“She is desperate and distraught and is worried the only other option she has is to return to Ireland, a country she left in 2004,” explained expat Martin.

The demand came when hotel bosses allegedly decided to turn her room into a family room over the busy summer season to make more money.

They have allegedly told her she can return in winter when demand decreases.

“She has paid the price of a decent sized flat to live in this room all these years and this is how they treat her,” continued Martin.

“She is really upset that all of the money she has put in for more than a decade doesn’t count for anything.”

When McDonald moved to the Costa del Sol, her brother, now deceased, set up a trust fund for her and set her up in the hotel.

Another British victim of the site, pensioner Anne Landon, said she became suspicious after booking a break through the site and transferring £4,600 into one of their UK bank accounts.

“I take my grandchildren on holiday every summer and was getting pretty desperate trying to find somewhere,” said Anne, 74.

“The price was very reasonable and I was so excited. But immediately after booking he sent another email to say he had given me the wrong bank account number and could I send the money again.

“I immediately felt very uncomfortable. I phoned my brother and said. ‘I think this is a scam.’”

TWO Brits who fled to Mallorca after being charged with prostituting their own daughters have been arrested in Cartama, near Malaga.

Aged 54 and 59, the married couple had offered sexual relations with their daughter to a man back in 2009. They were convicted of sexual abuse of a minor in 2016, but then fled to Mallorca in a desperate attempt to avoid police. From Mallorca, they moved to a shack on a farm in Cartama (left), where they have now been found and arrested. The pair will now face prison.

EXCLUSIVE: A dozen expats busted over sophisticated timeshare fraud operation

CLAMP DOWN discovered a big tax bill had gone unpaid.

Among those questioned was a leading Benalmadena lawyer, said to be linked to the gang, as well as local bar owners and various timeshare touts.

All 12 were arrested after a dawn raid which saw vehicles, computers and credit card machines seized by police and sniffer dogs.

“These guys got most of their business from the

various timeshare decks up the coast. They were merely involved in the contracts, invoicing and money collection side via credit card machines,” said the source.

Police confirmed the probe, but didn’t wish to comment.

Most of the gang have since been released on bail.

A GROUP of tourists have been robbed by a gang of Looky Looky men on the Costa del Sol. The students, celebrating the end of their A-levels, were beaten up before having their iPhones, watches and money stolen in Benalmadena.

James Kelly, 18, and three of his pals, were walking between bars at 2am when the gang struck.

They had only just arrived for their first Spanish holiday a few hours earlier.

“They attacked us from behind,” said Kelly, who is set to study at Liverpool University this September.

“We tried to fight back but they overpowered us, luckily there was a witness who saw the whole thing, and helped to scare them off and called police.”

“The whole thing has been pretty devastating,” added the student, from Kenilworth Sixth Form Academy, in Worcestershire.

THREE women have been killed by their partners in just one day.

It comes as figures showed a shocking 47% increase in domestic murders this year.

The incidents, which occurred in Madrid and Murcia, led to the arrest of two of men while the third in Murcia took his own life.

None of the victims had reported any mistreatment by their spouses previously.

Their deaths bring the number of domestic abuse-related murders in Spain this year to 27 - nine more than last year.

Andalucia had 6,913 victims of abuse last year, which represents one out of every 500 women, the highest number in Spain.

The four thieves stole thousands of euros worth of goods, including two iPhones, an Emporio Armani watch and 200 euros in cash. They also took a passport.

“Police told us they are part of a gang of Looky Looky men, who they are aware of and have now arrested,” added Kelly.

“They told us they sell goods along the beach by day.”

Kelly’s grandfather Michael, who let the group stay in his apartment, told the Olive Press: “I am shocked at the lack of police activity around such a well known nightlife area.

“It seems youngsters can’t have a night out in relative safety.

“What message does this send for the safety of any tourist coming to Malaga?”

Police declined to comment as we went to press.

BRITAIN’S most-wanted fugitive has evaded cops again, this time in Geneva.

Mark Acklom, who was thought to be hiding in Spain, was spotted at a cafe in the Swiss capital, but by the time the police arrived he had vanished.

Acklom, 45, was last tracked down to Murcia by the Olive Press, where we discovered his wife runs a property business.

He is wanted by UK police for allegedly defrauding fiancee Carolyn Woods of all her €960,000 (£850,000) life savings in Gloucestershire four years ago.

The National Crime Agency is now investigating the sighting.

Alleged victim Woods said: “I’m not really surprised that he’s sitting openly in public because he is supremely arrogant and probably feels invincible - not surprising bearing in mind he has slipped through the net so easily on numerous occasions before.”

A BRITISH family has been found guilty of scamming €51 million from UK taxpayers to fund their luxury lifestyle in Spain.

