It comes as Britain’s partyloving royal Prince Harry was given the role of welcoming the royals for their official UK visit next week.

It will be the first time Harry has been involved in an official state visit.

A MILLIONAIRE bather has been slammed for taking a helicopter for a swim at a well-known beauty spot.

The mystery man was filmed being picked up at S’illot des Toro, near Santa Ponsa, which is a specially protected nature reserve.

Campaign group Terraferida has denounced the incident to police, who are now investigating. “The area is strictly prohibited for landing,” said a spokesman. “Such activity endangers the biodiversity here” The off-limits beauty spot (left) is classified as a Place of Community Importance (LIC) and a Special Protection Zone for birds (ZEPA).

AN airline has launched a security investigation after the Olive Press revealed that an English tourist allegedly travelled to the UK from Spain on his friend’s passport.

British Airways is probing how British tourist Scott Morgan managed to fly back from Ibiza to Manchester on his pal Dominic Carroll’s passport.

Mancunian Morgan, 27, had accidentally picked up his pal’s passport after a big night out in San Antonio.

He’s a big guy and I’m not,” Carroll, 27, told the Olive Press this week.

“It’s really bad with all the security problems we are having in

the UK at the moment,” added the chef, who was staying on for an extra day on the island.

However, according to Carroll, he was merely ushered to a nearby desk, where he was quickly waved through.

“They simply let him through,” explained Carroll. “I just don’t understand it, especially the

way things are at the minute.

He could have been anyone.”

Luckily for Carroll, a friend who regularly flies to Ibiza for work was able to bring over his passport a few days later and he was able to get another flight home.

British Airways confirmed it had now launched a ‘very thorough investigation’ with ground staff in Ibiza over the alleged breach of security.

“British Airways takes safety and security very seriously and we have launched an immediate inquiry into this alleged incident of a customer travelling on the wrong passport,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Home Office’s Border Force told the Olive Press it was also investigating the incident.

At the time of going to press, Spain’s Policia Nacional, who are in charge of border control, had not responded.

Balcony throw Brit arrested AN Englishman has been arrested after allegedly trying to throw his partner from a fourth-floor balcony.

The 23-year-old was picked up at his Arenal hotel after fellow guests stepped into the fight between him and his girlfriend, also 23.

The man, who was allegedly drunk, then tried to attack the police.

The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance, with various injuries.

In a separate incident in Magaluf, two Englishmen were arrested after attacking a 43-year-old man, leaving him with severe injuries.

Boat thief rescued A BRITISH tourist who stole a boat was arrested after being rescued at sea by 25 Mallorca emergency rescue crew.

The man was detained after stealing a Zodiac dinghy near Port d’Andratx on Tuesday evening.

Rescue crews were scrambled after Cala Llamp residents heard the man crying for help at sea.

He was finally found 30 metres from shore under a cliff.

The man had been in Mallorca for two days.

AN expat has launched a personal crusade against pickpockets.

It comes after her husband had his wallet snatched as he came out of a bank in Can Pastilla.

Brit Bev Dodds, 56, was furious after hubby Paul fell for a trick bumping into a little boy just outside.

Mallorca ‘massacre’ averted A RADICAL cleric facing extradition to Spain from the UK, has been filmed claiming Mallorca will become an Islamic caliphate.

ISIS-follower Tarik Chadlioui, 43, has been arrested in Birmingham in connection to a planned London Bridgestyle stabbing spree on the island.

It comes as police arrested three other alleged jihadists in dawn raids on the island, over the planned outrage for

the town of Inca.

The suspected leader of the group, imam Chadlioui, 43, has frequently taken to Facebook to say ‘an islamic state will return to Mallorca’.

He has been seen ranting his Isis propaganda in both Palma and even in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains.

According to police he travelled to Mallorca and began to radicalize the group which has now been rounded up.

OPINION Wrong tourists?

EVERYONE who lives in Mallorca loves the island. So the constant bad publicity it attracts, via a couple of infamous resorts, is galling for those of us who call this paradise our home.

However, there is no getting away from it.

As the mercury rises, so too does the tally of all-toofamiliar stories involving drunken tourist excess and violence.

It’s become an inescapable facet of life here.

But this week’s showdown meeting between police and local politicians shows the authorities here are determined to meet this problem head on.

Limiting the amount of booze available on all-inclusive holidays won’t bend the iron will of northern European holidaymakers to drink themselves stupid.

But it is a start.

Deal with it IT seems quite staggering that, in this day and age, a passenger can inadvertently skip through numerous security checks in two different countries on the wrong passport.

And yet this is what happened to a traveller on British Airways of all airlines.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing and must be thorough.

Given the dozens of murders by terrorists in London and Manchester in recent weeks, it raises some alarming questions.

Dip stick THE reckless bather who hired a helicopter to fly him to a protected beauty spot for a dip showed a jawdropping sense of entitlement.

One can only assume that the mystery swimmer is a wealthy tourist as it is hard to imagine a local would disrespect the area in such an obscene way.

