2. A Base Ball Game. [Proof with portraits.] Henry Sandham (1842-1910). Copyright 1896

by Boussod Valadon & Co. who were successors of Goupil & Co. Goupilgravure (photogravure), 1896. Image size 38 5/8 x 51 3/4” (98.1 x 131.4 cm). Very good condition. #83345-1 $35,000.00 One of the greatest baseball images produced in the nineteenth century. The location is the second Polo Grounds located between 155-157 Streets and Eighth Avenue, Manhattan.

The game being played is the first “Temple Cup” in 1894, a best of seven series, similar to the “World Series” today. The game was between the New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles, won by New York in four games.

(On cover) This image was produced as an advertisement for the clothing fashion firm of Butterick & Co., the originator of the graded sewing pattern. It is also one of the earliest to show a professional league baseball game being played and likely the first to show baseball uniforms.

Although not noted on the print, the location shown is a field in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This field had two names: during the warmer months it was called Union Grounds and during the winter months Union Pond. The grounds were located between Harrison and Marcy Avenues and Lynch and Rutledge Streets. It opened on May 15, 1862, as the Union Grounds, the first fenced-in baseball park, thereby allowing the owner, William Cammeyer, to charge admission to the games.

The club uniforms depicted are (left to right) Cincinnati Red Stockings, undefeated in 1869; Empire of New York; Atlantic of Brooklyn; Star of Brooklyn; unknown, possibly Hartford Dark Blues (Captain on belt); and Mutual of New York. Also of interest, the Empire player lying down is holding a ball with the name of Peck & Snyder on it. Peck & Snyder was one of the first producers of sports equipment including baseballs.

We are dedicated to our seventy-nine-year-old publication, Portfolio; however, we recognize that its days are numbered. Last year we decreased the number of printed catalogues published a year and began publishing digital catalogues as well. This test was successful; therefore, we will expand our digital catalogues. New York City was the world leader in the oyster trade throughout the nineteenth century. The bays and harbors were full of oysters, reportedly upwards to a foot long.

Trimmed tight on the sides and bottom, clipping some of the engraved borders. Every impression we have seen has some mitigating condition issues. A very rare American imprint of Washington prior to his election as president. Grolier Club Catalogue of Washington Portraits #47 p. 25. #71662-3 $12,500.00 “Plainly early American work, and the only two copies I have seen were found in the interior of Pennsylvania. Both copies have been clipped so that the outside dimension may not be correct.” as quoted from the Grolier Club Catalogue.

There are some minor handling stains and overall soiling on them. We consider these prints very rare. #95501-1 $3,000.00 A wonderful pair of stipple engravings by an anonymous engraver. George Washington is based on Gilbert Stuart’s full length “Lansdowne” portrait painted in 1795. These engravings were likely engraved in America by an artist of some printmaking talents as quality of the stipple work is good. Perspective, however was not one of the artist’s talents. In real life George Washington was 6’ 2”. This portrait makes him look closer to 4’ 5”.

Burden, #12; Suarez, #23. #88166-1 $8,000.00 Munster’s map of New World is one of the most important and influential maps of the sixteenth century. Overall, a striking map. The first state of the map was issued in the 1540 and 1542 editions of Munster’s Geographia. The very scarce second state was issued in 1545. The title was changed to from “Novae Insulae XVII. . . .” to “Novae Insulae XXVI. . . .” and appeared in only one edition.

Original handcoloring. A scarce map. #88478-1 $2,350.00 A fine separately issued and highly detailed large-scale map of the world. One area of historical interest is the separate delineation for the Oregon Country where the dispute over the border was occurring at the time.

24. Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula. Pieter van den Keere (1571-1646). Copper plate engraving, handcolored, 1608 printed c.1630. Issued by Joannes Jansonius, Amsterdam. Image size 15 3/4 x 21 3/16” (40 x 53.9 cm). German text on verso. Overall in good condition. Some repaired splitting along lower centerfold, and a tiny repaired hole just above the Black Sea. Original handcoloring with some minor modern enhancements. Shirley, #264. #80982-1 $16,500.00 A classic example of a world map based on Mercator’s projection. This beautiful carte-a-figures map of the world was issued by Petrus Kaerius and was based on Blaeu’s almost identical map that was issued in 1606. Some of the engraved ornamentations include allegorical representations of the Sun, Moon, and the five known planets.

Very good condition and color. #97012-1 $85,000.00 A spectacular impression – it is in exceptional condition, has never been cleaned, and does not need cleaning. This is an important print by one of the great women artists of the twentieth century.

Blanche Lazzell Blanche Lazzell did not do traditional editions. Each print is unique. Colors and color density change. She rarely printed more than a few impressions of any block.

This print is inscribed on verso 288/3. What that means is she has printed 288 total woodblock prints to the date of this printing and has printed this block 3 times. It is dated on the verso October 31, 1930, which would be the printing date of this impression.