Geoffrey Copp, 56, his brother Andrew, 50, and his son Joshua, 24, enjoyed ‘high living on a grand scale’ thanks to their elaborate VAT scam.

Dad Geoffrey, who owns four mansions in the UK, also bought a huge villa on the Costa del Sol, where he spent much of the year.

They spent a total of €340,000 on private flights to Malaga in just six months and owned three Bentleys.

His brother Andrew meanwhile owned eight homes, six mortgage-free, including one in Malaga. His car collection, including Lamborghinis, was valued at €1.5 million.

Son Joshua spent thousands on Rolex and Piguet watches and splurged an incredible €150,000 in London’s Selfridges in one day.

Their business Central Payroll Specialists worked with recruitment companies and issued invoices to customers with 20% VAT applied.

Meanwhile, they declared sales amounting to just under €23 million, when it was actually more than €285 million. They also kept the VAT due.

The trio have been found guilty of conspiracy to cheat the public revenue and money laundering and will be sentenced at a later date.

Angry parents seize child sex offender A TEENAGER has been arrested after he was caught filming naked children playing on a Costa del Sol beach.

The 19-year-old was caught filming them on his phone on Cabopino beach before a father saw him and alerted the authorities.

In a subsequent raid of the young man’s home, police discovered a laptop contain-

ing thousands of files of child pornography, as well as photos and videos taken on local beaches.

The man, who lives in Marbella, had tried to delete the incriminating footage, but a father, whose young son was playing nude on the beach, took it off him and held it until police arrived.

A campaigning, community newspaper, the Olive Press represents the huge expatriate community in Spain with an estimated readership, including the websites, of more than 500,000 people a month.

Another one bites the dust For over a decade the Olive Press has been reporting on bent mayors like Juan Sanchez in Casares.

While most newspapers chose to ignore the corruption and bribery that went on during this time, we have continually pointed out and probed their misdoings.

Even the Spanish press largely turned a blind eye to the Junta’s huge ERE scandal at first, not to mention Tarifa’s barmy Valdevaqueros project, or the corruption that saw Ronda town hall almost get away with licensing a 2000-home golf development on UNESCO protected land.

Indeed, it was only after our story got picked up by the UK national press, that the Spanish newspapers duly followed up the case, leading to something to be done. As long ago as 2012, we even turned our whole front page over to the national Gurtel scandal enveloping Prime Minister Rajoy under the headline: ‘Who will now cut out the cancer destroying Spain?’

So it is great to see the courts finally catching up with the likes of Sanchez and his disgraceful get rich quick scheme... although eight years in prison is not enough. The likes of Transparency International shining a light on town halls around Spain is certainly helping bring about change, albeit slowly.

So it is worrying to say the least, to discover some town halls like Mijas are actually going backwards.

And particularly under the umbrella of the Ciudadanos party, which is supposed to be fighting corruption, not encouraging it.

Have a heart

IT’s truly sad that a loyal customer of a hotel for 13 years is being evicted to make a bit more money.

Considering her advanced age, it is remarkable that Fuengirola Park hotel is even contemplating asking Catherine McDonald to leave the home she has been in for over a decade. The fact that she could have bought a house for the money she has paid is entirely ignored. All this for a couple of extra thousands of euros, before letting her back in throughout the winter - the low season - when Costa del Sol hotels need all the custom they can get.

The Olive Press prays they reconsider their decision.

T’S 11pm, and Magaluf is grinding into action.

On the Strip, scantily clad girls at the City Lights bar gyrate on raised platforms while Irish and British youngsters sink cheap shots and cocktails.

Over the years, this Mallorca resort has become a byword for bad behaviour. Its heady brew of sex, drink and violence is manna from heaven for tabloid-headline writers, with a daily onslaught of stories proclaiming the worst excesses of north European youth.

In truth, most of the youngsters here are wellbehaved kids, many enjoying their first overseas holiday away without the family and exercising their right to cut-price booze. Two Sex On The Beach cocktails here cost as little as €4.50, two pints just €3.

But despite the best intentions of Mallorquins and the local business community, Magaluf is finding it hard to shed its bad-boy-and-girl reputation.

“A few lads we know have got a hiding over here,” said Sean, 19, from County Wateford, who is here for a week with a group of seven friends.

“One lad went out on his own the other night and 15 English lads attacked him. He got battered with a baseball bat and had to have 12 stitches. He went to the hospital, but was back out again the next night.”

a nickname which needs no further explanation. Just last week, two British youngsters were filmed brutally battering a compatriot at an apartment block in Punta Ballena, setting about him in a sustained, sickening assault that was captured on CCTV. One of the culprits can be seen stabbing the victim with a broken bottle before the duo pummel him to a pulp.