He may not be kicking seven bells of hell out of a stranger in a drunken rampage, but in his own way, this man has inflicted his own form of upmarket vandalism on the island.

But, perhaps worse, the helicopter company that took him there, should have known better.

It is time to name and shame them both.

T’S 11pm, and Magaluf is grinding into action.

On the Strip, scantily clad girls at the City Lights bar gyrate on raised platforms while Irish and British youngsters sink cheap shots and cocktails.

Over the years, this Mallorca resort has become a byword for bad behaviour. Its heady brew of sex, drink and violence is manna from heaven for tabloid-headline writers, with a daily onslaught of stories proclaiming the worst excesses of north European youth.

In truth, most of the youngsters here are well-behaved kids, many enjoying their first overseas holiday away without the family and exercising their right to cut-price booze. Two Sex On The Beach cocktails here cost as little as €4.50, two pints just €3.

But despite the best intentions of Mallorquins and the local business community, Magaluf is finding it hard to shed its bad-boyand-girl reputation.

“A few lads we know have got a hiding over here,” said Sean, 19, from County Wateford, who is here for a week with a group of seven friends.

“One lad went out on his own the other night and 15 English lads attacked him. He got battered with a baseball bat and had to have 12 stitches. He went to the hospital, but was back out again the next night.”

Just last week, two British youngsters were filmed brutally battering a compatriot at an apartment block in Punta Ballena, setting about him in a sustained, sickening assault that was captured on CCTV. One of the culprits can be seen stabbing the victim with a broken bottle before the duo pummel him to a pulp.

The following day, a 19-year-old Brit was left fighting for his life after falling from a third-floor flat, sustaining a broken leg and life-threatening injuries. On Wednesday, an 18-year-old British girl reported an alleged sexual assault to Spanish police as Magaluf’s grim roll call lengthened yet further.

The annual ritual of debauchery has spurred locals into action. In June, as reported in our last issue, an updated list of 64 regulations outlawing bad behaviour were issued by Calvia council, the local authorities charged with upholding law and order.

The list of misdemeanours are split into three categories. ‘Minor’ offences, such as climbing a tree or shining a laser, are charged at between €100 and €599. ‘Serious crimes’, like defecating in the street, will see miscreants charged from €600 to €1,499. Bar owners serving under-age drinkers can be slapped with a penalty of between €1,500 to €3,000.

According to figures supplied by Calvia Town Hall, the first 15 days of June saw 25 complaints filed with the police for outdoor nudity, with one group of 18 drunken tourists fined last month after jumping in the sea totally starkers.

But despite this new clampdown, many are yet to discern a meaningful change.

iour,” said a spokesperson for the head of local business body ACOTUR. “There are important people here that are working hard to change the image of the area.

“Thirty or so years ago, this kind of thing didn’t happen. Tour operators like Thomas Cook had guides who showed people what to do, where to go and what not to do. That doesn’t happen now.

“People here didn’t expect it to be as bad this year as last year. We have to change attitudes, and tell people. ‘You can’t come here and do whatever you want.’”

This week, Mallorca council and government officials sat down with local business and hoteliers to discuss the dilemma of badlybehaved young holidaymakers tarnishing the island’s reputation.

Despite the local outrage, Magaluf’s illicit thrills continue to draw boys and girls looking for a good time, with many young Irish choosing to base themselves in nearby Santa Ponca before heading into Magaluf for a night - or day - out.

But weary Magaluf bar and restaurant owners, many of them long established, have grown tired of the ‘unfair’ amount of negative stories emanating from their area.

“If you want to look for bad press, you can find it anywhere,” said Jason Brown, who runs thriving beach-side café Tom Brown’s, a popular local establishment since 1982.

“I got attacked in London with a knife. They are trying to change the rules here, but things can’t change overnight.”

While the Brits may attract the lion’s share of the bad headlines, Irish youngsters have found themselves on the wrong side of the local press, too. Last week, local online media outlet Cronica Balear posted a video purportedly showing dozens of Irish youngsters dancing in the street at 6.30 am. Which could be dismissed as mere high jinks were it not for the fact many of them were pogoing on top of a car, destroying it in the process.

We have all been young and made foolish decisions through drink. And it does bear repeating that it is a small minority of fools spoiling it for the rest. King’s blast over Catalunya KING Felipe VI has blasted Catalunya’s planned independence referendum.

While addressing parliament on the 40th anniversary of Spain’s first elections, the Spanish monarch said the vote will only ‘negate freedom’.

Felipe said: “No path taken in our democracy should lead to the breakdown of our coexistence… or to a path that divides Spaniards and breaks the fraternal spirit which unites us all.

“Disagreements and differences can be resolved through dialogue and debate.”

He added that the vote, scheduled for October 1, would only bring insecurity and lead to the ‘negation of freedom’.

The speech comes after Catalonia’s leader Carles Puigdemont claimed Guardia Civil officers were interrogating his party members over the scheduled referendum.

TWO teenagers have been kidnapped and tortured over a €1.7m robbery in Gibraltar.

