the law school, he no longer thought the posts were helping his situation and he didn’t want people to think that his experience at TRU was entirely bad.

“It’s not all bad,” Gallant told The Omega. “I do have relationships with some faculty that are supportive.”

Gallant said he’d also received support from students and had their regrets that he was experiencing these problems. He also noted the support he’s received from DSO, which helped facilitate the diagnosis of his disabilities to begin with.

STRONG SEASONS SEND TRU BASKETBALL TO PLAYOFFS Cameron Doherty SPORTS EDITOR Ω The TRU women’s basketball team came into the 2015/16 season with expectations of success from both within and outside the team. With the regular season now in the rearview mirror it is a case of a job well done so far, but there’s plenty more work left to do for the ‘Pack.

TRU came into the season as the reigning division champion and with a roster that only lost one player from the year before they hit the ground running, recording four straight wins before facing their first real obstacle of the season in the form of the Grant MacEwan Griffins.

MacEwan would storm onto the TCC court winning both games.

Showing their veteran presence TRU rebounded to win nine of their next ten games, including returning the favour to MacEwan by taking both games that the teams played in Edmonton. Those wins wouldn’t be enough for TRU to capture the division title however, as they won only two of their last four games to finish the year second in the Explorer division. They now face a tough road match-up with the University of Alberta in the playoffs.

The team has found its success through the combination of a balanced scoring attack, a stifling defence and strong rebounding. The ‘Pack have three players that average double digits in points-per-game and are able to combine a strong paint presence while also spreading

the floor and attempting more three-pointers than any other team in the conference.

The 2015/16 version of the men’s TRU WolfPack basketball team was able to do something that they had never accomplished before, capture a banner as the Explorer division champions. The ‘Pack finished last year in third place of the Explorers division but a playoff series victory over the University of Winnipeg showed what the team was truly capable of.

The team was dominant right from the start of the season, losing only twice in their first 16 games.

Their winning ways led to them receiving national recognition, as they spent seven weeks ranked in the CIS top ten.

Winning the division also guaranteed TRU a bye through the first round of the playoffs and homecourt advantage when they host the Regina Cougars in round two.

TRU boasts a three-headed monster on offence with Reese Pribilsky scoring 12 points per game as well as getting the ball in the hands of Josh Wolfram and Volodymyr Iegorov, who both rank in the top five in the conference in points per game.

TRU doesn’t just get it done on one side of the court though, they have also allowed the fewest points per game of any team in the whole of Canada West.

Both teams get the post-season underway March 3, with the women in Edmonton to play the University of Alberta while the men host the Regina Cougars.

Women’s volleyball bounced from playoffs WolfPack women fall in the first round of Canada West playoffs Cameron Doherty SPORTS EDITOR Ω The WolfPack women had their 2015-16 season come to an end this past week, when they dropped two games in a row to the Trinity Western University (TWU) Spartans.

After finishing the regular

season in sixth place in the Canada West conference of CIS volleyball, the ‘Pack was always going to be in a tough spot in the playoffs, having to play TWU in a best-of-three series on their home court in Langley. TWU finished the season in third place in Canada West and was ranked the first in the nation for three weeks earlier in the season.

The ‘Pack came into the match up with some momentum, however. They played their last regular season games against TWU and managed to win one of the two matches, knocking TWU out of the number one spot in the nation.

“Proving to ourselves that we could beat them was a big step for us. I think showing them that we’re not just going to go in there, roll over and take a beating is also important. Definitely a confidence booster. Any time you can beat the number one team in the country, you show yourselves that you can do that and there’s no reason you can’t do it again,” said TRU head coach Chad Grimm.

The ‘Pack came out and put that momentum to good use Thursday night, stunning the hometown fans at the Langley Events Centre by taking the first set by a score of 25–21. But the wheels began to fall off for the ‘Pack after that. The blocking game from TWU really picked up and the ‘Pack failed to counter it. TWU won the next three sets comfortably, taking the first match three sets to one.

Friday night followed almost the exact same pattern for TRU, they

came out strong in the first set and were able to settle their nerves by taking the first set 25–22. Just like the night before, TWU was able to regroup and win the next three sets to take the match and the series but the ‘Pack showed a lot more fight in this defeat. They kept all of the sets close and made TWU work for every point right up until the end.

Despite the loss, it is impossible to classify this season as anything other than a success for the team.

They made the playoffs for just the second time in school history and the days of going entire seasons without recording a win are well and truly behind the program.

“It’s nice to see some forward momentum with the team, for the girls that have been here for a while to taste some success.

It’s nice to see the culture of the team get to a place where we are a competitive team, we feel that we belong and that we can beat anybody in the country if we play our own match,” Grimm said.

The defeat also marked the end of the CIS volleyball careers of four of TRU’s players, Krista Hogewoning, Brianne Rauch, Alyssa Wolf and Katie Woo.

Hogewoning and Wolf are both players that began their volleyball careers at different schools before making the switch to TRU, beginning an influx of experienced talent that helped turn the program’s fortunes around.

Hogewoning was second on the team in kills this year and “a big piece of our success,” Grimm said.

Wolf played libero for the ‘Pack and along with leading the team in digs she was a captain, as well.

Rauch and Woo were both with TRU throughout some difficult times for the ‘Pack, and are part of a veteran core that was able to pull the team out of its slump and back into contention.

Rauch has been a “big leader for us, a big team player and she’s played a lot of different positions for us,” according to Grimm.

Woo was the team’s starting setter, and was able to put up some outstanding numbers in her final year with the program, recording 804 assists in the year.

“The growth that she’s shown this year has been tremendous. To be one of the top five girls in the conference in assists and help lead our team to the playoffs has been really important,” Grimm said.

Nomination packages will be available starting March 9 at 9:00AM. The all candidates forum will take place on March 25 at 4:00PM in the Students’ Union Building. The campaign period begins at 9:00AM on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 and runs until 4:00PM on Friday April 1st, 2016.