The following day, a 19-year-old Brit was left fighting for his life after falling from a third-floor flat, sustaining a broken leg and life-threatening injuries. On Wednesday, an 18-year-old British girl reported an alleged sexual assault to Spanish police as Magaluf’s grim roll call lengthened yet further.

The annual ritual of debauchery has spurred locals into action. In June, as reported in our last issue, an updated list of 64 regulations outlawing bad behaviour were issued by Calvia council, the local authorities charged with upholding law and order.

The list of misdemeanours are split into three categories. ‘Minor’ offences, such as climbing a tree or shining a laser, are charged at between €100 and €599. ‘Serious crimes’, like defecating in the street, will see miscreants charged from €600 to €1,499. Bar owners serving under-age drinkers can be slapped with a penalty of between €1,500 to €3,000.

According to figures supplied by Calvia Town Hall, the first 15 days of June saw 25 complaints filed with the police for outdoor nudity, with one group of 18 drunken tourists fined last month after jumping in the sea totally starkers.

But despite this new clampdown, many are yet to discern a meaningful change.

iour,” said a spokesperson for the head of local business body ACOTUR. “There are important people here that are working hard to change the image of the area.

“Thirty or so years ago, this kind of thing didn’t happen. Tour operators like Thomas Cook had guides who showed people what to do, where to go and what not to do. That doesn’t happen now.

“People here didn’t expect it to be as bad this year as last year. We have to change attitudes, and tell people. ‘You can’t come here and do whatever you want.’”

This week, Mallorca council and government officials sat down with local business and hoteliers to discuss the dilemma of badlybehaved young holidaymakers tarnishing the island’s reputation.

Despite the local outrage, Magaluf’s illicit thrills continue to draw boys and girls looking for a good time, with many young Irish choosing to base themselves in nearby Santa Ponca before heading into Magaluf for a night - or day - out.

While the Brits may attract the lion’s share of the bad headlines, Irish youngsters have found themselves on the wrong side of the local press, too. Last week, local online media outlet Cronica Balear posted a video purportedly showing dozens of Irish youngsters dancing in the street at 6.30 am. MORE than 3,000 people have signed a petition to call off a bullfight.

Four representatives of the Campo de Gibraltar antibullfighting movement handed the petition to La Linea town hall showing the growing opposition to the ‘act of animal cruelty’.

The fight, due to take place at La Linea’s bullring this Saturday has been opposed by locals as well as people from all over Europe.

AN ageing expat - on the run for 20 years - has been picked up in Spain over a string of crimes committed around Europe.

The 73-year-old Italian pensioner, who is accused of armed robbery, murder and sexual assault, was arrested at a campsite, where he was staying in a van owned by his Dutch expat girlfriend.

Carlo Alberto - who evaded capture by staying on the move, often driving 1000 kilometres a day - was picked up on Gran Canaria this week.

GIBRALTAR will throw the ‘party of a generation’ on National Day in celebration of the Rock’s Britishness.

In a clear snub to Spain, the Rock is preparing to host the largest bash in history celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum when residents unanimously voted to stay British.

The September 10 party, nicknamed ‘please refrain, Spain,’ will see the Rock adorned with Union Jack flags and other British memorabilia.

It comes despite its new mayor working for the country’s socalled anti-corruption party Ciudadanos.

The town hall scored a pitiful 45 out of 100 on the index of openness by NGO Transparency International, which uses 80 indicators to analyse municipalities globally.

Alarmingly the town has plummeted from 92.5 points in 2014, the biggest drop in Spain and coinciding with the arrival of mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado, of Ciudadanos.

Ironically, near neighbours Fuengirola scored 94.4 and Marbella 93.1. Sevilla scored 93.8, while Velez Malaga scored

EXPAT campaigners have slammed the ‘cruel’ response of the UK government to their Brexit concerns.

Members of Brexpats in Spain have told British Ambassador Simon Manley that they are extremely concerned at the lack of information being given to them over the UK’s exit from the EU. The group slammed the lack of information emanating from Westminster on citizens’ rights post-Brexit in particular over healthcare and pensions.

“If the government has no information then please say so publicly and some of our unfounded worries might be allayed, especially the pensioners who are already at their wit's end,” the spokesperson said.

“I believe that is that is positively cruel. Most of our members are very angry and feel totally overlooked, we deserve answers.”

During the meeting, Manley said the UK was ‘hopeful’ an agreement would soon be reached on freedom of movement in the EU. He stated ‘an enormous amount of work was being undertaken behind the scenes’ to safeguard British EU-based citizens’ concerns.

A LACK of energy and leadership in Theresa May’s government has left hopes of a successful Brexit at risk of falling apart ‘like a chocolate orange’, a leading UK government watchdog has warned.