The two lads, 18 and 16, were snatched from the street in the space of days following the armed heist in an industrial estate.

It comes after police arrested a third youth, a 29-yearold father-of-one, who has now been released on bail.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, claims to have been wrongly arrested and has since received grave threats to his family, leading to the kidnap of his friends in connection to the robbery at New Harbours estate.

“One of the kids turned up at my house on Sunday with a broken hand and foot and p***ing blood,” he told the Olive Press this week.

He himself had been arrested at 1am by armed police, the day after the robbery.

“At first I didn’t realise who it was so I called the police and I told them there were men outside my house with rifles.

“I was s**t scared. Apparently I have taken £1.5 million.”

Although he admitted he has been in trouble in the past for minor offences, the suspect, who remains on bail, insisted he has changed his ways and has not been in trouble with the police for the past six years.

A ‘substantial’ sum of money has been recovered and another man, Rachid Behdraoui, a 51-year-old Moroccan national, was charged on Monday accused of the robbery and possession of a firearm.

They did not confirm if they were looking for anyone else, at this stage.

Behdraoui’s application for bail was turned down, citing the seriousness of the offences and the fact he has no local ties and poses a flightrisk.

He will appear at the Supreme Court on July 28.

A BRAVE Gibraltarian firefighter was among the first to enter the fire-ravaged Grenfell Tower in London.

Russell Gonzalez, 31, was part of a search and rescue team which saved the life of a woman on the 21st floor of the 24-story block.

The third-generation firefighter, based in Paddington, was able to use special breathing apparatus which allows firefighters to stay in burning buildings for longer.

This is a coastline of castles and carpaccios, coves and corvina (one of its best local fish)... the perfect blend of nature and its best ingredients.

This is a coastline of gems; historic Tarifa, the bridgehead for the Moors in Spain and a crossing point for centuries and beautiful Vejer de la Frontera, with its cobbled streets and restaurant scene.

This is a coastline of laid back, low rise resorts; Roman Bolonia and the biggest sand dune in the world, entertaining El Palmar, with its party crowd and surf, and quirky Canos de Meca, with its alternative feel.

But what best sums up this long stretch of coastline for me are the views you get while taking lunch at places like Tesoro above Tarifa or, sitting, for example, on the terrace of your hotel suite at Califa in Vejer.

For spreading out in front of you are uninterrupted tenmile vistas of rolling fields all the way down to white sandy beaches, with very little built on them.

An incredible sight, this patchwork quilt of greenery and long, unspoilt beaches is sadly practically unique to Spain these days, but what much of Andalucia's coastline would have looked like 50 years ago.

great places to eat within a ten mile radius of the town.

Tarifa has an altogether different feel. This is a party town, particularly in summer, when the back streets are heaving with lively bars well into the early hours.

But its stylish mix of shops and restaurants added to its melting pot of worldly Spaniards and interesting expats make for a distinct Tarifa scene, not dissimilar to the one you find in Ibiza and it is one of the few places – thanks in the main to its breezes – that still has enough going on through the winter.

The Moors would never have had it so good on arriving in Tarifa in 710AD. While later dubbing Andalucia ‘paradise’, it was certainly anything but peaceful when they used the town as their bridgehead into southern Spain.

This is quickly obvious wondering around Tarifa, its historic ramparts littered with statues and references to stirring catholic heroes such as Sancho El Bravo and Guzmán el Bueno.

If you have never taken a ride to these shores, the other side of the Rock of Gibraltar and around Cadiz you are in for a surprise.

This is Europe's true deep south, and aside from the austere 'cubist' towns, which were built by the Moors who ruled this land for nearly 800 years, you will be spoilt by the numerous sites from the famous Trafalgar lighthouse – off which the key naval battle once took place - to the historic fishing village of Sancti Petri, near Chiclana.

PRIVILEGE: The El Jardin restaurant comes with peacocks

It combines four hotels, three restaurants and a beach club. Jon Clarke meets the team behind the Tarifa-based Hurricane group

S

ITTING on the shady verandah looking across rows of palms and up to a peak covered in umbrella pines, feels like something reminiscent of the days of the Raj. Peacocks scream in the distance while in front of me are a dozen beautifully laid tables, each with candles and starched white tablecloths.

This is El Jardin, the newest, most exciting garden restaurant on the Costa de la Luz. With talented chef Alfonso Burgos at the reign and some of the most demanding hoteliers on the coast behind him, it was always going to succeed.

Set in the stunning, almost tropical grounds of Tarifa’s Punta Sur hotel, diners are well sheltered from the famous winds of the nearby coast.

A long time in coming, the new menu while largely Mediterranean in flavour, also reflects

the various places that chef Alfonso has worked, including Indonesia and the Galapagos islands.

In his new post he not only has a command of the very best ingredients the Costa de la Luz has to offer, but he also has an amazing new kitchen.

I would particularly recommend the Thai salad as a light lunch treat, coming with Vermicelli noodles, prawns, mango, peanuts and zucchini strips, in a chili sauce, while the locally grown tomatoes ‘alinados’ were crisp and fresh and served with pearls of Mozzarella.

For dinner you might plump for the wonderful steamed clams with Iberian ham, while the bluefin tuna tartare was splendid. A fabulous fillet steak from the local Retinto cattle was perfect as were the baby back pork ribs in barbecue sauce.

This is all part of a masterplan struck between the Hurricane group’s owners the Whaley brothers and two Whaley youngsters, George, 23, and Sophie, 24, who are, in their words, ‘working on the aesthetic’ of the hotel, redesigning the bedrooms and, best of all, revolutionising the menu.

It certainly seems to be working with the amazing hotel more comfortable and stylish than ever before, not to mention its pool, by far the best on the coast.

The story behind the Hurricane group began over three decades ago when British adventurer Peter Whaley made an unscheduled stop off en route from his home in Ibiza to a holiday in Morocco.

A keen windsurfer he unwittingly found himself on the windiest beach in Europe and had the vision to launch a business there.

It was 1984 and he had soon found a partner (an Australian board maker Barry Pussell) to help him open the coast’s first rental business.

Named 100% Fun (now a successful nearby hotel) – the shack rented out windsurfs and sold clothes from his wife Terese’s successful fashion label Graffiti Ibiza.

“It was a low key launch and we had no idea how well it was going to go,” explains Peter today.

It was the spark to launch the wind revolution on the Costa de la Luz, an industry that now brings in tens of millions of euros every year.

But, Peter quickly realised that in order to keep the growing number of surfers happy they needed to offer accommodation, so the following year he and his brother Michael, a builder, bought an old ruined 12-room hostal just up the road.

A third brother James, a film director and producer from London - who also speaks an incredible seven languages also got involved.

A big figure in the film business – as well as the manager of Adam and the Ants it was little surprise that the Hurricane Hotel was soon to become one of Andalucia’s hippest places to stay.

“I convinced my brothers that we would never make enough money from 12 rooms, so we

obtained permission from the town hall to build an extra 23 and brought in an architect,” explains James, who is very much still the life and soul of the Hurricane – and its nearby sister hotel Punta Sur. He continues: “Once opened we converted the bricklayers into our staff, some becoming cooks, others waiters, others receptionists or gardeners.

As the local restaurants back then were basic, at best, the brothers installed a herb garden and started to plant and grow their own vegetables.

As James had lived in Italy he got a friend to send rucula, or rocket seeds, and the coast’s best restaurant was also born.

“It just grew and grew organically,” explains Peter, who still spends half the year in Ibiza, where he has a farmhouse.

“But now we think we have just the right ingredients to continue to be successful for years to come.”

Nowadays the group comprises four hotels - The Hurricane, Punta Sur, Valdevaqueros (100% Fun was sold six years ago) and a new hotel recently opened in Jericoacoara, Brazil, appropriately also a kitesurfing hotspot. “It is coming along really well,” explains James. “We are just about to open the second phase and it has become a very popular place to stay.” Visit www.hotelhurricane.com

THE walkway down onto the white sandy beach below offers a runway to paradise.

Down here the view goes on for miles, as far in fact to Africa and the nearby rocky peaks of Punta Paloma to the west.

And if the beach is windy, well no worries, take a few paces back and unwind at Valdevaqueros, the hippest hangout on the Costa de la Luz. Take apew, most likely a bean bag, and watch the beautiful people glide about to the ambient sounds of reggae or house, depending on the time of day.

From here you will most likely see a profusion of colourful kites, as they bob up and down, and can chill out all day enjoying the classic Tarifa vibe.

Kick back and graze on the fabulous food and superb smoothies, maybe head for a massage or if you are feeling energetic have a chat with the guys from the ion watersports centre next door.

“While it used to be just for sporty types, the majority of people come here now be-

cause it is super-hip,” explains Chris Ziaja, the boss of ion, formerly the Mistral centre.

“It’s Mojitos from 3pm but it creates a great atmosphere and it is surprising how many people end up renting out paddle surfs or taking a kitesurf lesson.”

It is certainly the spot to take up this fun, high-adrenaline sport, with current world champion Liam Whaley learning and basing himself here when not touring the world competing.

But equally, it is a great place to just take the waters, have lunch or an afternoon drink at the achingly hip Tumbao beach bar.

Here, boss David Alvarez Trevino, a butcher by trade, works hard to run a happy ship, by bringing in a mix of good DJs and flamenco groups, and serving up the best burgers from his burger truck, which he takes to events around the country.

The main restaurant is also good, while the iZumo smoothy bar has some great drinks such as ‘magic maca’, which is delicious.

Opened by Daniela Di Placido, she has been serving up juices around the world for nearly a decade.

“They are mostly dairy free and I have a big range of minerals and vitamins I add to the drinks, which are great on the stomach.”

Next door is the funky clothes shop Graffiti, the very epitome of cool, with some great new lines added every season.