Amyas Morse, boss of the National Audit Office, said the government had failed to take a unified approach to talks with the EU. He also revealed that a request to see a ministerial plan for the changes needed to leave the EU had been met with only ‘vague’ assurances.

It comes as chief negotiator David Davis was mocked for turning up at a key Brussels meeting this week with no apparent dossier or papers.

The almost unprecedented intervention by Morse is likely to put pressure on May to reassess her approach to the negotiations.

Morse said that the result could be a series of failures across Whitehall as negotiations unfold. “Can government actually step up in these very difficult circumstances and deliver a unified response?” he asked. “I’m not seeing it yet.”

The report confirmed that the Costa del Sol is the most built up coastal region of Spain, with buildings covering almost 75% of the coastline.

It comes down to a number of reasons, including its seafront location and recently completed A-7 autovia which runs from La Jonquera near Barcelona to Algeciras.

There are already plans to build 680 properties on the coast of Axarquia, and worryingly, there is pressure to build close to the Guadalhorce river, a nature reserve.

Cars toxic for kids TRAFFIC pollution in cities can stall children's brain development and stop them from reaching their full potential, according to a Spanish study that measured air pollution in 300 classrooms.

Researchers involved in the BREATHE project found that the distance to the nearest road significantly influenced the levels of harmful invisible particles in classrooms and ultimately slowed brain growth in children.

The project, funded by the EU's European Research Council, examined 3 000 children in 40 different schools across Barcelona and discovered that those that inhaled more air pollution performed worse on computer tests.

The harmful effects are due to tiny particles released from vehicles, especially diesel engines. The invisible flecks of carbon are so small that once you breathe them in, they can cross from the lung into the bloodstream and then travel to the brain.

"They stimulate immune cells and produce an inflammatory effect at various levels of the brain," explained Professor Jordi Sunyer, lead scientists on the BREATHE project and senior researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, Spain.

“Malaga is extremely saturated; it is a continuous line as far as Cadiz, although so far the eastern area has not been as badly affected until now,” said Greenpeace director Pilar Marcos.

There are 11 areas at risk in Andalucia in addition to Malaga, including Torreguadiaro, southern Motril and Roquetas-Aguadulce.

Speaking out in frustration for the worsening situation, Marcos said: “We cannot allow the model which has led our country to economic ruin to continue.”

Heritage hot The Olive Press rummages through Andalucia’s treasure trove of worldrecognised UNESCO sites to pull out the gems, by Mason Cox

General Archive of the Indies, Sevilla Priceless manuscripts dating from the days of the illustrious Spanish Empire are housed within this elegant Renaissance-style repository which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Sevilla was made incredibly wealthy by the goods being brought through from the New World and the building was originally commissioned by King Philip II of Spain as a merchants’ exchange. As traders moved out of the city, and after transitioning through many hands, the building became an archive in 1785, bringing documents relating to Spain’s vast New World territories, stretching from Mexico to Florida, under one roof. Containing some 80 million pages of history held in 43,000 volumes which occupy nine kilometers of shelving, the archive is a thing of beauty as well as an unrivalled world resource documenting an era dominated by empires.

Alcazar of Sevilla It’s a royal palace so beautiful, the top floor is still used by Spain’s royal family as their official residence in Sevilla. Originally designed as an oasis for Moorish kings, the architectural style is distinctly mudejar with hectares of gardens and courtyards, thousands of square meters of extravagant buildings embellished with fountains and pools, water being a precious status symbol of the time. Used as a backdrop for many films and TV productions, from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones, there is wow factor at every turn, from the ornate Courtyard of the Maidens to the curious Mercury Pond and its Grotto Gallery backdrop.

The Generalife, Granada Another section of the Alhambra citadel famed for its stunning gardens. Although it looks like the name of a life insurance company on paper, Generalife is Arabic for ‘architect’s garden’ and it was built as a summer palace for the Nasrid rulers between 1302 though 1309. During the 19th century the palace fell into ruin but was rescued in the 20th century and the gardens you see today were created during the reconstruction. Despite this, the Generalife is one of the oldest surviving Moorish gardens in the world.

The Albayzin Ubeda & Baeza, Jaen A tale of two cities in the province of Jaen, separated by 10 kilometres but united in one UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both cities benefited from extensive patronage in the early 16th century, resulting in a treasure trove of Renaissance style palaces and churches which have been preserved ever since. Ubeda’s most outstanding feature is monumental Vázquez de Molina Square, surrounded by imposing palaces, while Baeza chips in with a Gothic Renaissance cathedral, a Romanesque church and a Plateresque town hall among its jewels. The two cities are now also linked by one tourist board promoting the attractions of both.

Brimming with places of historic interest - Wikipedia lists 28 - this beautiful medieval Moorish district of Granada could have popped up from the pages of a fairytale book.

Declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, some of its winding streets are so narrow they are impossible to walk down, let alone drive a car through. One of many interesting facts is that the district used to get its water from 28 wells. Over time, the water pipes broke and although never repaired, their preserved remnants are still visible today.

spots The Alhambra, Granada The Muslim palace and fortress of Granada provokes global adoration for its mind-boggling beauty and splendour. According to legend, it moved the last Moorish ruler to tears when he left it. Originally built as a Roman citadel, it was left to disintegrate until the 13th century when it was reconstructed by the first of the Nasrid kings. Paid homage by countless poets, artists and nobles over centuries, its spectacular dimensions are surreal. Within the palace are numerous buildings, such as the Hall of Ambassadors, Courtyard of the Palace and the Court of the Lions (see below, right). It’s treasures are known even to those who have never visited as it shows up in novels, films, stories and numerous works of art.

Gorham’s Cave Complex Although located in Gibraltar, it’s only a hop across the isthmus joining the Rock to Andalucia to visit this very new UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has only held that honour since last year although it predates all the other sites in this article by millennia. The cave is believed to have been the last refuge of Neanderthals in Europe circa 55,000 years ago. Neanderthal remains, scratches in the rock, pottery and other signs of habitation were found in the limestone cave, making it a hotspot for biologists studying evolution as it embodies much of humanity’s distant past.

City of Cordoba An entire city protected by UNESCO has to be something special, and Cordoba, perhaps most famous for its mosque cathedral bridging two religions, never disappoints. The region was conquered by the Romans in 206 BC and remnants of its past glory can be found everywhere, from its city walls, gates and towers to its beautiful Roman bridge. When the Muslims claimed it in the 8th century they too left their mark, constructing libraries, universities and medical schools which elevated Cordoba into a global centre of learning.

While other cities thrived during the Renaissance, Cordoba declined but today it’s back in business as one of the brightest jewels in Spain’s cultural heritage crown.

Granada City Granada, like Cordoba, is so famous it needs little introduction, with the Alhambra Palace and the Royal Chapel among its plethora of heritage gems. Dating back thousands of years, the earliest recording of a population in the region is 5500 BC but it wasn’t until 711 AD, after the Muslim conquest, that the city was established.

Architecturally it has something for everyone, from Renaissance to Baroque but its greatest artistic wealth is its Spanish-Islamic art.

Court of the Lions, Granada

Donana National Park Shared by Huelva, Sevilla and Caidz provinces, this natural wetland covers an area of 543 km2, with protected parkland, marshes and sand dunes. In 1969, the World Wildlife Fund purchased this section to protect its abundant fauna and flora and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1994. Unfortunately, the ecosystem is constantly under threat, its water resources drained by agriculture and polluted by industry. But visitors can still enjoy its many natural wonders, including hundreds of species of birds, mammals and reptiles.

One of the highlights of a visit to Granada’s exquisite Alhambra Palace, this Nasrid Dynasty courtyard lies at the heart of the worldfamous Moorish citadel.

Built between 1362 and 1391, the centrepiece is a circular fountain guarded by a phalanx of lions, symbolising the vital importance of water at that time. A colonnade of ornate archways with marble floors surround the courtyard in a cloister style typical of ancient Persian and Islamic gardens. Although a place for tourists and aficionados of fine architecture, it is also a space for contemplation that inspired the 14th century poet and statesman Ibn Zamrak to write an ode to its beauty, carved into the fountain’s rim.

Demand from abroad has grown for seven years straight, according to international consultant firm JLL. In the first half of this year alone, foreign buyers and funds have more than doubled the investment on the same period last year.

So far external investors have sunk €888 million into buying Spanish property, smashing last year’s record of €330 million.

While Madrid and Barcelona are the leading hotspots and attract the most interest from foreign buyers, Malaga, Sevilla, Mallorca, Bilbao and San Sebastian are also bringing in big numbers.

It comes as it was revealed that Spain is still the most searched for destination for Brits looking to buy abroad.

According to Rightmove, Spain is the most popular destination for Britons looking to relocate or buy a second home.

Average monthly internet searches total over 2.5m, some 74% above its closest rival and second placed France.

Alicante was the most searched region in Spain, increasing by 53% from last year.

At €126,054, however, it also has the lowest average enquiry price of the most popular sunny regions.

According to Rightmove, 62% of Alicante enquiries

are for houses, while 38% are looking for flats or apartments.

With an average enquiry price of €397,813, property in Mallorca is most popular with high budget buyers, with 54% looking for flats and apartments and 46% looking for houses.

Despite properties in Mallorca being three times higher in price than those in Alicante, it still tops the list as the second most searched for property destination in Spain.