HE pungent scent of tuna is wafting down the street from the salting factory, while toga-clad townsfolk make their way to the forum to shop and socialise.

It’s mid morning, and maybe later - in the heat of the day - they will duck for cover and chill out at the town’s spa, punish a few slaves and then treat the wife to a show at the theatre.

Picture the scene at Baelo Claudia 1,800 years ago, at that time one of Spain’s most important Roman settlements.

Today, at this reconstructed living museum, you can walk the cobbled streets, explore old Roman villas or declaim a few stanzas by Seneca from the stage of the ancient amphitheatre.

Shut your eyes and you can almost believe you’ve been beamed back a couple of centuries.

From here a well-signposted route leads you around the Roman settlement, with plenty of information in English to accompany the strikingly well-preserved ruins.

The town had really started growing in 2AD, after a product, known as garum, made in Baelo, took off among the chattering classes of Rome.

Made out of fish guts it was a pungent, but allegedly tasty addition to any meal and the whole area became dedicated to its production, with Roman ships arriving and departing on a daily basis for Italy, loaded up with the magic product.

Nowadays its big sister Tarifa makes its money from a different sort of natural produce: the wind!

‘Breathtaking’’ and ‘windy’ are certainly two adjectives often used to describe trendy Tarifa - the wind and kitesurf capital of Europe.

SUN-SEEKERS and surfers aren’t the only ones who head to the Costa de la Luz every year.

Sharing the shores are pods of whales which can regularly be seen frolicking in the Straits of Gibraltar.

A number of local companies – such as the best established Turmares Tarifa - take guests on boat trips to see these mammals, with a slant on marine conservation.

The orcas are attracted to the sparkling Mediterranean by the large amount of tasty blue fin tuna, which occasionally brings them into conflict with local fisherman.

“Luckily for us, orcas come here each year to feed,” Andre at Turmares explains.

“On the other hand, that’s not so good for the presence of the Bluefin tuna.”

Andre adds that despite the ‘killer’ name attributed to the most famous whale they are actually ‘harmless to humans’ al-

though they do feed on 32 different mammal species.

Along with the killers, pilot, sperm and fin whales migrate from the Atlantic, as well as three different types of dolphins – common, striped and bottlenose.

But the focal point is Calle Alameda, a lively Spanish walkway lined with good restaurants, including the newly-refurbished Petit Bistro for classy French cuisine. There’s frequently live music here, and an extensive book market to peruse.

Across the road the refurbished grand fort, overlooking the bustling harbour, has recently reopened to the public, providing wonderful views of the Strait.

This little fishing town was the first point of the Moorish invasion of southern Spain in AD711, when the Berber chief landed from Ceuta with 400 foot soldiers and 100 horsemen.

They built the fort later, in 960AD. It is a lovely ride from here to Bolonia, through stunning undeveloped countryside and pine fronded beaches, with kites bobbing up above on windy days. There is a great selection of fantastic hotels here, the oldest and most established being the Hurricane.

Enriching the sole!

DREAMY: A prawn dish with wine AM sucking the brains from half a dozen crimson red ‘carabinero’ king prawns, while sipping on a splendid Rosso di Montalcino.

In front of me 100 kites bob up and down, almost in time to the strains of cool Brazilian music, while all around hipsters and hotties chow down and sip on cocktails.

Backed by umbrella pines and overlooking miles of stunning sand dunes - not to mention a backdrop to one half of the legendary Pillars of Hercules in Morocco - could anywhere beat Osteria del Sole for lunch?

With a splendid list of fresh pasta made every morning, an amazing selection of fish dishes and an Italian wine list to put three quarters of Tuscany’s eateries in the shade, I was in foodie heaven.

I would happily have eaten lunch and dinner here, after a tour of the kitchens, where a team of female chefs were beavering away in preparation for lunch service.

Everything is made from fresh and the team of trendy waiters, all bearded up in jet black uniforms, were enthusiastic as me.

I had been tipped off from my pal James Whaley, owner of the nearby Hurricane hotel, that this was the best new spot to eat and he rarely gets it wrong.

Nor did manager Stefano, from Bologna (the Italian one, not the nearby village of Bolonia), who is extremely knowledgeable on the local food scene, and more or less chose my lunch.

He guided me first to the wonderful ‘ahumados de Barbate’ starter, which at first didn’t appeal, but on arrival sent shivers of joy up my spine.

Beautifully served with crusty bread and three delicious home-made butters of lemon, black garlic and onion, this blackboard-and-slate combo included smoked tuna, cod and sardines.

WHEN the owners of three trendy bars in Barcelona decided to expand, it was obvious that Tarifa was right at the top of the list.

With a similar vibe to back home and an equally demanding crowd of bon viveurs and style-meisters, it had just the right feel.

Add to that a love of kitesurfing and it was obvious that Francesco, Seba, Max and Sergio had the perfect spot.

Now in its third year, Papagayo has gone from strength to strength and be-

Again I was led to the Tagliatella del Corsaro which came with Italian speck, cream and a tabasco sauce, all flambeed with vodka. And again plaudits to Stefano, who got it spot on.