Malaga is in third position, with an average enquiry price of €191,830.

In terms of upmarket property he also singled out Mallorca, for its great climate, upmarket living and picturesque surroundings. “Mallorca is perfectly positioned as the ultimate destination for high budget UK buyers looking to purchase their own slice of paradise.”

That said, and as I always point out, national house price figures are not much use when it comes to understanding local markets.

However, they may influence market expectations and confidence, which is why I keep an eye on them.

Meanwhile, Spain’s leading appraisal company Tinsa publishes house price data categorised by area (based on its own valuation).

Looking at the data published by Tinsa for May, we see that house prices in big cities and provincial capitals were up by 6.1%, by 4.7% on the Mediterranean coast, and by 2.9% in

ANS of Love Island can snap up the luxury €3 million Spanish villa where the raunchy reality TV show was first filmed.

AN overwhelming 60% of householders in Spain fear their homes will be broken into when they go away.

However, despite this only one in 10 concerned homeowners have put anti-theft measures in place.

Many Spanish families from cities such as Barcelona leave homes empty for about a month while they head to the coasts, making the properties easy targets for thieves.

Brits who have holiday homes in Spain or expats who travel frequently can also leave their homes empty for months.

Some 41% of homeowners know someone who has been burgled, while 5% say they have already been targeted.

Despite this, the survey by Securitas Direct found that only 11% have a radio alarm.

Just 10% have security cameras installed and only 9% have reinforced doors.

Torremolinos leisure park British property developer Intu is looking to make a big splash with the largest shopping and leisure complex in Andalucia, covering some 200,000 square meters. The giant leisure park will include shops, restaurants, a dry ski slope and large pool with surf waves. The company is still awaiting final approval, but says it intends to begin work early this year, with completion due in 36 months.

Marbs megahotel Marbella’s largest ever luxury hotel, costing €300 million, has begun construction this summer.

It is expected to be open yearround from summer 2019 and is slated to create 1,000 stable jobs.

MALLORCA winery is operating on 100% renewable energy.

The 1,300-metre-square Son Juliana bodega is set just below the spectacular Tramuntana mountain range between Santa Eugenia and Biniali.

Built in just 15 days, the winery is the brainchild of local architects Munarq Arquitectes.

Cork-insulated roofs allow a stable temperature for the wine to be stored, with some 40,000 litres a year currently produced. “They were in a hurry, so because of this we built in a prefab concrete structure, built in 15 days," revealed a spokesperson.

The ventilation and temperature is carried through pipes connected to geothermal heat pumps.

Steady wins the race Andalucia leads the pack in mortgage sales as Spain’s recovery takes firm and steady hold

NDALUCIA is leading the way in the Spanish mortgage stakes.

It comes after the number of home mortgages granted to prospective buyers in Spain dropped by 11.4% in April when compared with the same month in 2016, according to Spain's Statistical Office (INE).

A total of 21,163 home mortgages were granted in the fourth month of this year.

Andalucia registered the most with a total of 4,467, followed by Madrid and Catalonia with 3,732 and 3,345 respectively.

And while the number of mortgages dropped, their values increased.

The average value stood at €112,834, rising by 5.4% when compared to April of last year.

It comes as new data suggests the Spanish property market is avoiding a bubble and continuing to grow healthily, unlike pre-crisis where it was not unusual for (overseas) clients to buy multiple properties over the phone, sight unseen… clearly a recipe for disaster!

According to a recent Moody's report, the ratios of home sales are healthier now than those observed before the 2008 crisis.

Caution is demonstrated by the banks when it comes to granting mortgage loans - now monthly cost must be covered three times by your net monthly salary and only 14% of loans granted reach 80% of the appraisal value (those only being for residents) - and this added to the strong adjustment in prices and the relative low level of transactions.

Meanwhile, mortgage lending as part of GDP has fallen dramatically, suggesting the mortgage bubble is deflating.

The Spanish economy has gone from having outstanding mortgage loans equivalent to 100% of total GDP in 2009, the height of the economic crisis, to just to 59.29% last December.

It makes Spain a safe and steady investment, and means if there was ever a time to invest, it’s probably now.

The costs of selling on the Costa, part 1

Find out about the costs you’ll have to cover before and after you find a buyer

Menorca making waves MENORCA’S property market is booming as the Balearics’ little brother flexes its muscles.

The Mediterranean idyll, listed as a Unesco Biosphere zone in 1993, is famed for its spectacular countryside.

Properties next to the beach or with a sea view have risen in value by 15% year-on-year.

“Menorca reminds people of what the Mediterranean used to be like 40 years ago,” said Francisco Arnau of Engel & Völkers.

“It’s relaxed and peaceful. Everyone knows each other and you can leave your keys in the car – no one cares.”

Interest from French buyers has surged on the island, with one family recently snapping up Menorca’s most expensive property, an €11 million country estate.

As the island’s property market motors on, Sothebys has decided to open an office in Mahon later this year.

“Our contacts tell us that more and more wealthy families are moving to the island – they love the privacy combined with the interesting resident community,” said managing director Alejandra Vanoli. One local property expert, quantity surveyor Colin Guanaria from Menorca’s longest running estate agency, Bonnin Sanso, says prices in Menorca are ‘15-20%’ cheaper than in Mallorca.

A

lthough buyers are liable for the lion's share of the costs that arise from property sales in Spain, vendors do have to pay taxes and a number of other costs, both prior to putting a home on the market and on completion. In this article, we'll look at the costs you cannot avoid, while, in the next one, we'll see what deductions may be applied to mitigate taxes.

The first thing is to get all your bills paid up to date. These include: municipal property tax (IBI); rubbish collection (basura), although, depending on where the property is, this may be included in the IBI; utilities; and, if the property is part of a community, community fees.

You also need an energy efficiency certificate (Certificado de Eficiencia Energética, CEE). This must be issued by a registered technician and rates emissions and energy use on a scale from A to G. If the property is occupied for less than four months a year, you don't need a CEE, but do have to provide a written declaration. The average cost is €1.5/ m2, but can work out cheaper per m2 for larger properties.

You now have everything you need to sell, so you may decide to work with an estate agent rather than go it alone.

Most agents on the Costa del Sol, including Terra Meridiana, charge 5% of

the final sale price, plus 21% VAT. This may be negotiable, but should cover all costs of marketing your property, including listing, viewings, visits, and everything else to help it sell. And make sure you only agree to pay a fee if the property sells.

Once the property does sell, sellers are required to pay their taxes within 30 days after the signature of the public title deed (escritura). These are levied in accordance with the period of time a property has been owned, how much it has gained in value during that time, your fiscal status and residence, and the total amount of income you earn during the taxable period when your property is sold.

The first is municipal capital gains tax (better known as plusvalía), which is paid to your local town council and calculated (based on the cadastral or rateable value) on the increase in the value of the land where the property stands. As a general rule, the longer you own a property, the more you pay.

If you are not resident in Spain, buyers are obliged to retain the tax due on your behalf to avoid becoming liable for payment themselves. Spain's Constitutional Court recently ruled the law regulat-

ing how plusvalía is calculated null and void, stipulating that the tax can only be applied when the seller makes a profit.

Nevertheless, some town councils continue to try to collect the tax, so we recommend you challenge any demand, if that is your case.

The second is income tax (Impuesto sobre la Renta), paid to the Spanish Tax Agency and calculated on the difference between the price you paid (and costs arising from the purchase) and the sale price (less costs). If you're a resident in Spain, you pay income tax at a percentage that varies depending on your total earnings during the fiscal year. If you are not a resident, you pay a fixed rate of 19% of the taxable base if you reside in another European Union state and 24% if you are resident outside the EU. Again, buyers are required to retain 3% of the sale price on your behalf.

Finally, if your property was mortgaged and you plan to pay off the outstanding loan when it is sold, most banks in Spain will charge a small commission.

This usually is less than 1% and may be negotiable.

It wants to slash the financial incentive of making claims against holiday firms, with the scams thought to cost Spanish hotels €100 million a year.

Travel industry bosses and Spanish hotels have complained of a huge rise in such false claims.

Justice Secretary David Lidington said the government wanted to cut the legal costs holiday firms had to pay out in such cases.

"Our message to those who make false holiday sickness claims is clear - your actions are damaging and will not be tolerated," Mr Lidington said.

Tourist and travel group ABTA said it ‘strongly welcomed’ the government’ move.

The government said it would reduce the cash incentives of bringing such cases against holiday firms.

Treating it ZARA founder Amancio Ortega has donated €40 million to provide cancer-battling machines to 11 Andalucian hospitals.

They include 25 linear electron accelerators and two radiotherapy simulators.

The first of the machines was placed in the University Hospital Reina Sofia to treat breast cancer.

Radiation therapy isolates and destroys diseased cells without damaging healthy tissues to prevent the tumor from spreading. It comes after 32,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed in Andalucia each year.

Researchers found that the group with the highest consumption of coffee had a lower risk for all causes of death, compared to those who did not drink coffee. Lifestyle factors such as diet and smoking were taken into account. Men who drank at least two and a half cups a day reduced their risk by 12% and women by 7%. It also reduced the risk of dying from digestive diseases by 51% for men, and 40% for women, and lowered the risk of death from circulatory disease for women by 22%.