There was a decent mix of fresh fish and meat dishes, but I was mostly

In total, there were over 100 wines from Italy alone, including a number from the legendary Antinori stable, coming in at a small fortune, but equally there are some good value chestnuts among the list, as well as a fair few Spanish bottles.

I had a splendid Rosso di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne and a Pazo Senorans Albarino, from Galicia, for under 20 euros. Recently set up by the capable Italian/Chilean partners behind Papagayo in central Tarifa, it’s a stylish spot, all wood and clean lines, with plenty of glass to keep the invasive wind out.

With the right music, wine and food, it is bound to succeed.

In fact, it’s a no brainer really.

The American bosses behind Real Capital Solutions have snapped up sizeable plots in Estepona, Mijas and Benahavis and continue to look at further opportunities along the coast.

The company, based in Marbella since 2013, already has five other developments, including The Retreat, in Elviria.

“We have spent around €86 million here so far and have a fund of €100 million to spend,” explained Managing Partner Peter Wells, based in Colorado.

“We are one of the largest developers on the Costa del Sol and our emphasis is on distressed properties.”

He added: “Also we do things transparently and always try and deliver on price and quality.”

The company - which made hundreds of millions buying and selling distressed properties in the US - has 16 staff working out of its office at Centro Plaza.

Local boss Taylor Cox, added: “The coast is really starting to come alive and it’s a pleasure to live in such a beautiful part of the world.”

ESTATE agents in Spain and Gibraltar are lining themselves up for the busiest July on record.

It comes as some British buyers put purchases on hold due to the forthcoming EU referendum on June 23.

Most agents the Olive Press spoke to confirmed they had various sales currently ‘paused’ awaiting the result, despite the British market remaining strong.

The majority believe that the expected result - to stay in Europe - will lead to the pound strengthening with a red hot summer of sales to follow.

Ben Bateman, at Holmes Sotogrande, described the referendum lead up as a ‘pause for thought for British buyers’ due to concerns over the weak pound.

“After a remain vote however, we expect to see a strong finish to the year - and a sudden wave of bids from British buyers,” he told the Olive Press.

One agent in Gibraltar has gone one step further actually employing extra staff for July. Savills director Sammy Cruz-Armstrong said: “Everything is on hold due to Brexit, but I am convinced we will stay in Europe and am taking on extra staff in July to deal with the expected deluge of business.”

Either way, official statistics out this month confirm the British market remains strong and tens of thousands continue to look for their dream home.

Respected analyst Mark Stucklin insists that foreign demand for Spanish property was up 16% in the first quarter with Brits the biggest group of foreign buyers at 22% of the market share.

“The British still dominate the foreign market for property and there is no evidence of a noticeable decline in demand as yet,” he said.

“In fact it is the opposite. Prices are extremely cheap right now and we are selling two times as many properties as we were last year,” he said.

He added: “My salesman Paul - already a bit of a local celebrity - has just completed his seventh consecutive sale and people are buying because they can see that the incredible deals won’t wait around for them forever,” he added.

SAVING SOCIAL HOUSING PALMA Town Hall will demand that 30% of properties in San Ferragut are used as social housing.

The site on the outskirts of the city, which has room for 400 apartments according to current plans, has remained dormant for years after developers Ibercrom went bankrupt.

But the town hall is hoping smaller-sized

flats could see up to 700 apartments built, meaning more than 200 could be used as social housing.

It is also hoped that the area could be turned into a new business centre for Palma.

If successful, the plan would see the bottom floors of the blocks turned into office space, with IT companies and others able to use them.

Taxman cometh A LEADING Balearic property expert has revealed what to look out for if you own a Spanish home through a company.

Jason Porter from Blevins Franks points out that residents owning property through a company must pay market rent to the company for its use as well as Spanish corporation tax.

Profits paid to the shareholder are subject to Spanish income tax at savings income rates and residence relief from capitals gains tax wouldn’t exist.

“The shares in the company are effectively included for wealth tax, without the benefit of the €300,000 main home allowance,” said Porter.

“Beneficiaries are not entitled to the main home reduction for succession tax. Shares in foreign companies need to be included on Modelo 72.”

He added: “There are additional considerations if the company is resident in a tax haven. For example, there is an annual 3% tax based on the property’s value.”

He also advised having a diverse investment portfolio combining property and shares.

NDALUCIA is leading the way in the Spanish mortgage stakes.

It comes after the number of home mortgages granted to prospective buyers in Spain dropped by 11.4% in April when compared with the same month in 2016, according to Spain's Statistical Office (INE).

A total of 21,163 home mortgages were granted in the fourth month of this year.

Andalucia registered the most with a total of 4,467, followed by Madrid and Catalonia with 3,732 and 3,345 respectively.

he ruling of this topic goes to show how an otherwise strong case can go horribly wrong for a client and subsequently his lawyer.

After a Madrid Appeal Court ruling, the said lawyer has been ordered to indemnify his client with €524,000 for not submitting an original document, but a photocopy of it, in a court of law.

The case dealt with a dispute over property rights, and the title deeds were deemed ‘essential and fundamental evidence to prove the facts upon which the claimants petition relied.’ The claimant's lawyer’s oversight was submitting a photocopy of said document on filing and the original at the latter stages of the proceedings, resulting in the defendant's lawyers challenging the validity of the copy and questioning the tardy submission of the main evidence -original title deeds.

I s**t in the milk! The varied and contradictory uses of ‘leche’ in Spanish, writes Elsa Maishman

Milking it

F

rom giving a milk to having bad milk to going at full milk, leche is one of the most useful words in Spanish. Despite the fact that Spaniards have a much lower consumption-per-capita than the UK,

they are, idiomatically at least, obsessed with milk. The Spanish Royal Academy, the organisation charged with safeguarding the Spanish language, lists more than 40 idioms using it - none of which have anything to

do with the white stuff. Read on to learn some of the most useful leche expressions – but be careful! Some phrases have several contradictory meanings, depending on the context…

Tener mala leche (to have bad milk)

Hay mala leche (there is bad milk)

This means to be in a bad mood, or to be bad tempered.

The expression harks from the days when people believed that babies inherited personality traits through breast milk, which is why wet nurses were carefully selected in order not to pass bad milk on to babies.

In this sense, mala leche means bad blood or ill feeling. So ‘hay mucha mala leche entre él y su hermano’ means ‘there is a lot of bad feeling between him and his brother’.

A mala leche/con mala leche (with bad milk) An action undertaken ‘with bad milk’ means that it was done with bad intentions from the beginning.

Subtly different to the above, the two meanings can easily be confused when referring to a person: context will dictate whether they had a bad temper or bad intentions.

Mala leche (bad milk) On its own, mala leche can mean bad luck. So ‘¡Qué mala leche tiene!’ Can mean ‘What bad luck he has’. As the Spanish way to call someone lucky uses the verb tener, this can be easily confused with the first point by foreigners. Not by Spaniards however, who always seem to know which meaning is intended at any given time.

Ser la leche (to be the milk) Confusingly, this phrase can mean either to be really good or really bad. So if a new phone is ‘la leche’, it is very good, but the same phrase could be used to condemn an old phone that keeps breaking. When applied to a person (‘¡eres la leche!)’, it can mean almost anything. For example, ‘he thinks he is the milk’ (‘se cree la leche’) can be translated as ‘he thinks he is all that’.

A toda leche (at full milk) This essentially means ‘at a maximum level’. So ‘ir a toda leche’ means ‘to go really fast’, ‘trabajar a toda leche’ means ‘to work flat out’ and ‘hacer los deberes a toda leche’ means ‘to do your homework at top speed’.

La leche de (the milk of) This means a lot of something. So ‘saber la leche’ about a given subject means to know a lot about it, while to be ‘la leche de listo’ means to be very clever, and ‘hace una leche de calor’ means that it’s extremely hot. This can also mean a lot of nothing, so ‘no sabe ni la leche’ translates as ‘he doesn’t know anything’.

De la leche (of the milk) Similar to the above, this phrase is used as an intensifier. So ‘un dolor de la leche’ means a really strong pain and ‘una suerte de la leche’ means really good fortune.

¿Qué leches?

(What milks?)

An expression of surprise, that could be translated as ‘what on earth?’ or the more vulgar ‘what the hell?’, depending on context. For example ‘¿Qué leches haces aquí?’ can be translated as ‘what on earth are you doing here?’ or ‘what the hell are you doing here?’

This structure also works with other questions such as ‘¿cuándo leches…?’ (‘when on earth?’) and ‘¿por

¡Leches! (Milks!)

This exclamation can mean anything from shock, wonder or surprise to annoyance, and listeners are expected to understand depending on the situation.

It can also be used in the singular, as Spaniards exclaim simply ‘¡leche!’ Milder than an expletive, in this context it can be translated as anything from ‘for heaven’s sake!’ to ‘goodness!’ to ‘well I never!’.

Toda esa leche (all that milk) This phrase has a vague meaning, which can be roughly translated as ‘all that stuff’, ‘all that jazz’, or ‘all that kind of thing’, as in ‘tengo que comprar pan, agua y toda esa leche’ (‘I have to buy bread, water and all that kind of thing’).

Dar una leche (to give a milk) To slap, hit, smack or punch someone. For example, ‘¡te voy a dar una leche!’ means ‘I am going to slap you!’

Darse una leche (to give oneself a milk) When reflexive, this expression means to hurt oneself accidentally by bumping or crashing into something. For example, ‘Andrea resbaló por la calle y se dio una leche’ means that Andrea slipped and fell on the street, but ‘Andrea se dio una leche con el coche’ means she had a crash in her car.

Cagarse en la leche (to shit in the milk) Spaniards idiomatically defecate on everything: from God to your mother to the salty sea, so it seems only fitting that milk should be included in this list. The expression is used to express anger and frustration, and it again harks back to breastfeeding (the original phrase meant ‘to shit in the milk that you were fed’).