HEY are the aroma and flavour of summer on the Costas and a spectacle to see - skewers of shimmering silver fish fresh from the sea, spit-roasted al fresco until golden over olive wood fires laid out in traditional fishing boats.

Espeto sardines form a continuous barbecue chain on beaches along the coast from east of Malaga to west of Cadiz, their familiar salty scent marking the annual transition from spring into summer.

Best enjoyed at a beach bar by the sea shore with the wind in your hair and your toes in the sand, tourists are enchanted by this casual dining tradition.

Spit-roasted sardines are as much of a staple on Andalucia’s gastronomic menu as its famous goats cheeses and home-grown pata negra jamon.

Espeto comes from the verb ‘espetar’, which means ‘to spear’, and refers to the way in which the sardines are cooked on wooden skewers over fire.

The tradition of cooking the fish in this way dates back to the master mariners of Phoenician times.

After a long day working at sea, the famished fishermen would come back to shore in search of fast food. They began building small fires in their boats to grill sardines, the least expensive fish in their catch and a popular food choice among the poor.

It was quite by accident that a Spanish monarch elevated them from a lowly peasant dish to the

Pushing the boat out

Although chiringuitos have become fancier over the decades, the method for preparing and cooking espetos remains largely the same.

Before they are cooked, the sardines are salted and placed in a bucket of ice for at least 30 minutes to make the flesh firmer. Traditionally, only olive oil and salt are used to season the fish but more adventurous chefs like to add herbs, such as rosemary, thyme or bay leaves, for extra flavor.

The dish is constructed by spearing the sardines on a bamboo skewer - six to each spit. Medium-sized fish make the best espetos and they are ordered on the skewer from largest to smallest, with the bigger fish closer to the coals. The espetos are then stuck into sand and cooked over an olive-wood fire.

Most amoragadores, or grillmasters, still cook them in boats on the sand as their fishermen ancestors did. The last step in the process is to enjoy the finished product. Espetos are best served with a crisp salad, bread

HIS July, I've decided that I'm not leaving the house unless I absolutely have to - nor dressing, for that matter, as it's far too hot for anything more than a swimsuit.

And make-up?.. Forget it!

On the few occasions that I've braved the roads and headed out, the traffic has been chaos, parking impossible, drivers demented and the combination of heat, crowds and queues have had me beating a retreat home where I sit on the kitchen floor - in my pants - with the freezer door open and my head pressed firmly against a bag of frozen spinach, vowing never to venture out again.

Each year they say it's getting hotter, but this summer I'm finding the heat increasingly hard to bear. I mention this to a friend, as I lift a cake out of the oven and wipe the sweat from my brow, "It could be hot flashes." She remarks, sipping her coffee, "You might be menopausal, you never know!" I look up in horror. Menopause?!

"How do I know?" I demand, as I stand sweating, wearing a fetching combination of swimwear, a kitchen apron and oven gloves.

Putt more on FEMALE golf players must now adhere to a new dress code.

From now on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LGPA) has stated that players must refrain from wearing miniskirts or shirts with low necklines.

The new rules were sent to all female players via an email from the association’s president Vicki Goetze-Ackerman.

Golfers who do not comply with the new dress code will be fined $1,000 for the first offence, and the amount will double when further ‘breaches’ are made.

WIMBLEDON champion Garbine Muguruza can become the world’s best player, her coach believes.

The Venezuelan-born Spaniard beat five-times champions Venus Williams 7-5 6-0 in last Saturday’s final to record her first All England title.

Last year, the 23-year-old scooped the French Open with trainer Conchita Martinez adamant Muguruza can secure herself as the leading light in women’s tennis.

Football corruption probe leads to the arrest of the president of the Spanish FA

THE boss of Spain’s football federation has been arrested after an in-depth corruption investigation.

Angel Maria Villar, president of Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol (RFEF), has been charged with misappropriation, corruption and misrepresentation.

Villar Llona, who is also a senior vice-president at Fifa and Uefa, was arrested on Tuesday morning along with his son Gorka and three other federation executives.

The Guardia Civil said the football officials were detained while raids were carried out at the federation headquarters in Madrid.

Manilva-based road sweeper Paco Rodriguez Sendra wants to help the area’s British population, who feel threatened by Brexit.

CATALONIA will declare independence from Spain within 48 hours if its voters back secession in October, a draft bill has said.

However, a recent poll put those in favour at just 44.3% with those against at 48.5%.

The referendum promised by Catalan leader Carlos Puigdemont on October 1 will require a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to the offer of independence.

If ‘Yes’ wins, the regional government plans to declare independence within two days.

But if ‘No’ wins, an early election would be called to form a new regional government.

The Constitutional Court and conservative government have repeatedly blocked secessionist challenges.