Until I’d lived through the changes myself, it didn’t matter how many times I was warned of how busy it would get, I just couldn’t picture it.

Things had pretty much closed down when we first got here in the Autumn.

It was lovely and warm still, there were no parking charges and we had the beaches to ourselves and any restaurant still open was really quiet so there was no need to book.

Anyone we met usually lived here, at least for a big chunk of the year, and the social scene was very good.

Yet in the space of a month the place has transformed.

Everything is open, restaurants are full, there’s no parking to be had, beaches are covered with uncovered bodies in varying shades of pink and red and I’ve gone from knowing practically every face in the town to hardly recognising anyone.

Everyone I do know is working their socks off whilst the going’s good.

Throw in the fact that it’s too flippin’ hot, even during the evening.

El Pando, my car, has had its air conditioning fixed thank the Lord, so at least driving is bearable after the first few minutes. The nice hombre in the garage did it for nothing and very quickly, thankfully. I think he was a bit scared of me to be honest, as a deranged English woman of a certain age looking very close to inward combustion, I needed to be despatched as soon as possible. It’s fixed, I’m saved!

The other thing about living in such a desirable place with relatively cheap and frequent summer flights is that we’ve had back to back visitors. All have now departed and I honestly believed that I’d be up on the roof terrace yelling ‘FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST!’ in my best Martin Luther King Jr. accent.

Yet strangely I appear to be suffering from empty nest syndrome. Surely all that extra cleaning, laundry and shopping is a small price to pay for being dragged forcibly down to the beach or into some of these exciting newly opened restaurants.

I think we owe it to our future visitors to try another place tonight, purely in the interests of research.

Charter starter THE head of Spain’s National Association of Nautical Businesses (ANEN) has welcomed new regulations governing the Balearics’ charter-boats industry.

Passed in May, they allow any EU-registered vessel up to a maximum of a 12 berth to be used as a charter boat in the Balearic Islands.

The Balearic Islands account for 55% of all Spain’s charterboat business.

“Out of Spain’s autonomous communities, only the Balearic Islands and Valencia have regulated charter-boat activity,” said Carlos Sanlorenzo, secretary general of ANEN. “Free exchange of services and freedom of movement are basic principles of the EU, so you can’t limit this activity to only Spanish boats.”

He added: “At the same time, our boats can go to places like Greece or Croatia.”

Local business owners have complained the new regulations require boats to identify their main port of operation, meaning many dock far from land and transport clients on a launch.

All at sea BALEARIC sea rescue agency Salvamento Maritimo attended 597 incidents at sea last year.

Of the emergency calls received, 89% were from recreational boats, five per cent from fishermen and six from merchant vessels.

Altogether, the rescue team has seven boats which respond to distress signals sent by people in trouble at sea.

“You don’t need to be scared at sea, but you do need to have respect,” said Miguel Felix Chicon head of the Balearic Salvamento Maritimo.

“Sometimes during, for example, a Barca Madrid match, people let off distress flares.

That is a signal for help and we have to attend that rescue.

A RUSSIAN billionaire’s €410 million super yacht has been cruising round the Balearic Islands.

The 142-metre Sailing Yacht A, owned by oligarch Andrey Melnichenko, has been seen at celebrity hotspots Ibiza and Formentera.

Holidaymakers snapped the vessel as it drifted past the trendy beaches of Figueretes and Playa d’en Bossa.

The vessel boasts three 300ft masts larger than Big Ben, a swimming pool, and an underwater observation pod.

It is longer than 12 London buses and hold eight decks in total.

Fan-sea THE Ritz-Carlton hotel company has chosen Spain to test the waters for its new brand of luxury cruise liners. Christened The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, the first of a trio of ships will be constructed at the Astillero Hijos de J.Barreras shipyard in Vigo for launch in 2019.

The new 623-foot-long vessels have been dubbed anticruise ships as they will be able to call at ports that larger ships can’t.

The first vessel will carry 298 passengers and be capable of seven to 10 day voyages. As well as 149 suites, each with a private balcony, and two penthouses, there will also be a restaurant, bar, pool, spa and marina to launch water toys.

The first ship, depending on the season, is expected to cruise the Mediterranean, northern Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.

Reservations are expected to open in May 2018.

A FLOTILLA of 30 new boats are set to get to work cleaning up the Balearics’ coastline.

In total, 26 beach boats and four specialized vessels for spills and emergencies - one for each island - are tasked with removing an estimated 75 tonnes of waste from the water.

Some 40 team members hosted activities and events alongside dozens of food vendors.

“Mallorca needed a Vegan Day Out!” Adams told the Olive Press. “There is a wealth of excellent vegan shops, workshops, restaurants and people already here, I just connected all the dots and the turnout has been fantastic.”

As well as fine gastronomy, there were live food workshops and tutorials.

Adams is already planning a second Vegan Day Out event to end the summer season, the last weekend in August.
